e d i t o r

THIS ISSUE IS ALL ABOUT KEEPING YOUR FAMILY HEALTHY, HAPPY AND INSPIRED.

RE FLEC TIONS MAGAZINE

We started in the kitchen, the heart of the home. Member and mom extraordinaire Carrie Roberts shared the story behind her app, Sift. Its primary function is to decode the plethora of ingredients found in our food with the hope of keeping harmful chemicals out of your diet. You can read more about Sift on page 48. In an effort to get kids interested in cooking healthy dinners, food writer Kelli Terpsma came up with a fun, educational approach to family movie night. She wrote a guide to cooking foods from your favorite movies. She focused on a recipe inspired by Pixar’s Ratatouille, but the concept can be applied to any genre or age group. Check it out on page 32. With dinner taken care of, we turned to Arthur Emery for some advice on school, an often sensitive subject to navigate. Emery is an Eastside tutor who spends a lot of his time thinking about the current challenges and pressures young students face. He says it’s tougher than ever for kids to balance school, sports and social lives, and sometimes they need a little help. That’s where he comes in. Read about his company, The Learning Professionals, on page 38. Lastly, this issue contains our annual Youth Newsletter on page 68. We’ve added some new options this year, so be sure to give it a close read. There’s something for everyone!

FORMER SENATOR JOE FAIN RECOGNIZED FOR STUDENT PRESS RIGHTS LEGISLATION The Washington Journalism Education Association (WJEA) has awarded former State Senator Joe Fain the national Journalism Education Association Friend of Scholastic Journalism Award for his sponsorship of student press rights legislation that became law in 2017. The award, which is the only award that WJEA gives to a non-educator, was presented to Fain at the WJEA board of directors retreat on June 22 at the Mercer Island Community Center. Fain, who served the 47th District for eight years and is currently president and CEO of the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce, introduced SB 5064 and worked with WJEA to receive almost unanimous bipartisan support for the bill. The bill states that public high schools and colleges across Washington must adopt a policy allowing student journalists to report on any topic without censorship as long as they follow professional standards.

“TO ACHIEVE GREAT THINGS, WE MUST FIRST DREAM.” —COCO CHANEL

StrotherDerm.com

C

hildhood is magical — because no dream is out of reach. It truly is a time when anything and everything feels possible. As a little girl growing up in a tiny town in Carnation, I’d often imagine the kind of life I wanted when I grew up. The two things I knew is that I was an artist, and that uplifting other people made me happy. Like famed French fashion designer Coco Chanel — I set out to blaze my own path and it led to the perfect career for me: dermatology. I believe that the art of aesthetics comes from within my creative soul. I look at each client like a beautiful canvas and provide enhancement options that look natural — with the ultimate goal of helping restore confidence. Coco Chanel once said that if a woman dresses shabbily, they notice the dress. If she dresses impeccably, they notice the woman. I feel the same exact way about a woman in her own skin. And at Strother Dermatology in Kirkland, I have the opportunity to use my talents to make women feel their best — and then, they are unstoppable.

THREE KEY DIFFERENCES What sets this equipment apart from the pack:

1. NONMOTORIZED BELT

“It is a passive or resistance belt. This means the athlete isn’t pulled by the belt; they are pushing the belt. This is closer to what happens in real life.”*

2. A ROUNDED SURFACE

“The impact of the foot is smoother when running and walking due to the smaller distance between the foot and the belt.”

3. MUSCLE RECRUITMENT

“When the resistance is increasing, all the muscles that are involved with forward acceleration of the body are excited and activated at the highest level. ” For more information, visit Technogym.com.

READING CORNER

BOOKS FOR KIDS Eat your veggies, get plenty of sleep and brush your teeth twice daily: These are just some of the many lessons our parents pass down to us as we grow up to prepare us for basic lifelong wellness routines. Studies show that reading with your children is another fundamental routine that leads to lifelong benefits. A 2014 study by the American Academy of Pediatrics found that reading to infants “exerts a positive effect on the developing brain.” Reading to kids does more than increase brain function and make them smarter; other research by Emory University found that kids and teens who read develop more empathy and emotional literacy than those who don’t. It’s never too early to prepare your child for success, so pick up one of these fun reads and get started today.

WHEN SADNESS IS AT YOUR DOOR

by Eva Eland This picture book gives parents a creative way to discuss emotions with their kids. Sadness and anger can be scary for younger kids who don’t understand what they are or why they’re feeling this way. When Sadness Is at Your Door teaches kids to approach those feelings as if you would a visitor who has a name and a personality that you can get to know and even do activities with. Eva Eland seeks to create familiarity with these emotions, through the absence of a narrative that describes these feelings as “bad,” which is an anxiety-producing notion.

HAIR LOVE

by Matthew A. Cherry and Vashti Harrison This ode to fatherdaughter relationships follows Zuri, a young girl, and her father as they attempt to tackle her extra-special hair together. Zuri’s hair has a mind of its own: it curls, kinks, coils and expands every which way, and she loves it. When her father steps in to help style it, it becomes obvious that he has a lot to learn, but he will do whatever it takes to make Zuri—and her hair—happy. Hair Love, by former NFL wide receiver Matthew Cherry and New York Times best-selling illustrator Vashti Harrison, teaches kids the importance of self-love and family.

SPEND IT!

by Cinders McLeod Spend It! is part of Cinders McLeod’s Moneybunny series that aims to teach young readers about money. In this volume, Sonny is a little bunny that earns three carrots each week for his allowance—seems like a lot of carrots for a small bunny to handle himself! Luckily, Sonny has a smart mom who helps guide him through his options, whether it be a bouncy house or treats. Eventually, after a little math and a little more thinking, he discovers the perfectly important item worth spending his carrots on.

THE SAD LITTLE FACT

by Jonah Winter and Pete Oswald Telling the truth is hard sometimes, but not for this little fact. This book follows the tale of a little fact that could not lie, but no one ever believed him. He gets locked away with all the other facts, and the world goes dark. With the help of the other facts, this sad little fact teams up with fact finders to make a daring escape and bring the truth back to brighten the world. The Sad Little Fact stands as a testament to the importance of honesty.

NUTRITION

SPROUTS AND MICROGREENS did you k now? Most leafy greens, like kale and arugula, are their most nutritious at a microgreen stage, seven to 10 days old. According to a USDA study, eating just a handful of microgreens can give you the same nutritional benefits of a salad. The research discovered that microgreens contain four to 40 times more nutrients than their mature counterparts.

t y pe s of sprou ts ALFALFA SPROUTS

With a fresh, crisp taste, they are known to enhance bone density and strength. Most of the alfalfa benefits come from its ability to encourage the production of specific hormones in the body. LENTIL SPROUTS

Small, flat and grey in color, they are usually crunchy with a nutty taste. Lentil sprouts are a great source of protein and are usually used as an addition to most vegan or vegetarian weight loss programs because they’re filling and contain important nutrients missed from animal products. BEAN SPROUTS

BENEFITS OF MICROGREENS

Each type of legume sprout has a unique flavor, usually associated with its bean form. Rich in vitamin C, bean sprouts are suggested for pregnant women and nursing mothers because they encourage growth, repair and maintenance of DNA cells.

m a k e i t ton igh t: sushi bu r r i to

With a hot, pepper-like radish flavor, radish sprouts improve liver and gallbladder function and are a health aid for people that suffer from jaundice. Women who eat radish sprouts regularly during menopause usually show fewer symptoms.

AT H L E T I C S RM: What was your favorite memory from the Western Select meet in San Diego in June? CK: The camp was a completely new experience for me, but the new friends I made helped make the new experience enjoyable. Meeting new friends and swimmers who were as fast, or even faster, than me was an eye opener and memorable experience. RM: What does swimming bring to your life? What are some lessons the sport has taught you? CK: Swimming brings stress relief, satisfaction, happiness, disappointment and pain at the same time. Swimming taught me many things that don’t always apply in the water, such as persistence, self-discipline and confidence.

SELECT SWIMMERS this spring, four athletes from the bellevue club swim team made elite usa swimming teams, where they honed their skills and made new friends. reflections checked in to see what kind of impact the experience made on them.

christian koh, 14 Reflections magazine: What does it mean to make the 2019 Western Select Team? Christian Koh: I did not realize the importance of it at first. However, after meeting and interacting with the fast swimmers that I raced with in the past, I realized how big of an opportunity this was for me. I felt great amounts of pride in being selected and felt honored to be a part of the team.

RM: What has been the biggest challenge so far? CK: The biggest challenge that I still struggle to overcome is to maintain my positive attitude despite the outcome of my race. Swimming is a sport that heavily depends on mentality, and a bad race can easily ruin that. RM: What are your future goals for swimming? CK: My final goal for swimming is to swim in the Olympics and win a medal for the 100-meter breaststroke. RM: Do you have any advice for other student athletes? CK: Some advice for my peers who strive to reach an elite level of athletics is to trust your coach, eat healthy, have fun and never give up.

WHAT ARE SELECT CAMPS?

daniel gao, 16 Reflections magazine: What does it mean to make the 2019 National Diversity Team? Daniel Gao: It’s a huge honor to train and compete with some of the best athletes of my age group. This was my first time getting exposure to my peers who share similar aspirations as me from across the country, and I enjoyed being able to learn from others. RM: What was your favorite memory from the National Diversity meet in Colorado Springs in May? DG: The last practice of camp was arguably the highlight. It was a mini-duel meet between the red and blue team, and the avidity brought from the blocks to the wall for every event was palpable. Despite it being a friendly meet, the urge to win was so apparent that you could feel the voices of your teammates in the water. It was such a great atmosphere that reminded me of the Bellevue Club and an experience that will stick with me. RM: What does swimming bring to your life? What are some lessons the sport has taught you? DG: Swimming is a way for me to forget my troubles and focus on something I have a passion for. It’s a tranquilizer that takes my mind off school and life and puts it into something that is relaxing. I think that for all sports, perseverance is a crucial lesson. Whether it’s the ups and downs of a swim meet in particular or something long term that affects you, the belief to hold firm and follow through is a skill that applies to all situations. RM: What has been the biggest challenge so far? DG: My biggest challenge is definitely being consistent at dryland. I’ve been working toward building strength in the weight room, but I feel that my goal for the summer is to challenge myself in the weight room and make sure that I’m doing what’s right for my body rather than what I want to do.

2019 national diversity select camp Each spring, USA Swimming invites 48 athletes from underrepresented populations to participate in a three-day camp program which includes pool training, motivational and education sessions and teambuilding activities. Selection is based on times swum at USA Swimming sanctioned events.

2019 western zone select camp USA Swimming sponsors four Zone Select Camps in an effort to identify the emerging young athletes in each Zone and offer them a unique motivational and educational experience. The Zone Select Camps are viewed as an integral step for athletes to move from the local and Zone level onto to the national scene.

RM: What are your future goals for swimming? DG: As of right now, I’m just focusing on one step at a time. I’m always looking for improvement and ways to give myself an edge. Long term, however, it’d be great to swim in college and be able to continue a sport that I love on the next level. RM: Do you have any advice for other student athletes? DG: Take it one step at a time and set goals along the way that are reflective of what you’re capable of. Goals are a great way to motivate yourself to work hard and achieve beyond what you thought was possible. However, it’s also important that you are being strategic and making sure that you focus on the event that’s in front of you.

bcst head coach andrew nguyen also made a splash this summer. usa swimming selected him to be one of only four head coaches nationally. he coached 2019 eastern zone select camp.

RM: What was your favorite memory from the National Diversity meet in Colorado Springs in May? AK: My favorite memory of the camp was meeting so many wonderful people from across the country. RM: What does swimming bring to your life? What are some lessons the sport has taught you? AK: Swimming brings many wonderful things to my life, such as new friendships, opportunities to compete, as well as many life lessons, such as setting and achieving goals. The sport has taught me so many valuable skills and lessons that can be applied to everyday life. For example, I need to have good time management skills and personal responsibility because swimming takes a lot of time and makes my schedule extremely busy. RM: What has been the biggest challenge so far? AK: My biggest challenges so far would either be juggling schoolwork with swimming or dealing with injuries. I had to miss many practices during the past few months due to a back injury, and it was rather difficult to get back to where I was once I recovered. RM: What are your future goals for swimming? AK: My future goals in swimming are to make Junior Nationals cuts and to swim in college. RM: Do you have any advice for other student athletes? AK: Even though there will be setbacks and the path to success is very tough, stick with it because the feeling of success is so worth it in the end. Never lose sight of your goals, and do not let anybody tell you they are unreachable.

For your next family movie night, prepare a meal from one of your favorite flicks and enjoy it before—or while—watching the movie that inspired the recipe. We recommend Pixar’s Ratatouille and creating the signature dish the movie’s premise revolves around: the idea that anyone can cook.

preparation Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Kids can help wash and dry the vegetables and peel the carrots. Using ageappropriate knives, like Curious Chef’s 3-piece Nylon Knife Set (for children ages 4+), teach kids how to cut the onion, carrots and bell pepper into small pieces and place together in a bowl. Set aside. Mince garlic and set aside. Then, slice the Chinese eggplant, zucchini and yellow squash into circles roughly an eighth of an inch thick (for best results, buy similarly sized vegetables). Place rounds on a plate and set aside. Before beginning to cook, help your kids measure and stir together the Italian seasoning, salt, dried thyme, red pepper flakes and black pepper into a small bowl.

the sauce

To create the ratatouille’s base-layer sauce, measure two tablespoons of olive oil into a large saucepan and sauté the onion, carrots and bell pepper slices on medium heat. Add the bowl of seasoning and cook for eight to 10 minutes, or until onions appear translucent, letting your kids stir mixture occasionally. Add garlic, reduce heat to low, and sauté an additional one and a half minutes. Pour in the canned tomatoes and crush each of them into small pieces with a fork. Cover and simmer on low heat until your kids can easily poke through the carrots with a fork. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Using a high-speed blender, blend the sautéed veggie mixture in two batches for one minute each, stopping every 15 seconds to let out steam. Pour sauce into a 9.5inch glass pie dish and spread evenly.

how to assemble

Beginning on the outside of the pie dish and working along the edge, layer eggplant, zucchini, and yellow squash rounds in a circle, alternating every third slice. The rounds should be overlapping, but not covering each other. When the outside circle is complete, create a second circle along the inside of the first one and continue making circles until all the sauce is covered. Drizzle with the remaining two tablespoons of olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cover the dish with tin foil and bake for 40 minutes on a rack in the middle of your oven. Then, uncover and bake an additional 30 minutes. Let cool for five to 10 minutes before serving. Top with shredded parmesan cheese, if desired.

Bellevue Club member Arthur Emery discusses how tutoring is about more than memorization

38 | august 2019 reflections

people & pl ace s

When Arthur Emery was in college at Western Washington University, he worked in the tutorial center to pick up some extra spending money and possibly help a few people along the way. Much to his surprise, a single interaction with a struggling student changed his entire life. One day he got to work and there was a student hanging out, waiting for him. The young man riffled through his backpack and, completely elated, produced a math test with a big red “93 percent” on it. Emery had tutored him, and he wanted to say thank you. “I’ve never seen anybody be so proud. And I thought: This guy is going to walk out of here and change the world today. What else will it give him the confidence to conquer? For what else will he think: I can’t do that, and then realize he absolutely can,” Emery says. The experience followed Emery long after he graduated from Western and subsequently Northwestern University law school. Once done with school, he found nothing came close to giving him that same feeling of fulfillment—not even the prospect of working at a law firm. Shortly after, he opened Learning Professionals in Bellevue. He says he knows it was the right move for him.

“There is a unique amalgamation of pressures happening right now with students, and they aren’t always equipped to deal with it,” Emery says. “They have different and more intense pressure points we didn’t have growing up.” He says those pressure points include a range of social, athletic or extracurricular, and academic factors. “The perfection piece is especially deep and pervasive. I’ve had kids tell me: ‘I’m worried I’m going to do poorly on a test, and then do badly in the class, and then not get into college.’ So they are approaching every test like it is life or death. And it really weighs on them,” he says. This pressure is producing a sharp rise in test anxiety that is undeniable. Emery approaches helping students in two ways. First is to make sure they are prepared with the correct technical information (i.e., learning formulas and facts). Emery and his team of tutors specialize in teaching all levels of math and science, history, English and essay writing, Spanish, French, ACT/SAT test prep and more. But he often finds learning the facts isn’t the hard part or the reason why most students don’t perform as well as they would like. Usually, it’s more about nerves. “We’re there for the whole student. We don’t tutor just for answers; we tutor confidence. We focus on giving them more confidence in their own skills, feeling less stress and pressure,” Emery says. “We joke that we’re mini life coaches—we elevate tutoring.” Emery teaches numerous ways to help kids get through those anxieties and perform better in testing situations. He prepares them with breathing and mindfulness exercises to employ mid-test, and has myriad ways to show them that as long as they prepare well, they will succeed. He also recognizes the other pressures kids are feeling that might be affecting their performance. “The whole social side of school . . . we can’t begin to comprehend how hard it is right now with their phones and social media. The bullying is so rampant and insidious, and they don’t get a break from it. It follows them home from school,” he says. “Add on the pressure of a packed schedule, getting into the right college, and these are all big things they’re facing. As adults we don’t always understand what that blanket feels like, but I can tell you it’s heavy. We have to think about all of it because you can’t isolate one cause.”

TEAMWORK: ARTHUR EMERY WITH TUTOR ALEXA BIGBY AND WINSTON, THE OFFICE’S FURRY FRIEND.

Emery says anxiety and depression are, without a doubt, on the rise and often lead to poor results in the classroom. Mental health among students is an important subject for Emery. Starting this September, Emery will act as president of the Bellevue Schools Foundation, the organization tasked with fundraising for Bellevue public schools, and one of his main missions is to champion anti-suicide and mentalhealth programs. He is currently working to raise nearly $300,000 for an in-school, anti-suicide and mental health awareness program for Bellevue public schools. He also began a separate fund, the Leslie Deming and Blake King Scholarship, named after his mother, Leslie, and college friend, Blake, who sadly took his own life after struggling with some of the same pressures. The fund was started in partnership with Jesse Franklin and the Bellevue-based Rainier Athletes organization. “I work through multiple avenues to help kids, and it’s a culmination of a dream of wanting to help others, wanting to re-create that feeling from that first guy who was waiting for me with his math test,” Emery says. “I’m in a privileged position to be able to affect students’ lives.” For more information, please visit learningprofessionals.com.

A Beginner’s Guide to Understanding Longevity Earlier this year, the New York Times published a study about push-ups and life expectancy. In this study, researchers found that participants who could do 40 pushups had less risk of cardiovascular problems than those who could only complete 10 or fewer. For the headline’s purposes, though, this study was branded as “the more push-ups you can do, the longer you will live.” That’s just one story among the overload of information that’s constantly circulating about living longer; the overload confuses people with contradictory studies that find avocados both healthy and not, and running both good and bad for you. In this world of too much information, there are a few terms and studies to understand that will help you on your journey for a longer, healthier life. WHAT IS LONGEVITY?

It’s easy to define “longevity” as a long life, but there’s a bit more to it when we’re discussing health and wellness. When researchers are studying longevity, they’re looking for people who have lived 100 years (centenarians), and at multiple aspects of those lives, such as health, quality of life, disabilities and any abnormalities (such as serious illnesses, cancers, etc.). In 1998, a study was released about centenarians and their well-being. It found that people who lived to be 100 were often happier with their social, financial and health situation, having fewer complaints about their health and lifestyle, than participants who were 75 or 85 years old and in similar situations. The Mayo Clinic calls this finding the “measurement of successful aging.” CHRONOLOGICAL AGE VS. PROSPECTIVE AGE

When discussing longevity, understanding the difference between chronological and prospective age is important. “Chronological age” is the term used for number of years a person has lived. “Prospective age” represents a person’s remaining years of life. This differentiation means that “age” is relative versus health indicators. Essentially, it means that while not all people live 85 years, there could be internal or biological indicators that can predict a person’s “true age,” or prospective age. For example, a 60-year-old woman who will live to 85 is chronologically older than a 55-yearold man who will live to 65, but prospectively younger because she has more years remaining in her life span.

bellevue club august 2019 | 43

BIOLOGICAL LONGEVITY INDICATORS

There are constant, ongoing studies researching the validity of biological longevity predictors. The only universally agreed-upon life-span indicator is that females live longer than males; however, this is not the type of prospectiveage indicator we’re looking for. Instead, researchers seek prospective-age indicators that can lead to improving an individual’s life span. In simpler terms, you probably won’t decide to change your gender midlife to improve your longevity, but what could you change? Telomeres may be a key to aging. They are structural “caps” at the ends of chromosomes, which act as helmets, protecting your essential DNA. As you age, your telomeres shorten, and once they’re at a “critical length,” they die. Research is currently underway to discern whether telomere length and age have a causational or correlational relationship.

44 | august 2019 reflections

Another indicator that’s currently being researched is the “epigenetic clock,” which is a biochemical test that measures your age based on DNA methylation levels. DNA methylation is the process by which methyl groups are added to DNA, which can affect your gene function (with disease, cancers, etc.). DNA methylation occurs throughout your life, due to environmental influences and lifestyle factors. To simplify, as you age, there are lifestyle and environmental factors that make markers on your DNA and can indicate your predictive age and chance of serious disease. This process and the results are the study of an individual’s epigenetic clock. The last prevailing longevity-indicator theory is based on autophagy. Autophagy is the natural regeneration process of your cells, which reduces the likelihood of disease and prolongs life span. Autophagy research has led to a better understanding of diseases such as dementia and Parkinson’s, but recently, doctors and researchers are studying the link between autophagy rates and longevity. Autophagy is the process by which cells degrade and recycle their components to provide fuel for energy and building blocks for new cells. After infections, autophagy can destroy bacteria or viruses, and cells use autophagy to remove damaged proteins to counteract the negative effects of aging on the body. Research indicates fasting as a way to “turn on” autophagy.

bellevue club august 2019 | 45

ENVIRONMENTAL AND LIFESTYLE INDICATORS

Marital status: Married people have lower mortality rates than those who were never married, divorced or widowed, according to the International Federation on Ageing. The impact that a marriage has on lowering depression, combating loneliness and motivating a person to make healthier choices is a big factor in life span. Socioeconomic status: As socioeconomic status decreases, so does life span. Socioeconomic status can affect access to medical care and participation in healthier lifestyle habits. Location: The “Blue Zones are areas along the equator where people live longer due to lifestyle, diet, exercise, and family ties. The seven zones include Sardinia in Italy; Okinawa, Japan; Loma Linda, California; Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica; and Ikaria, Greece. Education: More education is linked to better health outcomes and brings longer life expectancy. Health, wealth and education all relate to one another.

SHOP, SCAN & SIFT Bellevue Club member Carrie Roberts created her app, Sift Food Labels, with one question in mind: How many ingredients are found in our foods that are banned in other places? The information she found was so shocking, scary and frustrating that she eventually quit her day job as a marketing strategist and turned her attention toward educating people about what’s hiding in their pantries.

48 | august 2019 reflections

people & pl ace s

CARRIE ROBERTS IS A SELF-DESCRIBED DATA NERD.

So when she developed gestational diabetes while pregnant with her first son five years ago, she turned to research. To keep the disease under control, she began to monitor her sugar intake. In doing so, she dove deep into understanding the numbers and information found on nutritional labels. “There are more than 100 words for sugar approved for use on our food labels in America,” Roberts says, which was frustrating for someone trying to eliminate sugar for a serious health condition. “Also, ingredients are listed in order of the amount present in the food, and some companies will use two, three or four different words for sugar so it’s not listed higher. What they’re doing is sneaky.”

bellevue club august 2019 | 49

“There are more than 3,000 food additives approved for use,” Roberts says. “And a lot of these additives are banned in other countries and recognized as harmful to people’s health.”

50 | august 2019 reflections

THIS IS WHERE HER OBSESSION WITH INGREDIENTS REALLY TOOK OFF. SHE SOON DISCOVERED HIDDEN SUGARS WEREN’T THE ONLY PROBLEM.

“There are more than 3,000 food additives approved for use,” Roberts says. “And a lot of these additives are banned in other countries and recognized as harmful to people’s health.” In her research, she found that 80 percent of food found in the average American pantry contains ingredients banned in other countries. And unfortunately, most of them are lurking in kids’ foods because of the colors or for the sweet taste—their taste buds are more drawn to that. Among the most harmful, she says, are the artificial colors and the long list of known carcinogens. “I learned a ton in that time about food regulation and how lenient we are in this country. I assumed the FDA was regulating this stuff, but they aren’t, and a lot of it has to do with how much time and money the food companies are spending on lobbying the government.” At the time, her only answer was to spend hours in the grocery store each week combing the ingredient lists of the food she was feeding her family. “And inevitably, I’d come home and realize I still missed something. There are just so many things to watch out for and so many tricks the food companies use.” Roughly three years ago, after tons of research and reading, Roberts woke from a nap with an epiphany. “There has to be an easier way to make healthy choices,” she says. Her immediate response was to search for an app on her phone. There was nothing. So she decided to develop one. Working in the tech industry for most of her career, she knew the possibilities were endless. The result is Sift, an app and company she created with the purpose of informing consumers about what they put into their bodies. Right now, the app uses bar-code-scanning technology to list and flag ingredients. It also provides information about why the ingredients are harmful and banned in other countries.

bellevue club august 2019 | 51

“It opens up many different paths to bring more information to shoppers’ fingertips with smart shelves, smart shopping carts and more.”

“One of the most frustrating things is that the big food companies are already making products without these ingredients for other countries. But not here. They prioritize shelf life and production cost, but that comes at a different kind of price.”

The app also has a feature that allows you to follow ingredient-based dietary restrictions and plans, such as gluten-free, dairy-free, Whole30, FODMAP, Paleo and more. The feedback so far has been extremely positive, she says, and it’s only the beginning of what she has in store. Integrating artificial intelligence into the app is her next priority, and she hopes to eventually eliminate the need to scan bar codes.

“AI is something I’m really excited about,” she says. “It opens up many different paths to bring more information to shoppers’ fingertips with smart shelves, smart shopping carts and more.” One of her other goals is to tackle the online-grocery-shopping experience. As someone who uses it frequently, she is consistently frustrated with some of the inefficiencies. “It’s interesting to me that online shopping mirrors the in-store layout—you are literally shopping aisle by aisle. It needs to be rebuilt for the Internet. My question is, how do we think about using all this knowledge and tech infrastructure to create a seamless shopping experience that also educates the consumer?” She says it’s not about classifying foods as good or bad. It’s about giving people more information in an efficient, easy way. For more information, please visit siftfoodlabels.com or download the app on any smartphone.

H EAD NORTH TO T H E S U NSHINE COAST B C ’S HI D D EN T R EASU R E D ES T I NAT I O N out the window of the P eering Harbour Air floatplane, the engine

roar muffled by a set of orange earplugs, I marveled at how the landscape below could be both familiar and utterly new to my Pacific Northwest eyes. We were flying from the Vancouver, BC, waterfront to the Sunshine Coast—a piece of land northwest of the city between Vancouver Island and the mainland. Huge swaths of fir and cedar trees blanket the hilly islands below. It felt like I should recognize the landscape beneath us, but everything in BC seems grander and wilder than its Puget Sound counterpart. Mild winters and hot, dry summers make the Sunshine Coast a popular vacation home destination for Vancouverites. Without direct road access, the almostisland is only accessible by boat and floatplane. The Sunshine Coast derives its surprising (for the PNW) moniker from a 1951 Black Ball car ferry promoting the region as the “Sunshine Coast,” thanks to a 1914 Roberts Creek freight house titled “The Sunshine Belt.” We flew over the town of Sechelt— named after the First Nations tribe that has lived in the region for centuries—and then turned northwest, finally gliding to a stop in glassy Pender Harbour. Our plane docked at Painted Boat Resort Spa & Marina, our home base for the next couple of days.

Artists and musicians (like Joni Mitchell) have flocked to the Sunshine Coast over the years, inspired by the quiet and the scenery. The resort overlooks the marina from a steep hillside housing 31 spacious villas. A variety of floor plans makes them ideal for families or groups of friends. The westfacing balconies and patios are perfect for watching sunsets paint brilliant strokes of color on the harbor. Located behind the villas, the Spa at Painted Boat offers a full range of luxurious treatments. I opted for a Green Tea and Seaweed Salt Glow Body Exfoliation that included a fabulous massage and moisture treatment. Guests booking treatments also have access to the Spa Garden, featuring pools of various temperatures from hot to cold. À la carte access to the Spa Garden is available for $40. For dinner, we relaxed with a glass of wine and a delicious meal on-site at the Lagoon Restaurant.

Artists and musicians (like Joni Mitchell) have flocked to the Sunshine Coast over the years, inspired by the quiet and the scenery. With more artists per capita than anywhere else in Canada, the Sunshine Coast offers the self-directed Purple Banner Tour—if you see a purple flag from the road, it means an artist has their studio open to the public. The official Sunshine Coast Arts Crawl, scheduled October 18 to 20, 2019, includes more than 400 artists at 165 venues from Langdale to Earls Cove. The Sunshine Coast stretches 110 miles along the Salish Sea between Howe Sound to the south and the entrance of Desolation Sound to the north. In between are forested parks and hiking trails, lakes and even mountain bikes trails at Coast Gravity Park. We gave a whole morning over to nature with a forest-bathing session at Cliff Gilker Park, led by forest therapy guide Haida Bolton, touching trees, feeling the textures of the forest, silently watching swaying branches and plants quivering in the breeze. I particularly enjoyed the sound of the creek as it swirled and plummeted over a falls, with dappled sunlight dancing on the frothy water.

GIBSONS PUBLIC MARKET

There are many water-based activities up and down the coast. We opted for a Sunshine Coast Boat Tour from Egmont to Princess Louisa Inlet, stopping at Chatterbox Falls for lunch. The trip takes most of the day, but the sights are well worth the time. During our trip, we saw eagles, seals and even orcas. Our guide pointed out various geological points of interest as well as ancient pictographs painted on precarious outcroppings by some brave First Nations soul. As we entered the Princess Louisa Inlet two hours after leaving Egmont, something caught me by surprise—there before us was Malibu, a Young Life camp I attended as a 15-year-old high school student! Memories of waterskiing, evening skits and cute lifeguards bubbled up to the surface for the next few minutes until we reached our destination. Granite cliffs twice the height of Half Dome in Yosemite soar skyward, making for an incredible backdrop to the beautiful waterfall. Though the Sunshine Coast is somewhat remote, there is still a thriving gastronomy scene complete with an Ale Trail (featuring popular Persephone Brewing Company), restaurants and markets. The Gibsons Public Market offers artisan food products, live music and even cooking classes. In addition to the Gibsons, farmers’ markets dot the “island,” including two in Roberts Creek on Wednesdays. The Sechelt Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market on Saturdays includes everything from fresh produce and seafood to First Nations art, jewelry, clothing, pottery and even hand-crafted toys.

photos by chris thorn

The West Coast Wilderness Lodge, located on the north end of the “island” near Egmont, offers unsurpassed views of Sechelt Inlet from its balconies and restaurant, making it popular as a wedding venue. Those looking for a more rustic setting in which to tie the knot may find Ruby Lake Resort checks that box. A natural wildlife-andbird sanctuary, the 80-acre reserve features an outdoor amphitheater and lakeside yoga platform as well as La Trattoria Italiana for on-site dining.

Not for the fainthearted, wild bull and buffalo mustering is a true “only in Australia” experience. Guests follow a team of Australian cowboys (ringers) as they muster wild bulls on a large, widely inaccessible farming property in outback Northern Territory. In order to muster these animals, a helicopter is used to search the most remote sections of the property, and once located, the real fun begins. Watch as a ringer navigates the rugged terrain at high speeds to round up these wild beasts. This action-packed, high-octane experience is wildly unique and 100 percent authentic. We have had a number of clients opt to experience this event, and every one of them has commented on how they would remember this moment for the rest of their lives.

THE TAILOR’S INSIDER TIPS FOR ENJOYING AUSTRALIA LOOK FOR AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCES. Get off the beaten track and engage with the people who live and breathe this land. Best seen through a local’s eyes, Australia is full of exceptional residents who love sharing their passion with visitors from around the world. Uncover the remote landscapes of Arnhem Land, in the Northern Territory’s far reaches, for a unique and authentic connection with the indigenous peoples of Australia or look for our weird and wonderful collection of wildlife, hidden in bushland, and best discovered with our incredible collection of world-class guides. KNOW THE SEASONS. Australia is a large country with diverse landscapes, and as such, you can experience several different seasons around the country throughout the year. Winter in the southern and eastern states (June to August) has cooler temperatures and is great for seeing the wild animals. During these same months, Queensland and the Northern Territory receive glorious weather, with warm days and mild evenings—this is the best time to visit. Compare this to the summer months (December to January), when the southern and eastern states receive hot, dry days that are perfect for enjoying our amazing beaches and exploring the various regions. Monsoonal, humid weather in Queensland and the Northern Territory we recommend avoiding. DON’T TRY TO DO IT ALL AT ONCE. As previously mentioned, Australia is a large and diverse country, which can make trying to see everything in one trip virtually impossible. Which is why we recommend that clients pick their favorite destination first and build their itinerary around that, then come back for second and third trips to enjoy the rest of this magnificent country.
