Lieke went to Mozambique from June until August 2014 As an International Business student, Lieke went to Mozambique from June until August 2014. When Lieke went to live in Africa in 2011, her heart was stolen by the continent and she knew she wanted to come back when she would be given the chance. She had always heard wonderful stories about Mozambique, and therefore when the opportunity arose, she didn’t have to think twice to go to Nanatha and contribute to the development of the inhabitants. One of Lieke her future dreams is to work with microcredit programs and she thought she might get a chance to start within this field, with one of the projects of Anan Clinica. However, when she arrived and conducted a research, she noticed that there was very few knowledge about money, time, and dealing with money. For a lot of people it seemed to be difficult to distinguish luxury from primary needs and to take the responsibility to deal with money in a liable way. Currently, the people in and around Nanatha have a lot of loans with each other (with usually high interest rates), which obviously causes a lot of problems. Therefore she decided that before anyone gets access to ‘real loans’, one has to know how to deal with money and to understand the value of it. That’s why the focus of the program she taught was about being conscious about money and “thinking before you buy”. Lieke started out with a survey to get a better insight in the problems people in Nanatha and surrounding villages are currently facing. After the questions asked, they were offered the opportunity to participate in the training about money, which was organized. The first group that did the training was a mixture of men and women, with all different kind of occupations. Lieke was touched by their outstanding motivation and inquisitiveness. Initially the course would only consist of 4 lessons, but when the course was finished and the participants received their diploma, they even asked for more lessons, because they wanted to learn more. Therefore they decided together, to extend the course.

Malnutrition is still a big problem in this part of Mozambique
Feliciano and Gervasio are now trained to give the course as well, so they will be able to continue with educating the people about saving, investments and money in the future. Other than that, Lieke helped the employees from the Nuarro Lodge improving to handle their salary better, and assisted with the Anan Clinica shop by training the responsible persons some basic accounting. She would like to thank everyone in Nanatha and from the Nuarro Lodge for the amazing time. It was an unforgettable experience, and she will always remember these months as one of the best and most special summers in her life!
