Creating a Family Issue is a challenge because every family is different, each with its own areas of interest, likes and dislikes, and needs. The only solution is to cover as many topics as possible. So, from kid-friendly rock concerts to family-style camping trips, I hope everyone can find something to spark a desire to spend more time together. For the families that are musically inclined, check out the feature on page 34. It highlights the Not-Its!, a local rock band that successfully figured out a way to combine rock music with kids’ concerts. They are quirky, eccentric and so much fun! If your family is active in the outdoors, I suggest turning to page 46 for tips and tricks on taking your kids into the wild for their first overnight trip. Or, try page 24 for details about the celebratory events surrounding the 50th anniversary of the North Cascades National Park Service Complex. It’s one of the best family-friendly events of the summer. If it’s some inspiration you’re seeking, read the story about Anu and Naveen Jain, a husband-and-wife team that encourages their whole family to make the world a better place through technophilanthropy. They are featured on page 40. Whatever you find yourself doing with the family, we hope you make the Club a part of it and have fun!

Undermanned through most of the first half, Team Ashe lacked the firepower to contend with Team Cary in the championship. Despite all four of their players scoring in double digits, they simply had no answer for the ball movement of Team Cary. When Team Ashe found ways to give them fits, Jed Collins imposed his will and kept the wheel turning for Team Cary. With 55 points all coming from sheer physical will, Jed dominated the game from down low, forcing two of Team Ashe’s players to nearly foul out trying to contain him. In the end, the physicality and championship game experience were too much for Team Ashe. Team Cary takes home their second consecutive men’s league title, 103–88.

Eastside news from our partners at 425 Business magazine. BOEING’S PROPOSED HYPERSONIC AIRCRAFT
In late June, Boeing debuted the concept for their first passengercarrying hypersonic plane at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics conference in Atlanta. The vehicle would travel five times the speed of sound — Mach 5, or 3,800 miles per hour. This means that the proposed plane could take passengers anywhere in the world in three hours or less. The idea is still in the early stages of development, and Boeing has many technical challenges to work out before a prototype can be made. The concept of making hypersonic vehicles, however, is nothing new for Boeing, which has been testing ultrafast technology for decades.
CONSTRUCTION UPDATE: EAST LINK TUNNEL ALMOST COMPLETE
The East Link light rail tunnel excavation is nearly complete, Sound Transit announced in July. Crews are expected to begin construction on the Bellevue Downtown Station later this month. “We are on the verge of a breakthrough in many senses of the word,” Sound Transit Boardmember Claudia Balducci said in a statement. “As the tunnel nears completion, we are moving ever closer to seeing light rail fully constructed, connecting the Eastside to the rest of the region and giving our residents and visitors a fast, reliable, traffic-free way to get around.” Tunnel work began in February 2017 and is on pace to be finished in just 15 months, five months ahead of schedule.

ANNIVERSARY OF NORTH CASCADES
OUTDOORS FEATURE
Get outside this summer and enjoy some of the Pacific Northwest’s classic scenery. The festivities will feature art, music, family-friendly events and activities.
written
by
errin williams
Pack up your family and enjoy nature while celebrating the 50th anniversary of the North Cascades National Park Service Complex this August. Katy Hooper, a park ranger at the North Cascades, invites everyone to come bask in one of the most magnificent landscapes in the area. “The North Cascades are essential to the well-being of the environment, considering the area has no roads and few developments,” Hooper says. “Natural areas, such as the North Cascades, exemplify the culture of the Pacific Northwest.” BOOKS
The North Cascades offer dynamic wilderness landscapes, glaciated peaks, countless cascading streams, unique natural beauty and important human histories. Lauren Danner, author of Crown Jewel Wilderness: Creating North Cascades National Park, will present many of the stories behind the North Cascades and how the range became the spectacular sight that it is now. Exploring and discovering new lands is what visiting the North Cascades is all about, whether you hike through the mountains or drive to the scenic overlooks, the North Cascades can be enjoyed by all, Hooper says.
bellevue club august 2018 | 25
“EXPLORING AND DISCOVERING NEW LANDS IS WHAT VISITING THE NORTH CASCADES IS ALL ABOUT.”
MUSIC
Enjoy the newly composed works of Music in the American Wild as it echoes through the Cascades. Music in the American Wild is a group of classical musicians who continue to celebrate the people, places and ideas that have helped shape American history and culture. Music in the American Wild will perform and conduct family-friendly activities on Tuesday, August 21, through Saturday, August 25. Evening performances will be held at the Newhalem Creek Campground Amphitheater. ART
A variety of art inspired by the North Cascades will be on display all summer long in the North Cascades Visitor Center in Newhalem and the Gloden West Visitor Center in Stehekin. There are two main exhibits and a kids’ exhibit that features a mural of the North Cascades on display at the Wilderness Information Center in Marblemount. Art by John Suiter, author of Poets on the Peaks: Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen & Jack Kerouac in the North Cascades, will also be displayed. Depictions of the North Cascades encourage visitors to preserve these amazing landscapes so they can be enjoyed by younger generations. On a busy summer weekend, the North Cascades has anywhere between 800 to 1,500 visitors, and Hooper expects even more for the anniversary, so feel free to bring a lunch and camp out. There are also restaurants and a market in Newhalem, the gateway community leading up to the North Cascades. Worried about the drive? The staff at the North Cascades is working toward providing transportation from Concrete, Washington. As you celebrate, be sure to use the hashtags #lovemycascades and #NOCA50 along with sharing why you love the North Cascades on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

THE RAINBOW FOOD-BASED C R A F TS F OR KI DS!
Prepare to get your hands a little messy as you try these healthy, family-friendly recipes designed to help your kids enjoy eating foods from the different colors of the rainbow.
#1 SMOOTHIE POPSICLES
We took the most popular smoothie recipes from Bellevue Club’s Luna Express and turned them into tasty frozen treats for your tots! Preparation: Pick a smoothie and mix ingredients in a blender until smooth. Remember liquids expand when frozen, so be sure to fill the mold only three-quarters of the way. Pour the smoothies into the mold of your choice, whether it’s a cup, ice cube tray or popsicle mold. To ensure the sticks are straight, freeze the popsicles for about 30 minutes before adding the sticks. Push the sticks in about an inch away from the bottom of the mold. Place the popsicles back in the freezer until they are solid. Enjoy!

#2 WATERMELON PIZZA
Use all the fresh berries we have on hand in Washington to make a fun, fruity dessert. Ingredients: 1 whole watermelon 3 cups Greek yogurt 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 tablespoon honey Strawberries or raspberries 1 cup blueberries Coconut shavings Chopped mint leaves Chocolate sauce Preparation: Cut the watermelon in half. Measure and cut half-inch slices. This will be the base for your pizza. In a mixing bowl, combine the yogurt, vanilla extract and honey. Spread the yogurt mixture onto the slice of watermelon until it is mostly covered, like tomato sauce on pizza dough. Slice the strawberries or raspberries and place them on top of the yogurt, then add the blueberries. Sprinkle on the coconut shavings and mint and drizzle with chocolate. Carefully cut the fruit pizza into slices and enjoy!
#3 DIY FOOD GROUPS COLLAGE
Knowing about the food groups at a young age helps children understand what they are putting into their bodies. Mixing crafts with health tips is a fun way to familiarize children with the five main food groups.

THE NOT-ITS! YOUR NEXT “KINDIE” ROCK OBSESSION IN
a world of digital music where kids have their own iPods and parents see children’s products becoming more about trend and less about tradition, the Not-Its! are closing the gap between cute kiddie music and modern hits. The Seattle-based group is made up of five musicians who missed their rock-n-roll lives once they had kids. “We all knew each other from the days of playing indie rock and all started having babies,” says Danny Adamson, guitarist for the group. “We missed playing music and felt there was a void of ‘rockin’ music for kids.”
Ten years later, the band is still thriving and each member’s family inspires the music they create. With 10 kids between the five of them, they have a testing ground for each new song. In 2017 the music industry’s revenue was about 68 percent of what it was in 1999, before the digital music boom. Now, digital revenue accounts for more than half of the recorded music market. Physical sales revenue (CDs, records, etc.) continues to decline by about five percent each year, correlating with the 20year decline in overall revenue for the industry. bellevue club august 2018 | 35
“LET’S BE HONEST, KIDS’ MUSIC IS OVERALL SOFT. WE AIM TO BE YOUR KID’S FIRST ROCK SHOW EXPERIENCE,” DANNY SAYS. “ALL-ORIGINAL, FUN, LOUD, ACTION-PACKED SONGS THAT KIDS WILL LOVE.”
36 | august 2018 reflections
Children’s music is the only genre that isn’t seeing as big of a hit from the digital boom. Overall, children’s music trends show an increase in sales by up to 38 percent year by year. The demand for “Kindie Rock” CDs is unlike any other genre. “In the digital world, where everyone seems to get their music for free, kids’ music seems to be the one remaining genre where people will still buy CDs. We find that kids like to have the physical product in their hand,” Adamson says. “Our visual aesthetic is pretty strong, so kids tend to like the artwork and look of our albums.”
BENEFITS OF MUSIC IN CHILD DEVELOPMENT
As far as the Not-Its! are concerned, children and families are the best audience they’ve ever had. After starting their careers in dark clubs where everyone stood around with their arms crossed until 2 a.m., the band feeds off family energy that’s eager to have fun and participate. Don’t expect too-cute, tear-your-hair-out children’s music at your next Not-Its! concert. The quintet gives a highenergy rock show experience every time, jumping up and down and tiring out the kids along with them.
photos provided by the not-its!
In 2016, a study by the University of Southern California’s Brain and Creativity Institute found that sharing musical experiences with children can accelerate brain development in the areas of language acquisition and reading skills. However, academic achievement isn’t the only benefit of sharing music with your kids. Listening to music has proved to stimulate all areas of child development and skills for educational readiness including intellectual, social, emotional, motor, language and overall literacy. Music is also proven to help the body and mind work together, and dancing helps build motor skills. For children and adults, music helps strengthen memory skills.

NAVEEN JAIN
40 | august 2018 reflections
The story of how one husband-and-wife team does good all over the world
Anu and Naveen Jain share an interest in technology and a desire to better the world with it. Although they collaborate on most projects (and there have been many), they each have their favorites. Anu recently spearheaded a milliondollar challenge to develop a device to keep women safe from harassment and assault, while Naveen has been more focused on gut flora and space travel. Reflections sat down with these technophilanthropists to find out more.
NAVEEN’S STORY
Naveen Jain doesn’t think the current health-care system is broken, but he does think it’s stuck in the past. “Our existing health-care system was designed long ago for acute care and for treating infectious diseases, and, in fact, it does that extremely well,” he says. “But now, most of us are suffering from chronic diseases, and the system that was designed to deal with episodic sickness is now dealing with chronic sickness. “Furthermore, some of the cures for infectious diseases, like antibiotics, are largely responsible for creating chronic diseases. So now we live in a world where the more money we are spending, the sicker we are getting.” Naveen, a serial entrepreneur and founder of companies such as InfoSpace and Intelius, discovered what he sees as a piece of the solution by listening to his gut—literally.
the future, including epidemic-scale types of pathological illnesses. “If something bad were to happen and large groups of people got sick, how would we know what’s making people sick?” he explains. “So we came up with very detailed tests to find out exactly what’s going on inside the human body. Then I realized, if we know what makes people sick, how can we use that information to keep people healthy?” For Naveen, the best answer is for people to start testing their gut microbiomes, which is the collection of organisms that reside inside the intestines. Naveen isn’t the first to believe that the delicate balance of good and bad bacteria, viruses, yeasts, fungi, parasites and so on, is one of the best indicators of health we have. It’s quickly become a hot topic in the last decade.
A few years ago he was visiting the Los Alamos National Laboratory, which specializes in biodefense research. During that time, he was considering all the ways humans could get sick in

& hers
“We know the gut microbiome communicates with the rest of the body and influences how genes are expressed, and we are now discovering that diseases like Parkinson’s start in the gut 15 years before the disease presents itself. Depression, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, many autoimmune diseases,” he says. “They all come from an imbalance of gut microbiome.”
Want more information? Purchase a Viome kit from the Bellevue Club or attend the Microbiome Seminar on September 24. Contact wellness@thebellevueclub. com or call 425-688-3172 to register.
Naveen says his company Viome and their Metatranscriptome sequencing technology have created the most scientifically sound test for understanding the gut microbiome, adding that the level of detail and information they test for is unparalleled. And a lot of the credit goes to their use of artificial intelligence.
“The amount of information we’re dealing with, because it’s at such a deep level of science, cannot be processed by any human being, so we rely on robotics to process the samples and AI to make recommendations,” he says.
Aside from AI use in the testing, the Viome kit, which people take home to collect a sample to then send to the lab in the mail, is paired with an app. A major function of the app is a personal guide named Vie that walks participants through the entire process and continues to gather information for months following the initial results. “AI can learn from itself, and it’s constantly tracking, so it’s constantly learning,” Naveen says. “But it’s doing so using the results of tens of thousands of people. If a doctor becomes better at his job when he sees hundreds of patients, imagine what this can do.” Another major purpose for relying heavily on AI is its ability to scale. Naveen eventually wants to make this technology so cheap and effective that everyone around the world has access to it. He also hopes to add other types of tests to their artillery. But when asked about the future of Viome, Naveen’s answer was a bit surprising, although very optimistic. “This is going to sound odd, but I hope the company doesn’t even exist in 10 years because we have solved the problem and made the technology so cheap that no one is suffering from chronic disease,” he says. It may not surprise you to know that Naveen hopes chronic disease is eradicated so that people can live healthier, happier lives and so generations after him can keep pushing the boundaries of human life in all kinds of exciting ways. After all, Naveen’s other company is called Moon Express, which he says will be sending people to the moon as early as next year. For more information, please visit viome.com. 42 | august 2018 reflections
ANU’S STORY
Anu and Naveen Jain have three children, two boys and a girl. “My daughter is strong and intelligent, but every time it comes to safety I find myself telling her, ‘You need to be careful. You can’t be out so late alone; it’s not safe to walk by yourself,’” she says. “It infuriates me because I never have to tell these things to my sons.” Anu also has her own experiences with feeling unsafe. Her father was a United Nations diplomat, and she grew up in Israel. The family traveled frequently to countries all over the world. “Safety was always something I had to be aware of as a woman. It didn’t matter which country I was in. I have all these memories of how unsafe it was. Harassment has always been a problem, and it’s a global problem.” Frustrated that nothing has changed since she was a young woman, in the fall of 2016 Anu, in partnership with her husband, Naveen, and daughter, Priyanka, launched a worldwide challenge to find a technology-based solution. “I thought, Why haven’t we used technology for an immediate solution for women’s safety?” Anu says. “We looked around for funding, and both of us are on the board of XPRIZE—which is a nonprofit all about finding solutions for huge problems and making them scalable through innovation and technology.” Through XPRIZE, the winner of the contest would be awarded $1 million to develop a solution.

“Technophilanthropy, I love that word. Technology is exciting, and it can help solve some really tough global problems.”
The criteria for the competition was to create an inconspicuous wearable device that a woman could trigger to send an emergency signal to a list of contacts inputted by the user. This list could contain family members, local authorities, first responders, friends, et cetera. The device also had to cost less than $40 and not rely on cellular service, so it could function in remote villages. Eighty-five teams from 18 countries entered the contest, and 20 teams made it to the semifinals, where a panel of international and interdisciplinary experts reviewed the ideas and narrowed down the field to the top five finalists. Last month, a grand award ceremony was held at the United Nations in New York, with press and the top five teams present. The winning team was announced and awarded a million dollar check. The grand prize went to Leaf Wearables, a team from New Delhi. “That team created a chip that can be worn in a pendant, or you can create your own jewelry with it. The thing that stood out about their device is that once it sends the alert, it automatically starts voice recording. In many countries, there’s so much corruption. Many cases become ‘He said; she said.’ Eventually they want to have video capabilities too,” Anu says. “We are so proud that one of the top five teams was from the University of Washington. Their solution could send an emergency alert through a breathing pattern and was under $10, overcoming a major financial hurdle for some women in more impoverished areas.” Anu says she was blown away with the level of innovation from all the teams. “Two people in the audience were so inspired that they gave an additional $50,000 to one of the teams,” Anu says. “Technophilanthropy, I love

that word. Technology is exciting, and it can help solve some really tough global problems.” Anu continues to mentor all the teams as they proceed with developing their products, and she is excited to see their prototypes go to market, changing the trajectory of women’s safety and humanity. She also gives the following advice for anyone striving to create change. “It’s really all about hard work, passion and not being afraid to fail,” she says. “It’s not just about having an idea. It’s about perseverance and doing what it takes to get it done.”

FA M I LY F E AT U R E You never know what will resonate with kids. A chance encounter with a certain food group can lead to a lifetime of love or absolute disdain. It’s a hot-and-cold relationship with the under-16 crowd that can make introducing them to new things daunting. If you love nature and want to share that with your kids, a great way to get them involved is to go on an overnight camping trip. After all, it could take only one chance encounter with a deer or waterfall to persuade them that camping is cool. Reflections checked in with the folks at REI to provide some tips and tricks to ensure a good experience for the entire family.
bellevue club august 2018 | 47
P R E PA R I N G F O R A T R I P PRACTICE CAMPING AT HOME
Are your kids new to the outdoors? Pitch a tent in the backyard and let them sleep in it so they become comfortable with a new environment overnight. To take it the extra mile, wake up in the morning and skip the usual routine. Instead, head to a nearby park for a walk. LET THEM PACK
Give your kids the responsibility to pack their own gear (using a list you’ve created). Giving everyone a packing list can help kids feel involved and important. Always double-check, of course, but having your children take part in preparation and organization helps to get them ready for future trips. It will also allow them to decide which of their favorite toys they want to bring. CHECK FIRE RESTRICTIONS
KINDER CONES
48 | august 2018 reflections
Guaranteed, your children will see any fireless campground as incomplete. Before you leave, make some calls to make sure campfires are permitted at your destination. There’s no bigger disappointment than when a kid who was expecting s’mores finds out that a burn ban is in effect.
AT THE CAMPGROUND STAY ORGANIZED
Establish fixed locations for important items such as forks, spoons, flashlights, et cetera, and remind everyone to return items to where they belong. GIVE EVERYONE A JOB
Kids like to be involved. Assign them camp chores like gathering firewood or water, and recognize their contributions with praise. KEEP THEM ORIENTED
Help your children memorize the number of campsites it takes to get to the stream or parking lot. Pointing out landmarks and which direction is north will help them find the campground if they wander and will encourage them to have awareness of their surroundings.
bellevue club august 2018 | 49
KEEP IT FUN
Don’t make their first trip a re-creation of Survivor. Bring toys and activities to keep them busy and loving their campsite. A few of REI’s suggestions (listed on their website) include: PADDLEBALL SET
Paddleball, Spikeball or pretty much any competitive game can get the whole family involved and having a blast. MARSHMALLOW LAUNCHER
Traditionally you toast them. Now you can shoot them at one another too. Imagine: the common marshmallow, transformed into a summertime snowball. KITES, DISCS AND FLYING TOYS
If it flies, it’s a heap of fun. WATER FUN
Camping in warm weather? If you can tolerate a little flying water, water toys offer a great way to cool off.

Reflections magazine: How and when did you become a personal chef ? Bonnie McPike: I’ve been cooking professionally for a decade now. I started in a pizza kitchen in New York. Then I worked my way up through various restaurants. I was working at the Michelin-starred wd-50 when I got an email from someone looking for a private chef for the summer. I tried it and loved it. RM: When did you bring your skills to Seattle? BM: I moved to Seattle two years ago and started cooking for CEOs, busy professionals and families. Also a lot of athletes—a few of the Mariners, a former Seahawk player, the Minnesota Twins when they came to town. That’s really my niche now because I’m personally very active and share the same mentality as my clients—food is a pleasure, but it’s also an important fuel source.
54 | august 2018 reflections
RM: What’s your activity of choice? BM: I’m primarily a runner. I’ve done quite a few half marathons and a half Ironman, and I’m currently training for the Seattle Marathon. I stopped doing triathlons because it’s easier timewise to just run. I’m all about keeping things simple, and as long as you have a pair of shoes and shorts, you can go for a run. RM: Can you give me the basics about your service Marathon Meals? BM: Marathon Meals is a 12-week meal service specifically for runners. The first 11 weeks are pre-race fuel leading up to race day. The final week is post-race recovery.
bellevue club august 2018 | 55
RM: And does it correspond with specific events? BM: Right now the service is offered twice a year—once prior to the Seattle Marathon (November 23) and once leading up to the Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon (June 8–9, 2019). RM: What’s included in the service? BM: The service is Monday through Friday, lunches and two healthy snacks to supplement runners’ already-existing nutrition program. I created Marathon Meals because I find I’m busiest during the day and don’t want to worry about healthy eating. The program saves runners time, energy and reduces stress levels knowing they have nutritious food each day. 56 | august 2018 reflections
RM: How are these meals crafted with runners in mind? BM: I’m consulting with local dietitians to formulate the recipes with optimal proportions of lean proteins, clean carbs and healthy fats. The portions also increase as the program goes along because runners are clocking more miles and need more calories to support their training.

RM: What are the biggest nutrition mistakes people make when training? BM: Many people don’t fuel at the right time, or skip meals altogether, which is harmful when clocking high mileage. I’m personally guilty of those mistakes and of sometimes eating whatever is convenient. I believe it’s critical when training for a race to maintain good nutrition throughout the working week and Marathon Meals allows for that. The program costs $50 a day and includes deliveries twice a week to your home or office. For more information, visit chefbonnierae.com/marathonmeals.

Within the larger Carmel area, Carmel-by-the-Sea is a one-square-mile incorporated town with a distinctively European feel. There are no street addresses (everyone still uses the post office), neon signs and food franchises aren’t allowed, and the facades all purposefully retain a country cottage feel. There is no better place to bask in the charm than a stay at the Hofsas House Hotel. The property has been around for more than 70 years and owned by generations of the same family, most recently managed by Carrie Theis. “Carmel-by-the-Sea has a magical feel to it because it’s so fresh, neat and tidy and charming,” she says. Theis extends the allure to the hotel by decorating each room with antique furniture, giving it true Bavarian flare. Replete with cheese shops, wine bars and world-class restaurants, Theis says dining out is a staple activity in Carmel-by-the-Sea. However, in good European fashion, she also highly recommends heading to 5th Avenue Deli & Catering Co. where all your girlfriends can pick out their favorite foods and walk a few blocks to the beach for a picnic. Take in the sights of surfers and seals as you enjoy a quiet evening with your favorite traveling companions. For more information, visit hofsashouse.com and 5thavedeli.com.

BIG SUR LUXURY
Technically the Hyatt Carmel Highlands is in Carmel, but the views from the hotel encapsulate the beauty of the Big Sur coastline. “We are located right at the gateway to Big Sur,” says Banquet Manager Sheena Staveley. Recently renovated, the rooms of this 100-year-old property are appointed with luxury soaking tubs, small kitchens and spacious balconies that overlook the dramatic ocean views. The location also features heated pools, multiple hot tubs, fitness facilities and a private wine room available for rent. Among the four on-site dining options, Pacific’s Edge is the most notable in-house restaurant and offers fine dining atop a cliffside. But also be sure to try the outdoor dining deck, which opened last year and serves breakfast, lunch and cocktail hour options. If you’re looking for a decadent meal off the property, head to the area’s timeless steakhouse The Whaling Station. With beef sourced from the mid-west, the restaurant has a reputation for perfectly executing classic steak dinners. Roberto Coin narrates his vision of modern women-strong and passionate, with unique and essential points of view. The opposing silhouettes of the jewels are the connecting link that anchors them to the same inspirational concept: two elements, two distinct parts that face one another united by an invisible bond. Sculptural and sleek, the architectural profile of these pieces evokes the endless style, and creative edge the designer is known for. Available in 18K rose and white gold with accents of diamonds, black jade, malachite and turquoise, Sauvage Privé is a collection that makes a statement. We invite you to visit soon! —Steven Goldfarb
