At that time the only treatment for ageing would have been a surgical face lift and that would have only be available to the wealthy few. We then moved to Botox and fillers and with an ageing population there is now such a demand for looking good. The law which governs how courts make decisions arising from the breakdown of marriage is now over 40 years old. However, the law does evolve, largely through how it is interpreted by judges. The approach taken by lawyers like myself has also adapted over time. Let me give some examples. Down the years attitudes have changed with regard to spousal maintenance, with courts now far more willing to question how far it is appropriate at all or to limit its duration. With savings and property the starting point is now an equal division (that did not used to be the case) with any move from that position having to be clearly justified e.g by need. Pension sharing has become far more prevalent and relevant. Child maintenance has become a simple(ish) mathematical calculation. The “clean break” has become the desired outcome with people ideally financially decoupled from each other. With children, court orders are now seen as a last resort, the idea of one custodial parent has diminished - joint parental responsibility and joint care arrangements have become the modern way. The court process, both as regards money and children, has moved from an adversarial one to a more conciliatory one with settlement encouraged at every turn.

In the last year alone we have seen the introduction of the Family Court, compulsory mediation information sessions as a pre requisite before pursuing financial and children applications, and new child arrangement orders. Mediation, arbitration, alternative dispute resolution (ADR) are the new buzz words. And yet...legal aid cuts have damaged the access to justice, decision making can be inconsistent, divorce is still focused on blame. There is little support for vulnerable people going through separation, restricted access to alternatives to court, a lack of financial clarity for couples on divorce, and little if any legal protection for people who split up after living together. It begs the question “Is family law fit for the modern family?” Probably not. I am a member of Resolution, representing 6,500 family lawyers and family law professionals who want to see divorce and separation handled in a way which minimises conflict, minimises stress on those involved, and minimises the impact on children. This has led to Resolution launching its Manifesto for Family Law. Next time i’ll tell you what it hopes to achieve. In the meantime? Well, rest assured that I and my colleagues will continue to seek to realise those outcomes for you as best we can under the current law. Mike Hill, Stokesley Family Law

Members of the Stokesley Slimming World group collected 40 bags of clothes they’ve successfully slimmed out of to raise money for Cancer Research UK as part of the national fundraising campaign, the ‘Big Slimming World Clothes Throw’. Karen Allen, who runs the Stokesley group, which meets every Wednesday, encouraged members, their friends and families in Stokesley to collect the clothes, shoes and accessories they no longer need to generate stock for Cancer Research UK shops across the country. Karen says, "This year’s Big Slimming World Clothes Throw event has been a fantastic success and I was overwhelmed by the amount of bags my members managed to collect for Cancer Research UK – they really are amazing! It was a fantastic atmosphere in group and it was so rewarding to raise such a phenomenal amount of stock for such an incredible cause. It’s not just members of the group who have cleared out their wardrobes – we’ve had great support from the whole community. I’m still buzzing from all the donations we’ve had! "Because my members are so sure they’ll never need their ‘big’ clothes again, when I told them about the Big Slimming World Clothes Throw they couldn’t wait to bag them up and donate them to charity. Members of the Stokesley group have lost an amazing amount of weight between them since January this year simply by making small changes to the way they shop, cook and eat and by becoming more active. But the best thing about our group is the caring support members give to each other, spurring each other along and sharing recipes and tips every week. "The Clothes Throw is a perfect opportunity for all of us to celebrate our success, inspire other people and raise money for charity at the same time. There is also a more serious side to our support for Cancer Research UK however: one in two people are diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetime, and

being overweight can increase the chance of developing the disease. It is vital we spread the message that healthy eating, being physically active and losing weight by adopting healthy habits all help reduce the risk of developing cancer." The clothes collected by Slimming World will be donated to Cancer Research UK shops across the country, with each bag raising up to £25 for the charity. Last year slimmers collected close to £1million worth of stock for Cancer Research UK shops around the country and they’re hoping to beat that total this year. All profits go to support the charity’s lifesaving work to help beat cancer sooner. Tove Mctiernan, a member who has lost over 2 stone since joining Stokesley Slimming World says: "It felt so liberating to get rid of all my old clothes and I actually enjoyed bagging them up and saying goodbye – it felt like I was saying goodbye to the old me! I’ve lost 2 stone and now I absolutely love shopping for clothes, something I always avoided before. Thanks to Karen and Slimming World I know I’m never going to see that size again. I feel so much fitter and I’m healthier than ever. It’s great to know that the money raised from my donated items will go towards research to find better ways to treat cancer." 1. Pull the green hulls out of the strawberries. If they are still quite hard, cut them in half or quarters with a table knife. Tip them into a flatbottomed dish. 2.
