SPRING IS OFTEN THOUGHT OF AS A SEASON FOR RENEWAL.
Many people use the time to clean up their home, disposing of old things and practices. We believe this concept can also apply to your wellness. It’s a good opportunity to think about small (or big) ways you can improve your health. Are there certain habits you can start or stop to help you feel optimal? In this issue, we talked with two doctors who can help. Dr. Mehri Moore is a local pioneer in the women’s mental health field. She built a revolutionary facility dedicated to addressing the roots of mental illness—depression and anxiety. You can read about her mission on page 48. We also talked with Dr. Maria Mercado, an endocrinologist who gives expert tips for traveling with diabetes. Her advice is highly practical and might just make your next trip a whole lot safer and easier. Read her advice on page 34. If you want quick ways to tweak your wellness routine, check out basketball trainer Antonio Chavers’ workout on page 30. Or get inspired to cook some of the healthiest recipes on Earth taken from the Blue Zones on page 40.

BELLEVUE COLLEGE LAUNCHES ‘LANDED’ TO HELP ITS EMPLOYEES BUY HOMES As cost of living in the Seattle area rises, Bellevue College is becoming the first higher education institution to partner with a program that helps school employees afford homes. The program, Landed, started in 2015 and migrated to the Seattle area in October 2018 with a partnership with Bellevue School District. In the months since, Landed has given home buying or financial wellness resources to more than 100 BSD employees, three of whom have successfully closed on homes.

DAC FOUNDATION
Founded in 1887, the Detroit Athletic Club has been a staple of the city’s social scene for more than a century, hosting presidents, kings and prominent figures in the automobile industry such as Henry Ford. The club is currently voted No. 1 Athletic Club in America. Established on historic Madison Avenue, the club is near many of the city’s unique attractions, including the famous Music Hall. The roof-top plaza level of the building provides beautiful 360-degree views including Comerica Park and other venues.
The club features a six-story clubhouse designed by renowned architect Robert Kahn in an ornate Renaissance style. Inside, full athletic facilities await you, complete with a pool on the fourth floor. Multiple dining options, social spaces and sleeping rooms round out the offerings. For the founders, an important goal was to create a foundation to give back to the community. Since then, the DAC Foundation has supported numerous athletes and scholars as they reach toward their goals. For more information, visit thedac.com.

WELLNESS
A LITTLE DROP WILL DO traveling can take a heavy toll on the body, and in particular the immune system. To keep frequent flyers happy and healthy, DoTERRA perfected an immune-boosting oil blend called On Guard; it’s an all-natural preventive for colds on crowded planes. Complete with cinnamon, eucalyptus and rosemary oils, the therapeutic remedy can be taken internally, diffused or, as suggested by the website, added to sliced apples for a surprisingly tasty boost! REASONS TO ADD CRAWLING TO YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE you might think you’d look like a baby, or some sort of animal for that matter, but crawling is topping the list of physical therapists’ go-to moves. Crawling, jumping, climbing and balancing all fall into a category called fundamental movements. Essentially, these are actions we learn when we’re young, but then we lose the ability to do with age if not practiced. According to the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy, testing your ability to do these types of movements can determine if you possess or lack essential strength and functionality.
bellevue club april 2019 | 27
the best part? this total-body workout can be done at home with no equipment.
TONES CORE
This movement stimulates your arms and legs as they move, but it’s your core that maintains the shape of your crawl. RESETS CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
Placing wrists under your shoulders and knees under your hips, like a table, maintain a flat back while lifting your knees one to three inches off the ground and hover. Then, using your core, hold your position hovering over the ground while alternating hand and foot movements to move forward and backward or left and right. The key is to keep your core tight and back flat; if you need help, a well-placed plate on the lower back can serve as a positioning reminder. You might feel funny the first time you try it, but the benefits are well worth the time.
28 | april 2019 reflections
Crawling stimulates your central nervous system and instinctively forces your body parts to work together and build a connection. TRAINS BALANCE
Balance and stability are your body’s natural inclinations to anticipate and adjust to stimuli before they happen, while maintaining an upright or desired (crawling) position. BENEFITS BRAIN
Crawling activates your corpus callosum, which is the broad band of nerve fibers joining the two sides of your brain. Essentially, as you strengthen your arms, legs and core, you’re also strengthening these brain tissues.

basketball skills and drills bellevue club basketball trainer antonio chavers shares five exercises to improve your game.
30 | april 2019 reflections
on-court drills
SINGLE HAND BALL-CONE CONTROL Line up five cones in a straight line, roughly two feet apart. Stand at one end in an athletic stance. Start with your right hand, and quickly dribble the ball continuously as you weave through all the cones and back two times. Switch the ball to your left hand and travel up and back twice. Benefits: Ball-cone control is important because dribbling is a major part of basketball and isolated ball control advances performance.
FORM SHOOTING Stand in an athletic stance two feet from the rim (middle, left or right). Using your dominant hand only, rest the ball in a shooting position and then perform your natural shot. Perform 10 shots from the middle, right and left court positions. Then, return to a twohanded position and perform 10 more from each point. Benefits: Isolated one-hand shooting helps with ball control.
bellevue club april 2019 | 31
off-court drills HURDLES Set up four hurdles in a row roughly two feet apart. Stand next to the first hurdle and jump over all four without stopping. Once you get to the other side, return and repeat. Perform three reps down and back twice. Benefits: Simultaneous lateral and vertical movements advance athleticism on the court.
BOX JUMPS Using a box that is appropriate in height for your skill level, start in an athletic stance. Jump vertically onto the box and repeat three reps of 10. Be sure to take your time with each jump. Don’t rush. Benefits: Intense action that increases vertical jumping abilities.
BALL JACKS Start by holding a weighted basketball (or medicine ball) in a standing position. Perform a jumping jack motion; however, lift the ball above your head with the arms instead of raising them out to the side. Perform three sets of 10. Benefits: This full-body exercise uses a variation of the stand jumping jack to increase endurance and strength.

Maria Mercado, MD, an endocrinologist at Overlake Medical Center, shares tips for traveling with diabetes.
When Dr. Maria Mercado was a young med student, she and her parents were traveling from the Philippines to London when her mother had a major medical scare. She ran out of her diabetes medication and her blood pressure rose dangerously high. “A doctor had to come to our hotel room, and we had no clue what she was taking,” she says. “Then I had to rush on the Tube and get to the nearest pharmacy.” For Mercado, who spoke little English at the time, the experience was unsettling. That event encouraged her to pursue endocrinology, and she now spends a great deal of time educating her patients on how to travel safely with both types of diabetes.

PREVALENCE IN SENIORS The percentage of Americans age 65 and older remains high, at 25.2 percent, or 12.0 million seniors (diagnosed and undiagnosed). NEW CASES 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year.

PREDIABETES In 2015, 84.1 million Americans age 18 and older had prediabetes. DEATHS Diabetes remains the seventh leading cause of death in the United States in 2015, with 79,535 death certificates listing it as the underlying cause, and a total of 252,806 death certificates listing diabetes as an underlying or contributing cause of death.

THE F L I GHT TSA
TSA doesn’t require a letter, but some patients feel more comfortable traveling with a doctor’s note explaining why they carry syringes, needles and other testing supplies. If you wear a continuous glucose monitor, you can’t go through the X-rays, so opt for the pat-down method. THE FLIGHT
During takeoff and landing, the air pressure changes can cause insulin pumps to dispense an incorrect amount of insulin. Dr. Mercado suggests turning the pump off for takeoff and landing, and then turning it back on as soon as you hit cruising level.
W HI LE THE R E COMMUNICATION
If you’re going to a non-English-speaking country, learn key phrases in the native language. Learn how to say, “I am diabetic [including the type]” and “Where is the pharmacy?” or “I’m on insulin” and “I have low blood sugar.” It helps to write these phrases down too. Also be aware that different countries use different units of measurement with different values. FOOD AND ALCOHOL
Be sure to have snacks on hand if you have a long layover. Alcohol can have all kinds of effects on blood sugar, depending on the sugar content of the drink and type of diabetes. It’s best to keep consumption very low or to avoid altogether.

There might not be a magic pill to help you live longer, but it turns out there might be a few magic places that can offer just that. The average human’s life expectancy is about 72 years. Here in Washington State, we’re fortunate to have one of the best life expectancies in the country, averaging 82 years. As exciting as those numbers are, there are several other places across the globe that average 90–100 years.

IKARIA, GREECE
This island’s residents are several times more likely to reach 90-plus years than the rest of the world. Most residents have very little stressors in their day to day; the average activities and work include maintaining a home or garden, being near the sea, walking in nature as well as eating and harvesting fresh foods. Their diet is based on home-grown vegetables and their exercise comes naturally because walking is the easiest form of transportation around the island. To top it off, there’s a big social factor in Ikarian longevity, according to Dan Buettner, the New York Times best-selling author of The Blue Zones Solution: Eating and Living Like the World’s Healthiest People. Buettner’s studies also include several recipes (some listed below) to make Blue Zone living accessible for all. Family ties are very important in this region and houses often contain multiple generations, which means older Ikarians maintain an active social life with age and rarely live alone.

• Steam the potatoes in a large saucepan by placing them in one to two inches of water. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer until potatoes are easily pierced. Drain potatoes and transfer to a large salad bowl. • Mix seeds, oil, vinegar and oregano, and add a third of the mixture to the potatoes. Cover bowl and place in fridge to cool. Set the rest of the dressing aside at room temperature. • Add the lettuce, arugula and mint leaves to the potatoes once cooled, and toss. Add garnish of your choosing (recommended: chopped almonds, scallions), eggs plus salt and pepper to taste.

INGREDIENTS 1½ cups unbleached all-purpose flour 1½ cups semolina flour 1 envelope active dry yeast 1½ cups warm water Sprinkle of fresh chopped rosemary Salt PREPARATION • Combine the two flours with about a teaspoon of salt. • In a small cup, dissolve the yeast in about 1/4 cup of the warm water, and let sit until bubbly. • Add the yeast mixture to the flour with the rest of the water. • Mix until dough is smooth, then cover and let sit one hour. Knead for five minutes and cover for another hour. • Preheat the oven to 475 degrees F. • Spray two flat baking sheets with oil. • Knead the dough once more and divide into eight equal balls.
OGLIASTRA, SARDINIA
The Ogliastra region rests on the highlands of an Italian island. With a well-rounded Mediterranean diet, the population is likely to live into their 100s. Goat milk is listed as one of the reasons these people are so healthy and leaders in low cholesterol. The population sees lower rates of diabetes, cancer and death under the age of 65 than almost any other region in the world. Flatbread and sourdough are staples for Sardinians. High in fiber and complex carbohydrates, they don’t cause a blood sugar spike like most processed or refined carbs.

• Roll each ball out as thinly as you can to fit the baking sheets, and bake each for five minutes in the preheated oven. The breads should blister but not yet brown. • Remove from the oven and pile one on top of the other. Place a board or flat tray on top and let sit until cool. • To prepare for serving, return each bread to the oven for 10 minutes, or until golden and crispy. • Remove from the oven, brush lightly with olive oil, sprinkle with fresh chopped rosemary and salt, and return to the oven for a few minutes. • Let cool, break apart and serve.
LOMA LINDA, CALIFORNIA
Loma Linda, California, is home to the highest concentration of Seventh-day Adventists in the US. This population of 9,000 has an average life expectancy that’s 10 years more than that of most Americans. Their biblical diet of grains, fruits, nuts and vegetables is widely attributed to their longevity. With an emphasis on exercise and no consumption of alcohol, this group’s members view health as a central piece of their faith. KALE, SPINACH AND COCONUT SOUP
INGREDIENTS 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil ½ cup sliced yellow onion 4 cloves garlic, smashed 10 cups kale, roughly chopped 5 cups spinach 3 cups arugula Two 13½-ounce cans coconut milk 32 ounces vegetable broth ½ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg 2 teaspoons salt PREPARATION 1. In a large pot, over medium-high heat, warm the olive oil. Add the onions and garlic and sauté until transparent. 2. Add half of the kale, spinach and arugula and cook until the leaves begin to wilt. Add the remainder of the greens to those already in the pot, and continue to cook until all the greens have wilted and reduced in volume. Take care not to overcook the greens; you only want to wilt them. Overcooking them will reduce the nutritive value of this soup. 3. Add both cans of the coconut milk, stirring to incorporate into the greens. Cook about three minutes. 4. Working in batches, transfer some of the greens and coconut milk mixture to a blender. Begin to blend on low and gradually increase the power. Through the feeder, add the vegetable broth and continue to blend until completely smooth. Feel free to use more or less, depending on whether you want a thick or thin bisque. Transfer the blended mixture into a large container. • Mix in the nutmeg, add salt to taste and serve immediately.

NICOYA PENINSULA, COSTA RICA
Residents of the Nicoya Peninsula in Central America have the world’s lowest rate of middleaged mortality and the second-highest concentration of male centenarians (second only to Loma Linda, California) according to National Geographic. Their ability to live into the 100s is attributed to a strong faith-based community with a reliance on social networks and regular, low-intensity exercise. With a healthy amount of sun, a balanced and natural diet, a physical labor force and plenty of water, the people on the Nicoya Peninsula also see fewer deaths from cancer, lower cholesterol and rates of diabetes. Not to mention, without any technology these communities report much less stress than those with cell phones and readily available internet. 46 | april 2019 reflections
1. Warm the oil in a large saucepan set over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring often, until softened, about three minutes. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 20 seconds. 2. “Eating disorders are often symptoms of underlying issues—a mix of anxiety and depression. Those are the real roots of the problem,”
Moore says empowering women hits home hard for her. She was raised in Tehran, Iran, where the life choices for women are limited. At a young age, she made the complex and dangerous decision to immigrate to the UK and eventually the US to pursue a career in medicine. She landed in Seattle at the University of Washington and started working in psychiatry and family therapy. During the first few years, she began to take an interest in eating disorder patients and became the medical director at Swedish Ballard for the eating disorder programs. The Moore Center quickly followed. THIRA is the result of all the experience she accumulated along the way. “It’s an opus of sorts,” she says.
50 | april 2019 reflections
At THIRA, however, she is focused on a broader goal. “Eating disorders are often symptoms of underlying issues—a mix of anxiety and depression. Those are the real roots of the problem,” Moore says. To address anxiety and depression, she created two pillars. The first is nutritional education. At the center, patients are fed three organic meals a day plus snacks and are also educated about the connection between nutrition and mood dysregulation. The second pillar is community engagement, in which the women become active with volunteer programs or other interesting activities within and outside the center.

BY the NUMBERS 70% of teens say anxiety/depression is a major problem among peers Part of the second pillar is the use of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). “DBT is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy that is combined with elements of eastern Zen philosophy. It’s dialectical because these two elements of change and acceptance are at play simultaneously,” she says. “It is an innovative approach that Dr. Marsha Linehan developed in the late ’80s/early ’90s. It’s an evidence-based form of therapy, and it’s been very effective for people with mood dysregulation.” With DBT, patients are taught mindfulness and how to express themselves using different mediums—such as art therapy and other nonverbal modalities. “Art gives our patients a meditative space to focus on being present and using feelings and emotions to express intimate and personal experiences, whether it’s trauma-based or shame or guilt,” Moore says. Fine arts are one way to do this, but she also advocates the use of drama, music and movement to aid in healing. “Having all the senses participate in recovery is just as important as changing behavior and cognition.” Moore and the staff at THIRA have helped more than 1,000 patients in the short time since they have been open, and she is looking forward to helping many more by cultivating the safe space.

British Columbia's Vancouver Island is best known for its southernmost colonial-era city, Victoria. But this vast island stretches nearly 300 miles from end to end and is home to rugged wilderness, old-growth forests, mountain peaks and gorgeous beaches. On the west side, the little surf town of Tofino is making waves as an adventure and culinary destination. Summers, while fabulous, can be crowded, so try a visit in the shoulder seasons or throw caution to the wind and experience a wild winter storm (considered a “signature experience by Destination Canada, the former Canadian Tourism Commission).

TOFINO RESORT
W H E R E T O S TAY For a little surf town, Tofino has a great range of lodging options. Luxury resorts like Long Beach Lodge Resort and the Wickaninnish Inn along the Pacific coast provide serene comfort within a shell’s throw of the ocean, while Tofino Resort + Marina, located a few kilometers inland along Tofino Harbour, features views of wooded islands and mountains beyond.
L O N G B E AC H L O D G E R E S O R T Built in 2002 to resemble a West Coast residence, this hotel offers 41 guest rooms and 20 private cottages along eight acres of oceanfront property (family-friendly with pet-friendly options). It is the only “surf-in/ surf-out” property in Tofino, and its Surf Club Adventure Centre features spa-like amenities including an outdoor hot pool, sauna, showers and changing rooms. At the Surf Club you can rent surf- and SUP-board equipment and book lessons. Longbeachlodgeresort.com THE WICKANINNISH INN “The Wick” has been part of the Tofino shores since the mid-1950s, but its current incarnation began in 1996. The resort now includes beachfront accommodations along Chesterman Beach, the Ancient Cedars Spa, dining options and a fitness facility. The hotel is filled with incredible wood sculptures and carvings—even the beams were hand-adzed by Henry Nolla, the inn’s longtime neighbor. Though Nolla passed away in 2004, his carving shed (open to guests during “business” hours) remains occupied by artists continuing the craft. Wickinn.com TOFINO RESORT + MARINA Recently remodeled with comfortable Austrian-style King beds, the King suites also feature separate living room spaces with pullout beds. This is the only resort close to the town of Tofino, making it a perfect location for checking out the local dining and shopping scene. W H E R E T O E AT & D R I N K All three resorts have great restaurants on-site. At Tofino Resort, 1909 Kitchen serves fantastic wood-fired pizzas as well as numerous entrées featuring Chef Paul Moran’s locally foraged ingredients and Michelin-starred culinary experience from Pujol in Mexico City. Or try local beers and tasty pub grub in the Hatch next door. If you only dine in one place during your stay, make it Wolf in the Fog, named Best New Restaurant by Air Canada’s enRoute magazine in 2014. Chef Nick Nutting brings Tofino’s best local fishermen, foragers and farmers to the forefront with inventive brunch, lunch and dinner menus. The potato-crusted oyster is a must—a succulent Pacific oyster wrapped in a nest of shoestring potatoes and deep-fried to crisp perfection atop a bed of pickled leeks with truffle. While you’re at it, pair it with a Cedar Sour from the excellent cocktail menu—cedar-infused rye, lemon, thyme and egg white. Over on scenic Industrial Way, stop in at Picnic Charcuterie for its selection of cured meats, cheeses, pickles and preserves. They’ll pack all that deliciousness onto a platter to take across the way to Tofino Brewing Co. or Tofino Distillery (try the absinthe!). When your sweet tooth strikes, only Chocolate Tofino will do—the quality is impressive in this tiny chocolate chapel. Truffles, bars and house-made gelato will satisfy that craving and then some.

W H AT T O D O The beach rules this surf town. Now that the Olympics committee approved surfing as sport for the 2020 games, those men and women riding the waves are potential gold-medal winners. Founded in 1999 to encourage more women to try the sport, Surf Sister is the largest all-female surf school in the world with more than 30 instructors. The gear shop also caters toward a mostly female audience. Surfing is a year-round sport in Tofino. And, yes, wet suits are required. Enjoy the water from the relatively dry comfort of a boat with a kayak tour by Tofino Sea Kayaking. The afternoon-length tours take guests into the Clayoquot Sound past numerous islands harboring wildlife such as bald eagles and other aquatic birds.
Or hop aboard a boat at Tofino Resort + Marina’s Adventure Centre for a longer tour of the sound. During the summer months, the wildlife count may include bears, wolves, seals, porpoises and occasionally whales. Throw in a crab pot or two and catch your dinner. Chef Moran at 1909 Kitchen will prepare your catch at dinner. Winter activities include an epic storm-watching season. With nothing between Tofino and Japan but ocean, weather rolls in on a grand scale. “The Wick” offers Storm Watchers packages that include special rates, brunches, wine and cheese, a book of stormthemed stories and oilskin hats. Book a suite and watch those storms rage from the comfort of your bubble bath.
