financial aid & awards–entrance awards Post-secondary education is a big investment in your future–it’s your ticket to a successful career. It’s also a time in your life that requires you to make a personal investment of your time and money. For many, it’s something they can’t do without additional resources and financial support. BCIT Student Financial Aid and Awards provides services to help you figure out how to make going to school financially possible. Besides providing advice, there are several funding opportunities that you can tap into once you’re a student including awards and bursaries (see page 85 for details). Many don’t realize that there are also entrance awards you can apply for before you begin your first day of study. Entrance awards are available for technology and trades students registered in a full-time program; in fact, there were over 120 awards given out last year. Entrance awards can make a substantial difference in lessening your financial commitment. For instance, the BCIT President’s Entrance Awards provide up to 40 students with $3,000 towards one year’s tuition.
Here’s just a sampling of entrance awards available*: >> BCIT Alumni Association Entrance Awards–up to five awards towards one year’s tuition (maximum $3,000) >> BCIT Board of Governors Entrance Awards for Baccalaureate Degrees–up to six awards towards two consecutive terms’ tuition (maximum $4,500 total) >> HSBC Aerospace Entrance Awards–two $3,500 awards >> PCL Centennial Construction Industry Training Entrance Awards–three $2,000 awards *Subject to change, please visit bcit.ca/finaid for the most up-to-date listing.

Application and admission To help you achieve success, BCIT establishes . admission guidelines. Most programs require specific Grade 11 and Grade 12 courses. High school graduation is also a requirement for some programs. A number of programs also have non-academic requirements such as attending an information session, submitting a resumÊ, or participating in an interview. See pages 18–73 of this book for specific admission requirements for your program, or find them at bcit.ca/study/programs.
74
Requirements When you apply, you will be required to submit proof that you have completed the entrance requirements as identified by the program to which you are applying. You will be contacted by the Admissions department regarding any outstanding requirements. This applies to all applicants whether you have been educated inside or outside Canada. Applicants lacking specific entrance requirement courses or required grades will be notified by Admissions. It is your responsibility to upgrade to meet the required standards for the program to which you are applying. Program advisors can assist you with admission planning and provide information on upgrading options.
bcit.ca
International students should check with the International Student Centre (ISC) regarding admission requirement equivalencies. If necessary, your credentials from outside Canada can be evaluated through the International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES). Find out more at bcit.ca/ices. Acceptable alternatives to a high-school diploma Both the General Education Development (GED) and the Basic Training for Skills Development Level 4 (BTSD 4) are considered equivalent to high school graduation with a Pass in English 12. GED Math is equivalent to Math 10. The BC Adult Graduation Diploma is also considered equivalent to high school graduation. Applicants should check with Program Advising to ensure that courses taken through the BCAGD are acceptable for admission to specific BCIT programs.
Priority of student selection First priority: BC residents who are Canadian citizens or landed immigrants (BC residents with permanent resident status at time of application) who have lived in BC for the immediate 12 months prior to the program start. Second priority: Canadian citizens and those applicants with permanent resident status who live out of province. Third priority: Applicants without Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant (permanent resident) status.
Document requirements You must submit official transcripts showing you meet the academic requirements identified by your chosen program. If you do not yet have official transcripts, attach photocopies so processing can begin.
A person will be considered for admission as long as they meet or exceed the program entrance requirements.
Other documents may be required, such as a resumé, letter of intent, or a copy of your driver’s licence. Your name and student number (if you have one) must appear on all of your documents.
Upgrading options
If you are still in high school
If you don’t have the courses or grades you need for acceptance, or want to take refresher courses, BCIT offers several preparatory programs. Please see page 18 for details.
All applications are considered promptly and equitably. Please note, you can only be considered for one program at a time.
Ask your principal’s office to provide you with your marks for the courses you have completed, interim marks for courses you are currently attending, and a list of courses you plan to take in the future. Arrange to have your final official transcript sent directly to BCIT as soon as your courses are complete. Interim and final transcripts from the Ministry of Education may arrive at BCIT later than required, so it is important that you submit your own copies of interim and final marks as soon as you receive them from your high school.
Continual intake and specific intake
If you have graduated from high school
Once a “continual intake” program is full, complete applications are put on a wait-list on a first-come, firstserved basis for the next available seat. Applicants who have met the program entrance requirements will be placed on the wait-list.
Submit your final official transcripts as proof of having completed the entrance requirements for your chosen program.
Mature students
How applications are processed
“Specific intake” refers to each time a program takes in new students. Once a specific intake program is full, the remaining applications are not carried forward to the next intake. Individuals who still want to take the program must re-apply for the next start date. If there are more applicants than seats available, BCIT will select those applicants it deems to have the best opportunity for success. This means that meeting the prerequisites does not guarantee you a seat in the program.
If you are attending or have graduated from college or university Submit your high school transcripts along with official post-secondary transcripts to show you meet the entrance requirements for the program you have chosen.

If you are currently upgrading If you are attending or planning to attend courses that are entrance requirements for your chosen program, include proof of registration with your application. It is essential that you keep the Admissions department informed of your progress by sending interim transcripts or an official note from the course instructor. When you complete the course, arrange to have your official transcripts sent to Student Information and Enrolment Services. If you are taking an upgrading course at a college, be sure to check with Program Advising for the equivalent course numbers accepted by BCIT.

If transfer credit is granted, you will have a lighter course load; however, the duration of your program will not be shorter, and your fees will not be reduced. To be eligible for scholarships and graduating awards, you must carry a 100% course load in your fulltime program at BCIT. 2. Advanced placement Advanced placement refers to the entry of students to any level of a program beyond Level One, where advanced standing is given when standard course requirements are recognized as having been completed elsewhere or previously. Advanced placement applicants may apply to any level in the program beyond Level One, but they may also apply to combinations of courses in multiple levels. In most cases, advanced standing will v i e wbook 2011 / 2012
only be granted where an applicant can show evidence of successfully completing an acceptable equivalent for every single course in the preceding level(s). For more information, phone 604.432.8230 or visit bcit.ca/admission/transfer/advanced.shtml. 3. International credential evaluation service If you have studied in another country and want your education recognized in Canada, BCIT offers the International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES). BCIT recommends that international students pursue a credit evaluation of their previous studies prior to applying to BCIT. This service allows us to correctly assess your credentials either for course transfer credit or for advanced placement. For information, see bcit.ca/ices.
Prior Learning Assessment Recognition (PLAR) You may have acquired skills and knowledge that are relevant to your field of study but that are not acknowledged in formal academic credentials. For example, you may have extensive on-the-job training that does not qualify for transfer credit. BCIT provides you with the opportunity to demonstrate your expertise and to receive credit where appropriate. For more information, visit bcit.ca/admissions/transfer/plar. 81

International applicants If your education was completed in another country, submit official high school and post-secondary transcripts from the schools you attended. Official English translations must accompany documents that are in another language. Costs for translation into English are the responsibility of the applicant. Please note that the deadline for applications from international students is four weeks earlier than stated for each program. For example, we recommend that students apply from October 1–February 28 for programs that start the following September. The absolute application deadline for September starts is May 1, but the earlier you apply the better your chances of gaining a seat. This deadline is also in place to allow you additional time to apply for your study permit from the Canadian Embassy, Consulate or High Commission in your area. Medical insurance British Columbia law states that all residents must have medical insurance while living and studying here. It is also mandatory while studying at BCIT. International students must provide the International Student Centre with a copy of their medical insurance documents. Students who do not have medical insurance can purchase excellent insurance through Student Guard, a private medical insurance company. The cost of this coverage is $750 per year. This works out to $2 per day. Study permit Most foreign students will need a study permit to study in Canada; however, there are a few exceptions, including: If you wish to study in a short-term course or program You do not need a study permit if you are planning to take a course or program in Canada with a duration of six months or less. You must complete the course or program within the period authorized for your stay in Canada. If you are a visitor who has taken a few BCIT courses and decide to continue your studies, you will be required to apply for a study permit from outside Canada. You will need to either go to the United States to apply or go back to your home country to apply. If you are a minor child already in Canada You do not need a study permit if you are a minor child, under the age of 19, already in Canada, and your parents are not ‘visitors’ in Canada. For details, visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website at www.cic.gc.ca.
v i e wbook 2011 / 2012
Foreign representatives to Canada (Diplomat Status) Family or staff members of a foreign representative to Canada under the age of 25 accredited by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, do not need a study permit to study. Certain conditions apply. Contact the BCIT International Student Centre at +1.604.432.8616 for details. For international students who are outside of Canada Once you have been accepted into a program at BCIT, take your letter of acceptance, along with your passport, additional passport photos as required, and the appropriate fee to the Canadian Embassy nearest your home. Apply for your study permit at the embassy. Please note that the entire process may take between three weeks and six months, depending on whether you require a medical examination, and on the workload of the embassy. Extending your study permit Once you have been accepted into a program at BCIT you will be required to submit your valid study permit to the International Student Centre. Please contact the International Student Centre at +1.604.432.8816 to request a Letter of Verification form to extend your study permit. Application packages are available at www.cic.gc.ca. Information for permanent residents A study permit is not required. Students must provide a copy of their official Permanent Resident documents to the International Student Centre. Who needs a Temporary Resident Visa? A Temporary Resident Visa is an official document issued by a Canadian visa office in your home country. It is placed in your passport to show that you have met the requirements for admission to Canada as a temporary resident. Please visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) website at www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp to determine whether or not you need a Temporary Resident Visa to enter Canada. How do I apply for a Temporary Resident Visa? If you need a Temporary Resident Visa in addition to your study permit, you can apply for both documents at the same time.
