Helping Health workers learn As a medical student, Eva went to Mozambique from the 12th of April until the 8th of June 2013. One of the best things she packed seemed to be a book her mother got as a present in 1984: ”Helping Health workers learn”. Her mother took it to Zambia were she and Eva’s father were going to live for three and a half years. Her father worked as a doctor in Siavonga and her mother worked with the health workers of the town and took care of Eva’s brother who was just 3 months at the time. Eva was born in Amsterdam, but because she heard so many stories about Africa and they had a lot of African stuff around like kapulanas, wooden animals, toys made from wire and African baskets she always wanted to visit Africa. Malnutrition In Holland, Eva decided that she was going to teach the activistas about malnutrition. Although the subject was taught before, its seemed that there were still people around who didn’t know how to eat healthy. Because there are still a lot of analphabetic people in and around Nanatha, Eva decided to make some big drawings of the different kinds of food out of the 4 food groups and besides she evented some games about the subject. Did you ever take a second look at a die? Or wondered yourself about coloured paper? Eva learned that nothing is obvious!. Each of the 4 food groups had a specific color. After the activistas finished their presentation about these food groups and about malnutrition they called different kind of food which belonged to one of the food groups. The audience had to hold up the right color which matched the product the activista called. As soon as the activistas divided the colored paper everyone started to laugh. Besides, they were really enthusiastic with holding up the paper with the right color. Men, women, children, everyone loved it. The second game Feleciano and Eva created was ‘Snakes & Ladders’, a board game with 100 squares which teaches the player all kind of lessons. The snakes tell you about bad things and the ladders tell you about good things. If a player lands on a square with the bottom of a ladder, the player goes up on this ladder. If a player lands on a square with the head of a snake, the player slides down to his tail. Hilarity when the first players had to go back from number 98 (100 is the finish) to number 14 and laughing and clapping when the first player arrived at the finish. Since everyone came to ask for a game, Feleciano and Eva made a game for every village around Nanatha. Enriched porridge Besides teaching about the different food groups. The activistas and Eva organized a workshop about how to make an enriched porridge. Again they used the same colors. For a good porridge, you needed one product of each color! In a blink some mothers made a fire, others where mashing peanuts, others were cutting the cassava leaves in little pieces and others were looking for firewood. In the meantime, the kids were playing the board game and the fathers were told what they could buy in our own little shop, for example a mosquito net or condoms. The recipe was well received, the mothers really liked that they didn’t need that many products.

Movie Last but not least, the activistas were starring in their own movie about the theatre about malnutrition. It seemed that they were great actors! Around 100 people gathered together in Nanatha to watch the movie.
Many many thanks Eva really enjoyed her stay in Mozambique. She loved to work with the Activistas and the other people in and around Nanatha. She is especially thankful to Anan Clinica for making this project possible and to Feleciano because of his enthusiasm, his desire to help the people and his knowledge about the culture. Eva went back to Holland with an experience she will never forget and learned from the people in Mozambique what is really important in life.
