A setback only paves the way for a comeback.

NOTE FROM THE

publisher

OUR HEART GOES OUT

to the people of our community that have suffered, endured and been severely setback. We want to thank all the essential workers that kept on, keeping on. (Especially those that kept me stocked in wine, and chips and dip for my husband, Tom!) Everything has changed, and it has been so tough for everyone. Keep hanging in there, the warm summer thus far has definitely been a silver lining for us all. Our town is full of visitors who chose to escape here on vacation. Just think, lucky us, we get to live here! Boat sales have skyrocketed. Kayaks, bikes, paddleboards, anything that floats are all sold out. In these crazy times we are still living the northern dream on the water enjoying quality family time this summer. Tom and I were overwhelmed at the out pouring of love from so many businesses and readers reaching out to tell us they missed their BayLife. We missed it too.

So, it’s a big deal that we are back. Along with all of the advertisers inside these pages. It represents our community and helps our economy thrive. Please shop their stores. Without them we can’t bring this magazine to life. A huge thank you to each of our advertisers for supporting us to bring BayLife back to you. It’s our little slice of normal. Inside the pages you can catch up with what your neighbors and friends have been up to. Even what they have learned! We went out of our way to fill it with familiar faces. So we could guarantee a smile on yours. It was fun to reconnect again with so many business owners that were closed. I have to admit I am a hugger, and I miss that personal connection.

— LIFE’S GRAND ADVENTURE —

THE REAL DEAL Complementary passions and a dose of entrepreneurship helped Pam and Dan Marsh build a successful business that serves their customers and suits their spirits.

The Marshes are extremely hardworking and deserve the respect and success they have received. I see the pride in what they are delivering, and, from my first day working with them, I was committed to matching their efforts to excel.

Dan and Pam Marsh are well known as the founders of Red Ginger restaurant. However, their path to establishing a successful restaurant in the area was not an obvious or straightforward one. Dan studied Human Behaviors in college in Colorado before attending the Culinary Institute of America in New York City and then working in the restaurant industry in San Francisco. Pam worked for many years in banking and insurance. When they decided to open Red Ginger together in 2007, they were able to satisfy Dan’s appreciation for the creativity of food and Pam’s passion for running a customer-focused business that could be profitable and sustainable.

They understand the value of great relationships, whether it’s attracting and retaining the best employees, satisfying their customers, or working with their bankers. In fact, Pam once said, ‘You have to be able to trust your banker. It’s your money, it’s your livelihood, and you need a great relationship to ensure growth and sustainable success.’ Pam has also said that ‘switching to West Shore Bank was a no-brainer.’ Whether it’s loans, advice, or treasury management services they need, West Shore Bank is delivering. It’s rewarding to work for a bank that steps up and stands behind its team. Ryan Popa AVP, Commercial Loan Officer ryanp@westshorebank.com

While owning a restaurant is demanding, the Marshes have excelled— and built a strong team that plays an important role in the restaurant’s success. In fact, Red Ginger is closed on Sundays, despite the financial impact, because it was important to the employees—who are so important to Pam and Dan. The Marshes’ adventures go beyond running a business. They enjoy spending time with their families, and at their farm just outside of Traverse. They have always enjoyed traveling, and are now making trips to South Carolina whenever they can to visit their first grandchild. One of the highlights of 2020 will be a son’s wedding, scheduled to take place at the best restaurant in town: Red Ginger.

18

SUMMER 2020 | BAYLIFE MAGAZINE

MEET

Tom Ranville C onnie Deneweth MARKET PRESIDENT, INDEPENDENT BANK

AND

MARKET PRESIDENT EMERITUS, INDEPENDENT BANK

Your community focus is “Be Independent.” What does that mean to you? Tom: “Be Independent” highlights what we want for our customers; the ability to be independent. Ideally, our employees, products, and services can help our customers to be more independent in their daily lives. Connie: “Be Independent” means being capable of thinking or acting for oneself. Our bank is not filled with corporate bureaucracy, it is still a Michigan community bank that supports our customers in their entrepreneurial efforts.

In our small town, people may feel that you are still a large corporate bank. How would you respond? Tom: Independent Bank (IB) is headquartered in Grand Rapids and has been a Michigan-based bank since 1864. Independent Bank acquired Traverse City State Bank because it fit with our culture and our desire to be community focused. We still look to partner with the same type of customers. The main difference is the enhanced product set that we can bring to the table. Connie: I agree with Tom. Please come visit us to discover how convenient it can be to bank with us. Our customers are our partners.

Connie you have scaled back to a part-time role, and our business community is recognizing Tom as a new face at IB. Tell us a little about that? Connie: Tom is very knowledgeable, likeable, and approachable. He is flourishing in this role and has been warmly welcomed by our community. Tom: Fortunately for me and for all of our employees, Connie is still an employee of Independent Bank and is still VERY active. Connie continues to lead the charge with many new lending opportunities and makes time for all existing customers who have questions.

Connie what have you been up to? I reduced my hours at the bank, so I could focus on completing the real estate development that my husband and I started almost 20 years ago, Copper Ridge. I really enjoy helping Independent Bank customers with their business plans. In addition to that, I am still actively involved in our community, serving on 3 corporate Boards. In my spare time, I have been traveling to Milwaukee to watch my boys play college hockey together on the same team... what a treat!

Tom, tell us the short version of your journey to Traverse City? I’ve been in the banking industry for 37 years and as I like to say, “I’m just getting warmed up!” All 37 years have been spent in Western Michigan. While most recently, I led the efforts for business development for a large bank in Grand Rapids, my roots go back to lending with American National Bank in Kalamazoo, which was smaller than Traverse City State Bank. After building a house on Green Lake in Interlochen six years ago, my wife Rose and I have looked for a way to be more involved in TC — so now I am!

Connie, with more time to plan, what’s next on your bucket list? Traveling with my boys, as much as we can before their lives get too busy and don’t allow much flexibility.

Tom, what is one thing already checked off on your bucket list? Visiting the vast majority of our great restaurants, craft breweries, and wineries!

Final words of wisdom that you live by? Tom: Be passionate, honest, and positive about whatever you do. An attitude that includes all three is infectious and you’ll have more fun! Connie: Play every shift like it’s your last!

Raw Talent The testimony “organic and sustainable” means everything to Jennifer Vander Roest. For years she was searching for sustainable, biodegradable raw linens. “I was sick of buying things that were made in a factory. I started to search where to directly buy these goods. It led to small batch buying, at farms and mills, almost like the foodie movement.” It was a happy accident she made into an online business, Freshwater Textiles. All made here in Traverse City. Now with the opening of her brick and mortar store, (in the old Wood + Cloth location at the Warehouse MKRT) she can proudly boast it’s the only one of its kind in the Mid-West. “It’s all about blending science and art together,” says Jen. Inside you’ll find rolls of fresh fine linens, organic and natural fabrics. With finished goods; towels, bedding and merchandise that is pure and simple for everyday living. “It’s just blossomed into something really special,” says Jen. Freshwater Textiles 144 Hall St., Traverse City wwwfreshwatertextiles.com

Retail Therapy In a world of change, this is a delightful one. As you meander inside the lively corridors of The Mercato, you’ll encounter Haven, a charming new “clothing market.” The owner, Erin Simon, also owns the jewelry store, The Silver Fox. “Ever since I’ve owned the store, people were always asking is there a women’s clothing store here? I just felt like it was missing. It’s such a wonderful community here at the villages and I want to help it survive and thrive,” explains Erin. The stars aligned for the perfect spot, just up the hallway. “Fashion is so fun, I’m loving it. Sarah Shotwell is my good friend and she’s the manager. We have been doing this together and it’s just been a super fun collaboration. Who doesn’t love to shop?” The ambiance of the style you’ll find is casual yet elegant. They have great staple pieces for your wardrobe, that you’ll never know how you lived without. Looking for a private escape? Your timing couldn't be better.

Blast Off Red Ginger owners Dan and Pam Marsh picked a red-hot time to get into the bike business! The pandemic caused a recent ‘bike spike’ as sales and demand for bikes has soared. But forget push power, these are e-bikes outfitted with 250-500-watt motors. You can head up to Suttons Bay and back on a single battery charge. No sweat, all fun. Which explains why the store is called Hello, Fun… Dan and Pam are the new dealer for Pedego Electric bikes. The largest brand in the US. Based in Orange County, Calif., the bike brand locates stores only in very affluent areas. “We are advocates for Pedego, I love the company,” says Dan. “We tried them on vacation, had such a blast we bought our own a year later. They are also great for older clients with mobility issues, sports injuries who still want to be outside.” The bikes are flying out of their store already. The first 20 they bought for rentals all sold instead. Hello, Fun offers test rides, and rentals too. Go from a couch potato to a fun seeker, effortlessly!

Town Heroes

DISH

Who knew that purchasing a tiny old building on the corner of Garfield and Front Street would be a really big deal? That’s what Traverse City natives, Dawnette and David Wessell realized after purchasing Bardon’s Wonder Freeze. A magical spot, with frozen in time memories for generations. Including the couple, who have been together for 33 years. “People have called us the town hero,” smiles Dawnette. Years ago, they thought about buying an ice cream place at the corner of 131 and 3 mile. They put in an offer, but it didn’t happen. With that opportunity gone but not forgotten, their longtime realtor, Cindy Anderson, came calling as soon as Bardon’s hit the market. Dawnette laughs as she recalls, “guess what? I told my husband and he said oh my gosh, no way! To keep the legacy going was an easy decision.” The sugar cones aligned and it all came together. On the day we visited the cleaning crew were hard at work. COVID-update: Open and running with social distancing in place. Get your ice cream on! Bardon's Wonder Freeze 1100 E. Front Street, (Corner of Garfield and East Front Street)

Detroit Style Pizza It was a big day for Dan and Kristin Karabacz, and baby girl Jaclyn, on the day we popped by preCOVID 19. Their new business sign for Charles & Reid Detroit Pizza, had just been hoisted. “I’ve wanted a restaurant since I was 17 years old,” Dan tells us. To pursue that dream, the Gaylord native attended culinary school on the east coast, graduated and worked in Atlantic City. There, he realized two things; He didn’t like the hotel part of hospitality, and he missed the snow. Spending the next 10 years in Colorado, he found a passion for pizza working at Lucky Pie Pizza and Tap House, and while out west he also met his wife, Kristin. “I came back to raise a family and I knew I would find the right place at the right time.” He got a hot tip while working at The Little Fleet. An opportunity to continue the Detroit style tradition of Alley’s Pizza that had closed. Transform it to, Charles & Reid Detroit Pizza, and put his own foodie mark on TC. “To keep it going is a win, win,” grins Dan. Since COVID-19 has happened, Dan has been busy. He adapted by keeping TC well fed with 50 decadent deep dish pies baked daily. Open from 11am – 7pm or until he sells out! He’s adding lunch specials and salads too. Familiar Faces A beloved visit to Amical always includes a warm greeting with Jeff Libman’s glowing smile, and your favorite dish masterfully prepared by Executive Chef Ben Hoxie. So, you’ll be thrilled to know they are both new Amical co-owners. “When I moved here from Illinois I never thought I’d have a job for 13 years,” laughs Jeff. Ben started in 2004, with a little break to head out west. “It’s so great that we get to venture into this together, we get along so well,” says Ben. With their years of experience and trust, ownership had been discussed. “I knew this would be on the backburner now,” laughs Ben. Nope! Owner Dave Denison said it’s the perfect time. “Normally we are so busy. We could never train the other staff to take over our duties. But all “this” happened, and it became a blessing in disguise,” says Jeff. They are most excited to do a few things. “Instead of having to ask, now we are the guys you ask,” laughs Jeff. “The structure will still be there, this is evolution,” says Ben. Amical 229 E. Dallas Dziedzic, Heather Dziedzic, Adrienne Brunette, and John Larson inside the new The Flying Noodle

Flying on Front St. The success of Mama Lu’s Taco Shop on Front Street was born from a simple idea. Co-Owner Adrienne Brunette tells us, “John (Larson) and I moved here from Chicago, but we have lived all over. So, we know food choices in big cities. We just wanted to get a street taco. So, we based opening a place on what the community needs, and what we missed the most.” Now, 4 years later, they are betting on the same concept. This time they are taking on the pasta niche, and bringing extra help with childhood bestie Heather Dziedzic and husband Dallas, as partners. “We are family entrepreneurs with young kids, and we eat out more than the average joe. So, a casual place where we can come as-is makes more sense. I can’t take my 3-year-old to a special occasion restaurant,” laughs Adrienne. Cue, The Flying Noodle, their new Italian pasta house. Renovations were underway all through the shutdown to bring it to life. The doors are finally open. Adapting with the times, their entire menu is available for carry out. They will also offer patio al fresco dining too. Serving all of your Italian favorites, house-made The Flying Noodle fresh and bursting with flavor. 136 E. Front Street, Traverse City

Kind of a Big Dill Are you a pickle person? Asks Brian Shaughnessy owner of The Traverse City Pickle Company. He is originally from New York but transplanted to Michigan to be close to family. Last year upon retirement he found himself in a pickle, he was bored to death after only 2 weeks. Being a New Yorker, Brian also knew deli- style pickles. For years he had been perfecting his recipe for creating the perfect brine pickle, no cooking, no boiling, no vinegar — just a New York deli-style pickle! He hatched a plan. He built a commercial kitchen on his property. “I started out at the farmers market, I was selling 100 jars and it really took off. Now we are selling cases in Toms, Burritt’s, Hansen’s, and both Oryana’s. Folgarelli’s Market wraps a pickle with every legendary deli sandwich they sell. “They go through barrels of our pickles,” says Brian. wicked GOOD EATS

Bay Bread Company

When Stacey and Steve Wilcox moved here from Colorado in 2003, they had to buy themselves jobs! They decided on a bakery on the corner of Randolph and Maple Street that was for sale and had been around since 1998. But the French baguette approach wasn’t making it. With their business savvy minds and hardwork they transformed it into a beloved mom and pop brand, small business, and Bay Bread Company was born!

Bread +beyond

The yummy Bay Bread Grinder

“We make everything from scratch, including butter and olive oil. We chop all the cheese, shred all the vegetables and roast the nuts. A lot of local restaurants serve our bread,” says Stacey proudly. But why go to a restaurant when you can have breakfast and lunch in the same location as Bay Bread Company? Head upstairs to The Roost Café, it’s a casual and comfy spot — extra bonus! You’ll find an amazing view of the bay to savor a plethora of breakfast choices. “It’s hard to screw up, we have great bacon, and great cheese,” laughs Stacey. For lunch the decisions are endless. Navigate your way through scrumptious salads, and grilled or toasted mouthwatering sandwiches — the Hot Italian, or Smoked Gouda Grill. Yum! “All of our crew work and eat here every day, so they like to shake up the menu. Their new go-to is the Greek salad on a sandwich., but the prized staple is the Bay Bread Grinder, comprised of turkey, ham, roasted peppers, asiago cheese on focaccia or ciabatta bread, with our home-made made pesto, that’s the real secret,” says Stacey. Bay Bread Company is the epitome of small and local, on a little street corner.

“We keep it simple, we want to fill you up and make you feel good. That’s why people go out to eat!” — Stacey Wilcox

The age-old tradition to “Break Bread” literally means that a loaf of bread would be broken to share and eat, and engage in a comfortable, friendly interaction. About 16 years and still thriving, I think they are onto something! See you at The Roost Café. Bay Bread Company 601 Randolph St., 231-922-8022 www.baybreadco.com

HOME GROWN & LOCAL Traverse City Whiskey Co.

HOME GROWN & Local with Traverse City Whiskey Co. 201 E 14th St. Traverse City, MI 49684 www.tcwhiskey.com

What are the humble beginnings of the Traverse City Whiskey Co. success story? “I was working downstate unhappy with the corporate world day in and day out. Two friends I met at Michigan State University felt the same way. Our hobby was loving bourbon. The idea of getting into the bourbon distillery business sounded cool as my dad and I had found the patents to my great grandfather's distilling recipes from the 1920s. We sold our first bottle at the Dockside Party Store on West Bay. Eventually we were able to quit our jobs. In 2013, we bought the building for the distillery. Every year we add more barrels, which take up a lot of room. We keep outgrowing the storage buildings.” Which bottle is the most popular? “The Cherry is the best seller. It’s in the top 15 selling spirits in the state of Michigan. That is a big deal as it’s a giant category of spirits. It is kind of our poster child for putting Traverse City Whiskey and Traverse City on the map. It’s a bridge drink for those who want to explore whiskey but may be a little intimidated by it.” You have made Traverse City pretty famous for whiskey? “Yes, we’re currently distributed in 26 states and a few countries outside the United States.” For the perfect Old Fashioned you need cocktail cherries. Yours are becoming more famous than the whiskey! “It’s so funny how this has happened. My dad is a third generation cherry farmer. For the best cherries at the time we were importing expensive cherries from Italy. Which was crazy. We finally partnered with a local fruit Co-op. You can buy them at Costco, Meijer, even Amazon.” The Traverse City Whiskey Co. building is so unique, tell us a little about it. “The building is over 100 years old. It was the original substation for the Traverse City Light & Power Company. We purchased it in 2013 to be our stillhouse, tasting room and cocktail bar. It’s open seven days a week with happy hour 3-7pm Monday-Thursday. Distillery tours are also available.” What’s the next big thing for your brand? “Expansion. We are in the process of building the largest family-owned distillery north of Kentucky. We purchased the old Cherry Growers Inc. facility in Leelanau County 2 years ago. It’s 31,000 square feet and sits on 35 acres of land. Inside we will be able to handle everything from distilling to aging, and bottling. It’s a work in progress.”

“It’s about family history, good friends and passion for quality bourbon that COVID-19 UPDATE Stepping up to help during led to an idea and wethe pandemic, the Traverse City Whiskey are thrilled with how our Company suspended its normal operations to produce hand sanitizer. brand has been received.” It is sold in sizes in sizes 6oz, 12oz, 1

Child's Play We all know our kids didn’t come with directions. We wish they did. According to Occupational Therapist Stacey Beyer, many answers are hiding simply in their behavior. To help you read the signs of ADHD, Autism, Developmental Delay and more, Stacey just opened her brand-new kid friendly center, Therapy Connections. “Movement is communication, they are telling us what they need,” explains Stacey. “I give parents a huge bag of tricks. They only see me once a week, so essentially I need to make the parent a therapist.” Her center is a fun, lively and safe inside playground, that kids look forward to visiting. “I didn’t mean to start a business, but I have spent years at other centers. I now want to make a real difference in parents lives opening my own.” Stacey’s experience holds the magic keys to unlock the power to better understanding your child. Driving down Park Drive you can’t miss the epic ‘The Gym’ sign. It blankets the entire side of the 12,600 sq. foot building. Demanding your attention, the sign boldly signals big changes and a new owner, Ryan Heary. “I’ve been here for 10 years, I kind of stuck around until the time was right,” he laughs. The shut-down was a silver lining for Ryan. “I bought it in January, but

couldn’t change anything except the name, it’s been so gratifying.” With the gym closed he had time to overhaul and update the interior. “I would never have that time. I did a lot of the work myself, I’m like a professional contractor now!” Inside looks dramatically different from the old days. It’s sleek, industrial and modern. He

removed all but two racquetball courts, transforming the space into a massive boot camp center. “We have a trainer with only 15 people in the class, it’s 30 minutes and they are done!” With a cardio room, weight room and a gym just for classes that are all included in your membership, Ryan has everything you need to get your sexy back! Including a massage therapist.

Summer Camp SUMMER CAMP is a rite of passage for our kids. But in the early days of

quarantine a normal summer was looking bleak at best. It was still months away, but everything and anything organized, was being cancelled by the day. Fact: COVID 19 is an official fun-sucker!

For the non-profit group TACS (Traverse Area Community Sailing) that meant the 26 years of mixing kids with water and learning to sail on the Boardman River at Hull Park wasn’t happening this year! Nope. No way, no how.

“WHEN PUSH comes to shove, you shove,” says camp

director Ben Ferris. His passion for teaching our kids to sail has spanned over the last 20 summers. In 2004, Ben received the Best Director of a Seasonal Community Sailing Program from US Sailing, the national sailing organization. “Not doing it wasn’t an option. We are outside, in boats, there is no way we can’t do this!” Tenacious and determined to make it happen, he reached out to sail directors all across the country. “I wanted to see what other people were doing, all the private ones just closed, but the non-profits were still hopeful,” says Ben. He got daily updates from US Sailing with safe practice procedures. He also was pinnacle sharing the information he learned with the TACS board members.

TACS Director Ben Ferris

Now meeting on zoom, he was front and center with must have lists of additional equipment needed. Strategies, requirements and policies that they could adapt for instructors, kid participants and parents. Operation TACS Summer Camp was in play! These vital measures were all possible to move forward. “We looked at our target audience. As long as the parents bought into our methodology to be safe we knew we could do it.” To solve sanitation and cleanliness issues they installed portable handwashing stations. They had 2 porta pottie bathrooms delivered by the boathouse, because the pavilion restroom doubles as a public restroom. This was safer for the kids. Class sizes were reduced, and their entire online registration got a major overhaul. “Parents chose the boat and let us know if their kids are a newbie or returning. The morning of camps I get a registration print out and all the kids are designated their boats,” Says Ben “We will keep that part forever, we should have done this 10 years ago, but it was a lot of work.

DROP OFF and pick up are only done in a parent car line. Masks

worn by instructors and campers. Their temperature is taken every day. Only on the first day, kids are asked specific COVID health questions. Then just the daily question “are there any health changes?”

The kids were put into five specific groups, designated to their numbered cone with a coach/instructor for each. They are most strict about masks and social distancing when they are in the classroom session. An X marks the spot of where to stay. “Camp is way more efficient. We got full, and it's busy but we are more spread out. Everything is so much more compartmentalized. Better teaching and better learning. We also have almost nothing in lost and found, because the kids are always with the instructors at pick up,” laughs Ben. The kids are allowed to unmask only when they are alone on the water, which makes it a heartwarming sight. Normal camper kids, in a normal summer setting, having amazing summer fun, making endless memories. Who ever thought the boring word “normal” would be so revered.

Sanitizing of boats and equipment after each use.

Ben's tenacity to not give in, saved TACS Summer Camp for these kids. And saved parents' sanity for a few short hours for a two week muchneeded break. Learning to sail is a gift you give your kids that lasts forever. In the summer of 2020 it’s also a little slice of normal.

Lake LIVING Both outside and in

Written by Brittany Darga | Speckman Photography

GLEN LAKE

is known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and its breathtaking landscape. From the start, this home was designed to capture Glen Lake’s beauty. “Our home is very open,” the homeowner said. “It’s designed to bring the feel of the lake inside.” Having raced Sailboats since he was 4 years old, the homeowner has always felt a calling to the water. Living primarily in Chicago, he has sailed to the Traverse City and Leelanau County area for years, and knew a home on Glen Lake would be a dream. The homeowner drew up rough plans of the home himself and then took them to Mapleridge Construction in Williamsburg to make his dream become reality.

The outside of the house looks similar to houses in New England, with lots of stone work and light gray shingles. All of which are maintenance free. Walk into the home, look straight ahead, and Glen Lake is the first sight to see. Large doors open up like accordions to bring even more of the lake in. “You can basically have an entire wall of doors open in the summer,” the homeowner said. “It brings the lake even closer than it already is.” It becomes apparent quickly that sailing is a theme throughout the home. In the entryway, guests will see a round compass shaped rug. Look to the right and see a beautiful painting of a sailboat hung over a tall, narrow custom wooded end table. A large sailboat is even at the center in between the living room and dining area.

A FEW STEPS

into the entryway and onto the hickory wood floors, and it is hard not to be drawn immediately to the kitchen. White quartz countertops cover the 10-footlong island, large enough to seat eight guests. A dual-bay mini beverage refrigerator and dual-bay dishwasher are on the sides of the island. “We wanted a big, open island for entertaining, the homeowner said. The ceilings in the kitchen are shiplap, painted sky blue in recognition of the lake and sailing. Custom cabinets designed by Angela Goodall at Kitchen Choreography line the island, as well as the counter behind it. Kitchen Choreography also provided the bronze hood above the Viking range and helped tie in colors and themes throughout the home. A doubledoor refrigerator with see-through doors is on one end of the kitchen, and a dinette is on the other.

STEP TO ONE SIDE

of the kitchen and go to a walkthrough pantry that opens to the laundry room. It is here you can find the master control to the smart home system. Various mechanics in the home can be controlled from a smart phone, including lighting, security cameras, heating, and shades. On the other side of the dinette is a three seasons room, complete with a gas fireplace, television and sitting area. This room doesn’t have a door as the homeowners wanted everything to be open downstairs. A sign that reads “Relax, you’re at the lake” hangs above the fireplace. “We built this house for us and our guests,” the homeowners said. “We want people to feel comfortable and cozy here.” Cozy and welcoming are the main reasons the ceilings are low. Dark stained pine beams can be seen in the ceilings throughout the downstairs, but are perhaps most prominent in the living room. At the forefront in the living room is a massive stone fireplace, with a 75inch television above the mantel and built-in shelves on either side. Off of the living room is another sitting area, complete with a fireplace for cozy reading, and also a den with a custom-built hutch, big enough for two computer monitors. The hutch was built by Bay Area Contracting. Each of these areas has a pocket door for optional privacy.

DOWN THE HALL

from the living room are vast wooden doors that slide open like barn doors to the master bathroom, where a gray double vanity can be found, as well as intricate tile work along the floor and in the large glass door shower. The bathroom has white granite countertops that match the kitchen and a free-standing tub. Further down the hallway is the master suite with an amazing lake view. The large suite has a navy-blue shiplap ceiling and beige shiplap walls, made to have a beach look. Hung on the wall is a large painting of the beach, so the view surrounds the room.

We have the retail therapy you need!

Wooded steps lead guests upstairs to a loft area, as well as three bedrooms, each with their own en suite bathroom. Two bedrooms are for the homeowner’s kids, and then there’s one guest bedroom. In each closet is custom-built shelving, and each bathroom has the same granite countertops as the kitchen, as well as white tile with slightly different feature tile, made possible by Kitchen Choreography.

ONE OF THE BEST THINGS

about being upstairs is the balcony overlooking Glen Lake as well as the impressive patio, where there is a wood burning fireplace with a stone chimney as tall as the house, and a builtin grill, mini fridge and countertops. “We spend so much time out here in the summer,” the homeowner said. Follow a grassy lawn down to the lake where there is a built-in patio and fire pit. Being on Little Glen Lake, the homeowner said it’s quiet in the summer with minimal boat traffic. Part of the upstairs has a closed-off “apartment” that guests

can use. It is comprised of a small kitchen, living area with a murphy bed, and one bedroom and bathroom. The area even has a separate entryway so guests can let themselves in without having to go through other parts of the home. Underneath the stairway in this entryway is a built-in spacious kennel for the homeowner’s two large dogs, Bella and Bailey. The area is gated off with the same spindles used for the main staircase, all of which were customized by Mapleridge Construction. All in all, this home took three years to plan and complete. The homeowners are proud of the open layout and plenty space for visiting family and friends. “We ultimately built this home with guests in mind,” the couple said. “We were very fortunate to find this property and love the way our home turned out.

More than Just A Profession

NORTHERN

HERO

‘Northern Hero’ focuses on highlighting inspiring individuals in our community. We seek to find people who give back to the community in selfless ways. Jay Morse is a Lieutenant with the Glen Lake Fire Department. He has been serving his community as a firefighter for twenty-six years total, and the past twelve with the Glen Lake Fire Department. For the past 9 years, he’s been dually trained as both firefighter and paramedic. Lt. Morse is passionate about public service for two distinct reasons. First, his family has resided in the Benzie/Leelanau area for over a hundred years, and he feels a strong responsibility to care for the people in his community. Second, he’s called to the firefighting profession as a way of continuing his father’s legacy, who served as a volunteer firefighter for fifty-eight years. “I was a firehouse brat”, said Jay lightheartedly. He recalled a story where, as a young boy, he would ride his bike to the station faster than his father could drive. His father and the rest of the firefighters would arrive to the station for an emergency call, and Jay would already have the garage doors open for the firetruck. The Glen Lake Fire Department oversees Empire and Glen Arbor townships, which include the Sleeping Bear Dunes and Pierce Stocking drive. On an average week, Jay will experience two separate 24 hour shifts at a minimum. The types of emergency calls that his team receive vary in both frequency and risk, and range anywhere from elderly assistance, to cardiac arrest, or burning buildings. Lt. Morse holds himself accountable for educating both young emergency professionals and community members alike. Jay believes professionals entering the industry need to fully grasp concepts like compassion and empathy, as these are unwritten prerequisites for the job. He also encourages all community members to learn a life-saving skill. The public can find classes on CPR at the Glen Lake Fire Department held monthly. Other avenues for emergency medical education can be found through local fire departments, the American Red Cross and American Heart Association. When asked about the most satisfying part of his job, Lt. Morse didn’t think twice. “My job allows me to affect a person in a positive way on what could very likely be their worst day.” Andrew Dzierwa was born and raised in Traverse City and is passionate about promoting the people and culture within his hometown. Andrew works full-time at Hagerty, and enjoys fishing and playing the piano in his free time. To nominate an individual for this column email: editor@baylifenorth.com

NORTHERN ENCOUNTERS

CAPTURED BY TODD AND BRAD REED PHOTOGRAPHY

Bass Lake Outlet Rays by Todd Reed

My wife and I watched from a high dune vantage point. We waited, for over 2 hours, for the sunlight to come into line with the water that was winding its way to Lake Michigan from the Bass Lake Outlet. I liked the resulting picture but looked forward to photographing that S-curve with a sky filled with storm clouds. I returned on such a day only to find winds and waves had swept away the S-curve and left a straighter stream behind. www.toddandbradreed.com
