Int October is probably one of my favorite months of the year. The weather is amazing, the turbulence and anxiety attacks from all the vacations is over (to travel or not to travel - the million-dollar question!), and the last quarter of the year is always pretty exciting work-wise, since that's when we come up with our best ideas, and also when we start to work on our infamous dining guide. This October we bring you all the new happenings around town. But before we get into that, don’t forget to check out the ArabNet Conference! It’ll be taking place in early this month – so head to our website for more details. From exclusive interviews with the highly anticipated H&M X Kenzo collection collaborators, to meeting the founder of the hottest artisanal chocolate shop that is Bridgewater Chocolate, we’ve got you covered. We also had the wonderful opportunity of getting up close and personal with Kuwait’s first female swimmer at the Olympic Games Faye Sultan to find out more about her hobbies and her goals.

We had a food-inspired discussion with KLC’s Mubarak Jaffar – sadly we weren’t able to trick him into divulging the infamous Chubby Ball recipe. Later we sat with the founder and head web developer of BAWES (Built Awesome) to find out how his creations can help make people’s lives easier. Our truth or dare this month had us awing at puppies as serial volunteer Naser Al-Mutawa told us all about his passion for rescuing animals.

With fall quickly approaching, freshly baked goods make their way to the top of our list, and Nestle Toll House Café has got us covered! Baked daily, their supplies of cookies and desserts make us want to cozy up under a blanket. As far as good food goes, Gourmania presents us with a delicious new partnership – Sweet Sour. Not only are their desserts on point, but their savory dishes are fantastically executed.

We also got the opportunity to test-drive the Porsche Cayenne for a weekend, and oh, how its engine purred on our serene drive to the chalet. Our sense of adventure didn’t stop there, as our meeting with team Rahhalah left us feeling truly inspired—check out our special feature with this adventure travel company’s founders and brace yourselves for a loaded dose of wanderlust.

HELPING HANDS
Meeting volunteer Naser Al-Mutawa By bazaar staff
“Volunteering is important because it helps you discover what you care about – and you know it's from the heart because you aren't getting money out of it,” Naser Al-Mutawa says over a cup of coffee, taking time out of his full schedule to chat with us. On top of being a local university student and working for his dad’s company, he spends his time volunteering with PAWs, one of Kuwait’s local animalsaving nonprofit organizations. “I’ve always loved animals. When I was a kid, I would go to my grandmother’s house and see the older members of my family feeding the street cats, so I guess the compassion for animals stemmed from my childhood.” But volunteering with animals isn’t always as pleasant. “What you see when volunteering is definitely the most challenging part, but you have to accept the situations for what they are and take action.” One of the more common situations is the mistreatment and trafficking of animals in the Friday Market. Animals are crammed into small cages, while dead birds are left on the ground, and dogs are tied to trees, abandoned by former owners. Volunteers weekly frequent the Friday market, and have been optimistic that their presence and attention to the animals have been improving conditions. And slowly but surely, Naser, along with other volunteers, have noticed differences being made in the atmosphere of the Friday Market. The area is a little cleaner, and cats and dogs are being kept away from the sun. But it could be better. “The next step is regulation, keeping tabs on what animals go where and to whom.” Naser explains. This way, when people buy animals from the Friday market, it won’t be a hitor-miss situation where said purchased animal won’t end up abused or abandoned. Naser also advises peaceful population control would better the situation. "Always neuter/spay your pets! People's pets have babies and they hand them out like presents because they can't keep them. These pets often end up on the street and add to the overpopulation issue.” What can you do if you’re interested in volunteering? Contact an organization. Everyone is a valuable asset, and you can take charge of your own hours – whether you’re doing it once a week or even once a month. If you can’t handle the horrors you may be exposed to, donations are an equally welcomed alternative. All organizations settle their veterinary bills through donations, and donations also leave room for supplies for the animals in need at various shelters. “The most effective way of being involved is word-of-mouth,” says 24
Naser. “This is how we find out which animals are in need, and how we find homes for them.” truth or dare How would your mother describe you in one word? Observant. How would you describe your mother in one word? Tolerant. What is the most ridiculous question you’ve ever been asked? (In the States, because I’m Kuwaiti) “Do you have a Ferrari and exotic animals?” What is the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done? Buying a three-day ticket to Coachella before even asking if anyone wanted to go with me. Music comes first I suppose. What is your theme song? Prince – “Let’s Go Crazy.” What word in the English or Arabic language do you wish you had invented? Balalee6. Where would you like to live? What is your dream retirement location? I’ve always loved the fast-paced lifestyle of NYC. As for retirement, my mind is just blank when I think about it. What is the first famous quote that comes to your mind? "If you are lonely when you're alone, you are in bad company"—Jean-Paul Sartre. What animal best describes the kind of partner you’d be interested in?
An owl. I’m not a morning person and neither are they. What do you miss about your childhood? I miss going to the toy store with my Eid money and feeling an adrenaline rush as soon as I walk in the store. If you could change your name, what would you change it to? Kanye, definitely Kanye. How would you describe your handshake in one word? Inviting. What is the toughest part of your character? I love a routine, but also reach a point where I need to switch it up. Who is your favorite historical figure? Nelson Mandela. What in the world do you least desire? Ignorance, or being too comfortable. What do you think is lacking in the world, which if there was more of would make the world a better place? If someone is doing good, just let them do it. Why do you think most girls/guys like you? I’m easygoing I guess. If you mess up my order at Hardee’s, I’ll eat whatever you ordered for me anyway. Finish this sentence: “Happiness is a thing called…?” Self awareness and self acceptance.
Interested in volunteering, donating or spreading the word? Here are some organizations you can check out on Instagram: @paws_kuwait @kareq8 @q8help.

SPREADING BREAST CANCER AWARENESS THROUGH MUSIC IN SAUDI ARABIA By Frida Josch
Beautiful lyrics, Arabic poetry, multicultural melodies and tunes, a female singer, and a breast cancer awareness campaign – things that we typically associate with Saudi Arabia? Perhaps not, but that is what TamTam presents to the world. On Dec. 12, 2015, Princess Nourah University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was the venue of a special event: 10KSA. Initiated by Princess Reema to inspire greater female awareness of preventative diseases in the Kingdom, the event brought together over 10,000 women to discuss breast cancer and to create the largest human pink ribbon ever recorded. Among those performing and, of course, advocating for a change in the debate on breast cancer, was TamTam. Born and raised in Saudi Arabia and now residing in Los Angeles, TamTam is known for her beautiful voice, but perhaps most of all for the strong political messages of her songs. And in her latest song, “We’ve Got Wings,” she raises the 26
awareness about breast cancer, an issue which was previously considered taboo in Saudi Arabia. This issue is particularly close to her heart. “My biggest inspiration for the song was my aunt who is a breast cancer survivor. It is amazing to see how strong she became fighting the disease; even though to the world, she may have looked weak, but on the inside she was stronger than ever. Thinking about my aunt and knowing what she went through is what really helped me write the song.” And the campaign left an important imprint on her. “At first, I was inspired by the campaign itself; seeing all of these Saudi women come together to inform and encourage one another to become more aware of their bodies is so important, especially for women in the Middle East. I also have to say that the fact that this was happening in my country made me so proud!” And more broadly, she wants the song to be an inspiration for anyone going through a rough patch in their lives.
The truth is that TamTam is much more than just a proponent of women’s and civil rights – she is quickly becoming an icon amongst female singers from across the Middle East. She reflects, “a lot of the messages in my music has to do with not giving up and always following through with our goals and dreams, no matter how far-fetched they may seem to us; this is because being a woman from Saudi Arabia who is pursuing music as a career is something that many people from more conservative backgrounds in my country would not approve of.” TamTam hopes that her music encourages everyone, especially young women around the world, to pursue their dreams, and to not let other people’s opinions stand in their way. TamTam is a huge inspiration for aspiring musicians across the Middle East. And her political statements are showing the world a new side of Saudi Arabia – that of a strong, young, female population, who are not afraid to speak up and use their talents and passions to make their voices heard.

MEETING THE CONCRETE MAN Faisal AlGhoul, AKA: The Concretist By bazaar staff
It seems, these days, you can’t walk into any space without finding a concrete piece that grabs your attention. They glitter living, working, and even retail spaces; there’s nothing like the fresh yet cosmopolitan look of concrete pieces adorning tables, windows, or even floors to give a natural and earthy vibe. Locally, this trend could be credited to concrete crafter extraordinaire, better known as “the Concretist”, Faisal AlGhoul. About one year ago, Faisal had a vision that accidentally came to him in the form of a cement mixture. Though he insists he didn’t have an artistic bone in his body before playing around with the element, his wife Dima Saymeh believes the contrary, claiming that her husband has a “quiet artistic side,” and the way he turns concrete mixtures into works of art proves her theory! It all started with a construction site nearby the couple’s home, where Faisal found himself transfixed with an open bag of cement. He took some home, and decided to experiment with it, and created a variety of designs, one of which resembled a candleholder. "After that, I created pots and coasters, and graduated to planters and a cigar ashtray. This was the piece I was most proud of." Faisal reminisces. "I only started this out of curiosity, and it escalated to making things for our home.” But because Faisal was producing so many beautiful pieces, close friends and family members took notice, and he began to expand his craft as homemade personalized gifts for their loved ones. “With their growing popularity, and with a lot of encouragement from friends and family, I then decided to test the local market.” Though Concretist had lots of initial support and encouragement, joining the local market wasn’t an overnight occurrence. “It took me a long time to perfect the mixture. The way cement is cured determines the outcome of the final product, and I wanted something that would always look polished.” Faisal succeeded with that perfect mixture, resulting in beautifully crafted, smooth, and original concrete pieces, but insists there is always room for improvement. “The nice thing about concrete,” he adds, “is that it becomes more beautiful with time, and using the right mixture definitely contributes to that beauty.” After Concretist’s public debut from Instagram to Qout Market last year, the demand for Faisal’s cement creations had only increased. “People are 28
always putting in orders, and most of the time, they’re very understanding of the fact that it takes time. It isn’t like baking a cake!” he laughs. But luckily, those who are pressed for time and are looking to gift somebody with a piece from the collection, have the option of inquiring about stock items. “I end up producing a lot of the more popular items in bulk, so we do have a stock of ready-to-go items.” Alongside Dima, who runs his PR and branding, Faisal is a one-man operation. He mixes, molds, and cures the concrete with his own two hands. She also swears that though Concretist’s merchandise is created in the comfort of their pristine home, messes are limited and Faisal is very mindful when creating. “It gets messy, but we always manage to clean it up!” Concretist is most known for its beautiful planters, which are sold ready-to-display with a prepotted succulent of sorts. “We go for succulents because we’re a bunch of dessert babies and
people want something they can care for easily,” Dima explains, “and something that’s hard to kill!” Faisal laughs. They mostly plant succulents, cacti, and more recently, artful bonsai trees that would add harmony to any home. Concretist has active plans to expand their collection with new items, but we'll have to wait and see what they have in store for us! “I’m just a guy who likes to experiment with concrete.” He says with a smile, as he proudly glances at his most favored creation – the cigar ashtray, made with the very first mixture he ever made. And with that, we know, that this accidental passion has turned into a talent. Decorate your space with timeless concrete! Follow Concretist on Instagram @concretist and contact them at concretistkuwait@gmail.com for more information.
DIVINE HARMONY CREAM S U P R E M E S Y N E R GY YO U T H C A R E
Divine Harmony beautifully combines the regenerative powers of two exceptional age-defying ingredients: Jania Rubens and Immortelle Millésimée. The Divine Harmony Cream transports us to the Island of Beauty with its refreshing, uplifting scent of the clear Mediterranean waters, woven with notes of earth, myrtle, musk and immortelle. The cream’s texture is as soft and fine as the skin. It melts – quite literally – into the skin, which rapidly absorbs its active ingredients. Upon contact, the Jania Rubens extract sinks into the skin, giving a feeling of comfort and hydration. Then the formula evolves. The cream transforms into a soft oil that allows the lipophilic active ingredients to penetrate the skin – particularly the Immortelle Millésimée and myrtle essential oils, as well as camelina, evening primrose and borage oils. It helps to soften expression lines, rebalance facial volumes and boost radiance: the three pillars of facial harmony.

KHALID AL-MUTAWA
‘Built Awesome’ galvanizes Kuwait Startup industry By bazaar staff
Since the young age of 14, Khalid AlMutawa had a knack for development (in the technical sense) and creating things: “I enjoy building and inventing new things using whatever material available for me to use.” Still, at 14, developing was just a hobby Khalid didn’t take too seriously, but was passionate about. Years passed and Khalid found himself freelancing during his second year of university and developing both websites and apps full-time. Khalid’s relationship with technology runs deep – he views it as the medium to which he can rely on to problem-solve. How? He builds and develops products that solve any and all issue that he faces – which in turn, make other peoples’ lives easier. “If you can imagine it, you can build it,” Khalid started. “You can think of mastering technology akin to earning super powers,” he laughed, “it enables you to do something that nobody else can do!” Because technology has no physical limitation, Khalid enjoys using technology to solve problems: “Problem-solving is a nice thing to do!” Having spent most of his undergrad building and developing projects for companies, Khalid decided to set up his own company – Built Awesome (BAWES). To start, BAWES was a development firm and creative agency that creates solutions and projects for companies. But 30
due to a lack of funds, Khalid decided to go ahead and create their very first tech startup – StudentHub: An online recruitment platform for both students and fresh graduates looking for jobs! Watching their project succeed, BAWES decided to stop seeking out clients to serve and just keep doing what they’re doing! “Consequently, BAWES shifted into a company which builds successful tech startups inhouse,” Khalid added, “and now, we no longer accept clients, only partners.” Now, with four in-house tech startups launched, we at bazaar just had to know more about BAWES. So we sat with Khalid to learn more about their incredible solutions to all our technology qualms. Why the name – Built Awesome? I was facing difficulties naming the company when I first started, so I asked my friend Latifa AlMusallam for advice. When she asked me what the company does, my response was, “We build awesome stuff.” That’s when she recommended the name BAWES (Built Awesome). I couldn’t say no to that since it’s exactly what we do. Can you explain the different tech startups you have under BAWES? In the last two years we’ve built a good number of tech startups, however we haven’t launched all of them yet. The four we’ve launched are: •StudentHub.co - Recruitment platform for students and fresh graduates. •plugn.io – an Instagram comment management system for teams. •TheWhiteBook.com.kw – an event planning platform. •XyStudio.co – for online design services.
How did Plugn start exactly? What was the market gap you saw? After launching StudentHub, we’ve had thousands of customers ask us questions on a daily basis. We needed a way to keep track of all the requests coming to us via email, phone, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. to ensure we offer the best when it comes to customer service. While there are plenty of customer service tools that assist you in that, we settled on using Zendesk. However, there was no tool that assisted us when it came to Instagram. We tried linking Instagram with it and even spoke to the Zendesk team. We even considered alternative platforms, nobody presented me with a solution. So seeing a problem and wanting to solve it, I went ahead and built Plugn. Who is it useful for? Plugn.io is good for anyone with an Instagram account that receives more comments than they could individually handle, and wants to keep track of all comments and respond to them. It’s also good for social media companies that manage multiple accounts. What’s next for you and BAWES? When it comes to tech startups, the best approach is to remain focused. So for now, we will focus on our current projects until we have the resources to start something new.
You can email BAWES at contact@bawes.net for more information or visit www.bawes.net. For Plugn, visit www.plugn.io to start using it!

FAYE SULTAN
Kuwait’s Olympic swimmer By bazaar staff
“A lot of people think I'm not Kuwaiti,” Faye laughed, “but I am! Born and raised baby!” To Kuwaiti Olympic swimmer and recent Williams College alumnus Faye Sultan, this is the most common, and amusing, misconception that she faces.

Faye Sultan with her Williams College Head Swim Coach Steven Kuster
Born into an athletic family, it wasn’t long until Faye developed a passion for sports. Growing up watching her brother dedicate himself to tennis, Faye grew inspired to pursue her own athletic path. Still, for Faye, her most notable family member is her mother. Faye began her swim career at the Yarmouk Club with help, support and guidance from her mother. “There was no girls swimming team for me to join – so I’d say my mother played a large role in encouraging me,” Faye elaborated. From superbly humble beginnings to competing at the Olympics, she worked twice as hard to get this far. An athlete since her childhood, Faye found herself practicing several sports until she settled on ballet and swimming. It didn’t take long for her love for swimming to take over – “I decided I needed to choose one, and I chose swimming,” Faye explained, “there’s more room for me to develop there – and my family hated sitting through my dance recitals.” Having taken part in swim meets since she was merely eight years old, today Faye has 13 years of competitive swimming and two Olympic Games under her belt. Being Kuwait’s first female Olympic swimmer – and the first in her set at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games – Faye finds herself jealous of the other countries’ relays. “I wish there were more of us!” Faye exclaims, “It would be amazing to be part of a Kuwaiti relay someday.” With all the controversy surrounding the Olympic Games, we had to get her thoughts on competing independently: “I believe the moment I really felt the impact was when Fehaid AlDehani won the gold medal, they weren’t allowed to raise Kuwait's flag! That moment brought me to tears. There is so much pride in representing your country, and that was taken away from us.” Nonetheless, Faye remains hopeful for the future and isn’t going to be giving up any time soon! Long since her days at the Yarmouk Club pool, Faye officially started training rigorously with Elite Swim Team Kuwait. “We had practice before school and then again after school,” Faye smiled. Honing her skills further, Faye went on to compete in different countries until she graduated school and went on to university. But it wasn’t an easy feat: “A lot of the challenges we faced in Kuwait came from gaining access to pools. Sometimes we weren’t allowed to swim at certain pools and other times people would forget to let us in! Then there were times where the pools had to be shut down for hygienic purposes.” Through it all, Faye persevered and worked toward her goal – to compete professionally. And in the summer of 2012, Faye found herself in London preparing to compete as the first female Kuwaiti Olympic swimmer. After making her country, family and self proud, Faye joined her college swimteam and started competing for them where she currently continues her training. [Continued...] 33
Being a fulltime student and an Olympic athlete comes with its own set of caveats. Attempting to balance athletics and academics can be tricky due to the rigorous and sporadic training hours, plus attending classes and studying for exams. “All athletes face [this] challenge,” Faye continued, “especially at a collegiate level. There are a lot of challenges in every sport, but that’s what makes it worthwhile!” With this 34
balance in mind, one of Faye’s role models is 19 year-old five-time Olympic gold medalist, competitive swimmer Katie Ledecky. Faye also looks up to Michael Phelps and all “the Arab swimmers out there!” And as far as her plans for the future go: “I want to play a more active role in women's sports in the region. There is so much talent here.” When Faye isn’t swimming, she seeks solace
in one of her many hobbies. “I enjoy dancing, cycling or lifting [weights],” Faye started. “But outside athletics, I love food! I enjoy baking and eating,” she laughed, “I [also] like to read, tan and then eat some more.” As our time came to an end, Faye had a message she wanted to pass on to everyone out there wishing to pursue a dream: “Don’t let anyone dictate what you’re capable of.” And as the age-old adage states, the sky’s the limit! A VERSATILE TALENT By Nejoud Al-Yagout
There exists a rare breed of human whose talent exceeds not only societal expectations but even that of the self. Jassim Alnashmi is one of these diamonds in a mine. He is not just a talented poet in his own right, but a curator, architect, artist and furniture designer. After graduating from Iowa State University, he came back to Kuwait and exploded into the cultural scene. Here, I get to ask this master of creativity a few questions about his work. Jassim, you are an as yet unpublished poet and compiled a chapbook at Iowa State University – which has one of the most competitive writing programs globally. Are you planning on publishing it one day? First of all, I'd like to express how grateful I am to have met you, an inspiring poet. You are as involved as I am and certainly more so in your support for local talent. It is the University of Iowa that has international acclaim for their poetry program and - unfortunately - I only became immersed in poetry during my last year at university; otherwise, I would have done one or two of U of I's summer workshops. Iowa State also had a high standard for poetry, and I almost joined the Masters program; but I've built so much momentum for an architecture career that I didn't want to impede. So I embarked on writing in my own time, which with a few more good poems and pointers from a great poet like yourself - I will gladly publish! You once mentioned that what connects all your work is light and the city. Can you elaborate further? Light gives life to everything and the city is an ecosystem for human beings. Studying architecture made me more conscious of the infrastructure of cities I visited - as well as the importance of light in shaping human habitats. I became interested in light in all its dimensions, from experimenting with film photography to the design of cities. Louis Kahn is considerably one of the greatest architects of all time and he gave a lecture titled Silence and Light - which was then published. The talk is so straightforward you would think it was a project briefing. At the same time, the content was describing light as the most alive element in nature, one with character and spirituality. He describes the different types of light such as green light and silver light and how one can shape light to shape someone's mood. His rhetoric is so strong I felt compelled to believe that light is the most important material an architect must work with. At around the same time, I bought 38
my first film camera which is still with me today. Film makes you more aware of light and, with my camera, several mistakes happened because of light leaks. The results in the photographs had a similar atmosphere to that of a beautiful mosque or church or any other great space. So it became clear to me that light is the medium I am to channel all my thoughts through. So, on the one hand light is a speculative and phenomenological criteria for me, on the other hand is a more data-based thought process which is the structure of cities. I would say these two elements are necessarily balancing each other out, like Immanuel Kant's theory of the Beautiful and the Sublime, or chaos and order. As an architect, I must be aware of issues such as what influences crime in the city or what allows for positive cultural exchange, so that I am able to design correctly. I believe every architect should have a mindset of how to holistically improve society. People forget that art is not merely an expression of the self, but is for the benefit of
social evolution and consciousness. This was exemplified when you participated in Artists for K’S PATH at the Boushahri Gallery. In an age of 'look-at-me', how can we encourage artists to give back to the community and support causes dear to us? Actions speak louder than words. Whether it be through art, education or being involved in private or public enterprises that work to better the community, change happens when people from different walks of life and different roles in the community have the same vision. Artists can ignite change but it needs everyone else to realize it. If it doesn't happen naturally from the artists, then it must happen with politicians, community organizations or through educating the younger generation. What’s Your Location? is a show that you curated along with Antonio Da Silva and Ruth Jones. What was its significance? And do you find curating more challenging than participating as an artist? Curating is very tough, especially with a large number of international artists. As an artist, [Continued...]

As well as all the other artworks, an exhibition with good art can fall apart if it's not curated well. I wouldn't say being an artist is easier; it isn't. I just hadn't expected curating to be so challenging. What's Your Location? is an exhibition that discusses the issues of globalization, which is due to excelling improvements in transportation and technology. It is causing an immense cultural exchange which is mainly infamous for diluting culture rather than enriching it. The exhibition is boarding the train of cultural enrichment and exposing this as much as possible. It started in Porto Alegre, Antonio Da Silva's hometown, then came to Kuwait, where Antonio and I are living. Now, it is set to go to London where Ruth lives. In each location we are including a full cultural program of lectures and workshops 40
to engage in an even deeper dialogue with the community. Finally, many people struggle to find their calling. However, you have managed to manifest more than one, so you are in a justifiable position to provide us with nuggets of wisdom. Tell us, what drives you and how can you encourage others to take the plunge and allow their passion/s to be manifested? I have been faced with a very important decision to make - which is to be the jack of all trades or the master of one. I have not made that decision yet. After being in Kuwait and exercising all parts of my brain, it became quite exhausting. I am more keen to believe that it is better to be a master of one; but this is the problem: part of being an architect is to be an octopus, or a chameleon, a man of many faces, which I enjoy. Architecture is the harmonious marriage between science and art, so I feel I am contributing to my role as an architect by producing artwork like photography or poetry, and furniture design is architecture at the scale
of a person. These are reasons why I have not settled with only one thing as of yet. Also, my art is a form of research that develops theories for my architecture and design projects. So to find my calling, I’ve set a goal for myself to delve into each field of my interests and see which one or two are still standing after a year or so, which I think everyone should do, how else would you know if you should spend the rest of your life doing this or that?

MEET GAZA'S 12-YEAR OLD IT WHIZ MOHAMMAD ALHAULIMY By Eman Hussein
Despite the restrictions, Gaza continues to surprise the world with its brilliant talents. Mohammad Alhaulimy, an IT whiz, is yet another young Palestinian with great potential. In the playground, Mohammad might seem like an ordinary kid, but behind his computer screen he is anything but ordinary. AT 7, HE FELL IN LOVE WITH PROGRAMMING Mohammad’s interest in programming became obvious at the very early age of 7. He was curious to know how the games that he played on the computer were made. Noticing his interest, his parents made sure to sign him up for the International Computer Driving License course. Completing the course with success, he became the youngest Palestinian to secure this global computer skills certificate. From there, and with the continuous encouragement of his parents, Mohammad started a long journey of IT learning. He took courses in programming, design, 42
hacking, robot programming and making apps. By the time he was 9 years old, he had already created his first mobile application to raise awareness about issues like pollution and wars. In 2014, Mohammad and a group of his friends, who called themselves “Progamers,” participated in the renowned Microsoft Imagine Cup with a game called “The World Savers” and they managed to reach the finals. INVITATIONS TO INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES & COMPETITIONS BEGIN Mohammad’s outstanding talent has attracted many and it wasn’t long before he started receiving invitations to participate in international conferences and competitions. In 2015, he was invited to participate in the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Unfortunately, he couldn’t make it because of Israeli and Egyptian-imposed restrictions on traveling to and from Gaza. When Electronic Intifada asked Mohammad about how he felt about the fact that he had to miss many international competitions, he said that “sometimes, you just have to live with being
a Palestinian. I’ve been denied the right to travel many times. Recently, I missed a robot and artificial intelligence competition in Jordan.” STEVE JOBS IS HIS ROLE MODEL Mohammad is passionate about technology and he dedicates his time to continuously polish up his skills. His love for coding has even pushed him further to learn more languages so that he can make use of the available content on the internet in different languages. So far, the 12-year old IT whiz has learned English and Hebrew. Mohammad says that his role model is Steve Jobs, CEO and co-founder of Apple Inc. He told Electronic Intifada about his goal, “My dream is to found a company that might change the world somehow. No Arab is mentioned globally when it come to IT. I want to be the first.”With his determination and the support of his family, Mohammad has a real shot at being the next Arab Steve Jobs.

HOW MUSICAL.LY BECAME A POP CULTURE PHENOMENON By Emily Price
If you have a teenager, have been near a teen lately, or are just young at heart, chances are you've heard of musical.ly. The almost 2-year-old app that encourages users to lipsync to 15-second clips of songs has exploded in popularity, especially among millennials. Every day, users upload more than 10 million videos to the platform, which has held firm in the App Store's top 40 since last summer, right beside the likes of Snapchat and YouTube. But it started out as something very different: an educational app called Cicada. CEO Louis Yang and his partner, Alex Zhu, originally launched Cicada as a way for people to learn new things on their mobile phone. With it, they encouraged users to upload three- to fiveminute videos explaining how to, say, cook a new dish or speak a foreign language. The idea was that if you spent five minutes of your commute each day educating yourself on a topic, after a while, you would become an expert. They built a platform for creating and sharing the videos, but there was just one problem: finding the experts. "We found out that the challenge isn’t really about the tool. The challenge is that there are not too many people who are able to explain knowledge in such a short period of time," Yang says. "The five minutes was very challenging for most people." Faced with a potential failure and running out of cash, Yang and Zhu started brainstorming how they could use the platform they had already built. They thought about what they'd learned from the Cicada failure: One, if you're going to build a product that relies on user-generated content, it needs to be lightweight and capable of uploading content in minutes rather than hours; and two, if you want that product to go viral, it needs to be related to pop culture in some way—music, for instance. "We didn't have any money to spend on marketing it or promoting it, so we had to think, What is the best way to create a product, which allows a massive amount of users to create content in an easy way in a short amount of time?" Yang says. "Then we brainstormed and came up with this musical.ly idea." Using what was left of the investment they had secured for Cicada as well as a big part of the technology built for that app, Yang and Zhu launched musical.ly in 2014, first in the United States. They got lucky: It went viral, landing in the App Store's top 40 in less than a year. It hasn't budged since. Musical.ly is now used by over 100 million people around the world, including Europe, Asia, and South America. More than 30% of users post something every single day; some users post 44
more than 10 videos publicly each day, while others choose to share videos privately with their friends. While more than 60% of musical.ly's user base falls between the ages of 13 and 20, people of all ages are now getting hooked. "More and more elderly people are using the app to communicate with family," says Yang. "We see brothers, parents, even grandparents coming in." One of musical.ly's most popular acts is a woman who refers to herself as Gangsta Grandma. She's 87 years young and has over 1.5 million followers who watch her lip-sync and perform comedy routines. Now, lots of people use music on the platform as a soundtrack to their dance and comedy videos. Musical.ly has even secured deals with major labels to feature the work of several big-name artists. Alicia Keys and Wiz Khalifa have accounts on the service, and others, such as Jason DeRulo, have committed to releasing new music videos on musical.ly before posting them elsewhere. According to Yang, the labels are coming to them, not the other way around. "We've gotten a very positive response from the music industry," he says. "Not only labels, but publishers. They are
seeing that musical.ly is a platform that gives them extra benefits for releasing new music and promoting new artists." Yang says that as the app has grown, more and more artists are seeing it as a platform they want to be a part of, one that can help them reach a wider swath of fans. Earlier this summer, musical.ly partnered with Good Morning America on a contest that likely brought the brand to the attention of a whole new audience. So, what's next for musical.ly? Monetizing it. According to Yang, the company has enough cash in the bank to experiment with different ways of making money, while still keeping the user experience positive. Current ideas include running ads in feeds or sponsored content. "User experience is more important, and is prioritized over making money," Yang says. He adds that the company won't do anything that will harm user experience in the name of making a dollar. Currently, there are no plans to sell music within the app, an approach that similar services have tried. "It's really about community," he says. "People are sharing their lives."

RAHHALAH: FOR THE ADVENTUROUS AT HEART The travel, the team, and the incredible journeys By bazaar staff
46
“To me, traveling is the only way to explore. It becomes both an inward and outward journey. You explore the world by connecting to the wild, by experiencing it like the locals do and by letting yourself totally get absorbed by this new place.” –Suzanne Al Houby
[Continued...] 47
There is nothing comparable to the experience of traveling: The exhilarating feeling of discovering a new place, meeting new people, and embarking on adventures you know you’ll never have the opportunity to explore at home while you’re in your routine. If you’re an avid traveler, step outside your comfort zone. There’s a whole world for you to explore that’s beyond the ordinary: lazing around on the beach of a fancy hotel and indulging in food and drink till you feel the need to go on a diet when you’re back home, or, as most popular choices tend to be, frequenting your summer spot in [insert country of choice here] and living like the part-time local you’ve become over the years; comfortable and familiar. The travel routine can be broken! Rahhalah offers an all-inclusive service for everything in between your departure and return flights to ensure that you have the experience of a lifetime, catered specially for you and your travel group. There are two ways to go about a Rahhalah trip: the first being a bespoke trip where you select your destination, duration of stay, activities of choice and type of accommodation (ranging from being a guest in a local’s home, hostels, to 7 star hotels and resorts.) Your other option with a Rahhalah trip is to go with the flow and sign up for your prepackaged adventure of choice! Are you an avid hiker? Then you should experience the trails of historic Jordan, which includes trekking through Petra, Wadi Rum, Wadi Mujib and the Dead Sea. Rahhalah’s trip itineraries are rated at different levels, ranging from easy, moderate to challenging. An easy to moderate level trip, for example, would be a Northern Lights trip, part of the 7 Wonders of Rahhalah packages. A trip like this would include snowshoeing, skiing, trekking, adventures with Huskies and stargazing. Another example of easy level experience would be a Machu Picchu Adventure trip, where you’d only take on activities like cultural sightseeing and nature/bird watching. The opportunities are endless! Something to keep in mind with the Rahhalah trips is that they aren’t designed to be lazy and overly touristic, and after meeting the founders of the group, we can see why. Adventure mavens and co-founders Suzanne Al-Houby and Zed Alrefai, both proudly share titles as the First Arab woman and man to reach the summit of Everest and to climb the seven summits (the highest mountain on each continent). The two decided to join forces and start this adventure travel business in Dubai in 2011, promising the Middle East a new way of looking at travel. “Reaching the top of Everest after 51 days of gruesome climbing in the most dangerous conditions one can imagine is simply a larger than life experience.” Suzanne reflects. “I stood tall and proud and I felt that I have earned it. No words can describe that for those few moments, I was the highest person on earth! At that moment, 48
it was a very personal achievement and it wasn’t about the title or the record. The fact that I opened the way to break certain taboos and to inspire others to dream big is priceless to me!” Suzanne’s achievements leave no mystery behind the fact that she herself likes to accompany Rahhalah travelers on more challenging adventures. Being not only the first Arab woman, but the first Palestinian to achieve this goal gives her a unique value that poses as encouraging, making her the ideal group leader on trips where more strenuous activity will take place. “I do lead many of our trips in different continents. I prefer to go on the challenging and hard core ones as I feel I have a lot of value and experience to make these trips unforgettable.” If you’re the type who craves ‘hardcore’ adventures, along with Suzanne, you’ll likely find Rahhala’s co-partner, consultant and the team’s resident ‘Lucky Charm’ Zed accompanying you. Zed’s travel motto is to fully immerse himself in every country he visits, and is passionate about meeting new people and exploring different music, food, languages and culture during these trips. “Traveling makes you change the way you look at life, people and nature, and makes you appreciate everything you have,” he explains. But to Zed, adventure doesn’t stop there! He’s fully equipped and passionate about trekking as well: “it was my dream to summit mighty Everest, and it still feels like a dream. I felt ecstatic and still feel the shivers every time I think about it.” And after this milestone, trips to Everest Base Camp with Rahhala as well as Kiliminjaro and Machu Picchu have become regular spots for him to frequent with other travelers. Another key person that completes the Rahhala experience is Managing Partner Samer Abu Dagga, who holds down the fort in Rahhalah’s Kuwait City office. Samer’s adventure resume boasts achievements such as reaching the highest peak in Africa (Mount Kilimanjaro), the highest peak in Europe (Mount Elbrus), and trekking to Everest base camp. With his experience and calm and collected demeanor, he too makes an ideal leader to have on Rahhalah’s team – and manages to accompany travelers on most of their trips! “It's important to seek adventure as it takes you out of your comfort zone, connects you to nature and inspires you to challenge yourself.” He states. “Also, people have no idea what they’re capable of. I’ve seen many people who wanted to give up while trekking, but with a little bit of motivation, they manage to push through. Your mind is more powerful than any other part of your body will ever be.” We all know who we’d like to have with us while hiking through the jungles of the Amazon! But don’t worry, Rahaalah isn’t only about extreme adventure, and not all of their guides are pushing you to get to Kilimanjaro or Everest’s base camp. If you’re taking on a more low-key adventure, you might run into mellow Stani Aziz, [...Continued] 49
Rahhalah’s Operations Manager, who has been known to sometimes accompany travelers on their trips, especially those that focus around the serenity that adventure can offer. Trips that have stood out in her book are places like Sri Lanka, Greece, Tanzania and Croatia, all of which are destinations that Rahhalah has itineraries for. “So far I have not climbed a mountain, or been on a very challenging adventure; for now, I consider parasailing as my biggest adventurous activity.” She chuckles sheepishly, “but I think it is important for people to travel adventurously, as it broadens horizons, builds confidence, fosters 50
curiosity, makes you dream, improves your physical health – in a sense, you become a better person!” Perhaps most importantly, the ultimate goal behind a Rahaalah trip is to better one's self, to the point where they have a whole section of journeys dedicated to doing so. Other than beautiful, adventure-filled organized trips and luxury travel itineraries, they offer transformational programs, where groups of people join a retreat that promises to transform their outlook on life. These retreats range from trips to the North: Alaska, the South: Peru, East: Bornea, and West:
Morrocco. Carefully selected by the Rahhalah team, these locations have been chosen in accordance to the teachings of the shamanic Medicine Wheel, where these four directions in a person’s life represent the spiritual, physical, mental and emotional. They are designed to help you discover untrodden tracks and well-hidden treasures along the way, but most importantly, guarantee you to travel on the path of self-discovery, which will unveil answers to lingering questions and truths long forgotten. After venturing on these journeys, you will definitely return rejuvenated with a whole new [Continued...]

Each Rahhalah itinerary offers teamwork and group bonding with communal meals and downtime, and the Rahhalah team vehemently agrees that transformations do occur. “One of the best things about these trips is seeing how people change!” says Suzanne. “They always transform in one way or another.” Rahhalah also joins forces with organizations such as Ali Abdulwahab & Sons and LOYAC, who 52
sponsor youth programs to different Rahhalah destinations. During these trips, teens and young adults alike go on journeys that strengthen their character and broaden their horizons. They meet people, experience the culture as locals by visiting locals and bonding with them, have meals in family homes, and go on quests that really help them understand the area they’re visiting, such as scavenger hunts. So why not try something new? Whether you’re in a rut and are seeking for a new adventure, or if you have a teenager whose life you want to enlighten, or maybe you and your family are tired
of doing the same old drab thing every year come vacation time, Rahhalah is a great alternative way to travel. All you have to do is visit their website, shop around and you’ll be riding rapids, cycling through valleys, walking ancient trails and climbing mountains in no time! Visit Rahhalah’s website at www.rahhalah.com. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram: @rahhalah and check out their YouTube channel: RahhalahExplorers. AMY SCHUMER REVEALS ALL IN NEW AUTOBIOGRAPHY By Andrea Mandell
Amy Schumer went from a stand-up comic with her own zeitgeist-y Comedy Central show, Inside Amy Schumer, to movie star last year, thanks to her autobiographical comedy, Trainwreck. She played a promiscuous magazine writer who falls for her interview subject (Bill Hader). Directed by Judd Apatow, the movie grossed $110 million (KD 35 million) — and suddenly, Schumer was everywhere, including the cover of Vogue. Cue a multimillion-dollar book deal. The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo (Galler y Books) is a funny, highly revealing recollection of memories, relationship rehashes and career experiences. We caught up with the comedian on the Hawaii set of her untitled action-comedy with Goldie Hawn, due May 2017. I enjoyed the notated journal entries you included from your childhood. Do you still keep journals as an adult? No. I stopped when I was like 22 or 23. I don’t know why, I don’t think it was a conscious decision, I just stopped. You told the story of your father who has MS in Trainwreck, but I’ve read little about your relationship with your mother until now. Your reveal how her affair with your childhood best friend’s dad affected you. Did she get to preview the chapter called “Mom”? Oh yeah. Any references to her in the book, I gave them to her and I said if you don’t want me to write about this at all I won’t — I left it up to her. After reading it, the only correction she made was, I’d written that Hebrew was on Saturday and she’s like, “Hebrew School was on Sunday.” And that was it. You learned of the affair when you were 13 and say you spent years being “emotionally suppressed” until you were about to turn 30. Has putting your feelings on paper helped or hurt your relationship with your mother? We love each other and I’m really grateful to her and for her, but we’ll never be how we were. I wrote that family is a constant negotiation so it’s constantly evolving, but we’ll never be close again. You also detail what the road grind is like for a comic. You’re about to go on an international arena tour, which wraps stateside on New Year’s. Does being famous make it harder to find new material? I don’t think so. It’s made dating different. But my experience day-to-day is not that of a famous person. 54
Meanwhile, I feel like people are as into your love life as they are The Bachelor. That is an overstatement and you know that! OK, maybe. But you can’t dispute how viral your love life has gone. You talk about meeting your boyfriend, Ben Hanisch, in the book. Did you have fears about including him? Yeah, for sure. I’m 35, I’ve never been married. My parents have both been married three times, so I no longer believe
in the fair y tale. In my mind it’s so great, whatever, but statistically I can’t shake the facts. I’m a romantic person but I’m a realist. So I’m not like, “We did it! Now we’re going to be together forever! That’s it! That’s all she wrote!” I think there’s a chance we’ll be together for a long time — or not. Sometimes I’m like, “Yeah we’re going to be together!” And sometimes I’m like, “This is doomed.” It’s hour to hour.

PASSION IN INTERIORS
With SECi’s Managing Director, Architect Kamal Elatawy By bazaar staff
Arch. Kamal Elatawy
An architect by trade, local interior design house SEC interiors Managing Director Arch. Kamal Elatawy specializes in architectural, fit-out and interior design. A multitalented design mogul, Kamal has honed his trades by working with teams from around the globe over the last 25 years. His different expertise in architecture and interior design is based on previous work cooperation with international firms in Egypt, GCC, U.S & Japan, which exposed him to different principals and schools of design. Speaking on his experience on working with one of the pioneer American firms specializing in spas and health facilities: “It was great exposure to the Western culture, and its ideas for aesthetics. The notion that most of the spaces are open layouts with clean lines, the non existence of clutter and overcrowding was mesmerizing,” he continued, “For me, stripping the space from unnecessary accessories and objects to enjoy the beauty of its essence, is very different from what we practice in the Middle East, our clients are drawn to bold designs with beautifully selected accessories and artworks, making their project seem like a small museum where every corner possesses a unique identity. It’s what keeps us, as designers, on our toes.” 56
The wonderfully seasoned architect joined SECi when he sought out new challenges. Kamal didn’t have to look far as SEC Interiors was entering the fit-out field. As design and execution are his forte and armed with a capable team, it was only a matter of time until SECi became unstoppable. Structural Engineering Company, as a mother company, had several departments working in different fields. While each complimented the other, interior design and fit-out was taken care of as part of the construction department. So in 2014, Kamal made it his sole mission to push SECi in the market as an independent entity based on existing clients and a solid business plan to include new ones, until it grew into the design and fit-out house it is today. “Our strategy is design and build,” he stated. Saving client’s time, energy and money – SECi can create the dream from design to reality while also involving the client in every step of the way. Utilizing their own materials and resources, SEC Interiors has created a team that provides clients with all their needs – even going beyond a project’s completion. The team handles every project as though it were their own – “It’s like we’re their partners,” he explained, “Our ethos is give them the high quality of service every client deserves and considering every aspect of any project from the initial conversation to a reality – we leave no room for error.” If a client has an idea for materials and design, SECi can advise them toward what would work best for their concept. This way,
SECi saves the client time and money by pointing them in the right direction. Thus providing them with a beautiful design that won’t break down over time due to lack of compatible materials. “We offer every client a consultation to make sure there are no flaws,” Kamal continued, “We’re not doing it for the money, we do it for the integrity of the design.” Constantly ahead of the game, SECi seeks to provide their clients with the latest innovations and best tools available. As a part of this mission, SECi has introduced virtual reality (VR) technology to their clients. “It’s much easier than tearing down a wall after it’s been built!” Kamal laughed. Photographing the space using a camera with 360 degree capturing capabilities, SECi’s team can then implement a complete design in virtual reality for the client to approve. “This way, I don’t have to take the laptop or tons of paper drawings to the client,” he went on, “I can take the VR glasses and provide my clients with a complete view of their concept, like it’s already built!” Always seeking new ideas, Kamal is also working on several other projects to provide the market with the best products and services available. So stay tuned! For more information you can visit their website www.secikw.com or follow them on Facebook and Instagram @SECIKw. SECi can be found in Sharq, Kuwait City, St. 155 Riyadh Center, or call them on 2246 4381 or 6000 2578.

HOW WRITING TO-DO LISTS HELPS YOUR BRAIN (WHETHER OR NOT YOU FINISH THEM) By Art Markman
For a long time, I resisted to-do lists. I wanted the flexibility. I felt that if I kept a list, it would tie me down to a particular set of tasks. Gradually, though, I came around. The busier my work life became, the more crucial it was to have some sort of running agenda on hand. Before long, I even started adding some of those items onto my weekly calendar. In other words, I'd reluctantly become a planner. Looking back, it shouldn't have been so difficult. In fact, there are at least three psychological benefits to the simple act of drawing up a list of top-priority tasks—whether or not you actually accomplish them. WRITING MAKES YOUR MEMORY'S JOB EASIER Keeping a list of tasks you need to perform is like taking notes when you're reading a book or listening to a lecture. When you take notes, you need to filter external information, summarize it in your head, and then write it down. Many studies have shown that note taking helps us distill the information we hear and remember it better than we would if we'd just heard or read it. Your brain decides which pieces of information to hang onto for later, partly as a result of how much work you do to them up front. Writing a to-do list is a similar mental experience. Even if you first spend some time thinking about the tasks you have to do, the act of drawing up a list and prioritizing the items on it forces you to do a little extra work. This matters. Your brain decides which pieces of information to hang onto for later, partly as a result of how much work you do to them up front— so the more you mentally manipulate a piece of information, the better you'll remember it. That's why it's sometimes surprisingly easy to remember what's on your to-do list even when you aren't looking at it. PLANNING TURNS ABSTRACT GOALS INTO CONCRETE WORK For most people, the challenge at work isn't keeping busy hour by hour or day to day, it's making sure we get the big-picture projects done that make work fulfilling. These are often broad, abstract goals that you hope to achieve over a period of weeks or months. The problem, though, is that they're hard to achieve without breaking them into a coherent set of concrete actions you can take on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Suppose you're trying to write a book. You can’t do that without taking the time to do research first, then put in the hours writing, and finally spending 60
time editing what you've written. All that takes time, and keeping an agenda of all the little "sub-goals" that will take you toward the larger, more abstract one can help you actually get you to a finished manuscript you're proud of. As you think through these smaller tasks, other steps will often occur to you—some that you hadn't originally envisioned needing to take when you first set your overarching goal. They weren't obvious until you actually thought about everything it would take to reach it. So even if your agenda changes in practice as you work toward your objective, the process of thinking ahead about the steps involved can help prime you to do the work ahead. IT HELPS YOU CLEAR THE WEEDS YOU COULDN'T SEE To-do lists go unfinished for lots of reasons. Workplaces are distracting and full of unforeseen events. The daily flow of email and team messaging tools regularly threaten to drown out other
activities—and that's not to mention the meetings you're constantly getting pulled into. But once you write down the tasks you need to perform, you then have to clear space in your day to put some of those tasks onto your calendar. This calendar maintenance is itself a useful exercise for fighting the tide of interruptions you're always facing. It pulls your brain out of a reactive mode and forces you to think about the long term. Plan your todo activities a few weeks ahead when your calendar still has some blank spaces in it. Add in time for the tasks that are crucial for achieving those long-term goals. You may also find you don't have enough space in the calendar to make that happen—and that's okay, too. When that happens, it's a good sign that you've been loaded down with other, less-important jobs that are crowding out your most important work. And chances are it was difficult to see that before sitting down to manage your calendar.

KUWAIT LONDON COMPANY
Talking all things food with Mubarak Jaffar By bazaar staff
Here at bazaar, we love us a good story. Especially when the story involves a local business that’s passionate about what they do. Enter Mohammed and Mubarak Jaffar, the masterminds behind the Kuwait London Company (KLC). As a means to venture into several different business and industries, they set up KLC back in 2008 as a General Trading and Contracting Company. In 2009, KLC found its calling in the restaurant business and Mohammed created The Kitchen. A year later, the Jaffar family acquired Talabat and Mohammed helped it grow. With Talabat on KLC’s side, Mubarak saw the full potential in the restaurant delivery business. That steered KLC towards the operation of 4 brands with 12 outlets in total across Kuwait that we all enjoy today. At The Kitchen you’re guaranteed to get the warmth of a home-cooked meal, sans the messy dishes. With Junkyard, KLC brings you the quality street-foods you desire. While Humble Burgers pays tribute to none-other 00
than the mighty classic burger and Proper Sliders is meant to take you back in time, to childhoods spent at fun fairs and on Ferris wheels. Each concept promises to be more delicious than the next! But let’s take a moment to reflect on their humble beginnings – pun absolutely intended. When Mubarak obtained his master’s degree in Management in the MENA Region from SOAS in 2012, he returned to Kuwait and created his first independent project with KLC, Junkyard. “I was always interested in the restaurant business,” Mubarak explained, “However, I didn’t feel I had enough experience in the industry to venture into it right away.” With Mohammed having set up The Kitchen’s two operating outlets, his concerns grew with the concept’s second outlet in The Village and considered shutting it down. “At the time I was against the idea,” Mubarak elaborated, “So I proposed to change the concept into an American Street Food joint.” That is when Junkyard saw the light and took The Kitchen’s place in The Village. With support and guidance from Mohammed, Mubarak’s concept took off, which encouraged him to take KLC even further. From there, Humble Burgers came to follow and Proper Sliders sealed the deal. Each concept provides us with its unique flavor profile and distinctive creations. Big on quality and service,
KLC’s top concern is to provide the public with what they want: “Good quality, reasonably-priced dishes that are delivered hot within 45 minutes to an hour.” Heavily invested and involved in every aspect of the business, Mubarak and KLC’s graphic designer are constantly developing each brand’s identity elements – “It’s definitely an exciting ongoing process,” Mubarak added. We sat with Mubarak to learn more about KLC and our favorite dessert (which is available at all their concepts, by the way) – the Chubby Balls. We have to ask, Chubby Balls – how did these even come to be? What makes them so special? My sister actually came up with our version of this classic dessert dish that features commonly in most childhood memories. She first brought in the Chubby Balls for us to try out during a family gathering and they were an instant hit. We then released the dish in The Kitchen and it soon became a top seller. It’s a simple, yet delicious, biscuit based dessert that never fails to please a crowd. If you had to choose, which is your favorite concept and what’s your go-to dish? My favorite concept is definitely Junkyard and my alltime favorite dish is the B-C-B (Bacon Cheese Burger).

What’s the process for creating an item for the menu? How do you decide which concept it will be introduced to? We are constantly testing new items with our chefs – who are always looking to create something special. It’s quite a complicated, yet fun process and involves a lot of tasting sessions with a number of different team members, family and friends who all contribute to the final product. Each brand is unique and has its own signature dishes yet there are some similarities and some dishes are available across the 4 brands such as Chubby Balls which is our signature dessert. All your concepts are local – what sets you apart from other local concepts? The majority of successful local concepts in Kuwait were dine-in concepts and few really penetrated the delivery market as it was dominated by several big players. We decided to take a different approach when it came to the home-delivery market and offer our valued customers quality, reasonably-priced food conveniently delivered to their door. Why does KLC focus more on delivery concepts? At the time, the market was underserved and we
saw that the delivery market had a lot of potential making it very attractive - given the abundance of dine-in concepts in Kuwait. How does KLC maintain a high standard when it comes to delivery? We use quality packaging that is specially made for food delivery. This helps retain the heat of the products and safeguards our products during the delivery process. We also use heat bags with every delivery for hot items and try to deliver food to areas within a certain proximately from the restaurant to avoid food arriving late to customers. Quality control is very important to KLC – how do you ensure consistency of quality and how can people provide feedback? We love feedback! Getting constructive feedback from customers is essential to our business and we are constantly encouraging people to give us feedback through our different channels: Either by calling us directly, dropping us an email, through social media or our websites. You’ve just launched a catering service – what should people expect? How do they get in touch? Is there a minimum order? Himdillah, we officially launched our catering service
for all of our brands. We used to receive many requests from our customers for events that we were not able to fulfil and it was really a matter of time before we felt we had to launch our catering service. You can either contact the restaurants directly or drop us an email and we’ll book you in for an event. We are currently flexible when it comes to the size of the order and it really depends on availability and the location of the event. Are there any new projects in the works? A new concept? None at the moment. We’re constantly looking to improve on our customer experience by optimizing our delivery service. What’s next for KLC? We’re currently working on developing our call center and integrating it with all our outlets. We’re also always looking at new potential locations and we are seriously considering opening more outlets next year in Kuwait and studying the possibilty of expanding across the GCC - Inshallah.

MOVE OVER ECOMMERCE AND MCOMMERCE, NOW INTRODUCING “MECOMMERCE” By Barry Rodrigues
We have all been fascinated by the evolution of marketing over the last decade. The Internet and all the technologies that are interlinked with it have turned things around in more ways than one. But what has been fascinating is that while the 60s, 70s, 80s and even the 90s were more brand driven business cultures where the brands drove product prices, product features and other details, the new millennium has truly put the customers in the drivers’ seat largely due to collaborative tools like social media. Customers of the 21st century feel closer to brands than ever before and as such are more likely to be heard. So in this age of online selling and social care, customers have developed a cycle in their buying process. A pathway that leaves a trail of proverbial “breadcrumbs” that tell you how they found out about that product, how they used that particular and in some cases if they are likely to buy that product again and become repeat customers. Decoding each customer journey to better understand their behaviors and create a customer map for the future is the key to giving customers a memorable customer experience. Research predicts that by 2020 at least a third of today’s customers will be millennials who will want customized, customer experiences that are intuitive and seamlessly integrate with their lives. So if marketers want to continue selling to them, they will need to keep up and start integrating various facets of the marketing process in a way that is one with their daily lives. Over the last few years, we at Future have tried various techniques to reach out to our customer base. Initially we thought just being on the digital marketing plane was sufficient and we would be able to talk to our customers and appeal to them to buy from us. How wrong we were! It took us a few failed exercises to realize that we needed to address different segments differently. In other words, we used programmatic data to understand the trends, psychology and buying habits of our customers. Once we got around to doing that, we noticed that we got more engagement from our customers on social media and on other related channels. Once we got that, there was no turning back from there. In simple words, a “One size fits all” solution does not work anymore, especially in the digital space and you need to start investing in a customer knowledge base. That is just the beginning. As painstaking as it may sound, it is really worth 64
investing in knowing more about your customers because only when you understand them better, do you know when to market to them and what kind of products they would be interested in. Believe me, there may be no guaranteed way to fully understand your customers but getting to know their behavior is pretty close. Mapping their journeys can help online businesses know product and industry trends, can help brick and mortar retail businesses know when to re-order stocks and can help sales managers and CFOs forecast sales for the future. They may not be a hundred percent accurate but they will definitely be close enough for you to plan your strategy moving forward. Let’s face it; today’s consumers are selfobsessed, needy, demanding and outspoken. Like I said in one of my previous articles a few months ago, today’s customers are all about “Me”. Giving them a customized pathway that integrates the products they use with their lifestyle is the best way to not only reach out to them in ways that they understand but to make them feel closer to the brand. In less than a decade, consumers will want to consume smart, tailored content based on their social graphs. They will want to interact with it not just with touch, which is commonplace in 2016 but with voice and gesture as well. Brands will need
to embed everything into their content right from social sharing APIs to instantaneous eCommerce or mCommerce functionality into it. Even though augmented reality hasn’t kicked off as much as I thought it would in this part of the world, give it some time. I think there is every likelihood that AR apps will rule the roost and we are all going to be wearing what I call “Iron Man suits” or at least an Iron Man helmet with which we will be able to see details of products before we buy them by simply hovering our smartphones over them or even looking at them through our VR kits that will be no more than a pair of glasses in the next few years. One way or another, for brands to ensure that they get through to their customers in a decade’s time, they will need to start making serious investments in digital integration and pay close attention to meCommerce!

SKYFIT APP PUTS PERSONAL TRAINER IN YOUR POCKET By Jennifer Van Grove
Two months ago, I was bombarded by Instagram ads for a subscription fitness app named Skyfit. The app promised, with the help of professional trainers who coach with just their voices, to do the impossible: eliminate the monotony from treadmill and other indoor gym workouts. A cynic by profession, I was, to say the least, incredulous. But I was also desperate. This outdoor runner needed an indoor alternative when the summer heat became unbearable. And so I reluctantly downloaded the app, knowing I could easily abandon it after the free seven-day trial. I didn’t. Instead, and I don’t say this lightly, I became obsessed with Skyfit’s voice-based approach to fitness, which is kind of like the digital fitness program Daily Burn, but minus the video and plus a ton more variety. With Skyfit, users who download the app and select a subscription option can choose from hundreds of studio-style audio classes across categories such as treadmill, outdoor running,
66
elliptical, indoor cycling, yoga and strength training. Then, you just put your earbuds in and let your preferred coach handle everything else, including audio cues and music selection. So, for instance, Skyfit trainer Marq Brown (my personal favorite), a former professional football player, will talk through you an advance treadmill-plus-bodyweight class, like “Fit Mix Mashup,” telling you exactly when to increase your speed and when to jump off and do a circuit of squats. And he’ll play songs that match the style of workout, while sharing some tough-love words — “make it burn” or “don’t feel sorry for yourself” — to keep you moving. But why just audio? “I had confidence that audio would be a more powerful platform (than video),” said Ethan Agarwal, founder and CEO of New York-based Skyfit. “If I’m running outside, I don’t want to be staring at a 4-inch screen.” Agarwal started the company while in search of a way to lose the extra weight he had gained during graduate studies at Wharton. Though he had enough funds to pay for a personal trainer, he had an epiphany: most people can’t afford that luxury.
That means a fitness neophyte’s good intentions are often sidelined by the what-should-I-do-at-thegym conundrum. Maybe it seems odd to pay for what essentially amounts to a workout podcast — I certainly thought so at first — but Skyfit seems to have a hit a nerve with people looking for affordable, no-pressure fitness regimens. First launched on iPhone about a year ago, Skyfit says its customers are now completing nearly 11,000 classes per day. The company’s Android app debuted earlier this month. Though not a perfect comparison, the trendy spin brand SoulCycle disclosed last year that its studios average 72,000 rides per week (or 10,286 rides per day). Backed by a modest $1.5 million in funding, Skyfit now employs nine full-time staffers and works with 14 professional trainers. The company is adding 150 to 200 new classes each month, all of which are vetted by head trainer Rochelle Baxter-Moncourtois. So, for cheapskates like me, the only real downside is that Skyfit costs money.

FROM ONE CHOCOHOLIC TO ANOTHER
Meeting Chef Erik Landegren of Kuwait’s new Bridgewater Chocolate By bazaar staff
Left to right: Wassim Arabi, Erik Landegren, Mohammed Alshaya, Andrew Blauner, Patti Landegren.
Who doesn’t love chocolate? Swedish Chef Erik Landegren sure does and in fact, he calls himself a “chocoholic”. When he gifted the United States with his take on perfectly handcrafted chocolates that marry classic American confections with European quality, this resulted in the quality Bridgewater Chocolate – an artisanal brand of chocolate that is so rich and indulgent, without being overly luxurious or pretentious. The award-winning American chocolate brand, has landed in Kuwait, marking its first foray into the Middle East in partnership with retail franchise operator M.H. Alshaya Co. Originating in 1995 from Erik’s inspiration to start selling his chocolate creations in a local Connecticut specialty food store, Bridgewater 68
Chocolate’s products are handmade using the finest European ingredients, with high levels of naturally sweet cocoa that result in rich and sophisticated blends. The chocolates are made with 100% cocoa butter to lower the melting point, which creates the smoothest and silkiest chocolate. And since their inception to the market, the variety of Bridgewater Chocolate has only expanded. The 40 delicious flavors include oozing caramel and chewy, buttery English and Irish toffees. There is also a selection of fruit-based products for those with tropical taste buds, including Australian Apricots, Spanish Orange Peel, and Cherry Heart, as well as chewy caramels wrapped around a selection of nuts. Bridgewater Chocolate adds a special touch to symbolic occasions and cherished family moments, from weddings, birthdays and baby showers to corporate gifts, festive occasions and family luncheons. Elegant and sophisticated,
Bridgewater Chocolate’s signature classic hinged navy blue box comes with wired gold ribbon, and carries the iconic image of the flagship Bridgewater village store. Each box can be personalized to celebrate every occasion. Bridgewater Chocolate has won numerous awards over the past 20 years, and is often featured on Food Network and other media outlets. Its key to success has been simple and unchanged over the years: uncompromising highquality ingredients in all of its products, classic American flavors and style, individually and delicately handcrafted chocolates, and an elegant signature packaging that reflects the quality of the chocolates. The Bridgewater story is all about one man’s pursuit of perfect chocolate, which is why we at bazaar were so excited to meet with the man himself who told us of this journey and why having these chocolates available to us here in Kuwait is the ultimate treat.
When did your love affair with chocolate begin? I was in love with chocolate from a young age. When I arrived to the US in 1987, I realized that the Americans shared my love for chocolate, but their chocolate traditions were different than what I was used to, as they tend to like a lot of nutty, chewy, nougat filled confections. The difference in their confections sparked my interest in making chocolate so that I could ultimately combine American confection with European quality. From there, how did Bridgewater Chocolate materialize? I was in the restaurant business, but I would make chocolate confections on the side just for fun. When I moved to Bridgewater, Connecticut, I was given the opportunity to manage a small food store, and we wanted to vamp it up a bit by adding in some specialty sections: a bakery, pastries, artisanal food – so I proposed a chocolate selection, and it was a hit. Four years later, in 1995, the demand for my chocolates was expanding, so it became its own business. What separates Bridgewater Chocolate from other chocolatiers? I think that conceptually, we offer good quality and value to everyone. A Kuwaiti blogger recently said to me, “I have a niece who’s five and a grandmother who’s 80 and they both love chocolate. I feel like I can bring them both in here and they’ll find something they really like.” I want to offer something for everyone – good quality and value to both the niece and the grandma. It is unique to itself but it is compared to many others. What is the most popular product within the Bridgewater Chocolate product range? Our signature Pecan Törtéls were the first chocolate I ever made for the store, and it’s still our best seller. The US market also enjoys our Peanut Butter confection. I also feel close to this particular chocolate because before making it, I wasn’t crazy about peanut butter… then I developed a taste for it. It made me realize that you can really acquire a taste for things, and I promised myself I wouldn’t make products that I didn’t like. Peanut butter changed my mind and won my heart. Why did you choose to partner with M. H. Alshaya and what prompted the international expansion? When we came to Kuwait to meet with Alshaya, the decision was easy. Alshaya does a great job making the experience, presentation and service of each brand come alive, and what I like most about them is that they don’t change or disturb the brand, they only make it a little better. This is the first Bridgewater Chocolate store outside the US and it’s already off to a good start. Why do you think Bridgewater Chocolate is right for Kuwait and The Avenues? I think The Avenues embodies something similar to our core concept: it isn’t pretentious, but it represents elegance and class. I like to think we are classy and represent quality. I think Bridgewater Chocolates are suitable for the population here for all ages and genders, and I feel that because The Avenues caters to all of Kuwait, we will fit in well here. Bridgewater Chocolate is now available in Kuwait at Grand Avenues—The Avenues, next to Victoria’s Secret. To find out more about Bridgewater Chocolate, call 2228 3806 and follow them on Instagram @BridgewaterChocolateME or Facebook/Bridgewater Chocolate ME.

IT’S ALL ABOUT BALANCE By Dr Susannah-Joy Schuilenberg
We are connected today in ways that didn’t exist twenty years ago. Many of us can’t imagine life without instant forms of communication and sharing. We share microbytes of our lives as they happen; in pictures, 140 characters, or posts that exist only to evaporate once viewed by the recipient. We share both the highlight reel and the bloopers of our lives hoping viewers will respond. We ask for money, prayers, good vibes, happy thoughts, and 'Likes'. We express outrage, sorrow, anger, and frustration at the real and perceived injustices in the world, and urge each other to post pictures of puppies, nature, and men in kilts in retaliation for all the negative posts of war, violence, racism, and politics. Whether debate, discussion, philosophy, or clickbait, we scroll through the offerings of the moment from friends, family, strangers, ads, fan pages, groups, and charities. We do this all day, every day. And yet, we are, research data shows, the loneliest, most disconnected individuals E.V.E.R. We cry over bombs in Syria, dead toddlers on the beach, and strangers with cancer, yet chances are we don’t know our neighbours by name, we haven’t attended a personal social gathering in person in the past 14 days, and we regularly go to bed with a digital device. The cost to our mental, emotional, and physical health of this personal disconnect is tremendous; an exponential rise in depression, social anxiety and sadly, suicide, in adolescents to 30-somethings is alarming. A few years ago, I worked with a 20-something client who was struggling to be successful in university. She was smart, accomplished, creative, and really happy with the program she’d chosen, but she was failing abysmally, because she couldn’t make herself go to class. The degree of anxiety she felt in a social setting completely paralyzed her. What she said about her anxiety struck me as profoundly sad. “When I am face-to-face with someone, they always feel bigger than me. Like they have no edges. If I feel uncomfortable, I can’t just hit ‘mute’ or say ‘brb’ and walk away for a few moments. There’s no ‘unfriend’ or ‘delete’ button in person, and I feel overwhelmed by almost every encounter I have because I can’t manage the other’s input in the moment, and I become anxious. I don’t know what to do with people in real life.” Another client I worked with became Facebook friends with someone through a mutual membership in a photography group. Though he didn’t know the individual personally, after several weeks of exchanges through the group, he accepted a friend request from this fellow photographer. After several months, both of them were going to be in London at the same time, and arranged to meet. When he returned from this trip, my client wanted 70
to talk about this meeting. “Before I met him in person, I would have said he is my friend. Our conversations on Facebook felt real and genuine. What I expected in person was a continuation of that feeling of connection. What actually happened is that we both realized that we had a false sense of intimacy – of knowing – that wasn’t really present in person. It was an interesting meeting, but both of us acknowledged that without the commonality of the photography group it was unlikely we would have gravitated toward friendship in person. We will remain connected through the Facebook group, but I have unfriended him. He is not someone I would choose to have coffee with in person.” Don’t get me wrong. There is definitely a place for digital relationships in our lives. Research results indicate that a balance between online and in-person interactions can be healthy, increasing the satisfaction in relationships and an individual’s overall sense of well-being. Things go pear-shaped when relational interaction is too heavily weighted toward the digital context and there is no distinction made between virtual and in-person relationships.
The research is clear –friendship online which does NOT begin as a face-to-face relationship may create an unrealistic sense of connection and of knowing ~ a false sense of intimacy ~ that actually doesn’t exist outside the digital medium. That is not to say that these relationships cannot become existent and tangible – far from it. The point is not to discard or discount these relationships, but to recognize their limitations and to be mindful of the impact of the forms of friendship we encourage. Too many virtual friendships and not enough face-toface relationships may shrink your world to the size of the screen of your favourite digital device. Since we must exist in reality, it is vital that we learn to successfully interact with others in whatever context we may find ourselves. If you struggle with anxiety when in a social setting, it would be beneficial to create better balance in relationships in your life …for the sake of your mental and emotional health.

THE COLLABORATION THAT’S BREAKING ALL THE RULES
By bazaar staff
It’s every style maven’s favorite season: Fall/Winter collections have hit the stores. This year, H&M has teamed up with the legendary brand KENZO, creating an unforgettable FW2016 collection that’s sure to be a hit. The vibrant and playful Parisian fashion house promises a collection that captures its unique, youthful spirit, created by creative directors Carol Lim and Humberto Leon. They have curated collections for women, men and accessories, which will be available in 250 selected H&M stores worldwide from November 3, 2016.
72
Since joining KENZO in 2011, Carol and Huberto have set a unique fashion agenda with collections full of bold colors and vivid prints. We at bazaar can hardly contain our excitement for this collection’s release, and judging from our chat with Carol and Huberto, as well as H&M’s creative director, Ann-Sofie Johansson, it’s going to be a great one! Interview with Humberto Leon and Carol Lim What does collaborating with H&M mean for Kenzo? Humberto Leon: We’re very excited to be collaborating with H&M. There are so many people around the world who don’t know the amazing history of the brand, or the work of our founder Kenzo Takada. For us, KENZO x H&M is the perfect opportunity to tell the story of KENZO to a new generation, and to look at the work of Mr. Takada through our own eyes. How will Kenzo’s overall spirit be incorporated into this collection? Carol Lim: This is the first time we’ve ever truly played with the archives, and we had such a great time researching the collection. It was amazing to see how modern Mr. Takada’s designs still look today. He broke all the rules and designed with total freedom, clashing colors and prints and mixing influences from around the world. He’s such an inspirational designer, and we want everyone to have as much fun experimenting with their look as we had designing it. KENZO x H&M is about mixing it up, trying something new and breaking the rules, just like Kenzo Takada did. What type of Kenzo’s trademark styles should we look out for in the collection? HL: It was great to bring together the signature KENZO styles that people know, and also some that are less familiar. KENZO x H&M is full of clashing colors and prints, with prints both from the KENZO archives as well as those that Carol and I have designed. There’s a mix of global and folkloric influences that are as important to us as they were to Mr. Takada. But maybe people didn’t know that KENZO has a romantic, feminine side. Mr. Takada loved to play with ruffles and frills, capturing the effortless style of Paris in the 1970s. We’ve loved bringing these influences into the collection to create a true picture of the KENZO DNA. What type of audience does this collection target? CL: It’s so exciting to think of the different people who will be coming to KENZO x H&M. There are those who will be buying their first ever piece of KENZO, maybe even teenagers buying their first ever piece of designer fashion. Then there are those who have made our version of KENZO part of their wardrobe, who will be coming to the collection to get something totally unique. We’d also love to think that some original customers of Mr. Takada will also be shopping from KENZO x H&M, to find pieces that remind them of their youth. But really, KENZO x H&M is for anyone who loves the fun of fashion, and we can’t wait to see how people wear the collection in their own way. Do you feel that the Kenzo spirit is a reflection of Middle Eastern street fashion in any way? [Continued...]
73
[...Continued] HL: We love that fashion is such a global language that is shared among countries around the world. We’ve always been influenced by different cultures since we started Opening Ceremony, and its something that’s always been a big part of the KENZO style. KENZO x H&M is full of so many pieces that you can make part of your street style look, whether it's the logo sweatshirt with the frilled mandarin collar, the reversible kimono coat, the longsleeve fluid printed silk dress or the medallion sweater. We love all the accessories too, like the boots with the rubber sole, the leather shopper tote or the tiger print scarf. Interview with Ann-Sofie Johansson: How has it been, collaborating with Kenzo? We’re so excited that KENZO has agreed to be the next H&M designer collaboration. Since they started as creative directors, Carol and Humberto have brought such amazing energy and attitude to one of the most famous Parisian brands. It was so great to watch Carol and Humberto at work, and to see how much they love fashion. They have such a great understanding of the brand, and how you can use color, print and special detailing to create pieces that look such a pleasure to wear. They are involved in every stage of the design process, and I think you can see their passion in every single piece of KENZO x H&M. How would you describe the collection? KENZO x H&M is bursting with print and color! As soon as you see this collection, it makes you smile. With the collection, Carol and Humberto are giving us all permission to try something new. It’s okay to clash colors and prints, and to create a look that’s fun and daring. However you choose to wear KENZO x H&M, we know that everyone is going to have so much fun. How is this collaboration different from previous designer collections? We like to challenge ourselves with everything that we do at H&M. We always want to think big and push ourselves to always make something special. It’s something you can see throughout KENZO x H&M, whether it’s the handcrafting on the ribbon dress, or the attention paid to the extra details, like the tiger head zipper pulls or the zigzag frames of the sunglasses and the heels of the sock boots. We set ourselves the biggest challenge with each of our designer collaborations, and we’re always so glad we did so. What does this collection offer that is completely unique to the market? We love that each of the designers we collaborate with want to make a collection for such a diverse audience. At H&M we believe that fashion and style should be for everyone, and it’s great when the collaborations include pieces for all of our customers. For the latest details check out the hashtag #KENZOxHM, twitter and Instagram @HM @KENZO, Facebook @H&M and @Kenzo and Snapchat hm_snaps. This exclusive collection will be available in selected H&M stores across the Middle East starting 3rd November, 2016. 74

THE PORSCHE CAYENNE Chalet weekends just got more fun By bazaar staff
There’s nothing better than getting into your car and tackling the open road to your favorite beach spot after a busy workweek. Luckily, living in Kuwait has made that quite easy. After the Thursday afternoon traffic rush, all you have to do is pack-up and get ready to start enjoying your weekend - just get into your car and just drive off to the chalet to get some well-deserved down time by the sea with your loved ones. Everyone knows that you need a good-sized car with ample space and great suspension to get you to your weekend haven comfortably. That’s where the Porsche Cayenne comes in. We took it out for the weekend to see what the buzz is about and were incredibly surprised just how great this sports SUV is.
76
First, let’s start with the Cayenne’s history as it represents a unique Porsche success story. In 2002 Porsche showcased the first generation of Cayenne models. This sports car, smartly presented in the SUV segment, was an instant hit and quickly became a favorite amongst its consumers. Sales exceeded all expectations and more than 276,000 first generation vehicles rolled off the production line between 2002 and 2010. In 2010, Porsche rolled out the second generation of Cayenne models and more than 303,000 units have been sold. Since then, the Cayenne has become an icon in the sports SUV category and is continuously evolving to carry on its legacy. Today’s Cayenne has a much sharper design, its more efficient than its ancestors and showcases a higher quality of standard equipment that simply results in one of the best cars on the road. It provides both practicality and comfort while keeping to Porsche’s unmistakable DNA.
For the weekend out of the city, we loaded the Cayenne with almost anything and everything we could possibly need in order to have a truly relaxing time. Driving along Kuwait’s desert road is no smooth ride - and with the Cayenne, we didn’t feel a single bump. The car wasn’t affected by the weekend luggage and beach gear overload because the suspension configuration has been optimized for great comfort without compromising on its dynamic character. Porsche has given the Cayenne an even sharper look with precise lines and deliberately positioned light-refracting edges. The Bi-Xenon headlights come standard on the basic and S models with the “floating" four-point LED daytime running lights clearly identify the Cayenne as a Porsche at first glance. The Cayenne’s rear has also undergone extensive modifications: The taillights now have a three-dimensional arrangement and – like the LED daytime running
lights at the front – the brake lights have a fourpart design and the restyled exhaust tailpipes are now integrated in the lower rear panel. Trust us, all heads turned when we arrived at the chalet in this beauty, and the way the car looked in the evening was simply stunning. The engine used in the Cayenne base model is the familiar 3.6-litre naturally aspirated engine, delivering 300 hp. This allows the Cayenne to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds – 7.6 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package. That's 0.2 seconds faster than previous models, and we totally felt it as we drove along the highway— the car felt as though it’s floating along the asphalt, allowing you to be completely at ease with the speed and smoothness of the drive. Like all Cayenne models it benefits from the general efficiency measures such as coasting, Auto Stop/Start function and thermal management. [Continued...] 77
[...Continued] Compared to the previous model, the Cayenne also offers more enhanced standard features with its sports feature. In addition to the eight-speed Tiptronic S with Auto Stop/Start and coasting functions, other features included are the Bi-Xenon main headlights with four-point LED daytime driving lights, the multifunction sports steering wheel with paddle switches and the automatic boot lid. Beautiful, dynamic and powerful – the Porsche Cayenne promises a smooth, safe ride for you and your family.

BAGELING IT
Ordering bagels… and more By bazaar staff
Another day at the office, and it’s lunchtime. Tummies are grumbling, and we’re in the mood to dine in, family style. It always happens that everyone wants something different – but one thing we can all agree on? (OK, two…) 1. Carb-fest for the win, and 2. We all miss bagels. Yes, yes – we know. There are bagel places in Kuwait. We get it – Kuwait has everything. But having bagels, a hot spot for bagels, no less, and even more than just bagels delivered right to your door? So exciting! Let us break it down for you. In our tiny office, we have frequenters of New York City, Montreal and the United Kingdom. Both Montreal and New York have the best bagels in the world. I don’t know what the UK has, but I’m sure they know their bagels at least a little. That being said, when we found Bagel It and More on Carriage, we knew that this was going to be a fun Eats In review. Especially after looking at their menu. What are you craving? Because Bagel It and More has it! Is someone on a diet? Fine, there are salads, and little snack options such as a cup of sliced apples with peanut butter on the side. There are bagel chips, bagel chipped nachos, sliders, pasta, pizza, falafel wraps, desserts and of course – bagels and bagel sandwiches. We decided to go for some classics, since we’re all huge fans of the bagel, after all. So we go ahead and put in an order for a decadent pile of Nachos, to satisfy our curiosities. We also add to our carefully curated feast, a Turkey Bagel Sandwich, Chicken Pesto Bagel Sandwich, Pepperoni Pizza Bagel (yes, you read that right!) and a trio of Sliders – because we’re adults and we can! We also had to take advantage of their freshly baked bagel selection and snuck in some plain bagels to take home for wonderful breakfast options. These bagels range from plain, sesame, black seed, za’atar, jalapeno, olive, cheese and cinnamon. Mornings just got a whole lot better! We were overjoyed once the food arrived and could hardly contain ourselves as we snapped some pre-damage shots. We tucked into our food with gusto, and the only sounds filling the room were satisfied munches. Some people feel opposed to using a bagel as a vessel for a sandwich, but Bagel 80
It and More pulls it off! These bagels are so fresh, buttery and soft that the bread choice brilliantly accompanies the artful fillings of each sandwich. The chicken pesto, tender and tangy, and the classic turkey, a combination you cant go wrong with. The pizza bagel is an interesting concept, and comes in the perfect size to sample if you’re curious – but warning: it will leave you wanting more. Its broiled to perfection cheesiness with crisp toppings of pepperoni makes for the perfect snack or side to a cozy bowl of soup. Now we know! The sliders surprised us – while they were excellent, made with an obviously freshly ground, quality hearty beef patty, and topped with classic accompaniments that made the flavors sing, we were for some reason expecting the buns would be made from mini bagels, rather than the pillow-soft and always delicious potato buns that sandwiched the delectable mini burgers. Obviously, if something isn’t broke you shouldn’t fix it, and we were glad to see that this classic was not tampered with, as it adds to the eclectic nature of their menu. Served with a generous side of fried cube potatoes
that served the perfect crunch that only certain fries have, we were definitely pleased. But don’t even get us started on those nachos – they were truly the showstopper here. Imagine your standard plate of nachos that you’ll always love, topped with melted cheddar, jalapenos and sour cream, but made with bagel chips instead of the standard tortilla. Needless to say, two bites in, we stopped being shy and attacked the whole thing in minutes. After polishing off our bagel-filled (and more!) feast, we returned to our desks happy. It’s always great to find another perfect goto lunch spot to add to our deliveries list, and we’re glad we found this one! Bagel It and More truly has something to offer for everybody, which is extremely satisfying. And don’t forget, bagels just make everything better. Happy eating!
Bagel It and More is located in Kipco Tower in Sharq! Follow them on Instagram @bagelitandmore.

MEET OCTOBOT, A SOFT-BODIED ROBOT THAT MOVES LIKE AN OCTOPUS By Amina Khan
Our future robot overlords never looked so squishy. A team of scientists led out of Harvard University have managed to build an entirely soft robot — one that’s inspired by an octopus. The octobot described in the journal Nature, could pave the way toward more effective soft robots that could be used in search and rescue, exploration and to more safely interact with humans. “The octobot is a minimal system designed to demonstrate our integrated design and fabrication strategy,” the study authors wrote, “which may serve as a foundation for a new generation of completely soft, autonomous robots.” Traditionally, robots have been seen as stiff, angular entities, made of metal and other rigid materials (think C-3PO in Star Wars). But there’s a good historical reason for that, scientists say. “Robots are typically used in manufacturing contexts that involve well-structured environments,” Barbara Mazzolai and Virgilio Mattoli of the Italian Institute of Technology’s Center for Micro-BioRobotics, who were not involved in the study, wrote in a commentary. “These situations allow them to move following predefined procedures, limiting interactions 82
with human operators for safety reasons.” But if you take these robots out of factories and put them in real world, things start to get dicey. Robots built for precise, repetitive movements in a controlled environment don’t do so well on rough terrain or changing conditions. And they aren’t especially safe around humans, because they’re made out of hard parts and can’t accurately adjust the force they wield on much-more-pliant people. So researchers have been working on building soft (or at least softer) robots for decades, and they’ve been getting better and better over time. They’ve taken inspiration from nature, looking to animals from jellyfish to cockroaches, which are often made primarily of soft (or very flexible) parts. But building a completely soft robot has remained a challenge, because even if engineers can build a silicone body, they still had trouble building soft versions of certain essential parts, such as the control system and the power source. “Creating a new class of fully soft, autonomous robots is a grand challenge, because it requires soft analogues of the control and power hardware currently used,” the study authors wrote. But for this paper, researchers from Harvard’s Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering managed
to do just that. Octobot’s eight arms move thanks to a pneumatic system of inflatable compartments. The moving parts are connected to a network of channels that send liquid fuel (a hydrogen peroxide solution) to mix with a platinum-based catalyst in certain reaction chambers. As the fuel decomposes, it releases pressurized oxygen that inflates the actuators, allowing the octobot to move. These movements are controlled by a series of logic gates — basically a fluid-filled version of a circuit board. The scientists managed to create this complex system using several techniques, including softlithography and multi-material embedded 3-D printing. Octobot is just the first step toward creating more advanced and capable robots, researchers said; its capabilities are pretty limited. But designing and building more complex robots will mean integrating several different materials and improving many different abilities, including movement, power and control and octobot shows that it can be done. “Although soft robotics is still in its infancy, it holds great promise for several applications, such as servicing and inspecting machinery, search-and-rescue operations, and exploration,” Mazzolai and Mattoli wrote. “Soft robots might also open up new approaches to improving wellness and quality of life.”

3 EASY WAYS TO RESPOND TO EVERY EMAIL IN 24 HOURS OR LESS By Sara McCord
You nod along when everyone around you is talking about how they achieve inbox zero. But truthfully, you never feel like you get there. And in your defense, that’s because you receive messages that require lengthy or thoughtful responses. Someone asked for your opinion, and you’d like to take the time to formulate it. Or there’s a five-page attachment for your review—and so you’ll need to review it. Or you want to word your response a certain way and would like to wait until you’re fresh. By setting an expectation for when he can expect a thorough response, you’re being thoughtful. The standard solutions for this situation all kind of suck. You can "confirm receipt," but that sounds super formal, and there’s no telling when the other person will prod you with a note that roughly translates to, "And . . . ?" You can leave an autoresponder on 24-7, but that may not be your style— and you’re still not providing a specific answer. Or you can just take your time, but you’ll have left the other person wondering and waiting. There’s a trick I recently fell into that has solved this problem for me. I aim to reply within 24 hours (if not much sooner), with a line that buys me some time. It satisfies the other person that I’m on it, gives me time to follow up when it works according to my schedule, and gets me that much closer to inbox zero. Here are three of my favorites. 1. "I’LL BE IN TOUCH IN APPROXIMATELY [TIME FRAME]" I had a former boss who always stressed the importance of managing expectations. Informing people on the front end allows you to bypass confusion and frustration. And the best way to do it is—in the words of the popular adage—underpromise, over-deliver. If you simply wait a week to get back to someone, he’ll assume you considered it a low priority—and that doesn’t make anyone feel good. However, if you write him back right away clarifying when you will be in touch, it seems like it was really important to you to provide a timeline as soon as humanly possible. By setting an expectation for when he can expect a thorough response, you’re being thoughtful. And if you beat that date, you’re no longer the person who took five days to respond: You’re the person who said she’d need a week but replied two days early. 2. "I’M PUSHING UP AGAINST A DEADLINE" When you’re putting off a request, people often to like to know why. Think about it: If someone 84
stops by your desk to brainstorm, she’ll probably be thrown off if you say "no" and then turn back to your keyboard. But she’s less likely to be offended if you tell her you can’t because you’re busy preparing for a meeting (or some other totally valid excuse, such as wrapping up projects before your vacation). Since you’ve shared that you can’t expedite your reply, there’s no reason for the other person to pressure you to write back. This reply follows similar logic. By sharing what’s on your plate, you make it possible for your connection to empathize with your workload. She’ll know that you’re not ignoring her; rather you’re preoccupied and need a couple of days before you can give her email your full attention. I tried this approach and found people appreciated that I even took the time to reach back in such a time-crunched state. Instead of being frustrated or emailing me again a day or two later looking for a response, they wished me good luck and told me to check back in when it worked for me.
3. "I’D LIKE TO RUN THAT BY A COLLEAGUE WHO’S OUT OF THE OFFICE" This is another line I stumbled upon simply by telling the truth. Most of my team was out of the office a few weeks back, and so I had to postpone any responses that required internal feedback or approval. Instead of responding like I was giving them the runaround, people were—again—very understanding. We’ve all had those workdays when our hands are tied, and since you’ve shared that you can’t expedite your reply, there’s no reason for the other person to pressure you to write back. Replying to emails in a timely fashion is worthwhile for everyone involved. It helps you clear out your inbox, and it helps the other person get whatever information he or she needs. And while it may not always be possible to give a full response, it’s almost always possible to say something. So, skip a half-thought-out or rushed reply and pick a line that’ll buy you some time. It’ll make your contact feel like you really care, and it’ll allow you to take the time you need to do good work.

Sawab In Islam, Sawab is an Arabic term meaning ‘reward’ and accumulates from the performance of good deeds and piety, one of which is the act of fully reading the holy book of the Quran also known as ‘Khatma’ or conclusion. A common Islamic tradition for Muslims is to meet and complete the readings of the Quran in groups, an activity often indulged in during the holy month of Ramadan. Sawab, which is inspired from this tradition, is a simple and user-friendly application that facilitates the reading of the Quran through the formation of online groups. Circles of 30 users, identified only by a flag of their location, are added with the purpose of collectively and swiftly reading through all the 30 chapters or ‘Juz’ of the holy book. Once a user has completed his or her chapter, they move on to another until reaching Khatma. The app also features memory tests after the completion of every chapter, in addition to a performance/ history log where users can check their memory strength, reading speed, weekly activity and the number of Juz or Khatma they have completed. Sawab is also a bilingual app and users can choose to read their allocated part of the Quran text in Arabic, add a Latin character transliteration option or even listen to a streamed recording of a section. Today, the app has a 4+ rating in both the iOS and Android app stores, and has amassed up to 50,000 installs since launching.
ReturnHound Kavit Handa, CEO of UAE startup ReturnHound and a travel-savvy businessman, was motivated to found his startup when his six-year-old daughter was distraught over losing her cherished Minnie Mouse soft toy while holidaying in the Maldives. In a world where more than 250,000 belongings go missing every day in hotels, airports and on airplanes, ReturnHound has been redefining the meaning of ‘lost and found’. The ReturnHound process is pretty simple and starts with staff first logging the lost items they discover. When customers realize they have lost an item, they contact the venue and are given a web link to an online form, where they enter information about the lost item and circumstances of its loss. Once a match is found, the hotel staff is alerted, customers are notified by email and the shipping process begins. While a few ‘lost items locator’ apps do exist today, most work through social media platforms where users describe what they have lost and where, in hopes that someone might find the item and contact them. ReturnHound, on the other hand, is the only global, end-to-end and multilingual digital platform for retrieving lost items and makes use of a cloud-based system, meaning there are no software or hardware associations. The service works for everywhere people might lose things, however it has already proven highly valuable to the hotel industry. Hyatt hotels and resorts have already been user-testing the system in the UAE since early 2016 and formally rolled it out in June. Moreover, the startup has also established a contract with international delivery provider, Aramex, from whom they have received investments. Although ReturnHound is currently focused on Dubai and the UAE, Handa has plans to expand the platform globally over the next 12 months.

Feloosy In August 2015, Karim Beltaji, CEO of Feloosy, and his team created a Facebook page with the message ‘Coming Soon: The new way to effectively manage your money online.’ Beltaji, a serial entrepreneur, left his job as an investment banker in 2013, and moved to Berlin to learn about the German startup scene. After working with several startups and incubators, he returned to Egypt to work on FinTech concepts for the Egyptian market. The concept of Feloosy (MyMoney) is similar to existing models in other markets, such as the acorns and wealthfront app, yet is specifically tailored to Egypt. The goal of Feloosy is to make saving and investing easier for young employed Egyptians, aged 25-30 years old, by providing them with a platform to deposit small amounts of money, which are then invested by the company’s financial partners in low and medium risk instruments like Money Market Funds and Exchange-Traded Funds. While Feloosy does take a percentage of profits, it does not charge transaction fees and as the website explains ‘Any money we make is directly linked to the growth of your wealth and you achieving your goal.’ Feloosy finalized a seed-funding round in May 2016, and is currently in its pilot stage. While the website is operational, deposits cannot yet be made.
The List Founded by Dubai-based European entrepreneur Andreas Skorski, The List (gothelist.com) is a global platform dedicated to rare and exclusive luxury products and offers a refined virtual shopping experience with round-the-clock access to the world’s most sought-after products. In March 2016, The List launched its oneweek ‘Referral Campaign’ where the full-fledged platform was revealed. The campaign included a strong social media presence and email campaigns, yet the highlight of the campaign was sharing the platform with friends and family using messaging applications such as Whatsapp with an immediate call to action and referral rewards that included a luxury yacht cruise on Riva Yacht’s latest model, the Floria 88. Needless to say, it was no surprise when the platform reached an impressive number of 20,000 subscribers on its landing page in just seven days. Today, The List has a fully functioning website whose concept is based on being the world’s most exclusive online marketplace where users can sell and buy a range of rare and unique highend luxury products. Although not unique in its concept, with competitors such as The Luxury Closet in Dubai and others abroad (worthy. com, jamesedition.com, luxify.com and more), the platform does offer a distinctive concierge service, where a dedicated team caters to clients’ unique requirements by identifying products that match their lifestyle and personality.
Repzo Established earlier this year in Jordan, Repzo is the region’s first Arabic driven mobile sales CRM (customer relationship management) application. The Repzo app combines several business productivity utilities into a single management center that allows busy professionals to track and manage their customer/client interactions, present and finalize forms and purchase orders with clients while in the field and access a database of customer locations with full GPS navigation. Although founded in Jordan, Repzo is an international app and can be used by all companies with field employees to manage and track their teams. While most large corporations use expensive handhelds to manage their reps, Repzo is a subscription based application and only demands a small fee in comparison, starting at 20$/month/rep. To date, no other Arabic mobile CRM app exists in the market, and in addition to being bilingual (Arabic and English), Repzo also offers push notifications on all activities made by reps, a feature missing from other international mobile CRM applications. With its seamless possibilities for connectivity, Repzo’s features made it a perfect fit to represent Jordan at the Mobile World Congress in Shanghai earlier this month. As it grows, Repzo aims to cater to a large spectrum of industries that include FMCG, Healthcare, Sales Teams, Merchandisers and Service Companies.

Play My Way Once a luxury enjoyed exclusively by adults, today’s smartphones and tablets serve as multi-functional tools for education, communication and playtime for younger generations. While screen-time can be beneficial to a certain extent, most parents struggle with limiting the amount of time their children spend on smartphones, especially on addictive games and social media platforms. Beirut-based developers at Scope, many of whom are parents with the same struggle, realized that the only solution to the problem was to find a compromise or a ‘win-win’ situation. Rather than create another educational app like so many other MENA entrepreneurs (knowing that games are not among investors’ priorities), they developed Play My Way, a mobile app that works on top of other apps, interrupting gameplay and any other running operations at parent-specified intervals to challenge children with educational questions. Play My Way currently offers 3 subjects, 9 grade levels and over 25,000 questions (all of which can be controlled by parents) in addition to a detailed report that they can view. The first chapter of each subject is free, serving as a trial version for users. Parents can then buy each subject for 0.99$ to access all the chapters. TowMyDrive Owned and managed by Xpertogo Solutions DMCC, TowMyDrive is a free app that allows UAE drivers to directly request roadside assistance via GPS-enabled technology. While similar in nature to other apps such Morni KSA, TowMyDrive is the first and only road assistance app in the country. Due to the app’s proximity based dispatch that matches the closest roadside assistance unit with the driver, the app provides assistance faster than any traditional method, with stranded motorists being serviced within 15 minutes on average by the TowMyDrive support network. All stranded drivers have to do is open the TowMyDrive app, tap the ‘GET HELP NOW’ button and enter their service request whether it be towing, replacing a flat tire, jumpstarting the car, a car wash or need for fuel. The GPSenabled app then tracks their location and transmits the details to the nearest provider. Within seconds, the user will receive a confirmation and can track the progress of the driver as he approaches the location and even pay for the service with a credit car or cash once it has been completed. TowMyDrive’s growing vehicle service network currently has more than 2,000 service partners across Dubai, assuring even faster service 24 hours a day, seven days a week and at affordable flat rates which users can even view online on the TowMyDrive website.
Petriotics Petriotics is a monthly delivery service that brings pet food and supplies to animal owners in Lebanon, while helping local animal organizations at no extra cost. Nader Zaatari, the co-founder and director of the startup, having already established a social network for the animal community in 2013, wanted to connect animal rights organizations with more supporters. With a seed funding of $25,000 from AltCity, Nader was able to explore the real needs of animal owners and conduct research to focus on developing a concept. Today, Petriotics website is up and running and offers pet parents the option of choosing between a variety of pet food brands or a premium pet box that includes treats, toys and accessories. Pet parents can schedule deliveries depending on how frequently their pet consumes his food and box, choose their favorite non-profit animal organization that they would like to support, and pay cash on delivery or online. While similar startups do exist in the region, such as DubaiPetFood.com, Petriotics go beyond being just a delivery service and offer 10% of their profits to animal welfare organizations in Lebanon. In terms of future plans, Petriotics have already begun pushing to grow their customer base and are aiming to soon expand to the MENA region, especially to GCC countries with a special focus on the UAE.

DON’T TURN A BLIND EYE TO BREAST CANCER SYMPTOMS By Breast Cancer Arabia Team
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, in both the developed and less developed world. It is estimated that worldwide, over 508,000 women died in 2011 due to breast cancer. (Global Health Estimates, WHO 2013) Although breast cancer is thought to be a disease of the developed world, almost 50% of breast cancer cases and 58% of deaths occur in less developed countries. THE RISKS OF BREAST CANCER A major risk factor is gender: Simply being a woman is the main risk factor for developing breast cancer. Men can develop breast cancer, but this disease is about 100 times more common among women than men. This is probably because men have less of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone, which can promote breast cancer cell growth. Other risk factors include: • Age • Family history of breast cancer • Personal history of breast cancer • Race and ethnicity • Early menstruation and late menopause • Dense breast tissue • Breast conditions Some of the modifiable risk factors include: • Physical activity • Being overweight or obese • Drinking alcohol • Smoking • Use of hormones: birth control pills, IVF and HRT • Pregnancy and breastfeeding BREAST SELF EXAMINATION - IS IT EFFECTIVE? One of the most stressed messages regarding breast cancer prevention concerns breast selfexamination (BSE). But what nobody wonders or asks is, ‘What are the benefits, if any, for detecting breast cancers earlier?’ There were two very large studies carried out on BSE - The Russian Federation Study sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) of 266,064 women and The Shanghai Study of over 193,000 women. The objective of these studies was to find out the role of BSE in the reduction of mortality from breast cancer. Ten years after The Russian Federation Study began, it was found there was no benefit from breast selfexamination. Like the women in China, the Russians who examined their breasts had the same mortality rate as those who did not. Their cancers were not found earlier, but they had more biopsies for benign lumps. The important thing to know about BSE is that it should not be used as a substitute for medical investigations such as mammography. Rather it is so you 92
know what is the norm for your breasts – how they look and feel, and that way if you do see or feel any changes you should report these to your doctor straight away. DON’T STAY QUIET ABOUT CHANGES IN YOUR BREAST There are many breast changes to look out for: A change in the size, outline or shape of your breast, especially when you move your arm or lift your breast. Other changes can occur in the look or feel of your skin, such as puckering or dimpling. Discomfort or pain in one breast is another change to be aware of, particularly if it’s a new pain and doesn’t go away. Look out for any new lumps, or the thickening or bumpy area in one breast or armpit that is different from the same area on the other side. Nipple changes to be aware of is discharge that isn’t milky (bleeding discharge, specifically), and a moist, red area on your nipple that doesn’t heal easily. Changes in nipple position, such as your nipple being pulled in or pointing differently, and rashes on or around your nipple are cause for concern as well. Don’t stay quiet about changes or symptoms, report these to your doctor and get a referral to a specialist. CANCER SPECIALISTS EXPLAINED The three main ways of treating breast cancer are with medicine, radiation and surgery. Not every person will need all three treatments, it depends upon the type of cancer and the
stage of the cancer. However, they may see the following specialists: Surgical oncologist (a surgeon who has special training in treating cancer and also remove tumors or other cancerous tissue), medical oncologist (also in charge of chemotherapy, hormone therapy and immunotherapy) and radiation oncologist (treats cancer with radiation therapy). Make sure that the surgeon who is treating you is a breast cancer specialist and is not just a general surgeon. Make sure that your surgeon works within a TEAM of specialists – this is called the Multidisciplinary Team. It goes without saying that ALL of the members of the multidisciplinary team should also be specialized in the treatment of breast cancer. It has been conclusively proven that Breast Cancer Specialists have superior patient outcomes when compared with unspecialized doctors. Choose wisely – your life may literally depend on this. Ask your surgeons about their qualification training and experience. A good doctor would be more than happy to discuss their qualifications and experience with you and will explain the treatment process fully so you are able to understand what is happening and going to happen. bazaar would like to thank Breast Cancer Arabia for the above information. FORGET BLUEPRINTS—FOR THE YOUNG ARCHITECTS OF TOMORROW, IT'S ALL ABOUT "MINECRAFT" By Ainsley O'connell
Six-year-old Olive Sáenz has been "obsessed" with Minecraft for about a year, says her mother, Andrea Sáenz. "She spends hours building stuff, blowing stuff up, and building stuff again. She’s been pretty amazing at self-teaching." But until this past summer, the video game was a solo experience for Olive, who is just now learning to read. Because she wasn’t able to communicate with other players she instead spent hours watching Stampy Cat’s popular YouTube videos, which serve as a Minecraft "how to" for beginners, and putting her own spin on challenges like constructing a roller coaster. Then, she went to Minecraft camp. At "Skyscrapers of Tomorrow," a weeklong summer program developed by the Chicago Architecture Foundation, Olive worked on a team—dubbed the Unicorns—that used Minecraft to design a skyscraper that would function as a towering vertical neighborhood. "It’s super fun because you can make whatever you want," Olive says. "We even added a pink street." The last day of camp, when all the teams presented their skyscrapers to parents and teachers, was by far Olive's favorite. "There was cookies! Everyone ate a cookie, I ate a brownie." "What I think she got out of the camp was the 94
ability to observe how the world is built and organized, and then bring that back into Minecraft," her mother says. This fall Minecraft, the blockbuster game acquired by Microsoft for $2.5 billion (KD 750 million) in 2014, is moving into classrooms with an education-specific edition geared toward elementary school students. Microsoft hopes to see teachers embrace the game as an entry point to lessons on computational thinking as well as traditional subjects like history, math, and science. To help teachers get started, the company has developed lesson plans around topics like the Temple of Artemis as a way to inspire creative applications for what is in many respects a remarkably free-form digital learning environment. In the meantime, educational organizations including the Chicago Architecture Foundation have been at the forefront of developing curriculum around Minecraft, which even in its mainstream format lends itself to teaching and learning. "The kids and parents love it," says Gabrielle Lyon, vice president of education and experience for the foundation. "The parents are so relieved—they feel like, my kid is on Minecraft all the time, I don’t know if they’re learning anything. They come here and they feel great that their children are developing skills and getting to be social, but also doing things that take them outside." Students in the weeklong camp programs that the foundation introduced in August spend time at
their computers, but also visit sites around Chicago in order to observe built environments with a critical eye and experience otherwise abstract architectural concepts, like pathways. On their first day, they measure the size of a Minecraft cube. "Students leave with a real idea of scale and context," Lyon says. "‘Read a building:’ we’re talking about materials, we’re talking about structures." So far, the foundation has introduced two variations on Minecraft camps, the skyscraper program and another called "Build a City" that emphasizes green space. Both run for five days, culminating in a 90-minute "showcase" that allows students to present their work. During the school year, the foundation plans to offer weekend workshops that use Minecraft to engage students in projects like repurposing historic buildings. LEGOs and other physical blocks play a supporting role in the Minecraft programs, and a central role in other classes and workshops. Across all tools and mediums, Lyon says, the foundation’s focus on design and critical thinking remains intact. "The technology is a means to an end. Minecraft works best when it’s the best tool to get the job done." Chicago parent Jennifer Goolsby says she saw that philosophy come together in her son’s experience. "They don’t even realize they’re learning about arches and trusses and domes," she says. "The hook is the technology." Of course, the learning extends far beyond the redstone walls.

UNCHARTED 4: A THIEF'S END REVIEW By bazaar staff
I know. I know it’s late, but… I have excuses. Good ones! Yes, Uncharted 4 came out at the start of May. But first of all, E3 took up the last two Geeks and Gamers columns; in addition to that, I had no time at all to play new games due to planning (and panicking ) for my wedding. Then there was the problem of my now wife. She is the PlayStation fanatic in our household and more than that, the biggest fan of all things Uncharted. Married life would not have got off to a good start if I had played her most anticipated game of the last 3 years either before or without her. So, upon returning from the honeymoon, we prepared snacks to see us through a marathon gaming session, put the disc into the console and settled in for the long haul. I must start by saying that Uncharted 4 is one of the best games I have ever played in my 25 years of gaming, and has taken a spot in my top 10 of all time (not an easy accomplishment, be assured). To try and show how good I found the game; usually, I try to skip the end credits to see what lies beyond them. If I find that I can’t, I get annoyed. In Uncharted 4, you cannot skip the end credits, but I sat through them not minding at all. They’re nothing special, just white text on black background. But every name on 96
the screen for those 10 minutes or so deserved to be there and to have your attention. That’s how much I, personally, appreciated the work that went into this masterpiece. That doesn’t mean it’s perfect, but what it does do right really plasters over the minor bad points. What are the bad points? For one, the game is a little short. If you don’t want to find all of the collectibles, and just follow the path to finish the game, you could do so in 12-15 hours. There are a few puzzles, and most are a little too easy to solve (for hardened gamers, at least). These are small grumbles however, and as the old saying goes, ‘’less is more’’. So what, in this reviewer’s humble opinion, makes it one of the best games ever? It’s been just under five years since the last installment of Uncharted, so the team at Naughty Dog has had a long time to develop and polish this, and that polish shows. The attention to detail is stunning, from the writing, following the characters' previous stories and history, the new storyline, to the visuals. You can visibly see that the characters have aged in the most subtle of ways. Not to mention the Easter eggs (hidden nods in the game to other things)…without spoilers, an early scene in the game between Nate and his wife that involves a small contest between them will leave you open mouthed and grinning insanely!
The environments are flawless, and sprawl for miles in the foreground with no lag or pop up, running at a constant 60fps. You are taken to multiple locations during the game, my personal favorite being rural Scotland. Having been there in real life, they completely nailed the look and feel of the area, including the weather! Such things in the game like water, cracks of light, the way mud builds on the wheels of Nates 4x4 as he drives, the leaves on trees, everything looks beautiful. The game works much like the previous ones, with solid controls in both combat and in general navigation. Climbing is a huge part of Uncharted and the game controls make it smooth to clamber up oversized objects and jump around with ease. It goes without saying that I recommend you buy this game if you have a PS4. If you don’t have a PS4, I even recommend you buy one especially for this game, it’s that good. But I also recommend, while playing that you explore everything it has to offer. Take your time to go and find the hidden treasures scattered around, interact with the optional environment objects, search around and just take in all the game has to offer. You will extend your playtime, but even better you will immerse yourself in the amazing story and world that Naughty Dog has created, and you owe that to yourself, as well as them.

LOVE WARRIOR
BORN TO RUN
by Glennon Doyle Melton
By Bruce Springsteen
Love Warrior is the story of one marriage, but it is also the story of the healing that is possible for any of us when we refuse to settle for good enough and begin to face pain and love head-on. This astonishing memoir reveals how our ideals of masculinity and femininity can make it impossible for a man and a woman to truly know one another - and it captures the beauty that unfolds when one couple commits to unlearning everything they've been taught so that they can finally, after thirteen years of marriage, commit to living true―to themselves and to each other. Love Warrior is a gorgeous and inspiring account of how we are born to be warriors: strong, powerful, and brave; able to confront the pain and claim the love that exists for us all. This chronicle of a beautiful, brutal journey speaks to anyone who yearns for deeper, truer relationships and a more abundant, authentic life.
In 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl’s halftime show. The experience was so exhilarating that Bruce decided to write about it. Born to Run will be revelatory for anyone who has ever enjoyed Bruce Springsteen, but this book is much more than a legendary rock star’s memoir. This is a book for workers and dreamers, parents and children, lovers and loners, artists, freaks, or anyone who has ever wanted to swim in the river of rock and roll. Rarely has a performer told his own story with such force and sweep. Like many of his songs (“Thunder Road,” “Badlands,” “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” “The River,” “Born in the U.S.A,” “The Rising,” and “The Ghost of Tom Joad,” to name just a few), Bruce Springsteen’s autobiography is written with the lyricism of a singular songwriter and the wisdom of a man who has thought deeply about his experiences.

HERE I AM By Jonathan Safran Foer
How do we fulfill our conflicting duties as father and husband; wife and mother; child and adult? How can we claim our own identities when our lives are linked so closely to others’? These are the questions at the heart of Jonathan Safran Foer’s first novel in eleven years. Unfolding over four tumultuous weeks in presentday Washington, D.C., Here I Am is the story of a fracturing family in a moment of crisis. As Jacob and Julia Bloch and their three sons are forced to confront the distances between the lives they think they want and the lives they are living, a catastrophic earthquake sets in motion a quickly escalating conflict in the Middle East. At stake is the meaning of home―and the fundamental question of how much aliveness one can bear. Showcasing the same high-energy inventiveness, hilarious irreverence, and emotional urgency that readers loved in his earlier work.
THE RED BANDANNA By Tom Rinaldi
One Sunday morning before church, when Welles Crowther was a young boy, his father gave him a red handkerchief for his back pocket. Welles kept it with him that day, and just about every day to come; it became a fixture and his signature. A standout athlete growing up in Upper Nyack, NY, Welles was also a volunteer at the local fire department, along with his father. Fresh from college, he took a Wall Street job on the 104th floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center, but the dream of becoming a firefighter with the FDNY remained. When the Twin Towers fell, Welles’s parents had no idea what happened to him. In the unbearable days that followed, they came to accept that he would never come home. But the mystery of his final hours persisted. Tom Rinaldi’s The Red Bandanna is about a fearless choice, about a crucible of terror and the indomitable spirit to answer it.

SWEET SOUR
A refined dining experience in Abu Alhasaniya By bazaar staff
Sometimes, you need to escape the city for a soulful dining experience that truly transports your senses. While we all love having the option of heading to the mall for some shopping then stopping by a reputable restaurant for a bite, we can’t deny the charming experience of dining at a remarkable dining-only location. This is what we found at Sweet Sour, located in Abu Alhasaniya’s Divonne dining complex. From an internationally inspired menu to impeccably finished interiors, a visit to Sweet Sour is a must! Sweet Sour first began as a homebusiness that revitalized the local market’s love for chocolate-dipped strawberries in 2012 where the tart yet sweet delight quickly soared in popularity, and upon partnering up with Gourmania Group, it has evolved into a fully-fledged café and lounge. First founded by Mohamad Akbar, Sweet Sour became the go-to business for mini sweets and chocolatedipped strawberries. While desserts might reign supreme in the minds of Sweet Sour’s visitors, our experience of their savory menu truly left us wanting more. But first, we need to set the scene at Sweet Sour. Imagined and executed by an Italian design team, the décor at Sweet Sour is lavish yet playful. The ceiling is clad with intricate damask designs and asymmetrical patterns, while an entire wall is covered in floor to ceiling subway-tile-style mirrors. By the patio windows, you’ll notice artful dessert structures elegantly displayed in clear acrylic boxes. We absolutely loved the chevrontiled floors, and the overall color theme of white and aqua blue salon chairs, marble gray tables and gold accents completes this stunning setting. Sweet Sour offers a diverse menu that will suit any occasion. Whether you’re after breakfast, a light salad, sandwiches and burgers, pastas or light bites, always leave room for dessert. Trust us, you won’t want to miss out on this main event. Before indulging in desserts, we sampled some of the delicious savory offerings at Sweet Sour, because life is never as sweet without the sour! We began with bread sticks coupled with labneh, olive and spicy avocado dips. This was swiftly followed by the Goat Cheese and Beets salad and the almond encrusted Halloumi. A true celebration of textures, we loved how the marinated beetroot in the salad was calmed by its minted yogurt 100
dressing. As for the Halloum, it was expertly prepared with a blend of almonds and spices and an accompanying aromatic tomato and olive dip. We also tried Sweet Sour’s signature Ravioli dish. Filled with creamy ricotta cheese and spinach, and finished with a tomato and fresh basil sauce, we knew we’d be craving dessert in no time. Soon enough, the friendly staff approached us with an appetizing plate of what we thought were colorful macaroons. To our pleasant surprise, what looked like
the cutest dessert were actually sliders. A Sweet Sour signature, the three colorful mini burgers were set on a beautiful marble stone serving plate, and we were dazzled by both the presentation and the juicy flavor of these sliders! Each with its own distinct topping, the Sliders trio includes crispy beef bacon, a classic offering and a slider topped off with caramelized onion and mushrooms. All of the dishes at Sweet Sour are artfully presented, giving your dining experience an added touch of refinement and panache.
Perhaps this is most exemplified by our dessert experience. Elegantly titled in their menu as ‘The Sweet Sour Delights’, we were truly blown away by how spectacular the desserts looked and tasted. Whether you’re craving cookie confections, molten cakes, or the mood strikes for a waffle, the dessert selection at Sweet Sour will please every palate. For our experience, we opted to go down the Oriental route. The Sticky Date Pudding is given a Middle Eastern twist, as the classic date and walnut cake is infused with cardamom for an aromatic and flavorful note, and the addition of gorgeous caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream completes this masterpiece. The Sweet Sour special, however, is a truly original creation. The traditional Gers Ogaili (a local favorite) is refined and reimagined as a cardamom and saffron infused fluffy sponge and is filled with saffron ice cream and sweet rehash (a delightfully sweet sesame paste), topped off with a hot milk-chocolate sauce. Embracing modernity yet celebrating tradition, the Sweet Sour special won our hearts and taste buds. If you’re after a sinful chocolate overdose, then we highly recommend the Molten Cake, or better yet, go for a Fondue! We also love the create your own waffles, crepes or pancakes dessert offering, where you choose your toppings and sauce to your own liking. Another standout for us included the Lotus and Lime Cheesecake—who knew that these two flavor profiles worked beautifully together? The slight tartness of the lime beautifully works with the indulgent, classic, sweet ginger-infused Lotus crumble and sauce. We absolutely love Sweet Sour’s journey so far. By creating an opulent lounge and café the original concept truly comes to life, like never before. Our visit showed us that the demand for those delightful chocolate-covered strawberry sweets is sharply on the rise. If anything, we were pleasantly surprised by the number of walk-in customers coming to Sweet Sour to place their orders for these confections, as well as mini mille-feuille gateaux. For your orders, you can customize these delicacies however you please. To end our incredible meal, we couldn’t leave before sampling the famous confections along with a side of piping hot espresso. We truly can’t wait to revisit Sweet Sour this winter, as the café lounge is preparing for an equally elegant and opulent outdoor seating area that will be absolutely perfect for days enjoyed outside with a cup of indulgent hot cocoa. Sweet Sour is located in Divonne in Abu Alhasaniya. For more information or to place your orders for their strawberry confections, please call 6047 7885 or 5581 9885. DAY BREAKS
By Green Day
By Rick Astley
By Norah Jones
Revolution Radio was recorded in Oakland, California, and produced by the band. Musically, the album is said to be “raw, visceral, and fearless – solidifying the band's reign as one of the leading voices in rock music” with lyrical themes that “address the complexities and uncertainties of modern day existence.” In August, Billy Joe Armstrong admitted he “freaked out” while writing "Bang Bang" as he wrote it from the perspective of a gunman. Armstrong also stated that the whole album is meant to reflect the current state of violence in the United States.
50 is the eighth studio album by English singer and songwriter Rick Astley. It is Astley's first studio album in more than 10 years, following Portrait. No trendy gimmicks, no clickbait, just Rick’s unique voice pouring forth. 50 marks the British soul man’s half-century milestone and he’s in a thoughtful mood, revealing hardearned truths on “Keep Singing” and “Angels on My Side”. Time has lent his voice a dusting of grit, which sounds great over the blues-rock riff of “Somebody Loves Me” and the showstopping piano ballad “Pieces“.
Norah Jones has announced that her new album Day Breaks, the follow-up to 2012's Little Broken Hearts, will arrive on October 7th. Jones also unveiled the new video for the album's tender first single "Carry On," featuring an elderly couple dancing in their kitchen while Jones serenades them from afar. The 12-track LP features nine new songs alongside covers of tracks by Neil Young ("Don't Be Denied"), Horace Silver and Duke Ellington (Jones previously covered Young at the annual Neil Fest all-star concert). Saxophone legend Wayne Shorter, organist Lonnie Smith and drummer Brian Blade also guest on the LP.

THIS HOUSE IS NOT FOR SALE
FOLLOWING MY INTUITION By Craig David
By Jimmy Eat World
New music from Bon Jovi is on the way, with the release of their upcoming album This House Is Not for Sale this month. Leader Jon Bon Jovi has said there was an old-school approach to This House Is Not for Sale, his 14th album with longtime members David Bryan and Tico Torres. “We were recording at different times and different rooms in the studio,” Bon Jovi said back in January. “That’s not happening anymore. We went back to the place [New York City’s Power Station] where we cut "Runaway" in 1982 – where I used to sweep the floor and fetch coffee.”
Craig David releases new album Following My Intuition, his first new album since Signed Sealed Delivered in 2010. The album includes the singles "When The Bassline Drops" featuring Big Narstie and Blonde collaboration "Nothing Like This". New single "Ain’t Giving Up" with Sigala has also just been released. The other guests on the album are Kaytranada and Lauren Faith, who both feature on "Got It Good". David said: “I’m back in that 16-year old-kid mode; hungry, passionate and making music that I’m truly proud of. I want to deliver the music that people have been asking for, for so long, following my intuition and coming from a great place.”
Jimmy Eat World are returning after a threeyear layoff in October with their ninth record, Integrity Blues. “It is about throwing away your default responses to life, accept[ing] life on the terms of life and becoming willing to accept the best any of us have is to be in the state of progress,” frontman Jim Adkins wrote about the album in a lengthy note on the band’s website. He concluded it by saying, “Integrity matters because if you let the answer of ‘Who do I need to be?’ inform your question ‘What should I do?’ … there just isn’t room for the negative cycle to get traction.”

SUPER MARIO RUN
HYPERLAPSE
VERNE: THE HIMALAYAS
DARKROOM
QUICKREPLY
SNOW
Thought to be only on the new iPhone, this will also be available for Android. This is Nintendo finally venturing into the mobile market, and their first attempt isn’t messing around. You can’t go wrong with a Mario game, and this particular one works much in the same way as Temple Run, or Subway Surfers. It’s an endless runner, where you have to guide Mario as far forward as possible in order to get the best score. It also has a battle mode, where you can compete against other players. Can’t wait for this one!
Google continues to help us discover the landscapes of the world with Verne: The Himalayas. This is the latest app from the experimental Google Creative Labs team and it invites you to explore the world's highest mountain range. You take control of Yeti named Verne to traverse the Himalayas and discover historical facts about the location. It makes use of Google Maps' 3D imagery to map the area and it's both an enjoyable and educational experience. Just be warned that the controls are a little tricky at first.
quickReply allows you to respond to messages without entering an app. This feature is becoming more prevalent – WhatsApp provides it and Android N will even allow you to reply straight from your lockscreen – but if you can’t wait for the functionality to come to other apps, install quickReply in the meantime. It works with many popular messaging apps (though SMS functionality is yet to be properly integrated), so if you use Skype, Telegram, Kik etc, quickReply will allow you to respond to messages without stopping what you're currently doing. Messages can be responded to via the notification shade but, sadly, replying from the lockscreen isn't supported.
Instagram might be best known as an endless stream of pictures of your friends' meals, but its new standalone video app Hyplerlapse aims to change that. It's a dead simple way to create time-lapse videos accompanied by an outstanding built-in image stabilization algorithm that can make shaky videos look steady enough you might think they were filmed with a professional rig. It just takes one tap to start recording, lets you pick your playback speed after, and easily shares your video to Instagram and Facebook. With few controls, the creativity really comes from how you use Hyperlapse.
Darkroom's most impressive feature is the ability to make curves adjustments, similar to Photoshop on the desktop. You can individually adjust the blacks, shadows, midtones, highlights, and whites of any image with a simple up or down slide of your finger. The app also allows you to adjust those characteristics across individual RGB channels; for example, you could increase the amount of blue in the shadows, or decrease the amount of green in the highlights. It's the app's first paid feature (with more to come later this year), and it's essential to the experience. The $2.99 price tag sounds steep, but it works great and is really fun to use.
Created in Asia, where Snapchat is banned, this app has really taken off amongst the selfie and filter obsessed generation. It takes Snapchats (arguably) best feature and, while admittedly rips it off (dog filter, flowers around head filter), also multiplies it tenfold. With a huge selection of already popular aswell as unique filters, 72 hour story mode, and a GIF creator, if this app gains more attention outside of Asia it could be the next big thing, very soon.

PLAYSTATION 4 PRO
With 4K TVs becoming more and more commonplace, it only makes sense that gamers want 4K graphics to match. That's exactly what the PlayStation 4 Pro will provide. A mid-generation update of the alreadypopular console, it has an upgraded CPU and GPU to let it support both 4K and HDR games. Most current PS4 titles will be able to upgrade to 4K via a simple patch, while newer titles will be developed to take full advantage of the new hardware. It also has a 1TB hard drive standard, will have 4K-compatible apps for services like Netflix and YouTube. Coming in November.
LENOVO YOGA BOOK
It runs Android, has a 10.1-inch touchscreen, and a software keyboard. Yet the Lenovo Yoga Book isn't exactly a tablet. Instead, it's a hybrid computing device, folding along its hinge to transform with ease. In tablet mode it acts just as you'd expect, while unfolding just a bit allows it to stand up, becoming a mini TV. Keep going and you'll be in laptop mode, where the Halo haptic keyboard magically appears, and folding it completely flat will put you in note saver mode, which lets you write on real paper, yet automatically transfers every scribble over the companion note app.

APPLE IPHONE 7
Let's face it: you know it's faster, and you already know the apps it runs. The biggest feature of the Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus — any new iPhone, really — is the camera. The 7 gets a 12 megapixel camera with optical image stabilization and a brighter f/1.8, six-element lens. Both models get a 7 megapixel FaceTime camera, but only the Plus gets the dual 12 megapixel camera system. One side has a wide-angle 28mm lens, while the second has a 56mm lens; this pairing allows for 2x optical zoom, 10x digital zoom, and a new Portrait mode that provides DSLR-like bokeh.
GARMIN VIRB ULTRA 30 CAMERA
Combining their GPS knowledge with a powerful sensor, the Garmin Virb Ultra 30 Camera lets you capture 4K video alongside tons of data. Using a combination of sensors, it records the distance, speed, and altitude of your adventures, while at the same time grabbing 30fps footage. A powerful microphone allows for voice control, a touchscreen LCD makes reviewing your shots easy, image stabilization keeps your cuts steady, and one-touch live streaming over Wi-Fi lets you share your adventures in real-time. Arrives with a rugged waterproof case.
RAUMFELD X ROSENTHAL PORCELAIN SPEAKERS
Porcelain is a naturally low resonance material, making it ideal for these Raumfeld x Rosenthal Porcelain Speakers. A collab between the highend audio and porcelain manufacturers, the speakers' teardrop shape optimizes the acoustics from the coaxial speakers, driven by a 160 watt Class D amp. Laying claim to the title of "first steaming speakers made from porcelain", it also has integrated Wi-Fi for app-controlled playback, as well as line-in, Ethernet, and USB inputs.
WORX SWITCHDRIVER
Even the most novice DIY'er knows the hassle of switching back and forth between a drill bit and a driver. The Worx Switchdriver makes the process easier than ever. It has a rotating head with two 1/4 inch chucks — one for your bit, and one for your driver. Since neither bit has to be removed, you can drill a hole, rotate the head, and sink the screw in a single step. Its 20V lithium battery provides roughly two hours of use per charge, and the integrated LED light lets you work anytime, day or night.

NESTLE TOLL HOUSE CAFÉ
Where desserts are celebrated every day of the year By bazaar staff
All it takes is one visit to the famous Nestle Toll House Cafe at Marina Crescent to truly appreciate the meaning of a wellmade dessert. It’s not by chance that the Nestle Toll House Café has risen to such glorious fame, their desserts alone are worthy of a standing ovation. Not only does the business rely on its relationship with customers to maintain the quality and amazing vibes at the café, but it’s also home to the infamous custom cookie-cake. With incredible creations and with the beautiful weather coming in, we’ll definitely be making our way to one of their many locations to enjoy a cookie or two! 108
We’ve all seen the Friends episode where Phoebe talks about her grandmother’s special cookie recipe and how it’s been lost. We all felt the pain of an excellent cookie recipe disappearing forever – only to discover that this sacred cookie recipe came with every bag of Nestle Toll House chocolate chips. Oh the joy and relief we felt when we found out we too had the recipe all along! And with the existence of the café today, we can have this super special cookie all the time – sans messy kitchens. The sheer passion driving the café is what makes every visit so phenomenal. What makes Nestle Toll House Café special is that they bake their desserts fresh daily. Going in thinking we’ll just sample cookies, our visit led us to uncover many other sweet treats that left us wanting so much more. With Nestle Toll House, your favorite goodies are easily accessible all across Kuwait. Because
it was a beautiful afternoon, we opted for the Marina Crescent location to end our day in the most indulgent of ways. Upon walking through the doors of Nestle Toll House, you’re instantly hit by a warm and fuzzy feeling. Perhaps it’s the mouthwatering scent of desserts that wafts through the entire space, or the comfortable sofas that make for the perfect quiet recluse. All in all, the Nestle Toll House Cafe offers the perfect morning, afternoon or evening escape where you can also grab your laptop or favorite book to get some much needed ‘me’ time. Imagine all of this goodness, with a wide array of incredible sweets to complete the experience. The mood beckoned for a dessert-filled experience so we decided to go all-out and sample almost everything at the cafe. Nothing
was about to stop us! Custom everything: With the Nestle Toll House Café you can customize your giant cookie, regular cookies, cakes and any of their refreshing drinks. Yes, you can totally add cookies, brownies or cupcakes to your drinks – YUM! Taking their customization game to another level, Nestle Toll House Café have packages for you to choose from. They even provide catering kiosks for parties! You can now have freshly baked Nestle Toll House cookies and desserts at any event you’re hosting straight from their catering kiosks. Alongside the drinks, you can find a selection of salads and small savory bites to get you through the day – but our main event was dessert, and dessert we had. To start off we tried their molten Bundt: Fudgy, chocolate goodness! Their Molten Chocolate Bundt and Turtle Molten Bundt are beautifully gooey and delicious. The turtle Bundt had added crunch from roast peanuts and a creamy caramel sauce. Next on our list was the homey Original Apple Pie. Flaky and glorious, this all-American creation was delightfully delectable. Then there was the Raspberry with Choco Cheese Brulee – their own original take on a cheesecake and crème brulee – which was absolutely exquisite and creamy. Their brownies were a delight – choosing between the KitKat and Turtle options was difficult, so we had both! Moving more toward cookies, we tried their specialty Chocolate Coconut Macaroon and Coconut Macaroon – enchantingly coconuty and palatable! For those looking for a quick and deliciously sweet breakfast-on-the-go, treat yourself to their fluffy Krispy Treats [chocolate covered or not] or one of their delicious muffins! Light and airy, your sweet tooth will thank you. If you’re taking your child out for a quick dessert, treat them to a Cookie-On-A-Stick! Yummy and efficient if you ask us. But their absolute must-haves are their cookie creations. Coming to us in full-sized regular cookie and their mini versions, you can enjoy as many as you’d like! Chocolate-chip, Peanut Butter, White Chocolate Macadamia, Rainbow, Triple Chocolate – the list goes on and their creations keep getting better. There’s a cookie suited for every taste and everyone can enjoy their favorite variation of a classic Nestle Toll House dessert.

REEBOK CLASSICS OFFERS AN ARTISTIC TOUCH WITH ITS SEPTEMBER COLLABORATIONS Reebok delved into the world of ink in a fresh collaboration with talent tattooist from St. Petersburg, Sasha Masuik. It is very important in tattoo art because each person wants to be unique and express his/her individuality.” Drawing down from the mandala, the heel tab features a deboss of the original mandala pattern, and the gold deboss of the quarter logo adds that strong pop of color. Three Between the Finger Rings give pride of place to hard stones, while a diamond-set pendant and matching earstuds display varying tones of gold. Encapsulating ancestral savoir-faire, the Perlée collection’s border of gentle and sparkling golden beads is now associated with one of Van Cleef & Arpels’ emblematic signatures: the Between the Finger Ring. With their twin motifs linked by an open ring, these pieces adorn the hand thanks to a curvaceous duet of cabochons – one in hard stone, the other in gold set with diamonds. Each ring is enhanced by a precious dialogue: yellow gold accentuates the singular beauty of malachite, white gold reveals the luminosity of turquoise, while gentle pink gold echoes the radiant color of carnelian. These precious combinations are magnified by a border of golden beads, which unfurls around each cabochon in two or three rows. Matching these creations, a pendant and earstuds reinterpret the diamond-set cabochon in yellow, white and pink gold. Van Cleef & Arpels is located in Kuwait at The Avenues and Sahlia Complex. VIRGO AUG 23 – SEP 22
TAURUS APR 20 – MAY 20
Speaking up is the only way to make others aware of your frustrations. Keeping it all bottled in won’t help one bit. A flirtation at work could be a recipe for disaster. Know what you’re getting into before flashing that smile. Leo is involved. A good time to get in touch with old friends.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder, especially if you’re involved with Scorpio. A decision you made several months ago has an effect on you this month. A problem that arises will be a blessing in disguise. Expect delays. Leo causes you frustration this month.
SCORPIO OCT 23 – NOV 22
GEMINI MAY 21 – JUN 21
Time spent alone gives you the opportunity to think through problems. You’ll be able to come to terms with a situation that has been troubling you for some time. If you’re in a management position, you may find that it’s lonely at the top. Change is imminent in a romance.
A Taurus from your past resurfaces. You’ll find the bull a little deeper than you remember. A mid-month break from your busy schedule brightens your mood. Don’t be afraid to give in to relaxation. It’s really not so bad! Scorpio plays a role. Decisive action is key this month.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22
A career opportunity could come your way when you least expect it. Before discounting it at face value, take a deeper look. There may be more than meets the eye. If a major purchase is in the works, be sure to shop around. Don’t write out any check unless you’re getting a good deal.
A great month! Something you worked hard for and wanted for some time is finally yours. Don’t be afraid to celebrate in a big way. More free time is on the way, so don’t be afraid to take advantage. An especially romantic weekend is in store. Taurus plays a role. Finances look good.
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 19
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 22
Look back to the past to help fix a problem today. You’ll find that time has a way of repeating itself. Scorpio offers some words of wisdom. New romance should be avoided this month – especially if a Virgo is in the picture. An introspective mood leads you to answers.
Keep a tight hold on valuables or something you love could be lost. This is especially true if you’re traveling this month. Try to make the best of a bad situation. Negative thinking makes matters worse. Staying focused helps you keep pace with a busy workload.
LIBRA
SEP 23 – OCT 22 Before searching far for something you need, take a look right in front of you. It may not seem so obvious at first, but it will be crystal clear in time. A show of independence will work wonders in a romance – especially with Scorpio. An unusual source tells you of an investment opportunity. Good news comes in threes.
AQUARIUS JAN 20 – FEB 18 A friend’s offer of help may not be totally selfless. There could be some motives you’re not totally aware of. If you’re looking for a new job, this could be a lucky time. Be sure to explore all options. Social invitations are more abundant now. Don’t be afraid to have some fun.
PISCES FEB 19 – MAR 20 Finances will become an issue –especially if you have moved or taken on additional expenses recently. Careful budgeting will get you through. A “to-do” list helps keep you organized at work. Social activities may have to take a back seat to family obligations this month.
ARIES MAR 21 – APR 19 A “Catch 22” situation arises and causes you frustration early in the month. Creative thinking could turn things around, however. Don’t be afraid to try the unusual. A Libra friend shows you the positive side. Cynicism slows you down. Financial problems may arise later in the month.
