A WHALE of a Time at NUARRO
THE SUPERB WALL DIVING at the continental shelf is not all that Nuarro has to offer. The lodge is located along the Mozambique Channel which boasts the annual spectacle of the Humpback Whale migration, where these great giants leave the icy waters of Antarctica with burgeoning bellies for the warmer Indian Ocean to calve. The voyage takes them around 12 000 km north toward Tanzania and then all the way back down again to return to the cold, nutrient-rich waters. The migration season is normally between the months of July and November each year. The typical sightings are of mothers and sisters on their way north to birth or the very special moments of mothers and calves getting to know one another on their voyage back to the south. It is not uncommon for the whales to come right into the bay in front of the lodge, so no one misses the performance! There is nothing more heavenly than whale-watching from the laid back beach bar, G&T in hand, munching on some fresh spicy prawns! For sea-farers, the experience is incomparable. A short boat ride off the beach will take you much closer to these gentle giants. The whales are treated with the utmost respect by the boatmen and passengers alike. You are urged to keep your distance, giving them the opportunity to come to you. If they are curious – which they mostly are – they will approach the boat through their own volition. You really get an idea of the sheer magnitude of these majestic creatures when the blowing sounds echo like gunshots and the water they blow out showers over you like an African rainstorm!
