We’re in the thick of winter! Windows are frosty, the New Year is in, and we’ve settled in to wait the winter out until spring. Until the groundhog makes his predication next month, sit back and let Tidbits give you some frigid facts on ice! • We start to see it when the weather dips below freezing. Whether as icicles on the edge of eaves or in an intricate hotel in Europe, that shivery, slick ice is everywhere you look, but don’t take it for granted. Did you know that modern refrigeration is often contributed to John Gorrie? This physician and inventor is considered the father of modern refrigeration. Dr. Gorrie gave up his medical career to study refrigeration and obtained a patent for a machine to make ice in 1851! • Let’s imagine ahead to summer and the sweltering heat. Do you know what can’t be beat on a hot day in July? An ICEE. The ICEE machine was invented by Omar Knedlik back in the 60s. Did you know that the logo you see today is the very same logo from the original ICEE machine? There was even an original rendition of the famous ICEE polar bear. When the weather gets warm again in a few months, go out and get yourself an ICEE, but don’t drink too fast and get a brain freeze! • This article may be called “Break the Iceâ€? but do you remember “Don’t Break the Ice?â€? The game was popular with several generations as it was first released in 1968 by Hasbro. The game consisted of 36 blocks arranged in a 6x6 square. Players take turns trying to knock out blocks of ice without causing the central block to fall. Another similar game was 1992’s “Thin Ice.â€? Players take turns placing marbles onto a thin sheet of tissue paper - or “ice.â€? Players try to place as many marbles as they can on the ice without any breaking through. Sound like fun? ICE is located in New York City and is celebrating its 33rd anniversary this year. It was founded by Peter Kump in 1975 and originally only had five students. Today the institute has one hundred forty times that many students! Never heard of ICE? Well, don’t fret. You’ve probably heard of one of their alumna. Ashley Merriman was chosen to compete in the latest season of Bravo’s Top Chef. • Need more icy acronyms? Try U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is located within the Department of Homeland Security. ICE is a recent branch of the DHS. It was established in 2003. The branch handles the enforcement of U.S. customs and immigration laws. You can find out more about the branch and its programs by visiting www.ice.gov. • The night was full of snow and now there are long, tapered icicles on the eaves of your roof. They form when warm air escaping your house causes snow on your roof to melt, but the temperature is still freezing out and this causes the melted snow to freeze again. To help prevent icicles on your house, make sure your house is well insulated and use a roof rake to prevent excess snow buildup on your roof. • Do you know Robert Matthew Van Winkle? He was a teenager when he got his nickname, which you might recognize more than his given name. Van Winkle gained mainstream success with the release of his first rap single. The song sampled “Under Pressure” by David Bowie and Queen. Recognize him now? That’s right. It’s Vanilla Ice! • Ever heard of water ice? You have if you’re from the Philadelphia area. The term is a popular local nickname for Italian ice. If you’re from the area, you might also have heard of Rita’s, an Italian ice shop that first opened in Bensalem, Pennsylvania in 1984. Twenty-five years later and Rita’s has over 500 locations in the United States. There’s probably even a Rita’s near you. He reportedly sent men to retrieve snow from the mountains so his cooks could make him a frozen treat out of snow mixed with such things as honey or fruit. • What does the Executive Vice President of Production at Paramount Pictures have in common with the charming Southern city of Savannah, Georgia? Ice cream. Stratton Leopold and his family ran a multigeneration ice cream shop before Stratton moved to Hollywood to start his film career. He produced such movies as Born Yesterday and The General’s Daughter. In 2004, Stratton reopened Leopold’s in Savannah and they are currently celebrating 90 years! • Do you know how iceberg lettuce got its name? This mostly water based green, a classic in caesar salads, was actually called “crisphead lettuce” before the 1920s. Around this time, farmers in California began shipping the lettuce covered in crushed ice to help preserve it and the rest is history! • Would you care for some German eiswein? Maybe it’s more familiar to you by it’s English name of icewine? Eiswein first appeared in Germany around the late 1700s. Farmers noticed that grapes left on the vine and frozen produced a very sweet juice when pressed. The Germans began making wine from these frozen grapes. To be considered a true icewine in Germany, grapes must be pressed while frozen. Due to the intricate and specific way in which the grapes must be harvested, icewine is often more expensive than regular wine. • Have you heard the one about the naming of Greenland and Iceland? Before her days as a passenger liner, the Queen Elizabeth steamed across the ocean as a transport vehicle during World War II. • On Jan. 4, 1996, General Motors announces that it will release an electric car, the EV-1. • On Jan. 10, 1901, a drilling derrick at Spindletop Hill near Beaumont, Texas, produces an enormous gusher of crude oil, signaling the advent of the American oil industry. The geyser flowed at an initial rate of 100,000 barrels a day. Within a year, there were more than 285 active wells at Spindletop. Today, only a few oil wells still operate in the area.

Start by reviewing your savings goal from a year ago. Did you reach that goal? Tough as it can be to save, increasing your efforts to put money away can be a lifesaver should you become unemployed or in case of an emergency. Review your rates on CDs that are coming due and research where you’ll put your money next. Interest rates on CDs are extremely poor nowadays, but every dollar counts. Try not to lock in for more than six months. Look at your credit-card balances. Which ones are you close to paying off, perhaps within six months? Can you double up on your payments (assuming you’re not continuing to make charges on the cards) and get them paid off faster? Remember not to cancel the card when you’ve brought the balance down to zero. Your credit score will suffer for it, as it takes away from your percentage of available credit. Just let the card sit there unused, or perhaps make one charge now and then and pay it off when the bill comes. Review your credit score and take steps to get it to 740 or higher, or to keep it there if it’s already over that number. Those with higher credit scores can benefit by getting better interest rates on loans. Remember that you can get a free copy of your credit reports each year. Check for errors. If you have children who earn an allowance or money from odd jobs, start them off with a passbook savings account. You’ll likely have to be a co-signer on the account, which ensures that they can’t empty the account without your presence and approval. Be sure that the account won’t be subject to fees. Giving to charity takes planning to make sure your money goes where you intend. Research your intended charities at the two top charity Web sites: GuideStar (www.guidestar.org) and Charity Navigator (www.charitynavigator.org). If you volunteer at a non-profit organization, keep track of your expenses and mileage. Those could be deductible on your taxes. A few days later, six mice were killed in an accident and they all went to Heaven together. God met the mice at the gates with the same offer that He made to the cat. The mice said, “Well, we have had to run all of our lives: from cats, dogs, and even people with brooms! If we could just have some little roller skates, we would not have to run again.” God answered, “It is done.” All the mice had beautiful little roller skates. About a week later, God decided to check on the cat. He found her sound asleep on her fluffy pillow. God gently awakened the cat and asked, “Is everything okay? How have you been doing? Are you happy?” The cat replied, “Oh, it is WONDERFUL. I have never been so happy in my life. The pillow is so fluffy, and those little Meals on Wheels you have been sending over are delicious!” Two paramedics were dispatched to check on a 92-year-old man who had become disoriented. They decided to take him to the hospital for evaluation. En route, with siren going, they questioned the man to determine his level of awareness.
