Our wonderful pastoral care system supports each child’s wellbeing, health and mindfulness, as they make their way through the school’s world-class educational journey. We develop a child’s kindness, honesty, self-discipline, good manners and consideration for others, creating a culture where every child feels valued and understands the impact their actions have on those around them.

We encourage children to look outwards, to care for others and for the environment. Our pupils never fail to rise to the challenge of supporting local and national charities.

As pupils move from Nursery through to Year 8, we support them in building empathy and an inner confidence. The pursuit of wholehearted effort is our priority; whilst the school encourages and praises high standards of achievement, we believe that who you are is as important as what you achieve.

Through our innovative approach to curriculum planning, our pupils take ownership of the learning process through high-level thinking, dialogue and debate.

Forget passive learning in an orderly classroom; our pupils are busy, collaborative and energised as they take advantage of a wealth of academic and specialist provision, which utilises the most cutting-edge technologies and approaches.

We aim not only to challenge and inspire children to achieve their very best, but also to equip them for the future. Whether introducing French and Mandarin Chinese from Reception or publishing books of our pupils’ work, we innovate and give our pupils the confidence to do the same.

Whatever their talents, pupils are given the encouragement and support they need to pursue their

interests to the highest degree. They not only enjoy an outstanding record of scholarship awards, but regularly secure national, regional and county titles in a wealth of disciplines, from sport to music and design technology to drama.

BEACH SCHOOL

Our Beach School ensures our pupils develop holistically through a range of hands-on learning experiences in our coastal environment. Children are encouraged to explore the natural resources on our doorstep in a setting that supports freedom, and inspiration to cultivate a love of outdoor learning. Our Beach School initiative is a part of our curriculum from Nursery to Year 8.

As pupils progress through the year groups, they participate in our annual Make a Difference Day, where children take part in beach cleans and help our local community.

Yoga is taught from age three, and our children enjoy taking their mindful activities to the beach, facilitating spiritual growth. By listening to the sounds of the waves and concentrating on their breathing, our pupils enjoy the

physical and mental benefit of being in the present moment and focusing on the sounds and sea.

Not only does our Beach School provide the opportunity to learn about the world, but it also fosters a sense of curiosity and inquisitiveness as individuals, with a strong emphasis on play-based learning.

Educational learning at the beach is enhanced through team-building exercises such as beach scavenger hunts and stimulating group activities, fostering friendships through discovery and imagination. Our specialist teachers provide an emotionally safe environment for children to explore whilst promoting the importance of staying safe by the coast.

SPORT FOR ALL

As part of Brighton College, one of the leading sporting schools in England, our school is exceptionally well-equipped to awaken a love of sport and physical activity in our pupils while nurturing their sporting talents.

The incredible sporting facilities at the College are used by all our children. Our pupils enjoy training in the beautiful pool, rooftop running track and world-class strength and conditioning suite. Weekly fixtures take place at our idyllic sports pitches, nestled at the base of the picturesque South Downs National Park.

The school firmly places equal value upon performance and participation, as we believe this approach provides all pupils with a positive experience that will inspire a lifelong involvement in physical activity and sport.

Specialist sports lessons commence in Reception, and weekly competitive fixtures begin in Year 3 with an emphasis on participation and development. This approach continues through Years 4 to 8, when the school enters tournaments and competitions, and the focus adjusts to performance.

A strong record exists in our core sports of athletics, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rugby, swimming and tennis, including success at county, regional and national levels.

PERFORMING ARTS

Specialist music teaching is given to all, from Nursery to Year 8, helping to awaken a passion for the subject. As pupils move through the school, they continue to put theory into practice, with each child learning the recorder and ukulele. Tuition in a range of other instruments is also available.

From Year 4, three choirs, two orchestras, a concert band, and groups for guitar, string, wind and percussion all thrive in our uniquely supportive and creative atmosphere. The school is renowned for the high quality of its musicals and concerts, in which all have the opportunity to take part.

Each child can participate in shows and concerts throughout the year, helping to build confidence through music and drama. Dance lessons are available from Nursery upwards. Even our very youngest pupils take to the stage in the Dance School’s stunning annual show.

Opportunities for drama include a thriving LAMDA programme. The school has its own drama studio, as well as the state-of-the-art performing arts centre at the College, providing pupils with a broad range of opportunities to showcase their talents. Our pupils enjoy an excellent record in securing scholarships in the performing arts.
