MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF BCIT BCIT graduates, whether they last studied with us this year or 50 years ago, are our greatest ambassadors. Our alumni continue to show the world the transformational power of an applied education through their diversity of culture, experience, credentials, and contribution. This was never more evident than during the pandemic and the on-again, off-again nature of COVID restrictions. Through it all, our newest graduates remained resiliently focused on their goals and studies, despite significant hurdles and challenges, with the support of our committed and professional faculty and staff. At the same time, our alumni put their passion into action, creating positive change to support their industries, communities, and economy. These achievements exemplify the BCIT Alumni Association’s vision to nurture “a global community of passionate alumni promoting the excellence of BCIT.” It has been another unique and exciting year at BCIT. Through the completion of the new $78.3 million Health Sciences Centre (opening in September 2022) and the announcement of the $162.6 million Trades and Technology Complex, BCIT is committed to ensuring our students are prepared to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow. This infrastructure renewal would not be possible without the support of our alumni, many of whom contributed gifts and time through the BCIT INSPIRE Campaign. My thanks to everyone who helped make this possible. As I prepare to retire as President of BCIT in June 2022, I want to express how proud I am of everyone in our BCIT community and that includes our alumni. One of my greatest pleasures as President has been to hear and share the countless stories of your outstanding achievements, courage, integrity, and generosity. You bravely seize and address daunting challenges with innovation and entrepreneurship. You do what’s important and what’s right so that the path of those that follow may be easier. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE BCIT ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Looking back at the swells of change, stasis, and hope of this past year, I am struck by one thing: the inimitable spirit of BCIT alumni. Our alumni are always ready to take on the challenges ahead. They are thought leaders who envision a better tomorrow, tireless technicians who strengthen the backbone of our invaluable community infrastructures, and solution-seeking innovators who reimagine change as opportunity. I am proud to be one of these alumni who are making a difference in British Columbia, across Canada, and around the world. In this annual report, we are pleased to share with you stories of some of our high-achieving alumni and their accomplishments as well as the many activities of the BCIT Alumni Association this past year. We made the second installment of our $1 million pledge (which was announced in September 2020) towards the BCIT Alumni Centre through the BCIT INSPIRE Campaign. Our endowments funded $53,861 in entrance awards, scholarships, and graduating school awards that went to 31 current students. As we welcomed approximately 5,000 more alumni to the Alumni Association, we focused on fostering the success of all of our graduates, launching a robust second annual BCIT Alumni Holiday Market and growing and strengthening our many partnerships. Of course, the important work that we do would not be possible without a dedicated network of supporters. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to take this opportunity to express our deepest gratitude for the steadfast support of BCIT and BCIT President Kathy Kinloch, who is retiring this year. We wish her the very best as she starts her next chapter. And to our many valued partners, thank you for your continued commitment to the Alumni Association and our alumni community. It’s hard to believe that when I completed the Marketing Management program 34 years ago, BCIT had had fewer than 20,000 graduates. Since then, our community has grown tenfold to an incredible 200,000 alumni, whose spirit of leadership, tenacity, and innovation is forging the way. There has never been a more exciting time to be a BCIT alum!

BCIT ALUMNI ASSOCIATION GIVES BACK Since 1985, the BCIT Alumni Association has developed a strong tradition of supporting current and future BCIT alumni. Since the Association’s inception and as partners with the BCIT Foundation, we have awarded 1,057 student scholarships and bursaries totalling more than $1.25 million. This past year, students have shared how these awards have given them the motivation to pursue their dreams. The awards not only recognize them for their outstanding achievements, but also allow them to focus more on their studies and less on finances. 2021 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING & COCKTAIL CLASS SHAKE THINGS UP On June 1, the BCIT Alumni Association shook things up at the 2021 Online Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Cocktail Class. The event saw more than 80 attendees, including alumni from BC and several other provinces across Canada. Participants learned about the achievements of the past year and fit in a little fun led by alumni-owned business The Bar Cart by Lavish Liquid. “This past year was challenging and extraordinary in so many ways,” said BCIT Alumni Association President Emil Bosnjak as he welcomed AGM attendees. “But even though the world saw tremendous change, what remained the same for us is that everything we do is guided by our mission: to foster alumni success, give back to our BCIT community, and engage alumni for life.” Emil shared the Alumni Association’s first Year in Review video highlighting the accomplishments over 2020/21. They included the Association’s $1-million commitment towards the INSPIRE Campaign for the first-ever BCIT Alumni Centre; the first BCIT Alumni Holiday Market; the hosting and sponsorship of more than 20 events; and the funding of nearly $52,000 in awards and scholarship to 32 students.

ENGAGING EVENTS: CELEBRATING NEW GRADS & CONNECTING ALUMNI While the pandemic continued to slow the hosting of in-person events over the past year, the Alumni Association supported several opportunities to bring our alumni together, both virtually and in person. In 2021/22, the Association disbursed nearly $20,000 towards seven events and programs hosted by our community partners and welcomed thousands of our newest alum at our convocation celebration. Learn more about alumni events: bcit.ca/alumni/connect/events 2021 BCIT CONVOCATION CELEBRATION The BCIT Alumni Association proudly welcomed the Institute’s newest graduates at the 2021 Convocation Ceremony, which was held virtually and included a celebration video, complimentary celebration boxes for graduates, and a digital program. Hosted by emcee and BCIT alumnus Kevin Lim, 104.9 KiSS RADiO Vancouver Morning Show Host, the celebration video featured appearances by BCIT President Kathy Kinloch, BCIT Alumni Association President

Emil Bosnjak, BCIT Honorary Doctorate of Technology recipient Dr. Clive Beddoe, class valedictorians, BCIT leaders, and more. It garnered more than 1,390 views and was watched by viewers from around the world. Nearly 1,900 celebration boxes welcomed our newest graduates with a grad cap, a congratulatory card, a pair of BCIT Alumni socks, a BCIT Alumni pin, and an alumni window decal. The Alumni Association promoted the celebration through contests and our social media channels.
SCHMOOZAPALOOZA The Alumni Association sponsored the 16th annual Schmoozapalooza event in January 2022. Organized by the BCIT Marketing Association, the virtual event welcomed 234 attendees and gave students, alumni, and industry members the opportunity to build connections through activities including speed networking.
BCITSA IxL CONFERENCE In February 2022, the Alumni Association sponsored and participated in the fifth annual IxL Leadership Conference. Hosted by the BCIT Student Association, the two-day virtual conference welcomed a total of 170 alumni, faculty, and students. It featured a panel of industry leaders on a speaker panel that included BCIT alumni Hannah Rangeley-Davies and Sonny Thind, who shared their experiences with overcoming challenges.
MACKAY CEO FORUMS BCIT and the Alumni Association became sponsors of MacKay CEO Forums as an Innovator Partner. This exciting partnership will provide BCIT alumni with the opportunity to engage in peer learning and networking events with other CEOs, executives, and business owners. With more than 1,200 members around the world, MacKay CEO Forums is designed to connect highperforming business leaders and inspire them to grow and learn from each other.
GOLF TOURNAMENTS Alumni enjoyed hitting the links with the wider community at two golf tournaments this past year. The Association sponsored and participated in the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade ProAm Golf Tournament at Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club in August 2021 and Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament at the Redwoods Golf Course in September 2021.
ASTTBC AGM AND CONFERENCE The BCIT Alumni Association sponsored and participated in the 2021 Virtual ASTTBC (Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia) AGM and Conference in May 2021. The Association welcomed attendees to its virtual tradeshow booth at this month-long event.
VANCOUVER WRITERS FEST In October 2021, the Alumni Association sponsored the Vancouver Writers Fest held at Granville Island. The event saw approximately 200 attendees as the Association welcomed visitors to our on-site booth and contests.

In 2021/22, we shone a light on alumni who overcame enormous challenges on the road to success, are using technology to protect their communities, and are motivating future generations of BCIT graduates. INDIGENOUS RED SEAL MACHINIST CHELSEA BARRON IS FORGING HER OWN PATH Chelsea Barron has an angel. Her name was Angelina. She hunted on horseback, and was a residential school survivor and fierce mother of nine children. Angelina was Chelsea’s grandmother and is a driving inspiration in her life. Like her grandmother before her, Chelsea is forging her own unique path. A member of the Tsilhqot’in (Chilcotin) Nation,
the BCIT alumna is now a Red Seal Machinist and one of few women working in a male-dominated trade. She says the leading-edge skills she learned as a student in the BCIT Machinist program helped prepare her to succeed: “You don’t often see many women in the machining industry. Being singled out as different, as a minority, a woman, an Indigenous person…it’s tough. You have to prove you belong.”

JUSTIN PERRY MITIGATES BC WILDFIRES USING DRONE TECHNOLOGY
FIRST-EVER BCIT ALUMNI WELCOME VIDEO
What started out as a passion for aviation and forestry ended up leading BCIT alumnus Justin Perry to his dream job. As Chief Drone Pilot with Stinson Aerial Services Inc., he detected wildfires using infrared sensing technology during last summer’s intense fire season in BC. Justin’s role as a drone pilot was the perfect opportunity to combine the skills he learned in the BCIT Forest and Natural Areas Management Diploma program and his interest in drone technology.
This year, we launched our first-ever BCIT Alumni Association Welcome Video. Debuting at our 2021 Virtual AGM, the 50-second video welcomes alumni to the Alumni Association and our many exclusive benefits and opportunities. The upbeat video is featured on our website, the BCIT Youtube channel, and our social media channels. Watch the video: bcit.ca/alumni
Outside of mitigating wildfires and pushing his own limits to grow, Justin finds value in giving back to youth in the Indigenous community through drone training as a way to empower them. Drone technology can be used to collect high-resolution remote sensing data of lands and waters, which Indigenous youth can utilize for land management purposes in their communities.

HOW A BCIT ALUM’S TRAGEDY INSPIRED 35 YEARS OF GENEROSITY SUPPORTING BCIT BROADCAST STUDENTS In 1975 when he was 15 years old, Ken Garrett got his first big break in radio on CJAT-AM, calling himself “Super Kid”. His on-air personality would not only jump-start this BCIT Broadcast alum’s passion for broadcasting but also foreshadow his real-life heroism in a tragedy that cost him his life nearly 15 years later. Fast forward to May 1987, when Ken, now a successful radio station manager, and his girlfriend had just got engaged. To celebrate, the couple set out on a local lake when overpowering winds suddenly flipped their canoe. Ken repeatedly pushed Shelley onto the overturned canoe, ultimately saving her life. Ken, who had been in the frigid water too long, did not survive.

The devastating loss shattered the Garrett family but also inspired Ken’s father George to contribute to a BCIT endowment funding awards for BCIT Broadcast students. Now 87 years old, George has contributed faithfully to the Ken Garrett Memorial Award endowment in his son’s memory for the past 35 years. By 2021, the endowment had disbursed more than $13,000 in awards to 26 BCIT Broadcast students.

CAMPUS REDEVELOPMENT AT BCIT BURNABY CAMPUS Exciting new developments got underway at BCIT this past year. Through the BCIT INSPIRE Campaign and with the support of the Province of British Columbia, a tireless Campaign Cabinet, Campaign Patrons, donors, industry partners, alumni, faculty, and staff, two campus redevelopment projects are transforming teaching and learning spaces at the Burnaby campus. At 106,660 square feet, the Centre will allow BCIT to advance teaching and learning technologies and significantly increase training capacity for key in-demand healthcare professionals. Set to be the most sustainable building on the Burnaby campus, the four-storey building will be a net-zero carbon emission space, integrating patient-care simulation, allied heath and laboratory science, while staying true to the applied learning for which BCIT is known.
STUDENTS TO GET NEW AND RENEWED $162.2M FACILITIES Students, staff, and faculty in BCIT trades and technology programs will soon have access to new training facilities with an investment of $162.6 million in the Trades and Technology Complex (TTC) at the Burnaby campus. A collection of new
and renovated buildings and enhanced campus infrastructure, the TTC will create increased access to world-leading, adaptive learning environments for 21st-century trades education. The investment builds on BCIT’s outstanding leadership in trades training and contributes directly to BC’s economic and workforce development priorities. The Province of British Columbia is providing $136.6 million and the BCIT Foundation is providing $26 million of privatesector support towards the first phase of the TTC, which includes significant contributions from industry partners across six sectors. The multi-building development will train future trades and technology professionals to meet the growing skilled-labour demand, as well as ensure that the workforce is ready to adapt to the growing challenges of tomorrow.

ABOUT THE BCIT ALUMNI ASSOCIATION VISION A global community of passionate alumni promoting the excellence of BCIT. MISSION To foster alumni success, give back to our BCIT community, and engage alumni for life. Founded by graduates in 1979, the BCIT Alumni Association is a registered, non-profit society governed by a board of volunteer directors and financed by the Association’s partnerships, revenue-generation programs, and BCIT support. The Association has more than 195,000 members across the globe. All BCIT graduates who have earned a credential of 21 credit hours or more are alumni, and members of the association.

The Association generates revenue to fund programs and services for alumni, and to give back to the BCIT community. BCIT has launched the largest campaign in its 50-year history, INSPIRE. The Association aims to be a significant donor to this campaign. Over the term of this plan, we will increase and diversify revenue to enhance alumni programs, and reach our philanthropic goal of making a major, multi-year pledge to the INSPIRE Campaign.
