Who are we? We are the focused. The driven. Those who need to understand. We are the ambitious. The entrepreneurial. Those who never stop innovating. We are the initiators. The uncompromising. Those who know it can be done sustainably. We are the relentless. The inspired. Those who have conquered the complexity.

— THE BRITISH COLUMBIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY. EDUCATION FOR A COMPLEX WORLD.

THE POWER TO INSPIRE We look back with profound gratitude on 2019/20 as a year of significant progress at BCIT—progress that was made possible through the extraordinary generosity of our valued partners, donors, and alumni. Together, we received over $9 million and raised a total of $16.7 million (cash and pledged gifts) for BCIT’s INSPIRE Campaign, the largest amount ever raised in a single year in the history of BCIT. Thanks to the efforts of our visionary donors, together with the contributions of the wider BCIT community, we are now closer than ever— $55.1 million to date—to raising the $125 million we need to create $450 million in campus redevelopment and education renewal. You have given us much to celebrate. To INSPIRE Campaign Chair Dr. David Podmore: we thank you for your exceptional leadership. To the members of the INSPIRE Campaign Cabinet and Patrons: we are grateful for your tireless efforts to raise BCIT’s profile, and the success of our students, within the greater community and mobilize support for INSPIRE. To the BCIT Advancement division: we appreciate your commitment to not only engaging donors and alumni globally, but also creating a lasting, positive impact on BCIT and our students. Never has the bond between BCIT and our community been more evident than this spring with the heartwarming response we received for students impacted by the pandemic. Together, in a matter of weeks, we raised more than $160,000 for BCIT’s COVID-19 Emergency Student Response Fund. On behalf of students, staff, and faculty at BCIT, we thank you for your unwavering support.

ACCESS AND INCLUSION EDUCATION THAT KNOWS NO BOUNDARIES Together with our donors, we are making an investment in our students, which in turn becomes an investment in businesses, communities, and economies. Never was this commitment to our students more evident than with the COVID-19 Emergency Student Response Fund, which was launched this spring to provide financial aid to learners impacted by the pandemic. BCIT Foundation’s commitment to our pillar of Access and Inclusion means that, through the INSPIRE Campaign, we will remove more barriers to entry, ensure students can continue their education, and celebrate their success through student scholarships, awards, and bursaries; help students in remote areas access education; and provide holistic support to Indigenous learners. Hannah Bayley, BCIT Ironworker Apprentice, in her father’s workshop.

A student award helps Ironworker Apprentice Hannah Bayley take her first steps towards her dream career Growing up, Hannah Bayley traveled with her parents to car races, including the Molson Indy, where they raced cars and she experienced what ‘hands-on’ means. Those early experiences would end up shaping her career choices later in life. “I became interested in BCIT’s Trades Discovery program,” she says. “I didn’t know which trade I wanted to go into but I knew I wanted to go into a career that was hands-on.” The BCIT Trades Discovery program, which introduces students to different trades, gave Hannah the opportunity to explore several areas until, ultimately, she found her passion: ironworking. Just before she was accepted into BCIT’s Ironworking program, she received good news at the right time. “I received a grant from Concert Properties,” she recalls. “It allowed me to get all the tools and books I needed for my program. It really set me up for my future. I want to thank everyone at Concert and the Trades Discovery program.”

Now an Ironworker Apprentice, Hannah is looking forward to refining her trade and launching the kind of hands-on career she grew up around. Only she’s trading speed on the ground for iron in the sky. “Working at heights is such an exhilarating feeling,” Hannah says. “You have adrenaline pumping through you and you’re looking down at the ground and you’re half-nervous. It’s just the most incredible feeling. But there’s also nothing that gives you more pride than driving past something you built and being able to point it out, knowing you built it from scratch.” Donors like Concert Properties help students find their career paths, become highly skilled for in-demand jobs, and make a difference in the community. LEARNING AND TEACHING INNOVATION THE EVOLUTION OF THE CLASSROOM Over this past year, our students have demonstrated that a technology-driven, immersive applied education from BCIT not only creates positive impact but also achieves top results. They competed against top post-secondary institutions to podium finishes and developed innovative solutions to real-world problems. We couldn’t be prouder. BCIT Foundation’s focus on our pillar of Learning and Teaching Innovation means that—with the support of the community through the INSPIRE Campaign—we can continue to provide our students with new technologies and simulated real-world environments and situations to prepare them with the job-ready skills they need to change the world. These new learning tools include:

∆ Immersive simulations ∆ Makerspaces ∆ Virtual and augmented reality ∆ Cooperative education

BCIT students are harnessing the power of the sun to address food waste One group of BCIT students is working on a project to help address food waste by leveraging the power of the sun. Named Ra Solutions after Ra, the Egyptian god of the sun, the project focuses on developing solar dehydrators to provide an efficient, safe, and cost-effective way to dry fruits and vegetables in regions with warm climates and little access to other forms of food storage. Over the next year, the group is looking forward to improving on the design of their prototype and building partnerships with non-profit organizations to help distribute the solar dehydrators once optimized. Student-developed medical data app triumphs at Silicon Valley hackathon

Marketing students rank in the top 10

After pitching their idea Antibiogram: Powering the fight against superbugs with real-time data on stage, BCIT Computer Systems Technology students (pictured above) placed second at the TechCrunch Disrupt hackathon in San Francisco. Their creation connects doctors to the latest data, making it easier for healthcare providers to prescribe appropriate antibiotics and to avoid the dangers of over-prescription.

This past year, BCIT was the only Canadian school to earn a finalist position to advance to the North American Marketing Association Intercollegiate Conference competition in New Orleans. BCIT Marketing Association students competed against respected North American post-secondary institutions to finish in the top 10 in several categories: first for Overall Exhibit, second for SABRE Marketing and Strategy Simulation, fourth for AMA USCA Sales Student of the Year, and sixth in the Outbound Sales Competition.

Civil Engineering team finds alternative uses for hemp waste as cement replacement Waste not, want not. BCIT Civil Engineering students (now alumni) Spencer Behn and Kumayl Rashid and BCIT Civil Engineering faculty member Dr. Sudip Talukdar uncover alternatives for hemp waste as cement replacement with their groundbreaking research. Their findings showed that hemp ash has the potential to be added to concrete as a filler, which would reduce environmental impact and costs by replacing five percent of cement.

New Health Sciences Centre breaks ground at BCIT Healthcare students at BCIT are one step closer to simulating real-life healthcare situations in an innovative and flexible space with the official groundbreaking of a new Health Sciences Centre, which took place in December 2019. It marks the beginning of a significant step towards campus redevelopment at the Burnaby Campus. The centre will provide the simulated healthcare environments that are a critical component of health-sciences education. “This new state-of-the-art building is going to be a game changer for healthcare students at BCIT,” said Melanie Mark, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training. “It will be more than just a building. It will be the training grounds for the next generation of highly trained health specialists. It was designed with students and the environment in mind and fits squarely within our government’s CleanBC plan.” The new Health Sciences Centre will replace existing simulation space and will replicate the work environments for a variety of hospitals and laboratories. This centre will enable students to learn in an innovative, cohesive space THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS | 2019/20 BCIT FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT

that improves their quality of education. “Healthcare professionals do a fantastic job every day at saving lives and helping people be healthier,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “The innovative Health Sciences Centre at BCIT will have more realistic work scenarios that will give students the skills and experience they need to deliver quality care to their patients once they graduate.” The new centre will be a four-storey, 9,909 squaremetre (106,660 square-feet), net-zero carbon emission building—supporting government’s CleanBC objectives of reducing commercial carbon footprints. The centre will accommodate and provide learning spaces to approximately 7,000 students, including part- and full-time students. The Province is providing $66.6 million of the $78.3 million required to build the centre. Through the INSPIRE Campaign, the BCIT Foundation will raise $11.7 million from its partners in the private sector. Construction will help create 270 direct and 175 indirect jobs. Completion is expected by the end of 2021.

CAMPUS REDEVELOPMENT NEXT-GENERATION LEARNING SPACES This year marked a significant milestone in our pillar of Campus Redevelopment. With our supporters, including our valued INSPIRE Campaign Cabinet and Patrons, and the Government of British Columbia, BCIT celebrated the Health Sciences Centre ground-breaking in December 2019, and is looking forward to taking steps toward further revitalization of the Burnaby Campus. In addition to the Health Sciences Centre, this includes four other new state-of-the-art spaces that will enhance and expand the educational experience of our students:

∆ Trades & Technology Complex ∆ Centre for Ecological Restoration & Climate Adaptation ∆ Centre for Education, Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Research ∆ Student Hub

The campus will come alive with new greenways and bike lanes and renewed public spaces—and the urban ecological restoration of Guichon Creek will bring a weaving waterway to life across campus. Read more: bcit.ca/inspire

Health Sciences Centre Quick Facts The new facility will house 26 health-related programs, including cardiology, sonography, nursing, pediatric, and nuclear medicine. Healthcare students will be able to train for clinical roles through technology-based experiences and sophisticated simulation environments that utilize augmented and virtual reality systems and 3D learning to mimic real-world settings. The new centre will be a net-zero carbon emission building, with 60 underground parking stalls—all of which will be wired for electric-vehicle charging stations. The building is targeting WELL Gold certification. WELL is a complementary rating system, and portions of the WELL Standard align with LEED requirements. Learn more: bcit.ca/inspire 9
