THREE STORIES GEARED FOR LADIES OF ALL AGES

A P E R S O NA L NOT E FR OM W E N DY

About two and a half years ago in July of 2016, I was on Vashon Island with my family after the loss of my oldest son, John Jr. We put our arms around one-another to borrow strength and feel our love; to know that we can keep walking forward. We shed tears and wore smiles of memories of the all too few times we had with him… and just at that moment, one of the bright spots came with a knock at the door of this waterfront home. Someone went to see who was there and it was An Otter… full-fledged, 4 footed, damp, furry, brighteyed Otter. For this animal to get out of the water, climb up a significant series of steps, get himself all the way around to the front door… is an incredible feat. He was hungry. I heard all of this commotion and wondered what everyone was talking about. It brought us out of our lethargy and then came the mission of closing the doors, shutting everything we could, clearing the table, getting leftover dinners inside. He climbed under the deck and I felt sorry for him. Maybe the hunting in the water there is not plentiful. I discovered that this is not an uncommon adventure that this semi-aquatic fish-eating mammal incurs. I’ve had raccoons, squirrels, chickens, deer, cats, bears, dogs and children come and ask for food. This was my first otter. For just a while we had something else on our mind and smiled. He brought his family to visit and the front deck (their hideaway) was busy. My youngest Granddaughter was the drawing card of their interest. We had to watch her closely as she was as fascinated with them as they with her. Both families (four legs and two legs) stayed several days. It was hard to say goodbye to our anchor of faith… we are full of conviction we will see him again. In Memory of John H. Lister Jr. -Wendy M. Lister

For example, turn to page 52 and read about member Sophie Sharp. Last year, when she was only 14 years old, she organized a fun run on the Eastside that raised $20,000 for women’s rights and education in Rwanda. This year, her goal is even bigger. She is an outstanding young athlete and someone we anticipate will make a huge difference for years to come. If you need to add a little motivation to your workout routine, check out the feature on Penelope Livingston on page 42. She recently changed her life and health with weight lifting, and now she wants to share what she learned about her body at 65. Lastly, if you are craving some quality time with the women in your life, read about travel writer Julie Arnan’s recent trip to Hood River. From shopping and wine tasting to snowshoeing, she details a great trip for any group of girls.

DELILLE CELLARS ANNOUNCES NEW TASTING ROOM AND RETAIL TOWER

RENDERING BY DELILLE CELLARS AND HINGE STUDIO

CATHAY PACIFIC LAUNCHES NONSTOP SEATTLE-HONG KONG SERVICE APRIL 1 “Seattle has been on our radar for a long time,” said Philippe Lacamp, Senior Vice President, Americas at Cathay Pacific. “I have been at the airline for 27 years, and I can tell you we have been looking at it, to my knowledge, for at least two decades.”

Woodinville winery DeLille Cellars announced in April that it will open a new three-level tasting room and retail tower this fall at the former Redhook brewery in Woodinville’s Hollywood District. The space will allow for seated tastings, tours, and a wine club rooftop deck with views of Sammamish Valley and Mount Rainier, according to a statement from the winery. The adjoining winemaking facility has operated since January.

local officials excited over amazon’s plan to move thousands of workers to bellevue Amazon’s announcement in April that it will move thousands of its workers from Seattle to Bellevue has left officials in the Eastside city overjoyed. “As a community we’ve worked hard to anticipate this type of positive growth downtown, and Amazon is a natural fit,” Bellevue Mayor John Chelminiak said in a statement. “It’s also critical that these types of jobs stay in the region. Bellevue values our business community and we look forward to working with the company as their transition progresses. Welcome home, Amazon!” The tech giant plans to move its Seattle-based worldwide operations team to Bellevue by 2023.

BELLEVUE POLICE FOUNDATION’S 10TH ANNUAL BREAKFAST

OFFICER CRAIG HANAUMI WAS RECOGNIZED FOR HIS SERVICE

The Bellevue Police Foundation’s 10th Annual Breakfast was held March 15 at the Hyatt Regency Bellevue. It was attended by more than 240 guests and raised more than $170,000. Funds raised are used to support the Bellevue Police Department by providing grants to purchase state-of-the-art equipment and training. In the past, grants purchased a Crises Response van, K9 officers (dogs and training for their human officers), police bicycles, equipment and bike team training. This year’s breakfast featured two officers in a presentation called “On the scene with Smith and Keene.” Andy and Jim shared stories of their careers, family and personal life and how it feels to be in a community where they are supported and appreciated. In addition, displays were set up before and after the breakfast for guests to talk with officers and see equipment funded in prior years. The Bellevue Club Hotel was a proud sponsor of this year’s event.

how to use MALA BEADS BEYOND BEING A FASHION TREND, MALA BEADS HOLD THOUSANDS OF YEARS OF HISTORY AND A PURPOSE NOT TO BE IGNORED.

The term “mala” is Sanskrit for meditation garland. Mala beads, also known as prayer beads, are beaded necklaces traditionally used for Buddhist meditation and prayer. THE BEADS

The 108 beads that make up each strand can be made out of anything from sandalwood to jade, and each type of bead is said to have different properties. The number 108 is sacred in Hinduism, Buddhism and yogi tradition. Malas come in strands to represent each prayer or mantra that’s repeated a total of 108 times; essentially the beads help the practitioner keep track. OVERHAND KNOTTING

Small knots between each bead are a good indicator of a mala versus a beaded necklace. The knots make malas stronger and gives your fingers space for meditative turning of the beads.

POPULAR MATERIALS Jasper enhances balance and is used

by those transitioning in life.

Lava is believed to promote strength,

which is good for people dealing with struggle or self-judgment.

Turquoise is the stone of healing and communication between the spiritual and physical. Clear quartz is the “master healer”

and will connect you to your higher self.

Rose quartz is the stone of love and is

used to align the heart chakra.

MALA-LED SEATED MEDITATION Set an intention, mantra or prayer. Hold your beads in your dominant hand. Begin turning each bead individually using your fingers. Take a deep inhale and exhale as you turn each bead. With each bead and each breath, silently repeat your mantra or prayer. Once you hit the guru bead, take a moment to reflect and pause. THE GURU BEAD

At the end of the strand, the guru bead attaches directly to the tassel and is the 109th bead. This bead symbolizes the guru that taught the prayer to the student using the mala and pays homage to the student-guru relationship. THE TASSEL

There are several variations of what the tassel at the end of the mala represents. Some argue it’s for aesthetic purposes, but more popular opinions include alignment, the connection of all people as one and consciousness. Whichever reason resonates with you is fine to take into your practice.

28 | may 2019 reflections

Sit in the stillness of meditation.

You can also use your mala to enhance asana practice (the physical practice of yoga poses) by placing it at the top of your yoga mat as a reminder of your intention as you move through your practice.

Work for Wellness FIVE EASY HABITS FOR BETTER WORK-HEALTH BALANCE

written

by

samantha lund

A

s someone who sits through the average nine-to-five workday in front of a computer, I frequently need to combat the back pain associated with “tech neck” and stiffness in my legs. On a Friday afternoon, I decided to research standing desks, thinking if I found enough benefits to the recent desk-craze, I could justify a splurge in the name of work-health balance. As it turns out, the concept behind standing desks may be based on marketing and little scientific research. In October of last year, the American Journal of Epidemiology published a study comparing 7,000 people over a 12-year period who either sat or stood at work for long hours of the day. This study concluded that people who stood for long periods of their day had a greater risk for heart disease. Not only that, but people who stand for long periods also experience foot and ankle swelling, as well as more spine pain. Since the standing desk may not be the answer to all your office-related health problems, here are five ways you can find work-wellness balance to experience the physical and emotional benefits.

WALK FOR FIVE MINUTES FOR EACH HOUR OF SITTING

The difference between sitting and standing all day isn’t much, and research shows standing only burns eight more calories per hour than sitting. However, the same study found that walking for five minutes per hour during the workday burns an extra 100 calories, improves mood and reduces food cravings.

bellevue club may 2019 | 33

STOCK YOUR DESK WITH HEALTHY SNACKS

Keep dried fruits and healthy snacks in one of your desk drawers so when you are craving a snack, you have healthy options that you’re likely to eat. Though fruits usually have a lot of sugar, it’ll still be less than most office snacking options. PRACTICE SAFE COMPUTER-ING

Staring at a computer can strain your eyes and lead to headaches, sleep problems, neck strain and a myriad of other issues. If you’re suffering from eye strain or headaches throughout the day, try a pair of blue-light-blocking glasses. If you’re suffering from back, arm or wrist pain, try adjusting your computer. The top of your computer should line up with your eyes, and your desk/keyboard should land just below your elbows. DECORATE YOUR DESK

Decorating your desk has proved to reduce stress and anxiety and improve focus. The most effective ways to improve your work space are adding color, organizational elements, plants, and pictures or memories that bring you joy. COLLABORATE

A study in the journal Science found that people adapt and change habits more effectively when done in group settings of people with similar traits. Finding coworkers with similar goals who are currently in a similar position could go a long way for your new healthy habit building. However, relying on people who are much more advanced or have vastly different current lifestyles is not nearly as effective.

ROUND THE BASES Ryan Rowland-Smith and Trent Oeltjen bring their big-league mindset to kids in Bellevue.

T

his August, ex-Mariner Ryan Rowland-Smith and past teammate Trent Oeltjen will bring their world-class camp, NxtGen Baseball, to Bellevue. The three-day camp includes plenty of training drills and skill development. But Rowland-Smith says the most important thing is the one-on-one interaction the kids have with them and each other. “Growing up in Australia, we didn’t have access to high-quality coaches. So having the chance to do that for these kids is what we’re passionate about. It’s fun for us to give every ounce of energy we have,” he says. Reflections talked to Rowland-Smith about how and why he started NxtGen.

Reflections magazine: Why did you start NxtGen camps? Ryan Rowland-Smith: My business partner, Trent [Oeltjen], and I have known each other since we were 12 years old and we went on to play in the big leagues together. We talked a few years ago and asked: How can we give back to the kids of Australia? How can we make an impact? So we came up with the idea for a camp. RM: Why did you bring NxtGen to Bellevue? RRS: I live in Seattle now, and it feels like home. That makes it easy to be passionate about the kids here. Plus, in Bellevue there is such a good network of families. The kids are hungry and excited enough to come out. We want to tell these kids that if two guys from Australia can do it, so can you.

bellevue club may 2019 | 39

RM: What did sports bring to your life as a young athlete? RRS: The physical activity first and foremost. But kids need opportunities for face-to face contact with peers, teachers and mentors. Especially with this generation. Social media can bring people together, but it also isolates them. It’s refreshing for kids to have a mentor and role model look them right in the eye and express the value of pursuing something. RM: What are some of the most memorable moments from camps in the past? RRS: The moments that affect me are when parents tell me their kids came out of their shell. It doesn’t have to be all about getting into the big leagues. We just want them to be passionate about something, be the best version of themselves.

MEET THE PLAYERS TRENT OELTJEN From the World Baseball Classic to winning a silver medal in the 2004 Summer Olympic Games to succeeding in Major League Baseball, Trent has done it all during his professional career that spans 14 years. Trent played Major League Baseball for the LA Dodgers from 2010 to 2012 and for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2009. He also represented Team Australia at numerous international events. RYAN ROWLAND-SMITH Ryan Rowland-Smith played five seasons of Major League Baseball, four with the Seattle Mariners and one with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He also represented Australia numerous times, including the 2004 Summer Olympic in Athens on the silver-medal-winning team. The left-hander carved out 15 years of professional baseball and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience.

At 65, Bellevue Club member Penelope Livingston changed her body and life, and now she wants to let everyone know it’s never too late to get fit.

there’s one thing Penelope Livingston wants to shout from the rooftops, it’s that you can get really, really strong at any age. She especially wants to spread the message to other women. “It’s truly unbelievable to me,” she says. “I never expected to feel so good and strong.”

At 65 years old, Livingston is in the best shape of her life. She lifts weights heavier than she ever imagined three to four times a week, has less body fat than ever before and is full of energy. Surprisingly, her path to peak fitness and an optimal body composition started less than a year ago.

bellevue club may 2019 | 43

“My motivation to get really fit in my 60s came from two places. The first is I have Alzheimer’s in my family,” Livingston says. Both her parents and sister suffered from the disease. “I know I can’t eradicate what might happen to me with my family history, but exercise is known to help the brain. That really motivated me in the recent past because I want to enjoy my life.” Her other motivator was a few pairs of unworn jeans that sat in her closet for years—which she can now wear with comfort. While Livingston had enough motivation, she says she has always had a complicated relationship with going to the gym. “I’m no gym rat,” she says.

44 | may 2019 reflections

Knowing this, through the decades she tried a few different trainers and routines, but nothing stuck for long. She also raised a family and enjoyed a 20-year career as a marriage and family therapist working for the Employee Assistance Program at the Boeing Company. So unfortunately, fitness wasn’t a priority. “It was hard for me to exercise, and I wasn’t prone to doing it,” she says. Last year, Livingston began working with Bellevue Club personal trainer Tyler Greer, and immediately knew something was different this time. “I need it to be fun,” she says. “Of course a trainer has to have expertise, but it also has to be fun. I need it to be an enjoyable process. And that’s exactly what I get with Tyler. He’s been a great match for me.”

“You are the only one that can decide you deserve to feel and look healthier right now.”

Both Livingston and Greer say one of the biggest keys to their success together is goal setting. “I wasn’t terribly overweight, maybe 10 pounds. I wanted to lose it, but more so I wanted to work on my posture and building muscle,” Livingston says. Greer was more than happy to help Livingston set and reach those goals. His main focus in doing so was to teach her safe ways to build strength. “It’s a mindset of wanting to stay functional and strong,” Greer says, “Penelope is deadlifting over 100 pounds, overhead pressing 40-plus—she’s doing a significant amount of weight for her size and age.” He relies heavily on weight lifting because it is known to increase bone density, help maintain or gain muscle mass, and can correct imbalances in posture. “With weight lifting, you’re actually building up the body. Some cardio training is important too, but it doesn’t affect the body in the same way.” In addition, Greer encouraged her think about nutrition. “She cut out three things—sugar, butter and bread—and dropped 20 pounds of body fat very easily on a small frame,” he says. “And she’s done all this in under a year.” Livingston is surprised how straightforward getting fit was, but says she couldn’t have done it without Greer’s help. It’s all about first making a commitment to yourself and then finding the right person to help you, she says. “You are the only one that can decide you deserve to feel and look healthier right now. I hope I can be helpful to women and encourage them to give it a try. I don’t see myself as an athlete, but as someone who is motivated to enjoy the next chapter of my life. I wish I had come to exercise earlier in my life, but at least I’m here now.”

MALE LIVING SPACES written

by

samantha lund

THE HOW-TO GUIDE FOR DESIGN NEWBIES The concept of “male living spaces” is one of the most influential in 2018 and 2019 interior design culture. Beyond being a recent trending Twitter topic and even more so a topic in magazines like Esquire, GQ and Complex, the trend has some interesting roots in popular culture. Surprisingly, it all started in 1956 when (of all people) Hugh Hefner released photos of his bachelor pad. However you feel about his legacy, Hefner is largely credited with the popularization of single male living spaces and proper interior design. Since then, there has been a subset of men who find their domains an essential part of their persona. In 2017, a study of 1,500 men found that nearly 85 percent were actively involved in the design of their homes. Not only that, but 53 percent of that subset say they spend more money on home goods than on nights out, clothes or new technology. The age of women having domain over design is fading away while men interested in their home’s aesthetic and style are stepping in to give their input.

48 | may 2019 reflections

Interest is one thing, but knowledge and understanding is different. If you have the interest, but don’t know where to start in your male living space, Reflections sat down with Bellevue interior designers to get some helpful tips and tricks for your next design project.

MARIANNE SIMONE, Marianne Simone Design Mariannesimondesign.com Keep things classic and invest in quality pieces. These things will stand the test of time and won’t need to be replaced in a few years when trendy items go out of style. Wallpaper: It’s not just for your grandmother. For masculine spaces, use a geometric pattern or grass cloth on the ceiling. It brings in a nice touch and interest that adds depth and layers to any room. Fabrics: Mix things up with heavy velvet drapery, mohair pillows or upholster a chair or sofa in wool textile to give the room a handsome feel. Paint: Yes to painting cabinets. Men are often fearful of painting wood cabinetry. This is one of the best and least expensive ways to update your tired and dated wood cabinetry. Every room needs something antique or vintage. Rooms should feel collected over time and not look like everything came from the same place. Going to a “big box’ store and buying everything in one place is not doing you any favors. Collect things from your travels. Whether it’s a small piece of art, an interesting object, or attractive hard-covered books to stack on a table, these things tell a story not only about who you are, but where you’ve been. This makes your room more personal and can often be great conversation starters.

If you have a small budget, choose a designer that can accommodate it and a high-end portfolio might not be the best fit. Show up with a file of interior images of things you like, enjoy and are drawn to. Fight the impulse to only think about the flat screen. Consider your views, architectural interest and space when deciding on your priorities. Discuss budget early in the process if you’re working with a designer on your goals. GIRLS RUNNING for GIRLS 52 | may 2019 reflections

people & pl ace s

Last year, member Sophie Sharp created her own fun run and raised $20,000 for Gashora Girls Academy and the Rwanda Girls Initiative, an organization dedicated to the education of young women. Now, at age 15, she is even more enthusiastic about the event and invites all local runners to support her cause. We talked with Sophie about how she became an education and rights activist. written

by

lauren hunsberger

bellevue club may 2019 | 53

I learned from this event that I can make a difference. I am not too small to change the world.

Reflections magazine: When and how did you get into running as a sport? Sophie Sharp: I first got into running with my dad at a really young age. I have always loved it. When I am running, I feel free and at peace. My parents are both runners, so it was in my blood. I began running 8K races at a young age, starting with the Beat the Bridge run in Seattle, and I have continued with this passion through middle school and into high school.

54 | may 2019 reflections

RM: How did you hear about the Rwanda Girls Initiative? SS: Rwanda Girls Initiative (RGI) was started by two mothers at my school—Suzanne Sinegal McGill and Shalisan Foster. I first heard about it in third grade through a presentation they did at St. Thomas School. But at that time, I didn’t realize what a big part of my life RGI would become. I attended the annual auctions with my parents, so we always had a connection. But it wasn’t until my mum and I visited Rwanda and Gashora Girls Academy that I really got involved and found out how passionate I was about girls’ education and women’s rights. I have always been an activist, but this trip helped bring it to light and focus my passion.

RM: Can you describe one of the most impactful moments you had while visiting Rwanda? SS: When I was visiting, my goal was to wave to every person I saw, and to my pleasure, every time they waved back! One day we were driving to our hotel and there was a man with a machine gun standing outside since the president was due to visit. He was very serious and kind of scary looking, and my mum told me not to wave at him. But I did anyway. As soon as I waved, his expression changed, and he lowered his gun and waved and smiled a huge grin. All of a sudden, he was not scary at all. This showed me how happy people are in Rwanda.

SOPHIE SHARP DURING HER FIRST VISIT TO RWANDA.

bellevue club may 2019 | 55

RM: Why did you decide to give your energy to this cause? SS: As soon as I visited Rwanda, my whole world changed. When I got home, I looked at all my shoes. I had so many, most of which I hardly wore, when these kids were walking around barefoot, or with only half a flip-flop or Croc. I decided then and there I had to do something. I didn’t know what that would be, but I knew I had to make a difference.

RM: Do you have any advice for your peers about how to make a difference, whether that’s local or abroad? SS: You can do whatever you set your mind to. It might seem impossible at times, but it isn’t. There is always something you can do. It doesn’t have to be a fun run; just spreading the word can make a difference. You don’t have to do something big to make a difference and affect a community. Raising awareness is a key part to changing the world one person at a time.

RM: Where did the idea to create a 5K come from? SS: My two passions are running and girls’ education, so I decided I would combine them to make something amazing for an impact. I also love our community and knew that putting on a community event would be a great way to bring us all together in a fun way, as well as bring awareness to this great organization.

RM: What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned from creating the event? SS: I learned from this event that I can make a difference. I am not too small to change the world. I have also learned a lot about leadership, speaking in front of large groups, and all the work that goes into planning these events. It doesn’t all happen with the snap of your fingers.

RM: What are your future plans with RGI? SS: I plan to do this fun run every year, and I want to grow the event to be bigger and better. I want to continue to raise awareness of RGI and the benefits of educating girls. My goal is for everyone to know of RGI and to want to help!

RM: Is there anything else you want people to know about RGI or your 5K event? SS: If you ran it last year, we’ve updated the course to make it mostly flat, so it’s a great, fast run. Also, your support can help empower a girl to receive a higher education, thereby changing that girl’s life!

A GIRL (POWER)’S GETAWAY IN HOOD RIVER Beyond the manicures, harnessing the feminine energy of the Columbia Gorge When I first read the invite—Hood River Gals’ Winter Getaway—my mind conjured up the usual suspects: spa treatments, mani-pedis, Pinot Grigio, furry slippers, mojitos, and salads topped with boneless, skinless grilled chicken breast slices (dear lord, please not The Bachelor). Talk about tearing down stereotypes! Hood River’s feminine contingent busted through that dam and carved a whole new meaning to “Girls’ Weekend,” which, thankfully, still included spa treatments. Located about 60 miles east of Portland along the Columbia River, Hood River stretches from the banks of the Columbia, where windsurfers take advantage of the substantial summer breezes, to Mount Hood’s pointy pinnacle some 35 miles to the south. In between lie pear orchards, vineyards and a vibrant little town bursting with art, dining gems, breweries and boutiques. Someone once described Hood River as “the place where Olympic athletes go to retire” and, indeed, there are more than a few rugged athletes around town. There are several great hotel options along the Columbia River, including the modern suites at Columbia Cliff Villas, the historic (maybe haunted) Columbia Gorge Hotel and probably the best-situated Best Western on the planet called the Hood River Inn. But we opted for Hood River Hotel up the hill in town. From the black-andwhite tiles in the lobby to the plaid carpeting in the hallways, this place has personality. And the rooms continued with the eclectic charm—small sinks in the room instead of a bathroom, large blackand-white movie stills adorning the wall, vintage velvet furniture, radiators ticking away in the corner. Two of us arrived a night early; the rest of the women would be joining us the next day. Needing a bite to eat before bed, we walked less than a block to Whiskey Tango for a cocktail and tasty calamari salad. Allegedly, the place packs out on the weekends with live music and is standing room only, but that night it was so peaceful you could hear crickets.

HOOD RIVER HOTEL

The next morning, we connected up with our girl crew and experienced Hood River through the lady lens. Women are showing strong in Hood River’s entrepreneurial sphere. Three blocks west, we stopped in at Melika Swimwear. Hawaiian-born owner Melissa Tokstad (her Hawaiian name is Melika) took us through her Bikini Bar menu—style options include 10 tops and 10 bottoms with an assortment of fabric choices and several reversible. These custom-made suits are

constructed locally and shipped free of charge about three weeks from ordering. I picked up some other great clothing items while I waited for the girls to finish ordering and sipping Naked Winery bubbles. The winery is just down the street and caters to a playful wine crowd. Just consider the wine names: Frisky, Vixen, Cougar, Booty Call Blush, Pounce. This lady crew was probably more inclined toward Wanderlust White than Dominatrix Red, but you never know.

High-energy Ali McLaughlin founded MountNbarreL in 2015, and it has quickly become one of the best wine country tour-experience packages. Guests visiting in May through October can choose a bike or e-bike tour, though the chaser shuttle is always an option for anyone needing to take a break or relax. The Girls Gorge Getaway package includes a two-night hotel stay, private yoga, mini pamper sessions and the MountNbarreL all-inclusive four-hour wine tour with private tastings and lunch. In addition to wineries, McLaughlin pointed out other notable stops including Wilinda Blueberry U-Pick farm. Women winemakers and winery owners abound. With a gorgeous new tasting room on vineyard property that has been in Jill House’s family for more than 100 years, Stave & Stone is a must-stop winery destination. Their tasting experience includes small-bite pairings for each wine—my favorite was the Pinot Gris paired with goat cheese and lavender-pear jam made from estate lavender plants. Down the hill, owner and winemaker Tess Barr of Hood Crest Winery is doing life her way. The wood-beam tasting room exterior feels country rustic, but the glitzy crystal chandeliers strike another tone. Barr plays guitar and sings in her own blues band (the Tess Barr Band)—the gear is set up in the corner, ready for action. Buxom with a throaty voice, a mane of white hair and a string of oversized pearls, Barr has a list of accomplishments that goes well beyond the tasting room. She is a scientist by trade and has filed 125 formula patents (many for skin-care products)—she currently holds 26 patents that have been made into actual products. Oh, and she makes big red wines (because this woman doesn’t do things in a small way).

MELIKA SWIMWEAR & NAKED WINERY MOUNTNBARREL

The next morning, we headed up to Mt. Hood Meadows for some snowy recreation. Half the group snowshoed through the silent winter woods. The other half strapped on some performance skis and carved up a little pow. This girl-power contingent was made up of mothers—a business development director, an experienced climber and all-around outdoor recreation goddess in her 60s, a tourism specialist, and me. The snow was soft that day, the sky blue, and the skiing excellent from the top, where the summit seemed close enough to touch. Two meals stood above the rest. Celilo Restaurant and Bar’s ingredient-driven menu focuses on local farms. “The menu doesn’t dictate what we need in the kitchen,” says Chef Ben Stenn. “We tell the menu what to do.” I was stunned by the perfect bowl of mushroom broth encasing delicate house-made chanterelle ravioli. Up the street and of a much lower brow, Bette’s Place looks like just another greasy spoon diner, yet the breakfasts are anything but ho-hum. From the cinnamon roll to the crab Benedict, everything tasted amazing even if it wasn’t dressed up with fancy plating. I ordered the lemon French toast special, which turned out to be lemon pound cake cooked French-toast style served with lemon curd—it had all the ladies swooning. bellevue club may 2019 | 61

No girls’ getaway would be complete without a spa treatment. Our final act before heading home were facials and massages at Spa Remedease located in the Columbia Gorge Hotel (guests receive discount pricing). Owned independently by Martina Rizzo—self-proclaimed body nerd, health aficionado, movement junkie and farm girl—Spa Remedease offered the perfect ways to ease sore muscles, brighten our complexions, and treat ourselves with that elusive self-care mantra. Before I left town, I made one more stop. We had toured both the Gallery 301, where I looked longingly at paintings by Cathleen Rehfeld and Ted Olson, and the Columbia Center for the Arts, where I decided to treat the women in my life to a set of encaustic bird paintings by artist Janel Pahl. With birthday and Mother’s Day gifts in hand, I left Hood River with an empowering sense of solidarity, connection and inspiration from a group of remarkable women who are directing life in the Columbia Gorge.
