OUR MAY ISSUE HAS TRADITIONALLY BEEN ABOUT LIFE ON THE WATER. Given the local landscape, you can see why this is a fun topic to explore. For example, read about Bellevue Club member Drew Myers, who loves the water so much he rides a jet ski to work every day (page 18). Also, be sure to check out the feature on Sylvia’s Swimwear, a fashion-forward Bellevuebased company, on page 44. However, May is also about celebrating the coming of summer and all the many exciting things that go on—both in and out of the water. So we broadened the theme a little this year, and we’re glad we did. Lifelong member Katherine Dash talks about the beauty of equestrian sports and how she rose to the top of the field, earning a national champion title last year. We also cover how to spend the warmer days in the good company of your four-legged friends. Read a wrap-up of how to adventure with your dog on page 40. Lastly, because rainy days still make their way into the weather forecast, we let Bellevue Club Zumba instructor Gina Hoover show off how to raise your heartrate by dancing to the beat. She’s got a very special workshop happening this month, but also discusses why any day is a good day to get moving. Read more about it on page 50.

Eastside news from our partners at 425 Business magazine. WAZE CARPOOL APP LAUNCHES IN WASHINGTON STATE

If you drive a car and live in the Puget Sound region, it’s likely you have downloaded the Waze app to find the fastest route along our region’s increasingly congested roadways. Now, Waze is hoping you will use its technology to share the ride to work with your neighbors and co-workers. In April, the company launched Waze Carpool in Washington state. The app allows drivers and passengers to choose their fellow carpoolers based on profiles, star ratings, number of mutual friends, and customizable filters such as same gender and co-worker. Carpoolers can continue to use Waze’s free app for real-time traffic updates and HOV routings to travel the fastest routes.

SMART SONOGRAPHY

Medical sonography has seen many technological improvements over the years, but Kevin Goodwin, CEO of EchoNous, hopes to further advance the field by incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Uscan, the ultrasound machines the Redmond company develops. “A segment of the healthcare industry that holds immense opportunity to apply AI and machine learning is ultrasound,” said Goodwin. “It’s ripe for innovation.”

Do you prefer to buy local when it comes to your stock portfolio? You’ll soon have a new Eastside option. Bellevue-based Smartsheet recently announced it wants to go public. On Mar. 26, Smartsheet, a software for managing and automating teamwork, filed a registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission seeking an initial public offering.

NUTRITIONIST’S CORNER

We live in a culture oversaturated with nutrition information, health blogs, diet books and exercise programs—all flexing their muscles, claiming to be the best. As a health-conscious consumer, how do you navigate this flood of information? I am a registered dietitian nutritionist trained in the art of detecting deception and untruths within science, advertisements, and diet books, and it can be difficult even for me at times! You and I both know intuitively that everyone is different. The biochemistry of my body works slightly differently than the biochemistry of your body. It’s why some of us have success with certain training programs and diet styles, while others won’t have success even if they follow the exact same plan. It is my

24 | may 2018 reflections

opinion that any program or professional pushing one style of eating, or one style of training, is getting it all wrong. The magic key to health and wellness is individuality. Although very similar, humans have bio-individuality of around 1 percent in our genetic code. That 1 percent allows for differences in height, weight, skin and eye color, of course, but it also allows for differences in the way we process nutrients, respond to medications, and even increase or decrease our risk of disease. After the completion of the human genome project in 2003, technology was able to quickly advance, making the process of sequencing a human genome jump from 13 years and $3 billion down to several weeks and a few hundred dollars. The

scientific advancement has truly been astonishing. Health-care providers can now look deeper into the genetics and biochemistry of each individual, allowing us to anticipate where risk areas may lie, to work on preventive interventions, and to capitalize on genetic advantages. We have shifted from educated guessing to precision intervention. Which leads me to the launch of Precision Health, the Bellevue Club’s new Wellness Program. This cutting-edge program was designed by dietitians, trainers and staff, based on the concept of precision medicine—an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment and lifestyle for each person. Alongside health giants such as the Stanford Medical Center,

the National Institutes of Health, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the Duke University Health System, The Bellevue Club has rolled out a 12-week precision health and wellness program that incorporates genetics, individual biochemistry, nutrition, exercise and lifestyle to design and execute a unique program for each individual’s health and longevity. Come learn more and meet our panel of nutrition and fitness experts at our free information seminar on Monday, May 21, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. I am excited to introduce you to our new program and fill you in on all the details! sports drinks written

by

lauren hunsberger

Traditional sports drinks—because they are often filled with artificial flavors, colors and sweeteners—have fallen out of favor. But there is still a place and time for electrolyte-packed refreshments, especially during those long cardiovascular-based exercises where a considerable amount of sweat is lost. Turn the page for easy-to-make sports drinks that offer much more than replenishing with water. Have fun and mix and match to suit your specific palate and workout.

BASIC BASES

Coconut water + filtered water—With a ratio of three to one (three cups coconut water to one cup water), building a base with coconut water provides many essential electrolytes lost during exercise—including potassium, sodium and magnesium. These essential minerals help with muscle contraction as well as overall cardiovascular efficiency. Coconut water also provides natural sugars for a carbohydrate boost. Steeped tea—While it’s not as naturally rich in electrolytes as coconut water, a mixture of tea and water can give your sports drink a great flavor and possibly a hit of caffeine, if you choose to go with something like a flavored green tea. The important thing with tea is to make it weaker than if you were just drinking it straight. JUICY ADD-INS

Watermelon—This fun summer fruit actually packs a nutrient punch. The highlights include being a good source of lycopene, antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin A and potassium. Citrus fruits—Lime, lemon, orange, and grapefruit are known for providing a large shot of vitamin C, but they also add folate, potassium and a range of phytochemicals to the mix. Tart cherry—A recent darling of the sports performance world, tart cherry juice (unsweetened) is thought to fight inflammation in a major way while providing a dose of powerful antioxidants.

30 | may 2018 reflections

Beet juice—A popular choice for cyclists and other endurance athletes, beets have been shown to improve blood flow and cardiovascular health in general. NATURAL SWEETENERS

Raw honey—Good for quickly booting energy levels, raw honey purchased from a local source can also help combat allergy issues, which helps those who do their cardio outside. Maple syrup—More than a good source of calories and easily used carbohydrates, this natural sweetener is packed with antioxidants as well as minerals like magnesium and iron. ADDITIONAL MINERALS

Sea salt—While you only use about ¼ teaspoon, this may be the most important ingredient as it can actually combat dehydration and provide other minerals. But careful not to overdo it. Also, avoid regular table salt because it’s often highly processed.

simple recipe • • • • •

3 cups coconut water (or tea) 1 cup filtered water ½ cup fruit juice add-in of choice 1–2 tablespoons sweetener of choice ¼ teaspoon sea salt

Unique. Historic. One-of-a-kind. Exclusive. Luxury. Iconic. Private. Lake front. As brightly as those terms glow, they are not close to describing The Lake Houses at Eagle Cove. Eagle Cove is not just a house in a gated, lakefront community, it is it's OWN gated community, nestled right up to the sparkling edge of Lake Washington. Three luxury single-family homes, a guest home, plus one monumental boat house. All right on the shore, with staggeringly 180 degree vistas from nearly every room in each house. As stunning as the history is long.

K R A B THROUGH BELLEVUE A guide to enjoying the dog days of summer

IN

the last couple of years, the dog population in the greater Seattle area has surpassed the child population. More people are holding off on raising little ones and choosing instead to opt for furry friends to share the city with. Sure, your best friend loved snuggling by your feet next to a fire all winter, but now that the sun’s out, it’s time to stretch those paws and get outdoors. Of course, there are Robinswood Community Park, Wilburton Hill Park and Mercer Slough Nature Park if you and your pup are looking for a nice walk, but there are several other places where you can take your partner in crime that you might not know about yet.

TAKE A SPLASH Get out on Lake Union and a little closer to nature with a kayak rental from Northwest Outdoor Center. The guided paddleboard tours or kayak tours are dog-friendly, but be ready to do a little extra work—I don’t think your pup is quite ready to handle a paddle yet. → Learn more at nwoc.com.

bellevue club may 2018 | 33

HIT THE SKIES If you and your pup are adventure seekers, Kenmore Air offers petfriendly flight-seeing tours. Enjoy a water takeoff, an air tour of Seattle and a gentle landing on Lake Union. Lap dogs are permitted with no charge, but a seat must be purchased for dogs more than 25 pounds.

→ Learn more at kenmoreair.com. SUNDAY ICE CREAM CRUISE Dogs are welcome every Sunday on the Fremont Sunday Ice Cream Cruise. Enjoy the sun and a tour of Lake Union alongside your pup and a bowl of ice cream. Well-behaved and leashed pets are welcome on the Seattle ferries every Sunday—don’t worry, your pup doesn’t need to have “sea legs,” the ferries ride smoothly and are easily managed by our four-legged friends.

BECOME A FLYDOG The Seattle FlyDogs is a local not-for-profit community club open to individuals by membership application. FlyDogs was created to enrich the relationship between dogs and their handlers by offering participation and training in flyball, a skillful and athletic sport. → Learn more at seattleflydogs.com.

EXPLORE LOCAL MARKETS The Bellevue Farmers Market stopped allowing pets in the last couple of years, but the Fremont Sunday and West Seattle Farmers Markets both still encourage furry friends to get involved in your weekly fresh-food foraging. The markets can get pretty crowded once the sun comes out, but if your pup loves people, it might just be their new favorite Sunday stop. → Learn more at fremontmarket.com.

FANCY A LITTLE VINO? Covington Cellars in Woodinville is a hospitable and dogfriendly winery that goes all-out. Wine tastings and pairings are their specialty. MEMBER PROFILE

HIGH A few months ago, Katherine Dash was crowned the United States Equestrian Federation 2017 Grand National Champion in the Junior Hunter division. The Bellevue Club member talks about the path that got her there. Reflections magazine: How did you get into horseback riding? Katherine Dash: Horses have always been a part of my life.

My mom rode horses at a young age, and when I was born, she picked it up again. It was always something we did together. I would ride a pony while she was doing her lesson, and it was a good bonding experience.

RM: When did you start taking it more seriously? KD: I started taking it to the next level when I was in

seventh grade. I was involved in a lot of sports—swim team, soccer, basketball—but I knew I needed to pick one, and I chose riding.

RM: Why was that the one? KD: I love animals, and it’s a way you can make a team with

an animal. When you make a connection with them, it’s super special.

RM: What did riding seriously look like for you? KD: I started riding at a barn in Bellevue on a horse named

Luck. Then I moved to a barn in Portland because that’s where the top trainer in the PNW, Shelley Campf, was. So I drove to Portland every weekend to train.

It was hard to balance because when I was home I couldn’t ride, and when I was in Portland I was only riding. It was a challenge to find balance with academics and sports.

RM: Do you have any advice for other student athletes struggling with the same thing? KD: Spend time on your schoolwork, then give yourself a

break, and then do something you love. If you do both halfway, you’ll never be satisfied. You have to give your all in both.

RM: What was the most challenging thing for you once you started competing seriously? KD: Dealing with my nerves. I’m a perfectionist, and I always

wanted to go in the ring and not mess up. But I really had to work on stepping back and relying on my instinct, trusting that I’d practiced enough.

RM: How did you improve on your focus and address your nerves? KD: I am really into listening to music. Twenty minutes

before I go into the ring, I plug in and go off by myself and think about what I need to do and visualize the course. I have a special playlist with certain songs that get me in the right state of mind.

bellevue club may 2018 | 39

RM: Where did you get the idea to visualize your performance? KD: I actually started meeting with a mental skills coach. I

realized I was getting distracted. When I get nervous I don’t get sweaty palms or anything, I just kind of shut down and get super relaxed. So the mental skills coach taught me what to do in certain situations, and one of the biggest things I took away was visualization. It made me plan out every single corner. It took my mind off getting nervous because it was something I could control. Having a mental skills coach was very beneficial, and I recommend it to everyone.

RM: Did you have any rituals or superstitions before getting into the ring? KD: I’m very superstitious, and everyone always teases me

about it. The biggest thing is I have a special show shirt. All show shirts are white on the outside, but the inside collar of mine has an ice-cream-cone print. On a really important day, I pull out the ice-cream-cone shirt. It’s getting pretty old by now, but I still wear it sometimes.

RM: The past few years have been very successful for you. Can you tell me about that journey? KD: Yeah, after riding in Portland, I started riding with

a trainer, Archie Cox, in Southern California. It took a really long time to convince my mom to move my horses to California; it was a major commitment. But we moved to that barn midway through my freshman year—that was four years ago now. It was an adjustment because the people in Southern California were at a higher level, and I had to bring up my skills. That was a great experience, though, and eventually I became champion at three out of four indoor horse shows [Capital Challenge Horse Show, the Pennsylvania National and the Washington International]. Going in, I never thought that was possible, I just wanted to win a ribbon. To be champion of three was super exciting.

“Going in, I never thought that was possible, I just wanted to win a ribbon. To be champion of three was super exciting.

bellevue club may 2018 | 41

RM: How did that feel? KD: It felt surreal. Capital Challenge was the first one, and it

felt unreal. I didn’t know what to say, it seemed almost lucky and I thought I’d never be able to repeat it. So for it to happen two more times, it was crazy. That’s only happened a few times in the sport—that one rider won three. That kind of opened more doors for me and gave me some national recognition.

RM: But your biggest accomplishment just happened recently, correct? KD: Yes, the following year, a family sent me a sales horse

named Everglow to ride. He had done some shows, but no one was picking him up. I wasn’t sure about him either at first, but the more I rode him the better we did, and by the end of the year I was the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) 2017 Grand National Champion in the Junior Hunter division.

42 | may 2018 reflections

RM: What was special about riding Everglow? KD: Riding him was cooler than my previous horse, Boss,

because Boss was already proven with a professional. With Everglow, no one really liked him. They thought he was too difficult and didn’t possess the qualities of a winner, so to be able to prove that he is a champion felt really good.

RM: What comes after being named National Champion? KD: Right now, I’m taking a gap year. I wanted to be able to

compete in the indoor horse shows one more time, which I did, and now I have aged out of the division and am considered amateur. It’s actually a less competitive circuit, so I just purchased a young horse, Patriot, so I could bring him up through the ranks. This is a new challenge for me, to be able to practice training a horse.

“It’s really nice to have people around you who support you. I had some really good teachers that encouraged me to go for it, as well as mentors and, of course, my family too.”

RM: Are you ever going to try and become professional? KD: No, I’m going to school in the fall, and I want to focus on that for

a while. And I thought about going down the college athlete path, but a lot of my friends did it and don’t enjoy it. It’s not the same and it’s a full-time job. I want to focus on academics to be able to get a job and support myself and then maybe ride in the future like my mom did.

RM: Any other insight you have for others training to achieve goals? KD: I keep going back to if you love it, go for it—anything you put

your mind to, you can do. As a young rider in Bellevue, I never thought I’d be able to ride on that top level, but believe in yourself and really go for it. Also, it’s really nice to have people around you who support you. I had some really good teachers that encouraged me to go for it, as well as mentors and, of course, my family too.

swimwear

bellevue club may 2018 | 45

Time to suit up! If you’re planning a vacation, or you’ve simply been wearing the same bikini you bought three years ago, the impending warm weather months are reason enough to give your swim style an upgrade. “One of the hardest things is buying for the Washington audience,” Sylvia’s Swimwear owner and buyer, Sylvia Bailey, says. Since the Pacific Northwest doesn’t get sun most of the year, our beach and pool culture isn’t as forward-thinking as that of California or Florida. “We tend to see trends come here about a year after we see the pieces at shows.” Much like most other Washington fashion, Bailey says most customers are looking for comfort and reliability versus the trendiest two-pieces. With that in mind, Bailey and her assistant buyer, Julie Busik, took a dive into this year’s hottest trends, how to wear them and even how to avoid bikini blunders when it comes to choosing your style and print.

46 | may 2018 reflections

FOR THE FASHION-FORWARD For those unafraid to wear interesting shapes, sizes and pieces in the name of fashion and trendiness, this year’s swimsuits took a note from daywear styles. Just like on the runways and in most trendy stores, velvet is making an appearance in swimwear. “Though it might not be the most reasonable swimming option, it can make for a cute laying out and to-and-fromthe-beach outfit with a pair of shorts,” Busik says. Other runway looks this season included earth tones and pastels, romantic florals and new, innovative cuts. Bailey’s big takeaways from the shows this year were tall triangle tops and what she calls, “back and front interest: you know, tons of straps going in different directions.” FOR CURVES IN ALL THE RIGHT PLACES Sometimes it’s the ladies with the smallest waists who run into some swimsuit issues. If your chest or rear are larger, but you have a small midsection, finding suits to cover your curves and still fit snug around the waist can be a challenge. Both buyers suggest back-tie or “string” bikinis. Easily adjustable, a tie suit can go up to whatever size you need for coverage, but then be adjusted to fit your waist. All bikini pieces are usually sold separately too, so if your less curvy half is a completely different size, there’s no need to stress.

bellevue club may 2018 | 47

FOR THE FITNESS-MINDED As always, black is the biggest hit when it comes to fitness suits. If you spend a lot of time in pools, you want to look for tags with “100% polyester” for chlorine resistance. With water fitness becoming more popular each summer, designers are branching out a bit and adding florals to their regular black or blue basic suits. FOR THOSE WHO WANT MORE CURVES “You get to have a lot more fun with styles,” Bailey says. Whereas most other body types are trying not to add more weight, girls who want to add the appearance of curves can play with modern styles in ways no one else can. The buyers at Sylvia’s Swimwear suggest sweetheart necklines, twist fronts, rouging, ruffles and suits with lines that dip in toward the waist to give the illusion of curves.

48 | may 2018 reflections

FOR THIGH AND HIP COVERAGE “We mostly see this with moms,” Bailey explains. “Chasing little ones around the pool, having to bend over to pick them up, running around, you don’t need an added worry of bending over and exposing anything.” Good news for those who want a little more coverage: Swim skirts are coming back, and this time they’re a little lighter and a lot cuter. New, stylish swim skirts are shorter and land right at the bottom of where a normal bathing suit would. They also look more like tennis skirts now as opposed to the old-fashioned skorts they used to be. Boy shorts are also making a comeback with a lot of the same: shorter, cuter and now built for style as well as comfort.

FOR THOSE WHO WANT A MIRACLE The most popular and well known of all suits: The Miraclesuit. Originally designed for “apple-shaped” women, Miraclesuits are worn across the board. Women of all ages, sizes and shapes who come to Sylvia for styling advice, ask to try one on. On average, they can make most women look 10 pounds thinner. “They really are a staple,” Bailey says. “Some women come in, know exactly what they want and are just visiting to get it in another color. They won’t even look at another suit. “It’s all about what you’re going to be comfortable in. Whether it’s stylish or the exact look you were going for, I ask everyone the same thing: ‘Forget about everyone else, are you going to be comfortable putting on this suit and spending a day at the beach in it?’ That’s it.”

Get Moving – Activities To Get Your Heart Pumping ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT

Once the beach and poolside lounging starts to get boring (as if), burn off those maitais with a Kayak Kauai paddling tour up the Wailua River. In addition to kayaking, the five-hour tour includes a hike to the not-so-secret Secret Falls where it is fun to test your mettle in the refreshing waters by standing under the falls. Pro tip: Plan your footwear for the muddy trail and bring ample mosquito repellant. Kayak Kauai also offers sea kayaking tours, including a mellow paddle and snorkel tour up the Hanalei River into the bay or a full-day tour along the Na Pali coast where you’ll encounter sea caves, hanging valleys, waterfalls, and beaches only accessible by boat. The day ends at the tour’s final destination of Polihale State Park where participants are shuttled back to Wailua River Marina by van.

Let’s say you have fond memories of riding a bike as a kid and it sounds like it might be a fun thing to do on vacation, but you don’t want to sweat through the spray tan you just got moments before your flight. The Waimea Canyon Bike Downhill Tour is your ticket to sweat-free cycling (but this is Hawaii, so you’ll probably still sweat). This half-day tour starts at an elevation of 3,600 feet and it’s all downhill from there with frequent photo op stops. Or skip the tour, rent a set of wheels, and conquer the canyon in reverse starting from the bottom. Either way, sunset cocktails are highly recommended. → Outfitterskauai.com

FEET FIRST

There are many beautiful vistas when hiking throughout the Waimea Canyon, but thick clouds can often obscure the view. Another of the island’s classic hikes, the 11-mile Kalalau Trail (aka the Na Pali coast hike) traverses the cliffs along the Na Pali coastline. The full length requires camping equipment, a $20 permit, a strong body, and experience in the wild. Fortunately, the first two miles from Ke‘e Beach to Hanakapi‘ai Beach are accessible without a permit and afford fantastic views. This section of the Kalalau Trail is highly recommended for the able-bodied—wear sturdy shoes, and bring lots of water and snacks. Warning: make sure to keep everyone out of the surf at Hanakapi‘ai Beach, known for its deadly riptides.

→ Kalalautrail.com SURF’S UP

Surfing is a way of life here in its birthplace and the ultimate rite of Hawaiian-vacation-passage. Obviously, one doesn’t just charge a bomb (that’s “surfer” for aggressively going after a massive wave, in case you’re not hip to the lingo) on the first ride. But the instructors at Hawaiian Surfing Adventures will have you gliding over Hanalei Bay’s notoriously gentle waves in no time. Riding your first wave is guaranteed to make produce long-lasting smiles and unrealistic dreams of giving up your day job to go pro. → Hawaiiansurfingadventures.com

MINOR ADVENTURES: JUST FOR KIDS

Kipu Ranch Adventures offers a Jungle Waterfall Tour especially geared towards kids (ages 7-17). The two-hour scenic adventure traverses the 3,000-acre ranch’s historic trail system via 4x4; water, snack, helmet, goggles, and bandana provided (close-toed shoes required). → Kiputours.com

Reservations required; $135/person; → Westinprinceville.com/Princeville-kauai-dining New this spring, families can now set up private tours at Limahuli Garden and Preserve allowing participants a chance to touch, taste, and take in the garden on an exclusive 2.5-hour tour. → Ntbg.org/gardens/limahuli Don’t miss the island’s weekly food tour offered each Tuesday. LOCAL FLAVORS

It doesn’t get more authentically Hawaiian than a plate lunch at Pono Market in Kapaa (poke, poi, laulau, macaroni salad, the works). When in Hanalei, make a beeline for farmer-owned Hanalei Taro & Juice Co. for plate lunches, must-have fresh fruit smoothies, and taro-mochi cake—a perfect post-surf lesson stop. Kauai Juice Co. uses local ingredients in its Kauaimade kombucha and pressed juices, along with a line of almond milk and vegetarian foods (bring your bottle back for a discount on your next drink. Enjoy a breezy open-air lunch at Oasis on the Beach in Kapaa serving locally-sourced ingredients with the dreamiest of views. Save room for a slice or eight of lilikoi (passion fruit) pie at Hamura Saimin in Lihue. Shave ice stands are everywhere and all claim to be the best, but Wailua Shave Ice and The Fresh Shave make all-natural syrups from locally grown, in-season fruits.

Treat Yourself It just so happens that the island’s premier accommodations also have the best spas. Coincidence? We think not. St. Regis Princeville Resort almost has it all – private yoga classes, the luxurious Halalea Spa, the renowned Makai Golf Club, afternoon tea, and of course sunset Champagne. Perched high on a bluff means amazing views, but sadly no readily accessible beach.

→ Stregisprinceville.com On the other side of the island in Koloa, the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa might be all the vacation needed in one location – beautiful grounds, fantastic interconnected pools, easy beach access, and hammocks for lazy afternoons. Its onsite spa Anara is worth a visit even without booking a service (though you absolutely should for maximum rejuvenation points). → Kauai.grand.hyatt.com
