GOING UP!

by Patricia L. Cook

Have you ever ridden a funicular? If you’ve ridden an incline railway, you have. Let’s look at some of the many funiculars in the world‌going up with history! • A funicular is a railway that is used on steep inclines where two counterbalanced cars are linked by a cable. When one goes up, the other comes down. The rail cars are built specifically for the grade of the incline the funicular is climbing so that passengers remain horizontal riding up or down – and, yes, the cars look odd!

• The oldest funicular in the world is believed to be the Reiszug, at Hohensalzburg Castle (built to transport supplies) in Salzburg, Austria. It was first documented in 1515 by Cardinal Matthaßs Lang who became the Archbishop of Salzburg.

Proven Tips, Tools and Tactics To Make Money From Home

• The Reiszug is privately owned but another funicular, Festungsbahn, dating from 1892, is open to the public going to the same castle.

From Mack Michaels: “This system makes me at least $171,168.06 per month and you can start using it 15 minutes from now!

• Most of the old funiculars have been updated so that instead of ropes and human or animal power, they are operated by electricity.

• Older funiculars had four rails until Professor Thaddeus Lowe came up with the idea using three rails in 1893 with the Mount Lowe Railway in Altadena, CA. A four-rail section in the middle allows the cars to pass. • Wellington, New Zealand is a hilly city where private funiculars are common. The public Wellington Cable Car (a funicular) is a widely recognized symbol of the city. It passes through three tunnels and over three bridges. The Wellington Cable Car Museum is at the top in the city of Kelburn. turn the page for more!

Page 2 GOING UP! (continued) • J.K. Graves, a former mayor, senator and banker in Dubuque, Iowa, wanted more time for lunch and a nap… living on top of the hill, his buggy ride to the bottom for work took too long. He had a one-car funicular built for his private use in 1882. In the late 1800s the Fenelon Place Elevator Co. formed and the funicular became public, revamped with a streetcar motor, turnstile and steel cables. In 1977 a major overhaul was done and it is still operational today. Great view of three states! • The Fenelon Place Elevator is said to be the shortest and steepest scenic railway in the world. It is 296 ft. (90 m) in length and transports passengers 189 ft. (58 m) uphill. • Another short line…said to be the shortest funicular in the world, is in Zagreb, Croatia. It was built in 1890, is 216.5 ft. (66 m) long and the difference from top to bottom is only 98.5 ft. (30 m). • The Duquesne and Monongahela Inclines in Pittsburgh, PA were built in 1870 and 1877, respectively, and are still operational. Through the years Pittsburgh has had 17 funiculars with the Monongahela being the oldest continuously operating in the U.S. • Also in Pennsylvania, the Johnstown Inclined Plane is large enough to haul wagons, horses, and vehicles up a 70.9% grade. It was built in 1889 when new residential areas opened uphill after a flood and has helped with flood rescues in 1936 and 1977. • The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway in Chattanooga, TN carries passengers one mile (1.6 km) on what is claimed to be the world’s steepest passenger railway, a 72.7% grade. • Between 1883 and 1932, there were 29 funiculars in Valparaiso, Chile. It is the principal port and only large city in Chile built on hills. The fifteen funiculars in operation today are an integral part of the transit system. • The Canadian side of Niagara Falls in Ontario has the Horseshoe Falls Incline. It does not descend into the gorge below the falls like past area funiculars. It was built in 1966 for access to businesses above the falls. • The Funiculaire du Vieux Quèbec in Quebec City originally used a water ballast system of propulsion in 1879. It was converted to electrical power in 1907. It links

the upper and lower parts of the only city in North America with historic city walls. • The only water driven funicular still in good shape operating today is the Brom Jesus Funicular in Braga, Portugal. • Several funiculars have been built in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado but the only one still operational is at Royal Gorge. It was difficult to build, with granite mountain walls looming around it. It descends 1500 ft. (457 m) to the Arkansas River with great views of the Royal Gorge Bridge overhead. • The Katoomba Scenic Railway is part of a large privately-owned tourist attraction in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. It was built in the 1880s as part of a network of trams for a coal and shale mining operation.

When your financial obligations get too big...

Morse & Associates, LLC is here to help.

$500 Bankruptcy

FOR WEEK OF OCTOBER 05, 2009 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An upcoming trip could create some problems with your schedule unless you tie up as many loose ends as possible before you head out the door. Ask a friend or colleague to help you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Being eager to start a new project is fine. However, moving ahead without knowing what actually will be expected of you could cause a problem down the line. Ask some questions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Getting through some recent challenges in good shape might give you a false sense of security. Don’t relax your guard. You need to be prepared for what else could happen. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Caution is still advised, even though you think you’re as prepared as you need to be. Keep in mind that change is in your aspect, and you should expect the unexpected. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Lion’s gift of persuasion helps you get your points across, even to some of your most negative naysayers. An old friend might seek you out for some advice. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Being sure of your convictions is fine. But leave some room for dissenting opinions. You might learn something that could help you avoid a possible problem later on. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Getting good legal advice on what your rights actually are is the first step toward resolving that pesky problem so that it doesn’t reemerge at a later date. Good luck. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Longtime relationships work well this week, whether they’re personal or professional. It’s also a good time to invite new friends and colleagues into your life. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good week to do the research that will help you uncover those irrefutable facts that can back you up on your new venture when you most need it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Change is an important factor in your aspect this week and could affect something you might have thought was immune to any sort of adjustment or “alteration.” AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Being asked to share someone’s deeply personal confidence might be flattering, but accepting could be unwise. Decline gracefully but firmly. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) As wise as you are, you could still be misled by someone who seems to be sincere but might not be. Take more time to assess the situation before making any commitments. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to face challenges that others might try to avoid, and by so doing, you set an example of courage for all.

WEEKLY FUNNIES

By Samantha Weaver

The banker fell overboard from a friend’s sailboat. The friend grabbed a life preserver, held it up, not knowing if the banker could swim, and shouted, “Can you float alone?” “Obviously,” the banker replied, “but this is a heck of a time to talk business.”

• It was British novelist Terry Pratchett who made the following extremely sage observation: “Some humans would do anything to see if it was possible to do it. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying ‘Endof-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH,’ the paint wouldn’t even have time to dry.”

A very homely person made an appointment with a psychiatrist. The homely person walked into the doctor’s office and said, “Doctor, I’m so depressed and lonely. I don’t have any friends, no one will come near me, and everybody laughs at me. Can you help me accept my ugliness?” “I’m sure I can.” the psychiatrist replied. “Just go over and lie face down on that couch.”

• You probably don’t think much about the fees charged at ATMs, but maybe you should start. That $1 here, $2.50 there really adds up -- to more than $4 billion every year in the U.S. alone.

With more than twelve billion catalogs being mailed annually, it’s little wonder that marketers are distributing mailing lists anywhere possible. In one particularly cruel move, the proprietors of a chocolate catalog purchased the mailing list of a weightloss organization. Chocolate sales rose almost immediately, but the weight-loss group wised up and now keeps it clients’ names to itself.

• Do you suffer from prosopagnosia? Unless you’ve suffered some kind of injury to your brain, probably not. Also known as face blindness, prosopagnosia is the inability to recognize familiar faces. • The Goliath frog of West Africa can reach up to a foot in length and weigh more than 7 pounds. • Wimbledon, played in the United Kingdom and one of the four Grand Slam events, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world. Every year at the event about 42,000 balls are used. • If you’re a fan of the tiny, rubbery candy known as the Gummi Bear, here’s some good news for you: The world’s largest Gummi Bear is now on the market, available for about $30. The equivalent of 1,400 regular-size bears, the giant candy weighs 5 pounds. • The Campbell’s Soup paintings by Andy Warhol have become iconic, with collectors paying up to $11.7 million to own one. The very first one ever sold, however, cost only $100. That was way back in 1962, and the buyer was actor Dennis Hopper. (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

Thought for the Day: “Why is it that our memory is good enough to retain the least triviality that happens to us, and yet not good enough to recollect how often we have told it to the same person?” -- Francois de La Rochefoucauld

An investment counselor decided to go out on her own. She was shrewd and diligent, so business kept coming in, and pretty soon she realized that she needed an inhouse counsel. The investment banker began to interview young lawyers. “As I’m sure you can understand,” she started off with one of the first applicants, “in a business like this, our personal integrity must be beyond question.” She leaned forward. “Mr. Mayberry, are you an honest lawyer?” “Honest?” replied the job prospect. “Let me tell you something about honest. Why, I’m so honest that my father lent me $15,000 for my education, and I paid back every penny the minute I tried my very first case.” “Impressive. And what sort of case was that?” asked the investment counselor. The lawyer squirmed in his seat and admitted, “He sued me for the money.” My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what I start. So far today, I have finished two bags of chips and a chocolate cake. I feel better already. The Pope met with the College of Cardinals to discuss a proposal from Shimon Peres, the former leader of Israel. “Your holiness,” said one of the Cardinals, “Mr. Peres wants to determine whether Jews or Catholics are superior, by challenging you to a golf match.” The Pope was greatly disturbed,

We’ll make him a Cardinal, he can play Shimon Peres... We can’t lose!” Everyone agreed it was a good idea. The call was made and, of course, Jack was honored and agreed to play. The day after the match, Nicklaus reported to the Vatican to inform the Pope of his success in the match. “I came in second, your Holiness,” said Nicklaus. “Second?!!” exclaimed the surprised Pope. “You came in second to Shimon Peres?!!” “No,” said Nicklaus, “second to Rabbi Woods.” The General went out to find that none of his G.I.s were there. One finally ran up, panting heavily. “Sorry, sir! I can explain, you see I had a date and it ran a little late. I ran to the bus but missed it, I hailed a cab but it broke down, found a farm, bought a horse but it dropped dead, ran 10 miles, and now I’m here.” The General was very skeptical about this explanation but at least he was here so he let the G.I. go. Moments later, eight more G.I.s came up to the general panting, he asked them why they were late. “Sorry, sir! I had a date and it ran a little late, I ran to the bus but missed it, I hailed a cab but it broke down, found a farm, bought a horse but it dropped dead, ran 10 miles, and now I’m here.” The General eyed them, feeling very skeptical but since he let the first guy go, he let them go, too. A ninth G.I. jogged up to the General, panting heavily. “Sorry, sir! I had a date and it ran a little late, I ran to the bus but missed it, I hailed a cab but...” “Let me guess,” the General interrupted, “it broke down.” “No,” said the G.I., “there were so many dead horses in the road, it took forever to get around them.”
