“
t’s a nice place to live and work,” my husband said, diplomatically, of the Midwest town where he grew up. “It’s not a destination.” How lucky are we in Chesapeake Country—a good place to live and work and also a destination people dream of when the weather gets warm? The region’s water activities, connections to nature, fresh seafood and ambience all make it very enticing to people from land-locked areas. As for us, we get to enjoy these perks daily if we want to—they’re right in our backyard. But if I’m being honest, I could do a better job of taking advantage of our waterfront locales. I’ve noticed that I usually do more Bay-centric activities when I’m entertaining out-of-town friends than
I otherwise would: Ride a water taxi! Pick crabs at a table by the water! When I ignore our glorious Bay, it’s usually because I’m doing the laundry, or taking the kids to soccer, or picking up endless LEGOs. The pandemic restrictions in place last summer also put a damper on our ability to freely meander through small towns, or eat and drink at our favorite dockside restaurants. But that’s even more reason to explore these destinations now. Beginning with this issue, CBM Bay Weekly will hone in on the best spots in Chesapeake Country where you can make a weekend of it. We’re taking you to different waterfront towns in the area— by boat or by car—and taking a page from our sister publication

and our roundup of spots to eat, drink, boat, and relax will make you glad to live here on the Bay. I have been to my husband’s hometown in the Midwest, and he’s right: it’s a good place to live and work. The people are nice, and the ballfields are green. But there’s no Bay anywhere to be found—no local blue crabs or sunsets on the water, no water taxi to whisk you away. Wisely, my husband decided years ago to make Maryland his home, so we can enjoy a weekend on the water anytime. Get me to Deale, please! p

THOMAS POINT LIGHT U.S. POSTAGE STAMP TO BE RELEASED BY MEG WALBURN VIVIANO & CHERYL COSTELLO
T
he U.S. Postal Service’s newest collection of mid-Atlantic lighthouse stamps confirms what we on the Bay already knew: Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is a piece of nationally-important history. Set for release in early August, the five newest stamps celebrating American lighthouses includes Thomas Point, Montauk Point, N.Y., Harbor of Refuge, Del., Navesink, NJ., and Erie Harbor Pierhead, Pa. The long-running Lighthouse series (issued seven times now) has been illustrated for years by the late artist Howard Koslow, and these stamps are his work as well. While the lighthouse selections for the 2021 collection were to be top secret until USPS announced them, the news was no surprise to Thomas Point lighthouse manager John Potvin.
“I found out about it about two years ago and was sworn to secrecy because the United States Post Office does like to let these things out of the bag too early,” Potvin tells Bay Bulletin. Built in 1875, Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is the last surviving screwpile lighthouse intact its original location. Potvin puts its significance into perspective: “It’s one of only 12 lighthouses in the country that is a National Historic Landmark. It falls into the same category as the Maryland State House or the White House or the Washington Monument.” The prestigious historic landmark designation bestowed in 1999 is a strong argument
4 • BAY WEEKLY • June 10 - June 17, 2021
for why Thomas Point deserves to be incuded in the series, he points out. So, what does Potvin think of the depiction of the lighthouse he has worked to preserve? “I like it, with one small caveat,” he tells us. “The railing around the lantern at the very top of
the lighthouse in the artist rendering is black. But the actual railing on top of the lighthouse is white. It was painted black when the Coast Guard took over the lighthouse in 1939.” In 2004, Potvin explains, preservationists studied early renderings of the screwpile, discovered it had originally been white, and repainted it back to white. Preservation work on the lighthouse ramped up in 2019 with a major renovation project to replace some of its structural pieces. Bay Bulletin reported throughout the progress of this major project. Just about complete in summer 2020 despite the pandemic, the lighthouse has reopened for its popular tours beginning Sat., June 5. The renovations are 99 percent finished now, Potvin says. So when can we get our hands on these special stamps? Their release date is Aug. 6. Potvin is planning an unveiling of the five new stamps in the series at Annapolis City Dock on Aug. 7 at 2 p.m. The public is invited, and details will be forthcoming. “The Chesapeake shines for everybody. The Chesapeake itself is a national treasure. So many people pass by that lighthouse, so many people regard that as home. And I think it’s very important to everybody here in the Chesapeake to get recognized for what it is.”

ou may remember Last Mango, Jimmy B u f f e t t ’s Caribbean-blue-hulled boat, on its cruise down the Chesapeake last summer. Buffett was in town to take in his favorite watersports and to shoot a music video. Now, there’s another strong local tie for the laid-back entertainer. Buffett’s apparel brand, Last Mango Boatworks, which raises money for charity, has chosen an Annapolis teen as a youth ambassador. Julianna Wasiuta is among just nine applicants chosen na-
tionally for the new 12-month program dedicated to helping others to “see the good side,” as Last Mango puts it. Julianna embodies the spirit of finding the positive—she was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010, just before she turned 4 years old. Now, after more than a decade with cancer in her rearview mirror, it’s only fitting that Julianna’s life experience is helping others in a similar boat, through the nonprofit Casey Cares Foundation. “I was once a recipient, so I know how it impacts the person who is receiving the work,” she says. Julianna is active with the foundation, which supports young cancer patients and their families with quality-of-life improvements. Among other things, she helped

She and her mom, Cathy Wasuita, learned about the Last Mango Boatworks Youth Ambassador program when Cathy went online to buy her husband a Last Mango t-shirt. The family had seen the “Cheeseburger in Paradise” singer stop on the Bay last fall, taking photos as he spent time in Annapolis to shoot a music video at Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse. Last Mango youth program. They accepted applications from young people nationwide, and Julianna was among the nine selected from 53 applicants. “I think the most important thing that we’re trying to do is engage the youth in understanding and knowing the importance of giving back,” Sarah LaSorsa explains. Captain Vinnie says Julianna fit the bill. “Our whole tag line is ‘seeing the good side of life’. When you read her application, you see that she took a situation that she could have felt bad about or felt that she got dealt a bad hand and you could tell that she was looking at the positive,” he says. She’s only 15, but Julianna already knows she wants to be a doctor. She’ll continue to help Casey Cares Foundation yearround, and when she someday applies to med school, she’ll have Youth Ambassador for Last Mango Boatworks on her resumé. Volunteers are now working to make sure that unwanted plant species aren’t encroaching at the Bacon Ridge Natural Area in a pilot program funded by the Chaney Enterprise Foundation Fund and the Environment Anne Arundel Fund, both components of the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County. With guidance from Scenic Rivers staff, small groups of volunteers will gather weekly to remove invasive plant species in the Bacon Ridge Natural Area, helping to protect the 630 acres and 12 miles of trails in this area. that can grow quickly and spread rapidly is considered invasive. Invasive species come from a different country or habitat through things like trade, markets, nurseries, or even by accident. While many of these plants will die off or become naturalized in their new environment, others will take off and invade the area they have been transplanted to. “Invasive species are incredibly successful at taking over a habitat and destroying the biodiversity that makes it a healthy and strong ecosystem,” says SRLT Executive Director Sarah Knebel. “They don’t have any natural predators to help keep them in check and they end up taking over.” While varieties such as wavyleaf basketgrass, Japanese stiltgrass, multiflora rose, and Japanese honeysuckle, may sound beautiful and harmless, their effects can be damaging to the natural surroundings and functionality of the native environments, throwing the ecosystem off balance. For example, multiflora rose was brought here intentionally because it was a fast-growing plant that was often used by farmers as hedges. Yet, those who planted it didn’t realize that the desirable properties of these species, like fast growth or shade, could also cause a lot of problems in the long run. Knebel says that while invasive species control is important, it can be an expensive undertaking so volunteers are crucial to supporting these efforts. Lindsay Smith, stewardship coordinator says that anyone is welcome to join the effort. It’s recommended for

Staff members will train volunteers on how to identify species and will be available to answer any questions. Their hope is that volunteers will take the knowledge gained and bring it back to their own properties and communities. “We are not anti-development. We strive for the balance between development and conservation,” Knebel says. “We need houses, offices, and stores, but we also need the beauty and functionality of the natural world.” Sign up for sessions at www.srlt.org

Southern Maryland Theater Reopens to Audiences BY KATHY KNOTTS
L
ive indoor theater has returned to Southern Maryland with the opening of the New Direction Community Theater’s production of Tom Dulack’s comedy Breaking Legs. Breaking Legs’ cast come from three Southern Maryland counties, and includes Sid Curl, Justin McCright, Monica Jones, William Righter, Robert Sebo and David M. Thomas. The show has been designed with the pandemic in mind. “We placed the stage area so that windows can be opened on both sides to allow cross-ventilation,” said director Rick Thompson. “The facility also has silent overhead fans that will be operating to further enhance ventilation. Basically, we’ve turned the indoors into the outdoors.” Thompson reports that all members of the cast and crew have been vaccinated, and temperatures will be taken at the box office before performances. As per CDC guidelines, non-vaccinated patrons must wear masks and observe social distancing. “We are excited to finally get onstage in front of a live audience,” said NDCT Artistic Director DiDi Olney. “Online shows
and Zoom rehearsals were good for stage work during the pandemic, but there’s nothing like performing in front of a live audience.” Thompson agrees. “The audience is the last part of the theater experience,” he said. “The audience responds to the players, and they in turn respond to the audience. It’s the beauty of live theater.” Breaking Legs tells the story of college professor Terence O’Keefe, a somewhat successful playwright who is seeking funding to produce his new play in New York. He visits the family of a former student, and finds they are quite interested in the idea. Complications arise when the family turns out to be minor Mafia godfathers who’ll back the play, provided they never have to read it. But that doesn’t mean they won’t want to make some changes. Making Terry’s life more complicated is the fact that the former student is the lusty, unmarried daughter of the house who makes no secret of her attraction to him. And Terry’s play? It’s about a murder. Breaking Legs ran over a year at the largest off-Broadway theatre in New York, garnering reviews like “a silly symphony of laughs” and “a crowd pleaser that is what comedies on Broadway used to be like.” Breaking Legs runs thru June 12, FSa 7pm, Long Beach Community Center, St. Leonard, $15 w/discounts, RSVP: www.ndctheater.org.
Terence O’Keefe (Justin McCright, third from left) has a hard time keeping minor godfathers Mike Francisco (David M. Thomas), Lou Graziano (Sid Curl) and Tino De Felice (William Righter) on the subject of his play in a scene from New Direction Community Theater’s production of Breaking Legs. 8 • BAY WEEKLY • June 10 - June 17, 2021

WHY YOU’LL WANT TO GO
WEEKENDS H ON THE
WATER
First up is South County’s own Deale. Let’s set our course for Herring Bay, a paradise for angling and relaxing, in the first of CBM Bay Weekly’s Weekends on the Water.
erring Bay looks on the map like a giant thumbprint pressed into the western shore of the Bay between the West and Patuxent rivers. With its fertile land and easy access to rich fishing grounds, Herring Bay has been attractive from the earliest colonial days. You won’t find many traces of those days left. But once there was a town of Herrington, and during the War of 1812, there was a fortification on Town Point at the mouth of Rockhold Creek on the north end of Herring Bay. Here, a determined American lieutenant fired a lone cannon at a large party of British marines heading for shore. The cannon fire did no harm, but it did annoy the soldiers, who immediately swarmed ashore. The desperate lieutenant lit
Herrington Harbor North.
Hidden Harbor’s Anchored Inn. off another round, but the cannon slid off its mount and onto his foot. As his four fellow soldiers fled the scene, the unfortunate lieutenant hobbled painfully along behind them. The British set fire to a tobacco barn and left. The lieutenant was fine. And that is the story of Herring Bay’s part in the War of 1812. That section of Rockhold Creek is now home to Herrington Harbour North, one-half of one of the largest and most luxurious marinas on the Bay and home to the Bay’s largest collection of skilled marine contractors. Herrington North even has its own West Marine. The other half of Herrington Harbour, by the way, is located at the bottom end of Herring Bay. Today, Rockhold Creek is lined with
marinas, large and small, fancy and downhome, along with a couple of very popular dock bars and a large fleet of charter fishing boats, many of which cleverly make their home at those very popular dock bars. So why are we sure you’ll want to spend time in Deale? Because you can fish some of the Bay’s best waters, either on your own boat or with one of the charters. You can spend the weekend relaxing on a staycation at one of Herring Bay’s marinas, The Inn at Herrington Harbour (South) or Hidden Harbor’s Anchored Inn, and sampling seafood. Or as Shipwright Harbor’s Jed Dickman modestly puts it, “It’s a wonderful, ideally located spot, where you can find everything you could possibly want.”
Conveniently Located, Full Service Marina Near The ChesapeAke Bay
Hidden Harbour Marina is a family-owned and operated marina located on Rockhold Creek and Route 256 in Deale, Maryland. We’re minutes away from the Chesapeake and within walking distance of tennis courts, restaurants, shops, and a public library. You’ll also be able to access many of these locations by water.

WEEKENDS ON THE
WATER Starting smack in the middle of the Bay means easy jaunts by boat to Eastern Bay and St. Michaels as well as the Choptank River and Oxford or Cambridge. And of course, all those lovely fishing grounds are right here. With Annapolis about 15 miles north and Solomons about 30 miles south, Herring Bay is a convenient destination as well as a central starting point.
WHAT TO EXPECT
N
ow, let’s get the lay of the land. We’ll start at the south end of Herring Bay, which is occupied by Herrington Harbour South, tucked neatly within its own basin. If Herrington North is all about mixing work and play, then Herrington South is all about play. It has its own special restaurant (more about this later), its own hotel, swimming pool, and beach. And of course, its own marina and fuel dock. It’s a whole resort in one neat package. This is the
kind of place where people come to get married. On the north end of Herring Bay— about two and a half miles away—the action centers on Rockhold Creek. Here, as we mentioned earlier, lies Herrington Harbour North (logically), as well as a fistful of other marinas, like Shipwright, Paradise, Rockhold Creek and others that we’ll get to as we go along. Here, too, are those popular dock bars and, beyond the first bridge, a couple more marinas for smaller boats and the town of Deale. During the boating season, a water taxi neatly connects the two ends.
IF YOU ARE COMING BY BOAT
Once you get to Herring Bay, the most important thing to know if you have a draft more than three or four feet is that there is a long finger of shoal water that extends from the north end of the bay nearly two miles south or within a half-mile of the south end. Yes, there are ways to cross it, but if you don’t know the waters, you are better off playing it safe by following the markers. If you are heading to Herrington South, it doesn’t matter, of course. Nor is it an inconvenience if you are coming up from the south. If you are coming from the north and are aiming for one of the north-end marinas, come down to the red “2” and
then follow the markers north in deep water. The channel entrance into Herrington South’s basin is straightforward and deep, but on the other end, the short section of channel from the Rockhold Creek breakwater to markers “8” and “9” is narrow and can be crowded on weekends and shallow in spots to about five or six feet at dead low tide. At markers “12” and “13”, the channel for Herrington North splits to port while the main channel continues north then northeast to reach all the other marinas and the dock bars. Coming up Rockhold Creek channel, Skipper’s Pier Restaurant and Dock Bar is the first thing you’ll find to starboard. This is quickly followed by Paradise Marina, also to starboard, and then Shipwright Harbor Marina’s extensive docks to port. Family-owned Hansel’s Marina and Sherman’s Marina follow to starboard and then Happy Harbor Restaurant to port. Happy Harbor is the dock bar we mentioned with all those conveniently-located charter boats. Under the Deale Road bridge, which has a vertical clearance of 14 feet, lie Harbour Cove Marina, a popular location for smaller boats with shallower drafts, and finally Hidden Harbour, which is home to the Anchored Inn.
IF YOU ARE BRINGING YOUR BOAT (OR NOT)
We’ll let you Google Map your way off the main highways into Deale. When you get ready to splash your boat, you’ll find the sole area boat ramp at Harbour Cove Marina on Rockhold Creek. The Anchored Inn is conveniently nearby. The trip out of the creek and onto the Bay is quick and easy. If you are bringing a canoe or kayak, you’ll find a number of places to launch, including the beach at Herrington South and other soft-launch locations at most of the marinas on Rockhold Creek. From there, you can explore Herring Bay and Rockhold Creek, which meanders peacefully above the Deale Road Bridge for about two miles. You can also explore adjacent Tracy’s Creek above the S.R. 256 Bridge north of Herrington Harbour North for about a mile.
WHERE TO STAY MARINAS

f you are looking for an all-inclusive family get-away-from-it-all weekend, you may want to head directly for Herrington Harbour South. Here, you’ll have easy access to the Bay from the comfort of its entirely protected boat basin. There is an excellent restaurant

o you want to relax and get away from it all? Then Herring Bay is a terrific choice. Do you want to get out on the water, either in your own boat or
as part of a fishing charter? You could hardly make a better choice. Fishing, sailing, and exploring the backwaters by paddlecraft: it’s all here. If you don’t have a paddlecraft, you can rent one from Chesapeake Paddle Sports next to Paradise Marina. If you just want a tour of the local creeks, call Twin Creeks Taxi and Capt. It doesn’t matter whether you choose the north or south end of the bay, because you won’t be separated from the other end. Simply call or hop aboard Capt. Z’s water “Tax-Z” (443-995-9957), which generally runs Friday and Saturday during the boating season. Take a shopping trip to the many antique and consignment stores in Deale to hunt for treasure of a different sort. Cap it off with lunch, which brings us to…
WHERE TO EAT
L
et’s start with the first of Deale’s iconic Chesapeake dock bars, Skipper’s Pier Restaurant & Dock Bar. Just inside Rockhold Creek, owners Dave and Jessica Rosage have combined their training in business management and culinary arts to set Skipper’s apart from your average dock-and-dine facility. You can get here on your own boat, on your dinghy, paddlecraft, or by water taxi. Oh, yes, and by car.
South County Café.
Deale’s second of four dock bars is the famous Happy Harbor waterfront restaurant, which has been serving local watermen, residents and visitors since 1933. Wow! You can get everything to eat here from fried pickles and steamed clams to a cheeseburger and catfish dinner. All the while, you can enjoy the congenial company and watch the charter boats come and go. The third and fourth? Dockside Restaurant and Bar at Herrington North and the Boathouse at Hidden Harbour. And there’s more! Whether you stay at Herrington Harbour South or not, you’ll want to go for dinner at Ketch 22 restaurant. Here owners Bobby and Julie Jones oversee an inspired menu of regional food. Bobby is also co-owner of the wildly successful The Point Crab House and Grill on Mill Creek in Arnold. The menu at Ketch 22 includes

WEEKENDS ON THE
WATER
My Fancy Finds. crab gazpacho, braised pork and cabbage, and ricotta pie and berries. When you’ve had enough water views and go wandering the shops in town, South County Café is a perfect lunch stop. While the names and places here may not be new to you, we can all use some inspiration to answer the age-old question: What should we do this weekend? So cast off the lines (or buckle your seatbelt) and spend a weekend on the water in Deale. Editor’s note: Chesapeake Bay Magazine cruising editor Jody Argo Schroath knows all the best spots from Havre de Grace to Cape Charles, and she’s hard at work putting together even more tempting Bay destinations. Look for CBM’s special edition Weekends on the Water, covering the whole Chesapeake, out in early August. And keep reading Bay Weekly for adventures in our neck of the Bay all summer long.

NEWS OF THE WEIRD
BY THE EDITORS AT ANDREWS MCMEEL SYNDICATION Can’t Possibly Be True
What is art? For Italian artist Salvatore Garau, it’s ... nothing. The 67-yearold sculptor recently sold his “immaterial” sculpture, “I am,” for $18,300, Newsweek reported on June 1. The buyer got a certificate of ownership. Garau says his work is a “vacuum.” “The vacuum is nothing more than a space full of energy, and even if we empty it and there is nothing left, according to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, that ‘nothing’ has a weight,” Garau explained. The artist demands that the work be displayed in a private home free of any obstruction, in a 5-by-5-foot area, but he has no requirements for lighting or climate control.
People With Issues
William Amos, 46, a member of the Canadian House of Commons, can’t seem to get a handle on the technology he uses for virtual meetings. In April, Amos appeared completely naked on camera during a House of Commons proceeding, explaining later that he was changing in his office after going for a run and was sure that he had disabled his camera. On May 26, Amos had to apologize again—this time for urinating “without realizing I was on camera.” “I am deeply embarrassed by my actions and the distress they may have caused anybody who witnessed them,” he wrote on Twitter, according to the National Post. His statement also said he would “seek assistance,” although it was unclear what type of assistance that would be.
Compelling Explanations
• In Palm Beach County (Florida) Circuit Court, Judge Jeffrey Dana Gillen on May 28 rejected a “stand your ground” defense in the animal cruelty case of PJ Nilaja Patterson, 43, who killed an iguana in September, and ordered him to stand trial, The Washington Post reported. Patterson’s lawyer argued that the iguana had “leaned forward with its mouth wide open and showing its sharp teeth,” and that Patterson was bitten on his arm, needing 22 stitches. He believed the iguana could inject poison into him, his lawyers wrote, so he kicked the iguana, and “an altercation between Patterson and the wild beast took place.” However, prosecutors say that Patterson’s actions, caught on surveillance video, showed that he “savagely beat, tormented, tortured and killed” the 3-foot-long lizard in an attack that lasted for 30 minutes, during which the animal suffered a lacerated liver, broken pelvis and internal bleeding. Patterson’s next court date is July 30. • In mid-May, an Indian engineer with the Sardar Sarovar Punarvasvat Agency (SSPA) in Gujarat was asked to explain why he hadn’t been coming in to work, the Deccan Chronicle reported. Rameshchandra Fefar, who is in his late 50s,
replied that as the 10th incarnation of Lord Vishnu, he is very busy doing “penance” and “I can’t do such penance sitting in office. I realized that I am Kalki Avatar when I was in my office in March 2010. Since then, I am having divine powers,” Fefar said. He claims that his ongoing penance is the reason that India has had good rainfall for 19 years.
The Passing Parade
As he gave a campaign speech on June 1, Albuquerque mayoral candidate Manuel Gonzalez found himself distracted by a drone with a sex toy attached to it buzzing near the stage, the Associated Press reported. The owner of the venue grabbed the drone, and its owner, 20-year-old Kaelan Ashby Dreyer, tried to take it back. Dreyer then swung his fist at Gonzalez and called him a “tyrant,” punching Gonzalez’s hands before being removed by deputies. Gonzalez’s campaign said the candidate, currently the Bernalillo County sheriff, was unharmed and “will not be intimidated.”
Inappropriate Behavior
Jerry Detrick, 70, was cited by Greenville, Ohio, police on May 30 for “littering,” The Smoking Gun reported. What he actually was doing was defecating and urinating on his neighbor’s lawn when the homeowner discovered him around 3:15 a.m. Matthew Guyette called 911 after spotting Detrick relieving himself next to a hedge. Detrick, a self-described “Trump man” who lives a couple of blocks away, told police that he targeted Guyette’s home because he and his partner “are Democrats and support Joe Biden.” Reportedly, Detrick had been leaving his mark on the lawn for about 10 years, along with restaurant napkins he used to wipe. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 8.
Low-Tech Solution
During the COVID-19 pandemic, grounded planes were often parked in deserts—ideal conditions for storing them. But aircraft maintenance crews also discovered unwanted guests: snakes. So Australian airline Qantas added one more item to its engineering kit: a “wheel whacker,” also known as a broom handle. Before crews begin their landing gear inspections, they circle the plane, stomping their feet and whacking the wheels to scare off sleepy snakes, said engineering manager Tim Heywood. The “feisty rattlers love to curl up around the warm rubber tires and in the aircraft wheels and brakes,” he said, according to CNN. “We’ve encountered a few rattlesnakes and also some scorpions, but the wheel whacker does its job and they scuttle off.” p

Interestingly, the grape got its name from the tool used to harvest it – the krappon (bent hook) from Proto-Germanic, which led to Old French grapon, (to grab or hook). The grappling hook was later used by navies and armies for hooking onto ships and climbing up strongholds. The grape didn’t get its name as a fruit until the 13th-century, and led to Spanish grapa and Italian grappa for wine. Grapple (to seize, wrestle with) is the word used to describe the frustrating struggle some experience while trying to uncork a bottle.
