EDITOR’S LETTER
november 2018
IN GENERAL, I’M A FAN OF USING TECHNOLOGY TO ACHIEVE MY WELLNESS GOALS. I have an app to log my running and hiking mileage, and another for meditation. I use Bluetooth in my car to listen to podcasts while in traffic, turning my commute into an educational experience. However, there is one space I find the opposite to be true—that an intentional lack of technology is best for my health and happiness. Five years ago, I decided to make my home a Wi-Fi-free zone. This means no smart speakers or appliances, no constant flow of streaming services, no temptation to sit in front of my computer on the internet. My intention was to spend less time with these things, not more. The result is a markedly calmer, quieter, less chaotic place to live. I’m aware this is an unpopular stance and it’s not possible for everyone, especially those with kids or who work from home. But, I maintain that taking an honest inventory of the ways technology impacts your time at home is a good idea. Limiting certain devices can encourage more time with family and friends, better sleep routines, more physical activity and less unnecessary noise in the household. This is one way I find balance in a world filled with distractions, but there are plenty of others with their own ideas. Read the interview with Nick Huzar, the CEO of OfferUp. He has a lot on his plate with a start-up to run and two kids, and he shares his tips for managing it all on page 56.

FIVE WAYS TO PREVENT TECH NECK: 1. SET TIME LIMITS
Use a timer to remind yourself to get up and move around. According to Chiropractic Economics, the easiest way to treat tech neck is to prevent it all together by taking many breaks. 2. ADJUST YOUR ELECTRONICS
Use a phone dock or tablet holder. A study by Cordyon Physiotherapy on technology and posture suggests your device should always be at eye level, your elbows near your waist and to mainly use your index finger on touch screens. 3. SWITCH UP YOUR OFFICE
TECH NECK
AND HOW TO PREVENT IT There’s a good chance that as you’re reading this article, your head is tilted down, flipping through magazine pages or scrolling through your phone. Chances are, the position you’re currently in is causing unnecessary stress on your neck, back, shoulders and posture in general. It’s a modern physiological effect that doctors are referring to as “tech neck”—and as smartphone use continues to increase, the prevalence of pain and discomfort in our bodies does as well. 28 | november 2018 reflections
Your head weighs between 10 and 11 pounds, on average. However, when it’s flexed forward it becomes a leveraged 50–60 pounds of pressure on our necks, which can’t handle that kind of weight for very long. Tech neck side effects include neck pain, back pain, headaches and pain behind the eyes. To top it off, when you sit with rounded shoulders and a flexed neck, you hinder your ability to take deep breaths, causing your oxygen and energy levels to drop. Think you’ve beaten tech neck? Check for yourself. One of the most prominent signs of tech neck is a deeper wrinkle or two along the neck where the bend happens. Usually it’s more pronounced than other wrinkles on the face or neck and it doesn’t fade quickly when you straighten your neck.
SpineHealth.com recommends a firm chair with head support and to keep your shoulders and head in contact with the chair at all times. Also consider installing a variable height desk and switch between sitting and standing throughout the day. 4. SLEEP ON YOUR BACK
According to a study by the University of Rochester, laying on your back with a small pillow under your knees while you sleep is proven to improve posture. The study also concluded sleeping on your stomach can create more stress on your back and sleeping on your side can pull your spine out of alignment over time. 5. STRETCH AND STRENGTHEN
Neck extensions, side neck stretches, chin tucks, chest lifts, et cetera. Men’s Health suggests stretching and tending to your core muscles every day to prevent slouching while working. written

HOW IT WORKS: THE FITBIT The Fitbit was founded in 2008, and quickly became the 21st-century pedometer, tracking everything from steps to sleep. As the first simple product that transformed the “wearables” industry, Fitbit started a movement by encouraging people to be active using simple technology. But how does it work?
written
by
Fitbit counts your steps using an algorithm that detects unique motion patterns. The patterns need to be big enough to meet the specific threshold of the algorithm, so some steps can go uncounted if walking very softly. When you buy a Fitbit, you’ll be prompted to enter your weight, height, gender, and more, which allows the program to generate calories burned, steps travelled and duration of exercise using a mix of that algorithm and your general information. New to Fitbit is heart rate tracking. Very similar to the pulse touch-trackers you find on a treadmill or elliptical machine, Fitbit’s heart rate monitor (PurePulse) is built into the underside of each bracelet. The pulse tracker, using your general information and the step-counting algorithm, records specific data points along each day or during exercise. By monitoring your heart rate, your Fitbit can graph your peaks, time spent exercising and time spent in a fat-burning state. Fitbit also monitors your day-to-day resting heart rate. Each day, you can monitor your resting heart rate to see if your hard work is paying off and your cardiovascular health is improving over time. 30 | november 2018 reflections

Once Fitbit released PurePulse, it revolutionized several different components of wearable health-tracking technology. Most notably, the sleep tracker. Using the heart rate monitor and motion detectors, Fitbit tracks time spent in each stage of sleep: light, deep and REM. Using that data, compared to data from every other user, the company can recommend more effective times to fall asleep and wake up. More than tracking activity and heart rate, newer Fitbits manage data and help you set goals. In the past, each device used to set a daily goal—10,000 steps for example— and that would be your goal every day until you changed it in the settings. However, new Fitbit devices approach goals differently. Goals are now individualized for each user. By tracking your activity day-to-day, FitBit creates goals based on past movement statistics, encouraging you to beat your past self. If that’s not enough to get you moving, there’s always social networking competitions and tracking to share with your friends.

SEVEN FOODS for
WINTER WELLNESS written
by
lauren hunsberger
Help stave off the winter blues and boost your immune system with these foods harvested during fall and winter seasons.

WINTER SQUASH Winter varietals of squash come in a diversity of shapes, sizes and colors and are extremely versatile. Butternut, acorn, pumpkin, spaghetti and Hubbard squash make the perfect base for soups or you can simply roast them. They provide vital vitamins including A and C, potassium, beta-carotene and manganese.
LEAFY GREENS AND CABBAGES Winter is an especially important time to make sure you’re getting your greens in as they are chock-full of folate and vitamins A, C, E and K. End-of-fall harvests include nutrient-dense vegetables such as kale, Brussels sprouts, chard and cabbage. The USDA cites, “These vegetables also contain an abundance of carotenoids—antioxidants that protect cells and play roles in blocking the early stages of cancer. They also contain high levels of fiber, iron, magnesium, potassium and calcium.”
bellevue club november 2018 | 35
three ROOT VEGETABLES High in fiber, turnips, sweet potatoes, parsnips, carrots and other root vegetables offer a great way to pack in extra vitamins and minerals. Whether you put them through a spiralizer or roast them, the complex carbohydrates will keep you satiated for long periods of time while providing important nutrients like betacarotene.

4. MUSHROOMS Mushrooms add an earthy taste to winter dishes, and the fungi, rich in potassium and known for their antifungal and antibacterial properties, boast many health benefits as well. According to BBC’s Good Food, “They also contain B vitamins as well as a powerful antioxidant called selenium, which helps to support the immune system and prevent damage to cells and tissues.”

FISH Fish does wonders for brain health, a key component to good moods and overall wellness. As the local fishing season wraps up by November, now is the time to make the most of your catch. The Washington State Department of Health recommends, “Eating fish is an important source of omega-3 fatty acids. These essential nutrients keep our heart and brain healthy. . . . Our bodies don’t produce omega-3 fatty acids, so we must get them through the food we eat.” In addition, fish is a good source of minerals such as iron, zinc, iodine, magnesium and potassium.
bellevue club november 2018 | 37
six SEEDS Pound for pound, one of the most nutrient-dense (and often overlooked) foods, seeds such as flax, pumpkin and chia come with a long list of health benefits. Offering fiber to fatty acids, they are one of the most complete foods available. Sourced from many fall veggies, they are a great way to sprinkle added value to any dish with hardly any noticeable flavor.

CINNAMON This common spice makes quite an appearance in coffee shops and bakeries during this time of year, and we are all better off for it. Besides adding a zing of flavor, cinnamon is one of the most potent anti-inflammatories around.

“You eat with your eyes first, and these creations are so pretty.” Mixing science and taste, Bellevue’s newest ice cream boutique is on the forefront of healthy(er), crave-able desserts. This boutique, the brainchild of a former civil engineer, is the first and only nitrogen ice creamery in the Bellevue area.
“This process allows for more creativity. We can try new and interesting flavors one serving at a time,” Dang says. “We’ll have returning customers suggest flavors and we can try them without a lot of commitment or waste.”
Walking up to the creamery, there are rows and rows of glass jars with colorful baked goods, real honey combs and sparkling candy creations. Golden machines that look similar to KitchenAid mixers line the counters pouring out fog like a magical concoction is brewing. Instead, the final result is some of the creamiest ice cream you’ll ever enjoy, finished with any toppings you’d like. This is Fog Rose Ice Cream Boutique.
The process Dang refers to is the use of liquid nitrogen to instantly freeze ice cream, which Fog Rose does one serving at a time, for every order.
After living in California, Fog Rose Owner Quyen Dang recognized the need for more dessert innovation in the Pacific Northwest. Dang attributes the creamery’s success to combining science, locally-sourced organic ingredients and an eye for presentation.
Here’s how it works: Using an ice cream base, with fruit puree or syrup for flavor, all the ingredients are put into a specialized machine. Then, liquid nitrogen is injected into the bowl. Liquid nitrogen is roughly -321 degrees Fahrenheit, and once it comes in contact with the air it quickly evaporates into a cloud of smoke. While the ice cream mixture is freezing, it’s being churned so the very few ice crystals that might form will be broken down. Within seconds, the liquid nitrogen is gone and you’re left with some of the smoothest ice cream you’ve ever had.

Everything at Fog Rose is made to order, and within minutes in front of you. This technology not only lets Dang get creative with flavors instantly, but it also means none of the ice creams contain preservatives. “We work with local ingredients so everything you’ll try will be in season from local farms,” Dang says. “And I work with a local pastry chef who brings fresh toppings all the time.” Some of the most popular flavors at Fog Rose include Pistachio Rosewater, Blueberry Lavender and Quinoa. Though, you never know what will be on the menu any given day.
“I’m working with a pastry chef to test new things all the time,” Dang says. Fog Rose, currently sharing a space in Soma Tower North, is only the beginning of Dang’s vision for innovative desserts in Bellevue. This month, Dang will open her next big endeavor after leaving the corporate world three years ago: Fog Rose Atelier, a cocktail bar featuring more ice cream flavors, desserts and a full-service bar for boozy champagne floats. From there, the possibilities are endless. “It’ll be a place to come and have a late-night treat,” she says. Not to mention, along with being delicious, Dang’s creations are some of the most picture-worthy desserts you’ll ever eat. “You eat with your eyes first, and these creations are so pretty.”

Bellevue Club member Ken Kamada and Brett Campbell combined forces to change the way golf is played and perceived around the world. Ten years ago, Ken Kamada and Brett Campbell met over a round of golf at Willows Run in Redmond. A mutual friend had invited the two to play, and there was an immediate connection. Call it serendipity.
Recalling their connection on the course, Kamada was one of the first people he looked to as a partner. Kamada agreed and moved back to his hometown of Seattle, and they began their mission to give more people access to the sport they love.
“I thought, ‘I really like this guy,’” Kamada says. However, each was far down his own professional path. At the time, Kamada was managing his investment firm, Kamada Investment Management, and parallel leading venture-backed software start-ups in Silicon Valley. Campbell was focused on Nintex, the automation software company he founded in Australia and brought to the United States.
“Golf isn’t a cheap sport. Plus, it requires time, four or five hours. Some people don’t have one or both of those resources. Other people might live in a place in the world without golf courses,” Kamada says. “Tech can be a great equalizer in having access. With mobile apps and the simulator platform, for a few dollars a month, a lot more people could have an entry point into the game.”
Fast-forward to 2018. Campbell sold Nintex and started spending more time working on his golf game. “I was focused on it for a few years and got my handicap down from 30 to 10,” he says. In the process, he met Randy Henry, a prominent golf instructor who founded Henry Griffitts, the first golf club fitting company. The friendship ignited a conversation about the future of the sport and the intersection between golf and technology. In a short time, Campbell founded Overload Golf Ventures, an arm of Harvey Partners, a home office based in Kirkland. Overload invests in golf-based software start-ups, and most recently acquired aboutGolf and Henry Griffitts. Currently, aboutGolf is the official provider of simulators for the PGA Tour and the Golf Channel, with over 3,000 simulator and software platforms used everywhere from Korea to London. But Campbell believes there is still a lot of room for growth and innovation.

“Imagine you’re watching the Masters on TV and you say, ‘I’d like to see how I do on that exact course against those players.”
With a focus on software development (as opposed to hardware) and an increased use of artificial intelligence and machine learning, the two see potential everywhere. Yes, there will be a big focus on performance training. But it’s the modernized experience of connecting golfers globally through a platform that excites them most. After all, that’s what brought them together in the first place. “Imagine you’re watching the Masters on TV and you say, ‘I’d like to see how I do on that exact course against those players.’ We want to be able to download the course right then and play with them, or compete against a friend on the course,” Campbell says. “I don’t get to see my father a lot; he lives in Japan,” Kamada says. “So, I love the idea of being able to play a round of golf against him using our technology.” They are also working toward including interactive bar games—darts, shooting games, cornhole—and possibly other sports like baseball and car racing. Admittedly, the ideas are endless, but their focus is simply to excite people about coming together over sport, whether that’s in a pro shop, bar or a private home setting. “In high school, golf was something to spend time with my dad, and it was so unique because it’s an opportunity to lock someone down for four or five hours and spend quality time with them,” Kamada says. “It meant a lot to me.” And that’s the feeling the two want to spread to golfers of all ages.

ON SEVENTH AVENUE IN SEATTLE, AMID HOTELS, CORPORATE OFFICES AND RESTAURANTS SITS AN URBAN ARBORETUM CALLED THE SPHERES.
Entering the Spheres, guests are first greeted by a 55-foot-tall “living wall” of plants. The temperature is consistently level at 70 degrees, water is flowing in each corner to assist with noise cancellation, and plants from around the world are thriving alongside cafes, workplaces and sitting areas. The plants line each workstation, organized into a number of collections. Each collection provides green spaces for employees and their visitors to learn and be curious. Vivariums (living wall / aquarium hybrids) feature freshwater critters in seminatural conditions while other wall installations exhibit colorful succulents growing along the edges.
bellevue club november 2018 | 51
High up on the fourth floor, pitcher plants having carnivorous leaves filled with water and enzymes to digest their prey live on the walls. Not too far away is a canopy walk that oversees the forest below. Walking through each floor, rare plants from across the world thrive and grow in beautiful shades of every color. Malaysian golden orchids are blooming, nearby is the bright pink Passiflora antioquiensis (the Colombian cousin of passionfruit), and staghorn ferns grow on the sides of trees, looking like giant green antlers. The Spheres, a project created by Amazon, were inspired by the concept of “biophilia,” which is the hypothesis that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life. Amazon created The Spheres as an experiment to improve productivity and employees’ work-life balance. It stands as a testament to employee wellness. Each inch of the structure was designed with a work-life wellness balance in mind. The climate-controlled structure sits at 60 percent humidity, which is perfect for plants and also safe for computers, cell phones and other electronics. Amazon also hosts an Expressions Lab in the Spheres, where
52 | november 2018 reflections
employees create art projects using plants and natural elements. Amazon also works with urban gardening projects, cooking classes and plant camps for kids. “The Spheres informally impacted company culture,” Amazon spokesperson John Sa says. “People are inclined to do plant-themed things like terrarium building or plant-themed painting activities.” The technology behind the structures is impressive: a steel pentagonal hexecontahedron structure forms the frame, with 2,643 panes of ultra-sheer and energy-efficient glass completing the walls. Once the structure was finished, after four years of planning and construction, it still needed to be filled with plants. The biggest tree stands 49 feet tall and 22 feet wide, weighing nearly 36,000 pounds. The tree, named Rubi, made a 1,200-mile cross-country journey to its final destination. Because of its size, the top of the Seventh Avenue sphere was removed and the tree was craned in through the top of the building. The only thing arguably more impressive than the technology behind the Spheres is the benefits to employee production and wellness.
THE ONLY THING ARGUABLY MORE IMPRESSIVE THAN THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND THE SPHERES IS THE BENEFITS TO EMPLOYEE PRODUCTION AND WELLNESS.

Studies show plants provide important benefits in workspaces, referring back to the principle of biophilia. People who work indoors complete tasks 12 percent faster when they have plants in their line of vision, compared to people who work without plants in the room, according to a study done by Washington State University. With the addition of plants to the workplace, there is a reduction of health complaints (coughing, fatigue, etc.) among office workers. Other health benefits include lower blood pressure and stress reduction with visual exposure to plants. Workspace landscaping goes far beyond health benefits. Plants also reduce noise levels by absorbing sounds (rather than insulating against noise pollution). They can also boost creativity by up to 15 percent. Landscaping and office greenery can even affect the way potential employees feel about your space, according to the 2015 Human Spaces report by psychology professor Sir Cary Cooper: “The benefit of design inspired by nature, known as biophilic design, is accumulating evidence at a rapid pace. . . . A third of us say that workplace design would affect our decision to join a company. The Spheres are closed to the public during weekdays and are reserved specifically for employees and their guests, truly making it a work-centered environment in the middle of a greenhouse. The Spheres are open two Saturdays each month for public tours to inspire creativity, wellness and education for everyone. Not all workplaces can build a functioning greenhouseturned-workspace, but adding greenery into your office might be just the thing you need for that boost of creativity at work.

NINE LIFE LESSONS FROM NICK HUZAR, CEO OF OFFERUP
56 | november 2018 reflections
bellevue club november 2018 | 57
58 | november 2018 reflections
Bellevue Club member Nick Huzar founded OfferUp, the largest mobile marketplace in the country. He’s also a dad of two young kids and an exercise enthusiast who is committed to getting in the gym at least five days a week. How does he manage it? He let us in on a few of the secrets to keeping his life in balance. ON WELLNESS ROUTINES
My office schedule can change at a moment’s notice, but my workout routine is steadfast. I dedicate time every morning for the gym and spend most of it doing high intensity cardio and strength training. I’m at the club with my family a bunch as well. My wife enjoys playing tennis and my kids swim on Saturdays, so I’m active then too. ON MAKING TIME
In the early days of OfferUp I was in the office writing a lot of code for our app, so there’d be 100 hourplus work weeks with a lot of hunching over a bright screen in a dark office. I wasn’t able to work out regularly and it was hard to have time to refresh my mind. This is the typical story for most start-ups because it takes a lot of time and dedication to bring your dreams to fruition. To prevent an eventual burnout, I made a commitment to myself to schedule time for working out and getting active. I feel healthier than ever, and the only potential burnout now is in the weight room. ON DECLUTTERING
Americans spend trillions of dollars each year on new stuff, billions each year on storage units, and every day, they throw a lot of these things away. We have too much stuff. The reason I started OfferUp [in 2011] is because my house was full of things that we no longer needed, as my wife and I were expecting our daughter. I needed an easy solution for clearing it out, but there wasn’t one. I thought there must be a lot of people like me because it was a simple timevalue question. How can this be done easier? And why can’t I sell something with just a simple photo from my phone?
bellevue club november 2018 | 59
ON WELLNESS IN THE OFFICE
I think about how we can set aside more time to be active at OfferUp as well. And not even just physically active. We think about how to make people’s day-to-day easier. One thing we do is live in the product. All the decorations, tables, chairs, and art in [the office] is from OfferUp. The second thing we do is foster an open office environment. We bring people together for open dialogue every week during free-lunch Fridays, where the whole company gets together and hangs out. We are always finding excuses for bringing people together because we want to develop our people as a whole and keep work fun. They’re our most important asset. ON THE FUTURE
We’ve come a long way from being a small team with a dream, working together in a garage. I’m excited because we’re the largest mobile marketplace in the country, and now people have a better option for buying and selling online. Happy customers make me happy. But when I think about the future, I feel like we still have an immense opportunity in front of us. We’re like Amazon when it was still in its selling book phase. We’re not even close to where I think we can go. We want to be a household name and an experience people use in their daily lives to engage with their community.
EMPLOYEES CAN SEND EACH OTHER NOTES AND GIFTS THROUGH THE INTER-OFFICE MAILBOX SYSTEM.
60 | november 2018 reflections
ON MINIMALISM
Because of OfferUp, I’ve become a minimalist. My wife is happy because I was able to clean out “the room full of stuff,” and now I have a son and a daughter who also need a lot of things at different stages—newborn, infant, toddler. Everything we buy is from OfferUp. I buy their toys, their bikes, and some of their clothes, like winter jackets, on OfferUp. When they’re done or have outgrown it, we resell, giving these items a new life. ON TIME MANAGEMENT
My best advice is to get organized and be very regimented about how you organize your time. Building a start-up is a marathon, and you’ve got to build the muscle for it. I add little tricks into my schedule to make sure I’m ready for the next day. For example, when I go home tonight, the first thing I’ll do is pack for the gym tomorrow. Building routine eliminates excuses. You have to build good habits and be thoughtful with your time. Oh, and definitely allocate time for yourself; it won’t be anyone else’s priority but your own, and it’s important.
bellevue club november 2018 | 61
ON IMPROVING OTHERS’ LIVES
The impact I hear from our customers never ceases to amaze me. I spoke to a woman the other day who told me an inspirational story. Her husband died a year ago in a car accident. On her way to a meeting, she got into a car accident, literally 365 days after her husband died. She’s fine, but she says OfferUp was important to her because her husband was the breadwinner. She started selling things on OfferUp just as a way to make ends meet. She then started finding things in markets and secondhand stores around town, and now that’s her primary income. We’ve heard so many stories like that, where people fall on hard times and can turn to OfferUp to support themselves. It goes beyond my original vision for the company and is inspiring.
HUZAR SAYS ORGANIZATION IS THE KEY TO WORK-LIFE BALANCE.
62 | november 2018 reflections
ON TRUE HAPPINESS
For me, it’s the customer and employee stories that make me feel good. Business and financial success are great, but the dream, and true test for OfferUp, is when we can all connect and prosper together.

AUSTIN ITSELF OFFERS PLENTY TO DO, BUT IF YOU’VE GOT SOME EXTRA TIME, UNPLUG WITH ONE OF THESE DAY TRIPS: FREDERICKSBURG
A charming community in Texas Hill Country, Fredericksburg is known for its German flavor, growing wine region, cute boutiques and rolling country roads, perfect for cycling. Grab a Caribbean-inspired lunch of mahi-mahi tacos and fries piled with pulled pork at Tubby’s Ice House, then walk across the street to the National Museum of the Pacific War. You could easily spend the entire day at the only institution in the U.S. dedicated exclusively to telling the story of the Pacific theater in World War II, but you might want to leave a little time to explore the shops of Main Street, go wine tasting, hike Enchanted Rock or stroll through the gardens at Wildseed Farms. Cap off your day with dinner at Otto’s, serving gourmet German fare like duck schnitzel and flammkuchen, a flatbread/pizza hybrid. Time from Austin: 1 hour, 30 minutes

NEW BRAUNFELS
Water is a big attraction in New Braunfels, a small town founded by German settlers, and you’ve got options when it comes to enjoying it. Tubing is a popular pastime here, on both the Guadalupe River (which also offers year-round fishing) and the Comal River (with a water temperature of 70–72 degrees). If you’re hoping to stay dryer, paddleboarding and canoeing are available at Landa Park. More wet-and-wild adventures await at Schlitterbahn, widely considered the mecca of water parks. Scream your way through the six-story-tall Master Blaster uphill water coaster and try to surf the Boogie Bahn, with 50,000 gallons of water raging a minute. Time from Austin: 50 minutes bellevue club november 2018 | 65
WACO
In recent years, college town Waco has become known as the home of Magnolia Market, a two-block shopping complex from Chip and Joanna Gaines of Fixer Upper. People come from miles around to get a little home décor inspiration—plus there’s a garden shop, a bakery serving Joanna’s personal recipes, food trucks and lawn games for families. But before there was HGTV, there was Dr Pepper, created in 1885 in Waco. How it got the name, no one knows for sure, but you can explore the theories at the Dr Pepper Museum, dedicated to the country’s oldest major soft drink. Be sure to stop by Frosty’s Soda Shop on your way out for a sweet, effervescent treat. Time from Austin: 1 hour, 45 minutes

WIMBERLEY
This small town of less than 3,000 packs plenty of outdoor recreation. Cool off at artesian spring Jacob’s Well, a popular swimming destination (from May 1 to October 1) that’s 68 degrees year-round. On Saturdays at 9 a.m., a master naturalist covers the history of the well and the wildlife that live in the surrounding habitat. For more swimming, Blue Hole is another refreshing, spring-fed spot—just be sure to make reservations online first to ensure your chance to splash around. Then get a bird’s-eye view of canyons and creeks as you soar over Texas Hill Country at Wimberley Zipline Adventures. You’ll zoom at speeds north of 30 mph as you experience the 10 lines, ranging from 150 to 900 feet. Before heading back, stop by Bella Vista Ranch to sample fresh-pressed olive oil. Time from Austin: 1 hour, 15 minutes JOHNSON CITY
Step back into the 1960s on a tour of the Texas White House, where Lyndon B. Johnson spent nearly a quarter of his time during his presidency. On a guided tour, you’ll see firsthand LBJ’s love of electronics and learn about some of his quirks—for example, he required extremely high water pressure and took a nap almost every afternoon. The house is in the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, which is also a working ranch, with antique cattle that are descended from Johnson’s time, shorter and stockier than the cows of today. For even more about the 36th president, visit the nearby Lyndon B. Johnson State Park & Historic Site, where a visitor center contains memorabilia from his years in office. Here, the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farmstead gives visitors an authentic look at Texas pioneer life in the 19th century, as interpreters in period costume carry out the day-to-day chores of running a farm in this long-ago era. Time from Austin: 1 hour
