TIDBITSÂŽ TURNS THE HEAT UP TO

BREAK THE ICE by Sarah Bates

We’re in the thick of winter! Windows are frosty, the New Year is in, and we’ve settled in to wait the winter out until spring. Until the groundhog makes his predication next month, sit back and let Tidbits give you some frigid facts on ice! • We start to see it when the weather dips below freezing. Whether as icicles on the edge of eaves or in an intricate hotel in Europe, that shivery, slick ice is everywhere you look, but don’t take it for granted. Did you know that modern refrigeration is often contributed to John Gorrie? This physician and inventor is considered the father of modern refrigeration. Dr. Gorrie gave up his medical career to study refrigeration and obtained a patent for a machine to make ice in 1851! • Let’s imagine ahead to summer and the sweltering heat. Do you know what can’t be beat on a hot day in July? An ICEE. The ICEE machine was invented by Omar Knedlik back in the 60s. Did you know that the logo you see today is the very same logo from the original ICEE machine? There was even an original rendition of the famous ICEE polar bear. When the weather gets warm again in a few months, go out and get yourself an ICEE, but don’t drink too fast and get a brain freeze! • This article may be called “Break the Iceâ€? but do you remember “Don’t Break the Ice?â€? The game was popular with several generations as it was first released in 1968 by Hasbro. The game consisted of 36 blocks arranged in a 6x6 square. Players take turns trying to knock out blocks of ice without causing the central block to fall. Another similar game was 1992’s “Thin Ice.â€? Players take turns placing marbles onto a thin sheet of tissue paper - or “ice.â€? Players try to place as many marbles as they can on the ice without any breaking through. Sound like fun? You can still find these great games and more for sale online. continued on page 2!

Page 2 BREAK THE ICE (continued) • Do you like to cook? Thought about getting your degree in the culinary arts? Then perhaps the Institute of Culinary Education, or ICE, is right for you. ICE is located in New York City and is celebrating its 33rd anniversary this year. It was founded by Peter Kump in 1975 and originally only had five students. Today the institute has one hundred forty times that many students! Never heard of ICE? Well, don’t fret. You’ve probably heard of one of their alumna. Ashley Merriman was chosen to compete in the latest season of Bravo’s Top Chef. • Need more icy acronyms? Try U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is located within the Department of Homeland Security. ICE is a recent branch of the DHS. It was established in 2003. The branch handles the enforcement of U.S. customs and immigration laws. You can find out more about the branch and its programs by visiting www.ice.gov. • The night was full of snow and now there are long, tapered icicles on the eaves of your roof. They form when warm air escaping your house causes snow on your roof to melt, but the temperature is still freezing out and this causes the melted snow to freeze again. To help prevent icicles on your house, make sure your house is well insulated and use a roof rake to prevent excess snow buildup on your roof. • Do you know Robert Matthew Van Winkle? He was a teenager when he got his nickname, which you might recognize more than his given name. Van Winkle gained mainstream success with the release of his first rap single. The song sampled “Under Pressure” by David Bowie and Queen. Recognize him now? That’s right. It’s Vanilla Ice! • Ever heard of water ice? You have if you’re from the Philadelphia area. The term is a popular local nickname for Italian ice. If you’re from the area, you might also have heard of Rita’s, an Italian ice shop that first opened in Bensalem, Pennsylvania in 1984. Twenty-five years later and Rita’s has over 500 locations in the United States. There’s probably even a Rita’s near you. Find your local Rita’s by visiting them online at www.ritasice.com. • Now some of you might even be asking, “What is Italian ice? Is it ice cream? Is it

shaved ice?” Not quite. Italian ice is made from either syrup or fruit puree that is mixed and frozen like ice cream. • It is said that Roman emperor, Nero, is one of the famous forerunners of frozen treats like ice cream. He reportedly sent men to retrieve snow from the mountains so his cooks could make him a frozen treat out of snow mixed with such things as honey or fruit. • What does the Executive Vice President of Production at Paramount Pictures have in common with the charming Southern city of Savannah, Georgia? Ice cream. Stratton Leopold and his family ran a multigeneration ice cream shop before Stratton moved to Hollywood to start his film career. He produced such movies as Born Yesterday and The General’s Daughter. In 2004, Stratton reopened Leopold’s in Savannah and they are currently celebrating 90 years! • Do you know how iceberg lettuce got its name? This mostly water based green, a classic in caesar salads, was actually called “crisphead lettuce” before the 1920s. Around this time, farmers in California began shipping the lettuce covered in crushed ice to help preserve it and the rest is history! • Would you care for some German eiswein? Maybe it’s more familiar to you by it’s English name of icewine? Eiswein first appeared in Germany around the late 1700s. Farmers noticed that grapes left on the vine and frozen produced a very sweet juice when pressed. The Germans began making wine from these frozen grapes. To be considered a true icewine in Germany, grapes must be pressed while frozen. Due to the intricate and specific way in which the grapes must be harvested, icewine is often more expensive than regular wine. • Have you heard the one about the naming of Greenland and Iceland? Popular storytelling has it that Vikings, who didn’t want

other people settling in their new found island, named the beautiful, green island Iceland and the icy, barren island Greenland to ward of unwelcome visitors and keep the island all to themselves. Truth has it that the name Iceland was given to the island by the Viking Flóki Vilgerðarson. He got the name from the icebergs floating in one of the fjords off the island. As for Greenland? It just gets a bad wrap in that story. Greenland, just like Iceland, is a beautiful country teeming with life. Don’t get us wrong, there is still plenty of ice, but there is also the color green!

• On Jan. 7, 1959, six days after the fall of the Fulgencio Batista dictatorship, the United States recognizes the new Cuban government of Fidel Castro. The U.S. government believed it could work with Castro and protect American interests in Cuba, but less than two years later, the U.S. severed diplomatic ties and unleashed the Bay of Pigs invasion. • On Jan. 8, 1966, rock-and-roll TV variety show “Shindig” on ABC airs its last episode. The show had debuted in September 1964, featuring acts including the Everly Brothers, the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys. • On Jan. 9, 1972, in Hong Kong harbor, a fire breaks out aboard the lavish Queen Elizabeth, and by the next morning the famous vessel lies in a wreck on the bottom of the sea floor. Before her days as a passenger liner, the Queen Elizabeth steamed across the ocean as a transport vehicle during World War II. • On Jan. 4, 1996, General Motors announces that it will release an electric car, the EV-1. While sales were quite modest by the standards of internal-combustion cars, the EV-1 was the best-selling electric consumer car of its time. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

FOR WEEK OF JANUARY 4, 2010

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Events could inspire adventurous Lambs looking to make a major career or personal move. But as always, get all the facts before rushing into any sort of deal or commitment. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) What seems to be a great opportunity could cause even usually practical Taureans to ignore their inner caution cues. Best to move carefully to avoid falling into unseen traps. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Need a holiday now that the seasonal festivities are behind you? Good idea. Plan to go to someplace wonderful. You’ll return refreshed and more than ready for a new challenge. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Progress continues to be made on that pesky workplace problem. Meanwhile, don’t assume a personal situation will work itself out. Best to get more involved earlier than later. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Catnaps are definitely recommended for Leos and Leonas who had been going at a hectic pace over the holidays. Adding relaxation time to your schedule helps restore your overdrawn energy reserves. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Sure, some of the new friends you made over the holidays might move out of your life at some point. But at least one might show significant “staying power” with some encouragement. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Encourage family members to join you in supporting a relative who could be facing a difficult emotional challenge in the New Year. Showing your love and concern helps keep his or her hopes up. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While a long-deferred decision suddenly might take on some urgency after news on a related matter, you still need to weigh all factors carefully before deciding one way or the other. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good time to reassess the earlier plan you made for the New Year. Some elements you felt you could depend on to make it work might no longer carry that assurance. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Forming a renewed connection with a former associate is only the first step toward working out your new plans. Be prepared for problems, and deal with them as soon as they arise. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A romantic situation that was going smoothly not too long ago might take a new turn. Be honest about your feelings before you decide whether to follow it or take another path. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The wise Pisces (that’s you, of course) will make sure everyone knows you plan to keep your options open and listen to all sides of the situation before making any decisions. BORN THIS WEEK: Your honest approach to life and living is always an inspiration for others fortunate enough to know you. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Start by reviewing your savings goal from a year ago. Did you reach that goal? Tough as it can be to save, increasing your efforts to put money away can be a lifesaver should you become unemployed or in case of an emergency. Review your rates on CDs that are coming due and research where you’ll put your money next. Interest rates on CDs are extremely poor nowadays, but every dollar counts. Try not to lock in for more than six months. Look at your credit-card balances. Which ones are you close to paying off, perhaps within six months? Can you double up on your payments (assuming you’re not continuing to make charges on the cards) and get them paid off faster? Remember not to cancel the card when you’ve brought the balance down to zero. Your credit score will suffer for it, as it takes away from your percentage of available credit. Just let the card sit there unused, or perhaps make one charge now and then and pay it off when the bill comes. Review your credit score and take steps to get it to 740 or higher, or to keep it there if it’s already over that number. Those with higher credit scores can benefit by getting better interest rates on loans. Remember that you can get a free copy of your credit reports each year. Check for errors. If you have children who earn an allowance or money from odd jobs, start them off with a passbook savings account. You’ll likely have to be a co-signer on the account, which ensures that they can’t empty the account without your presence and approval. Be sure that the account won’t be subject to fees. Giving to charity takes planning to make sure your money goes where you intend. Research your intended charities at the two top charity Web sites: GuideStar (www.guidestar.org) and Charity Navigator (www.charitynavigator.org). If you volunteer at a non-profit organization, keep track of your expenses and mileage. Those could be deductible on your taxes. WEEKLY FUNNIES A cat died and went to Heaven. God met her at the gates and said, “You have been a good cat all these years. Anything you want is yours for the asking.” The cat thought for a minute and then said, “All my life I lived on a farm and slept on hard wooden floors. I would like a real fluffy pillow to sleep on.” God said, “Say no more.” Instantly the cat had a huge fluffy pillow. A few days later, six mice were killed in an accident and they all went to Heaven together. God met the mice at the gates with the same offer that He made to the cat. The mice said, “Well, we have had to run all of our lives: from cats, dogs, and even people with brooms! If we could just have some little roller skates, we would not have to run again.” God answered, “It is done.” All the mice had beautiful little roller skates. About a week later, God decided to check on the cat. He found her sound asleep on her fluffy pillow. God gently awakened the cat and asked, “Is everything okay? How have you been doing? Are you happy?” The cat replied, “Oh, it is WONDERFUL. I have never been so happy in my life. The pillow is so fluffy, and those little Meals on Wheels you have been sending over are delicious!” Two paramedics were dispatched to check on a 92-year-old man who had become disoriented. They decided to take him to the hospital for evaluation. En route, with siren going, they questioned the man to determine his level of awareness. Leaning close, one asked, “Sir, do you know what we’re doing right now?” The old man slowly looked up at him, then gazed out the ambulance window. “Oh,” he replied, “I’d say about 50, maybe 55.” Patient: It isn’t possible that I’m as overweight as you say I am. Doctor: Maybe you would prefer to look at it in a different way.

According to this chart, you’re about 10 inches too short. Two men sank into adjacent train seats after a long day in the city. One asked the other, “Your son go back to college yet?” “Two days ago.” “Mine’s a senior this year, so it’s almost over. In May, he’ll be an engineer. What’s your boy going to be when he gets out of college?” “At the rate he’s going, I’d say he’ll be about thirty.” “No, I mean what’s he taking in college?” “He’s taking every penny I make.” “Doesn’t he burn the midnight oil enough?” “He doesn’t get in early enough to burn the midnight oil.” “Well, has sending him to college done anything at all?” “Sure has! It’s totally cured his mother of bragging about him.” For their anniversary, a couple went out for a romantic dinner. Their teenage daughters said they would fix a dessert and leave it waiting. When they got home, they saw that the dining room table was beautifully set with china, crystal and candles, and there was a note that read: “Your dessert is in the refrigerator. We are staying with friends, so go ahead and do something we wouldn’t do!” ”I suppose,” the husband responded dryly, “we could clean the house.” This redneck is traveling across Texas when a state policeman pulls him over. “You got any I.D.?” the patrolman asked. “Bout what?” the redneck replied. A nursery school teacher was delivering a station wagon full of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children fell to discussing the dog’s duties. “They use him to keep crowds back,” said one youngster. “No,” said another, “he’s just for good luck.” A third child brought the argument to a close. “They use the dogs,” she said firmly, “to find the fire hydrant.”

Somerset Bridge is less than 20 feet from one embankment to the other, and when the draws are raised, there’s barely enough room for a single small sailboat to pass. • Early in its history, the Catholic Church decreed that imbibing coffee was sinful. It seems Nijinsky appeared on stage wearing tights, but without the so-called modesty trunks commonly worn by male dancers at the time. • When George Eastman sold the patent to his Kodak camera, he received only $5,700. • The world’s best long-distance swimmers are Alaskan seals.
