ACH. RENEWAL. Where do we even begin in describing the last year, and particularly 2020? We’ll start where our heart is—with our exceptional and passionate BCIT community. We simply cannot put into words how proud we are of our students, faculty, and staff for their ongoing focus and commitment to applied education as we pivoted to primarily online learning in a matter of days to keep our community safe back in March. And, although this pivot was not without its ongoing challenges, the community has barely missed a beat. First and foremost, BCIT continues to deliver an exceptional applied education to support our students in achieving their academic and learning goals, regardless of our delivery model. Also importantly, we are working very closely with WorkSafeBC and the Provincial Health Officer to adapt our learning spaces to accommodate physical distancing, increased cleaning and hygiene, and other measures to allow some faculty and students to safely return to campus for specific programs that require hands-on learning in order to complete a credential. Synonymous with all of this, BCIT has and continues to make strides on the Strategic Plan, having successfully hosted the Ecocity World Summit last Fall and launching our own BCIT Ecocity Centre of Excellence. We’ve also published our Indigenous Vision and Education Plan with implementation underway, and we have strengthened relationships with industry across all sectors of BC’s economy. We will continue to work closely with our industry partners to understand and meet their needs during and post COVID-19 measures. BCIT has long been celebrated for its innovation, drive, and industry alignment. We are confident these core attributes, aligned with our values, will not only serve our students well in this new paradigm, but will empower BCIT to play a key and central role in BC’s short and long-term recovery from this current global pandemic. Thank you for your ongoing support and helping us to make a difference.

SUSTAINABILITY VISION Launching the BCIT Sustainability Vision Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, BCIT launched the Institute’s first Sustainability Vision. Combining the interests of nearly 800 students, faculty, staff, and partners, the Vision outlines a path for continued integration of sustainability through BCIT policies, practices, and culture. “The launch of the BCIT Sustainability Vision represents a significant milestone in BCIT’s Strategic Plan, and is integral to fulfilling our commitment to a people-focused organization, future proof education, and globally relevant connections,” said President Kathy Kinloch.

Building a cleaner future in communities The BCIT Smart Microgrid Applied Research Team (SMART) is the recipient of the 2020 Cleantech Educational Institution Award presented by Foresight Cleantech Accelerator Centre. SMART is recognized for its leadership in bringing sustainability and green initiatives to the forefront of communities across BC. From developing an efficient remote community renewable energy platform that helps the Lutsel K’e First Nation Community reduce their reliance on diesel to identifying optimal locations for building electric vehicle charging stations along the province’s highways, SMART continues to partner with industry and government to build greener communities.

BCIT launches Ecocity Centre of Excellence Anchoring the Institute’s global leadership in the advancement of sustainable cities, the Ecocity Centre of Excellence will leverage our leadership in green roofs and living walls, smart micro-grid technology, and ecological restoration while adding new capabilities to assess a city’s energy and materials requirements.

Our Vision

EMPOWERING PEOPLE.  Shaping BC.  Inspiring global progress. Embracing the changing face of the modern workplace

Empowering high school students BCIT is fostering collaboration and critical thinking skills in high school students while developing their business leadership and engineering skills for success in the future workforce.

Representation and inclusivity are central to the mandate at BCIT. Offering broad representation and equal opportunities to students translates directly to more diverse BC workplaces.

The BCIT School of Business and Media, Enactus, and Education Support and Innovation co-hosted the annual Triple Bottom Line High Schools Business Case Competition for high school students to acquire skills to build professional business cases and receive mentorship from post-secondary students.

On campus, we embrace Indigenous learnings and teachings, create courses that bring underrepresented groups to non-diverse industries and tailor learning environments to individuals’ needs. From Women in Computing to Indigenous Culture Club and LGBTQ+, BCIT Student Association’s wide selection of student clubs are supporting diversity and inclusion.

The annual VEX Robotics Competition also took place by challenging high school students to design and build a robot.

We’re also building collaborative relationships worldwide to enable students to learn from immersive cultural experiences.

Heritage Woods Secondary School teacher James Zhuang and Jason Brett, BCIT Technology Teacher Education Instructor and Director of Pacific Youth Robotics Society, stands with a group of high school students who competed in an intense one-day robotics tournament. 4

Celebrating our nurses For 50 years, the BCIT Nursing program has prepared students to demonstrate resilience, leadership, compassion, and care for those in need. For National Nursing Week, we celebrated members of the BCIT nursing community and their journey into the profession. Among our notable community members are BCIT Nursing alumna Kayla DiBauda and alumnus-turned-instructor Pawan Varaich, who supported as frontline healthcare workers through the COVID-19 pandemic. The BCIT community wholeheartedly thanks all nurses for their significant daily contributions to our healthcare system.

Fostering inclusivity for women and Indigenous learners BCIT is committed to creating an inclusive learning environment for all our learners. This year, BCIT delivered four cohorts of the Enhanced Bridge Watch Rating program in remote communities. The program provides a pathway for women and Indigenous people to enter into rewarding marine sector careers. This initiative strengthens partnerships with coastal Indigenous communities, reflects the learning needs of isolated and remote coastal populations, supports learning readiness, and recognizes Indigenous marine heritage and history.

Supporting our community during COVID-19 BCIT alumni, faculty, and students demonstrated resilience and innovation while supporting COVID-19 relief efforts. Nancy Paris, Director of BCIT Applied Research MAKE+, joined a multidisciplinary team to provide recommendations in response to the global ventilator shortage while the School of Health Sciences provided medical supplies to local health authorities. Mechanical Engineering alumnus Joshua Bradshaw developed a cap-mounted face shield for restaurant workers and Marketing alumnus Jason Zanatta transformed his bedding company to become Canada’s first manufacturer of N95 respirators. BCIT Mechanical Engineering alumnus Jamie Haakons and Interior Design alumna Keisha Go 3D printed thousands of face shields for healthcare workers.

Shaping the future: INSPIRE Campaign launch INSPIRE, the Institute’s largest fundraising campaign in its 50+ year history, ushers in a new era where students can meet tomorrow’s challenges with new ways of thinking, learning, and collaborating. The Campaign focuses on three pillars: access and inclusion to remove barriers to education, learning and teaching innovation through virtual and augmented reality, and campus redevelopment to transform the Burnaby Campus into an applied learning and research destination. The first phase supports a $450 million redevelopment plan and a goal to raise $125 million towards renewing the Burnaby Campus. This includes up to five new buildings with nextgeneration learning spaces.

BCIT embraces changing industry with rename of its business school BCIT addressed the growing demand for ethical, quality journalism and communications as a powerful tool for influencing the success of businesses by renaming its business school the BCIT School of Business and Media. As the only business school in BC that offers programs in Broadcast and Media, Animation and Gaming, Web and Mobile, and Communications and Graphics, the BCIT School of Business and Media reflects the growth of media and digital arts programs at BCIT, and is now one of the largest business and media schools in Western Canada with 30 full-time programs, 80 part-time programs, and over 300 courses.

BC’s first Electric Vehicle Maintenance Training program With ongoing leadership in sustainability and providing future-proof education, BCIT has launched the province’s first Electric Vehicle (EV) Maintenance Training program in early 2020.
