here’s nothing more influential than someone who walks the walk — no matter where that path leads. Heather Dahl, a certified laser technician and licensed master aesthetician at Strother Dermatology in Kirkland, is her own testimonial. “My natural hair color is almost black, and I used to have to shave twice per day because I had so much thick body hair. And I inherited my grandmother’s beard by the time I was 20. Laser hair removal was a life-changer, for sure.” Changing lives for the better is what makes Dahl’s career fulfilling — she knows firsthand how it feels on the inside when you look your best on the outside. In a word — it’s transformative.

Lauren Hunsberger | 425.688.3162 art director

Just ask Bellevue Club member and medical director of Pinnacle Dermatology, Dr. DeEtta Gray. She says the skin is a window into what’s going on inside your body and advises people to spend more time deciphering what it’s saying. Certain skin conditions can be red flags, signaling high levels of inflammation or imbalances. I had some burning questions for her in regard to the rise of skin cancer, eczema, psoriasis, acne and other skin disorders. Read her answers on page 36. Similarly, writer Samantha Lund dug deep into the research surrounding the everyday chemicals and compounds we, often unknowingly, absorb through our skin, hair and nails. Did you know there are numerous names for things like formaldehyde that hide in your beauty products? Turn to page 48 for a short checklist of things to leave on the shelf. On a more glowing note, our own spa director, Katie Wallis, shared her daily and nightly routines for skin care. With more than a decade of experience testing products, she’s a trustworthy source for what works. Turn to page 28 and get ready to take notes!

Applications for leave can now be filed with the Employment Security Department, with benefits payable from Jan. 1, 2020. “For the first time in this state, millions of workers will have access to paid leave when they need it most,” stated the Employment Security Department Commissioner Suzi LeVine.

OSSIA ANNOUNCES NEW COTA DESIGN Ossia — the Bellevue-based company behind Cota® Real Wireless Power™ — announced the newest addition to its family of wireless charging designs: Cota HOME. 16 | february 2020 reflections

Self-care means focusing on your physical and mental needs and health. Focusing on self-care can improve your mental health by improving self-esteem, depression and anxiety, and it can improve your physical health by improving your ability to relax when chronic stress threatens your body with fatigue, exhaustion and illness. Studies also show that self-care can make you a better care taker as well, think of it like when you’re in an airplane and the flight attendant explains the need for adults to put on their air masks first – life is like an airplane ride, put your mask on first. Next time you’re feeling a bit run down or need a moment to yourself, grab one of these books, listen to music, hop in a bath and explore the world of self-care.

LAVENDER Try this popular scent in your home in new and interesting ways.

he a lt h ben ef i t s

be yon d t he st em Lavender can be purchased and found in many different forms. Here are just a few: LAVENDER PLANT

A perennial that gives off a sweet aroma. It grows outdoors in Washington, so keep an eye out the next time you’re walking through your neighborhood LAVENDER OIL

Lavender is much more than just a scent added to candles or bath salts. Today, it’s considered a staple in calming and wellness routines. It’s also commonly used in therapeutic remedies to improve mood and other physical ailments. As for most herbs, the benefits aren’t consistent for everyone, but next time you’re looking to try something new, give lavender a try. Throughout the ages it has been known to • Improve sleep • Decrease stress levels • Treat blemishes, eczema and inflammation • Remedy pain naturally • Reduce blood pressure and heart rate • Relieve symptoms of menopause • Combat fungus growth • Stimulate hair growth

m a k e i t ton igh t: l av en der oil

Created by extracting the liquid or “nectar” from the flower; commonly used as massage oil or as a scent in a diffuser or on fabrics. LAVENDER TEA

Offers many benefits such as promoting calmness and relaxation. According to Healthline, lavender tea can help ease nausea, vomiting and intestinal gas. LAVENDER SUPPLEMENTS

Used to combat anxiety and depression as well as intestinal issues. Some people add lavender to their diet to combat hair loss or pain.

what you didn’t know Lavender is part of the mint family. It repels mosquitoes and moths.

DIRECTIONS

1. Cut the stems and flowers of your lavender in six inch segments. For a stronger scent, aim for more flowers than stems and leaves. 2. Let the lavender dry. 3. Crush the lavender and place it into a jar – be sure to use a clean and dry jar so you don’t contaminate the mixture with other odors or water. 4. Pour non-scented oil into the jar, completely covering the lavender inside but also leaving 1-2 inches of space at the top to allow for expansion (Almond oil, olive oil and sunflower oil are commonly used). 5. Cover the jar tightly and let sit for 48 hours in a sunny location. 6. Strain the mixture with muslin or a cheesecloth over a bowl, discarding the lavender pieces and keeping the oils. 7. Repeat the process with the same oil to invoke a stronger smell. 8. Store your mixture in a dark bottle.

18 | february 2020 reflections

Using lavender to ease insomnia and back pain dates back to the ancient Greeks. Lavender was also used during the bubonic plague in the 17th century to cleanse the air and bodies from disease. Nectar from lavender is used to make honey. Lavender comes in more than just the well-known purple hue; varieties include blue, pink or yellow.

THE SECRET OF HOT STONES

REFLECTIONS MAGAZINE: WHAT TYPE OF STONES DO YOU USE DURING A HOT STONE TREATMENT? MEGAN SMETHURST: The stones we use are made of basalt, which is a type of volcanic rock. RM: WHY ARE BASALT STONES OPTIMAL FOR MASSAGE?

Learn about the benefits of adding some heat to your next massage. Megan Smethurst, lead massage therapist at The Spa, talks with us about what makes these rocks so magical.

MS: Basalt stones retain and conduct heat when they are applied to the body, so massage therapists use them as tools to soften and manipulate tight, sore muscles. RM: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HOT STONE MASSAGE? MS: The heat creates a melting sensation in your tissue, allowing the work to penetrate chronic tension quickly and very comfortably. Our nervous system also responds to heat by enabling a deeply relaxed state, letting go of stress and allowing your therapist to alleviate pain without causing further sensitivity. RM: IS THERE ANYONE WHO SHOULDN’T GET A HOT STONE TREATMENT? MS: Anyone with heart disease, skin conditions, cancer or a recent surgery should avoid hot stones in massage. With a hot stone treatment we are boosting circulation and drawing heat through the whole system, and that can be problematic for people with these health concerns. Also, if you prefer cool to tepid baths, this hot treatment is probably not for you. RM: ANY OTHER BITS OF INFORMATION ABOUT HOT STONE MASSAGE? MS: This is a great treatment for anyone who is tired, cold or sore! It brings an element of relaxation that regular massage does not, and some people find the heat releases tension that seemed stuck in their muscles. It’s also a wonderfully warm way to combat the raw chill in the air this time of year!

WELLNESS

HOW TO

ASMR One of the more controversial topics in the wellness world are Autonomous Sensory Meridian Responses (ASMRs). According to the US Library of Medicine and National Institute of Health, the term “describes the experience of tingling sensations in the crown of the head, in response to a range of audio-visual triggers such as whispering, tapping, and hand movements.” Everyone has different “triggers” for this sensation, but ASMR overall is understood to be a good and wanted feeling. Some scientists and psychologists have pieced together specific ASMR “triggers” to assist people dealing with different issues like sleeplessness, anxiety or depression. Want to know if you have an ASMR trigger? Try these to start:

22 | february 2020 reflections

sou n ds WHISPERING AND BLOWING: These are two of the most common triggers and they can result in the feeling of calmness and relaxation, according to a study published in PLOS ONE, a journal for research. These sounds are proven to help people with sleep issues. REPETITIVE NOISES: Sounds like tapping, page turning, a ticking clock or typing are very formal and consistent and can soothe anxiety symptoms and bring a calming sensation. HUMMING AND PURRING: The sounds of a motor humming or cat purring are both proven to calm some while at the same time can have the opposite effect and annoy others.

touch EAR BRUSHING: This sensation is all about having something soft brush against your ear – like a feather or a makeup brush. This “trigger” stimulates in both a physical sensation as well as auditory one to help calm and soothe. HAIR BRUSHING: Before ASMR was a notable resource for anxiety or sleep issues, hair brushing’s calming effect was well-known, and now it simply has a label. Hair brushing can be a great resource for people who are tense or anxious.

v i sua l LIGHT PATTERNS: Remember those starry night lights you had as a child? Turns out, they actually did aid in sleep. Research shows that light ASMR have the opposite effect from most light sources and can actually get you to sleep faster. TRACING: Tracing patterns is a very strong form of visual ASMR. The repetitive motion much like the repetitive noise of a clock ticking is proven to aid with anxiety symptoms due to its predictable pattern.

Bellevue Club personal trainer Becca Kawaoka is an endurance athlete and coach who has participated in numerous Ironman competitions and other athletic endeavors that ask a lot of the body. To stay in top form, no matter what the racecourse presents, she recommends the following conditioning and mobility drills. These four exercises are meant to strengthen the core and legs while providing mobility and stability.

01

/04

OVERHEAD SQUAT Pick a weighted bar that is appropriate for your fitness level. Stand with the legs slightly wider than your hips. Hold the bar overhead and mindfully drop into a deep squat. Return to standing. Repeat 10 to 12 times. Benefits include leg and hip strength and mobility, plus core and shoulder stability.

02

/04

DEADBUG Begin flat on your back with your arms and legs raised toward the ceiling. Keeping the low back on the floor, lower one leg and one arm to just above the floor. Raise back to the starting position, and perform the action on the other leg and arm. Repeat on each side 10 to 12 times. Benefits include trunk stability and strength.

Keep the back straight as you return to standing. Perform the action 10 to 12 times on one leg before switching to the other. Benefits include hip and glute strength and mobility, plus core and shoulder stability.

NINJA CRAWL Begin in a crawling position with the knees lifted a few inches off the ground. Rotate the foot on the right 45 degrees, and lift the left foot and right hand. With a stable core, rotate the whole body to straighten the left leg in the same direction as the right foot. Keep the left foot floating throughout the motion as you return to the starting position. Repeat on the other side, 10 to 12 times in each direction. Benefits include trunk stability, strength, mobility and coordination.

morning 1. C E Ferulic This is my liquid gold! I apply a few drops on a clean, dry face to protect my skin on a deeper level. It’s anti-aging and great for protection against free radicals.

2. AOX+ Eye Gel Since you can’t use C E Ferulic around the eye areas, I use this product. It has the same great benefits as C E, but is formulated especially for these delicate areas.

3. H.A. Intensifier I tend to run very dry. This serum helps to amplify the skin’s hyaluronic acid levels. It’s great to use after dermal fillers and to plump any fine lines and wrinkles.

4. A.G.E. Eye Complex I love this eye cream! It’s perfect for people who have dark circles or are starting to see the effects of aging around the eyes. It helps to minimize crow’s-feet and puffiness. 5. Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 This corrective moisturizer is life-changing—it feels good, smells good and helps to nourish the skin while preventing signs of aging.

6. Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50 It’s so important to use an SPF 365 days a year. While it may be raining, the harmful rays still get through. I love that this product has a universal tint, meaning it works on any skin color. It’s perfect for days you don’t want to wear any makeup—it gives just the right amount of light coverage.

1. Purifying Cleanser I use this refreshing cleanser to rinse away all the dirt and grime picked up throughout the day.

2. Renew Overnight Dry Again, my skin tends to be dry, so a good moisture at night is absolutely necessary. Because this moisturizer is not oily, it’s a great option for anyone with normal to dry skin.

Not sure how to incorporate all of these into one meal? Try the colorful, delicious recipe below!

restorative rainbow lasagna Ingredients: 12 lasagna noodles 1 tbsp Italian seasoning 1 tsp red pepper flakes 15 oz. ricotta cheese 1 c. mozzarella cheese 1 680 g (1 lb., 8 oz) jar of tomato sauce ¾ c. red lentils 1¼ c vegetable stock ½ of one large white onion, diced 3 cloves of garlic, minced ½ yellow bell pepper, diced 1 large carrot, peeled and diced 1½ c. packed spinach, chopped 2 c. mushrooms, diced 1 Chinese eggplant, diced Olive oil Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions: Part 1 Cook lasagna noodles according to package directions and keep in a bowl of cold water until the lasagna is ready to be assembled. In a small container, combine the Italian seasoning and red pepper flakes. This will serve as the seasoning for the various parts of the lasagna. Then, prepare the vegetables as described in the ingredients list. Reserve a quarter cup of tomato sauce and set aside.

Part 2 In a small pot, bring the vegetable broth to a boil. Then, add the lentils, half a cup of diced onion, and one clove of garlic to the pot. Season with one teaspoon of the seasoning mixture, reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer for 20 minutes, or until the lentils have absorbed all the broth and developed a thick, paste-like texture. Transfer to a small bowl to cool. In a medium-sized saucepan, add the mushrooms to half a tablespoon of olive oil and sauté for six minutes. Add the spinach and one clove of garlic. Cook for two minutes and then transfer to a small bowl. Return the pan to the stove, season the eggplant with one teaspoon of the seasoning mixture and sauté in one tablespoon of olive oil for about 15 minutes, or until cooked through. By now, the lentils and mushrooms should be fairly cool, and you can proceed by dividing the ricotta cheese in half between them. Mix both until the cheese is well incorporated. Finally, using the same pan that you used earlier, sauté the bell pepper, carrots and remaining onions in half a tablespoon of olive oil for eight minutes. Add one glove of garlic and cook an additional two minutes before pouring in the jar of tomato sauce. Bring to a boil, season with another teaspoon of the seasoning mixture, salt and pepper to taste, and turn off heat. Note: Be careful not to over-salt your sauce as the cheese will lend a salty flavor to the dish as well. Part 3 Preheat oven to 400 degrees F, and then coat the bottom of a 12x16 baking dish with the reserved quarter cup of tomato sauce. Layer the bottom of the dish with four overlapping lasagna noodles. On top of the noodles, spread the ricotta and lentil mixture in an even layer and top with half of the tomato, bell pepper, and onion sauce. Layer another four overlapping noodles on top of the sauce and top with the mushroom ricotta cheese mixture. Spread the eggplant on top and layer with the last four noodles. Top the lasagna with the remaining tomato sauce and finish it by sprinkling on an even layer of the mozzarella. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake an additional 10 minutes. Cool for at least 20 minutes before serving.

SKIN CARE IS OFTEN SYNONYMOUS WITH ANTI-AGING AND BEAUTY PROCEDURES. BUT DR. DEETTA GRAY, BELLEVUE CLUB MEMBER AND MEDICAL DIRECTOR FOR PINNACLE DERMATOLOGY & SKIN REJUVENATION, SAYS THERE IS AN IMPORTANT DISTINCTION BETWEEN SKIN AESTHETICS AND HEALTH. SHE ANSWERED SOME OF OUR QUESTIONS AND GAVE US THE RUNDOWN FOR EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO KEEP YOUR SKIN IN OPTIMAL HEALTH. written

function The skin is the largest organ of the human body, and with that comes a lot of responsibility. Its primary tasks include regulating body temperature, preventing fluid loss and acting as a barrier to radiation (the sun). It’s also the first line of defense against infection and pollution. Meanwhile, Gray suggests we recognize the skin’s function in another way—for its ability to act as a window to underlying disease. “It’s a very important organ,” she says. “Pay attention to it; especially if it’s changing. For example, if you see new lesions or a rash, take it seriously, and seek attention by a dermatologist to diagnose what is going on.”

protection It’s no surprise Gray’s number one piece of advice for healthy skin is to wear sunscreen, sun-protective clothing and hats and to take other protective measures every day (such as avoiding the sun during its peak hours). “The sun is ultraviolet radiation. All it takes is one hit to a cell to cause a DNA mutation and eventually a skin cancer,” she says. For a long time, the gold standard was a minimum of SPF 30 applied every two to three hours when outside. This protocol provides 97 percent protection and was thought to be the best case. However, Gray adds the latest studies show the higher the SPF the better. “Investigators have found that the high SPF sunscreen, like 70, do protect for longer periods of time.” In regard to picking a quality sunscreen, she suggests using formulas with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide; they are natural minerals and actually stay on the skin longer. There are now micronized products, too, so they rub in much better without leaving a thick white film on the skin. If you can’t find a mineral-based option, Gray stands by the opinion that “it’s much more important to protect the skin from the sun with chemical sunscreens than to go without.”

38 | february 2020 reflections

IT’S A VERY IMPORTANT ORGAN. PAY ATTENTION TO IT; ESPECIALLY IF IT’S CHANGING.

CARE 101 Taking care of your skin for optimal health can seem overwhelming. There are hundreds of serums, masks, creams and supplements promising a variety of results. Dr. Gray says it doesn’t need to be quite so complicated. There are a few simple guidelines she follows. The first is to create cell turnover, sloughing off old cells that can accumulate. “Skin can build up, and it can start to itch and crack,” she says. For the face, she suggests a gentle peel that uses either alpha hydroxy acid (glycolic and lactic acids) or beta hydroxy acid (salicylic acid). She advises clients to stay away from harsh exfoliating tools that irritate and damage delicate skin. Another suggestion for creating healthy skin is to use a variety of antioxidants, both topical and ingested. A diet rich in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and tea is a good base. “Red berries, mangoes, tomatoes are all high in antioxidants and promote healthy skin. Tomatoes, specifically, are known to reduce the effect of sun on the skin. Green tea, high in polyphenols, is also great,” Gray says. “Something I find very interesting right now is a fern called polypodium leucotomos that comes from South America. When it’s ingested it reduces the ability of the sun to burn the skin.” To infuse the skin with even more antioxidants, which protect the skin from free radicals, Gray recommends finding products that incorporate vitamins C and A, both potent antioxidants. bellevue club february 2020 | 39

disorders and diseases Finding any area of the skin that is misshapen or discolored can be scary, and Dr. Gray is careful not to frighten patients unnecessarily. But the reality is skin cancer is on the rise and remains a pressing concern for dermatologists. She says the increase in skin cancer incidence is unclear, but possibly due to increased sun exposure over a lifetime, with people living longer life spans, increased outdoor recreation and possibly earlier recognition. Currently the numbers are as follows: one in five people will have basal cell carcinoma (a slowgrowing, very treatable cancer); one in 24 people will develop superficial melanoma (more threatening but treatable); and one in 47 will develop an invasive melanoma (the most threatening). “To put it into perspective, when I was in residency a few decades ago, melanoma incidence was one in 90 people. That means the incidence has almost doubled.” See the sidebar to learn about how to identify problematic areas. Some of the other common skin disorders Gray currently sees are acne, eczema and psoriasis. “Fifteen percent of people get eczema in their lifetime and about 3 percent get psoriasis,” she says, with most flare-ups occurring during the cold-weather months, when the skin is especially susceptible to drying out. While many cases are mild and localized, these conditions can act as a flag to underlying, more systemic problems. For instance, “Up to 30 percent of psoriasis patients develop psoriatic arthritis,” Gray says. “Some of the more systemic diseases can develop silently, so I always ask my patients if there is stiffness in the joints, or if it’s hard to feel like the joints are relaxed. Is there swelling or pain?” She adds, ““Psoriasis can also be at higher risk of major cardiac events and other diseases because the whole body is inflamed.” For more information, visit https://pinnacledermatology.com/.

GETTING PERSONAL ABOUT STYLE

The story of how one Seattle native brought virtual celebrity styling straight to your closet. written

What to wear? It’s an age-old question you have to answer often over a lifetime, whether for work, social gatherings or special events. And everyone knows the feelings that can ensue if you aren’t sure of the answer—doubt, panic, frustration, for starters.

Stephanie Sprangers wants to eliminate that experience and replace it with the confidence of an A-list celebrity or Fortune 500 CEO styled from head to toe. “When Glamhive started [in 2017], we were an app for people to look at photos of fashion influencers and buy what they were wearing,” she explains. “But I realized that was not enough.” So the Seattleite tapped into her industry contacts and curated a long roster of professional stylists varying in experience, location and specialty, including some who work with Kristen Stewart, Taylor Swift, Angelina Jolie and many other well-known style icons. “A lot of people proactively want style advice or personal shopping but assume they can’t work with certain people because they aren’t in LA or New York. I wanted to build a virtual platform that makes it easy to connect with stylists and fashion influencers,” Sprangers says. With dozens of services that range from a quick style consult (starting at $25) to a complete personal makeover from a celebrity stylist ($1,350), there are options for everyone and every occasion available through a simple video chat. “The goal is to free up space in your mind so you can worry about more important things,” Sprangers says. “I’m in my 40s and super busy running my own company; there are a lot of women and men in the same position. They don’t want to spend their time worrying about what to wear.”

44 | february 2020 reflections

With Glamhive thriving, Sprangers is now focused on bringing peace of mind to even more people. She recently held the first Style Conference in Los Angeles and has plans for a New York event in April 2020. “It’s a one-day conference for stylists and style enthusiasts. We have a great lineup of speakers, and I’m really looking forward to creating a way for people to come together,” Sprangers says. She also has her eyes set on growing Glamhive internationally, with availability ranging from Canada to Kuwait.

About the Founder Reflections magazine: Have you always loved fashion? Stephanie Sprangers: Yes, it’s definitely how I’ve shared my personality with the world over the years. On top of that, I feel like I’ve always been drawn to people who have incredible style. I’ve always had women who dressed well around me, and they helped me evolve my own style. RM: Why is personal style important to you? SS: Dressing better leads to doing better. When you’re dressed in something great, you’re in a different mindset to go after your goals, and it gives you confidence. I’ve found that great personal style attracts people to you, and from there, great things can happen. And that should be available to anyone at any price point. I’m actually agnostic about where to shop—Goodwill, consignment, Nordstrom—it’s more about how to dress to reveal your personality. That motivates me. RM: How do you describe your own personal style? SS: I’d say my own style is sophisticated with an edge. More importantly, I have a small closet, and I like to wear the same thing all the time. I adhere to the idea of a capsule wardrobe, with a select number of things that all work together. I have statement pieces and classic investment pieces I can throw on and not think about it. I never stand in front of my closet and think about what to wear; I never go to events and worry about what I’m going to wear. RM: What are the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to their style? SS: All our stylists say people aren’t wearing the right size. They are wearing clothes that are too big. When you look at someone like Jen Aniston, you can bet that down to her tank top her clothes have been tailored. Stylists obsess about fit. Get clothes wherever, but tailor them to your exact body shape.

"I adhere to the idea of a capsule wardrobe, with a select number of things that all work together. I have statement pieces and classic investment pieces I can throw on and not think about it."

HOW IT WORKS Visit glamhive.com. • Choose a stylist or get matched. • Choose a service. • Set a virtual appointment. • Chat with your own personal stylist. • Feel fabulous.

46 | february 2020 reflections

RM: What’s the biggest lesson you learned when founding Glamhive? SS: Any start-up founder learns a profound number of lessons. For me, it goes back to the idea that most creative people simply have good taste. But when you create something of your own, it’s shocking how bad it is at first, how long it takes to get good. It’s surprising how long it takes to build a beautiful brand and voice, like SoulCycle or Glossier, both of which I admire. Now I’m very proud of Glamhive, and it’s brought a lot of ease and beauty to clients’ lives, but it took a long time to get there. RM: Why did you choose Seattle for your headquarters? SS: I’m from here. I went to WSU in Pullman, and my family is here. It’s pretty simple actually: I just wanted to be here.

Nontoxic Beauty Eat less red meat, drink more water, don’t cook with vegetable oil or canola oil. . .the list of things we should do to maintain a healthy lifestyle is never-ending and daunting. Beyond simply checking boxes, it’s more important to have the information for why we make certain choices.

for the amount of effort you can put into living clean, stop reading here. You’re doing plenty; you’re doing great. But if you take pride in only using organic and nontoxic beauty products as part of your health regime, keep reading and do your own research rather than trusting the labels in your cabinets.

Research shows that Americans, more so than Europeans or Canadians, don’t have the tools or knowledge to make informed, healthy decisions when it comes to beauty products. Unlike food, buying “organic,” “nontoxic” or “natural” beauty products means relatively nothing in US stores when comparing them to anything else on the shelves.

CHEMICALS TO AVOID Simple is always better: a good rule of thumb is to only use products for which you can identify all the ingredients. Of course, for some of us lacking any chemistry background, that can be a challenge when visiting Target or Sephora, so here’s a short list of red flags:

In the US, our safety standards and regulations have banned 11 ingredients from beauty and skin-care products, while the EU has banned 1,300. Not only are we behind in that aspect, but research shows that some of the 82,000 ingredients used in personal-care products are industrial chemicals that include pesticides, reproductive toxins and carcinogens.

Fragrances and Perfumes In the US, companies are not required to reveal how a particular fragrance is made. About 3,000 chemicals are used to add fragrance to a product, even for the “fragrance-free” smell. Most of these chemicals have not been tested in the US for toxicity, and many of them trigger allergies, migraines and asthma symptoms. In a survey of asthmatics it was found that three out of four individuals are triggered by added fragrances.

If you eat clean, drink plenty of water, work out five times a week, meditate daily and have hit a maximum

Sodium Laureth Sulfate You’ve probably been told not to use shampoos with sulfates, but do you know why? Sodium laureth sulfate (or SLES) is made using ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane, which the International Agency for Research on Cancer has labeled a carcinogen. Ethylene oxide has also been found to damage the nervous system and may interfere with human development. In day-to-day life, SLES is also a skin irritant and can trigger allergies. BHA and BHT Commonly used as preservatives in moisturizers, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are not only skin irritants but also human carcinogens. In Europe, BHA is listed as a category 1 priority substance based on evidence that it interferes with hormone function and regulation. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, BHA is considered safe as long as it’s under .02% of a food or product by weight of the total fat or oil content. Parabens Much like other hot terms on today’s shelves, “paraben-free” is gracing the front of many personal-care containers. Yes, parabens are known to interfere with hormone function, mimic estrogen and appear in breast-cancer tissues. Being paraben-free is a step in the right direction, but it’s important to understand the underlying issue when it comes to this chemical. Parabens are preservatives, which the FDA requires any products containing water to have if they aren’t refrigerated after opening. Because most preservatives are chemical-based, it’s important to know what the parabens in your product are being replaced with—chances are, it’s something just as dangerous. More often than not, it’s safer to opt for a face mask that requires refrigeration rather than a preservative. Formaldehyde Another preservative that you aren’t likely to see on a label is formaldehyde. It’s a human carcinogen, and research shows products with formaldehyde slowly and continuously release small amounts of the chemical into the air and your skin, hair and nails. When looking for formaldehyde in your products, check for quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate and bronopol.

Reasons to Put Poland on Your Travel Wish List Poland doesn’t get nearly the tourist numbers of some of its neighboring countries, but that’s not for lack of things to see and do. From mountains to beaches, cultural attractions to historic sites, and affordable fine dining to even more affordable street food, this Central European country is worth a trip. Here’s why:

The town squares are postcard pretty. It seems like every Polish town has a historic main square that looks like it’s from a film set. The most famous is probably Kraków’s Rynek Główny, and for good reason: It’s big, always bustling, and filled with some must-see attractions, like the Gothic-style St. Mary’s Basilica, from which a famous bugle call is played every hour. Even smaller towns, like Rzeszów in southeastern Poland, have lively squares filled with picturesque architecture and outdoor restaurants that are perfect for people watching.

They’re obsessed with ice cream. If you don’t have an ice cream cone in your hand while you’re walking down the street in Poland, you’re doing something wrong. The Poles love lody (“ice cream” in Polish), and there are shops scattered everywhere selling various versions of the sweet treat. Gelato is quite popular too.

The price is right. The value in Poland is good, especially given the exchange rate between the US dollar and the Polish złoty. It’s easy to eat a meal for less than $10, and transportation between cities on the train or bus is very reasonable. A SIM card that gave me internet access for a week was less than $3, far cheaper than other countries. Although the flight from Sea-Tac was on the higher end of what I usually pay to travel, once I arrived in Poland, I was pleasantly surprised by the cost of nearly everything.

They have the largest castle in the world. Malbork Castle was constructed by the Teutonic Knights, a group of religious crusaders, way back in the 13th century. If these walls could talk, they’d have centuries of fascinating, sometimes frightening, stories to share. The audio guide uses GPS, so as soon as you walk into a room, it recognizes where you are and begins the appropriate spiel, a handy feature. The highly acclaimed Gothic Cafe & Restaurant inside the castle fuses old traditions and modern techniques, offering beautifully plated dishes of contemporary Polish cuisine. bellevue club february 2020 | 57

The country is rich in history. Established as a state in the 10th century, Poland has a lot of history under its belt. Some of it I knew but got to understand better. A somber tour of Auschwitz-Birkenau, a German Nazi concentration and extermination camp, enhanced my knowledge of the Holocaust, and walking through the Warsaw Uprising Museum helped me dive into how Varsovians specifically were affected by World War II (budget at least a couple of hours to get through all the exhibits here).

They’re great cooks. The food is not only inexpensive but also delicious—and varied enough that most people will find plenty to eat. My mom made it a point to enjoy pierogi nearly every day, while her cousin loved the borscht and cabbage dishes. On the dessert end of the spectrum, cheesecake is popular and pączki (filled donuts) are everywhere. For a no-frills, traditional meal, a bar mleczny (“milk bar”) is a must. These have been around for more than 100 years, but they’re most often associated with Poland under communism, when the milk bars were subsidized by the government in order to give workers an affordable place to eat. Although a few hipster versions are popping up, most are like taking a step back in time. They can be a little intimidating—milk bars are aimed at locals, so there’s usually no English menu or clear sense of how it all works—but it’s worth figuring it out for lightning-fast food and an authentic experience.

They’re always up for another round. Poland also takes its vodka seriously; one of the more ubiquitous (and delicious) brands is Żubrówka Bison Grass Vodka, which is infused with a blade of grass from the Białowieża Forest, where the bison roam. A tatanka is a popular cocktail, made with Żubrówka and apple juice, but my favorite was a twist on a martini that involved cherry vodka and grapefruit. If you want to be really fancy, try the Goldwasser that’s been consumed in Gdańsk since the late 1500s, a sweet herbal liqueur with flakes of 23-karat gold.

BUSINESS ACUMEN EXPERT NEGOTIATOR TRUSTED ADVISOR

SOLD IN SAMMAMISH

I have known Mr. Delgadillo for more than ten years. Seven real estate transactions have been successfully completed in that time. The transactions included the purchase and sale of two primary residences as well as the purchase of investment properties. Mr. Delgadillo’s industry knowledge, the ability to clearly communicate and educate his clients is impressive. He possesses experience beyond anyone I had ever worked with before. The results he delivered consistently exceeded my expectations.

I have and will continue to recommend Mr. Delgadillo to friends, neighbors and family when it comes to real estate. - D.D. Lester (Sammamish)

THE OUTLOOK

R ATTLESNAKE LEDGE One of the most accessible hikes on the I-90 corridor, Rattlesnake Ledge is an Eastside classic. A mild two miles up provides sweeping views of the Cascade foothills and Rattlesnake Lake. But beware, this trail gets busy. Weekdays are best for those who want to avoid the crowds.
