WELCOME CROESO Welcome to the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales 2014-15 concert season, your guide to the most comprehensive, virtuosic and exciting classical music series in Wales. As the Orchestra’s new Director, I have had a whirlwind first few months getting to grips with our incredible range of activity. For the new season we’ve combined everything into one brochure, so you too can see exactly what we will be doing, in concert, in the studio, on the road and behind the scenes. It’s an impressive range of activity in the community and really underlines our role as Wales’s national orchestra. From Bangor to Swansea, Aberystwyth to Cardiff, BBC NOW is at the heart of cultural life across the country, and we’re also proud to be part of so many wonderful festivals, in Fishguard, St Asaph, Bangor and the Vale of Glamorgan, to name but a few. And our national pride doesn’t stop there; our performances at the BBC Proms allow us to showcase to the world the excellence produced in Wales and we look forward to flying the flag once again this summer. A BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales event is more than just a concert, and this season we launch Discover More, a series of talks, events, open rehearsals and more, all geared to get you closer to the music. We’ve kept back some particularly special moments for our subscribers, of course. If you want to know more about the BBC NOW subscriber scheme turn to page 23 for Cardiff and page 35 for Swansea, or call the Audience Line on 0800 052 1812. I look forward to seeing you in the stalls!

1 I grew up in the opera house, transfixed by what I saw and heard, so the BBC NOW ‘Voice’ season is an incredibly exciting prospect for me. We open the season with Strauss’s Four Last Songs sung by captivating soprano Ann Petersen, and close with Mahler’s ethereal second symphony with wonderful soloists, Klara Ek and Jennifer Johnston. Of course it would not be a vocal season without the talents of the BBC National Chorus of Wales, who perform Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius with Mark Wigglesworth, and Haydn’s The Creation with Martyn Brabbins. As well as our festive celebrations at Christmas and our traditional St David’s Day Gala (with none other than Bryn Terfel leading us in song!), I am proud to be joining the Orchestra at BBC Cardiff Singer of the World in June 2015. We also look forward to returning to our Swansea home at the Brangwyn Hall, and what better way to celebrate than with a piano series featuring exceptional soloists Benjamin Grosvenor, Igor Levit and Stephen Hough? My fellow Scandinavian, B Tommy Andersson, takes up the post of Composer-in-Association for the season and brings some contemporary repertoire to the fore of the Welsh classical scene. I have known Tommy’s work for a long time, and have been waiting for the right moment to share it with our audiences; in the opening and closing concerts in St David’s Hall, as well as a composer portrait in BBC Hoddinott Hall. I have only mentioned a few of the many highlights for the coming year, so I invite you to read on, and I look forward to joining you for another year of spectacular music. See you there!
Deuthum i oed yn y tyˆ opera, a’r hyn a welwn ac a glywn yn fy nghyfareddu, felly mae tymor ‘Llais’ newydd Cerddorfa’r BBC yn rhywbeth rwy’n edrych ymlaen ato’n llawn cyffro byw. Cychwynnwn y tymor â Phedair Cân Olaf Strauss a ganir gan y soprano swynol Ann Petersen, a down i ben yn ail symffoni nefolaidd Mahler gyda’r unawdwyr gwych, Klara Ek a Jennifer Johnston. Wrth reswm pawb, ni fyddai’n dymor lleisiol heb ddoniau Corws Cenedlaethol Cymreig y BBC, sy’n perfformio The Dream of Gerontius Elgar gyda Mark Wigglesworth, a’r Creu gan Haydn gyda Martyn Brabbins. Ar ben ein dathliadau adeg y Nadolig a’n Gala Dydd Gwˆyl Dewi traddodiadol (a Bryn Terfel, neb llai, yn arwain y canu!), rwy’n falch o fod yn ymuno â’r Gerddorfa yn BBC Canwr y Byd Caerdydd ym mis Mehefin 2015. Edrychwn ymlaen hefyd at ddychwelyd i Neuadd Brangwyn, ein cartref yn Abertawe, a pha ffordd well o ddathlu hyn nag â chyfres piano sy’n cynnwys yr unawdwyr eithriadol Benjamin Grosvenor, Igor Levit a Stephen Hough? Fy nghydwladwr o Lychlynnwr, B Tommy Andersson, ddaw i swydd y Cyfansoddwr Cysylltiedig am y tymor a daw â repertoire cyfoes i’r blaen ym myd clasurol Cymru. Rwy’n gyfarwydd ers tro â gwaith Tommy, a bûm yn aros yr union funud i’w rannu â’n cynulleidfaoedd, yn y cyngherddau agoriadol a therfynol yn Neuadd Dewi Sant, yn ogystal â phortread cyfansoddwr yn Neuadd Hoddinott y BBC. Dyrnaid yn unig y soniais amdanynt o blith pigion gwych y flwyddyn sydd i ddod, felly cofiwch ddal i ddarllen, ac edrychaf ymlaen at ddod atoch chi i flwyddyn eto o gerddoriaeth aruthrol. Welwn ni chi yno!

Our 2014-15 season at St David’s Hall contains all of the drama, excitement and magic that you can expect from a BBC National Orchestra of Wales concert: from well-loved classics like Holst’s The Planets and Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, to dynamic and contemporary compositions by Mark Bowden and B Tommy Andersson. The season is book-ended with concerts driven by Thomas Søndergård’s musical passions: opening with B Tommy Andersson’s The Garden of Delights and concluding with his Satyricon, with additions of R. Strauss’s Four Last Songs and music by Sibelius, this time his second symphony. A concert of classics sees Thomas working with Benjamin Grosvenor for the first time and our season finale will continue Thomas’s run of spectacular Mahler performances, with Symphony No 2 and brought to life by soloists Klara Ek and Jennifer Johnston. Klara and Jennifer are just two of the incredible performers taking part in our Voice season. Our St David’s Day celebration will reach new heights in 2015 as we are joined by the incomparable Bryn Terfel and, of course, our very own Grammy-nominated BBC National Chorus of Wales. We explore the mystery of creation through two contrasting interpretations, Haydn’s original masterpiece, and the world premiere of Resident Composer Mark Bowden’s collaboration with Welsh poet Owen Sheers. Put simply, there is something for everyone at St David’s Hall this season, so read on, explore and we’ll see you in the hall.

THE VOICE A CELEBRATION OF THE VOICE, FROM THE LAND OF SONG In the lead up to BBC Cardiff Singer of the World in 2015 we are thrilled to be bringing a cornucopia of international vocal force to Wales. From oratorios to arias, symphonic to solo, we will explore the voice in its many guises. Between October and June we will be visited by an array of phenomenal soloists, and we are truly delighted to welcome Wales’s finest baritone Bryn Terfel, who will celebrate Welsh song in his own magnificent way for St David’s Day. All this is in addition to our own Grammy-nominated BBC National Chorus of Wales who will perform Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius and Haydn’s The Creation, and of course lead us in song for Christmas and St David’s Day. June 2015 sees BBC Cardiff Singer of the World return to St David’s Hall, for what is set to be another magnificent display of operatic opulence. Singers from across the globe are already applying and auditioning, hoping that they can follow in the footsteps of the 2013 winner Jamie Barton: “I want to thank the incredibly warm people of Wales. You opened your arms to 20 of us from around the world, and I think I can speak for us all in saying thank you for the memories! I cannot wait to visit you again, and I hope that day is soon!“

FOUR LAST SONGS WITH GYDA SØNDERGÅRD B Tommy Andersson The Garden of Delights ◆ Gardd y Mwynderau R. Strauss Four Last Songs ◆ Pedair Cân Olaf Sibelius Symphony No 2 ◆ Symffoni Rhif 2
Conductor • Arweinydd Thomas Søndergård Soprano Ann Petersen Sibelius’s Second Symphony, one of his most fiercely nationalistic works, is the highlight of Principal Conductor Thomas Søndergård’s first concert of the season. It’s paired with B Tommy Andersson’s The Garden of Delights, which takes inspiration from a painting by the Dutch artist Bosch. In between, Danish soprano Ann Petersen sings the last four songs by Richard Strauss, which hint at his foreboding illness and consequent death, matched with his own climactic creative surge.
Gellid dadlau bod Ail Symffoni Sibelius yn un o’i weithiau mwyaf ffyrnig o genedlgarol a dyna uchafbwynt cyngerdd cynta’r Prif Arweinydd Thomas Søndergård y tymor yma. THE DREAM OF GERONTIUS Elgar The Dream of Gerontius Conductor • Arweinydd Mark Wigglesworth Tenor Andrew Kennedy Mezzo Anna Larsson Bass • Baswr Neal Davies BBC National Chorus of Wales • Corws Cenedlaethol Cymreig y BBC Elgar was always fascinated by the poem by John Henry Newman, depicting the journey of Gerontius from his deathbed to his judgement before God. In this masterpiece, the Chorus play multiple roles in the story – as angels, friends, souls in purgatory, and even demons. English tenor Andrew Kennedy sings the role of Gerontius and Swedish soprano Anna Larsson plays the Angel, guiding Gerontius on his journey.
Roedd cerdd John Henry Newman, yn darlunio taith Gerontius o’i wely angau i’w farnu gerbron Duw, bob amser yn cyfareddu Elgar. CREATION Y CREU “FROM THE CELESTIAL VAULTS PURE HARMONY DESCENDS ON RAVISHED EARTH.” Part III, Haydn’s The Creation Y Drydedd Ran, Y Creu gan Haydn Over the years, many composers have been influenced by the origins of the universe – with Haydn famously taking inspiration from Genesis in his Creation oratorio. In the opening, The Representation of Chaos, Haydn uses dissonance that, although unremarkable to modern audiences, was shocking to 18th century listeners. When the bass soloist opens with the first words of the Bible, however, harmony is restored – and the work takes listeners on a journey through the six days of creation, and subsequently the story of Adam and Eve. Haydn’s Creation is also influenced by his experience with Herschel’s telescope. As the Orchestra’s Resident Composer Mark Bowden explains: “The opening section of The Creation refers to the representation of chaos; this might have been an idea from Herschel who explained to Haydn how the stars formed. Haydn was one of the few non-scientists to look through Herschel’s telescope to see as far as anybody had ever seen into the heavens.” Science, however, has come a long way since The Creation was written. This season sees Mark Bowden collaborate with Welsh writer Owen Sheers to create a new work depicting the origins of the universe – entitled A Violence of Gifts – taking the latest scientific research from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN as inspiration. This project is also supported by the Jerwood Foundation. As Owen described to the Arts@CERN programme, “In the very first conversations, when Mark mentioned that this would be to some extent related to Haydn’s Creation, I was aware that he was responding to the Biblical narrative of the Creation. Moreover, we discussed about The Planets by Holst and the way in which his work reflects on how the planets are represented in Roman myths”. Mark and Owen arranged to spend a couple of days at the Large Hadron Collider for research, to get a clear sense of the character of scientific narrative. Owen says “My mind was constantly stretched between the extremes of scale; talking about the universe and then about the Quark Gluon Plasma.” The Creation theme continues into our BBC Hoddinott Hall season, with three different representations. Rebel’s Les Éléments uses dissonance to represent chaos, before the Orchestra depicts the elements of earth, wind, air and fire; Milhaud’s La création du monde takes inspiration from African folk mythology; and Ginastera’s Popol Vuh is a ballet based on Mayan beliefs, as described by ancient manuscripts.
Dros y blynyddoedd dylanwadodd dechreuad y bydysawd ar gyfansoddwyr lawer ac fel sydd hysbys Genesis a ysbrydolodd Haydn yn ei oratorio’r Creu. Yn y dechrau, The Representation of Chaos, defnyddia Haydn anghyseinedd, fawr i gynulleidfaoedd modern synnu ato ond roedd yn ysgytiol i wrandawyr y ddeunawfed ganrif. Pan gychwynna’r unawdydd bas â geiriau cyntaf y Beibl, fodd bynnag, daw cytgord drachefn - a’r gwaith yn mynd â’r gwrandawyr ar daith drwy chwe diwrnod y creu, ac wedyn stori Adda ac Efa. Dylanwad arall ar Y Creu Haydn oedd ei brofiad gyda thelesgop Herschel. Fel yr eglura Cyfansoddwr Preswyl y Gerddorfa Mark Bowden: “Mae adran agoriadol Y Creu yn cyfeirio at ddarlunio anhrefn; efallai mai syniad gan Herschel oedd hwn, a eglurodd i Haydn sut y ffurfir y sêr. Haydn oedd un o’r ychydig o bobol oedd heb fod yn wyddonwyr a edrychodd drwy delesgop Herschel a gweld cyn belled ag a welodd neb erioed i’r ffurfafen.” Ond cerddodd gwyddoniaeth ymhell ers sgrifennu’r Creu. Y tymor yma gwelir cydweithio Mark Bowden â’r llenor o Gymro Owen Sheers i greu gwaith newydd yn portreadu dechreuad y bydysawd o’r enw A Violence of Gifts - a ysbrydolwyd gan yr ymchwil wyddonol ddiweddaraf o’r Gwrthdrawydd Hadronau Mawr yn CERN. Cefnogir y fenter yma hefyd gan Sefydliad Jerwood. Ys dywedodd Owen wrth raglen Arts@CERN, “Yn y sgyrsiau cyntaf un, pan soniodd Mark y byddai hyn i ryw raddau ynghlwm â’r Creu gan Haydn, gwyddwn ei fod yn ymateb i hanes y creu yn ôl y Beibl. At hynny buom yn trafod The Planets gan Holst a’r ffordd y mae ei waith yn myfyrio uwch ddarlunio’r planedau mewn mythau Rhufeinig.” Trefnodd Mark ac Owen dreulio deuddydd yn y Gwrthdrawydd Hadronau Mawr i ymchwilio, i gael dirnadaeth glir o anian naratif gwyddonol. Meddai Owen “Ymestynnid fy meddwl byth a hefyd rhwng eithafion graddfa, yn sôn am y bydysawd ac wedyn am y Plasma Cwarc a Glwon.” Bydd thema’r Creu yn dal i fynd yn ein tymor yn Neuadd Hoddinott y BBC ar dair gwedd wahanol. Defnyddia Les Éléments Rebel anghyseinedd i gynrychioli anhrefn, cyn i’r Gerddorfa ddarlunio elfennau’r ddaear, y gwynt, awyr a thân; ysbrydolwyd La création du monde Milhaud gan fytholeg gwerin Affrica; a ballet ydi Popol Vuh Ginastera wedi’i seilio ar gredoau’r Maiaid, yn ôl disgrifiadau llawysgrifau hynafol.

Taking collective inspiration from Genesis, the Psalms, John Milton’s epic poem, Paradise Lost, and Handel’s Messiah, The Creation is a work of musical invention, a sensational, biblical homage to our living world.
“Pan feddyliaf am Dduw, ni allaf ond ysgrifennu cerddoriaeth lawen,” meddai Joseph Haydn pan gychwynnodd ar yr orchest gyfansoddi roedd llawer yn ei hystyried ei gampwaith. Ysbrydolwyd Y Creu gan Genesis, y Salmau, arwrgerdd John Milton, Paradise Lost, a Messiah Handel ar y cyd ac mae’n waith o ddyfeisgarwch cerddorol, yn deyrnged Feiblaidd ysblennydd i’n byd byw.

It’s paired with B Tommy Andersson’s Satyricon, a piece inspired by the tales of three young men in Ancient Rome. Written by the Latin author Petronius, it chronicles the amusing and sometimes risqué adventures of the lead character Encolpius. The rhythmic and extroverted music paints a picture of the scene, ending with, in the composer’s words, “a grotesque dance, wild and noisy”.

We welcome him back to Swansea for his first collaboration with Thomas Søndergård, and a performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 1. “I’m particularly looking forward this concert, which has a truly classical air, with Haydn’s Symphony No 28 and Mozart’s Symphony No 41, ‘Jupiter’.” Thomas Søndergård
Byth ers iddo ymddangos ar Cerddor Ifanc y BBC yn 2004, pan oedd yn ddim ond un mlwydd ar ddeg, mae’r pianydd ifanc o Brydain Benjamin Grosvenor yn syfrdanu cynulleidfaoedd drwy’r byd yn grwn. TCHAIKOVSKY & SHOSTAKOVICH Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No 1 • Concerto Piano Rhif 1 Shostakovich Symphony No 10 • Symffoni Rhif 10
Conductor • Arweinydd Thomas Søndergård Piano Igor Levit For the second concert in our piano series, we welcome Igor Levit for Tchaikovsky’s thrillingly romantic first piano concerto. Little did Tchaikovsky know, when composing its recognisable opening chords, that he’d created a work that would become the first classical song to sell a million records.
Ar ail noson ein cyfres piano, rhown groeso i Igor Levit ar gyfer concerto piano cyntaf gwefreiddiol o ramantaidd Tchaikovsky. Bychan a wyddai Tchaikovsky, pan oedd yn sgrifennu ei gordiau agoriadol trawiadol, iddo greu gwaith a ddeuai’r gân glasurol gyntaf i werthu miliwn o recordiau.
Shostakovich’s tenth symphony is considered by most to be a depiction of Stalin’s rule of Russia. It is testament to the composer’s legacy of music that chronicles one of the most turbulent reigns in recent history, inspiring in its ability to find optimism in the bleakest of situations.
Mae’r rhan fwyaf o bobol yn ystyried mai darlun o deyrnasiad Stalin yn Rwsia ydi Degfed Symffoni Shostakovich. Mae’n dyst i gynhysgaeth y cyfansoddwr o gerddoriaeth sy’n croniclo un o’r teyrnasiadau mwyaf terfysglyd mewn hanes diweddar, sy’n ysbrydoli o ran gallu cael gobaith yn y sefyllfaoedd llymaf.

VIVE LA SWANSEA VIVE L’ABERTAWE Ravel Boléro Lalo Symphonie Espagnole Saint-Saëns Symphony No 3 • Symffoni Rhif 3, ‘Organ’ Conductor • Arweinydd Xian Zhang Violin • Ffidil Chloë Hanslip Organ Thomas Trotter Exceptional young violinist Chloë Hanslip returns to the Orchestra alongside conductor Xian Zhang, as we take a musical journey through France, with a hint of Spanish influence. Ravel’s Boléro sets the scene perfectly, with its stirring rhythms and atmospheric melody. Chloë will take to the platform for Edouard Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole and we finish with Saint-Saëns Symphony No 3. On the composition of his third symphony Saint-Saëns proclaimed “what I have here accomplished, I will never achieve again”, anticipating his final journey into the symphonic form, and one which encapsulated all that he was as a musician, most notably with his addition of the organ to composition.
Daw’r ffidler ifanc eithriadol Chloë Hanslip yn ei hôl at y Gerddorfa ochr yn ochr â’r arweinydd Xian Zhang pan awn ar daith gerddorol drwy Ffrainc ac arni arlliw o ddylanwad Sbaen. Mae Boléro Ravel a’i rythmau gwefreiddiol a’i alaw llawn awyrgylch yn creu’r olygfa i’r dim. Chloë fydd ar lwyfan yn Symphonie Espagnole Edouard Lalo a down i ben yn Nhrydedd Symffoni Saint-Saëns. Pan gyfansoddodd ei drydedd symffoni meddai Saint-Saëns ar goedd “ni chyflawnaf fyth eto’r hyn a gyflawnais yma”, yn argoeli ei hynt olaf yn y ffurf symffonig, hynt a grynhodd ei holl hanfod fel cerddor, yn anad dim ychwanegu’r organ at y cyfansoddiad.

BEETHOVEN & BRUCKNER Beethoven Piano Concerto No 3 • Concerto Piano Rhif 3 Bruckner Symphony No 8 • Symffoni Rhif 8 Conductor • Arweinydd Thomas Søndergård Piano Stephen Hough The exhilarating Stephen Hough returns to the Brangwyn Hall for our season finale, alongside Beethoven’s third piano concerto – one of Thomas Søndergård’s favourite works. Stephen’s performances have gained a glowing reputation for brilliance and elegance, and we eagerly await his visit. We complete the season with Bruckner’s intense final symphony, his eighth. Bruckner didn’t live to complete his ninth symphony, but in his intense and tumultuous eighth he wrote some of his most breathtaking music. Fel chwa o awyr iach daw Stephen Hough yn ei ôl i Neuadd Brangwyn at ddiweddglo ein tymor, yn Nhrydydd Concerto Piano Beethoven - un o hoff weithiau Thomas Søndergård. Mae canmol mawr ar Stephen am draddodi perfformiadau disglair a chain ac edrychwn ymlaen yn frwd at ei ymweliad. Terfynwn y tymor â Symffoni olaf ddwys Bruckner, ei wythfed. Ni fu fyw Bruckner i gwblhau ei nawfed symffoni, ond yn ei wythfed ddwys a therfysglyd sgrifennodd beth o’i gerddoriaeth fwyaf syfrdanol.

t is always intriguing to cross between art forms, to see what one can offer the other and what new and creative ideas can flourish. So when it comes to celebrating the life of Dylan Thomas, we have a wonderful opportunity to explore his influence on music, both within his lifetime and through his inspirational legacy. In 2014, we will perform music by two contrasting figures: one, a friend of the poet, the other, a composer hugely influenced by Dylan’s poetry.
JOHN CORIGLIANO:
DANIEL JONES SYMPHONY NO 4:
A DYLAN THOMAS TRILOGY
IN MEMORY OF DYLAN THOMAS
Composer John Corigliano first encountered Dylan’s poetry in 1959 while a student. He was ‘irresistibly drawn to translate his music into mine’.
Daniel Jenkyn Jones remains one of Wales’ most acclaimed composers. A close friend of Dylan Thomas, they were part of the same group of artists who would meet in the Kardomah café in Swansea. As well as dedicating his fourth symphony to his friend, Jones’ memoir was entitled My Friend Dylan Thomas and he edited a collection of his poetry in 1972.
The composition of this oratorio was a long and evolving process, as Corigliano explained: ‘Thomas’ poems have reappeared in my life precisely when they have felt most autobiographical and just when I needed to write exactly the music they have evoked.’ The first version of the piece used three poems: Poem on his Birthday, Fern Hill and Poem in October. The premiere took place in 1976, but after revisiting the work he felt it to be missing a chapter, and so the amended 1999 revision was premiered including music set to Author’s Prologue.

ae wastad yn ddiddorol croesi ffurfiau ar gelfyddyd, i weld beth gall y naill ei gynnig i’r llall a sut gall syniadau newydd a chreadigol ffynnu. Felly, a ninnau’n dathlu bywyd Dylan Thomas, mae gennym gyfle ardderchog i ystyried ei ddylanwad ar gerddoriaeth, yn ystod ei oes a thrwy ei etifeddiaeth ysbrydoledig. Yn 2014, byddwn yn perfformio cerddoriaeth gan ddau ffigwr go wahanol: y naill yn ffrind i’r bardd, a’r llall yn gyfansoddwr y cafodd barddoniaeth Dylan ddylanwad mawr arno.

SYMFFONI RHIF 4 DANIEL JONES:
A DYLAN THOMAS TRILOGY
ER COF AM DYLAN THOMAS
Daeth y cyfansoddwr John Corigliano ar draws barddoniaeth Dylan gyntaf yn 1959 tra oedd yn fyfyriwr. Cafodd ei ‘hudo i drosi ei gerddoriaeth ef yn rhan o fy ngherddoriaeth innau’.
Daniel Jenkyn Jones yw un o gyfansoddwyr mwyaf llwyddiannus Cymru hyd heddiw. Roedd yn ffrind i Dylan Thomas, ac arferai’r ddau fod yn rhan o’r un grwˆ p o artistiaid a fyddai’n cwrdd yng nghaffi Kardomah yn Abertawe. Yn ogystal â chyflwyno ei bedwaredd symffoni i’w ffrind, teitl hunangofiant Jones oedd My Friend Dylan Thomas a golygodd gasgliad o’i farddoniaeth yn 1972.
Roedd y broses o gyfansoddi’r oratorio hon yn un hir ac esblygol, fel yr esboniodd Corigliano: ‘Ailymddangosodd cerddi Dylan yn fy mywyd ar yr union adeg y gallwn uniaethu â nhw fwyaf ac yn union pan oedd angen i fi ysgrifennu’r union gerddoriaeth a ddeilliodd ohonynt’. Defnyddiodd dair cerdd yn y fersiwn gyntaf: Poem on his Birthday, Fern Hill a Poem in October. Perfformiwyd y darn cyntaf yn 1976, ond ar ôl mynd yn ôl at y gwaith, teimlai bod pennod ar goll, ac felly perfformiwyd y darn wedi’i ddiwygio gyntaf yn 1999 ac roedd yn cynnwys cerddoriaeth a oedd yn seiliedig ar Author’s Prologue.

BBC Hoddinott Hall is our home in Cardiff Bay, where we rehearse, record and perform in front of a live audience. We love welcoming audiences into the studio, to join us to explore music together and to experience such variety and breadth of repertoire. In this year’s season at BBC Hoddinott Hall, we’re welcoming some new faces to the BBC NOW podium, including Stefan Asbury and Pablo Gonzalez; whilst also welcoming back Anu Tali, Olari Elts and Michael Francis. We’re also showcasing upcoming talent from BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artists scheme, and look forward to working with pianists Zhang Zuo and Louis Schwizgebel, violinist Elena Urioste, and guitarist Sean Shibe. With the Orchestra on hand to guide you through unfamiliar works, you can trust us to introduce you to music you may grow to love. You’ll get a chance to hear little-known gems including works by Zemlinsky, De Falla, and Langgaard, and some familiar favourites, including piano concertos by Ravel, and music by Korngold and Walton. BBC Hoddinott Hall is the perfect space for us to explore contemporary music together – look out for our Composer Portraits of Thierry Escaich and our new Composer-inAssociation, B Tommy Andersson; and on 20 January, B Tommy Andersson conducts the Orchestra for the first time, with a programme of music from his native Scandinavia. Whether you’re looking for the latest new music from around the world, or to be entertained by rarely-performed classics from the archive, BBC Hoddinott Hall is the place to discover something new.

THE SCANDINAVIAN CONNECTION With sparse, picturesque landscapes at the edges of Europe, Wales and Scandinavia have always seemed to have a spiritual connection despite the distance between the two. This season we welcome the Swedish composer B Tommy Andersson to Wales, who becomes our Composer-inAssociation who will work with the Orchestra throughout the year. B Tommy first met Thomas whilst working as a conductor, and while Thomas was timpanist with the Royal Danish Opera. “He’s such a fantastic musician”, B Tommy says of Thomas,
“He is really intensely engaged in the music-making, and he is almost merciless to himself when it comes to learning the score properly, and to try to understand the intentions of the composer.” Amongst B Tommy’s works performed in Cardiff will be The Garden of Delights, opening our St David’s Hall season on Friday 3 October, which takes influence from Bosch’s painting The Garden of Earthly Delights. He describes: “It’s a stunning picture - it’s so huge, so modern in many ways. My piece is not really trying to tell the story of the picture; it’s just inspired by the atmospheres, the turbulence and energy.”
LAW YN LLAW Â LLYCHLYN Ar ymylon Ewrop, a’u tirweddau yn llwm ond yn hardd, mae rhyw gysylltiad ysbrydol erioed rhwng Cymru a Llychlyn serch y pellter rhyngddynt. Y tymor yma rhown groeso i Gymru i’r cyfansoddwr o Sweden B Tommy Andersson, ein darpar Gyfansoddwr Cysylltiedig a fydd y gweithio gyda’r Gerddorfa drwy’r flwyddyn gron. Pan oedd yn gweithio fel arweinydd a thra oedd Thomas yn dympanydd gydag Opera Brenhinol Denmarc y cyfarfu B Tommy gyntaf â Thomas. “Mae’n gerddor mor wych,” medd B Tommy am Thomas, “Mae’n ymgolli’n llwyr yn y cerddora, ac o ran dysgu’r sgôr yn iawn a cheisio deall bwriadau’r cyfansoddwr mae bron yn ddidostur wrtho’i hun.” Ymhlith gweithiau B Tommy a berfformir yng Nghaerdydd bydd Gardd y Mwynderau, sy’n cychwyn ein tymor yn Neuadd Dewi Sant nos Wener 3 Hydref, a sbardunwyd gan lun Bosch Gardd y Mwynderau Bydol. Meddai: “Mae’n llun ysgytwol – mae mor enfawr, mor fodern ar lawer gwedd. Nid adrodd stori’r llun ydi bwriad fy narn i yn gymaint â chyfleu’r awyrgylch, y terfysg a’r egni a’i hysbrydolodd.”
We’ll explore more of B Tommy’s work with a Composer Portrait in February at BBC Hoddinott Hall – and in an Afternoon Concert, he will conduct the Orchestra, bringing to Cardiff some of his favourite contemporary Scandinavian works. B Tommy firmly believes that the roles of composer and conductor are complementary: “I find that every time I conduct an orchestra, it’s like a lesson in orchestration. I always learn something new about how the instruments interact.”
“I’m one of those old fashioned composers in that I want to communicate with the audience – I want them to be able to take my music to their hearts.” There are plenty of other Scandinavian influences throughout the rest of the year, including music by Sibelius (3 October) and Danish composer Langgaard (18 November). We’ll also be exploring the music of neighbouring countries Estonia and Latvia on 10 February, as we welcome back Estonian conductor Anu Tali for an afternoon of music by Arvo Pärt, Peteris Vasks and Tubin.
Chwiliwn ragor o waith B Tommy mewn Portread Cyfansoddwr ym mis Chwefror yn Neuadd Hoddinott y BBC – ac mewn Cyngerdd Prynhawn bydd yn arwain y Gerddorfa ac yn dod â rhai o’i hoff weithiau o Lychlyn i Gaerdydd. Mae B Tommy yn credu o eigion calon fod rolau’r cyfansoddwr a’r arweinydd yn gymar y naill i’r llall: “Bob tro rwy’n arwain cerddorfa rwy’n cael ei fod fel gwers trefnu i gerddorfa. Bob gafael byddaf yn dysgu rhywbeth newydd am sut mae’r offerynnau’n rhyngweithio.
“Rwy’n un o’r cyfansoddwyr hen ffasiwn hynny o ran awydd cyfathrebu â chynulleidfa - rwyf am iddynt allu teimlo fy ngherddoriaeth yn eigion eu calonnau.” Drwy gydol gweddill y flwyddyn mae yna ddigonedd o ddylanwadau eto o Lychlyn – gan gynnwys cerddoriaeth gan Sibelius (3 Hydref) a’r cyfansoddwr o Ddaniad Langgaard (18 Tachwedd). Byddwn hefyd yn chwilio cerddoriaeth y gwledydd cyfagos Estonia a Latfia ar 10 Chwefror pan roddwn groeso’n ôl i’r arweinydd o Estonia Anu Tali ar gyfer prynhawn o gerddoriaeth gan Arvo Pärt, Peteris Vasks a Tubin.

BROADCASTS & SOUNDTRACKS DARLLEDIADAU A THRACIAU SAIN The BBC National Orchestra of Wales is perhaps more commonly known to some audiences as the Doctor Who Orchestra. Our role, adding the magic of sound to a cornucopia of BBC programmes, means you may be listening to our musicians, and not even realise it. Recently we recorded for BBC One’s Hidden Kingdoms, providing musical mite to nature’s minute, a new work composed by soundtrack aficionado, Ben Foster. Jake Jackson, recording and mix engineer for Hidden Kingdoms, briefly explains the process of syncing the music with what’s seen on screen. “An important part of any documentary is the soundtrack – the music in the background that matches the excitement and emotions of the action on screen. The process for getting Ben Foster’s work from initial ideas to a fully recorded soundtrack takes around 4-6 weeks. Once Ben sees a rough copy of the programme, he meets with the production team to decide which parts of the episode need music – these are broken down into around 20-30 sections, or ‘cues’. These will be the moments where the soundtrack can help to heighten the emotion, to add excitement, or provide a sense of mystery. When recording day itself comes round my job is to capture the Orchestra’s performance as close to how they would sound in the concert hall, but with some additional emphasis on instruments to feature them, if they’re playing the tune or melody. The great thing about the BBC National Orchestra of Wales is that they are very used to the process of a recording session. It can be a very intense day, and everyone makes sure they are on top form when the red recording light is on, so that no time is wasted.”
This year listen out for the Orchestra on the following shows:

ON THE ROAD AR DAITH
We simply wouldn’t be your national orchestra if we didn’t take to the road, showcasing classical music across Wales. We pack our symphony orchestra into halls and theatres across the country, from Venue Cymru in Llandudno to Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Prichard-Jones Hall in Bangor to Sir Thomas Picton School in Pembrokeshire. That’s not to mention how excited we are to add Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon back into our list of homes from home. And this year, we simply won’t disappoint, with a season of real delights on your doorstep. We make a commitment to bring exceptional talent to the reaches of Wales for your ears only, so hope you’ll join us in welcoming a selection of conductors including Italian maestro Francesco Angelico and rising star of tomorrow Ben Gernon, and don’t miss the opportunity to bear witness to the bountiful energy of Alexandre Bloch. Our brass inspired spring season, featuring exceptional Norwegian trumpeter, Tine Thing Helseth, calls on recognisable fanfares by Arutiunian, Copland and Haydn, topped off with the power and might of Dvor˘ák. If you can’t wait till spring, you can stave off the winter cold with the choral joys of Ruby Hughes’s soprano vocals in November, with two jam-packed programmes. Bringing a somewhat nationalistic theme, we’re exploring Italian charm with a selection of Mozart’s arias, witnessing Mendelssohn as a tourist through his ‘Italian’ and ‘Scottish’ symphonies, and celebrating the Welsh land of song with Mathias’ Dance Overture, written for the 1962 National Eisteddfod. And in true BBC NOW fashion, our own Principal Flute, Matthew Featherstone, takes the spotlight performing Mathias’ Flute Concerto in Newtown. Christmas simply wouldn’t be Christmas without our matinee and evening performances at Sir Thomas Picton School in Haverfordwest. This year, led by Edwin Outwater, we will be joining the west in song with festive favourites, including Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride and the icy tale of RimskyKorsakov’s The Snow Maiden. So wherever you are and whatever the season, BBC NOW is never too far from being a dose of home comfort.

Ac ym mhriod ddull Cerddorfa’r BBC yng Nghymru, yn Y Drenewydd ein Prif Ganwr Ffliwt ein hunain, Matthew Featherstone, fydd yn y sbotolau solo yn perfformio Concerto Ffliwt Mathias. An Italian firecracker of a programme, set to send heartbeats racing! With two fiery overtures from the stalwarts of Italian opera – Rossini’s comedy The Barber of Seville and Verdi’s intensely dramatic La Forza del Destino.

We also explore Italy as a tourist – through the music of German composer Mendelssohn who was inspired to write his fourth symphony whilst on holiday. It’s an uplifting piece full of joyous melodies - as Mendelssohn himself described in a letter to his sister, it’s “the jolliest piece I have ever done”.
Rhown dro am yr Eidal hefyd fel twristiaid – drwy gerddoriaeth y cyfansoddwr o’r Almaen Mendelssohn a ysbrydolwyd i sgrifennu ei bedwaredd symffoni pan oedd ar ei wyliau. An evening of music from different parts of the UK and Ireland. Welsh composer Mathias wrote his Dance Overture for the 1962 National Eisteddfod in Llanelli – with plenty of LatinAmerican rhythms thrown in amongst the lively melodies.
Noson o gerddoriaeth o Gymru, yr Alban, Lloegr ac Iwerddon. I Eisteddfod Genedlaethol 1962 yn Llanelli y sgrifennodd Mathias ei Dance Overture – a digonedd o rythmau LladinAmericanaidd ymhlith yr alawon bywiog.
Irish composer Stanford wrote his beautiful Irish Rhapsodies as a love-letter to his homeland; whereas Mendelssohn wrote his Scottish Symphony whilst travelling through Scotland, inspired by the picturesque landscapes.
Fel llythyr caru at ei famwlad y sgrifennodd y cyfansoddwr o Wyddel Stanford ei Rapsodïau Gwyddelig; tra sgrifennodd Mendelssohn ei Symffoni Albanaidd tra oedd yn teithio’r Alban, wedi’i ysbrydoli gan y tirweddau hardd.

By the time he wrote his Fourth Symphony, Tchaikovsky was obsessed by the idea of fate. From the powerful opening fanfare, right through to the majestic ending, it’s as dramatic as you’d expect from the master of Russian symphonies.
Erbyn iddo sgrifennu ei Bedwaredd Symffoni aethai’r syniad o dynged yn chwilen ym mhen Tchaikovsky. O’r ffanffer agoriadol rymus hyd at y diwedd mawreddog, mae’r un mor ddramatig ag y disgwyliech gan feistr symffonïau Rwsia.
By contrast, Shostakovich’s Festive Overture is almost carefree, brimming with unbridled joy. Also featured are two of the most popular of trumpet concertos, by Haydn and Arutiunian.
Yn hollol groes, mae Agorawd Gwˆyl Shostakovich bron yn ysgafala, yn berwi gan lawenydd di-ffrwyn. Mae yma hefyd ddwy o’r agorawdau utgorn mwyaf poblogaidd, gan Haydn ac Arutiunian.

Dvor˘ák wrote his last symphony soon after he had moved to New York, and filled the work with references to both Native American songs, and his native Czech folk dances. It’s since gone on to be one of the most popular of all symphonies.
Sgrifennodd Dvor˘ák ei symffoni olaf toc wedi iddo fudo i Efrog Newydd a llenwi’r gwaith â chyfeiriadau at ganeuon Brodorion America ac at ddawnsiau ei famwlad Tsiecoslofacia. Mae bellach yn un o’r symffonïau mwyaf poblogaidd oll.
American composer Copland was inspired to compose his powerful Fanfare for the Common Man, full of hope and aspiration, after hearing a speech by Henry A Wallace, then Vice-President of the United States. We’ll also be playing Quiet City, which started life as incidental music for a play of the same name, and features a haunting trumpet part.
Ysbrydolwyd y cyfansoddwr o Americaniad Copland i gyfansoddi ei waith grymus Fanfare for the Common Man, sy’n llawn gobaith a dyhead, ar ôl clywed araith gan Henry A Wallace oedd ar y pryd yn Is-arlywydd yr Unol Daleithiau.
