FEBRUARY IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO CELEBRATE LOVE, AND THIS ISSUE IS DEDICATED SPECIFICALLY TO THE ART OF SELF-LOVE. For starters, there are numerous articles detailing how to approach self-care for optimal health and wellness. “A Month at The Spa” on page 22 outlines the perfect routine for taking care of your skin, nails and other often neglected areas of the body. On page 26, you’ll find a few recipes for easy, athome beauty treatments, perfect for whenever the mood to pamper yourself strikes. And rounding out the series is a feature on the latest health and beauty craze—activated charcoal. Read more about it on page 46 to figure out if it’s the right ingredient for you. Men who are looking for new ways to look and feel their best this season should flip to “Dress Sharply” on page 38. Bellevue Club member and menswear maven Molly Kuffner talks about her long professional history with men’s apparel and the boutique she recently opened in Capitol Hill. Lastly, if your idea of self-love involves a little indulgence, be sure to read “Washington Wine Splurges” on page 32. Our local wine expert weighs-in on which bottles should make your wine wish list. However you chose to do it, make sure to take some time for yourself this spring.

Patrick Halvorson, Pat Mutzel, Terry Kisner, Darren Trautmann, Will Locke, Austin Porcello Coming into the championship, teams Porcello and Bacon had been displaying offensive fireworks all season. Neither team scored fewer than 85 points in a single game in over two months. A betting man would easily have put this game in the mid-90s to 100s. Like many bets though, that man would have been wrong. This game came down to defense. The opposing squads fought for every basket. Every man was accounted for, and every back-door cut was shut down before it could get started. From the most unlikely of places, the game began to turn with about six minutes to go as Will Locke and Darren Trautmann took their play to another level. Behind Locke’s two stunning blocks and Trautmann’s unadulterated will, Team Porcello finally started to separate from Team Bacon. With a final score of 73–64, Team Porcello became the Fall League Champions.

Eastside news from our partners at 425 Business magazine. EASTSIDE CITY RANKS AMONG TOP 10 SAFEST NATIONWIDE When choosing where to live, people commonly tend to consider factors like housing costs, good schools, and proximity to job centers. However, another factor that often is a priority to many is safety. According to a recent report from New York-based finance technology company SmartAsset, one Eastside city ranks among the safest in the country. Looking at data for the 200 largest cities in the country, the SmartAsset report examined data for crime rates, vehicular mortality rates, drug poisoning rates, excessive drinking, air quality, and the percentage of commuters who drive to work alone. Based on these criteria, SmartAsset ranked Bellevue as the eighth safest city in the country. PHOTO COURTESY OF RACHEL COWARD

Pivotal Commware is making 5G networks possible for cellular carriers, and it’s growing The now Kirkland-based wireless start-up company, Pivotal Commware, is creating technology that will make 5G cellular networks possible, and it recently relocated its headquarters to a larger office. Pivotal Commware was developed within Bellevue’s Intellectual Ventures as part of the Invention Science Fund department that incubates start-ups, pairs them with CEOs, and spins them out as their own companies. Commware grew up in IV’s former Bellevue office, and relocated to an 18,000-square-foot space in Kirkland — nearly double the size of their last space.

A MONTH AT THE SPA Whether you’re a frequent spa guest or the do-it-yourself type, self-care is universally boasted as one of the best ways to stay healthy, happy and fulfilled. The treatments and frequency you choose to get them relies on several factors: age, budget, location and the condition of the treated area. However, with those factors removed, what would the ideal monthly routine be in order to maximize your selfimprovement without going overboard on unnecessary treatments? written

22 | february 2018 reflections

Bellevue Club Spa & Athletic Services Director Katie Wallis explains what to look for in an ideal monthly beauty treatment routine. MANI/PEDI TWICE A MONTH

Your hands are more exposed to the elements than any other part of your body—except maybe your face. Meanwhile, your feet are usually only exposed in the spring and summer, but since they’re consistently in shoes, they grow calluses and lose skin cells frequently. A good service will involve a deep clean, an exfoliation, and lotions to promote healing and hydration of the skin. “Not only will your hands and feet always look great, but having them regularly tended to can reduce stress points and pain in both,” Wallis says. MONTHLY FACIAL

The skin on your face takes in so much dirt, weather and makeup that it needs a monthly deep cleaning—at the very least. Not only does a monthly facial free the skin of toxins, but it will also stimulate the exfoliation process which keeps your face looking more toned and youthful. “Our exfoliation products penetrate the skin to give serums a greater effect,” Wallis says. “Your aesthetician will analyze your skin and its needs to assist you in choosing products right for you that will help beyond your facial.” MONTHLY MASSAGE

Getting regular massages is key in self-care. Studies show monthly massages can help with anxiety, digestive disorders, fibromyalgia, headaches, insomnia, myofascial pain syndrome, soft tissue injuries, sports injuries and many more ailments. “Talk to a massage therapist to determine which type of massage is best for your body and what you’re comfortable with,” Wallis says. Swedish massage, deep tissue and therapeutic massage, hot stone, reflexology and cupping are just a few options The Spa offers to optimize your time on the table. BROWS

There’s no timetable on doing your brows, but a nicely-shaped brow and tint goes a long way in today’s brow-obsessed world. The procedures are fast and leave your face looking a million times more put together.

26 | FEBRUARY 2018 REFLECTIONS

As a self-care enthusiast, there’s nothing I like more than settling in for a night of Netflix while giving a new DIY beauty treatment a test drive. However, not all DIY beauty tricks are created equal. So, to save you some time and energy, I reviewed a few of the most common at-home beauty treatments.

PEPPERMINT AND THYME FOOT SCRUB

1 cup of sugar ¼ cup of almond oil 4 to 5 drops peppermint essential oil ¼ teaspoon dried thyme

Process: In a medium bowl, add the sugar. Drizzle in the almond oil (you can use coconut or avocado oil as well), and mix together. Add the essential oil and the thyme. The final product should be a grainy scrub and does not need to set before use. Verdict: The ingredients were easy to find and most were already in my kitchen. In addition, the process from start to finish took less than five minutes and cleanup was easy. However, the best part was the cooling effect and aroma of the peppermint and thyme. The almond oil added just the perfect hint of sweet and soft to leave your feet feeling royal.

COCONUT OIL AND HONEY HAIR MASK

½ cup honey ½ cup coconut oil ¼ cup apple cider vinegar

Process: In a medium bowl, stir together all three ingredients. Apply to wet or dry hair and then sit for 30 minutes. Wash hair. Verdict: There are many variations out there for this type of hair mask. However, I personally wouldn’t use a recipe with apple cider vinegar again. I couldn’t stand the smell of the apple cider vinegar and decided to rinse it out after just 15 minutes. I also had to shampoo my hair a few times to get the excess oil out. Bottom line, I’m still on the hunt for a perfect hair mask. But if you don’t mind the smell of ACV, the coconut oil does seem to moisturize hair—maybe too well.

SUGAR LIP SCRUB

1 teaspoon brown sugar 1 teaspoon white sugar ½ teaspoon olive oil 1 teaspoon honey Process: In a small bowl, start by combining the brown and white sugar. Then add in the olive oil and honey while stirring. Verdict: The lip scrub was my favorite of all three. It was effective in removing dry skin, revealing fresh layers, and leaving lips feeling smooth, soft and kissable. It was the easiest and best-smelling lip scrub I’ve ever used!

PRIVATE PRACTICE

3

REASONS TO TAKE YOGA OUT OF THE CLASSROOM

Lisa Christian found yoga when she started experiencing low back pain after giving birth to her first daughter. Nervous to jump into a class, she signed up for a private yoga session, where she found a safe space to learn a solid foundation for a lifelong practice. As her pain faded, she became hooked. Now a yoga instructor of more than 17 years, she finds joy in helping others with their practice, and she’s especially enthusiastic about the reward of private sessions. Below she shares three reasons (in no particular order) for taking the time to roll out your mat and enjoy a one-on-one lesson.

1. TO LEARN BASIC POSES, PROPER ALIGNMENT AND MODIFICATIONS. Private sessions are great for beginners who feel intimidated by joining a group class right away. Getting specific instruction for your body and needs can give budding practitioners the confidence to sign up for any class anywhere. “If you learn yoga with improper alignment, you build muscle memory that’s hard to undo,” Christian says. It’s especially crucial for building solid foundations. “The foundation for downward dog is the hands and feet. For dolphin, it’s the forearms. It’s important to build all the poses from the foundation up, so it’s the first place to look for improper alignment.”

2. TAKE YOUR PRACTICE TO A HIGHER LEVEL. Christian says it’s very common for students to feel unsure about how to progress to different levels of yoga—for example, from an intro class to level 2/3. She says private sessions can be great for assisting students with the exact strength-building exercises needed to advance poses like arm balances. “Deep twists can also be challenging because you need to learn how to access more strength in the core, instead of twisting from the shoulders, while still being mindful of the low back,” she says. “It’s a good idea to have assistance when learning them.” 3. INCORPORATE YOGA INTO INJURY RECOVERY OR PREVENTION. Christian works with many high-level athletes who spend large amounts of time training for marathons or Ironman competitions. She believes yoga is great for bringing balance back into the body. For instance, with runners who work their quads a lot, it’s important to focus on the hamstrings, which are the reciprocating muscles, as well as the ligaments and tendons that are supporting the major muscles. “It’s really a bummer if someone has been training all year long and then gets injured. Depending on their body or sport, you can help mitigate the chances,” she says.

For more information or to sign up for a private yoga session, please email fitness@bellevueclub.com.

30 | february 2018 reflections

before you flow If you’ve signed up for a private session, there are a few things to think about before meeting your instructor. Ask yourself: What are my goals? What would I like to get out of a private session? Realistically, how much time do I have to practice each week? Do I like to practice in the morning or evening? What are a few of my most favorite poses and least favorite?

2015 LEONETTI CELLAR RESERVE Walla Walla Valley; $150 Leonetti founder Gary Figgins is widely considered one of the godfathers of the Walla Walla wine industry. Now helmed by his son Chris Figgins, Leonetti wines fetch some of the highest prices for Washington State wines on restaurant lists. Wines are available via mailing list only, with a current wait time of 3-4 years to join (to be added to the wait list, visit leonetticellar.com/join-list). The most recent allotment for mailing list members includes the 2015 Reserve blending three varietals (63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Malbec, 8% Merlot) and three vineyards (Loess, Mill Creek Upland, and Seven Hills Vineyards) and is characterized by an explosive nose of vanilla, lavender, cinnamon graham cracker, and puree of ripe brambles. As it opens up in the glass, notes of cedar and strawberry rhubarb pie are revealed following by a long cherry liqueur finish.

2012 CÔTE BONNEVILLE DUBRUL VINEYARD CABERNET SAUVIGNON Yakima Valley, $200 Hugh and Kathy Shiels planted DuBrul Vineyard in 1992 on a steep, rocky, south-facing slope in the Yakima Valley. In 2001, they founded Côte Bonneville with daughter Kerry as winemaker and earn consistently high scores for the classically styled wines. Kerry has visited many of the world’s great growing regions and believes Washington has the potential to be among the best. She points out that Côte Bonneville wines are often favorably benchmarked with their European counterparts regardless of price. Of the 2012 Cabernet, Kerry says, “Every once in a while, something special happens and the short rows on the very end of the hillside Cabernet block make us say ‘Wow!’” Producing just a single ton of grapes, the DuBrul Vineyard Cabernet packs a powerful, intense and rich punch of flavor including cherry, dried figs, spices, and toasted oak. 2011 BOURDREAX CELLARS RESERVE CABERNET SAUVIGNON Columbia Valley, $125 Though the winery name sounds French, it was actually inspired by an infamous Cajun folklore character known for his sense of humor and love of adventure – not unlike owner and vintner Rob Newsom, a Louisiana-native. Newsom learned the winemaking craft from Walla Walla greats like Gary Figgins of Leonetti Cellar. The 2011 Reserve is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from Champoux Vineyard (75%) and Leonetti Estate Loess Vineyard (25%). The Champoux fruit was aged for 36 months in new Taransaud French oak, while the Loess lot spent 36 months in a 250-gallon Radoux French oak oval. Newsom describes it as a high-toned wine, smoky with toasted pecan, molasses, cassis, dried cherries, and violets. “Once again, this dog will hunt. It’s pretty much the bomb, I mean, if you like big long cabs,” says Newsom pointing out that “the maestro Gary Figgins” took home a case for his personal stash.

BOTTLE TALK

2015 QUILCEDA CREEK CABERNET SAUVIGNON Columbia Valley, $200 Named Best Washington State Winery 2017 by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Quilceda Creek continues its dedication to producing world class Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2015 vintage utilizes grapes from Champoux, Lake Wallula, Palengat, and Wallula Gap vineyards during the state’s warmest recorded growing season in 2015. Grapes were shaded by a leaf canopy during the hottest June days, misted to keep them cool during extreme weather, and achieved full ripeness in October. The berries were small and the flavors concentrated. Winemaker Paul Golitzin calls this vintage “truly majestic with great purity, class and breed.” Tasting notes indicated prodigious blackberry, blueberry, and black cherry fruit along with cocoa powder, roasted herbs, and an earthy quality. Drink now through 2037.

2013 OBELISCO ESTATE ILL NEFER CABERNET SAUVIGNON Red Mountain, $125 Co-founded by Napa-native Doug Long in a post-retirement itch to get back to work, Obelisco bottled its first vintage in 2007. Sourced exclusively from estate fruit grown in Obelisco Vineyard on Red Mountain where densely planted vines yield concentrated juice, the Nefer Cabernet is deep purple to black in the glass with dark black fruit and toasty graham cracker notes. Black cherry and baking spices along with vanilla and cocoa powder follow on the palate. Wellstructured with a big mouth feel, Nefer has a long lingering finish with balanced acid and tannins. → Obelisco.com 2009 COTE BONNEVILLE CARRIAGE HOUSE BORDEAUX BLEND Yakima Valley, $120 The 2009 Bordeaux blend (62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc) is the product of a warm growing season and exhibits ripe cherry, plum, and cassis with dusty cocoa and espresso notes on the palate and a dark chocolate finish. It pairs well with grilled red meats. Give it time to open up before serving. Available in retail, restaurants, and at the winery. → Cotebonneville.com 2015 BETZ FAMILY WINERY HEART OF THE HILL CABERNET SAUVIGNON Red Mountain, $110 Much of the Washington State wine industry had ties to Chateau Ste. Michelle at some point and veteran winemaker Bob Betz clocked 28 years at the company including serving as the Vice President of Winemaking Research. He and his wife Cathy crushed their first vintage of Betz wines in 1997, just a year before Bob earned his Master of Wine degree. The 2015 Heart of the Hill showcases one varietal from one specific site, namely Cabernet Sauvignon from Kiona’s Heart of the Hill Vineyard on Red Mountain. Known for intense heat and sunlight, Red Mountain fruit develops into powerful red wines. This 2015 vintage delivers vivid black currant flavor wrapped in an array of spice notes including wood smoke, cocoa nib, espresso bean, and anise as well as savory tones like hoisin sauce, beef broth, and tea leaf. The palate is rich and weighty. Heart of the Hill will stand up nicely to a long nap in the cellar.

2015 LEONETTI CELLAR CABERNET SAUVIGNON Walla Walla Valley, $100 A blend of five Walla Walla Valley vineyards, this Cabernet dominant (with 12% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc) wine is nearly black in the glass. An intricate bouquet of licorice, lavender, dried herb, black fruits, and cold coffee give way to a massive palate with plush tannins, great acidity, and a polished finish. → Leonetticellar.com 2015 REYNVAAN FAMILY VINEYARDS STONESSENCE SYRAH Walla Walla Valley, $100 Cabernet and Bordeaux blends tend to dominate the high end of Washington State price points, but the Reynvaan family is coaxing some amazing results from the stony vineyards in The Rocks District of Milton Freewater. Nearly all aspects of their farming operation are by hand from planting to picking to sorting the berries at harvest. Reynvaan has dedicated its efforts to Rhône-style red and white varietals and it Syrah has been compared to that of top wines from Cornas with iron-rich umami characteristics. The 2015 Syrah from Stonessence Vineyard was fermented in a combination of 600 liter puncheons and French oak barrels. It offers a dense, Old World palate with notes of dark ripe berries, saddle leather, Asian spices, and an underlying umami core. → Reynvaanfamilyvineyards.com 2014 SPARKMAN CELLARS EVERMORE OLD VINES CABERNET SAUVIGNON Columbia Valley, $100 With accolades from Wine & Spirits (Top 100 Wineries in the World) to a prime spot on the 2016 Wine Spectator Top 100, family-owned Sparkman Cellars is a gem of the Woodinville wine community. Sourced from some of the state’s oldest vines at Dionysus Vineyard a few miles north of the Tri-Cities, this 100% Cabernet weaves earthiness most often associated with Old World wines and pronounced fruit indicative of New World wines. Aromas of cedar, sage, mocha, and black fruits emanate from this garnet-hued wine followed by black cherry and currant with graphite and crushed stone on the palate. → Sparkmancellars.com

40 | february 2018 reflections

Reflections magazine: Have you always been interested in fashion? Molly Kuffner: Yes, I always had a passion for fashion. I started working at Nordstrom when I was in high school. I was a stock girl. Then I studied fashion merchandising and business at Washington State. I loved my major and loved the idea of working in a retail space like Nordstrom. It didn’t occur to me to work anywhere else. I did so all through college. RM: You stayed there for more than 20 years, right? MK: Yes, I started on the sales floor in footwear at the downtown Seattle flagship store. I met a gentleman in the operations division who took me under his wing and taught me everything I needed to know about store operations. So I spent 10 years on the support side of the business, supporting sales and merchandising teams, opening stores, and understanding how to provide great customer service. The other half of my career there was spent in men’s apparel and private label product development. I learned from the best leaders in the company, and I had a really rich experience. RM: How did you jump over to the product merchandising side? MK: I got into products through buying men’s furnishings for the company. A mentor coached me in becoming a product merchandiser in the private label division. That, by far, was one of the most fun, exciting jobs I’ve ever had. Basically it was my job to fill voids in the market. I found out what products were needed and then developed them with a design and production team. RM: Where did the idea for Sharply come from? MK: A college friend came to me a few years ago and asked if I would be interested in exploring the idea of starting a men’s apparel lifestyle brand. Since shopping is not traditionally a priority for men, he asked how we could develop an authentic brand for men who were busy living their lives. We wanted to create an online experience that was easy and fast and provided essential items for every guy.

bellevue club february 2018 | 41

“We like to think of Sharply as a testing ground for new and interesting products. I’m always willing to give a product a try and see how the customers feel about it.” RM: Where did you start? MK: We are all about men’s must-have essentials—T-shirts, a great-fitting premium denim, soft button-down shirt that can go from work into date night—so we started with a privatelabel T-shirt. I called on a friend who is a talented designer out of Los Angeles. She and I developed a super-soft T-shirt collection. We only develop products that are super soft, comfortable and have a great value. Even if a guy can spend $100 on a T-shirt, he probably thinks that’s silly. So we offer an approachable price point. RM: How do you pick the products you use to supplement your private-label items? MK: That’s the easy part. I love the relationships we have with great brands like Grayer’s, Filson, and Randolf Engineering, which makes insanely comfortable sunglasses. We like to think of Sharply as a testing ground for new and interesting products. We’re always willing to try new products and see how the customers feel about it. RM: What can men expect from the Sharply experience? MK: We feel so grateful to be on Capitol Hill, and it was a conscious decision to open a retail store in a place like that where people come for dinner or a cocktail and have experiences with someone they care about. We wanted to offer an experience where they can drop in and have a beer or whiskey while they look around and shop before dinner. They may not even buy something right then and there, but if they like the quality of the products, we know they will come back or find us online. So being a part of the neighborhood and community is huge for us. RM: What’s the biggest mistake you see men make when buying clothes? MK: Men tend to wear shirts that are too big, but it’s actually less flattering. We try to educate every guy and coach him just a little about how to put an outfit together and how to wear clothes that fit well and make them feel confident. RM: What’s your best advice for men who want to feel good but don’t love shopping? MK: To be open and honest about what they want and need. It’s important to know how they live. Where do they spend their time? What’s their lifestyle? Then we can help them build a structure. We can help them understand the key pieces and then how to layer and add in some novelty.

RM: Sharply also has a large online presence. Are men spending a lot of time shopping online? MK: We poured over a lot of data when we started researching the company, and I fell upon a large set of data showing that men are trending toward shopping online. Men’s sales outpaced women’s sales by double digits and are projected to do so for the next several years. We try to learn as much as possible about our customers. That’s a big thing for us—asking questions and listening to the customer, whether online or in the store. RM: What are some lessons you’ve learned about the current retail environment? MK: A lot of the challenges have been with the digital marketing space. It requires a very different kind of retail strategy in order to engage customers, expand our reach and retain them long term. Social media is having a terrific impact on small businesses, and everyone is trying to understand the algorithm more effectively. As we collect all the data, the challenge for us boils down to a few key goals: keep it simple, always listen to the customer and translate the information into products or experiences. Those are my mantras. RM: What’s in store for the future of Sharply? MK: Our goal is to have a store in Seattle and Capitol Hill [the current location] where we can really embrace the community. But the online store is a huge priority for us in the coming year. Because we’re new, we have an opportunity to build trust and provide great value to our customers. Once we do that, and if we grow at a healthy enough pace, we might open more stores. RM: What’s your biggest pet peeve when it comes to the way men dress? MK: To be candid, I really wish men would stop wearing Patagonia and North Face with tailored clothing. They are really great brands; don’t get me wrong. But there’s a time and place for them. RM: Who are your personal style icons? MK: I’m a simple girl. A great pair of jeans and cashmere sweater is my uniform. Pair that with fabulous shoes and some classic accessories, and it goes a long way. As for icons, a lot of my favorite accessories are Chanel, so I’d say Coco Chanel, although I’m pretty sure she never wore denim.

FEATURE: CHARCOAL of activated charcoal

Before you reach for the most recently hyped beauty product, realize it can do both good and harm, depending on where you put it. written

samantha lund

BEAUTY FEATURE

Popularity for activated charcoal toothpastes, soaps and detoxing solutions is at an all-time high. Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen magazines and beauty bloggers rave about the benefits of charcoal and its imperfection-gobbling effects on your skin, teeth and body. Something so popular and well known as a beauty must-have needs to live up to the hype, right? Reality check: How much do you actually know about activated charcoal?

WHAT IS ACTIVATED CHARCOAL?

Activated charcoal is different from regular charcoal. Activated charcoal, or activated carbon, has been heated to high temperature, which changes its internal structure to increase microporosity and its surface area. Those millions of pores trap chemicals and toxins. The charcoal doesn’t actually absorb the toxins, but it works through the process of adsorption, or the chemical reaction wherein elements bind to a surface. In this case, the charcoal’s porous surface binds any foreign elements.

CHARCOAL DRINKS AND PILLS

Activated charcoal/carbon has been used to treat certain drug overdoses and poisonings because it can prevent absorption of potentially toxic agents in the gastrointestinal tract. As early as 1500 B.C. the ancient Egyptians used it to absorb odors and cure intestinal ailments. Today, activated charcoal is used less in emergency rooms; under 5 percent of patients are treated with it annually. Studies by Princeton University and the University of Florida point toward the reason. They found that charcoal cannot differentiate between good and bad foreign substances, so when ingested, it could also remove helpful and healing agents in the body.

bellevue club february 2018 | 47

CHARCOAL AND YOUR TEETH

One of the most recent beauty fads is charcoal toothpaste, which claims amazing teeth-whitening potential. Certain companies argue that charcoal binds to the stains on teeth caused by coffee, wine and plaque and strips them out. While some people swear by the make-your-mouthblack toothpaste, the American Dental Association (ADA) discourages its use. The ADA argues that there’s no evidence at all that activated charcoal does any good for your teeth. In fact, like any abrasive, the potentially erosive effects on the gums and enamel of your teeth aren’t worth the risk. Another concern when putting charcoal into your mouth is the potential for it to enter your lungs, which can cause a potentially fatal lung injury.

CHARCOAL AND YOUR SKIN

There is good news: The oh-so-popular charcoal face masks and soaps are effective and relatively harmless. For external treatments, activated charcoal is effective at treating body odor, acne and discomfort associated with insect bites, poison ivy or snake bites. The impurity-adsorbing effects lock in toxins, dirt and grime on your body and draw them out. It’s effective as an acne treatment, exfoliant or even a daily body soap. Dermatologists recommend treating small acne outbreaks by smoothing one part activated charcoal and two parts aloe vera gel over the area, letting it dry and then rinsing it. The charcoal will bind with the toxins in your skin that contribute to acne.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

When using active charcoal in any beauty regime, it’s important to know the ingredients. Not all charcoal is created equal. Look for activated charcoal made from coconut shells or identified wood species that have ultra-fine grains. In powdered form, many products add artificial sweeteners and chemicals to soaps, masks, toothpaste, pills, juice; avoid these. After all, activated charcoal is used to rid your body of chemicals and toxins. If it’s loaded with them, what’s the point?

WINTER sports Skiing and snowboarding can take a toll on your body but also your hair and skin. Flying down the slopes leaves you vulnerable to high winds, cold air and sun exposure. Consider adding a few new steps to your slope routine: PROTECT YOUR SKIN: “People forget when they’re skiing how high up they get into the atmosphere. The UV rays are even more intense up there and you need high quality sunscreen,” Rubio says. HIDE YOUR HAIR: Speeding down the slopes can leave your hair in a knotted mess. This winter, tackle your tangles by applying your favorite conditioning serum to the bottom half of your hair and tucking it away. Once it’s time to get off the mountain, your hair will have had hours of rejuvenation. MOISTURIZE: Cold and dry air can do serious damage to your skin and lips. Before and after hitting the slopes, be sure to apply lip balm and a moisturizer. “Don’t be afraid to layer,” Rubio says. “You can layer protection and hydration with Eminence sunscreen and Intraceuticals serums to get layers of UV protection, hydration and even anti-aging effects.”

RED EYE CURE: Eye drops are your best friend, period. Contrary to what most people assume, red burning eyes aren’t a symptom of chlorine exposure, but come from the germs found on people (like your cosmetics, dirt and sweat) mixed with the chlorine in the water getting in or around your eyes.

STAY CLEAN: “Chlorine is so damaging,” Rubio says. She recommends instantly washing chlorine off your body, face and hair when you get out of a pool with SkinCeuticals gentle cleanser or Eminence firm skin cleanser to clean, moisturize and balance antioxidants. NAIL IT: Between the chlorine, salt, sand or poolside stucco, your manicure can get beat up when swimming is your go-to activity. LAND workouts With the sun, wind, dirt and other elements you encounter on your runs or rides, your skin and body can take a beating. Remain radiant with a few quick tricks. TWO-A-DAYS: Going for two workouts a day (looking at you, triathletes) can feel great but washing your hair twice can strip the strands. Instead of putting your hair through a harsh shampooing twice, opt for one one wash with shampoo and conditioner and the other with just conditioner. It’ll keep your hair hydrated and still strip some of the sweat out. RICE MILK: “When you don’t have time to take a full shower, rice milk actually cleans off everything from sweat to makeup and even prevents breakouts,” Rubio says. “It cleans, tones, hydrates and tightens all at once.” Keeping a bottle in your gym bag can help you stay fresh and clean on the go. Plus, Eminence rice milk cleanser is all-natural so you don’t have to worry about the chemicals found in most face-cleansing on-the-go towelettes. WATERPROOF MASCARA: For a hint of glam in your run, always wear waterproof mascara that won’t drip down your face and turn you into an extra in a horror movie.

Tips for All Athletes:

1

Exfoliation might actually be the missing link in your dry skin. “Many people don’t exfoliate because they think they’re dehydrated and just need to moisturize,” Rubio says. “Exfoliation actually helps skin stay moisturized.” Lalicious sugar scrubs not only exfoliate your entire body, but the mixture of coconut and jojoba oil— molecularly similar to natural human skin oils—can moisturize and rejuvenate your skin.

2

Pay attention to your lips, Rubio warns. The first sign of dehydration is chapped lips and it’s easily preventable: Drink more water.

When I was in college, I worked abroad in France for a summer. On weekends, I’d go to a local pool and read while basking in the sun. And something miraculous happened: I never burned. French sunscreen just worked better than anything I’d found in the U.S. A little research showed that the ingredients allowed in the formulations differ between countries, and what France permitted certainly agreed with my fair skin. Years later, I’m still a fan of French sunscreen, and there are plenty of other amazing beauty products found internationally. Here’s a handful worth trying.

AUSTRALIA: HAIR STYLING SPRAY

For hair that even a mermaid would envy, Mr. Smith’s Sea Salt Spray delivers beachy waves thanks to three key extract ingredients: sea kelp, bladderwrack and coconut. The salty sea kelp extract soothes and moisturizes, while the antioxidant-rich coconut extract provides an energizing and revitalizing touch. As for the bladderwrack—that’s a type of seaweed—this extract has an innate ability to strengthen hair follicles, creating the thickness and shine that your locks love. The formula is vegan, free of sulfates and parabens, and offers UV protection. → For more information, visit mr-smith.com.au.

JAPAN: EXFOLIATOR

Squeaky clean skin that’s smooth and supple is a universal desire—leave it to Japan to quench our (skin’s) thirst with Cure’s Natural Aqua Gel. The water-based exfoliator uses rosemary, aloe vera and other ingredients (but not preservatives, fragrance, artificial coloring or alcohol) to lift dead skin cells away. It’s not a big commitment, either, as it’s designed to be used for 30 to 60 seconds twice a week. Plus, the process of massaging in the gel and seeing clumps form is satisfying—and the baby-soft results aren’t so bad either. → For more information, visit cureaquagel.com.

MEXICO: MASCARA

For long, lustrous lashes, look no further than IM Cosmetics’ Mascara para Pestañas con Aceite de Mamey. The not-so-secret ingredient is mamey seed oil, which goes a step beyond just defining lashes by helping them to lengthen and strengthen. Light, clump-free, and waterproof, it’s easy to wear and inexpensive, particularly when you purchase it in Mexico. → For more information, visit cosmetobellezaim.com.

NAMIBIA: LIP BALM

Using ingredients indigenous to Namibia, a country in southern Africa, Desert Secrets creates products with components you might not be familiar with—but that you’ll definitely want to know about. One such ingredient in the Lip Balm is marula oil from the marula tree, which has been used for generations for its moisturizing properties. From a plant that’s an ancestor of the watermelon comes tsamma melon seed oil, which offers protection from the harsh African sun. And for the scent, the lip balm features the perfume of the Himba women, Namib myrrh, which has an earthy essence. The packaging lives up to its product inside, with a carved Makalani nut serving as a pretty container. → For more information, visit desert-secrets.com.

CANADA: BAR SOAP

When crafting their luxurious bar soaps, Rocky Mountain Soap Co. wanted to throw it back—way back. The Canmore-based company creates their soaps the same way it was done centuries ago, with ingredients you can recognize, like coconut oil, olive oil, mashed fruits, herbs, and essential oils. It’s a time-consuming process—it takes an entire day to make just one batch of soap, and then it must be cured for eight weeks—but the results are worth it. There are tons of scents available, from Fennel & Charcoal for acne-prone skin to Avocado for moisturizing the face to the Peppermint Shave Bar, which reduces nicks and razor burn. → For more information, visit rockymountainsoap.com. 58 | FEBRUARY 2018 REFLECTIONS

SLOVENIA: ANTI-AGING SERUM

While the fountain of youth remains elusive, cosmetics companies work to develop their own anti-aging potion in a bottle. One of the latest entries in this market is from Medex in Slovenia, which produces Beesecret Serum. Slovenia has a love affair with beekeeping—consider that in a country of 2 million, 90,000 are beekeepers—so it makes sense that they would find a way to use far more than just the honey. With the help of bee venom, the product is designed to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, stimulating the production of elastin and collagen while nourishing multiple layers of skin. The ancient Greeks and Egyptians used bee venom, and now you can see (and feel!) what it’s all about, too. → For more information, visit beesecret.net/en.

SOUTH KOREA: FACE MASK

When looking for the next big thing in the beauty industry, many eyes turn to South Korea, where skin care is taken super seriously. Get in on the innovation with the Rubber Masks from Dr. Jart. These two-step masks may look like something that nightmares are made of, but they’re actually a dream that can handle dryness, dullness, dark spots, uneven skin, acne, and other common issues. Just rub the serum on your skin, carefully place the two-piece rubber mask on your face, wait for the mask to do its magic, and take it off and massage in the remaining serum. The masks come in four flavors: Bright Lover, Clear Skin Lover, Firm Lover, and Hydration Lover. → For more information, visit us.drjart.com.

SWEDEN: SALT SCRUB

The Saltskrubbs from L:A Bruket are beloved for their ability to make you feel like you’ve been transported to a spa, right from the comfort of your own bathroom. Based on Sweden’s west coast, the company takes its inspiration from the rituals developed to soothe skin from days spent surfing, sailing and sunbathing. With the organic sea salt scrubs, you’ll get exfoliation and moisturization, with essential oils that each have their own benefit. Scents include sage/rosemary/lavender, coriander/black pepper, wild rose, and marjoram/eucalyptus. → For more information, visit shop.labruket.se.
