HOURS OF OPERATION
TYPICALLY, JANUARY IS THE TIME TO SET NEW HEALTH GOALS AND RESOLUTIONS, AND DECEMBER IS ALL ABOUT INDULGENCE. BUT, WE’RE MIXING IT UP AND ASKING: Why wait to try something new? Need to shake up your workout routine? Turn to page 50 and read about the benefits of kickboxing from our new instructor, a mixed martial artist with a few titles and tons of experience under his belt. This dynamic class will get your heart pumping, but also challenge your coordination, balance and speed. If you really like the physicality of the sport, you may also want to check out the wreck room mentioned on page 34. If it’s your nutrition that needs a boost, flip to page 24 and find out how a nutrition coach can design a plan that’s perfect for you. By asking some unusual questions, Annelise explains she isn’t your standard dietitian. Her approach is focused mainly on changing your habits around eating instead of dissecting your daily macros. If you’ve already got your lifestyle dialed in and just want some inspiration to challenge yourself in 2019, look no further than Kayla Kobelin’s story on page 40. The 24-year-old member is a powerhouse triathlete who recently gave up her day job to pursue her dream.

BRINGING ‘CIVILITY’ BACK
A recently constructed 30,000-square-foot public-private passenger terminal at Paine Field in Everett will begin serving travelers early next year. Brett Smith, founder and CEO of Propeller Airports, wants to shake up the world of American commercial aviation. At the start of this year, he moved from New York to Washington to do just that. Smith’s company is funding the construction of a new 30,000-square-foot passenger terminal at Everett’s Paine Field, which as early as January 2019 will begin serving travelers from all over the Eastside and north Puget Sound.
There is a special home being built at 15125 Southeast 40th Place in Bellevue. It has an open floor plan epicurean kitchen, a master suite with a spa feel, vaulted ceilings, smart additions, and so much more. But what makes this home special isn’t all that luxury. The builder is MN Custom Homes and they are donating the profits from the sale of this home to Bellevue nonprofit Jubilee REACH.

DINING FEATURE
WHAT IS A NUTRITION COACH? If you have a nutrition goal, Annelise Digiacomo can create a meal plan for you, but she’d rather discuss how you feel about what you eat. In favor of trading calorie counting for habitformation techniques, she has a new approach to diet and lifestyle that might just be the missing link.
Annelise Digiacomo argues there are two factors to eating a healthy diet: nutrition and habit. Nutrition is understanding the science behind food. For example, knowing what fats, carbohydrates and proteins are, and how they function in the body. Or having a knowledge base of which foods provide what vitamins and minerals. Essentially, it’s knowing what makes up our food and how it interacts, negatively or positively, inside the body. Food habits—how, where and why we consume what we do—are a bit more complicated. However, Digiacomo says sometimes it is more important to be mindful of when setting a nutrition goal, or making a modification to an existing way of consuming food.
“Nutrition coaching is about making changes with routine and consistency, and how to do that,” Digiacomo says. “Sometimes the issue is not in the meal and nutrition itself. Sometimes it’s about another area of your life. I look at all the systems a client has in relationship to nutrition and then help set them up for success.”

“Sometimes the issue is not in the meal and nutrition itself. Sometimes it’s about another area of your life. I look at all the systems a client has in relationship to nutrition and then help set them up for success.” Digiacomo is a nutrition coach, personal trainer and endurance athlete who has been in the health and fitness industry for more than 15 years. She says, personally, she found that dialing in her own habits was a huge missing link when it came to reaching her own goals with weight and fitness. Now she is dedicated to helping others think about this often-overlooked component. In getting clients to honestly assess their current habits and create new ones, she often asks questions about when and where clients eat, how a meal makes them feel, and why they eat what they do. She stresses there’s no judgment about the answers; clients simply provide her with an idea of what they value. “A big part of coaching is defining a value base. So I ask: Why is that valuable to you; how do you want to live; and what stories do you tell yourself? I often have people finish the sentence: I eat this way because . . . And then I help people align themselves with how they want to be.” Digiacomo says all these questions don’t have to be answered or addressed right away. In fact, she says change should start very small. “We can take a look at just one meal. Maybe it’s lunch,” she says. “We can talk about ways to make just one meal better for you, and go from there.” Nutrition coaching helps with weight loss, sports performance and optimizing wellness. DETOX
SAUNAS
BENEFITS
Saunas can bring relief for migraines, which are often due to a lack of regulation in the pressure of blood vessels. Saunas detoxify the body by getting rid of toxins, and heavy metals through sweating, giving a helping hand to our kidneys; the heat produced in the sauna dilates the pores and sweat eliminates toxins and dead skin cells for more elastic and youthful-looking skin.

WELLNESS FEATURE
T H E M O D E R N A P O T H E C A RY Recently, you’ve seen it everywhere: all-natural remedies, farm-to-table facials, chemical-free cleansers. In the last few years, there’s been a call for all-natural substitutes to chemically created goods and medicines. With that, we’ve seen the rise of the modern apothecary. The Madrona House, one of Seattle’s well-established apothecary hubs, sits nestled between corporate buildings and offices just blocks from Madrona Park. Visitors are greeted with fresh tea brewing and the smell of essential oils in the air. Vanessa Ainslie, a former massage therapist turned healer, created Madrona House as a safe space for mind-body integrative healing and practice. “Energetic medicine is different. It’s subtle in a world that’s constantly in unrest,” she says. “And remedies like this are a welcome change.” What, exactly, is mind-body integrative healing? It’s more about the process than the before and after, Ainslie explains. To begin, customers sit for a talking session to discuss what they’d like to change in their lives. Anything from physical, mental or emotional goals are on the table. Ainslie sees her process work wonders on them all.

From there, each person is given a plan, which usually includes talk therapy and bodywork (massage, energy clearing, sound healing, chakra balancing and cord cutting). “We have these energetic fields where pain and trauma are held and vibrate at certain frequencies,” Ainslie explains. “By weaving therapeutic dialoguing, bodywork and energy work, we are able to integrate your experiences and call all your soul parts home.” Ainslie practices mind-body therapy because she doesn’t believe Western medicine or therapy is pleasurable for the patient. Traditional therapy talks things through until they’re solved or the patient is tired of talking about the same thing over and over again, Ainslie explains. Her approach adds bodywork to make the experience more pleasurable. “Adding bodywork like sound healing makes it pleasurable to work through these issues,” Ainslie says. “A lot of the time it comes back to finding self-love, forgiveness or just compassionately holding space for your feelings.” Of course, not everyone wants to go on a healing journey. Madrona House also hosts consistent classes including yoga, rituals, sound baths and healing sessions open to anyone interested in a mini-journey.

W H AT TO T RY THE NEXT TIME YOU STO P BY
ESSENTIAL OILS can be found almost
anywhere, but an apothecary offers a sustainable means for purchasing them and also getting information about how and why they affect your home space. When used correctly, essential oils are believed to reduce anxiety, calm nerves and even act against colds and allergies.
A TINCTURE is created by dissolving a medicine in alcohol. Ainslie makes tinctures for everything from immune support to anxiety soothing and digestive relief. CRYSTALS are some of the most misused products. “Most people think you can set it in your home and it will work,” Ainslie says. “Every stone vibrates at different frequencies and it’s worth holding them and trying to create the relationship with them so they can work.” While visiting an expert, Ainslie suggests customers ask about crystals and get advice before trying to use them.
VANESSA AINSLIE
In studying energetic herbal medicine, Ainslie is also the creator of her own line of oils, teas, self-care essentials and metaphysical tools. If you’re looking to practice healing at home, this is the perfect place to begin. Each of her products is organic and sustainably crafted. Everything, other than the threads and seals on the tops of bottles, is made of reusable glass. Ainslie also encourages repeat customers to bring in their old bottles to be sanitized and reused. For more information about Madrona House, visit madronahouseapothecary.com.

SELF-CARE ESSENTIALS are common in many apothecaries right now. With the current craze over self-care and self-love, apothecaries are just one of several places where customers can talk to an expert about the results they’re looking for and buy sustainable, reusable, responsible products. METAPHYSICAL SUPPLIES sound
daunting, but they can be used to create atmosphere in your home. Smudges are traditionally used to wash off the outside world when entering a sacred space; however, they’re more commonly used to clean rooms of bad air or feelings. Infused oils can be used in a similar way to create sacred spaces or “charge” rooms.

SMASHING STRESS: SEATTLE’S NEW WRECK ROOM • AS THE SAYING GOES, “RULES ARE MEANT TO BE BROKEN,” BUT NOW, THANKS TO A SMALL BUSINESS IN OUR BACKYARD, YOU CAN BREAK A LOT MORE. • Have some unsettled anger, or maybe you’re just feeling a little wound up or stir-crazy from the rain? Destruction experts opened Rage Industry in 2017, catering to everyone with pent-up aggression. Rage Industry is Seattle’s first “rage room,” which provides a safe space for customers to, literally, smash stuff. Depending on the package you choose, a room costs from $25 to $100, which includes weapons (baseball bats, golf clubs, hammers and crowbars) and a box of smash-able stuff (donated or recycled glassware, furniture, knickknacks and even toilets).

We have to tell them no.” Rage Industry was founded by Seattle native Leslie Nguyen, who wholeheartedly believes in the stress-reducing power and pure joy that breaking things promotes. Rage rooms are relatively new, and science hasn’t quite caught up to studying their specific benefits; however, the concept isn’t new. The catharsis theory of aggression in psychology implies that through aggression (verbal or physical) emotions associated with trauma come to the surface and are then purged. The catharsis theory has since been disproven as a “productive” way to handle one’s emotions since violent spurts can lead to more aggressive behavior. However, most psychologists will agree that if you’re cognizant of the difference between violence and aggression, and maintain healthy outlets for rage that involve deep breathing, introspection and perhaps therapy, there’s nothing wrong with breaking things to find catharsis. As Dr. Amit Sood, a medical professor at the Mayo Clinic, said, “It’s better to break a TV than a nose, that’s for sure.” In most instances, a wrecking room is a great experience, providing short-term relief. For most, rage rooms can be a wellness tool and a chance to get momentary relief.

5 WAYS TO CHANNEL YOUR ANGER • BESIDES SMASHING THINGS
Deep breathing is a widely recognized way to reduce anger and stress levels. According to Psychology Today, anger physiologically arouses your body, so responding with deep breaths can reduce that arousal and relax you. Reach out to people around you that can help. If you’re consistently overwhelmed with anger, find a psychologist or doctor you trust to talk with. Exercise is a great way to spot-reduce anger and stress. According to a study by the University of Georgia, moderate exercise immediately after an upsetting experience can help manage anger by releasing endorphins.
If you’re aware of the downside to expressing physical anger, there’s no reason to stop yourself from smashing plates until you’re out of breath and too tired to swing any more. Need more reasons to go have a smash session? Rage Industry has seen it all: people come in for pure fun, some for divorce parties, others for team bonding. Nothing would shock Leslie and her team at this point. Of course, safety comes first. Remember when you book your first session to wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes. Her team will fit you with a protective bodysuit and goggles. There are also speakers in the rage area, so blasting your favorite playlist is always encouraged. Bring your own box of breakables and get a reduced room rate. The best part of it all? They’ll take care of all the cleanup. For more information, please visit rageindustry.com.
38 | december 2018 reflections
Listening to music is another enjoyable way to reduce anger and stress. The structure of a song is known to calm the mind, and the emotional link to certain songs is known to promote positivity. Know that it’s okay to be angry, but violence is never the answer. There are times when being angry is a correct response, and reminding yourself of that is sometimes all you can do.

MEMBER PROFILE
Bellevue Club member and triathlete Kayla Kobelin talks about preparing for her first year as a professional athlete and the process that led her to the decision to quit her day job.
IN
August, when I first met Kayla Kobelin, she was sitting on the fence in regard to the biggest decision of her life. She had just recently completed her third Ironman triathlon and her results were impressive; she won her age group and placed fourth overall in the female division. Most importantly, her performance qualified her for a pro card. So at age 24, she was left to weigh her options and grapple with one big question: Should she quit her corporate job in wealth management to pursue life as a professional triathlete? Kobelin knew if she said yes to going pro she would be sacrificing stability, a regular paycheck and growth in her budding career—all things she admits gave her a great sense comfort. “Life bumming around as a professional triathlete isn’t glamorous,” Kobelin says. “But I didn’t want to look back and think, I could’ve been a really good athlete. I had this really cool opportunity and not a lot of people get the chance to go after their dream.” written

“But I didn’t want to look back and think, I could’ve been a really good athlete. I had this really cool opportunity and not a lot of people get the chance to go after their dream.”
K
obelin, a Bellevue native, beams as she talks about training, racing and the excitement that comes with having the chance to compete on a professional level. “But it’s also so terrifying. It took two months for me to make the decision,” she says. “I wrote it all out, made pros and cons lists, talked to a bunch of people. I didn’t want to make the decision just based on emotions.” In the end, she did it. In September, she had the difficult discussion with her boss and told him that she wanted to start a career as a professional triathlete. But there was still one more race in 2018, and it was the most important one of the year—the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. It would be her last performance as an amateur and her first chance to start talking to her peers about the jump into pro sports. It would set the stage for her debut. Kobelin spent a month in Kona, prior to the race on October 13, acclimating to the heat and notoriously punishing trade winds. During her time there, she trained with other world-class athletes and says all the experiences and connections she made confirmed she’d made the right decision.
42 | december 2018 reflections
However, the big race didn’t go as planned. “The swim was right where I wanted to be. I had the bike of my life. Then I got off my bike and started running, and my hip completely blew up,” she says. “It felt like someone was stabbing me with a knife on every step.” Kobelin has a photo she keeps on her phone of what she looked like during the 26.2 miles she subsequently ran, and her entire face is wincing in pain and she’s crying, which she said she did for more of the race than not. “It got so bad some officials pulled me off the course, and they said, ‘You look like you’re in some pretty bad pain; you know you can drop out, it’s OK.’ I said, ‘I don’t care if I finish this thing in 17 hours, I’m going to finish the marathon.’ And that’s what I did. I literally took it step by step, mile by mile,” she says.

or all the suffering, Kobelin still placed sixth in her age group, and although she wanted a faster time, she said she gained an enormous amount of confidence from the race. She isn’t sure what caused her hip to flare up so badly; she had been training with no pain all month. As an athlete her whole life, she simply says, some days you have it and some days you don’t. “The hardest part for me was to let go of my ego and say, ‘OK, you’re capable of winning this race, but you’re not going to do it today.’ That made it really hard to continue,” she says. The driving force that pushed her to continue was all her friends and family cheering her on through the finish line. The second time I met up with Kobelin, it was two weeks after the race in Kona. Despite her injury, she hadn’t lost a beat. Equipped with three sponsors at the time of publication—Under Armour, Specialized Bicycles and Edge & Spoke—and some others in the works, Kobelin sees her first attempt at Kona as a major milestone and learning experience. Now she is even more prepared to spend the next year of her life—her first as a professional athlete—training hard and living her dream.

GUIDE TO WINTER HIKING The Washington Trails Association is the authority on anything and everything related to hiking in our state. We checked in with WTA hiking guide manager Anna Roth to get expert advice for heading outdoors this winter. written

PICK A TRAIL There are two types of winter hiking trails: a bare trail (like a flat river walk) or snow- and ice-covered routes (found at higher elevations). “The biggest difference is if you’re going to be in the snow, there is slightly different gear you need, more technical gear,” says hiking guide Anna Roth. “My best recommendation is to understand the terrain you’re going on. Research the trail on WTA. org, read the hiking description and get a sense of what the trail is like. Also, it’s important to remember that just because a trail has bare ground in the beginning, doesn’t mean there isn’t snow up higher.” INSIDER TIP
“If you want to maximize your time in the winter, be prepared to drive to or from the trailhead in the dark. Or just pick a shorter hike. There’s a lot less daylight on the whole.”
bellevue club december 2018 | 47
48 | december 2018 reflections
PACK THE RIGHT GEAR Winter gear for all types of trails still focuses on the classic 10 essentials, just a heartier version. “To be safe, always prep for snow and ice. Bring some sort of traction device,” Roth says. Her go-to traction supports are Microspikes and poles. Snowshoes are only needed in soft or deep snow. “I always carry extra layers of clothing too. I find if I don’t use them, someone in the group will.” INSIDER TIP
“My favorite thing is to carry thermoses of warm drinks. Not just hot chocolate either. I love a savory drink, so I pack broth. It can provide a few more calories and some good nutrients.”
EDUCATE YOURSELF If you plan to go snowshoeing or reach a higher elevation, Roth stresses the importance of understanding where avalanche risks exist and how to spot them. She suggests taking the Avalanche Awareness class hosted by REI or going one step further and attending a course with the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education. Lastly, Roth suggests reading up on the local trails. “There’s a very useful piece on our website titled: ‘Does Your Favorite Summer Trail Sport an Avalanche Shoot? How to Know and Where to Go’ Awareness is really important.” INSIDER TIP
“One nifty thing on WTA.org is a direct link to the weather for the trailhead of that hike. It’s next to the driving directions. It’s really helpful if you don’t know how to read snow reports.”
bellevue club december 2018 | 49
WTA RECOMMENDATIONS There are extensive lists of trail options on the website for all levels, but Roth has a few unexpected favorites of her own. “Probably my go-to thing in the winter is a river walk. I’m from southwestern Washington, and I love the coast and lowland rainforest trails in the winter. It’s such interesting terrain that time of year. If I want a more challenging hike, I put together a long loop in the Issaquah Alps. I just don’t have a strong pull to do a 13-hour snowshoe, so I do high mileage in the alps.” INSIDER TIP
“There are so many other good resources on the site, like tips on hiking with kids in the winter, snowshoe recommendations and recipes for stuff to put in your thermos.”

REFLECTIONS MAGAZINE: HOW DID YOU GET INTO KICKBOXING? EDWIN STEPHENS: It’s a funny story. A couple of my high school friends wanted to see who was the toughest and best fighter, so we held a mini tournament. My best friend and I ended up in the final round. We decided to box each other, and the fight ended in a draw. We both took it from there, and we trained each other for years in boxing, kickboxing and mixed martial arts. RM: HOW HAS KICKBOXING IMPROVED YOUR LIFE? ES: I learned how to properly protect myself in handto-hand combat. Also, it really helped me to get out of my shell and meet new people.
54 | december 2018 reflections
RM: WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN KICKBOXING? ES: One of them is my title kumite belt. It felt like everything paid off—all my time spent training and working out, getting mentally and physically ready. It felt good. Also, fighting in front of Demetrious Johnson. It was crazy to realize that a UFC [Ultimate Fighting Championship] champ was cage-side watching me fight.

56 | december 2018 reflections
RM: WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF THROUGH MARTIAL ARTS? ES: It’s all in the mind. We can talk ourselves out of doing things we feel are important. It’s all a state of mind. I learned how to take it slow and figure it out for me. Everyone is not the same; we all learn a bit different no matter how simple the task may be. Take your time to learn, and enjoy your progress. RM: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE GREATEST CHALLENGES YOU’VE FACED IN THE SPORT? ES: Believe it or not, it was convincing my mom to let me fight. One of my biggest supporters really really did not want me to get into this sport, and I understand why. Apart from that, learning how to train smart. Just because you’re in the gym all the time does not mean you are training correctly or using your time wisely. RM: WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE HESITANT TO TRY IT? ES: It’s a fun sport and will get you in great shape. It’s a non-contact program. The only contact is kicking the pads. It’s a great way to work on yourself and, at the same time, have a good time. RM: WHAT ARE THE GREATEST HEALTH BENEFITS SOMEONE CAN EXPECT FROM TAKING UP THIS SPORT? ES: It’s a full-body workout, so you can expect to see yourself getting a bit leaner from the movements that we use. Aside from possible weight loss, your muscle mass will increase as well, and your cardiovascular fitness will improve tremendously.

Edwin is teaching a kickboxing class on Mondays and Thursdays from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room.

Cartagena is the Caribbean you don’t know. With a mix of Latin American culture, beautiful cityscapes and bright blue waters, Colombia’s hidden gem will leave you speechless. ike most travelers, I was wary when I thought about planning a trip to Colombia. Not only because of its rocky past, but also because within Colombia there are many vastly different cultures. Bogotá is a fashion-forward city, Medellín is all about history and Santa Marta is a resort getaway. Through my research, I found Cartagena. It’s an old town with beaches, islands and a relaxed nightlife. I booked my ticket immediately. My travel partner and I spent one week in Cartagena, travelling through Bogotá to get there. The flight doesn’t take long, and since Cartagena is one of the newest hip tourist spots in South America, new flights open up every day.

TR AV EL FE AT UR E
JOURNEY toCOLOMBIA
PASANDO EL RATO EN GETSEMANI: HANGING OUT IN GETSEMANI We spent our first nights in Getsemani, boasted as Cartagena’s coolest up-and-coming neighborhood. Coming from Seattle, we weren’t strangers to hipster-esque coffee shops and street vendors offering the best of their crafts. We spent the first full day wandering the streets, I know, not groundbreaking. However, within this tiny neighborhood are dozens of streets, all covered in graffiti. Turns out, Getsemani is also one of the graffiti capitals of South America. Each street tells a story of an artist, and each artist has a different style. The accumulation of these works is the base for Getsemani’s culture. It’s vibrant, free and fun. Almost everything you need to see in Getsemani happens on the streets. Don’t forget Cartagena is hot and humid, so wake up early to explore, but head back to your hotel for an afternoon dip in the pool or a siesta. Then you can venture back out later (around 8 or 9 p.m.) for dinner and street performances. Welcome to Caribbean time.
60 | december 2018 reflections
At night, don’t miss the giant party in Holy Trinity Square. In the center of the neighborhood, laid-back groups of travelers and locals gather around the square every night to drink beer, eat food and watch performances. On our first night, we happened upon a Michael Jackson and Shakira show, followed by break-dancers.
THINGS TO DO Eat arepas from a street vendor. Walk for an entire day without maps and no destination. Drink a beer in the street. Party with locals till dawn.
PERDERSE EN OLD TOWN: GET LOST IN OLD TOWN Cartagena’s Old Town, also known as the “Walled City,” was founded in the 1500s and still stands tall with a protective cobblestone wall around its border and gorgeous buildings of every color within. We stayed in Old Town for two days and were on our feet for most of it. The city is made of two- to three-story buildings with residences on top and shops on street level. After spending enough time exploring to feel comfortable, we realized there were even more shops to explore after walking through unmarked buildings. Don’t forget Cartagena is a hub for Caribbean and Colombian history. With historic slave-trade buildings, Colombian coffee specialists and emerald emporiums, the Old City tells the rich history of this coastal spot with every step. Walking tours from This Is Cartagena, a local tourism company, range from $15 to $100, depending on how long and which areas you want to explore. One of the best secrets of Colombia is the food. There’s no shortage of paella and seafood restaurants that serve pitchers of sangria so delicious you’ll never want to leave.
On our last night in Old Town, we ventured to Café del Mar, which is one of the more well-known restaurants in the area. Café del Mar is perched on the wall that surrounds the city. After climbing the stairs to the outdoor seating area, guests are practically swept away by 360-degree views of the water to the north and colorful buildings to the south. To end our evening, we walked back to our hotel. (A little-known fact: Cartagena is known for its boutique hotels offering private pools and 360-degree views of the city.) Along the way, we were invited to ride on horsedrawn carriages, and we witnessed beat boxers performing and street vendors offering everything from jewelry to fresh coconuts. No matter how exhausted we felt, the second we heard champeta music ring throughout the streets, we were ready for another night on the town.
DON’T MISS Fresh fruit from street vendors Dinner at Pata Negra de Paco Roncero Cartagena coffee The sunset at Café del Mar Gabriel García Márquez’s home

DESCANSA EN ISLA BARÚ: RELAX AT ISLA BARÚ What’s a Caribbean vacation without bright blue waters and white sands? Cartagena has stretches of beach near the city; however, with the influx of tourism and pollution, those beaches are known to be less clean and filled with tourist traps. For a tropical getaway, we travelled one hour south to Isla Barú. Even though it’s only an hour away, it feels as if another world. The white sandy beaches sparkle along a lush green backdrop. We decided to veer off the beaten path and try a villa at Playa Manglares on the other side of the isle. Playa Manglares is a locally owned, sustainable boutique hotel that rests on the beach, with private chefs and communal dining. We stayed in a tree-house-like room on the third floor with an open-air concept and an outdoor shower. In the morning, we woke up to the sun and the waves crashing on the beach. Olga, the owner, announced when each meal was ready. She was often flanked by one or two of her dogs that live on the property and give away free snuggles on the beach all day long.
62 | december 2018 reflections
ISLAND-HOPPING MUSTS Have a mojito on the beach Visit Pablo Escobar’s castle Go snorkeling Eat fresh-caught fish
On our second day at Olga’s, we chartered a boat for an islandhopping tour. Olga organized the entire trip, so all we had to do was be on the beach at 9 a.m. The speedboat zipped from island to island off the coast, the Rosario Islands. Our tour guides explained how the islands evolved, what they’re used for and the day-to-day life of locals living on these small patches of land at sea. At one stop we had a seaside lunch; at another we went snorkeling; and finally, we ended up on a sandbar in the middle of the ocean, drinking beers and lounging in the sand. Even if you choose to skip Playa Manglares, This Is Cartagena also offers Rosario Island tours from Old Town.
