OFF THE BLUFF

A Message from the Head of School One of my primary focuses during the 2017–2018 academic year is working with students, parents, faculty, administrators and Board members to ensure that our school is the living embodiment of our core values: Community, Excellence, Integrity, Leadership, Respect and Responsibility. These core values are evident in all that we do. Bayside’s mission is to educate the whole child and to develop lifelong learners who make positive contributions extending far beyond the school’s campus. Our mission is on display throughout this magazine, which is full of examples of Baysiders acting as living examples of the school’s core values. Stories on these pages cover such impressive accomplishments as the 2017–2018 volleyball team’s unprecedented 16th consecutive state championship and last year’s varsity chess team’s state title. (See pages 12–13.) Perhaps most importantly, Baysiders are serving as good citizens in the larger community. Students’ sense of leadership, responsibility, respect and community is evident in such projects as hurricane-relief efforts and Canstruction 2017. (See stories on pages 17 and 21.) It is a privilege to serve as Head of School at Bayside, where innovative approaches blend with time-honored traditions. I am proud of the learning and growth that happen on this unique campus imbued with such a strong sense of family and caring. When you read the stories on these pages, I hope you agree that there is no better time to be a Bayside Admiral!

HELPING FAMILIES FIND THEIR BAYSIDE HOME MEET DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS ALISA ASCIK, WHO KNOWS FIRSTHAND THE VALUE OF AN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL EDUCATION. Ascik became Director of Admissions in August 2016. An elementary school teacher, Ascik taught Bayside kindergarten for two years before becoming Admissions Director. She has 20 years of experience teaching children in grades PK through 2 and has taught for 13 years in independent schools. Ascik herself attended independent schools in Florida for grades kindergarten through 12. She earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Central Florida. Ascik and her family relocated from Florida to Baldwin County in summer 2014 for her husband’s job. She and her husband, Steve, live in Fairhope. They have one daughter, Carlyle ’16, who is a sophomore at The University of Alabama and is a Bayside alumna. Q: Will you take us through a birds-eye view of the admissions process? The first step is the inquiry, whether it is a phone call or an online submission. Then I have an initial conversation with parents about what they are looking for. The next step is having the family visit for a campus tour. Then parents submit an application for each child, and we schedule a shadow day and an assessment for each child. The process also entails submission of records and documents that vary depending on the applicant(s)’ grade level(s). Q: What makes Bayside special? We educate the whole child: academics, athletics, arts and core values. Like many independent schools, Bayside is steeped in tradition. These long-standing traditions make the school special and give students a sense of belonging. Traditions also go hand-in-hand with the family culture that is such an important part of Bayside. At Bayside, we encourage students to grow and become better by challenging them. We are always asking students, “How can you make this better?” A big advantage independent schools offer is a high teacher-student ratio, which allows every faculty member to be engaged in every child’s education. I know this firsthand because I have experienced it as a teacher, as a parent, and before that, as a student myself. 2 | BAYSIDE ACADEMY

Q: What is the biggest selling point of Bayside? We build confident, independent learners who not only are ready for college but also are prepared to go out into the world and make a difference when they graduate. The manageable overall size of the campus and the small classrooms are big selling points. With a smaller campus, teachers know students across grade levels, watch them grow up and become a part of their learning experiences. Our teachers are there to support students through all parts of their educational journeys. Bayside’s small size fosters a family culture that makes up the fabric of this school. Our small classrooms and high teacher-student ratio facilitate one-on-one, individualized attention. This helps ensure that each student receives the support he or she needs to perform at his or her optimal ability. Q: What is the most challenging aspect of this job? The toughest aspect of this position is finding the right balance between being in my office and being out and about on campus. Time in my office is important so that I can meet with families, return phone calls and handle the administrative details of this job. But it also is important for me to interact with students and teachers so that I can stay informed of campus happenings.

Bayside Academy Legacy Students

The Bayside tradition spans generations in many families. Fifty-four students enrolled at the school in 2017–2018 are legacies, meaning their parents or grandparents are Bayside alumni.

Bayside Academy Faculty and Staff Alumni

Creativity Reins Supreme with Bayside’s Visual Arts Team Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist.”

weaving, photography, printmaking, fiber arts, needle felting, mixed media and repoussé (metal working).

“We approach our art classes like a college curriculum,” said Fine Arts Department Chair Vikki Finch. “We teach studio classes. We work with each student independently and individually.”

Even the school’s youngest students (grades PK–2) learn varied techniques and disciplines, from the basics of painting, drawing and balancing a color palette to less conventional techniques, such as felting and repoussé. Art assignments often dovetail with other subjects such as natural science. For example, when 1st graders recently studied a science unit on nature, they constructed hand-made spiders and spider habitats that displayed in the school library.

In keeping with that sentiment, Bayside’s visual arts instructors work overtime to ensure that students build a creative skillset and incorporate art into their lives.

Visual arts classes are built into the curriculum of students in grades PK–8. Students in grades 9–12 are each required to take fine arts classes; many exceed their arts requirements by graduation. Students show their works in campus exhibits throughout the year. For instance, grades PK–6 held a fall art show in the school’s Pilot Center gallery. Also in fall 2017, a Veterans Day art exhibit showcased sketches of veterans by Intermediate School students and poppy paintings by Upper School students. In addition to participating in campus exhibits, Bayside students are active in community competitions and shows as well. In fact, 40 students placed in six local community art contests in fall 2017. Baysiders study traditional painting and drawing, plus a wide range of disciplines and techniques that include the following: mosaics, ceramics, collage, sewing,

The little ones also incorporate their visual art into performances. Kindergarteners each illustrated sentences from the script of their fall 2017 Thanksgiving play. When the students stood together in sequence with their illustrated sentences, they created a living storybook. The performance integrated art, history and music. Students study famous artists—recent examples include Walter Anderson and Alexander Caldwell—and integrate those masters’ techniques into their own work. “Everything in our fall exhibit was based on Alexander Calder,” said Cindy Robles, Lower School science/art teacher. For the show, PK and kindergarten students created art from beads, while 2nd graders constructed

wire fish as part of a Calder-inspired mobile that hangs in the front gallery of The Pilot Center. In a nod to Calder’s renown for his engineered circus acts, 1st graders painted circus animals then framed the paintings in wire cages for the show. Intermediate School students recently examined works by Charley Harper—known for his simplified renderings of woodland creatures—and applied his style to their own pieces. “I give students a theme, then they are free to complete the assignment in their own way,” said Haley Hall, Intermediate School art teacher. “There is not a right way or a wrong way to do most things. I let the students be self-directed learners. I think that makes them more confident.” New digital photography classes are an exciting addition to Bayside’s Upper School visual arts curriculum for the 2017–2018 school year. The courses help students become well-rounded in the fundamentals of digital photography, from iPhonography to experimenting with manual camera exposure controls. Students build a strong foundation in the medium by focusing on technical skills, lighting, composition, and output through the use of photo editing software/apps such as Photoshop and Snapseed. This focus helps students learn to “see” and communicate visually. “We live in a digital, technological world in which people communicate with pictures,” said Upper School art teacher Kristy Johnson-Snell '05, who teaches the digital photography classes. “It’s important that students learn not only how to create images but also how to read and look deeper into them. Photography is powerful, not only as an art form and record of history, but also as a tool to affect environmental and social change.” Upper School students in advanced placement art take

their skills to the highest levels. The studio classroom of Upper School art teacher Carrie Jackson teems with drawings, paintings and countless multimedia projects combining two or more techniques. In one multimedia project, students carved a linoleum block, stamped it onto canvas, painted the canvas and sewed it into pillows. In a project employing encaustic techniques, each student sketched and painted a subject on paper, collaged it to a recycled board, melted beeswax on top, etched the wax, then rubbed it with a dark oil paint, which allowed the etched detail to show. The quality of the students’ works is impressive. One can easily imagine the items selling in a home décor shop. Upper School students especially appreciate the balance that art infuses into the daily rigors of their academic regimen. “I think a lot of students see art as a stress reliever,” said Jackson. “It promotes creativity, attention to detail and problem-solving. It also encourages experimentation and taking calculated risks. I enjoy helping some of the more analytical types tap into their unknown art skills.” A key benefit of art classes is that they promote a creative approach to problem-solving. A recent Bloomberg Job Skills Report cited creative problemsolving as a vital skill that employers value yet have a hard time finding in employees. Fine Arts Department Chair Vikki Finch believes that Bayside graduates are well on their way to helping close that skills gap. “Our students are learning how to solve problems using unexpected, outside-thebox approaches,” Finch said. “Our curriculum is a continually evolving program. We are always trying to reach students in new ways and offer new challenges. It’s not enough to know basic skills and techniques. You must be able to use them in a creative way.”

OFF THE BLUFF

Interdisciplinary Classes Foster Integrated Learning Approach Bayside teachers and administrators are collaborating to create interdisciplinary opportunities that enable students to apply what they learn in a project-based setting.

In fall 2016 the school launched an innovative Upper

service and outreach into the school’s curriculum. By way of example: One Southern Mystique class assignment touched on psychology and examined the effect of trauma on soldiers. During their research, students learned that Southerners serve in the military at a higher percentage than people in other U.S. regions.

On any given day, a different teacher tackles topics from the perspective of his or her discipline. For example, one assignment had students create a cookbook of recipes addressing the ingredient shortages that occurred during the Depression.

One of the questions students examined was, “How can we support these warriors after they return home?” In exploring answers to that question, one student developed a fundraiser in the form of a lacrosse tournament, the Battleship Shootout, which took place in Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile in February 2017. The event was hosted by the Mobile Mavericks Youth Lacrosse League. Proceeds from the event supported Veterans Recovery Resources and the Wounded Warrior Project.

School interdisciplinary course called Understanding the Southern Mystique. This course investigates Southern identity through these disciplines: art, film, music, politics, psychology, environmental studies and race relations.

Our interdisciplinary courses give young minds the opportunity to explore topics they are interested in and make deep connections between different subjects. Another assignment required students to write 20 journal entries reflective of the Civil War era: 10 written from the perspective of a slave, and 10 written from the perspective of a slave owner. Assignments such as these are giving students an intrinsic understanding of how events in the past have shaped our region’s history, culture, people, politics and race relations. Bayside’s interdisciplinary courses are reaching beyond academics and are incorporating community

6 | BAYSIDE ACADEMY

The High Tide Southern Music Showcase is another example showing how Bayside is including the community in students’ learning process. This unique program in spring 2017 featured some of Alabama’s most accomplished historical figures in music, including the legendary Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section Swampers and Mobile’s Jimmy Hall, founder and lead singer of the Southern rock group Wet Willie. In March 2017, Bayside students in grades 9–12 heard first-hand the insights and experiences of Muscle Shoals Swampers during a day of planned questionand-answer/panel discussion sessions. In conjunction with the music showcase, Bayside presented a reception highlighting a historical collection of Muscle

Shoals photographs taken by Dick Cooper, music photojournalist and former curator of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. The exhibit also included art by students from the Southern Mystique class. The exhibit and reception accompanied a free, open-to-thepublic screening of the documentary film “Muscle Shoals.” The High Tide Southern Music Showcase also included a live concert that was open to the public and featured the Swampers with Jimmy Hall and additional legendary musicians from Muscle Shoals. Through these High Tide events, students gain an understanding of history as it affects the present: who we are today and how we live our daily lives in terms of art, culture and music. High Tide and the Understanding the Southern Mystique class also give students realworld experience organizing, planning, promoting and executing a community event. “Our interdisciplinary courses give young minds the opportunity to explore topics they are interested in and make deep connections between different subjects,” said Douglas Robertson ’05, Upper School history teacher and interdisciplinary course instructor. “Students are given a chance to own their learning—as teachers we’re just along for the ride.” The 2017 High Tide events were so successful that Bayside is holding similar events in 2017–2018 as part of the Understanding the Southern Mystique class. In late November 2017, Upper School students enjoyed a concert and a question-and-answer session with Phil Proctor and Stan Foster, who play in the Marlow Boys. The event kicked off the 2017–2018 High Tide Southern Music series.

Interdisciplinary Classes Launched in 2017–2018 The Good Life What does it mean to have a good life? Students attempt to answer this question as they reflect on the human condition and engage in cross-cultural examination of fine art, music, literature, film, history, religion, philosophy, psychology, nutritional sciences and environmental sciences. Topics are explored in a variety of perspectives from personal to societal and global. The class culminates with a Capstone Project, which requires students to get involved in a service-oriented project of their interest in order to make their school, community and planet a better place.

Video Production Course This course helps students build fundamental skills associated with audio, video and television productions. Students create original programming such as news-based Admiral TV productions and event coverage for the Bayside Academy Livestream Channel. (See pages 8–9 for more details.)

A

nyone who has stepped foot in the backstage area of The Pilot Center in the last three months has probably experienced a feeling of awe after seeing all the new equipment. Every inch of the room is covered in lights, cameras, interviewing stations, green screens, microphones and more. It feels as if you have entered a real-life newsroom for a TV station. And in a way, you have. This room is where you will find the home of Bayside Academy’s recently organized video production classroom, as well as the home of Admiral TV. The course is taught by Bill Rowan, Catt Sirten and Douglas Robertson. Rowan and Sirten have come from their respective lines of work to teach Bayside students all about video production for news media, including (but not limited to) using video editing software, operating film equipment, conducting interviews, working as a team and bringing it all together to form one amazing final product. The new instructors have a plethora of career experiences under their belts. Rowan has worked for 40 years in marketing and sales management. After hiring and training college graduates for work, he realized that many students lacked critical thinking and management skills. “The team-building and critical-thinking skills required in most modern business environments, and by most professions, are typically not integrated into the college curriculum,” Rowan said.

He recognized that the key to this type of understanding is to be fully immersed in a studio learning environment. He then decided to develop a curriculum at Spring Hill College, where there is now a Badger TV studio and control room.

Catt Sirten, who is known by many as the personality of “Radio Avalon” on 92ZEW, has been working in radio for more than 40 years. In the last 25 years while working on the Gulf Coast, he has won Best Radio Personality eight times. Sirten says that music led him to working in radio. “I’ve always been in love with music ... all kinds of music,” he said. “Fortunately, I was able to work with folks who showed me methods of fusing the structure of radio with artistic expression.” Bayside’s very own Douglas Robertson ’05 has also joined the teaching staff for the video production course. Robertson said that the reason he was interested in instructing the course was that he gets to see students think outside of the box and exercise critical thinking. “I’ve been making a lot of videos for my classes and for school events over the past couple of years,” Robertson said. “The process takes a balance of creativity, organization and technical ability. When you get to see your finished product and share it with others, it’s a pretty fulfilling experience.” Rowan and Sirten were first brought to Bayside during the Understanding the Southern Mystique class’s High Tide Southern Music Showcase. They filmed the performance for “Live From Avalon,” which was broadcast on Alabama Public Television in October 2017. Some students acted as interns during the production process, which led to a conversation about the creation of a media center on our campus.

So far, students in this course have learned about the components of making a television production, such as writing stories, interviewing, scripting, operating the equipment, and learning the fundamentals of programs such as Adobe Premiere and Audition. Robertson noted, “I’m learning just as much as the students, which is fun.”

The team-building and criticalthinking skills required in most modern business environments, and by most professions, are typically not integrated into the college curriculum. The instructors of Bayside’s video production course have expressed high hopes for the future of the Admiral TV program. Rowan notes that he would like “to develop a production crew that can present multi-disciplinary television programming and event coverage of the highest quality.” Sirten adds that he wants this program to give students a “head-start in their collegiate career,” as well as “highlight Bayside’s innovative educational methods.” Admiral TV will continue to be shown during regular Tuesday assemblies.

WAS NEVER SO SWEET!

Bayside Academy’s varsity volleyball team won their 16th consecutive Alabama High School Athletic Association 3A Volleyball State Championship on November 2, 2017.

No other Alabama high school team has won the AHSAA State Championship for 16 years running. In addition to holding the AHSAA record for most consecutive state titles, Bayside also holds the most overall state titles (26) and the most state titles under the same coach (23). The Admirals became state champions for the 16th straight year when they defeated Montgomery Academy at the Class 3A championship match of the 2017 AHSAA Volleyball State Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama. After losing the first game 23–25, Bayside bounced back to win the second and third games 25–17 and 25–21. They lost game four 22–25, thus forcing game five, which they won 15–13. “What you guys accomplished is incredible,” Head Volleyball Coach Ann Schilling told her team after the win. “Some of you were not even born when the streak started. When I stop and think about the extreme pressure you have been playing under, it’s just amazing. This was a true team effort; every single one of you was important to make this happen.”

Head Volleyball Coach Ann Schilling Tapped for State Hall of Fame

Head Volleyball Coach Ann Schilling

will be inducted into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame in March 2018. In November 2017, Schilling made history by leading Bayside’s Lady Admirals volleyball team to their 16th straight Alabama High School Athletic Association 3A Volleyball State Championship. Bayside’s varsity volleyball team under Schilling has won 23 state championships overall. In other honors, Schilling was named National Volleyball Coach of the Year in 2010 by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Association. She has more than 1,400 wins, which places her among the leaders in the nation, and has been named State Coach of the Year by the Birmingham News five

times (1992, 2000, 2007, 2011, 2012). Schilling was inducted into the Bayside Academy Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. Among her numerous distinctions are the R.L. Lindsay Service Award for volleyball (2006), the John L. Finley Award for Superb Achievement (2004 and 2014) and the prepvolleyball.com Co-National Coach of the Year in 2009. Schilling graduated in 1982 from McGill-Toolen Catholic High School in Mobile. There she played volleyball for legendary coach Becky Dickinson, who is already a member of the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame. Schilling received her college degree at Auburn in 1987. She is in her 31st year of coaching (all at Bayside) and has led the Bayside program to the state playoffs all 31 years of her career.

Bayside Acad-

emy’s 2016–2017 varsity chess team won the Alabama State Scholastic Chess Championship on March 12, 2017, at Bob Jones High School in Madison, Alabama. The team shared the championship title with Indian Springs. The win marked the varsity team’s third state championship in the past four years and its fourth in the past six years. Unlike Bayside athletic competitions, this was a 7A state championship (there are no class divisions in chess). Bayside also fielded a middle school and an elementary school team at the 2017 Alabama State Scholastic Chess Championship. While those teams did not place, every player scored for Bayside. Bayside Academy’s 2017 chess team received a certificate of congratulations from the Daphne City Council and Daphne Mayor Dane Haygood during the Council’s meeting on April 17, 2017.

2017–2018 Chess Team Recap To Date The 2017–2018 Bayside chess team completed its regular season with a bang in February 2018 at the Mobile-Baldwin County Chess League Tournament. The varsity team took home the first place trophy after a showdown against Alabama School of Math & Science (ASMS). This is the fifth consecutive year the varsity team has won this championship. The win also marks Bayside varsity’s 13th Mobile-Baldwin County Chess League championship in 15 years. Also at the tournament, the elementary team blasted its way to first place during this inaugural year that the league has offered a separate elementary division. In other action, the JV team finished the season with a .500 record, while the middle school team finished fourth. Next up for the Admirals is the Mayor’s Cup, where they will compete against Daphne Public School for the city championship. The state tournament is Mar. 24–25 in Mobile, and nationals will take place in April in Atlanta.

Scott Ennis ’88 Is a Natural at Making Patients Look Good Alumnus Scott Ennis ’88 works in a realm where art and science intersect. As a world-renowned plastic surgeon, Ennis specializes in endoscopic, minimal-incision breast, body and facial surgery emphasizing a natural look. He is founder and owner of Ennis Plastic Surgery in Destin, Florida, and is founder and CEO of Breast Enhancement Centers of America in Miami and Atlanta. Ennis is certified by both The American Board of Surgery and The American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a member of both national and international plastic surgery societies. Ennis considers himself an artist first and foremost. While a student at Bayside, he won first place in the Congressional Art Competition, among numerous additional art accolades. As a result, his artwork, “The Dove,” hung in the U.S. Capitol for a year. He was president of Bayside’s Student Government Association and was a member of the National Honor Society. Ennis received his bachelor’s degree from Birmingham-Southern College under a presidential honors scholarship. He attended medical school and did a full general surgery residency at The University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he earned the Best Intern Award and was named Outstanding Chief Resident. Upon graduation from medical school, he was recruited for a plastic surgery fellowship at the University of Virginia. While at UVA, Ennis published a paper in The American Surgeon on a new procedure to repair injuries suffered by victims of major trauma. Surgeons around the world now use this procedure. Additionally, Ennis was honored with the Raymond F. Morgan Award for original research in plastic surgery.

A Conversation with Scott Ennis ʼ88 What drew you to your career?

What are your biggest career challenges?

As early as 2nd grade, I knew I wanted to be a surgeon. The blend of art and science with surgery is what drew me to this field.

It’s difficult when a patient presents a problem or an issue that can’t be fixed, such as scar tissue from a trauma injury or burn injuries from a bad car wreck. Sometimes your best hope is making the scar better.

What is your proudest career accomplishment to date? I don’t have one single proudest moment. I love my work because it gives me the opportunity to change something that bothers somebody and to affect that person’s life in a positive way—whether it’s a mom with childbirth scars, a teen with a bump in her nose or a dad with extra skin on his eyelids. It is rewarding to see a patient’s personality blossom after I have been able to fix his or her area(s) of concern.

14 | BAYSIDE ACADEMY

Facial skin cancer is another condition that presents tough challenges. It can be difficult to figure out a way to repair someone’s face and make it look good in those situations where a big hole is left after unhealthy tissue is removed. I am constantly faced with new challenges to fix something I haven’t seen before.

OFF THE BLUFF

Which classes and teachers influenced you the most or had the most lasting impact on you?

What does your typical day look like? Five days a week I operate starting at 6:30 a.m. until 3 or 4 p.m. I perform 50 to 70 surgeries a month and a wide range of procedures, mostly cosmetic based. When I am not in surgery, I see four to eight new patients daily who are presenting new challenges and problems. My patient population ranges from children as young as 10 to adults in their 80s. Often my work with children focuses on birthmarks and burn scars. I always enjoy meeting and talking with my patients and am blessed to have been visited by some very famous people over the years.

What is your fondest Bayside memory? If I had to pick one event, it would be graduation on The Bluff. The friendships and relationships formed at Bayside are what make the school so unique. Bayside is a family. I still keep in touch with many of my classmates.

To what core Bayside value(s) [community, excellence, integrity, leadership, respect, responsibility] do you relate the most, and why? It’s hard to choose only one. It is all those values together that make Bayside what it is and that create the Bayside family.

How did Bayside help shape you as an individual?

Phyllis Horne, my art teacher, was amazing. She had a way of drawing out our creativity and helping us translate onto paper what was inside of us. I remember our history teacher, Barry Grogan, saying that the media is the fourth branch of government and that it is the most powerful branch because it controls the other three. He knew that way back in the mid-’80s. I have vivid memories of Kelton Tidwell teaching physics lessons by telling fascinating stories about an elephant and a mouse who were best friends. I recall Virginia Stallings engaging us in “To Kill a Mockingbird” and making it riveting even though previously we had no interest in literature. It was not so much the classes as it was the teachers who influenced me in a positive way. At the time, I did not fully realize and appreciate their impact, but now I do.

What makes Bayside unique? Bayside brings together in one location a group of students, teachers and individuals who share common values and create something very special that extends far beyond the individuals themselves.

If you had one piece of advice to offer Bayside students today, what would it be? If you have a dream, go for it. Never quit dreaming. Bayside is the launching pad for something special. If you can dream it, do it. When I finished my plastic surgery fellowship at UVA, the faculty surgeons hosted a dinner for me and the other graduate in the Rotunda where Thomas Jefferson wrote his memoirs. That evening was a high point for me. I ended up sitting in Thomas Jefferson’s chair, but it all started at Bayside.

What’s next for you? This is an exciting time for me and my practice. We are expanding and soon will open practices in Beverly Hills, Nashville and Baltimore.

Before I attended Bayside, I was going through the motions. I would show up and take a test. But Bayside emphasized all those core values within a select group of people [students, teachers and parents] who became like an extended family. Being immersed in Bayside’s environment, people and values gave me the solid direction I needed as a student.

T E A M (s c i e n c e, t e ch n ol o g y, engineering, art and math) continues to engage students of all grades and ages at Bayside Academy. The latest development at Bayside is the creation in 2017–2018 of the Innovation Station, which is where STEAM comes alive. New STEAM activities at Bayside’s Innovation Station began in summer 2017 with the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Camp. Robotics classes, 8th grade STEAM classes and oceanography II also create in this space, as well as the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) team and the National Ocean Science Bowl team. Additionally, Innovation Station is open for other classes to come imagine and build projects, such as Upper School math/science teacher Hillary Rolin’s recent bridgeengineering competition with her math students. True STEAM lessons incorporate a design element with a connection to the community or to world issues. In STEAM classes, students make observations about the world around them and then investigate ways to solve real-world problems. 18 | BAYSIDE ACADEMY

One such problem is microplastics, which are becoming increasingly prevalent in our world’s oceans. Most marine debris originates from litter dumped directly into the ocean and from waterways connecting land to the ocean. Plastics break down into microplastics and never fully decompose. Microplastics are problematic because they form a surface area for toxins to latch onto and because they are eaten by ocean species. Marine animals that ingest plastics have high levels of pollutants in their systems. Innovation Station is the hub where Bayside students are devising solutions to the microplastics problem. In support of 6th grade science teacher Sally Wilson’s class, oceanography II students created a microplastics sieve that flushes samples of beach sand through filters. The filtered sand contains microplastics that can be seen through a microscope. Students are using the sieve to compile data on sand samples from different locations as they investigate solutions to the global microplastics issue. In the

for infusing STEAM into Bayside’s curriculum and enrichment programs. The Lego Mindstorm EV3s are used in Innovation Station for grades 3 through 8 to teach coding and design thinking. Students use the units to create everything from robotic dogs to Mars rovers. Challenges entail use of light and color sensors to maneuver through courses and around obstacles. Innovation Station also provides space for Bayside’s second annual underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) team to design and construct the frame and driver for the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) competition at Dauphin Island Sea Lab in May 2018. During summer 2017, four Bayside teachers attended training at DISL and subsequently built a scout-level team of 5th–8th graders and a ranger-level team of students in grades 9–12. Student team members are working on technical aspects of the competition as well as marketing and communication components.

future, oceanography II students will train and collaborate with 6th graders in this data collection and analysis. STEAM classes for all 8th grade students are taught by Upper School math teacher Angel Bermudez in Innovation Station. These hands-on classes inspire technological creativity with lessons about computer coding, engineering design, basic circuitry and basic physics mechanics. Assignments have included calculating the distance robots travel and determining the number of rotations of a robot’s wheels.

These hands-on classes inspire technological creativity with lessons about computer coding, engineering design, basic circuitry and basic physics mechanics. Innovation Station is an important community space that provides Bayside students and teachers with a designated area for building, collaborating, inventing and problem-solving. It fosters creativity and offers students the opportunity to find solutions to realworld issues in a wide range of areas, from outermost space to the deepest oceans and all realms in between.

A new elective offered to juniors and seniors is the robotics class led by Bermudez and Upper School computer science teacher Sarah Kalaris. In the class students are learning to program by using the Vex Robotics Design System, which is a program that is rich with career opportunities in STEAM fields. Additionally, students are engaged in advanced circuitry—including soldering circuit boards—and are learning about the physics of electricity. Project-based challenges incorporate a strong emphasis on the engineering design process. LEGO Mindstorm EV3s are yet another method BAYSIDE ACADEMY | 19

Lower School Innovation Station Fosters a Hands-on Approach to Problem-Solving Lower School science/art teacher Cindy Robles spearheads Bayside’s Innovation Station for grades PK–2. Her teaching career spans 19 years, all of it at Bayside. Robles was recognized as Baldwin County’s Air Force Association Teacher of the Year for STEM in 2016. She recently earned her early childhood technology (ECT) certification through Tufts University. The selective program focuses on teaching technology and engineering to youngsters in a developmentally appropriate way that focuses on playful learning. Robles is currently enrolled in Tufts University’s teacher engineering education program, which helps teachers inspire students in applying hands-on engineering principles to creative problem-solving. Robles holds a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in audiology from the University of Florida.

Bayside students in grades PK–2 have their own Inno-

vation Station spearheaded by Lower School science/art teacher Cindy Robles. Innovation Station is hard-wiring a problem-solving approach into the minds of Bayside’s youngest students. In this specially designated workspace, Lower School students devise solutions to real-world problems by applying and integrating principles of science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). “My goal is to teach children how to apply engineering to improve the quality of our lives,” said Robles. “The engineering-design process is important no matter what field a student ultimately pursues. We all encounter problems, and we all must know how to be creative problem-solvers.”

Lower School Innovation Station/STEAM Highlights • Students collaborated to design and engineer from LEGOS a chair that was required to pass fit, comfort and drop tests. • Students engineered boats and tested their buoyancy. • They created a model roller-coaster exploring the forces of gravity. • Students as young as PK and kindergarten programmed a Code-a-pillar robot to reach its destination. This exercise

gave Bayside’s littlest Admirals the opportunity to collaborate, sequence, think critically and problem-solve while applying screen-less technology. The Code-a-pillar exercise complemented field work: Students searched campus for Monarch butterfly larvae and monitored growth, molting patterns and eating habits of the Monarch butterfly. • PK and kindergarten students programmed KIBO screenless robots to reach specific destinations. The exercise integrated art and natural science. Students sketched and painted acorn weevils and attached their renderings to the robots. Students then programmed the robots to travel to a specific spot representing the location where the robot weevil would lay its imaginary eggs. • First graders engaged in story-telling by using ScratchJr, a visual programming language that introduces coding skills and teaches children to think creatively and reason systematically. Children snapped together graphical programming blocks to make characters jump, laugh and sing. • Second graders used LEGO WeDo 2.0 to apply motors and sensors while programming robots to accomplish specific tasks such as simulating bees pollinating flowers. • Students in grades kingdergarten through 2 are using the Engineering is Elementary curriculum designed by the Museum of Science, Boston. The curriculum presents real-world problems then has students design and engineer solutions to these problems. During the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, 2nd graders designed filtration systems to remove pollutants from drinking water.

It’s Full STEAM Ahead on Bayside’s Campus Below are partial highlights of Baysideʼs many STEAM activities.

Canstruction 2017 Upper School history teacher Adam Richardson’s 8th grade students participated in a “canstruction” competition using canned and boxed items donated during the Parents Association’s campus-wide food drive in November 2017. Canstruction culminated before Thanksgiving with the donation of 1700 cans to Ecumenical Ministries of Baldwin County. The project integrated history and STEAM disciplines and challenged students to research and design transportation structures that have played major roles in history. Canstruction and the canned food drive are great examples of how Bayside is integrating into the curriculum the school’s core values of community, excellence, integrity, leadership, respect and responsibility.

Intermediate School STEAM Highlights Third graders participate in a weekly “STREAM” lesson that coordinates with their reading and social studies topics and includes science, art and engineering activities. Students engineered buildings using two- and three-dimensional shapes built with toothpicks and candy. Students designed and built boats to explore buoyancy and tested the boats in Mobile Bay. Third and 4th graders are tracking growth of the school’s chocolate lab, Tater, throughout the school year. Students periodically measure his weight, paw size, tail length, body length and height and chart these data points. This work teaches students how to record, track and apply data to real-world scenarios. Students in 5th grade science use STEMScopes, a digital, hands-on, inquiry-based curriculum. Each lesson includes a series of investigations and activities to bring science to life. In one activity, 5th graders were given three water samples, one of which was contaminated. Students were tasked with identifying the contaminated sample. Students worked in groups to design methods for identifying unseen substances. They then tested their methods and presented their findings. In their study of different types of energy, 6th graders built vehicles from rubber bands, straws, spools and other materials and designed boats run by propellers. Sixth graders also studied global geography through current events and explored how different types of soil and development affect the flooding of a city.

STEAM Competitions & Fairs National Ocean Sciences Bowl: Upper School students competed in February 2018 in the Hurricane Bowl, which is a regional National Ocean Sciences Bowl. ROV Competition: Bayside’s underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) varsity team and the school’s new 5th–8th grade team will design and construct the frame and driver for the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) competition at Dauphin Island Sea Lab May 4-6, 2018. ANNUAL REPORT 2016–2017

A Message from the Chairman of the Board It has been an honor to serve in my first year as chairman of the board of trustees. Although the year has flown by, not a moment has been wasted by our school’s talented, dedicated, and tireless faculty and staff. In a concerted effort, they strive to raise the bar of achievement for our highly capable students. This effort is orchestrated by the strong guidance of Head of School Michael Papa. The board of trustees could not be more proud of his leadership. He has done a wonderful job of inspiring and empowering those around him to advance our school to greater success. The board of trustees is charged with guiding the school to fulfill its mission statement. In executing this charge, we must ensure that the school remains financially stable, maintains and upgrades its facilities, and follows a strategic plan established by the board. The board accomplishes these tasks through the work of the following committees: finance, strategic planning, development, buildings and grounds, audit, policy and the committee on trustees. These committees are comprised of board members and non-board member parents, faculty and staff. I want to thank all members of these committees for their vital contribution to our school and its future. A brief synopsis of the committees’ work this year is below.

Strategic Planning: A new strategic plan was finalized in the 2015–2016 school year after two years of devoted work by this committee. This plan is the foundation of the board’s charge to the Head of School and is analyzed and revised annually through a standing committee. At the end of each year, the Head of School reports to the board the school’s progress in implementing the plan and achieving its goals. I am pleased to report that the school has made positive progress over the last two years in fulfilling this plan. We expect to realize further progress in this year’s assessment. Development: Our development committee is the workhorse of the board year after year. The school’s financial well-being

depends on the efforts of this committee annually. The fundraising process never ends and takes an enormous amount of volunteer time. This year’s development committee has been superb and deserves commendation. With the limitless energy of Advancement Director Taylor Houser, coupled with an equally enthusiastic committee of board members and non-board member parents, the school exceeded its aggressive Annual Giving goal by 10 percent. Thanks to all who made this campaign a success. Most importantly, thank you to all parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty and staff who contributed to Annual Giving.

Buildings and Grounds: Each year, this committee works to prioritize a long wish list of projects using limited funds. Over the

past five years, our campus has seen annual improvements in both form and function. Our most recent major project was the installation of a much-needed new track surface. It was made possible in large part by the generous donation of a loyal supporter. This project, along with many other projects including the fence project completed last year, has made our campus look the best it ever has. I also want to recognize the grounds crew that does a fantastic job keeping the campus in top form.

Campus Master Planning: This committee is an ad hoc committee formed this year to work with the school’s master plan designer and consultant, Barganier Davis Sims Architects, to establish a campus master plan. We hope to finalize the plan by this summer and to begin buildout during our 50th anniversary school year of 2020–2021.

There has never been a better time to be a part of the Bayside family, regardless of your affiliation with the school. It is a place filled with selfless teachers, coaches and administrators who work hard every day to help our students reach their potential. This school will continue its tradition of success while always avoiding complacency. Thank you to everyone who has helped make this year successful!
