HOURS OF OPERATION
When walking the halls of the Bellevue Club, it’s easy to see the membership is made up of high-caliber athletes. But this issue taught me something important: we also have an abundance of artists. You may not notice them because they don’t carry around their paint brushes or fabric swatches, but there is a host of skilled creatives, including photographers, painters, writers, fashion designers and more. In honor of all this talent, we decided to highlight as many of our artists as possible. Members like Susan Walker (page 32) and Beth Herrild (page 44) represent the fine arts. Susan is a painter who found her way to the canvas while making a transition into a second career. Beth is spreading the benefits of creativity through her unique craft-based subscription box. For a peek into the local fashion scene, get to know Matthew Klutznick. He is a newer member who has already made a big impact on Bellevue in his two years here. This month he is launching the Bravern Fashion Week, an event that celebrates high fashion and all the arts. You can read more about that story on page 60. To round out the issue, we featured many other ways you can enjoy the arts in the greater Seattle area. I hope it inspires you to add a little color into your life.

Bellevue-based DreamBox Learning, a digital math program for elementary- and middle-school aged students, has secured a $130 million investment from The Rise Fund, DreamBox announced in August. The investment will allow DreamBox, which currently serves 3 million students and over 100,000 teachers, to “further accelerate growth and innovation” across North America, according to a news release. Beyond the enhanced footprint, the investment is designed to allow the company to continue product development and expand business operations.

BOTTLE TALK
Named “Cocktail of the Year” by the New York Times, this drink, born in the 1880s, is enjoying a revival in the culinary limelight.
Add some sparkle to the last days of summer with a classic—the spritz. Traditionally, a spritz is an Italian wine-based cocktail made with prosecco, a bitter liqueur (such as Aperol or Cynar) and sparkling soda water. These days, the aperitif appears in many variations and can be modified to suit your taste or dinner menu. Stop by Cosmos to sip our Specialty Spritz or make your own with these suggested recipes.
APEROL SPRITZ
Single serving 2 ounces prosecco 1¼ ounces Aperol Splash of club soda Add an orange peel and serve over ice.
GINGER-LIME SPRITZ

Reflections magazine: When did you decide to be an artist? Susan Walker: I was born and raised in California, and I went to college [at the University of California, Davis], where I got my bachelor’s in studio art. RM: When did you decide to make art your career? SW: Toward the end of college, I knew the options were to go into commercial art or teaching. I decided to be a high school art teacher, and that eventually morphed into a 20-year career as a school principal. In my late 50s, about 10 years ago, my husband and I were sharing a bottle of wine, and I was talking about doing art. He said, “That’s all you ever talk about, just do it.” I knew I needed to jump on the moment before I got too scared. RM: What was that journey like? SW: The first challenge was to figure out if my dream still had legs. I went to the UW [University of Washington] for two years to recalibrate my skill set and build up my confidence.

The French Lady
RM: How did having a community at UW affect your growth as an artist? SW: It was everything because there was so much fear. I was rewiring my life. I wanted the challenge of doing something new, so the group, which I called the Community of Learners, was so important because we all supported each other with challenges, especially in showing and pricing. RM: What’s your unique process for creating a painting? SW: Most of my work starts with reference photos that I take myself. I’m always looking for a moment to capture. For example, one of my favorite paintings started with a photo I took while waiting for the Ballard Bridge [to open and close]. I was the first person in the line and saw it rising up. I’ve also done a lot of bars and restaurants and Northwest water scenes. I’ve always got my camera with me. Then I pick an image and paint it on canvas I stretch myself. RM: Do you consider yourself exclusively a Pacific Northwest artist? SW: Yes, I think Seattle is where it’s at for me. My sister lives in Napa, and I’ve painted a few scenes from there. But there’s something about the Northwest. It’s not just capturing scenery but the emotion I feel at the time. If somebody buys a painting, they are buying a source of energy, something that will feed them. bellevue club september 2018 | 35

RM: Do you have any advice for someone considering a major life or career change? SW: For me, taking a leap was a great thing. It’s not for everyone, but if someone wants to take a similar jump, the reward in terms of learning is huge. I feel like all my antennae are up; every intellectual and emotional sense is alert. I feel so fully alive having made this change into a non-verbal medium of expression. As a school principal, I used verbal and problem-solving skills all the time. That’s what the job was, and now I have to express myself differently. RM: How did your previous career help you with your career as an artist? SW: It definitely helped with the showing and business side. I’m so glad I had the business side of being principal—managing a budget, learning to communicate and work with people. I was shy in college, and that alone would have been a stumbling block if I would have tried it at that time. As a mature adult, I have a whole wealth of skills. oving from Arizona to New York, now living in Tacoma and teaching art, Becky Frehse doesn’t have a natural connection to Bellevue. Unless you seek out Washington artists and their works, you might never get to see her large, multimedia installations. Luckily, there’s a local group working constantly bring new artists, like Frehse, to your daily commute. “Storefronts” turns empty storefronts into art installations across Bellevue, Seattle and Tacoma. “I think of my installations as entertainment for passersby. I try to make them colorful and active to catch people's attention,” Frehse says. “The benefit to Storefront artists, in general, is a new audience for their work. Bellevue is a brand-new neighborhood for me.” Storefronts not only puts artists’ works in front of an otherwise unreachable audience, but also it plays a big role in changing the way residents interact with art. “I hope these installations allow people a moment to feel present with themselves and allow their minds to wander beyond the daily grind of getting from point A to B,” says Hanako O’Leary, program coordinator at Storefronts. Storefronts is a division of Shunpike, a local company that provides resources and opportunities to local artists. The Storefronts Seattle project is a big part of that overall mission: connecting up-and-coming artists with space to display their craft. O’Leary was one of those artists. She began her Storefronts journey with an installation in South Lake Union.

“Just like with architecture, public art establishes and reveals the character of an urban space,” O’Leary says. “I was struck by the importance of this program, which provided an opportunity for emerging artists to show their work in highly visible, civic spaces.” After working with the organization for just over a year, O’Leary has worked with 36 artists and continues to be amazed at the range, styles and different lifestyles that artists bring. Frehse has worked with O’Leary and Storefronts before, her first installation, inspired by music, was displayed in Tacoma. The former Peace Corps volunteer and University of Puget Sound Professor admits she doesn’t play music, but interprets the phrases from classical music into colors, patterns and shapes for her art. Her work has since grown from canvas pieces into larger, multimedia installations that usually involve pieces of instruments. “I wanted to go beyond the flat of the canvas and began joining actual musical instruments to wood panels or painting the instruments themselves,” Frehse says “Lots of people donate their old, unplayable instruments for me to reconfigure in my work.”
bellevue club september 2018 | 41
It’s artists like Frehse that inspire O’Leary to keep the work going and add more installations every six months. “I was struck by the importance of this program, which provided an opportunity for emerging artists like myself and so many others to show their work in highly visible, civic spaces,” O’Leary says. “Not only does it give artists an opportunity to see their work come alive in a whole new context, it creates an opportunity for us to share our art with folks who don't frequent museums or galleries.” Find new, local and emerging artists any time at the Storefronts locations in Meydenbauer Center. The current displays will be up through September before making way for new installations. To learn more about Storefronts, visit storefrontsseattle.com, and to learn more about Becky Frehse and her installations, visit beckyfrehse.com.
There are two installations currently showing in Bellevue sponsored by the Meydenbauer Center, Bike Date by Laura Curry and Ensembles by Becky Frehse. Ensembles is a mixed-media installation that features boisterous acrylic paintings, reconfigured musical instruments, tree branches as musicians, and whimsical ceramic parts in two tableaux referencing birds in a “green scherzo” and a raucous band of makeshift instrumentation. Frehse's juxtaposition of objects within a framed display window invites the viewer to experience her visual interpretations of waggish musical ideas. Bike Date is a research-based project that documents the experiences of cyclists while on the road. For Storefronts, Curry uncovers the drama—and romance—and intrigue of the cycling experience that is typically invisible. At undisclosed times during its six-month instillation, dialogues, comments and pieces will be added to the project as if it’s unfolding in front of the audience. “People could describe my work as personal in that it connects with the audience deeply,” Curry says. “And, perhaps that my art practice utilizes whatever materials or methods interest me and are necessary for my work.” To learn more about Laura Curry, visit lauracurry.com.

Beth Herrild worries the majority of people (especially school-age kids) suffer from a lack of art in their lives. So she decided to do something about it. In October of 2016, the mother of three created Outside the Box Creation, a monthly subscription box that is packed with all the high-quality tools necessary to learn a new fine arts technique and complete a project using them. “Art helps develop confidence and creativity in kids. Empathy is also a big thing. They learn to see there’s not just one solution to a problem, so they see different points of view,” Herrild says.
From painting with watercolors to mono printing, Herrild relies on her fine arts degree and experience as a longtime art docent with the Issaquah School District to pick the lessons and activities. In addition to the art supplies, each box comes with a picture book that is connected to the theme of the activity.
“The play value is long with these boxes because it teaches kids a valuable technique they can do over and over. It’s not a onetime craft because there are often supplies left over,” Herrild says.

BETH HERRILD
Herrild says kids aren’t the only ones who can benefit from adding art to their lives. “I have quite a few customers who sit down and do them as a family.” She also created an adult version that comes with suggested food recipes, wine pairings and cocktail napkins. They are called Art with Friends boxes, and there are several different projects to choose from, think Date Night in a Box, Girls’ Night in a Box and Mother-Daughter Time. “I’ve found that a lot of adults have negative self-talk when it comes to art. They tell themselves they aren’t creative,” Herrild says. So she provides just the right amount of instruction and inspiration to get the wheels turning. Taking her passion to share art to an even higher level, shortly after launching the company, Herrild decided to donate boxes to the Washington Corrections Center for Women in Gig Harbor. “I taught a [non art-related] class at the women’s prison in Gig Harbor, and it was an amazing experience. The conversations we had were so impactful,” Herrild says. “When moms are in jail and kids come to visit, we found they often run out of things to say to one another after a few minutes. So having a box gives them something to do together. It’s good for the women to do something creative and good for the children because they get to take something home with them.” Currently, for every 12 subscriptions (or a one-year subscription), Herrild gives one box to WCCW. In addition, for every three Art with Friends boxes purchased, she gives one box to the prison.

a lifetime of changes More than three decades ago, Marge Rung was out for a run when she had an idea—she would revolutionize the way women bought workout clothes. Since, she’s been around the world a few times and created an empire in the process.
When Marge Rung first had the idea to open up a women’s athletic apparel store in downtown Edmonds in the 1980s, she says women didn’t have a strong presence in gyms. She found that, like her, they jogged, skied or played tennis, but seldom went to big athletic facilities. So it is not surprising they didn’t have a place to buy fitness clothing—especially pieces that made them feel good. “Women were in the infancy of body awareness then and just starting to feel confident in workout clothing,” Rung says. “I wanted to give them a new experience, something that made them feel feminine but also confident. It was a whole new world.” The store she opened was called Changes, and it was the precursor to the boutique located by the athletic entrance of the Bellevue Club.

FASHION ROOTS
Fashion was always a staple of Rung’s life. She grew up in Spokane and spent a lot of time with her five great-aunts, three of which were ingrained in the international fashion scene. Initially a schoolteacher, she made a career change at 40 years old, diving headfirst into the fashion industry, and never looked back. “I started the first store with nothing, and it grew slowly; every line I bought was on credit card only. It slowly evolved, and I eventually opened another store in Bell Place,” she says. In 1985, she saw an opportunity to bring her concept to the Bellevue Club and seized it. In the early phases, the store featured mainly tennis apparel. But as it (and her other stores) grew, she saw the potential for more and sourced high-fashion lines, giving women a one-stop shop for all their looks. At her busiest, Rung had five Changes stores in the area. However, the store at the Club eventually became her sole focus. “When I opened at the Club, I wanted to fit the image of the premier Eastside club. It was a perfect match,” Rung says. “And now the store feels like a community; it feels like family because I’ve had some customers for years and years.” Since, she has expanded to men’s fashion and says it’s one of the fastest-growing sections of the store. “I’ve seen a huge change in men’s approach to clothing. This generation cares a lot more. They love fashion, they are working out hard and they want something that complements their bodies,” Rung says. GOOD STYLE LASTS Marge is wearing her grandfather’s hat, originally made by the Knox company in 1890 in New York.

MARGE’S FASHION FORECASTING
Denim will never die. But the thrashed-up jeans and everything falling off the body look is gone. The upcoming trend with denim is a clean hem and clean, straight-cut pant. • Beautiful, feminine dresses are everywhere in Europe right now. • The cold-shoulder look is also fading. People are going for a cleaner, more tailored look, getting back to selections like classic cashmere coats. • Shoes will become more practical. There’s still a time and place for stilettos, but everyday wear is leaning toward good, comfortable, fashionable shoes.

CURATING STYLE
Rung is easily recognizable in her signature black-rimmed glasses and short blond pixie cut; she describes her personal style as “classic but edgy, and a little rocker.” She also loves taking risks with her look, and says at 72 years old, she doesn’t shy away from anything that makes her feel good. She infuses a little of her rock ’n’ roll personality into the store with brands like Kupu-Kupu (a jewelry line designed by her own daughter, Beth), but says a lot of her style influence comes from traveling. From Barcelona to Tibet, Rung is constantly on the go, looking for inspiration all over the world. “I travel to Europe often, and when I go, I watch what women are wearing because they are usually five years ahead of us,” Rung says. “Then I slowly introduce what I see there. And I need to do that because our women travel. Our customers are smart, sophisticated buyers, so we have to be on their level.” In terms of workout clothing, Rung still has her finger on the pulse as well. She currently works out six times a week, with Pilates being her go-to activity. The trend she finds interesting in that realm is the move toward more sustainable fashion, with natural fibers like bamboo being used more frequently. “When I started, women were wearing white tights with thong leotards that laced up the back with a bow and wristbands and leg warmers,” she says. “It’s been a great progression since then and fascinating to watch all the steps in between.” The sentiment of progression, she says, also applies to herself as a business owner and to many of the strong women she keeps around her, including her two daughters and the staff at Changes. “I admire women of any age rocking it hard, women that have worked to build a career or business and own their own lives,” Rung says. “Those are the women I admire most.”

ART FEATURE
Meet the artists behind the Laser Dome at the Pacific Science Center.
bellevue club september 2018 | 55
is the creative outcome of any culture, and in return, that culture often mirrors that art. It’s no wonder that quirky, overly caffeinated and music-obsessed Seattle is home to world-renowned laser artists. The Pacific Science Center houses the largest and longestoperating laser dome in the world. Combining lasers and music is all-together epic and brilliant, but what the audience doesn’t realize is that behind the dome are the laser artists (or “laserists”) responsible for it all. “Most domes around the country pre-set their shows to run in a queue along with the music,” says Chris Harris, Laser Theater Supervisor. “Here, our artists are more like DJs; they improvise every show and literally create it as you’re sitting there watching.”
56 | september 2018 reflections
HOW EXACTLY DOES BEING A LASER ARTIST WORK? The Science Center’s team of five artists begin by thinking about the audience. Who comes regularly, and what do they want to see? Also, who doesn’t come to laser shows and how to draw that crowd? “We have something very special here because we live in Seattle,” Harris says. “We aren’t appealing to people in Kansas City. This is a music-centric culture that resonates well with laser shows.” Recently, the laserists decided to try their hand in something new: Laser Beyoncé. “We realized we were getting the same crowd over and over,” Harris says. “We were getting every follower of Pink Floyd, of course, but almost no women. So we put our heads together and decided: Beyoncé!” The new show changed audiences and there were more women enjoying laser art than ever before. However, before that could happen, the team had to reimagine laser art for their new audience. To begin, the laser DJs develop a playlist. Each show is about 45 minutes to an hour, and within that time the music has to get more energetic to keep the audience involved.
bellevue club september 2018 | 57
“What we do here is more advanced than almost any other laser show.”
After listening to the playlist and digesting the tone and rhythms, the laserists begin creating. They start blocking out colors, shapes and beats that speak to the music. They take notes and keep a rough programming of certain shapes and colors they’d like to use. Harris does a “background” for every show. Like the background scenery of a painting, Harris gives each show a few laser background beats that play behind the improvised lasers so the DJs can focus on the main show. For every show, laser artists sit in a booth in the back of the dome and project images and shapes to the beat of the music. The artists use computer programs to monitor the beat and a switchboard similar to one found in a DJ booth to create the show. HOW DO YOU BECOME A LASER ARTIST? Harris walks around the booth, talking about the aircooled, three-watt laser, 10-laser projector like a science that he knows better than anyone. Harris was just involved in a massive update to the dome, overseeing the newest in LED technology installations that are diode-based to eliminate the use of gas and make the entire dome environmentally friendly. “Surprisingly enough, I just answered an ad on Craigslist,” Harris says. “That’s actually how we’ve filled most of these positions; then it’s all hands-on training.” Just like any artist, there’s a level of natural skill and instinct when it comes to laser art. Most of the laserists that work at the Science Center love music and art, and have a vision and style uniquely theirs.
58 | september 2018 reflections
“What we do here is more advanced than almost any other laser show,” Harris says. “There’s more creativity involved. After learning and working here, our artists can go perform lasers on tour with musicians and it would be less intensive.” WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR NEXT SHOW The Science Center’s laserists are always looking for new genres, musicians and styles to feature. The dome plays everything from Michael Jackson to Cardi B—the midnight Kendrick Lamar slot is Harris’s personal favorite. This fall, the dome will do their very first K-pop feature as a limited engagement as well as several experimental shows to test new content. If you’re looking for something different, the laser dome also features local DJs and bands on special occasions to give people unusual concert experiences. “We’re always looking for new, creative ways to use the dome,” Harris says as he walks to the front doors and announces the Michael Jackson show beginning shortly. From there, laser artist “Jojo” steps into the booth and lowers the lights. For the next 45 minutes, it’s just the audience, Michael Jackson and laser projections lighting up to the beat of “Billie Jean.”

This September marks the inaugural Bravern Fashion Week. Created by Bellevue Club member and General Manager of The Shops at The Bravern Matthew Klutznick, the event includes a runway show, expert discussion panel and many fashionable soirees. Klutznick sat down with Reflections to talk about the how the event came to be and what the Eastside community can expect.
bellevue club september 2018 | 61
Reflections magazine: What drew you to the Bravern and luxury retail? Matthew Klutznick: I love fashion—the design, textiles, everything—so the Bravern is a dream come true. It is one of three or four facilities in the U.S. with these types of stores—the most iconic luxury retail brands on the planet. They typically don’t go into shopping centers.
RM: How would you describe your own style? MK: Classic. I’m always going to be the guy in a suit and tie. Growing up, my parents were very fashionable. I remember them getting dressed up to go out, and it made me appreciate clothes from an early age. Society has become so casual, and my thought is: just because you can wear shorts to a restaurant on a Saturday night doesn’t mean you should.
RM: What does fashion bring to your life? MK: For me personally, it’s art. It’s how people express themselves. For some people, that’s music. For others, it’s the car they drive. For a lot of people, it’s the clothes they wear. I find that interesting.
RM: Who are your go-to designers? MK: I wear Zegna suits, Ferragamo shoes, usually Louis Vuitton for accessories and Hugo Boss. There are just some designers that really fit me well.
62 | september 2018 reflections
RM: What’s your best piece of style advice? MK: Celebrate life, it’s short. Always look your best and take pride in how you dress. I know people who buy expensive items and then never wear them. I don’t understand that. Wear the nice things you enjoy, and don’t be afraid to get dressed up. RM: What was the impetus for Bravern Fashion Week? MK: I have been in the shopping center industry for 31 years, and living in Chicago before Bellevue, I had never heard of the Bravern. You could name any state and I could tell you the shopping centers in that state and where to go. So I realized there was a real struggle with awareness. RM: Why do you think that is? MK: I don’t know. Possibly, luxury fashion isn’t a priority in the market. Places like New York and L.A., there is more emphasis on fashion. Here, people are more likely to be outdoors, so we needed to create a signature event.
bellevue club september 2018 | 63
RM: What does that event look like? MK: It’s not just a runway show; it’s a whole fashion week to highlight our retailers. The art component is to bring in the community. We held a design challenge for local students, and there’s a panel discussion with myself, Richard Samuelson, Vice President/General Manager of Neiman Marcus, and David Blackham, President of David Lawrence. RM: Why did you decide to get local students involved with a design contest? MK: I went to Seattle Fashion Week, and met some young designers from The Art Institute of Seattle, and they are so passionate. As a shopping center, we receive so much from the community, and there’s an obligation to give back. I wanted to help these incredible young people. We challenged them to design an exclusive tote bag, and in return they get exposure and $1,000. And, I have to say, I love the winning design. They really nailed it. The Bravern Fashion Week takes place from September 14-16, 2018. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit bravernfashionweek.com.
