e d i t o r
This issue is all about the crossection of wellness, self-care and indulgence. For example, turn to page 50 and read the fascinating story of Buki clothing. They are a local design house that invented and perfected collagen clothing. It’s a revolutionary product that combines the health benefits of collagen (mainly more radiant skin) with some of the softest materials you have ever felt. Add in styles that are timeless, classic and chic, and you will see why the company made such an impression on us. If you aren’t in the spending mood but still want to add some luxury to your life, turn to page 32 and find out why seaweed is the latest beauty trend to take the spotlight. In the feature, there are practical tips on how to harvest, eat or soak in the miracle plant and how it can boost your wellness. Lastly, please check out the member profile of Richard Eastern on page 44. He and his wife recently opened Lash Lounge, and says he did so with the hopes of empowering local women to feel and look their best every day. He proves that living well is a beautiful thing.

A SMARTER WAY TO FARM
Pollen Systems, a Bellevue-based startup launched last August, provides farmers with the data they need to save money, improve sustainable practices, and better know their crops Growing any kind of large-scale crop can be a difficult art to master. Success in doing so requires farmers to understand growth rate, water needs, how many employees to hire, and how to best deal with diseases and pests—all complicated factors in constant fluctuation. To help farmers exact this art, Keith McCall founded Bellevue-based Pollen Systems to incorporate science and technology into a process that historically has lacked both.
FEELING THE SQUEEZE
Downtown Bellevue commercial real estate forecast for 2019 With the years-long, red hot residential real estate market finally cooling off a bit in the Puget Sound region, it makes sense to wonder if any changes are on the horizon for the Eastside’s commercial real estate market. At first glance, the loosening vacancy rate for Class A office space in Bellevue’s central business district — from 5.2 percent to 7.9 percent, according to third-quarter data found in Colliers International’s Bellevue Skyline Review — might give you reason to celebrate. But Paul Sweeney, principal and cofounder of the Broderick Group, said these numbers can be misleading.
pacific northwest’s first mclaren dealership planned for bellevue
Eastside luxury car enthusiasts will soon have a local spot at which to test drive and shop for McLaren, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Rolls-Royce vehicles. OpenRoad Auto Group, which has acquired all four car brands, recently announced its plans to open the Pacific Northwest’s first McLaren dealership in Bellevue.

DEAR BELLEVUE CLUB MEMBERS, On behalf of Bellevue Club and Bellevue LifeSpring, we want to share our heartfelt appreciation for your generous support of our 2018 Adopt-A-Family program. Our 2018 Holiday Adopt-A-Family program was filled with so much joy because of you! Together you showed true compassion and commitment by donating gifts and groceries to four families in need this year and we were able to fulfill all of the wishes for these families. During distribution the families expressed heartfelt gratitude and they were truly overwhelmed by your kindness. Each and every family left with a new-found sense of hope knowing that this year there would be food on the table, presents under the tree, and that people in this community care about them. The Bellevue Club chose to work with Bellevue LifeSpring because of their work in promoting stability and independence through a variety of services such as: summer school and college scholarships, emergency assistance, and basic needs assistance. TIME TO TONE bellevue club personal trainer juliana di loreto shares her favorite circuit for overall toning and weight management. her tool of choice is the bosu ball, and she breaks down how it can improve balance, flexibility and strength. she recommends three rounds of 15 for each exercise.
BARBELL SQUATS
Using an appropriate weight for you, rest a barbell on your shoulders. Stand on the BOSU ball with your feet shoulder-width apart while maintaining a good spinal position (chest up and head looking forward). Lower into a squat, keeping the knees aligned with your feet and hips. Squat as deeply as your flexibility allows, but don’t let your knees cave or your thoracic spine flex. Return to standing position.

WHAT IS CONTRAST THERAPY? written
by
lauren hunsberger
THE CONCEPT IS SIMPLE: HOT WATER OPENS YOUR BLOOD VESSELS AND COLD WATER CONSTRICTS THEM. THE EFFECT THAT OCCURS WHEN YOU PURPOSEFULLY MOVE FROM ONE TEMPERATURE TO THE NEXT IS CALLED CONTRAST THERAPY, AND IT PROMOTES BETTER CIRCULATION AND HEALING, NOT TO MENTION INCREASED ELASTICITY IN THE MUSCULATURE OF THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM. For decades, this concept has been used on injuries (alternating the ice pack for the heat pack), but it actually does wonders when applied to the whole body. From beginner to expert, we offer the following ways to practice this technique.

SEAWEED SEASON written
by
lauren hunsberger
Long revered in Japanese culture for its health-giving properties, seaweed is enjoying a moment in the spotlight, appearing in spas and restaurants in new and inventive ways. Western Washingtonians are especially lucky as our waters are brimming with different varieties, which adventurous spirits can pick and prepare for themselves. For those who don’t want to work for it, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the marine vegetable that is packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
32 | february 2019 reflections
HARVEST IT
Our local waters are home to vast forests of seaweed, but the most popular, useful and palatable are winged kelp (Alaria), sugar kelp (Saccharina) and bull kelp (Nereocystis). In only a few short steps, anyone can harvest the plants and reap the health benefits. • Get a license from a Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife office, or call (360) 902-2464. • Avoid contaminated waters to make sure the seaweed you harvest is safe for consumption. Check beach and water advisories at doh.wa.gov/shellfishsafety.htm. • Harvest only your share. The daily limit in Washington is 10 pounds of wet seaweed per day. Violations will result in fines, and you are responsible for bringing your own scale. • Dry or cook your kelp, but don’t sell it— that’s against the law.
bellevue club february 2019 | 33
EAT IT
One of the most healthful properties of seaweed is its high level of iodine. Iodine is an important compound that can only be found in plants from the sea and is known for regulating thyroid function. Protein, fiber, calcium, iron and vitamin K round out seaweed’s nutritional profile. There are many ways to incorporate fresh seaweed into your diet, but below we offer a few simple ways to dive in, if you’ve never cooked with seaweed before.
Simple Miso Soup 4 cups of water ¼ cup shredded seaweed 3 tablespoons white miso paste 1/3 cup chopped green onion 1/3 cup cubed firm tofu Bring water to a boil in a saucepot. Add the seaweed, and simmer for five minutes, longer for tougher varietals. In a small bowl, add a few teaspoons of warm water to the miso paste to prevent clumping. Add the miso paste, green onion and tofu. Let simmer another five to seven minutes, and then season with salt or soy sauce to taste.
Sautéed Seaweed 2 tablespoons sesame oil ¼ cup sliced mushrooms (optional) ¼ cup sliced onions 1 cup of sliced seaweed Splash of soy sauce (or tamari for a gluten-free option) In a frying pan, heat one tablespoon of oil on medium-high heat. Add the mushrooms and cook until golden brown. Set mushrooms aside. Add second tablespoon of oil. Once hot, add the onions. When slightly golden, add the seaweed and cook until tender. Add the mushrooms back into the pan, and season with soy sauce or tamari.

SOAK IN IT
Seaweed is as good for the skin as it is for the inside of your body. We asked Kim Chisholm, seaweed expert at Seaweed Bath Co., why we should all be turning our bathtubs into relaxing seawater escapes. Their products, ranging from shampoos to sea salts, can be found at select local Whole Foods, as well as online at seaweedbathco.com. Reflections magazine: Why is seaweed so good for the body? Kim Chisholm: Seaweed is high in vitamins and minerals that are amazing for your skin. Think of it as a superfood for your skin. RM: Why is a bath an effective way to absorb minerals from seaweed? KC: A seaweed bath can give your body the same feeling as a dip in the ocean. Bladder wrack seaweed, for example, releases a mineral gel in your bath that helps rejuvenate and condition your skin and hair. It’s also high in iodine (detoxifying), rich in fucoidin (a powerful anti-inflammatory) and has amino acids that help increase hydration and skin appearance.

At the turn of the century, as life got faster and busier while technology took over the world of man-scaping, men put down their singleedge straight razors and picked up faster ways to shave. As they tossed out their grandpa’s favorite razor, the art of shaving, along with men’s faces, suffered. Not only does the straight razor give you the closest shave possible, but the benefits go far beyond the face. Yes, the straight razor is intimidating, but the benefits might just inspire you to give it a try. LESS IRRITATION
Using a single blade will cut down on the amount of irritation you feel after a shave. Essentially, each blade that passes over your skin is likely to pull and chafe, so with a regular razor, it’s as if you’re going over each spot three or four times. With a single straight razor, you will experience three or four times less irritation.
bellevue club february 2019 | 39
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
This benefit speaks for itself. A good straight-edge razor will last you a lifetime, and is worth the investment. Just think of all the razors, blades and handles you throw away each year. Think about the plastic and cardboard packaging they all come in, not to mention all the cans of shaving cream you’re throwing away as well. With a straight razor, you can eliminate all of that waste from your carbon footprint. MEDITATIVE
Straight-razor shaving, like many rituals, has meditative benefits. It’s a morning routine that takes time and makes you slow down to focus on one task. After a few successful and focused shaves, you might just find it calms and relaxes you before a hectic day.
40 | february 2019 reflections
You can get a clean shave if you have soft, smooth skin, or even if you have rough skin and a thick beard. A straight razor shave is the answer to all skin types. Once you’re ready to take your shaving experience to the next level, picking the right razor is the most important part. A straight razor isn’t hazardous to use, but choosing one can be daunting. Here’s what the experts suggest: Check the steel’s quality.
A good-quality razor will sharpen better than poor quality steel. One way to check if you have a well-tempered blade is to use the tip of your thumbnail and slide it across the blade. If it lets off a ringing sound, it’s well tempered. Consider the blade’s width.
To begin, look for a 5/8 size, this is what most barbers use because it is small enough to control and easily contours your face. Pick a rounded blade point.
The end of each blade can be set to a point or rounded. The pointed blades can easily cut or nick a new user, so start with a rounded blade. Once you learn the technique, switch to a pointed blade if you like the look. Finally, be sure to get a “shave-ready blade.”
That means it’s already been professionally honed and is ready for use.

Brush: A small brush with a handle parallel to the bristles used to apply shaving cream or soap to the face. 4. Shaving cream: Shaving cream keeps moisture in the beard hairs while shaving, leaving them softer and easier to cut as well as creating a thin layer of protection between the blade and your skin. 5. Lather bowl: Used when applying shaving cream to your brush. 6. After-shave balm: Whereas traditional aftershave can irritate the skin, balms provide a thick layer of moisture to the skin which protects and sooths it right after a shave.

Once you’ve got your razor and you’ve done some research about shaving creams and other tools, the best way to learn is to watch a pro. Go to your local barber with your tools and ask for a demo. Avoid the frustration of watching a how-to video and trying to mimic it, and get some hands-on experience.

Richard Eastern went into the lash extension business for three reasons—there was an established business model, the product is practical and saves women time and, most importantly, it’s empowering. 44 | february 2019 reflections
people & pl ace s
“I was really excited about the empowerment of women,” Eastern says. “I really like that it makes women feel good about themselves, internally and externally. That piece really hit me.” A Bellevue native and University of Washington alumnus, Eastern spent the first two decades of his professional life as an entrepreneur and real estate broker. Roughly a year ago, he met with a franchise broker to look at options for building a new business. “I like that franchises are a way to have a business without reinventing the wheel,” he says. “I always felt like it’s my personality and ingenuity to take something and edit it rather than start from scratch.” Now, he and his wife, Stacey, have two salons, with five beds in each. Their main objective is to give Bellevue and Redmond communities a high-end option for lashes, brows, permanent
makeup and threading. Eastern has enjoyed the positive response so far. “There was one woman who said she only had the time and money to go to a therapist or get her lashes done, and she chose the lashes,” he says. “She was joking, but it does provide a valuable service. It gets women excited about themselves and ready to tackle the world.” Eastern thinks they might open a third salon in the next few years, but he says that would be the cap. “My dad was a pharmacist in Seattle for 50 years, and he had three locations. He always emphasized not biting off more than you can chew. He knew every customer and client and made sure the interaction was valued. I learned that from him,” Eastern says.

LOSE THESE LASH MYTHS* MYTH 1: HAVING LASH EXTENSIONS APPLIED COULD HURT OR FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE.
Truth: The process of having lash extensions applied does not hurt and should never cause discomfort if they are being applied by a trained lash stylist. Actually, the lash extension application process is a very relaxing experience and many clients enjoy a nap. MYTH 2: EYELASH EXTENSIONS COULD DAMAGE MY NATURAL LASHES.
Truth: When you combine premium products and trained lash stylists with proper application techniques, then your natural lashes should never be damaged. During the lash application process, it’s imperative to the health of your lashes to have each natural hair isolated when an extension is adhered to it and ensure proper separation so that the hairs can continue to grow and shed as they would naturally. MYTH 3: MY NATURAL LASHES WILL BE SHORTER IF/ WHEN I DECIDE TO HAVE MY EXTENSIONS REMOVED.
Truth: When eyelash extensions are applied by a trained lash stylist, your natural lashes are allowed to grow as usual. Women without lash extensions usually apply and remove mascara every day. The application and slight pulling of lashes when applying mascara followed by the cleaning and rubbing of your eyes to remove the mascara can greatly damage your lashes. With a proper lash extension application, there will be no damage and your lashes should grow better than they would if you were applying, wearing and cleaning off mascara day to day.
MYTH 4: EYELASH EXTENSIONS ARE ONE-SIZE-FITSALL, AND MY LASHES WILL LOOK JUST LIKE MY FRIEND’S LASHES AFTER SHE GOT HER LASH EXTENSIONS.
Truth: All of us have different eye shapes and a different number of natural lashes. What does this mean? It means that lash extensions can be (and should be) customized just for you. It also means that your lash extensions may not look just like your friend’s lash extensions since you each have a different eye shape and number of natural lashes. *According to thelashlounge.com.
bellevue club february 2019 | 47
FACTS ABOUT LASH SHEDDING* 1. On average, a person can lose up to 20 percent of their natural eyelashes every two weeks. 2. Natural eyelashes grow in and fall out in cycles, which occur every 60 to 90 days. 3. All hairs, including eyelashes, replace themselves every few years. 4. Depending on their individual growth cycles, a person can typically shed between one and five natural eyelashes every day. 5. When a natural eyelash matures and falls out, a new lash has already been growing and quickly replaces the lost eyelash. For many of us, this process is not noticed. 6. When eyelashes are extended with quality extensions (like we use here at The Lash Lounge), it will be more noticeable when these lashes shed because they are longer and darker than your natural lashes. *According to thelashlounge.com.

S E A T T L E is known for finding everyday uses for technology innovation. The city’s newest clothing line combines collagen and fiber technology to create the “Wardrobe Revolution.” Buki merges skin care with your everyday clothing. Co-founder and designer Joey Rodolfo (known for designs with Tommy Bahama) was inspired by Japanese fiber technology and, after 15 years of learning, testing and designing, created the first collagen-infused clothing line, the Collagen Collection by Buki.

COLLAGEN TURTLENECK, $168
Collagen is known for its health benefits, including promoting skin elasticity, supporting bones and muscles, protecting your organs and providing structure to joints and tendons. While your body produces collagen on a regular basis, that production slows down with age, which has collagen-conscious consumers looking for new ways to incorporate it into their lives. Buki is the Japanese word for “defend and protect,” which is in reference to what Buki pieces provide the wearer. Each garment is designed to protect and comfort you from the elements, with thermoregulation to cooling properties.
“Buki provides luxury comfort in fabrics that no one else in the world has,” co-founder Stacy Bennett says. “We call it our Wardrobe Revolution.” Collagen peptides soften, hydrate and protect skin with UPF 50+ (an ultraviolet protection factor that measures how effectively fabric blocks ultraviolet radiation; a 50+ rating means it protects 1/50th of the sun’s UV rays). Smoking, sun exposure, age and an unhealthy diet are determining factors in the amount of natural collagen your body will produce; with less natural collagen, skin begins to wrinkle and visibly sag.
The Collagen Collection sources collagen peptides from marine sources. This makes each piece higher quality than porcine or bovine collagen could create. Sourcing collagen from marine life also makes the line nonirritating and hypoallergenic.

W H AT A R E T H E B E N E F I TS O F C O L L AG E N ? Your body’s tissues are mostly made of the extracellular matrix (ECM), a diverse mesh of proteins and sugars, which act as the mortar binding your cells together. Collagen is one of many proteins that make up the ECM and comprises roughly 30 percent of the protein mass in humans. The term “collagen” comes from the Greek kólla, which means glue, alluding to the effects it has on our bodies:
ALLEVIATES JOINT PAIN
A study of 147 athletes with joint pain found that doses of collagen hydrolysate (a substance produced by hydrolysis) for 24 weeks significantly reduced their pain. PROMOTES SKIN HEALTH AND ELASTICITY
One of the most well-known benefits of collagen is its ability to reverse signs of aging. This essential protein promotes skin elasticity and reduces wrinkles. INCREASES HAIR GROWTH
A 180-day study of 15 women with thinning hair proved that a collagen supplement resulted in improvements in hair volume, scalp coverage and thickness. Skin moisture and smoothness also improved. ON HIM: IN-FLIGHT BLAZER, $298 ON HER: EMMA PANT $148, NEO-TECH JACKET, $198
“The debut collection was designed as layering tees so the skin receives the softening and hydrating benefits,” Bennett explains. “My favorite piece is our Collagen V-Neck. It is from our debut collection of essential styles, and it is a great, classic style with the revolutionary components.” Each piece in the Collagen Collection is designed to be protective and sustainable while offering moisturizing, deodorizing and UV-protective benefits. Each piece is eco-friendly, sustainably made, wrinkle-resistant and machine-washable.

IMPROVES BLOOD SUGAR REGULATION
Fifty individuals who took collagen supplements for three months had lower blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and creatinine levels when compared to the average levels between meals. HELPS BUILD MUSCLE AND BURN FAT
Collagen is a major component of muscle tissue, which means it is an essential factor in building muscle mass. Collagen also contains creatinine, which is fuel for muscles. A 2015 study found that collagen supplements taken by older males can increase fat loss and muscle strength when partnered with resistance training compared to a placebo group.

“We have our sights set on continuing to empower people with our Wardrobe Revolution of deskto-dinner comfort,” Bennett says. “We believe that comfort is luxurious, and you deserve to be supremely comfortable.” Buki’s collection includes clothing, a scarf, a pillow cover and an eye mask so you can promote softer, more hydrated skin from morning until night. This year, the brand will launch their first menswear collection. You can explore the Buki collection of apparel and accessories online at bukibrand.com or at the Buki flagship store in downtown Seattle.

HOT SPRING HEAVEN 58 | february 2019 reflections

people & pl ace s
The Pacific Northwest landscape is punctuated with hundreds of natural pools that promise healing heat, minerals and spectacular views. Some are situated in remote and rustic environments that require a hike. Others were acquired and turned into world-class resorts. From secluded to luxurious, here’s what Washington has to offer.
01
GAMMA HOT SPRINGS
Situated deep in the Glacier Peak Wilderness area, Gamma Hot Springs is a mystical place for the most adventurous. You are almost guaranteed to have them to yourselves, but it will take quite a bit of experience in hiking and route finding to get there. It’s an estimated 32-mile round trip, but the terrain is some of the most beautiful in the Pacific Northwest. See trails.com/us/wa/darrington/gamma-hot-springs for more information.
02
GOLDMYER HOT SPRINGS
Goldmyer Hot Springs is located just 25 miles east of North Bend in the oldgrowth forests of the Cascade foothills. Visitors are tasked with a 4.5-mile hike to the site, which resides at the base of an old mine shaft, and you are responsible for packing out everything you bring in. There are multiple natural pools, from 125 degrees F to cool soaks. Chock-full of minerals, they promote healing in return for the hike. Only 20 visitors are allowed to stay each day, so be sure to check in with goldmyer.org before you go.

03
OLYMPIC HOT SPRINGS
With an accessible five-mile round trip, the Olympic Hot Springs is one of the most frequented springs on the peninsula. There are many different pools along the trail, and they vary in temperature, so there’s something for everyone. Find the one that suits you best and enjoy. This area is prone to washout, so be sure to check wta.org/go-hiking/ hikes/olympic-hot-springs before you go.

SOL DUC HOT SPRINGS RESORT IN OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK
The Olympic Peninsula’s other hot springs option is Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort. With cabin and campsite options, this resort offers a little more comfort for the springs experience. On-site, there are three mineral hot springs and one cool pool. Nearby restaurants and other amenities make this a perfect family-friendly spot. For more information, visit olympicnationalparks.com/ lodging/sol-duc-hot-springs-resort.
05
SCENIC HOT SPRINGS
The Scenic Hot Springs were just recently opened to the public, and guests still must apply online to visit. The springs offer expansive views of the mountains near Stevens Pass, but because they are located on private land, there is no camping or overnight access. Also, guests should be aware that these springs are nudity-friendly. For more information or to apply, visit scenichotsprings. blogspot.com.
06
CARSON HOT SPRINGS RESORT
If you like your hot springs with a side of golf and a massage at a full-service spa, Carson Hot Springs is the perfect place. Located near the Columbia River Gorge, guests also have access to world-class hiking, fishing and horseback riding. The site was discovered in 1876, so history buffs will especially enjoy kicking back and relaxing. For more information, please visit carsonhotspringresort.com.

Eastside Market Review* Greater Eastside We are decelerating, transitioning into a balanced market, transitioning from a 5-year seller’s market to a more balanced one. There are several contributing factors to this sudden shift. Inventory levels have been at their highest since 2008 and 2009. From January to June, last year’s peak, the number of homes for sale shot up 214%.
