• Despite popular myth, diabetes is not caused by consuming too much sugar. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder – the body’s immune system destroys the pancreatic cells that create insulin, which regulates sugar in the blood. Type 2 diabetes (which constitutes 90% of diabetes cases in the U.S.) is a metabolic disorder that usually occurs later in life. It may be the result of heredity, lifestyle, or several other factors. • Excess weight and a sedentary lifestyle are key contributing factors for Type 2 diabetes. A healthy diet and regular exercise are important preventative measures, and regular doctor check-ups are important! • Diabetes is not a “modernâ€? disease – it was first recorded some 3500 years ago. The papyrus notes of an Egyptian physician named Hesy-Ra described a condition that resulted in the “passing of too much urine.â€? • Worldwide, one in 17 people is diabetic. What country has the largest number of diabetics per capita? No, not the United States. It’s India, with around 10 million. China is also experiencing what experts are calling a diabetic pandemic. In Western nations, obesity is a leading cause of Type 2 diabetes. But most of the rural Indians and Chinese that are being diagnosed today are not overweight. Scientists believe that they have a genetic predisposition to insulin resistance. turn the page for more!

live. In fact, his young female fans have launched a new game: study Nick’s photos and spot his OmniPod device! • Singer Patti Labelle knows why diabetes is commonly called “the silent killer.” She had no symptoms (and never even felt sick) until one night in 1994 when she fainted while performing live. She thought it was merely exhaustion, but tests at the hospital the next day revealed that she had Type 2 diabetes. Labelle’s mother had the disease as well, which made her a likely candidate. But like many of us, Patti only went to the doctor when she was sick. Her failure to get regular check-ups led to the delay in diagnosis.

• Actor Wilford Brimley has appeared in several TV commercials for diabetes testing supplies. He’s also been the subject of many Internet video parodies due to his deliberate pronunciation of the disease as “dy-uh-BEEtuss.” While some dictionaries list both pronunciations as correct, the more common “dy-ah-BEEtees” rendition is widely considered to be the correct one. • Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas: it helps the body convert glucose (sugar) into energy. The identification of insulin and its effect on the body came in 1921. The first patient to have his diabetes treated with insulin was a 14-year-old boy named Leonard Thompson. He was a “charity” patient at a Toronto hospital, and lived for several years after his diagnosis thanks to daily insulin injections. He died of pneumonia in 1935. • A relatively new treatment for Type 1 diabetics is called islet transplantation. • In 1989, Oscar winner Halle Barry collapsed on the set of her short-lived sitcom Living Islets are cells found in the pancreas that Dolls. Doctors diagnosed her with Type 1 produce insulin. These cells are taken from diabetes and started her on a regiment of deceased organ donors and transplanted insulin. Smart, who played Charlene, was diagnosed with Type 1 when she was 13. Today, she keeps jellybeans in her pocket for those times that her blood sugar dips. Beauty queen Delta Burke, who played Suzanne, was diagnosed with Type 2 in 1997. She is now a spokesperson for a new diabetes medication, Byetta. • Jerry Mathers, the title character on the classic TV show Leave It to Beaver, was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 1989. He’d packed on some pounds, and his doctor told him that losing weight would help his diabetes. Unfortunately, Mathers attempted a radical diet approach: skipping breakfast and lunch, then eating a large dinner. This only sent his blood sugar levels on a rollercoaster ride that worsened his condition. Today, he follows a sensible diet prescribed by his physician and has his disease well under control.

Tidbits® - Denver Metro Area PRESENTS TRIVIA NEWSFRONT™ by Kara Kovalchik & Sandy Wood

• On Nov. 16, 1849, a Russian court sentences author Fyodor Dostoevsky to death for alleged antigovernment activities. Instead, he received a last-minute reprieve and was sent to a Siberian labor camp, where he worked for four years. In 1866, Dostoevsky published “Crime and Punishment,” one of his most popular works. • On Nov. 11, 1852, the Saturday Evening Gazette publishes “The Rival Painters: A Story of Rome,” by Louisa May Alcott, who would later write the beloved children’s book “Little Women” (1868). • On Nov. 12, 1889, DeWitt Wallace, founder of Reader’s Digest, is born in St. Paul, Minn. The first issue, printed in his basement in February 1922, had an initial run of 1,500 copies. By the end of the 20th century, Reader’s Digest had the largest circulation of any publication in the world, with more than 17 million readers in dozens of countries and some 20 languages. • On Nov. 13, 1949, Caryn Johnson, later known as Whoopi Goldberg, is born in New York City. She dropped out of high school during her freshman year, later citing a learning disability that teachers mistook for retardation. In 1985, she made her movie debut in “The Color Purple” and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. • On Nov. 10, 1969, “Sesame Street,” a pioneering TV show that would teach generations of young children the alphabet and how to count, makes its broadcast debut. “Sesame Street” went on to become the most widely viewed children’s program in the world. • On Nov. 15, 1984, “Baby Fae,” a month-old infant who had received a baboon-heart transplant, dies in California. Baby Fae survived the dangerous Oct. 26 operation, but doctors were forced to increase dosages of an immuno-suppressive drug, which caused kidney failure, which ultimately caused heart failure. • On Nov. 14, 1996, pop star Michael Jackson marries his second wife, Deborah Rowe. The couple had two sons, Prince and Paris, before divorcing in 1999. Jackson’s first wife was Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis. (c) 2008 King Features Synd., Inc.

Five trivia questions about performances of the celebrities mentioned in this week’s Diabetes feature: 1. What hit by Patti Labelle was originally recorded for the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack? 2. For what TV station did Mary Richards work on The Mary Tyler Moore Show? 3. Fleetwood Mac performed their hit “Don’t Stop” at which president’s inaugural ball? 4. What blonde made a famous cameo appearance in George Lucas’ film American Graffiti? 5. In what city was TV’s Designing Women set?

• The Last Works of Henri Matisse exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art was in its 47th day when a stockbroker and Matisse fan named Genevieve Habert attended in December 1961. She noticed that one work, “Le Bateau,” was hanging upside down. She immediately brought the error to the attention museum staff, but her complaint wasn’t taken seriously. It wasn’t until she took her story to The New York Times that the situation was finally (up)righted.

FOR WEEK OF NOVEMBER 10, 2008 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Decisions involving your finances might seem to be foolproof. But they could have underlying risks you should know about. Don’t act on anything until all the facts are in. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re attracted to a situation that appeals to your Bovine intellect. And that’s good. But don’t neglect your passionate side when romance comes calling later in the week. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A recent development enhances that special relationship. Spending more time together also helps make the bonding process stronger. Expect news about a possible career change. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A suspicious situation should be dealt with before it leads to serious problems. Get all the facts needed to resolve it. Then refocus your energies on those tasks that need your attention. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Try to be more open-minded in working toward a resolution of that standoff between yourself and a colleague or family member. A little flexibility now could work to your advantage later. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might feel a bit threatened by a proposed workplace change. The best way to deal with it is to ask questions. You’ll find that those involved will be happy to provide you with the facts. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Feeling alone in a crowd during the early part of the week is an unsettling emotion. But your spirits soon perk up, putting you into the right mood to start making holiday plans. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A pesky problem should be dealt with immediately so you can put your time and effort into something more important. Someone from your past could have significant news for you. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) High-energy aspects dominate, both on the job and at home. Use this time to put some long-range plans into operation. Things level off later in the week. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Even the usually gregarious Goat might feel overwhelmed by a flurry of activities. Be patient. Things soon return to your normal social routine. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Career choices that seem too confusing to deal with at this point probably are. More information would help uncomplicate them. On the personal side, a friend might need your advice. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your Piscean imagination is stimulated by possibilities you see in a new opportunity. But keep those ideas to yourself until you feel ready to translate them into a workable format. BORN THIS WEEK: You have an ingratiating way of helping people deal with their fears. Have you considered a career in social work or with the clergy? (c) 2008 King Features Synd., Inc.

New DVD Releases for Week of Nov. 10, 2008 PICK OF THE WEEK “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” -- Ron Perlman returns as the demon-spawn Hellboy, a creature who leads a team of heroes who secretly fight “the things that go bump in the night.” There are a couple versions of this awesome comic-book blockbuster: The single disc has two commentary tracks, a featurette on the puppetry used in the film and deleted scenes w/optional commentary by director Guillermo del Toro. The three-disc set has everything in the single-disc edition, plus a digital copy of the film (for portable devices), a two-hour documentary on the making of the film, DVD-ROM features and many more making-of featurettes. There also will be a limited edition three-disc set that will include a book, poster and Golden Army warrior figurine. Guess what just made my Amazon wish list? KIDS & FAMILY “Kung-Fu Panda” -- This is one of my favorite animated films of the year. Jack Black, David Cross, Jackie Chan, Angelina Jolie and other A-listers lend their vocal talents to this story of a hapless, out-of-shape, dumpling-loving panda who dreams of becoming a member of The Furious Five, a crack unit of martial-arts heroes -- and much to his chagrin, gets what he wishes for. DOG OF THE WEEK “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” -- No, this isn’t Episode II; nor is it the outstanding 2003 animated series by Genndy Tartakovsky. This is the groan-inducing 2008 CGI’d mess that was released to theaters in advance of the equally awful television series. In this movie, Anakin Skywalker takes on a girl apprentice and they are supposed to rescue Jabba the Hutt’s kidnapped child. The animation is so horrible, you’ll think you were watching a cut scene from an old Nintendo NES video game. The dialogue and plotting are on a less-than-12-year-old level. And for some reason, George Lucas demanded that Jabba the Hutt have a Gay Relative who lisps his lines like Truman Capote on Xanax. Seriously, if you need a Star Wars fix and don’t already own the two-volume Tartakovsky series, grab those instead of this pile of Bantha poo. • • • • • • • •

When Your Car Is More Than Just a Car People who sell cars know that your car means more to you than just a vehicle to take you from point A to point B. Manu factors give cars exciting, powerful names designed to motivate us to buy that specific model. They give us different shapes and sizes to play to our emotions of what we want our car to say about us. They even give us a choice of colors to fit our temperament. But those colors fall short. A Candy Apple Red Corvette might excite us, but does it really give a statement as to who we are? And what about School Bus Yellow? It states we’re proud of our vehicle but does it tell you, with an undertone of orange, that we also have a reflective side? Of course not. And that’s where custom painting comes in to play. How many times have you bought a car, brought it home, then begin to notice the same make, model and color on the road, in the parking lot and work, or even on your street? Your car is probably the second most expensive thing you buy; just after your house, so why not make it uniquely you? Custom paint allows you to make that statement. Whether it’s a subtle under tone, stripes or even your children’s portrait painted on the hood – your car is a statement.

PAWS CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Chew on This DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor’s puppy has a ton of toys that he chews on all the time. Is this healthy? -- Joe E., Atlanta DEAR JOE: Yes, as long as the toys are specifically made for dogs. Chewing is an instinctive activity for dogs that keeps their teeth and jaws healthy and strong. For puppies, chewing not only helps them develop properly, but it also eases the discomfort of teething. A dog will chew on anything that looks chewable -- as many a dog owner has ruefully discovered after finding a favorite pair of shoes in shreds. So keeping many safe chew toys within the dog’s reach, and featuring chew toys and tug ropes (thick, braided short ropes you can hang onto while the dog pulls at the other end) during play and training will help ease that urge to chew on everything.

Randy Goodspeed of Speeds’ Custom Refinish prides himself on using only the finest paints to finish your car or motorcycle in style. “Custom paint is far different than going to Maaco,” says Mr. Goodspeed. “We don’t just run your car through a sprayer and hope you don’t notice the imperfections. We take our time and do it right – the first time.”

Goodspeed. “That kind of paint will fade fairly quickly. We use only high quality paints and sealants Goodspeed says that a custom paint job is – we want to make sure you get quality more expensive than going to a national paint service, quality craftsmanship, and a quality shop but states that a drive-through style product.” paint shop will not give you the customization Company logos are recently becoming a that your second most expensive investment trend in custom car painting. At Speed’s deserves. “I’ve painted cars, hot-rods and Custom Refinish, they will make sure your bikes from simple color mixing to stripes to logo can be seen and understood by your company logos. The vehicle you drive says potential customers. Mr. Goodspeed points a lot about you, so why not give it the quality out that it is highly important to use the contours of your car or bike to accentuate you deserve?” Custom painting your car or bike means your logo, not to just slap-on a logo on your being without your vehicle for longer than car and allow the contours distort the logo. a standard drive-through paint job, but Font style is also important when painting the difference is astounding. There’s also your car. “Many shops will just put your logo a practical purpose for having your ride on your car without discussing with you custom painted – durability! Many national how the finished product will look,” says drive-through paint shops spray on paint Mr. Goodspeed. “When I custom paint your and you drive it home. With custom paint logo, we want to make sure the font is clear you will have the added benefit of higher and clean so your message won’t get lost.”

quality paint which lasts longer with keeping the vibrancy of the color and you will also get a quality sealant which will help protect your car and investment.

Speed’s Auto Refinish is located at 4355 S. Parker Road in Aurora (Southwest corner of Parker and Quincy). Mr. Randy Goodspeed suggests calling for an appointment at (303) “We don’t use $50 per gallon paint,” says Mr. 916-5619.

Safe chew toys do not shred or shatter when a dog sinks his teeth into them -something you don’t want to happen, as shards can cut a dog’s gums, and swallowing debris can cause serious health problems. So owners should buy only approved toys that are appropriate for their dog’s age and size. A Great Dane shouldn’t be chewing on a toy sized for a Chihuahua, and likewise, a toy poodle might have trouble gnawing on a toy sized for a Doberman. Remember also that owners (and those who will have dogs coming over to visit) should put away any objects they don’t want chewed. Shoes, children’s toys, plants, newspapers -- you name it -should be placed in a room or closet that can’t be accessed by the dog. A floor clear of everything but a few strategically placed chew toys is ideal. ! Send your tips, questions and comments to Paws Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. WEEKLY FUNNIES (continued from page 3)

A school principal often watched the younger pupils play. On one occasion some children were playing school when a younger child joined them. One of the more out spoken tots turned to him and said, “You can’t play school, you can’t read or write. I’ll tell you what — you be the principal.” Two confirmed bachelors sat talking. Their conversation drifted from politics to cooking. “I got a cook book once,” said the first, “but I could never do anything with it.” “Too much fancy cooking in it, eh?” asked the second. “You said it. Every one of the recipes began the same way - ‘Take a clean dish and. . . .’” My husband, George, enjoys plain cooking.

One evening, just for variety, I prepared a fancy meat loaf. Our boarder was delighted, and as he reached for a second helping he said, “Is the meat loaf ever good.” “Very seldom,” was George’s glum reply. A fellow had lived at home for 43 years and wouldn’t wed for fear of his mother’s reaction. Then he met Mary. After a brief courtship, they eloped. For a year they kept the marriage secret. Finally Mary insisted that he tell his mother. When he did, the elderly woman was furious. “Mother,” he asked fearfully, “don’t you approve?” “A fine thing,” cried the mother. “You and Mary have been married a year, and I’m still doing your shirts!” After a caller told the Battle Creek, Michigan, Humane Society about two ducks trapped by the ice on a pond, shelter-manager Mike Pearson rushed right over. He inched his way out a considerable distance and, as onlookers stood by, made his way back to safety with the ducks. Both of the wooden decoys were expected to survive. Some buffalo were placidly grazing on the open range when a cowboy rode up. He stared at them for several minutes and then blurted out, “You are such ugly creatures! Your hind legs are longer than your front ones; you have humps on your backs, shaggy hair, beady eyes and tails with bushes on the end. Ugh! Disgusting!” Then he rode away. “Gee,” one buffalo remarked to another, “I think we just heard a discouraging word.”

• It was Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman who made the following sage observation: “There are 1011 stars in the galaxy. That used to be a huge number. But it’s only a hundred billion. It’s less than the national deficit! We used to call them astronomical numbers. Now we should call them economical numbers.” • If you’re planning a trip to the great state of Texas next summer, be sure to stop by the small town of Clute in late July. You wouldn’t want to miss the Great Mosquito Festival, which features a Mosquito Legs Contest and a Mosquito Calling Contest. It makes you wonder, though: How exactly do you call a mosquito? • Statistics show that widows outnumber widowers by a ratio of 5 to 1. • Holstein cows are known to be prolific milkers. A good heifer can produce her own weight in milk in just a couple of weeks. • Soup is often served as a first course in Western cuisine, but if you travel to China and eat traditional meals, you’re more likely to have it as the last course. • Are you ambisinister? Don’t worry, it’s just a fancy way of saying that you’re clumsy with both hands. The literal meaning is “with two left hands” -- the manual equivalent of having two left feet. • It’s been reported that gangster Al Capone paid, in today’s dollars, upward of $300,000 in bribes every week. • More interesting collective nouns: A group of moles is known as a “labor,” a flock of turtledoves is called a “pitying” and a school of jellyfish is known as a “smack.” • The French once raised domesticated beavers as a food source.
