A Message from the Head of School Dear Bayside Family: Another year has come and gone on this beautiful campus, and our students continue to excel in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in the community. Many of you know that a key focus for Bayside during the 2018–2019 school year has been digital citizenship. Digital citizenship is a community-wide approach to developing soft skills and emotional intelligence to safely and productively use technology in daily life. I hope you take specific note that this applies to all people within the Bayside community— parents, faculty, and staff—not just students. We are all in this together. (See story on pages 10-13.) Bayside’s volleyball team continues its unprecedented streak, winning its 17th consecutive state championship and becoming the first team in ASHAA history to win titles in four divisions (1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A). As we work to fulfill our mission of educating the whole child and developing lifelong learners who are actively engaged in their community, we encourage our students to become involved in the world outside of Bayside. The BAnd Together hurricane relief efforts for our friends in Port St. Joe, Florida, and the entirely student-led Be Bold, Go Gold campaign are prime examples of the positive contributions our students are making to the community at large. (See story on page 14.) This issue would not be complete without paying tribute to Mr. Gordon Sirmon who passed away in December. As the father of five Bayside graduates and grandfather of 10 alumni, he has been a fixture at Bayside since the very beginning and will be greatly missed. (See story on page 20.) It is my privilege to serve as Head of School at Bayside, where southern roots have global reach. It is great to be an Admiral!

ARTS Because creative development is an integral part of a complete academic experience, Bayside students have seemingly boundless opportunities for involvement in the arts. Beginning with art instruction twice weekly for our younger students moving to AP Studio classes for our oldest students, there are art classes for everyone. Opportunities for dance, strings, and vocal instruction begin in lower School and graduate to full-scale dramatic productions and the Admiral Band in the Upper School.

During the fall semester, over 45 students won awards in local art competitions and exhibitions including Best of Show awards in the Jubilee Festival’s High School Art Competition, the Shrimp Festival Art Competition, and the Weeks Bay Photography Contest. The Theater Department’s fall production of "Disney’s Beauty and the Beast" in November was a smashing success. Thespians and crew members from grades 5–12 put on an amazing show in the Pilot Center Theatre. We look forward to seeing our students in The spring production of "the Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood. "
DIGITAL Citizenship
EDUCATION IN A DIGITAL WORLD by Dr. Meagan McCall
BAYSIDE ACADEMY RECOGNIZES THE VALUE OF DIGITAL MEDIA AS A TOOL TO CREATE, EXPLORE, AND CONNECT AS RESPONSIBLE DIGITAL CITIZENS AND LEARNERS. WE ARE COMMITTED TO A COMMUNITYWIDE APPROACH IN MAINTAINING SAFE AND RESPONSIBLE DIGITAL PRACTICES BY EQUIPPING OUR COMMUNITY WITH THE NECESSARY SKILLS TO WORK & LEARN WITH INTEGRITY WHILE SAFELY NAVIGATING CHALLENGES WITHIN THE DIGITAL WORLD. OFF THE BLUFF 10
We are living in very interesting times with technology and have the ability to exist in two worlds—the physical world and the digital world. Oftentimes, our participation in the digital world does not have a roadmap and has been likened to us being the “pioneers of this world(Guerry, 2018). Bayside Academy strives to produce lifelong learners based on core values of excellence, responsibility, integrity, leadership, community, and respect. These core values are essential characteristics of our students in the physical world and the digital world. This is the reason that a focus on digital citizenship began as a schoolwide mission this year. A team of teachers, counselors, and administrators came together in the summer to formalize our digital citizenship initiative to encompass all Bayside stakeholders, including students, parents, the community, and faculty/staff. Part one of our digital citizenship initiative involves helping support all teachers to become certified as digital instructors through Common Sense Education and getting Bayside Academy certified as a Common Sense School. Common Sense is a leading non-profit organization that provides research and reviews of media to help guide families, schools, and communities of age-appropriateness material for children. Their goal is to help children be responsible navigators of the digital world. Common Sense Education has worked with over 100,000 schools and 300,000 educators to provide free, researchbased classroom materials on digital citizenship (Common Sense Media, 2016). Becoming a Common Sense certified school is a whole-community approach to helping students be responsible digital learners. In order to become a Common Sense certified school, teachers are required to engage in professional learning activities and teach digital citizenship lessons to the students. The lessons are organized by grade bands and include the following eight topics: digital footprint, self-image and identity, relationships and communication, cyberbullying and digital drama, information literacy, internet safety, privacy and security, and creative credit and copyright. Not only have students had lessons provided from each teacher in all subjects, but classes for digital citizenship are included in 5th, 7th, and 8th grades.

He proposed the thought that the very idea of “privacy” is the exact opposite of “social.” Therefore, thinking that your information

Mr. Guerry’s presentation directly supported Bayside’s core values and helped to guide students in making ethical and positive choices not only in the physical world but also the digital world. The third part of the plan to engage the families of Bayside to meet the requirements by Common Sense School certification is to collect data from families, students, and faculty/staff about their viewpoints on educational topics pertaining to digital learning. All stakeholders had the opportunity to complete a survey earlier this year allowing the digital citizenship team to evaluate the digital learning process and the tools that are used in our school and compare with others across the nation. The survey’s entitled “Speak Up Research Project for Digital Learning” and is part of the Project Tomorrow research initiative. According to the Speak Up website, over 35,000 schools and 5 million participants have contributed to the 15 years of data collection by this organization. The goal of the survey is to best serve our students and families for technology and use in school based on hard data. Data results will be available later this month.

COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY
BAYSIDE GIVES BACK In September, Bayside students raised $8,000.00 during a one-week student-led Be Bold, Go Gold campaign to raise awareness for childhood cancer. Seniors Annie O’Neill and Riley McGlasson started the initiative to benefit Caroline Berry, a Spanish Fort High School junior who fought rhabdomyosarcoma for two years. Students were able to present Caroline with a check for her Berry Strong foundation on October 9. Sadly, Caroline passed away on Thanksgiving Day, but we are sure her amazing legacy will continue.
From civic engagement classes for Upper School students to school-wide drives, students learn the importance of helping in our community. Catholic Social Services, Prodisee Pantry, Ronald McDonald House, The Haven, and Waterfront Rescue Mission are just a few of the organizations our students have supported this year.
In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Michael in October, the Bayside community sent a tractor-trailer loaded with recovery supplies to Port St. Joe, Florida, a community with strong ties to Bayside academy. ALUMNI LEADERS
Bayside Academy has the unique privilege of counting SGA presidents from both Auburn University and The University of Alabama among its alumni ranks.
JACOB WATKINS '06 AND JIMMY TAYLOR '10 TAKE LEADERSHIP SKILLS TO THE NEXT LEVEL by Brooks chew
Jacob Watkins '06
When Jacob Watkins made the decision to go to Auburn, he didn’t realize that it would impact him for the rest of his life. The relationships he developed and the network he created during his four years at Auburn provided him with opportunities he never realized even existed. During his years here at Bayside, Jacob was an involved student from SGA to athletics. Bayside challenged Jacob academically and personally and gave him the opportunity to create friendships and relationships that have continued to this day. As Jacob says, “My time at Bayside was an extremely important part of my life. I sincerely appreciate all the experiences, friendships, faculty, and staff that shaped my life today. Bayside is unlike any other high school in the area. Bayside offers a community and support system that cannot be replicated. The school challenges its students while giving them the resources to succeed. Bayside continues to innovate while honoring traditions. I am proud to be a Bayside alumnus.” As a result of his wonderful experience with Bayside’s SGA giving back to the school and the community, he knew he wanted to immediately get involved in similar organizations when he arrived in Auburn. After multiple years serving in a number of different positions within SGA, Jacob decided the best opportunity he had to make a major difference for the student experience at Auburn was to run for SGA president, a position which would allow him to implement programs and changes to enhance the student experience and let him to give back to an institution and community that supported him and affected his life so greatly. As the 2009–10 Auburn SGA president, he was able to make a major difference with programs on campus and to affect many lives through scholarship programs and philanthropic efforts. His proudest accomplishment was building a team of diverse and talented individuals that developed and garnered funding for a night transportation system to make it safer for students to get around downtown; designed the Auburn University Student Recreation Center that continues to rank as one of the top student recreation centers in the country; were integral in creating an enhanced dining program for all students; and grew their philanthropic event, The Big Event, to the largest it had ever been. OFF THE BLUFF 18
Bayside’s core value of leadership obviously resonates throughout Jacob’s life. Bayside provided additional opportunities to sharpen his leadership skills before college. He strived to be a leader in high school and throughout his time at Auburn. Today, he continues to lead as the owner and managing partner of 30A Realty in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. As a son, brother, friend, fraternity brother, SGA president, and business owner, leadership has been crucial to his success. He strives to not only lead others around him but also surround himself with other leaders. In doing so, he has built long-lasting relationships and a strong network he can lean on both personally and professionally.
Jimmy Taylor '10
Jimmy Taylor has always been passionate about the University of Alabama, and when he arrived on campus as a student, he knew he wanted to find a way to have a positive impact on the university during the short time he was there. The SGA at Alabama undertakes several large-scale initiatives each year that impact a large number of students and community members, but the most rewarding part of Jimmy’s role as 2013–14 SGA president was expanding and awarding need-based scholarships. He was able to hear from and provide assistance to students who were facing extraordinarily difficult circumstances and, in many cases, may not have been able to continue their studies without the assistance. Being able to have a significant impact on a single person’s life is such an unbelievable experience and doesn’t require any title or organization.
(Bayside] Challenges its students while giving them the resources to succeed. Bayside continues to innovate while honoring traditions.
Jimmy credits his time at Bayside for preparing him for the role of SGA president at a major university. As he says, part of what makes Bayside so amazing is its ability to “consistently produce students that are well-prepared for the academic rigors of a college course load while not only maintaining but actively encouraging the creativity, passion, and free-thinking that makes a whole person. This is something that does not exist in many places. Current students should try to take a minute every day to realize how lucky they are to be getting an amazing education in one of the most beautiful places on the planet.” While at Bayside, Jimmy received the Socratic Award from Mrs. Peggy Dyson. He says, “No teacher, professor, coach, or boss has had a larger impact on the person I am today.” The strive for excellence that was exhibited by classmates, expected by teachers, and demanded from coaches led to Jimmy’s ambition to become SGA president and has continued to shape his post-graduate career. Today, Jimmy lives in Dallas and serves as an analyst for the originations team of specialty finance start-up Preston Hollow Capital, which invests in tax-exempt income streams through innovative structures and has grown to over $1.75 billion in assets. He currently works as an associate focused on business development and transaction structuring. OFF THE BLUFF 19

f you’ve spent any time at all at bayside, then the sirmon name is most likely a familiar one. When family patriarch gordon sirmon passed away december 3rd at 90 years old, the entire community felt his loss. He held the longest membership at daphne united methodist church and had been a farmer for 78 years. JAMES SIRMON, JOEL SIRMON, CHARLOTTE SIRMON NORRIS, VIVIAN SIRMON TARWATER, GORDON SIRMON, BRENDA SIRMON ALLEN, AND SHIRLEY SIRMON
THE SIRMON FAMILY IN FRONT OF THE BAYSIDE WHITE HOUSE CIRCA 2000.
Mr. Sirmon and his wife, shirley, have been fixtures at bayside since the beginning. When the school began in the fall of 1970, gordon and shirley enrolled their five children in grades spanning the spectrum: 1st grade (brenda ’82), 3rd grade (charlotte ’80), 4th grade (james ’79), 7th grade (vivian ’76), and 8th grade (joel ’75). Joel was in the first class to graduate, and brenda was in the first class to attend from grades 1–12. After watching all five of their children and a daughter-in-law graduate from bayside, they saw 10 of their 12 grandchildren graduate from bayside. Collectively, the sirmon family has around 168 years invested in bayside. You may wonder how a baldwin county farmer who was unable to attend college himself managed to instill the importance of education in his family. Gordon’s father passed away when he was only 11, making gordon the “man of the house” at a very young age. Watching his mother, who was a teacher and principal at belforest school and in the daphne school system, he realized that education was the key and was worth any sacrifice. He put four of his five sisters through college and raised a new generation of educators: all three of his daughters and three of his grandchildren became teachers. Gordon was never a man for the spotlight; he much preferred being a “do-er” behind the scenes making everything

run smoothly. He had a personal interest in getting bayside off to a good start: he wanted his own children to get a good education. From chaperoning trips to pine mountain to driving through the night with soccer players to birmingham, the sirmons were always around. He was happy to get up at the break of day to barbeque on the bluff for fundraisers and to come lend a hand to clean the bluff and grounds after a hurricane. Whatever activity his children were doing (and there were many with five children who were all studentathletes), gordon would be there, cheering them on. He opened his farm to field trips, and to this day, third-grade bayside students still enjoy visiting life on a farm. He was so proud when bayside instituted the gordon & shirley sirmon award to one male and one female senior athlete each year in recognition of sportsmanship. Today, gordon’s youngest daughter, brenda, is a third-grade teacher at bayside, and his granddaughter emily is a fourth-grade teacher here. His daughter vivian retired from bayside. His son james is on the building and grounds board. Now that great-grandchildren are arriving, we are sure to see some sirmon children on campus again in the not-so-distant future.
'I CAN REMEMBER SITTING IN CHURCH LOOKING AT YOUR HANDS. THEY WERE HUGE COMPARED TO MINE AT THE TIME. ON THE TOP, THEY WERE ROUGH AND SCARRED WITH CALLUSES—I AM SURE FROM ALL THE HARD, HARD WORK FROM THE FARM. BUT WHEN I WOULD TURN THEM OVER, I FOUND THEM TO BE SOFT, SWEET, AND GENTLE— A PLACE WHERE I COULD PUT MY LITTLE HAND AND FIND THE COMFORT, SAFETY, AND SECURITY THAT I NEEDED. ANNUAL REPORT 2017–2018
A message from the CHairman of the board
I
t has been twelve and a half years since my daughter’s first day of kindergarten at Bayside. As parents of a child just beginning at Bayside, we didn’t know whether the school would ultimately be the right place for her. There were other school options, but we felt that Bayside offered the best opportunity for her to have an enjoyable experience while achieving the college preparation all parents desire for their children. Now, as parents of a senior, Bayside has been everything we could ask for in a school—a beautiful place, a family environment, an excellent education, and a great community of students and parents. It is much more than a place to learn the standard college prep curriculum. Bayside becomes part of the student and parents as much as the student is part of Bayside. While many schools claim to be a family, I doubt any fit that description better than Bayside. The significant financial investment parents make in Bayside is well worth the results, but the experience and memories made along the way may be of even greater value. Bayside’s teachers, coaches, and administrators are unselfishly committed to helping all Bayside students achieve their best. Their love of this school, passion for educating kids, and personal attention to students make it a privilege to be part of the Bayside family. As I finish my final year as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank my fellow board members and committee members who spend countless hours serving this school. It has been a pleasure to work alongside each one of you. Bayside’s best years are ahead!
