Parish Point Of View John Bailey, Lay Reader at St John’s Church
A Journey Into the Desert By the time this issue of BBH Mag hits your doormat, Easter will be just around the corner. But there’s still time to appreciate one of the best kept secrets of the church year: the season of Lent. Lent can get a bad press. It can seem a joyless ritual in which people make a virtue out of being miserable. I mean, why on earth give up something you like, something that helps you to relax and cope with the pressures of life? But Lent doesn’t have to be like that. In fact, I want to suggest that these last few days before Easter could be a rewarding time: a time for taking back control of your life, perhaps for making fresh plans. And not just for churchgoers, but for everyone. The story of Lent begins with Jesus. Before embarking on his public ministry, he went out to a lonely place in the desert to grapple with his demons. Part of him evidently wanted to do things the easy way: To use his extraordinary gifts to make life comfortable for himself. To dazzle and manipulate with displays of power. In the language of pop culture, to go over to the dark side. After a long struggle, he resolved to do things the hard way: To live in hardship. To make himself vulnerable. To love unconditionally, even at the cost of his own life. And for Christians, Lent is a time when we symbolically journey into the desert with Jesus, to join in his battle with dark forces and share the taste of victory over temptation. But that mystical journey into the desert is open to everyone. Spring is a time when we’re captivated by the green shoots of nature as the long stranglehold of winter is broken. But it’s equally a time when our own physical metabolism is picking up, and we’re more open to new opportunities. It’s a hopeful time of year, when old habits of body and mind can be relatively easy to break. So, whatever we feel threatens to control us, or just to numb us into accepting things the way they are – anything from comfort eating to those modern addictions like TV or social networking - this is a perfect time to free ourselves up for a few days. Not to suffer simply for the sake of suffering, but to create the space for something new. John Bailey is married to Revd. Kate, the Curate at St. John’s. He is a Licensed Reader (Lay Preacher and Worship Leader) in the Church of England, and a retired RE & philosophy teacher.

BBH Mag Sport
News from local sports clubs.
If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath Football Club News on our new facilities has gone a bit quiet but I understand things are going on behind the scenes with the developers comprising a short list of companies to build the pavilion before making a final decision. We were expecting the sports ground contractors to have returned by now to prepare the pitches but given that none of the promised community facilities in BBH have so far been delivered I guess we shouldn't be too surprised. Meanwhile on the pitch the first team are going through a bad spell of results at the moment having lost 6 or our last 7 league games, part of this is due to the fact that we have played 4 of the teams above us but we have also lost a few players to rival teams and we have a very long list of injured players. However that gives opportunities to other players, one of whom Mitchell Clark (18) has played at every level for BBHFC from Under 7 upwards and has started the last 3 games in the first team, another 18 yr old Tallon Baker stepped up from the Under 18 team to make his senior debut, let's hope they both have a long and successful career in football. Heath lost their semi-final match in the Peter Bentley Cup by 2-1 to high-flying Hayward Heath, the winning goal was scored in the 2nd half of extra time, a really good performance by the Bears who gave their all but it wasn't quite enough on the night. Our league match against local rivals Horsham YMCA has been rescheduled for Tues 4th April at Gorings Mead. Heath were winning this 2-1 in the 94th minute when the YM keeper went down injured and the game was abandoned. I think everyone at the club was astonished with the League's decision to replay the game but they say there was still 2 minutes left to play and YM might have equalised. In reality it was very unlikely they would have equalised but how on earth can the League consider replaying the entire match a fair thing to do? The Reserve team were unbeaten in the league until Christmas but then lost 3 of their first 4 matches in the New Year, despite that they remain top of the division with 3 games remaining and if they win all 3 nobody can catch the but that's big ask with several regular players now on first team duty. They are also in the league cup semi-final but the date for that game has not yet been announced. www.pitchero.com/clubs/ broadbridgeheathfc 6
In the Juniors Section the Under 15 team look as though they will miss out on winning their division, they are still top but surprisingly have lost their last 3 games and with it almost certainly the title. The Under 13 team have done pretty well and will finish midtable in their division. The Under 12 team have struggled in the Horsham League but they are in the top division, the other Under 12 team play in the top division of the Sunday League and have done very well playing against some very good teams week in week out. If you would like to join our friendly team of volunteers, then we would really like to hear from you whether it's juniors or seniors we have a role waiting for you. Next first team fixtures as follows: Tues 04 Apr, Away v Horsham YMCA, K.O. 7.30 Sat 15 Apr, Home v Pagham, K.O. 3.00 Tues 18 Apr, Away v Loxwood, K.O. 7.45 CRICKET
Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club
Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB www. broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com At the time of writing, the sun is shining, birds are tweeting, squirrels are frolicking in the garden and my lawn is displaying the first daisies so looks like spring is in the air – although the evidence of the recent wet weather still remains at the cricket ground where you still need wellies to walk around the northern side of the outfield. Nevertheless, work is about to start getting the ground ready for this summer’s cricket and stoolball and all we need now is some rain-free week-ends to enable club members to get everything ready as there is much to do before the first home game on May 6th - although we will have played two away games by then ! That pre-season preparation work will include the refurbishment of our static and mobile nets. Meanwhile, our pre-season indoor adult nets at Forest Boys School are going well each Sunday, 09.00 to 10.30 and new members have been welcomed. Alongside, our indoor team continues to go well in the competitive Crawley Indoor League. News of the week days for outdoor nets for both adults and juniors will be provided in the next edition. Report by Colin Case BOWLS Horsham District Indoor Bowls Club Following five years of uncertainty the future of the bowls club is now assured and we are currently working hard to rebuild the membership. To this end we will be announcing several initiatives over the coming months and details of the first one will appear in the May edition. More information about our club can be obtained from our website at: www.horshamdistrictindoorbowlsclub.co.uk We are located at the bottom of Tesco’s car park and visitors are always welcome to drop by. 7
TENNIS
Broadbridge Heath Tennis Club Spring is in the air and the clocks will shortly be moving forward giving us longer evenings to enjoy tennis. The committee continues to promote the club as widely as possible including advertising in local magazines and schools to attract new players. We have two all weather courts situated next to the Cricket Field, Byfleets Lane. All standards are welcome and courts can be booked by the hour. Please see our website www.bbhtc.net for more information about the club and how to become a member. One of the things we are most proud of at our Broadbridge Heath courts is the high standard of our playing surface and we are pleased to announce that the courts will soon be cleaned and repainted ready for the new season in April. We will also be fitting new playing nets and replacing the screens to the perimeter fence. During the refurbishment, the courts will be temporarily out of use but we will let members know the exact dates when these have been confirmed by the contractors. Parking – while the council is carrying out work to Byfleets Lane and the land adjacent to this road, please park safely with consideration to all. SWIMMING Horsham Lions 6th Swimarathon raises funds for Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice : It was raining outside on Sunday 13 March but inside the mail pool at Pavilions in the Park, the atmosphere was very sunny. The 2017 Swimarathon was a great success and all records were broken. Not only in the swimming but monies collected for charity almost doubled from the same event last year. . 30 teams took part, swimming 3,288 lengths and beating 2016 by 77 lengths. To cap it all, The Doggy Paddlers, the team representing the event sponsor, swam a total of 194 lengths which was an all-time record. Another team, the Young Challengers, swam a fantastic 184 lengths at an earlier session but was beaten by 10 more lengths by six speedy swimmers. The record number of lengths was 186 at the first Swimarathon 6 years ago. Over £10,000 was collected for charity, over one half of this going to the Horsham Lions charity Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice in Arundel. Both the charity and the event sponsor (Assurity Consulting) assisted in the organization of Swimarathon and participated in the event on Sunday. Lions President, Tom Osborne, and chief of operations for Swimarathon, was delighted with the success of the Lions biggest event this year which is expected to be repeated in 2018. 8

BROADBRIDGE HEATH GALA SOCIETY Decision on future of the village Fete It is with regret that the BBH Gala Association will not be running the Village Fete this year. We have been unable to get sufficient villagers to join the Gala Committee, to carry out the various functions required to make the Fete a success. The Village Fete first came into being in 1977 to celebrate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee and continued for several years after this along with the Village Bonfire and several other popular village events, all run by the Gala Association. With reducing numbers on the Committee sadly the Fete, together with the other events, came to an end with just the Scarecrow Competition continuing. We would love to resurrect the Fete in 2018 but desperately need villagers to help plan and set it up. Areas where we need people or teams to take on responsibility include: • • • • • • • • • • •
Risk Assessment/Insurance Site Planning and Management Master of Ceremonies PA System Stalls Planning and Co-ordination Arena Events Planning and Co-ordination Food and Beverages Advertising/Publicity Tables / Electricity/ Water First Aid Provision Toilets
And…………..Cleaning up. If you feel you can help, all we ask for is people to attend a meeting every six weeks to ensure all of the above are adequately covered, to prevent any hiccups on the day. Please give this some thought as we would love to see our Fete back on the Village Green.
You are invited to the Gala Society AGM If you are interested in joining the Committee and getting involved, please come along to the Gala Association Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 16th May – 7.30 pm at the Village Centre. This will be followed by a planning meeting. If you have any queries please contact us: gala@broadbridgeheath.co.uk 10
News from
BROADBRIDGE HEATH PARISH COUNCIL
Making Space for Nature in Broadbridge Heath Open space and places where wildlife can thrive are increasingly in short supply in Broadbridge Heath. However, work is now well underway to create a new conservation area on Common Land at Byfleets Lane on the northern edge of the village, next to the cricket ground. Letting in the sunlight The area, which is sometimes referred to as the ‘Top Common’, is already used by a variety of woodland birds, including Goldcrest, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Bullfinch, Tawny Owl and various species of tit and warbler but, until recently, the area was dark, forbidding, and overgrown with rank vegetation. Sun-loving insects such as butterflies and bees were rarely seen. The careful clearance of Sycamore saplings, damaged trees and other vegetation has let the sunlight in and this will encourage wild flowers to germinate and become established. Hundreds of bluebells are already appearing in the brighter conditions! An attractive wood chip path has been laid around the site to create a pleasant circular walk. Feeding the hungry caterpillars
Over five hundred trees and hedging plants that will provide food and nest sites for birds and which are the food plants of the caterpillars of countless butterflies and moths have been planted. Future plans include sowing a wildflower meadow to create a nectar-rich area that will be attractive to butterflies, bees and other insects. Bat boxes and bird nest boxes will be installed.
As habitat improvements are made and more wildlife gradually returns, the Parish Council hope that local residents will enjoy visiting and walking around the Top Common. Volunteers needed However, we are now looking for volunteers to help us shape the future of this area and to assist with recording its wildlife, making and putting up bird boxes and helping with planting and habitat management. The work to improve this area is being coordinated by the Parish Council, with advice from local conservation experts. However, we would like to hear from anyone with suggestions for further improvements, or if you would like to help with this exciting project. If you are interested, please contact the Clerk of the Parish Council e-mail: clerk@broadbridgeheath-pc.gov.uk Telephone: 07932 820377 11

2nd Broadbridge Heath Brownies Millie will be moving onto Guides this term but this is what she wrote about her time at Brownies: “I find Brownies interesting and fun. We find out about new games and sometimes have parties. Everything is fair and we are like sisters. We meet every Monday and I have no clubs on Monday so it fits in perfectly. If you complete a challenge you earn a badge. The challenges are not that hard. You can also complete badges by yourself at home. Badges include camping, sewing, music and survival.” Jo Pratt Brownie Leader and Joint District Commissioner 2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides and Rangers “This month we have made scrumptious pancakes in our patrols and had a variety of toppings such as raspberries, toffee sauce, chocolate sauce and strawberry sauce. We also went on a penny hike which we enjoyed since we didn’t know where we were going and we had glow sticks. Our fate lay in the hands of the penny (even though a penny doesn’t have hands!).”

WEST SUSSEX FIRE & RESCUE SERVICE Billingshurst fire station DON’T USE A MOBILE PHONE WHILE DRIVING At the beginning of March, the new law for using a mobile phone whilst driving was introduced. If you are caught using your phone behind the wheel, a big 6 points and £200 fine will be coming your way. Some people think this is a harsh penalty but it's a strong message from the Police to show the importance of not using a phone whilst driving. So many lives are lost, and so many people are injured because of the person at fault using their mobile phone. The campaign #itcanwait will be seen more and more throughout the year. For those new drivers, 6 points in your first 2 years of driving could mean disqualification so think twice, and think is the call really that important and I'm sure 'it can wait'. Please, please don't use a mobile phone whilst driving. Dan Game. Billingshurst Fire Station

VILLAGE ‘GREEN FINGERS’ Our page for BBH gardening enthusiasts by our gardening Editor, Barry Hearnshaw. Plant Of The Month for April Narcissus (Daffodil) A well-known flowering bulb for this time of year. Comes in various forms and colours. These range from yellows; creamy yellows; oranges. There are a range of dwarf forms, ideal for pot growing, rather than in mixed beds.
The classic colour we all know so well is the primrose yellow, with star like petals and frilly trumpet. Can be grown in a variety of ways outdoors. Naturalized in lawns, planted in drifts ,mixed borders and pots. Ideal for cut decoration for the household. Once the daffodils have flowered, allow the foliage to die down naturally. This will allow the nutrients to go back into the bulb, for the following season, to produce more floriferous displays. Report by Mark Pearce (Local Nursery Man) April Gardening Sunshine and showers Spring is finally in evidence as daffodils and flowering trees start to bloom. Expect the inevitable April showers this month but with sunny days too, when you can turn your attention to the lawn. It's an exciting month, with indoor-sown seeds well into growth, and its also time to start sowing outdoors. Just watch out for frosts... Top 10 jobs this month Keep weeds under control Protect fruit blossom from late frosts Tie in climbing and rambling roses Sow hardy annuals, herbs and wild flower seed outdoors Start to feed citrus plants Increase the water given to houseplants Feed hungry shrubs and roses Sow new lawns or repair bare patches Prune fig trees Divide bamboos and waterlilies 15

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath
How can an IFA help a business? A few years ago, I met someone who had recently joined a company where the sole director was left in a coma following an accident. No one had powers of attorney, so no decisions could be made and no bills could be paid. It reminded me that it's just as important for a business to have an IFA as it is for individuals. Here are some of the things to consider for your business: • Critical Illness insurance to pay out a lump sum if you are diagnosed with a critical illness such as heart attack, stroke and some forms of cancer • Income Replacement insurance to replace income you would lose due to illness or accident • Key Man insurance to cover employees whose long-term sickness would affect the company’s bottom-line • Shareholder or Partnership Protection to pay out a lump sum equal to the value of the shares in the business when a director dies. This enables the remaining directors/partners to buy back the deceased’s shares so the family gets the value they deserve whilst at the same time protecting the business. When planning this, you should also consult your solicitor because other legal agreements need to be in place to make this happen. For a free initial consultation about any financial matters, please call me on 01403 288078. I'm happy to help whether you need advice to protect yourself, your family, or your business.
