Baylor Changed My Life

It’s hard to imagine one person being more connected to and involved with Baylor School than Billy Aiken ’68.

After distinguishing himself at Baylor as class salutatorian, a Morehead-Cain Scholar, and All-City athlete in two sports, Billy has served on the Board of Trustees, was president of the Alumni Board, co-chaired a capital campaign, and was a Baylor parent of two sons – Will ’99 (also a Morehead-Cain Scholar) and Ben ’00. While all those and many more connections have been meaningful, most important to Billy was that he was able to attend Baylor at all. further education that would otherwise be impossible. It is not an understatement to say Baylor changed my life.”

“My father met a couple of Baylor coaches and teachers and realized that attending Baylor could provide me with some unique opportunities and challenges. I was reluctant to go to Baylor, but it turned out that Dad was right,” remembers Billy. “Baylor made me take on challenges and risks academically, athletically, and in other areas, while providing opportunities for Billy’s generosity has been inspiring to many and has not gone unnoticed by his sons. Speaking for Will, Ben says, “In watching the meaningful long-term connection our father has had with Baylor and reflecting on all that our experience at Baylor has provided for us, we are driven to follow in his footsteps to continue supporting the school.”

Billy says he continues to give, even 50 years after he’s graduated, to help provide current and future Baylor students with the same opportunities and challenges he had. “I keep giving because Baylor continues to take a leading role in teaching students that with the privileges of attending Baylor come significant responsibilities to make the larger community better for others. I am not sure there is any way I can give back to Baylor what it gave to me.”
