LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

CHANGE IS IN THE AIR

Just as the Pacific Northwest transforms into a summer haven, Reflections is embracing its own season of change. My name is Åsa Douglas, and I joined Bellevue Club last fall as the new Communications Director. I am thrilled to connect with you through the pages of our beloved magazine.

Reflections is embarking on a new path. After 10 years of guiding us with her brilliant editorial leadership, Lauren Hunsberger is stepping down as Editor. Her contributions have been invaluable, and we are fortunate that she will continue to share her voice with us as a contributing writer.

This change brings an opportunity for renewal. Moving forward, the editor’s letter will feature a variety of voices, including mine and those of other leaders at Bellevue Club. Together, we aim to bring you new insights and stories that resonate.

Thank you for being part of this evolving journey. We’re excited to continue bringing you engaging and inspiring content.

Warm regards,

WHY GIVING GUIDANCE FROM AN EARLY AGE IS IMPORTANT

Don’t leave it up to Instagram and TikTok alone to teach your kids to train. Social media platforms can be great places for inspiration and ideas, but often they can lead people astray—or to possibly injury.

Whether it’s introducing proper form, giving them the confidence to properly use the equipment, or taking their athleticism to elite levels, working with a personal trainer at an early age can provide a safe path to do so. Two of our top trainers weighed in on the benefits of coaching in the gym setting.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 6 + years

WHAT ARE THE GENERAL BENEFITS OF STARTING PERSONAL TRAINING AT A YOUNG AGE? The physical benefits are the development of stronger bones and muscles, cardiovascular health improvement, and increased coordination and brain function.

DO YOU HAVE TO BE AN ATHLETE TO START TRAINING? Certainly not. Any person of any physical ability can train to their personal capacity.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE KIDS WHO DO NOT HAVE EXPERIENCE IN THE GYM? If your experience is limited, introduce yourself to training with an attitude geared toward learning the basics. Find the exercises and workouts you gravitate toward, and don’t be afraid to ask for help or advice from those who have experience.

FOR KIDS WHO ARE SEASONED ATHLETES, OR INTERESTED IN TAKING SPORTS TO THE NEXT LEVEL, HOW CAN PERSONAL TRAINING HELP THEM? For athletes, training can be the mechanical booster that can make the difference between a faster pitch in baseball, a stronger tackle in football, or a quicker direction change in basketball. There are many more examples, but in general, mechanics based around a sport can be greatly improved with the right training program.

WHAT ARE SOME BASIC TIPS FOR A FIRST-TIMER? Come with a general plan for time spent and number of exercises. Try to record your weight numbers for exercises that use weights, or times tracked for speed exercises. Be sure to wear clothing that is comfortable and that you don’t mind sweating in. Stay hydrated throughout your workout. Lastly, arrive with the goal to self-improve and learn more!

WHO ARE SOME INFLUENCERS OR PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES YOU THINK ARE GOOD EXAMPLES FOR KIDS TO FOLLOW? Although I don’t have a strong opinion on fitness influencers in particular, I think it is important that youth choose the right content to expose themselves to, and to manage their expectations and logic when it comes to things like physical capacity, body image and health.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SAY TO YOUNGER CLIENTS? It is exciting to see younger people start to catch on to fitness. For me, it has helped me in so many different angles of my life, and I’m always happy to see the same positive changes it can do for others.

"It is exciting to see younger people start to catch on to fitness."

NAME: NICK KORPI YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 20+ years

WHAT ARE THE GENERAL BENEFITS OF STARTING PERSONAL TRAINING AT A YOUNG AGE? The benefits are overall health, fitness and sports performance.

DO YOU HAVE TO BE AN ATHLETE TO START TRAINING? No, anyone can start a training program. I have worked with youth as young as 8 years old.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE KIDS WHO DO NOT HAVE EXPERIENCE IN THE GYM? Just come in, and try it out. You can't get any better if you don't train. You have to start somewhere!

FOR KIDS WHO ARE SEASONED ATHLETES, OR INTERESTED IN TAKING SPORTS TO THE NEXT LEVEL, HOW CAN PERSONAL TRAINING HELP THEM? Increased strength, injury reduction, speed, agility, quickness, reduction of body fat, increased lean body mass, increased cardiovascular endurance, self-confidence, increased bone density.

WHAT ARE SOME BASIC TIPS FOR A FIRST-TIMER? Bring a water bottle, wear comfortable athletic shoes and clothing.  Come ready to learn and reach your goals.

WHO ARE SOME INFLUENCERS OR PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES YOU THINK ARE GOOD EXAMPLES FOR KIDS TO FOLLOW? David Goggins, George St.Pierre, Chad Wesley Smith, Cal Dietz

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SAY TO YOUNGER CLIENTS? If you want to reach your goals start training!

BELLEVUE PD’S

BEST BOYS

The Bellevue Police Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports the Bellevue Police Department with many special programs and events. One of their divisions, however, helps produce some extra special good boys for our community’s safety. Here’s the history behind the beloved K-9 fleet.

The K-9 program began in 1973, and it was one of the first in the state. Since, they have purchased and trained dozens of dogs—mostly German shepherds or Belgian Malinois—and spent more than 300 hours training them to assist officers.

“There are a few ways our dogs add skills to the team of officers,” says Officer Scott White. “First, they increase security for our officers during difficult and dangerous situations. Also, you can’t replicate their noses with any form of technology. It’s a tool that is very unique.”

“When we send a dog in pursuit of a suspect, all they need is the smallest scent. It could be as little as a few skins cells left in a car,” says Officer Ben Bradley, handler for Walter (the dog seen in the photos).

Once the dogs, like Walter, have a scent, they will track suspects hiding or on the run with a quickness and relentlessness that is unmatched. Then, they are trained to bite suspects, holding them down until officers can arrive to the scene.

But, they are far from vicious dogs when they aren’t commanded to pursue criminals on the run.

“Our dogs each have their own personalities. Most have zero hard feelings; they are in it for the pets—they want all the loves,” says Officer Robin Peacey, lead officer of the K-9 program. “We pick out the dogs based on sociability and prey drive.”

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH THE ADORABLE DOGS

And part of the reason why these dogs are this way is because of the specific training methods. While these dogs are “bite dogs,” they are trained using only positive reinforcement.

“About eight years ago, we switched our approach to K-9 training drastically. We went from a more negative reinforcement to positive reinforcement system,” Peacey says. “And it made such a difference."

by

We met Walter one summer evening, and found out just how amazing these dogs, and the officers that work them, truly are.

ALL ABOUT WALTER

FACTS FROM HIS BEST BUD AND HANDLER, OFFICER BEN BRADLEY

HIS BACKGROUND:

Walter is a mix of German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois. He turned 4 in June. He has been with me for about three years, and he has been certified as a police dog since September of 2021.

WAY TO HIS HEART:

His favorite treat is duck jerky.

BIGGEST CASE:

Last year, a total of seven suspects stole two cars from an apartment complex in Bellevue. One of the stolen cars rammed a Kirkland Police Officers car, and two suspects fled from it. One of the suspects was caught on foot by a patrol officer. The other suspect was tracked and located by one of our other dogs, K9 Kole. The other stolen vehicle was partially disabled by spike strips, and then crashed a few miles later. The suspects fled from that vehicle as well. K9 Walter tracked them for over a mile and located three suspects.

WEIRD HABIT:

His weirdest quirk is that he will eat anything that fits down his throat: small balls, sticks, stuffed animals and occasionally pieces of gravel.

TRAINING TIP:

Dogs will work way harder for positive rewards than they will to avoid being punished. Read the book "Don’t Shoot the Dog" by Karen Pryor. You will learn about, and understand, operant conditioning, and the sky is the limit for what you can train a dog to do.

HOBBIES:

When he’s not working, Walter enjoys playing fetch, playing with the dog next door, and most of all, being pet.

BEST QUALITY:

Police K-9s are often unsung heroes of police work. Unlike humans, they don’t choose this line of work. Yet they love it and go to work every day excited.

the pampered pooch

Whether chasing a squirrel or enjoying a belly rub, healthy dogs are paragons for the good life. They instinctively live in the moment and delight in life’s simple pleasures. Their love is pure, loyalty strong, and happiness contagious, which can have profound effects on our well-being.

Research backs this up, indicating that simply petting our furry friends can reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) and boost oxytocin (the “love” hormone), enhancing relaxation and happiness. And dogs’ playful energy and need for regular exercise can motivate us to be more active.

To be good human companions in this symbiotic relationship, we owe our dogs good caretaking. Opinions may vary on the optimal approach to doggy care, but the consensus among vets is that it requires dedication, daily exercise, sound sleep, socialization, routine check-ups, proper hygiene, and a balanced diet.

Dan Gilmore, Bellevue Club’s executive chef and known dog-devotee, says that he believes lots of love and a variety of good food is fundamental to dogs’ health and well-being. “I feed my two Great Pyrenees—Mr. Nuggy Thunderpaws and Greta— a combination of raw food and kibbles,” says Gilmore. He discovered the benefits of raw food as part of a mixed diet when his former dog was suffering from digestive trouble. “After experimenting with different diets, we found that including raw food relieved some of her symptoms.”

“My dogs love raw food, but preparing it takes time that not everybody has,” Gilmore explains, which is what inspired him to create Canine Chow, the Club’s raw dog food and tasty treats (available for purchase through the Butcher Shop on the Bellevue Club app). The Club follows strict safety guidelines, and their recipes are based on recommendations from veterinarians and pet nutritionists to ensure a healthy balance of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.

“Members like the ease and convenience of being able to pick up food for their dogs in the market. We also offer a menu for doggy room service in the hotel, and we plan to offer a doggy brunch on the Polaris patio in the fall,” he shares.

THE RAW FOOD REVOLUTION

Dog diets have evolved over time along with their relationships with us. In the wild, dogs foraged and ate raw meat. As they became domesticated, they increasingly relied on human scraps, which included a mix of vegetables, meat, and grains. Industrialization created the possibility and market for commercial dog food, which is now incredibly diverse, catering to a wide range of dietary preferences and health needs.

Raw food in its modern gourmet form is now de rigueur. It grew in popularity alongside trends for more “natural” diets, free from additives, unnecessary processing, and occasional food recalls from distrusted commercial markets.

Pet owners’ observations and some research show that raw food can improve dogs’ digestion, increase energy levels, and support healthy teeth, skin, and coats. The benefits are many, but there are also some associated risks, such as bacterial infections if the raw food is not prepared correctly or if dogs eat only raw meat, which could lead to nutritional imbalances.

“Everyone should do their own research and consult a vet to learn what’s best for their dog,” emphasizes Gilmore. As for his dogs, he says their wagging tails, sparkling eyes, and unwavering exuberance have made it clear what they think of the Club’s recipes.

SAFETY GUIDELINES

• Consult your veterinarian or a pet nutritionist to understand your dog’s dietary needs, based on age, weight, activity level, and overall health condition.

• Introduce raw food gradually by mixing in small amounts of new food with your dog’s current food.

• Select quality, human-grade ingredients and include a variety of meat sources. Most meats are available from butchers and fishmongers. Many are now available online.

• Follow basic sanitation rules. Avoid cross-contamination by using separate utensils and cutting boards, and thoroughly wash hands, utensils, and surfaces before and after handling food.

• Prepare food in batches and, after proper cooling, freeze in daily mealsized portions for convenience. Determine portion sizes based on your dog’s caloric needs. Thaw daily portions in the refrigerator to minimize bacterial growth

• Maintain regular vet check-ups to ensure proper nutritional needs are being met.
