Summer is here and we want to take our furry friends on all of our fun in the sun adventures.
At the lake and when boating we put our littlest children to even the best adult swimmers in life vests to avoid dangerous situations that may result in drowning.
However, it is equally as important to ensure that our pups have the proper safety flotation devices.
Here are some steps, reasons and brands to consider when outfitting your dog in it’s very own life vest.
1. Know the risks.
Even dogs that are strong swimmers can get tired or choke on water. Remember, not all dogs can swim. According to Dr. Becker with Healthy Pets it is a myth that all dogs are born with a “swimming genes.” In fact, the ability to swim varies not only by breed, but also dog to dog within those breed groups.
2. Introduce your dog to water.
Ideally the introduction step should be taken in puppyhood, but it is important for dog parents with older dogs to know how their dog will react in and around water. Be sure to choose a safe and shallow location and be aware of your dog’s body language. It is important to introduce your pet to water before an outing, or have time set aside at an outing to accommodate your pet’s comfort.
3. Take accurate measurements and be sure to have your pup try on the life vest.
Measure your dog's neck, torso and length to choose a size that will best fit your dog. According to SOutdoors.com these measurements should come from around the neck, around the torso as well as slightly further back and finally, from the neck to the point that the body slopes down from the rump. Always put your pet’s life vest on their body to assure it has the correct fit. It is important that your dog’s life vest isn’t too snug or too loose as either of these problems could result in the injury or even death of your dog.
4. Research reputable brands.
Always conduct your own research and read product reviews to gain a deeper understanding of the product you are buying for your dog. Here are a few brands that have top reviews on Chewy.com: EzyDog, Frisco, Outward Hound, Paws Abroad and KONG.
5. Consider alternative floatation devices.
You know your pet and their comfort best. In the event that your animal is uncomfortable in traditional flotation devices, there are alternatives. Hedz UP Pets Watercollars creates collar floatation devices designed to keep your dogs head above water in the event that they fall into a pool or lake. The collar comes in sizes to accomodate dogs from 3-200 pounds. For more information, or to purchase one, please visit hedzuppets.com
