Mark Lavender. Vicar. St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath.
I was recently challenged by an article describing life as we emerge from a year of national lockdowns as being rather like arriving at the scene of a natural disaster. Here is an extract: “We are emerging into the open air after an earthquake. All around us, the world has been shaken and buildings have been razed to the floor. The instinctive response is to run to the first piece of rubble we find to try and lift it. The smart thing to do is to walk around and take in the scene. To listen carefully for the quiet cries for help that lie beneath some masonry, to call for assistance, and then to start lifting.” Who have been the losers in our community? It is important that we do not make assumptions. For example, there is talk of a new pandemic of loneliness – but not necessarily amongst the elderly. Young people have felt just as isolated, and in some cases have lost out much more than others in terms of life opportunities with nearly two-thirds of the fall in the number of employees has been among the under-25s. Over the coming months I would like to encourage you to notice those around you and listen to their story. Let’s give time towards one another, particularly our neighbours, and be willing to step in where there is a need. Let’s give value to one another’s experiences over the past year and make a commitment to making sure that all of the voices are heard within our community of Broadbridge Heath. Mark 4
Broadbridge Heath Parish Council Website: www.broadbridgeheath-pc.gov.uk Email: clerk@broadbridgeheath-pc.gov.uk Facebook: Please Like our page, Broadbridge Heath Parish Council The last year has seen more people enjoying the outdoors than ever before, and this has been evident here in Broadbridge Heath. With more people enjoying the outdoors, Natural England have refreshed the Country Code to help people enjoy the countryside in a safe and respectful way. Full details can be found on their website (https://www.countrysideonline.co.uk/ care-for-the-countryside/countryside-code/) but a few reminders are noted below: Make sure you keep to the footpaths to help protect crops and wildlife. Leave gates and property as you find them. Slow down or stop for horses, walkers and farm animals and give them plenty of room. If you’re on your bike, give way to walkers and horse-riders on bridleways. Although you might think you are being kind, feeding animals can cause them harm. Please do not feed livestock, horses, or wild animals. Litter and leftover food not only spoil the beauty of the countryside but can be dangerous to wildlife and farm animals too. Please take your litter home. Fires can be as devastating to wildlife and habitats as they are to people and property. Be careful with naked flames and cigarettes, and make sure they’re extinguished properly. Everyone knows how unpleasant dog mess is, but did you know it can be very harmful to farm animals? Be a responsible dog owner - bag it, take it, bin it. Keep your dog on a short lead around farm animals. The only time you should release your dog is if you’re threatened or chased by cattle. Keep to the right-hand side of the road so you can see oncoming traffic! Many projects continue within the Parish including the Ducky Pond. A fence was recently installed on a Health & Safety recommendation from HDC, and it’s been great to see baby moorhens and ducklings in the last few weeks. 5

Broadbridge Heath Football Club After the latest lockdown football finally resumed on the 29th March with our Junior teams all rushing to complete their league fixtures before the end of April which for many meant playing double headers. The senior sections league season became null and void but each team, Under 18, Under 23, First and Veterans all entered supplementary competitions to at least play some football before the season comes to an end. At the moment our First team are top of their mini-division in a tight group with all four teams on 6 points from 4 games, two more matches to play with the winners going forward to play in the competition semi-finals. The Under 23's are mid-table in their division with one win and two defeats but all three matches have been very close with some really entertaining football played. The under 18s have only played one game so far beating Roffey 4-0 and the Veterans have won one out of their two matches, so lots still to play for.
It's good to finally have the bar open at the club with outside table service. During the lockdown we had to dispose of most of our beer stock but we have now moved to a new supplier via the Budweiser Group and Hepworth's supplying a different range of drinks for the palate of our customers. We've also introduced a new system for ordering your drinks from the table using a QR code to bring up a menu, select your drinks, pay by card and wait to be served, what more can you want? You can of course still order a drink from staff and pay by cash if you wish, new members are welcome so come along and give us a try. Club volunteers have always picked up litter on the site and normally they collect a couple of carrier bags of rubbish each week, but since lockdown people seem to have forgotten how to use the bins, or maybe it's another side-effect of the COVID vaccine? So, a gentle reminder to those responsible, can you please take your beer bottles, helium capsules, dog poo bags and paper waster home with you or dispose of it properly int eh bins provided. We are always looking for volunteers to help around the club, so if you have some time and would like to help, then please get in contact. CRICKET PRACTICE NETS EVERY TUESDAY EVENING
I know by the time you read this it could well be raining (and we need it) but it’s been a fabulous spring of sport so far. The amazing sunny weather came just as recreational sport restarted so it’s been a great start to the season. Training sessions have been tremendously well supported and energetic too, led by new club captain Ian Stocker. The 1st XI won their first pre-season friendly at glorious Findon, have one more game at equally picturesque Scaynes Hill, then the Sussex Cricket League starts on the 1st May - and we have the midweek evening Sussex Slam next month too. Our home fixtures for May are: Saturday 1st May – 1st XI v Eastergate Monday 3rd May – Sussex Slam XI v Warnham (at Warnham) Saturday 8th May – 2nd XI v Horsham Trinity III Saturday 15th May – 1st XI v Crawley II Wednesday 19th May – Sussex Slam XI v Billingshurst Bulldogs Saturday 22nd May – 2nd XI v Crawley III Saturday 29th May – 1st XI v Steyning II Meanwhile, despite the drought, our groundsman Nathan Booker, continues to work his magic on the cricket square and it’s all starting to come together along with the many other equipment and building improvements that I set-out in the last issue. We just need to sort out those rabbits ! So don’t forget, if you are a new cricketer to the village or used to play and fancy giving it another go, come along any Tuesday evening and give it a go. Alternatively, give Ian Stocker a call on 07570800795. He’d love to hear from you. Colin Case =================================== If I had a hammer: Sussex Wildlife Trust in BBH One bird I’ve always dreamed of adding to my garden bird list is the Yellowhammer. Yellowhammers are farmland birds which can be encountered singing on hedgerows in the countryside across Sussex, their song famously sounding like a request for ‘A-littlebit-of-bread-and-no-cheese’. In cold winters these rural birds can be pushed into suburban gardens in search of food which gave me hope that one day I would be blessed with a Yellowhammer. During colder winters flocks of Reed Buntings – relatives of the Yellowhammer- have taken up a regular residence in my garden and I would hopefully scan them for a flash of yellow - which after 8 years of waiting is what finally happened on 18 February. Then again on 19 February. Then a pair flew in on 20 February. I raced out to the local garden centre and bought a bag of birdseed and diligently spread it under the bird table recreating the bird’s farmland feeding habitat. Now each day I’m visited by a flock of 18 Yellowhammers!! For weeks I’ve sat stunned each morning as I watch these beautiful canary-yellow birds brightening up my garden with a burst of bright colour. They’ve even started singing on the fence! After the long, dull, locked-down winter I’ve suffered these exotic-looking birds have delivered a jolt of excitement that has really spiced up my spring. 9

1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows The second half of the spring term continued with zoom meetings. The Rainbows rose to the challenge of a Chinese New Year themed escape room, completing all of the challenges to escape! We went back in time creating our own cave paintings and blue heritage plagues. Online meetings have really opened up our opportunities to have cooking activities with the Rainbows, this time we made no yeast pizzas. We finished the term making no sew sock Easter bunnies. We are really looking forward to meeting the girls again when we restart our face to face meeting after the Easter holidays 2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides Continuing with our online meeting the Guides have completed a few experiments; trying create the furthest flying paper aeroplane and recreating solar simulations in a plastic bottle. The Guides impressed their siblings and parents by learning a few magic tricks. We finished the term by baking jammy biscuits and creating a no sew sock bunny. We are really looking forward to seeing the girls again when we restart face to face meeting after the Easter holidays. If you can spare an hour or 2 a week or are willing to help behind the scenes with admin etc. we would love to hear from you. For more information regarding volunteering please contact: Sarah Little Clemsfold District Commissioner ggclemsfold@gmail.com or visit girlguiding.org.uk For girls to join please visit girlguiding.org.uk ==============================================
1st Broadbridge Heath Scout Group
The Group are absolutely delighted to have made a return to face-to-face Scouting this term. Cubs and Scouts came back this week and Beavers will be starting back next week. Under the current guidelines we are meeting outdoors and will be making the very most of the good weather. Our Cubs enjoyed a series of wide-games followed by toasting delicious marshmallows over a campfire in the Scout Hall garden. The Scouts have been working on their campsite skills including fire lighting, knots and tent skills finishing off with hot chocolate by the campfire. We have some great activities planned for the term for all our groups including hiking and making use of the reopened District campsite. We are always on the look out for volunteers to join our friendly team on Committee or as Group Leaders – if you would be interested, even in a very small role, please contact our Group Scout Leader James (gsl1bbh@horshamscouts.com). We are particularly looking for a Beaver Leader or Assistant – on-going support will be provided and we have a willing rota of parent helpers. 11

The Financial Fairy Godmother
of Broadbridge Heath
Lifetime allowance We’ve just completed another tax year, which for Financial Advisers often involves pensions. Lifetime Allowance enquiries are becoming more common, so it is the subject of this month’s article. What is Lifetime Allowance? Introduced in 2006, this is the value of a pension fund that canthbe drawn without triggering an additional tax charge. Funds not drawn by your 75 birthday will also be tested. The current Lifetime Allowance is £1,073,100. Any amount over this is taxed at 55% if taken as a lump sum, or 25% if it's taken as an income. The calculation method varies depending on what type of pension scheme you have and whether you drew on a pension before 2006. It is important to seek specialist advice if you are near to the Lifetime Allowance, as there may be action you can take to reduce the amount of tax you pay. There are still forms of Protection available allowing you to protect a higher fund value which may be applicable to you. The first step is to check whether this does actually affect you. Do remember this is only a tax charge, it does not mean you can’t exceed the Lifetime Allowance. For example your employer paying into your pension is a valuable benefit even if it results in an additional tax. It's also worth noting that there are employers who will offer alternative arrangements for those with Lifetime Allowance issues, and again this may be an avenue that could be explored. We offer a free without obligation consultation, so if you are concerned about this why not take this up to see if this applies to you and whether there are steps you can take to aid this. This article is based on our understanding of current and proposed legislation as at April 2021, which is subject to change. It’s a brief summary that cannot cover every situation. All figures, unless stated, apply to the 2021/22 tax year. Any tax benefits or charges will depend on your circumstances. If you’re at all unsure you should seek personal advice.
