Welcome to the Spring edition of Bazaar magazine. Spring can be the busiest season with the lengthening days tempting us back outside into the garden and out and about. This edition is packed with ideas offers and events to put a Spring in our step. Firstly I’d like to congratulate Stokesley Farmers Market recently voted the National Farmers Market of the Year well done to all the stallholders. The success reflects well on the town bringing lots of extra visitors on market day held on the 1st Saturday of the month. Spring also brings the annual Leven Art exhibition in the Town Hall where it’s possible to view and purchase quality art from local artists. With three Bank Holidays coming up make sure you keep this edition handy so you don’t miss any offers and events through the coming Spring months. hat started as a simple idea between some enthusiastic foodie friends is now set to impress for the third year running. The Homegrown Food Festival was conceived over a cup of tea in a Northallerton café back in August 2011. The aim was to create an event that unites the community in celebrating and sampling the great food and drink produced on its doorstep.

The event organisers are a small group of dedicated volunteers who had the faith that a simple idea of showcasing ‘homegrown’ could lead to something that would bring the community together and reach beyond Northallerton. The Homegrown Food Festival is a winner of the Towns Alive, Social and Community Regional Award from Action for Market Towns. The judges really liked the 'Grow Your Own’ element to the Festival and the fact that the festival engaged with schools and the local community in gardening activities both before the event and on the day. The award highlights that in order to start something it takes just a simple idea and a committed group of people. The Judges’ said: “A festival by the community for the community; inclusive, dynamic, flexible, fun and innovative through the breadth of its scope. Delivered to a high standard.” By keeping stallholder fees affordable, the festival provides a platform for new food and drink producers to launch their businesses. Designed to appeal to the widest audience and promote locally grown and produced food, the festival is free of charge to the public and hosts practical gardening workshops, cookery demonstrations from regional celebrity chefs, live music and children’s activities, making it a rewarding and relaxed event for all the family.

The festival organisers are absolutely delighted that TV Celebrity Chef Brian Turner will be making a star appearance, and heading ‘Up North’ to be the headline guest in the Food Theatre, wowing the audience with his cookery demonstration, showing us all how you can cook really good food, in a simple and uncomplicated way at home, using local ingredients wherever possible. It’s all about ‘Grow it, prepare it, cook it and eat it!’ Brian said: “I can’t wait to be part of the Home Grown Food Festival in Northallerton, North Yorkshire. This is where the campaign is as good as it gets, great producers of fab food you grow it and we will cook it! “It’s always great to visit God’s own County!” he added. For the first time this year, the festival will feature a children’s cookery theatre. Children will be able to get stuck in, turning simple ingredients into great food they can make at home and impress family and friends. For a taste of the ‘Good Life’, the Grow Zone inspires visitors to grow their own fruit, vegetables and herbs, no matter how small their garden. There will be demonstrations and advice for budding composters and beekeepers and if all that leaves people hungry, they will be able to whip up a fruit shake on the bicycle powered smoothie machine. The Homegrown Food Festival wouldn’t be a festival without the wonderful food and drink producers from the region. Stallholders will be selling a wide variety of delicious locally produced food, drink and eaton-the-spot street food. They say that there is safety in numbers. That may though be little comfort when it comes to the subject of marriage breakdown. Nonetheless the following may be of interest. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has estimated that around 42 per cent of marriages in this country end in divorce, around 118,000 in 2011 alone.

It’s fair to say that the stigma of divorce has all but disappeared among the older generation. Add to that these baby-boomers having benefited from the rise in house prices, and often having decent pensions, and suddenly you have an apparent recipe for senior marital disaster. However, divorce for the over 60s can also be more traumatic as you are separating from someone you may have been married to for over thirty years rather than the average for a divorcing couple of 11 years.

The good news is that the proportion of marriages failing appears to be falling but some experts have put that down to the financial crash – suggesting people can’t as easily afford to divorce when times are tough. I wonder if the rate will now start to rise again as the financial climate improves. You’d think it would work the other way round! The bad news is that the statistics also reveal a growth, indeed a surge, in divorce among older people, up by three quarters since 1991. It seems the causes are improved life expectancy, changing social attitudes and greater affluence. These “silver splitters” are also suffering from late mid-life crises and the impact of “empty nest syndrome”. Added

At one time it was rare to see clients who were divorcing after more than twenty years of marriage or who were much over 50. Now it is increasingly common. The considerations are sometimes different but it is no less a momentous decision. Moreover, the importance of getting the right advice is just the same.
