How Part-time Studies Works at BCIT Register for a Course

Course Cancellations and Changes

To take most courses or start many of the programs offered through Part-time Studies, you can simply pick the courses you want to take, register, and then pay your fees. However, some courses may require departmental approval before you can register. Check the program’s web page for complete details.

The content of the Winter 2013 Part-time Studies catalogue is current at the time of publishing. However, as program and course information is subject to change, BCIT reserves the right to cancel or postpone any Part-time Studies offerings without notice.

Apply to a Program and Earn a Credential

Fees, Refunds, and Withdrawals

You can take courses as part of a program that leads to a credential, such as a certificate, diploma, or degree. Simply apply for program approval by completing and submitting a Part-time Program Declaration form. Go to bcit.ca/pts and click on Downloads. Note: It is a good idea to complete two or three courses before submitting your request for program approval. For a list of all BCIT credentials, visit bcit.ca/study/credentials.

Prerequisites All students are responsible for ensuring they have the necessary prerequisites before undertaking any course. Many part-time programs require English at the BC Grade 12 level. Furthermore, to be successful in BCIT’s applied learning environment, applicants must demonstrate a suitable level of English in all four language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. In order to be admitted to a program, you will be required to provide proof that you meet the specified English-language proficiency requirement. Please check the program web page for specific requirements. BCIT has several upgrading courses for students who wish to improve their English-language skills (page 9).

Course fees must be paid in full at the time of registration. The preferred methods of payment are: credit card (Visa, MasterCard, or American Express); cash or debit card (in person only); cheque or money order; or letter of authorization from employer (to be invoiced by BCIT). Refund information, including the deadline, will be provided when you register for a course. Special fees for some courses are non-refundable, and different refund requirements may apply. Submit withdrawal requests to Student Information and Enrolment Services at either Burnaby Campus or Downtown Campus before the refund deadline. Once the refund deadline has passed, you will need to complete a Request to Withdraw from a Part-time Studies Course form. bcit.ca/admission/fees/parttime.

Our Services Part-time students have access to the same services and amenities as our full-time students including: Aboriginal Services, Bookstore, Counselling, Disability Resource Centre, Harassment and Discrimination, International Credential Evaluation Service, International Student Centre, IT Services, Library, myBCIT, Parking, Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition, Program Advising, Recreation Services, Safety and Security, Student Employment Services, Student Financial Aid and Awards, Student Health Services, and Student Records. bcit.ca/pts/services.

BCIT ID Card The BCIT ID card allows you to access many of the services and resources at BCIT. If you are a current registered student and have paid your fees for a course or a program, you are eligible for a card. Order yours online or in person. bcit.ca/card/getone.

Financial Assistance Need assistance funding your studies? Find out if you qualify for a Part-time Studies grant. If you are planning to apply for finacial aid, you must first complete and submit a Part-time Program Declaration form. Go to bcit.ca/pts and click on Downloads. bcit.ca/finaid/parttime.

myBCIT Part-time students are provided with a myBCIT account. Use this online portal to access student selfservices including: registration information, course schedules, receipts, my.bcit.ca email, marks, final grades, and tax receipts.

If you want solid academic preparation before entering a BCIT technology program, this 15-week, full-time, dayschool program is for you. Improve your skills in core areas such as communication, mathematics, chemistry, and physics in order to meet program prerequisites. TE can also provide BC educational equivalents to supplement credentials earned in other school systems. TE is a great opportunity for you to strengthen your skills and explore BCIT program options at the same time. Intakes are in January and September of each year. TE offers Grade 11- and 12-level chemistry and physics courses to meet technology program entrance requirements. Grade 12-level science courses are available during the January to April term only.

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT STUDIES (BMS)

bcit.ca/7970acert 604.432.8816 The BMS program provides a flexible pathway for permanent residents and international students to enter a full-time diploma program in the School of Business. The Business Management Studies program has four pre-entry English levels. Class sizes are kept small to ensure there is more attention to your individual needs. This program combines a number of foundational business courses with the necessary English upgrading to meet BCIT’s language requirements for advanced placement into diploma programs. You will learn practical workplace and study skills such as how to work in teams, think critically, and do presentations while completing sufficient credit courses to complete level 1 of a business diploma program.

CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE

confucius.bcit.ca 604.412.7732 The Confucius Institute offers courses and customized industry training programs, for the Canadian community, that teach Chinese culture and language skills to enhance your knowledge of China. CINT 1210 teaches students (who have no Chinese background and who have never studied Mandarin before) four basic language skills in Mandarin Chinese: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and provides basic knowledge in Chinese culture. CINT 2001 equips Chinese educators with the skills to teach Chinese as a Second Language in Canada. CINT 2222 provides students with essential knowledge of Chinese history and culture, and some Chinese-language skills.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ENTRY PROGRAM (ISEP)

bcit.ca/international/isep 604.412.7707 ISEP is an intensive English-language program designed for students who are unable to meet their program’s English-language entrance requirements. For 25 hours per week, ISEP develops your overall English language and academic skills. It is also a direct pathway to BCIT certificate, diploma, and degree programs. Students who complete ISEP level 400, 500 or 600 are eligible to transfer into a BCIT program.

ISEP provides training in reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills at all levels of English proficiency. In each of the six levels, the program focuses on improving ESL students’ language by integrating English skills with business and technical contexts. The program supports academic success by helping with cultural adjustment, studying specific topics, and developing critical skills. International students will learn how to succeed in BCIT programs by receiving more English development than with TOEFL or IELTS alone. ISEP also develops confidence in English-language skills while teaching learners how to succeed in North American post-secondary programs.

PROFESSIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT (PELD) (ENGLISH UPGRADING COURSES) bcit.ca/cas/communication/peld/courses 604.456.8089

PELD courses are designed to help you upgrade your English or improve your English at work. PELD is ideal for landed immigrants who are unable to meet BCIT’s English entrance requirements or international students who have completed their high school education in an English-speaking country but require English-language upgrading with a focus on writing. Please write the English Competency Assessment (COMM 0015) to evaluate your ability to study in one of the PELD courses (level 1 to 4). If you wish to enrol in one of our Speaking and Listening courses, please take the English Speaking and Listening Assessment (COMM 0033). Students who wish to enter the PELD program and improve their listening and speaking skills, are required to take both tests. BCIT and the Vancouver Regional Construction Association jointly offer a multi-level, part-time training program for people who wish to enter the construction industry, or for those in the industry wishing to enhance their career potential. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Specialty Nursing program at BCIT is the only program in Canada that combines a BSN degree with advanced specialty nursing education. Aimed at practicing diploma registered nurses, the program focuses on integrating theoretical constructs and processes, such as professionalism, communication, collaboration, growth, reflective critical thinking, and systematic enquiry into specialty nursing practice. Enrol on a course-by-course basis and take up to seven years to complete an advanced specialty certificate, which also forms the basis for a Bachelor of Science Nursing in Specialty Nursing.
