— ADDRESSING BRITISH COLUMBIA’S LABOUR MARKET NEEDS BCIT PANDEMIC-RESILIENT JOBS REPORT BCIT SITE Centre 2021
—— THE BRITISH COLUMBIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
While the COVID-19 pandemic brought upon changes to many industries, it has also created new opportunities for sectors to embrace, particularly in support of the economic recovery. A comparison of all of the job postings from March to December 2020 shows that graduates from the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) are still in high demand. Of the top 62 fields with job opportunities during the pandemic, BCIT trains workers for 28 of them. Overall, BCIT offers 71 programs that are directly associated with high opportunity occupations. And it’s not just in the pandemic world that BCIT can benefit. The Institute trains students for almost half the “high opportunity occupations” in the province, according to the recent BC Labour Market Outlook Report. Over the next decade, the provincial government expects 861,000 job openings in 130 different fields, and dozens of those can get their start at BCIT. The BC Labour Market Outlook uses several labour market indicators to determine which occupations will be in high demand from now until 2029. Expected job opportunities, current and expected labour market tightness and prevailing wage rate are all used to measure which fields will continue to thrive in the province. Nearly half of those occupations can get their start at BCIT, through the school’s hands-on training and industry connections. From Accounting Technician to Software Engineer, Registered Nurse to Corporate Sales Manager, 62 of the 130 high opportunity jobs are available through training at BCIT. It’s no surprise that nurses are in high demand right now, but what about workers outside the typical “frontline” positions? Accounting Technicians, who are trained through the BCIT Accounting Diploma, saw 2,657 jobs posted in BC since the pandemic began. That occupation, along with 20 others available to BCIT grads, was highlighted in a report of Pandemic and Recession-resilient jobs prepared by the San Diego-Imperial Center of Excellence for Labor Market Research (COE). The COE analyzed 800 different jobs, comparing job growth data from the 2008 recession with job postings during the COVID pandemic. They identified just 25 jobs that were deemed both recession and pandemic resilient. And training for 21 of those occupations is available at BCIT. Of the 21,182 management related job postings in BC this year, 85% require training offered at BCIT. The technical fields posted 31,413 positions in 2020 and the expected demand over the next ten years is 143,963. BCIT trains people for 52% of these occupations. In the area of trades, BCIT continues to be the leader, offering programs for 100% of the high demand trades openings. Students looking for pandemic resilient jobs need to look no further than BCIT. With applied learning and industry connections at its core, BCIT programs pave the path to a meaningfulcareer that can withstand the pressures of an everchanging world.
