COLUMBUS & OTHER SAILORS by Patricia L. Cook
Global Positioning System devices (GPS) and other modern technology were not available when Columbus and other early sailors made fantastic discoveries around the globe. Come explore with us! • The GPS that are so prevalent (and fun!) today were not even a dream for Christopher Columbus or Ferdinand Magellan and other explorers. • They used hand drawn maps, and good old-fashioned trial and error to navigate the world. In 1492 when Columbus was preparing his journey to find a new route to Asia for trade, he thought the circumference of the earth was 15,693 miles (25,255 km) when in actuality it is 24,855 miles (40,000 km). Quite a difference! • Furthermore Columbus thought the distance from Spain to Japan was only 2400 miles (3862 km)…it is over 10,000 miles (16093 km). There were also some unknown landmasses of significant size blocking the way, North and South America with a little Central in between!

• Would you board a ship on an adventure of such magnitude without knowing a little more? In our world of too much information (TMI!) it’s a little hard to fathom.

• His desire to find a new trade route to Asia in the late 1400s was seen as a foolish undertaking by many. Portugal refused to fund his voyage. Columbus plead a good case with King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain for the trip. The king and queen wanted a competitive edge over the other European countries and saw trade with the Indies as their opportunity. They said yes.

Page 2 COLUMBUS & OTHER SAILORS (continued) • There are eight U.S. cities, two counties, and a river named after Christopher Columbus. Also, the District of Columbia, Columbus Circle in New York City, British Columbia Province of Canada and numerous other places in the world bear his name. • Columbus, Ohio was named after Christopher Columbus. Founded in 1812, it is the largest city in, and capital of, Ohio. It also has one of the best zoos in America. Jack Hanna was the director from 1978-1993 and has been director emeritus since then. He has been a leader in increasing national interest in zoos. The Columbus Zoo has over 6000 animals.
• Colorado was the first state to declare Columbus Day as an official holiday in 1905. It became a U.S. federal holiday in 1970. • Spain celebrates “National Day” on October 12 in honor of Columbus discovering America. • Even though Columbus has been given credit in history for discovering the “New World,” Leif Ericson, a Norse Viking, actually set foot on North America in about 1000 A.D. • Ericson (also spelled Erikson) was the son of Erik the Red, who was exiled from Iceland for murder and other crimes. In his exile, he discovered Greenland. Leif became a sailor like his father, converted to Christianity and was commissioned by King Olaf of Norway to spread Christianity to Greenland. His outlaw dad tried to stop him! • Leif Ericson actually learned about a land with forests and mountains that another sailor had seen when his ship was blown off course… he was in a hurry to get to Greenland and didn’t bother to explore! That man, Bjarni Herjolfsson, told Leif what he had seen and gave him directions. From most accounts, it seems that Ericson and his crew landed on Newfoundland. • A lot of people of Nordic descent (Norway,

Congress passed a bill in 1963 for October 9 to be an observance nationwide. Most people are not even aware of this day… unless you live in the Midwest and are of Nordic descent. Canada does not observe a holiday for Leif Ericson.

SEEKING ANSWERS? FOR WEEK OF OCTOBER 12, 2009
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A changing situation calls for a change in plans. Although you might prefer the schedule you had already worked up, you could do better by agreeing to make the needed adjustments. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) That once seemingly rock-solid proposition you favored might be hiding some serious flaws. Take time to check it more carefully and question anything that seems out of kilter. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Finish up those lingering tasks so that you can then arrange to spend some time in quiet reflection. This will go a long way in restoring both your physical and spiritual energies. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A family situation could heat up and boil over unless you deal with it as soon as possible. Try to persuade other family members to work with you to help cool things down. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Cheer up, Kitty Cat! That low feeling will begin to ebb by midweek, and you should be back in the social swirl in time for the weekend. A long-postponed deal could be starting up again. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Going too fast and too far on too little knowledge could be risky. Best to slow down and check for any gaps in your information. It’s what you don’t know that could hurt you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Trying to make peace among quarreling family members, friends or colleagues can be tough. Expect some resistance, maybe even some expressions of resentment. But stay with it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Changing your mind doesn’t have to be a problem once you realize that you might have good and sufficient cause to do so. Make your explanations clear and complete. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unkept promise can be irksome and easily raise the Archer’s ire. But instead of getting into a confrontation, take time to check why someone you relied on came up short. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A new workplace distraction creates an unnecessary delay. The sooner you deal with it, the better for all concerned. A personal matter also should be attended to as soon as possible. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Once again, the Aquarian’s gift for applying both practical and creative methods to resolve a situation makes all the difference. Personal relationships thrive during the weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A relationship appears to be losing its once-strong appeal for reasons that might be different from what you think. An open and honest talk could lead to some surprising revelations. BORN THIS WEEK: Your life is bound by your belief that character counts more than anything else. (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

How to Eat An Elephant – Part 3 D I E T Is a 4 Letter Word It’s time for me, Miriam Zoole, to report in again. I must admit that I still have not been journaling. I NEED to make journaling a priority. For the past month I’ve been vacationing a bit so exercising and watching what I eat has gone by the way side. That doesn’t mean I haven’t thought about it, I just haven’t been doing it as well as I should. As soon as I came back home I started on my eating plan (NOT a diet) and lost 6 pounds in 3 days. Of course working out with Kim Sopoci, my personal trainer, was part of that success. Kim and I were discussing obesity in this country. People want to blame TV and the lack of PE in schools, but let’s stop blaming and start taking responsibility! We eat too much for the amount of calories we expend. Very simple - But, perhaps it’s not quite THAT simple. I love cookies and I can treat myself to a cookie with only 100 calories but that 100 calories affects my body far differently than 100 calories from a small apple or even from a slice of home made carrot bread. CALORIES ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL! Here’s my not-so-educated idea about where we in this country have gone wrong with our weight management: We are too Convenienced!
or to the trolley or even rode our bikes. We started the day with a filling breakfast and packed our lunch or perhaps walked home for lunch. When we returned in the evening we ate our meal, took a walk, did household chores and retired for the evening. Today most of us drive to work – we therefore need to get our walking in at some other point during the day. Many of us will eat a breakfast of cereal or drive-through and our lunch is usually drive through or something from a box, bag or can. Dinner is sometimes later in the evening and might be drive-through, or delivery. Our breakfast cereal is over processed – it’s convenient. Our sandwich bread is over processed – it’s convenient. Our Hamburger Combo Meal is over processed – it’s convenient. Pizza – convenient. Pre-made pasta – convenient, and so on.
What we need to do is to get back to basics. Instead of white bread, opt for the whole grain bread that was baked with REAL WHOLE GRAINS – if you can’t see a kernel, it isn’t really whole grain. Instead of pre-made pasta, make your own WITHOUT using white flour! Instead of restaurant pizza, make your own WHOLE WHEAT dough and add healthy toppings. What about a quick lunch? This has now become easier thanks to grocery stores wising up – walk into your local Grocery and buy a few cherry tomatoes, carrot sticks, apple, or even baked chicken One hundred years ago we walked to work and enjoy what a healthy lunch tastes like.

The price is about the same as fast food. The only other difference is that instead of driving-through you’ll actually have to park and walk in – a bonus! I don’t plan on changing my entire menu over night, nor should you. But let’s take baby steps. Let’s vow for this week to shop wisely, eat a sizeable and sensible breakfast, pack a healthy lunch, go for a walk each day and prepare 3 dinners without using prepackaged foods. That should be a good start. Kim has a rule – it’s the 80/20 rule. This is it – If you eat right 80% of the time, you can indulge the other 20%. This goes for exercise too – exercise 5 days a week and take 2 off. So let’s eat right for 5 of the next 7 days and see how good we look and feel next week. WEEKLY FUNNIES
“I’m not saying that the customer service in my bank is bad, but when I went in the other day and asked the clerk to check my balance ... she leaned over and pushed me.” By Samantha Weaver • It was actor, senator and erstwhile presidential candidate Fred Thompson who made the following observation: “After two years in Washington, I often long for the realism and sincerity of Hollywood.” • With an area of less than 1,000 square miles, the tiny Western European nation of Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in the world, and it is the world’s only remaining sovereign Grand Duchy. Considering the country’s longstanding adherence to tradition, it is perhaps unsurprising that the national motto is “We want to remain what we are.” • When you recycle an aluminum can, it’s possible for that can to be processed, reused and back on the shelf within 60 days. • The skateboard was invented in California in the 1950s by surfers who wanted to continue their favorite activity even when they weren’t in the water. • The decadence of France under Napoleon’s rule is legendary, and the luxury wasn’t reserved solely for people. It was not uncommon for pet dogs of the wealthy nobility to have their fur waxed and styled with hot rollers in imitation of Princess Eugenie, the wife of Napoleon III. • Statistics show that more babies are born during the waning moon than during the waxing moon. • Those who study such things say that the average office desk carries 400 times more bacteria than a toilet. • When creating its cocoon, the silkworm spins a continuous thread more than a thousand yards long, or 12,000 times the length of its own body. To accomplish a comparable feat, a 6-foot-tall man would have to spin a thread that stretched unbroken for 15 miles. • You may be surprised to learn that the onion is actually a lily, botanically speaking. Thought for the Day: “A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.” -- Roald Dahl
A man is stranded on a desert island, all alone for ten years. One day, he sees a speck in the horizon. He thinks to himself, “It’s not a ship.” The speck gets a little closer and he thinks, “It’s not a boat.” The speck gets even closer and he thinks, “It’s not a raft.” Then, out of the surf comes this gorgeous blonde woman, wearing a wet suit and scuba gear. She comes up to the guy and says, “How long has it been since you’ve had a cigarette?” “Ten years!”, he says. She reaches over and unzips a waterproof pocket on her left sleeve and pulls out a pack of fresh cigarettes. He takes one, lights it, takes a long drag, and says, “Man, oh man! Is that good!” Then she asked, “How long has it been since you’ve had a drink of whiskey?” He replies, “Ten years!” She reaches over, unzips her waterproof pocket on her right sleeve, pulls out a flask and gives it to him. He takes a long swig and says, “Wow, that’s fantastic!” Then she starts unzipping a longer zipper that runs down the front of her wet suit and she says to him, “And how long has it been since you’ve had some real fun?” And the man replies, “Wow! Don’t tell me that you’ve got golf clubs in there!” General McKenzie was in charge of the Navy, and he was visiting his colleague General Marshall, who was in charge of the Army. McKenzie arrives at the military camp and is greeted by Marshall. They both walk around the place, and McKenzie asks: “So how are your men?” “Very well trained, General. McKenzie.” “I hope so. You see, my men over at the Navy are so well trained, you could see they’re the bravest men all over the country.” “Well, my men are very brave, too.” Retorted General Marshall. “I’d like to see that.” So General Marshall calls a private over and says, “Private Cooper! I want you to stop that tank coming here with your body!” “Are you crazy? It’d kill me, you idiot! I’m out of here!” As private Cooper ran away, Marshall turned to a bewildered McKenzie and said, “You see? You have to be pretty brave to talk like that to a general.” Dear Father, $chool i$ really great. I am making lot$ of friend$ and $tudying very hard. Love, Dad A tourist is traveling with a guide through one of the thickest jungles in South America, when he comes across an ancient Mayan temple. The tourist is entranced by the temple, and asks the guide for details. To this, the guide states that archaeologists are carrying out excavations, and still finding great treasures. The tourist then queries how old the temple is. “This temple is 1503 years old”, replies the guide. Impressed at this accurate dating, he inquires as to how he gave this precise figure. “Easy”, replies the guide, “the archaeologists said the temple was 1500 years old, and that was three years ago” A man runs to the doctor and says, “Doctor, you’ve got to help me. My wife thinks she’s a chicken!” The doctor asks, “How long has she had this condition?” “Two years,” says the man. “Then why did it take you so long to come and see me?” asked the shrink. The man shrugs his shoulders and replies, “We needed the eggs.” The Taco Bell Chihuahua, a Doberman and a Bulldog are in a bar having a drink when a great-looking female Collie comes up to them and says, “Whoever can say liver and cheese in a sentence can have me.” So the Doberman says, “I love liver and cheese.” The Collie replies, “That’s not good enough.” The Bulldog says, “I hate liver and cheese.” She says, “That’s not creative enough.” Finally, the Chihuahua says, “Liver alone . . . cheese mine.”
