WELCOME LETTER FROM THE FOUNDER Every year I set a personal goal that involves adding something new to Boston Fashion Week. It’s not easy after all these years, but in the end that’s what fashion is about — always adding something fresh to the mix. Instead of focusing on the latest trends I decided to concentrate on a more enduring and valuable resource, local talent.

The Boston Fashion Week community has been consistent in its dedication to seeking out and celebrating new fashion professionals since 1995, but this year I set us a very ambitious goal. To mark the year 2017 I thought we should put 17 new designers on Boston’s fashion radar. It sounded like a great idea until I sent out the first email. Once it went out there was no taking it back. What if we couldn’t find 17 new faces? I don’t mind saying that I was more than a little nervous about the prospect of falling short. I’m happy to report that we surpassed our goal. The name of the initiative had to be changed to 17+ because we found 18 designers who were deserving of this distinction. It was then that I realized why this project meant so much to me. It was a big ask but the talent was there, and now the 23rd annual Boston Fashion Week will begin with an abundance of talent on the very first night of this weeklong series of events. I want to personally thank Nasrin Bigonahy, Melina Cortes-Nmili, Rufus Dixon, Meghan Doyle, Danyela Galeano, Anthony Gregorio, Afshan Iragorri, Margaret Jacobs, Luna Joachim, Ruby McAloon, Charles Neumann, Hely Nguyen, Anna Nieman, Jenna Piantedosi, Graciela Rivas Leslin, Sydney Siagel, Cecile Thieulin, and Danya Xie for reaffirming my faith in our local fashion industry. Make sure to check out the Thank You page because it takes a big, powerful, and talented team to make projects like these a success. In addition to this great initiative there are many wonderful events taking place during the week and throughout the rest of the season. The sheer volume and diversity of programming prove again and again that fashion is an integral part of the Boston lifestyle. I hope you enjoy the week of festivities, but remember to put your money where your wardrobe is, and buy local. That’s the bottom line when it comes to supporting local talent and keeping it here.
