SNOQUALMIE TRIBE PURCHASES SALISH LODGE & SPA The Snoqualmie Indian Tribe’s decades-long aim to purchase the Salish Lodge & Spa and surrounding land came to fruition on Oct. 31 when the tribe purchased the property from the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe for $125 million. The deal includes the lodge and 45 acres surrounding Snoqualmie Falls, which halts the Muckleshoot’s development plans for a hotel, convention center, and housing.

VISIT BELLEVUE ANNOUNCES NEW BRAND IDENTITY Visit Bellevue has launched a new brand identity and strategy to help better tell its story to visitors with an eye toward boosting the city’s visitor economy to a $2 billion industry by the end of 2020, the destination marketing and management organization announced. Bellevue’s visitor economy is on pace to be about $1.8 billion this year, said Brad Jones, executive director of the organization.

report: washington’s economy takes hit due to lack of child care Employee turnover and absenteeism caused by Washington’s lack of child care resulted in a $2 billion hit to employers, and an overall hit to the state’s gross domestic product of $6.5 billion last year, according to a new report from the Washington State Child Care Collaborative Task Force. The Washington State Child Care Collaborative Task Force was created in 2018 by the state legislature to identify new ways to expand access to high-quality, affordable child care. Multiple partners, including the Washington State Department of Commerce, the Association of Washington Business, and Child Care Aware of Washington contributed to the report.

NUTRITION

THE STORY BEHIND CINNAMON

cin na mon be au t y h ack s LIP PLUMPER

A pinch of cinnamon and a little Vaseline can be an effective lip scrub. You may feel a slightly tingly sensation, but after you let the mixture sit for a minute, wipe it off and apply another coat of Vaseline; you’ll notice fuller lips instantly.

BEYOND GROUND CINNAMON

Cinnamon is a spice made from the bark of the genus Cinnamomum; it has a long history dating back to ancient Egypt. There are two types of cinnamon: Ceylon (aka “true” cinnamon) and cassia (the more common variety today). Cinnamon, as we know it, is made from shaving the inner bark of Cinnamomum trees and letting the shavings dry out, which is why they often are curled. Then, those cinnamon sticks (also known as quills) of inner bark are ground into cinnamon powder.

ACNE FACE MASK

THE BENEFITS AN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Studies have shown that the cinnamon smell and essential oil can be used as an effective, healthy and environmentally friendly pesticide; it has been proven to kill mosquito larvae. It also works as a repellant for adult mosquitos. However, you should dilute the substance before putting it directly on your body because it is a common skin irritant.

• Rich in iron and magnesium Rich in fiber Contains large amounts of highly potent polyphenol antioxidants Rich in anti-inflammatory properties

Three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon mixed together and smoothed evenly over your face is an effective anti-acne treatment. Cinnamon has been proved to stop acnecausing bacteria, and the honey will reduce redness and provide moisture.

Lowers cholesterol and improves blood pressure

HAIR GROWTH TREATMENT

Improves sensitivity to the hormone insulin

A weekly cinnamon hair mask can stimulate hair growth. Combine cinnamon with honey or olive oil and watch your hair thicken over time.

Lowers blood sugar levels Improves dementia Fights bacterial and fungal infections

MAKE IT TONIGHT: PEANUT BANANA CINNAMON SMOOTHIE

• 1 cup vanilla soy milk (or skim milk) • 1 large banana (peeled and cut into chunks, or use a previously frozen banana) • 2 tbsp. peanut butter • ½ tsp. cinnamon (plus more for sprinkling) • Optional: 1 tsp. honey (or turbinado sugar) • 3 ice cubes written

READING CORNER WHERE’D YOU GO, BERNADETTE

by Maria Semple When family life gets to be too much for Bernadette, she disappears, leaving an elaborate web of emails, invoices and school memos for her family to sift through to discover the secret past she’s been hiding for decades. This entertaining novel about a family coming to terms with who they are is a powerful reminder of mother-daughter love.

BOOKS BASED IN SEATTLE

THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN

We live in an interesting place; with mountains on multiple sides, beautiful waters and dark rainy seasons, it’s no wonder artists find this area inspirational. Sure, Twilight put Forks on the map, but there is no shortage of authors whose work took inspiration right here in the greater Seattle area. With steampunk tales to lifelike narratives, you can put yourself in the authors’ shoes and see your backyard through their eyes.

BONESHAKER

by Cherie Priest In the early days of the civil war, rumors of gold brought people to the Pacific Northwest. Russian prospectors, who were anxious to compete for it, commissioned an inventor to create a machine that could mine through Alaska’s ice. But the first time it was tried, it wreaked havoc on all of Seattle, creating a population of living dead. This sci-fi tale takes place 16 years after this “event,” after a wall was built to keep that toxic city separate from the rest of humanity. See what happens when one boy ventures into this land of undead Seattle with air pirates, criminal overlords and heavily armed refugees.

TRUTH LIKE THE SUN by Jim Lynch

Follow powerhouse Roger Morgan, who was the mastermind behind the World’s Fair in Seattle in 1962, which put the city on the map. Now, 40 years later, at the age of 70, he’s running for mayor and aiming to do it again. Meanwhile, a reporter who is eager to get her big break is assigned to investigate Morgan and where his power really comes from (starting with that 1962 World’s Fair), hoping to expose him during his run for mayor. Turns out, Morgan was superior in smooth talking his way in and out of situations and backroom deals. Follow this game of cat and mouse to the end and discover the fictional history behind one of Seattle’s most powerful influencers.

by Garth Stein This is a 2008 novel told from a dog’s point of view. The book follows Denny Swift, a race-car driver and customer representative at a Seattle BMW, through the eyes of his dog, Enzo, who believes that he is predestined to be reincarnated as a human in his next life. The Seattle Times calls this novel a journey through the dog’s “struggle to hone his humanness, to make sense of the good and bad and unthinkable.” Read along as Enzo lies around the house, watches television and eventually becomes a staple in Denny’s life, playing a key role in his child custody battle. FIREFLY LANE

by Kristin Hannah Based in 1974, Kate is at the bottom of her middle-school food chain while a seemingly perfect newcomer, Tully, arrives who has it all—brains, glamour and mystery. The two quickly make a pact to be best friends forever and so begins a story of friendship that spans three generations. For 30 years the two are inseparable, until a single act tears them apart. Read along as their friendship is put to the ultimate test.

ADVANCED TRX TRAINING

photography

by

taryn emerick

Bellevue Club personal trainer Kristin Watterson spends a lot of time hiking and playing in the mountains. She asks a lot of her body, so she complements her outdoor activities with stability and strength training using her favorite piece of equipment—the TRX suspension training system. She shared her favorite advanced circuit and recommends performing the series of movements three times.

TRX-BOSU PUSH-UP Place the BOSU ball, rounded side down, about four feet in front of the TRX. With the TRX handles roughly six inches to a foot off the ground, place the tops of your feet in the straps. Engaging through the entire core and back, place your hands in a push-up position on the BOSU. Lower the body into a low push-up position and return to center. Perform eight to 12 reps.

02

/05

TRX PULL-UP Adjust the TRX straps to a middle height, about two feet off the ground. Balance on the heels (or feet with the knees bent at 90 degrees for an easier modification). Pull your body toward the TRX handles, then lower to the start position. Perform eight to 12 reps.

bellevue club december 2019 | 29

TRX-BOSU SINGLE-LEG LUNGE Place the BOSU flat side down about a foot behind the TRX and adjust the straps so they are at hip height. Stand on the rounded side and hold the TRX handles in front of you. Balance on the right leg and squat, reaching the left leg behind you, but not touching the ground. Return to standing with the left knee driving through to a 90-degree position in front of you. Perform eight to 12 reps on the right leg, then switch to the other side.

TRX TALK Why do you like the TRX system? I haven’t found anything better to work my entire body, including my core, and I get results in a short amount of time. But the thing I love most is I can take it anywhere. After a run through Lincoln Park, I hook my TRX to a tree and do a full-body workout. My TRX is my nature therapy. What are the benefits of the TRX and BOSU combo? The TRX uses your body weight and gravity as resistance to build strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, core and joint stability. Plus, you can adjust your weight on the fly, minimizing your training time by switching from one exercise to the next in seconds. While standing on the BOSU, you’re constantly engaging the small stabilizer (intrinsic) muscles in the lower body to keep you in place. All your muscles are forced to contract to keep your joints in proper position and to help improve balance.

04

/05

TRX-BOSU CENTER PLANK Adjust the TRX so the handles are roughly six inches to a foot off the ground. Place the BOSU flat side down two to three feet in front of the TRX. Place your feet in the handles. Place your forearms on the BOSU in a plank position and hold for three sets of 30 seconds.

TRX PIKE TO EXTERNAL ROTATION Adjust the TRX so the handles are roughly six inches to a foot off the ground. Place your feet in the handles and walk the hands out into a push position. Drive through the hips and lift them up toward the ceiling, stacking them over the shoulders. Return to a push-up position. Then drive the knees to the right shoulder and back to center. Crunch the legs to the left shoulder and return to center. Perform eight to 12 reps in all three positions.

The fireplace is back in use. Gloves, sweaters and coats hang in closets. Timeless recipes reemerge from where they’ve been stowed. While many of us have our favorite seasonal recipes, winter can be the perfect time to hone your baking skills and try something new. Here are three easy treats to add to your collection that’ll make your house smell better than a Yankee candle and warm your loved ones from the inside out.

Ingredients: 4 Bosc pears ¾ cup honey 3 cups water 1 cinnamon stick ½ tbsp. cardamom seeds 1 tsp. five-spice powder ½ cup dried unsweetened cranberries Peel of one lemon Instructions: Place everything except the pears into a medium saucepan and set burner on high. Peel the pears and slice off a small cross section from the bottom of each to create a flat surface, allowing the pears to stand up. When the mixture begins to boil, add the pears to the pan and reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer the pears, rotating occasionally, for 10 to 12 minutes, or until a fork easily pierces the middle of each one. Note: This may take different amounts of time for each pear, depending on ripeness. When ready, remove the pears from the mixture and set aside. Continue to simmer the mixture on low for another 40 minutes to an hour until a concentrated syrup remains. Warm the pears in a microwave before serving and drizzle with the syrup. Top with whipped cream, if desired.

Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a medium bowl, combine the dry ingredients and set aside. In a separate bowl, cream together the sugar and oil. Add eggs one at a time, stirring to mix between each addition. Then incorporate the vanilla and canned pumpkin. When combined, introduce the dry ingredients a little at a time. Mix in the water. Pour the batter into a bread loaf pan that’s been lightly greased with coconut oil and bake for 45 minutes to an hour, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool for at least 30 minutes before serving.

orange and gingerbread pinwheel cookies makes 3 dozen Ingredients: Orange Layer ⅔ cup unsalted butter, softened 1 egg 2 tsp. vanilla extract 2½ cups all-purpose flour ¾ cup sugar ½ tsp. baking powder ¼ tsp. salt Zest of one navel orange Gingerbread Layer 4 tbsp. flour 2 tbsp. molasses 2 tsp. ginger 1 tsp. cinnamon ½ tsp. nutmeg Instructions: Using an electric mixer, make the sugar cookie dough by combining all wet ingredients from Part 1 and sifting in the dry ingredients. Remove the dough from the mixer and divide in half. Roll one-half of the dough between two sheets of wax paper into a 16-by-8-inch rectangle. Add the other half back into your bowl and begin Part 2 by adding in the flour, molasses and spices. As with the first half, sandwich this half between two sheets of wax paper and roll into a 16-by-8-inch rectangle as well. Place in the freezer for 15 minutes. When dough is set, place one half on top of the other and roll dough together (along the short side) into a log to create the pinwheel spiral. If the dough is cracking, wait a minute or two to allow it to soften and then try again. Wrap the 16-inch log with plastic wrap and refrigerate for two hours. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and remove the dough from the refrigerator. Cut into quarter-inch rounds and bake for 9 to 11 minutes, rotating sheets halfway through, until the surface looks slightly cracked and the edges are just barely browned. Cool before serving. Pairs well with eggnog.

Bellevue Club mother-daughter teams talk about how giving back to the community changed their lives

young girls, Taylor Johnson and Sara Bowar began participating in community service with their moms, Marilyn Johnson and Diana Bowar. They are all members of the National Charity League (NCL), Inc., a mother-daughter focused nonprofit organization that provides service opportunities to local philanthropies. As a six-year journey, it has become an unexpectedly rewarding lifestyle for all four women, and now they encourage others to do the same. The NCL has 270 chapters across the country and holds the following three pillars as their foundation: community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. The girls and mothers of the Emerald City chapter use these guidelines to serve roughly 20 local philanthropies, all while learning life and leadership skills along the way. The group volunteers for both large organizations, like Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, as well as small, privately run operations. Currently, they are working with a range of groups, including the National and Washington Special Olympics, Mountains to Sound Greenway, Jubilee Reach, Birthday Dreams, Bellevue Arts Museum, Seattle Children’s Hospital Guild and The Ruby Room, which helps underprivileged kids obtain homecoming dresses, and many more. “Seeing your daughter in those environments just touches your heart,” Marilyn says. “And it gives our girls so many different kinds of opportunities to give back.” “They love it, and it’s become a part of who they are and what they do,” Diana says. “It’s not a matter of if they’re going to do something, but what are they going to do.” Currently, Taylor is a senior at Bellevue High School and Sara a junior. At this point, the girls are organizing charitable events, running committees and holding meetings on their own, which they say are important skills they will use as they prepare for college and professional lives.

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: DIANA BOWAR, SARA BOWER, TAYLOR JOHNSON, MARILYN JOHNSON

But, the experience also gave them an avenue to build character— strengthening empathy, compassion and a sense of responsibility for those in the community who have less than them. “Watching them handle situations and interact with people who don’t have as much luck in their life means everything,” Diana says. “It’s shown them they can make an impact right in their backyards.” Marilyn and Diana also lead by example. This year, they are co-presidents of the chapter, and say it’s been an incredible experience. There is the obvious service piece, but it also brought them closer to their daughters in a way nothing else could. “That’s one of the best things, the conversation that comes up. Some of our best conversations are in the car after we volunteer,” Marilyn says. “It’s mainly moms and daughter just doing amazing things,” Diana says.

Junior, Bellevue High School Why did you choose to get involved with the National Charity League (NCL)? We were new to Bellevue High School, and I had been encouraged by some friends to join as it is a great way to meet new people and find volunteer opportunities to get your community service hours that are required for graduation. What does being a philanthropist mean to you? Getting out of your comfort zone while helping out people who need help in our local community. What lessons have you learned throughout your years with NCL? Teamwork, leadership, communication, life preparation, cultural enrichment and college readiness Are there any special moments working with the NCL that stand out to you? Getting to meet some of my best friends and in the process having fun volunteering together How has it affected the relationship with your mom? What about your peers? My mom and I have a ton of fun going to different events and getting to meet other moms and daughters in our chapter. Do you have any advice for your peers who might want to get more involved with charities or the NCL? If you’re thinking about joining, I encourage you to do it. You have the chance to find different philanthropies that you might not have been exposed to as our chapter has 20 different philanthropies that we support. It’s a great way to give back to our community while meeting good people and building deeper relationships with the girls in your class and chapter! • 38 | december 2019 reflections

Taylor Johnson

Senior, Bellevue High School Why did you choose to get involved with the National Charity League (NCL)? When I first started NCL, I was in 7th grade. I started because my mom wanted me to, and I thought it would be a fun volunteer service to do with my friends. I didn’t know NCL would become such a big part of my life, but I’m so glad I am a part of it. What does being a philanthropist mean to you? To me, being a philanthropist means doing something for the greater good. It means putting others before yourself and seeing the big picture while also focusing on the details. I can now see the world from new and unique perspectives. What lessons have you learned throughout your years with NCL? I have progressed my communication skills, public speaking skills, and leadership skills through NCL. As a lead representative for NCL, I must take initiative while also encouraging and inspiring others. Being a leader has strengthened my perspective on various topics as well as communication tactics. I’ve worked with numerous people ranging from peers to the owners of large organizations such as Jubilee Reach, Sophia’s Way, and YWCA. Being a leader has allowed me to learn more about philanthropic services and cultural awareness that I implement in other parts of my life as well. Are there any special moments working with the NCL that stand out to you? There are many moments during my time with NCL that have been favorites. Organizing the Easter, Halloween, and Valentine’s day parties for the kids at Jubilee reach is always super fun and I love seeing how happy the kids are when they get there. How has it affected the relationship with your mom? What about your peers? As a class, we have grown closer over the years in NCL. We all have fun doing philanthropy, culture, and bonding events and we have become responsible, accountable, proactive, and enthusiastic as a class. My relationship with my mom has strengthened due to NCL. We have volunteered together for at least 30 hours every year and have our favorite charities that we like to volunteer at. I’ve grown up doing NCL with my mom, and I will miss it next year. Do you have any advice for your peers who might want to get more involved with charities or the NCL? To be as involved as you can with NCL. Figure out which charities and philanthropies you like volunteering at the best and try your best to be on the board for your class—it’s fun and a great way to learn and develop leadership skills and experience. •

ATHLETE’S GUIDE TO SURVIVING COLD TRAINING IN GENERAL,

exercise is essential for good health, no matter the season. However, being active in freezing weather presents unique challenges for the body. If you tend to train hard in cold temperatures, poor planning can lead to exhaustion and a suppressed immune system. This can leave you susceptible to everything from respiratory infections to the full-blown flu. If you don’t want to spend your holidays lying on a couch, remember these training and recovery tips and tricks.

PAY ATTENTION TO HYDRATION: Cold weather can suppress your desire to drink water. While you might not sweat as much, water vapor is expelled in greater quantities through the breath as your body works to warm the freezing air. This is important for skiers and snowshoers who tend to expend copious amounts of energy while sweating very little. Even if you aren’t thirsty, drink water and electrolytes like it is a summer afternoon. Your body will thank you and recover much quicker. LAYER, LAYER, LAYER: Sweat levels don’t just affect your hydration. Wearing even slightly sweat-

soaked clothing can cause your body to exert more energy to stay warm. Dress in many layers so you can shed the outermost layers as soon as you feel your core temperature ramping up. Remember, it’s OK to feel a little chilly, especially when starting to exercise, in order to maintain a dry base layer throughout the activity.

MAINTAIN OPTIMAL NUTRITION: When in cold temperatures, especially at higher elevations, you

have to work harder to maintain a healthy temperature. To aid your body, feed it a steady pace of healthy foods throughout the day. This isn’t an opportunity to try a new fad diet or fasting for the first time. Give your body plenty of reliable fuel.

GET MORE SLEEP: Sleep is crucial for recovery, and you might want even more during the colder months. With less daylight and more energy expenditure during waking hours, it’s the perfect time to snuggle up, channel your inner grizzly bear and get some extra sleep.

bellevue club december 2019 | 43

COLD HARD FACTS HOW COLD IS TOO COLD:

According to the University of Wisconsin Madison, zero degrees F might be a good indicator that indoor activity is a safer option. Anything under negative 20 degrees F should be not be attempted as frostbite can occur on the face and extremities within a short exposure time. WIND CHILL CALCULATIONS:

Wind chill should be a factor when determining whether to lace up the running shoes or head out on a bike ride. Athletes need to remember to account for their speed when crunching the numbers. Simply add your mph speed to the wind speed to get an accurate understanding of the chill you face. WARM UP IN THE WARMTH:

Warming up is crucial for the body to get ready for any kind of movement. But, no need to suffer more than necessary. If possible, warm up, cool down and stretch inside, near the comfort of a heater. Your joints, which take a particularly long time to adjust to the cold, will thank you when it’s time to recover.

RELIABLE RECOVERY You might desire a little more heat with your recovery treatment after suffering chilling winds, but for the most part, rely on timetested recovery habits to get you through: RELAX: Epsom salt or ice bath, do what makes you feel calm after long periods of exertion. Massages are often a great idea during cold days to aid with circulation to the extremities. REST: After time in the snow, your body often begs for rest. Counteract the cold with lots of sleep and leisure. REPLENISH: Choose what nourishes your body

best, and enjoy it. Keep it simple and packed with nutrition so you can feel your best even on week-long winter vacations.

REJOICE: One of the benefits of recreational

winter sports is often the company. Spend your recovery evenings recounting the thrills and experiences you had with loved ones.

COLD-INDUCED CONDITIONS Prolonged exposure to the cold isn’t just uncomfortable. It can cause debilitating health conditions. While frostbite is the most hyped concern, there is a spectrum of ways lower temps can show up in your body: CHILBLAINS: According to the Mayo Clinic,

chilblains are “painful inflammation of small blood vessels in your skin that occur in response to repeated exposure to cold but not freezing air. Also known as pernio, chilblains can cause itching, red patches, swelling and blistering on your hands and feet.” Chilblains often heal by themselves after being removed from cold conditions, but may reoccur season after season. Risk factors include low body fat, gender (women are more susceptible), poor circulation, autoimmune disorders and clothing that restricts blood flow or remains wet for prolonged amount of time.

TRENCH FOOT: This term was coined by soldiers

during WWII, and it occurs after extended exposure to cold, and specifically wet, conditions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention list the symptoms as “tingling and/or itching sensation, pain, swelling, cold, and blotchy skin, numbness and a prickly or heavy feeling in the foot. The foot may be red, dry and painful after it becomes warm. Blisters may form, followed by skin and tissue dying and falling off. In severe cases, untreated trench foot can involve the toes, heel or entire foot.” The best way to prevent trench foot is to keep footwear and socks dry.

FROSTBITE: One of the most severe cold-induced conditions is frostbite, which occurs in three stages. The first stage results in redness and tingling and can be treated with first-aid warming procedures. Stage two is superficial frostbite, and the signature symptom is warming of the skin despite being exposed to frigid cold. This is a sign of serious damage and can result in blistering that appears up to 24 hours after the initial exposure. The most serious stage, stage three, leads to muscle or joint failure and extreme blistering that occurs 24 to 48 hours after exposure. This is when the tissue turns black, dies and potentially falls off the body. HYPOTHERMIA: When the body’s internal temperature drops below 95 degree F, hypothermia sets in. This can result first in slurred speech, extreme shivering and fatigue, and proceeds with abnormal heart rates and death. The easiest way to prevent the condition is to dress properly and not leave any parts of the body exposed when facing extreme temperatures and wind chills. SKIER’S THUMB: This isn’t a condition based on temperature, but still a common injury this time of year. Skier’s thumb occurs when an athlete falls and jams the thumb into a pole. This injury is best treated by a physician.

MAPPING AN INTENTIONAL LIFE

48 | december 2019 reflections

BELLEVUE CLUB MEMBER DANA V. ADAMS CREATED A GUIDE TO HELP YOU LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE. A few years ago, Dana V. Adams felt stuck. She had built a successful real estate career, had a nice home in Kirkland and four thriving young boys. But she couldn’t ignore a nagging feeling there was more to her story, that she was supposed to be doing something more impactful with her life. “There was this low-lying intuitive knowledge that I was not maximizing my skills and how I could contribute to the world,” she says. From a young age, Adams’s mother had taught her to use the power of goal setting. In her mid20s, she began formally, systematically writing down her life goals and the steps necessary to achieve them, a process known as life mapping. Around the time she felt stuck, she turned to the skill to uncover the reason behind the unsettled feeling she was experiencing.

“I REALIZED I was very bothered by

the fact that I had certain goals that were in alignment with the life I wanted, but I was not doing anything to get closer to them,” Adams says. “There was a gap that existed, and so I began asking myself: What’s in the way; why am I not achieving these goals?” Her unattained dreams included becoming a public speaker and author and helping more people improve their own lives. She says the answer to why she constantly put those goals on hold surprised her. “We all tell ourselves stories about ourselves. Oftentimes they start when we are very young, and unfortunately they often result in very harsh, repetitive negative thoughts,” Adams says. Suffering from multiple childhood traumas, including her mother taking her own life and an unreliable father figure, Adams says she had many residual stories about who she was and what she was capable of doing. She had been in counseling since age 12, but still lacked actions she could take to change those stories, which she says held her back and created the gaps in her dreams.

“I had to make a conscious choice to replace the negative thoughts with positive affirmations and loving, nurturing, wise thoughts. I decided to eliminate the inner critic that kept trying to keep me in check,” she says. “I had to distinguish the difference and see that potentially old thoughts and beliefs were stopping me.” This realization led her to expand on the life-mapping process. Previously, she used life mapping to methodically organize and schedule her priorities. But it lacked an emotional, introspection piece that dug into why some goals stayed on paper for years without any action while others were easily accomplished and checked off. Adams found that those reasons often coincided with the opinions she held about herself, beliefs like “I’m not good enough, smart enough, skilled enough.” She began writing about some of these complicated feelings and issues. She found that when she started digging into her beliefs, values, inner thoughts and goals, it helped her see things more clearly and rewrite those narratives. Once she did this, everything fell into place. “The goal became to create something tangible to help people, myself included, take a look at some of these complicated concepts—not in a confronting, judgmental way, but in a helpful way,” she says.

“I’M LIVING A CALMER LIFE TODAY BECAUSE I’M HONORING MY INTUITION AND WHAT I WAS CALLED TO DO.”

With permission from Bill Cohen, the creator and author of Life Mapping, she embarked on creating a tool that expanded the life-mapping concept to a new level. In 2018, she began writing a book and companion guide called Live Your Gift. By May 2019, the materials were written, designed and available for purchase. Since, she has expanded her vision to include online and in-person workshops that individuals or professional organizations can attend to go through the program. “It gives you a little shield because it provides an elevated awareness surrounding the intentions for your life. That allowed me to start taking steps I hadn’t before,” she says. Soon she will release a version of the companion guide for teens who might struggle with the challenge of transitioning into or out of high school and college. She plans for it to be available in early 2020. “It helps them create a clear set of goals that are specific to get where they want to go,” Adams says. “With all the outside pressures they face, they need to hear that they have permission to realize and design their own lives.” As for her own life, creating this process and book serendipitously helped her cross off some of those goals she had been ignoring. “Currently, I’m living a calmer life today because I’m honoring my intuition and what I was called to do. I’m living in integrity,” she says. “The biggest message I have is that I’m an average person who had major challenges to overcome, some going all the way back to my childhood. But if you desire a better life, you want something different, and you’re resisting it, you’re supposed to pay attention to that resistance. For more information, please visit Address it head-on. That’s what it took for me to change the way I was lifemappinginstitute.com. thinking.”

Loren Kite, program director of Kids’ Carpentry, talks about how a hammer and saw can boost kids’ creativity and confidence. Why did you start Kids’ Carpentry? Loren Kite: I have a background in carpentry and children’s theater. I lived in Oakland for a couple years, and Kids’ Carpentry is a program that’s been around there since the early ’80s. I got a job teaching there. When my family moved back to Seattle, I looked around and realized there wasn’t anything like it, not even in the schools. Why does woodworking resonate with you? LK: I have been working with wood since I was a kid, using scraps from my garage and that kind of thing. I love creating stuff, and there’s something so satisfying about taking a wooden board and turning it into a tangible thing, whether it’s a game, a car or a piece of furniture.

bellevue club december 2019 | 55

What are your favorite things to make? LK: Personally, I build a lot of furniture. I have a few pieces at home that I’m really proud of. With Kids’ Carpentry, I get the chance to build all sorts of crazy things— we’ve built pinball machines, little libraries, moving vehicles, a racetrack—all these really cool things that satisfy the kid in me. What are the benefits of woodworking for young children? LK: A lot of what we do is simple math disguised as a good time. Kids use measuring, fractions, accuracy, proportions, geometry—all that basic stuff. That’s on top of developing fine motor skills, boosting creativity and gaining self-esteem.

DON’T MISS THE MOTHER-SON: CRAFTSMANS WORKSHOP •

FRIDAY, JAN. 10, 6-8 P.M.

Hammers, nails, glue and paint – everything needed for a fun DIY night. $60/mother-son pair, $30/additional participant

How does it boost self-esteem? LK: Kids go to a store and see a car wrapped up in plastic, and they think, I could never make that. Well, actually, you can. You just need the tools and instruction for it. We have kids in tears on the first day because everything looks hard and seems difficult. They’re seeing saws and hammers, tools they aren’t allowed access to normally. But in six weeks, they have a real moving car with parts that they have built from scratch. That’s huge for kids. Do you have any tips for working with kids and carpentry? LK: The most important thing is to allow them to make mistakes. They don’t need to do it right the first time, they need to make mistakes so they can figure out how to do it better the next time. As adults, we tend to step in way too much. The best thing is to give them space to trust in themselves. It’s about the experience. What is the most common challenge kids face during the process? LK: There’s often a block that they can’t do it, that it’s going to be too hard. Making the leap that they can do this, that’s the biggest challenge. What can participants expect from the workshop you’re hosting at the Club in January? LK: Kids can expect to complete three projects and gain a wide variety of carpentry skills—assembling, cutting, trying different tools. By the end, they will take home three items they never expected to be able to make.

bellevue club december 2019 | 57

When the workshop is over, kids often want to continue to sharpen their new skills. Here are Kite’s suggestions for continued at-home learning:

KEY TOOL Aside from the simple hammer and saw, Kite says a crucial tool for kids is a miter box. It’s $10 from a hardware store, and it holds a saw in a guide to cut straight lines with accuracy. Kids can cut anything safely with this tool.

BEST RESOURCES Kids’ Carpentry works with many local libraries that have tons of books on woodworking available. YouTube videos are also a great way to learn new techniques at home.

TIPS Do it with your children. Woodworking is a great way for parents to interact with their kids in a positive way. Make something that you can use in or around the house, like a game, small table or storage box for their toys. For more information please visit kidscarpentryseattle.com.

BALI BUCKET LIST written

by

samantha lund

Like others, we were called to Bali by the images that social media influencers were sharing of the ideal 2018 millennial hot spot. Girls in bathtubs covered in flower petals, couples standing in water temples and women in gowns flying across the sky in tree-top swings were all too common for me to ignore. So I did what anyone would do and grabbed my partner in crime, and headed to Indonesia to see if paradise was really just a 23-hour plane ride away.

60 | december 2019 reflections

BEGINNING WITH CULTURE IN UBUD We decided to split our time across three cities—Bali is known for having very different “vibes” in different areas across the island. Ubud, the most well known for being a cultural hub is located in the middle of Bali with no sandy beaches, just waterfalls and forests. Our hotel was located off the main strip, among several that sit sporadically through a series of rice patties. Our driver dropped us off on the main road, and we followed a cobblestone walkway about 100 yards through a field to reach the doors. Each hotel in Ubud is relatively similar with a few defining characteristics: stone statues, open-air suites and private infinity pools looking off into the rice patties. After settling in, we hit the streets in search of food and fun. Ubud is known for coffee tasting, local markets and the Monkey Forest. Stop one was to see the monkeys, of course. Before traveling to Bali, I had heard horror stories about how the monkeys take people’s belongings out of their pockets or purses and then bite them when they try to retrieve their belongings—none of which were the case during our trip. Baby monkeys lounged in their mothers’ arms, while others played in the trees above. The signal of a bell nearby tells everyone that it’s time for a snack, and if you follow the noise, you’ll find dozens of monkeys lining up for a treat from a park ranger. I’d recommend this stop for anyone, any age. Next, we took a trip to the Ubud Market, which is composed of a few alleys behind the main streets with stocked booths holding colorful fabrics, metals, jewels and fruits. The market in Ubud is one of the few in Bali that’s still used by locals for food and fabric as well as tourists looking for souvenirs. Bring your cash and walking shoes; it’s easy to spend an entire afternoon exploring the stalls and bargaining to your heart’s content.

DON’T MISS

The coffee—where do I begin? Balinese coffee is special for a few reasons: it’s all grown locally, it’s wet-processed (meaning the fruit-like coating of the bean is removed before drying unlike traditional coffee beans) and each café brews their coffee differently. Coffee shops line every corner of Ubud, ready to brew up their special version, or if you prefer going to the source, smaller coffee plantations are found throughout the countryside and are open for tastings every day.

SOAK UP THE SUN IN CANGGU From Ubud we took a 45-minute taxi ride to Canggu, a formerly sleepy beach town turned hipster paradise. Canggu is famous for its cafes, beaches, food and night life. We stayed at a little place called Alternative Beach, which is half-hostel, half-luxury hotel with a large pool, waterslide, yoga classes and poolside restaurant. Alternative Beach doubles as a daytime pool location with an entrance fee for anyone looking to spend an afternoon drinking and soaking up the sun before heading back to their hotel or the beach. After spending days walking around Ubud’s rocky streets, I had a few goals in Canggu: relax, rejuvenate and soak up the Balinese “wellness culture” of great food, spirits, massages and gorgeous scenery. The change from Ubud to Canggu is almost a culture shock; Ubud has lush forests with quaint coffee roasters, while Canggu is an Instagram paradise with bars and shops catering to the millennial crowd with pictureworthy corners and gimmicks.

The Canggu market is much more modern, with hip clothes and jewelry still at great prices but catering to the western version of “shopping” versus “bargaining.” We skipped the market and instead headed over to the Deus Ex Machina “Temple of Enthusiasm,” which is a motorcycle shop turned apparel store turned bar and event spot. Locals visit this spot to get their bikes worked on while visitors shop the racks and have a drink at the bar. On this very special Tuesday, the manager told us about an event they were having that evening: Tacos and Tattoos. Next time you’re in Bali, if you dare, buy a taco and get a free tattoo at this famous motorcycle shop. The next few days of our trip we spent lounging at day clubs around the city, including Finns Beach Club and the Lawn, which both offer beach-side pools, full bar menus and tropical drinks with live music. Renting a daybed is easy, and two people can lounge for hours watching the surfers enjoy the waves while kids play on the sandy beach.

DON’T MOVE A MUSCLE I don’t know if it was the amount of running around we’d been doing all week or the slow-paced lifestyle of Canggu, but the third leg of our trip got derailed. We were to visit Uluwatu, a sleepy cliff-side town with white sandy beaches. However, the day before we were supposed to leave, we found ourselves wanting to stay right where we were. “Bali isn’t going anywhere,” I found myself saying as I extended my stay in our suite and walked back out to the pool, reminding myself that I could always come back next year and explore new cities—I wasn’t done with Canggu. That day we watched poolside yoga in the morning and a beachfront photo shoot in the afternoon. At night, we got dinner at Billy Ho, which to this day is one of the most inventive, delicious dinners I’ve ever eaten. The owner was in the kitchen making Japanese-inspired dishes, while hip patrons were seated in booths all around, enjoying cocktails in a chic bar and lounge setting. After eating more food than we really needed, we headed over to a well-known pizza joint, Luigi’s, which doubles as a concert venue, where we listened to music all night long. We woke up the next morning late but ready to find the next café, pool and beach on our list.
