Take a Hike!
Autumn is the perfect time to take a hike in Colorado. The aspen trees are full of color, the temperature is mild and the air is crisp and clean. Colorado is indeed one of the best places to fill your back pack and go for a walk. There are a few things to keep in mind while hiking in this great state: Altitude, altitude, altitude. We all know that when our friends come to Denver we warn them about the altitude. We snicker when they feel light headed and hand them a bottle of water. They’ve come from 5,000 feet lower and they’re effected instantly. Think about this – when you climb to over 14,000 feet; you’ve just increased your elevation by 8,000 feet. You too will experience altitude adjustment. If you aren’t used to hiking in the mountains, be prepared for the altitude adjustment and drink plenty of water. Temperature is another factor you need to keep in mind. As you climb, the temperature will drop. Be prepared for the cooler temperatures and remember what your mother always told you: dress in layers. We can’t stress the importance of remaining hydrated enough! Bring more water than you think you might need. Not only is the physical exertion of a good hike going to drain you of fluids but so will the sun. We know the Denver sun can be brutal, but remember you might be climbing 8,000 feet higher toward the sun. Bring – and wear – sunscreen. Other things that are good to bring along on your hike are: • Chap stick • Mosquito repellent • A compass or other navigation device such as your GPS – don’t rely on your cell phone!
• A light waterproof blanket or poncho. Other items that are small and light enough to carry on a casual hike are: • Waterproof matches • A flashlight • A knife • Signaling flares. Ready, set, Hike! Where? That depends on what you are looking for in your hike. Do you want to see wildlife? Bighorn, mountain lions or just birds? Perhaps you would like a casual, easy walk? Or do you prefer a challenging hike where you might have to scramble over some boulders and through streams? Take all of these factors into account before you choose your hike. Hiking Rules 101 - Remember to stay on the trail even if it is rough or muddy. Walking on the track edge and cutting switchbacks increases damage and causes erosion and visual scarring. You should also walk single file so you do not increase the track width. If there are no trails, and hiking is permitted, spread out in open country. Spreading out, rather than following each other’s footsteps, disperses impact and avoids creating a new trail. If you flag a trail, remember to remove your markers when you leave. Remember to obey all signs; both private and public. If the property you are hiking on is private; comply with “no trespassing signs”. If the property is public and a warning sign is posted saying “Do Not Enter.” There is a reason for the sign. Heed the warning! And the last rule Hike with a buddy. Traveling solo might be pleasant but can leave you vulnerable if you have an accident.
