Tee it up! Golfers vacationing in Bethel can play two top courses located within 10 minutes of each other.
Bethel Inn Resort Located right in Bethel Village, just a chip shot from the Bethel common, the Bethel Inn Resort has one of the most interesting and fun courses in Maine. Seven holes remain from the Bethel Inn’s historic 1915 layout, and are blended with 11 newer holes by architect Geoffrey Cornish. When Cornish designed the additional holes in 1989, he completed
what many now describe as one of the finest courses in New England. Cornish took advantage of the natural hazards and land flow on the site to create a championship course that now measures 6,663 yards from the back tees. All of the holes at Bethel, old and new, serve up stunning views of the surrounding mountains and offer five tee positions to accommodate a variety of players.
The Chapman Inn Bed & Breakfast
Where you're not just a room number, but a real person with a real name who deserves warm hospitality at sane rates.
Over the years, the golf course and resort have received many accolades. “Quintessential mountain golf at its best” by Northeast Golf Magazine and “Among the 25 best places in the U.S. to host an unforgettable family gathering” by Travel & Leisure Magazine. The golf school is one of the best and most affordable in New England, emphasizing very small class size, personalized on-course PGA instruction, video analysis, unlimited golf with carts and all meals, and over 200 acres of resort activities. For tee times, call (207) 8246276. For golf school and resort information at the Bethel Inn Resort, call (207) 824-2175 or visit bethelinn.com.
Sunday River Golf Club The Sunday River Golf Club is perched on a hill at the edge of the Sunday River Valley and overlooks the majestic Mahoosuc Mountain Range.
The course was designed by none other than Robert Trent Jones, Jr. The Ivy-educated Jones, who authored a book on course design and served as president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, is essentially golf course architecture royalty and has designed more than 270 courses on six continents— many of them award-winning. Sunday River’s course has been listed as one of GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 must-play courses in the country and the No. 1 public course in Maine by Golfweek Magazine. Prior to its construction, Jones said that the course would strike “a balance between challenge and playability,” and has since called it “one of the most outstanding courses we have had the opportunity to develop.” Sunday River’s golf course has 18 self-contained fairways that are among the widest in Maine. Sunday River plays to more than 7,100 yards from
the championship tees and just over 5,000 yards from the forward tees, with two additional sets of tees in between to suit golfers of all abilities. As it is one of the most scenic and technical courses in New England, it’s no surprise that it’s also one of the region’s favorites. The golf facility includes a driving range with multiple target greens and an expansive practice green, all with spectacular mountain views. The 10,000 square-foot clubhouse is fashioned from log and stone, and features a deck overlooking the course, a grill serving lunch, and a complete pro shop stocked with equipment and apparel. The Jordan and Grand Summit Hotels are located just minutes from the acclaimed course and offer lodging packages, which include breakfast. Bethel Area Camps & Cottages Three camps close to hiking, boating, swimming, fishing, golf, wildlife watching Planning a vacation to the Western Maine mountains? Whether your idea of the perfect escape is a quiet week on a lake with a stack of books and board games, or a series of day trips to experience all that the area has to offer, you’ll find that a cabin, cottage, or camp makes an ideal headquarters for your summer getaway. In the middle part of the last century, many vacationers began to discover the charms of a peaceful retreat in the Maine woods. Here, they could take a break to enjoy life at a slower pace—fishing, paddling, swimming, or just relaxing on a sunny deck or screened porch, falling asleep at night to the sounds of loon calls and lapping waves. For today’s busy families, time spent together at a camp
or cottage is an opportunity to create memories, to leave behind work and worries for a laid-back vacation experience that will never be forgotten. The Bethel area is home to hundreds of these traditional Maine vacation homes, and many of them are available to rent by the week, month, or season. Offerings range from rustic camps that let you step back in time to a simpler era,
to well-appointed waterfront homes equipped with luxurious amenities. For information about finding your own special camp or cottage to rent or buy, contact a Bethel rental or real estate agency.
Campgrounds For those who like roughing it a bit more, the area also offers several campgrounds.

Kayak or canoe the Androscoggin The Androscoggin Canoe Trail Eight access points along the beautiful Androscoggin River allow kayakers and canoeists to enjoy short or long paddles throughout the Bethel region. In summer months the trip is generally a gentle one, with plenty of opportunity to watch for moose, eagles and other wildlife. There are some areas of rapids, so boaters should use caution. High water can also create swift currents. Because Route 2 generally follows the path of the river, most access points are right off the road. They include: the Shelburne Bridge off Meadow Road in New Hampshire (on the Maine/N.H. border); Bridge
Serving the whole family, from birth through retirement and beyond
Street in Gilead; Newt’s Landing off Ferry Road in West Bethel; Bethel Outdoor Adventure off Route 2; Davis Park off Route 26 in Bethel; Moran’s Landing off Route 2 in Hanover; Hanover Boat Launch off Route 2 in Hanover; Rumford Boat Launch off Route 2 in Rumford. Some are public while others are on private land. In all cases, please be respectful of the land and wildlife along the river by packing out trash, refraining from campfires and checking for invasive plants on your craft before putting in. (Note: be mindful of poison ivy along the riverbank). For more on paddling the river, go to mahoosuc.org/ androcanoe.html.
QUILT GALLERY QUILTING SUPPLIES Over 2,000 bolts of Fabric Many ready made quilts & items to purchase
For those who wish to rent their craft, kayaks and canoes (and information) are available at Bethel Outdoor Adventure, located on the Androscoggin next to the Route 2 bridge in Bethel. Many lakes in the Bethel area also have public boat access, including Lake Christopher and North, South and Round ponds in Greenwood and Woodstock.
Other water bodies In addition to the Androscoggin River, the Saco River in Southwestern Maine is a favorite of canoeists and kayakers. Larger lakes within an hour’s drive include Lake Umbagog, Richardson Lake, and Kezar Lake. Photo: Mac Davis

Climbing Old Speck in Grafton Notch By Cherri Crockett Welcome to Grafton Notch, where you’ll hike the same paths of the thousands of thru-hikers who travel the historic Appalachian Trail each year and find breathtaking views from nearby Table Rock, West and East Baldpate, Eyebrow Loop, Old Speck, and the 39-mile Grafton Loop Trail. Whether you’re looking to spend the afternoon on a short loop hike up Table Rock or Eyebrow, or you’re looking for an enjoyable day hike into East Baldpate, up Old Speck or an overnight adventure on the AT or the GLT, Grafton Notch is centrally located. From the parking lot on Route 26, approximately 12 miles from the corner of Route 2 in Newry, you’ll find ample parking space and outhouse-style restrooms in the shadow of Old Speck and Eyebrow Loop. There are no trash receptacles here, so please remember to be a responsible outdoorsman and follow state park rules and carry out what you carry in, and dispose of waste properly. This day I’m on Old Speck and I’m using it as a training hike for my trip to Katahdin, which is 10 days away, and the day is gorgeous. A little chilly as my friend Jackie and I check out the map on the wooden sign in the parking lot, but it’s perfect for our 7.6-mile roundtrip hike ahead. Old Speck is the tallest peak in Grafton Notch, standing at 4,170 feet, and has amazing 360-degree views of the surrounding area from a tower that stands at its summit. Remember, if you’re planning to hike this area prior to July 1, don’t be surprised to see snow, as the shadows of the mountain don’t feel the warmth of the sun much before this. Be prepared. As is our custom while hiking, my friend and I always start out gabbing and laughing as we hoof it up the steepest sections of the trail, not really paying any mind to anything but the trail ahead. We stop and take a few pictures near some cool rock steps
A hiker on the tower at the top of Old Speck, which has 360-degree views of the Mahoosuc and Grafton notch mountain ranges. (Photo by Jackie Dupuis) that have been placed by the trail maintenance crews of the Appalachian Mountain Club, at a plank crossing, and of course, the Cascade Brook waterfall that parallels the trail about a half mile up. If the water is low and you attempt to bask in the cool mountain spring, use caution, as the moss on the surrounding rocks is slippery. Falling near this waterfall could result in extreme injury. Every now and then, Jackie asks if I’ve seen a white Appalachian Trail marker on a tree or rock. My answer is ‘no,’ as there has not been a single marker for more than a quarter mile. If it weren’t for the obvious trail, we would have been concerned, but we know that it is supposed to intersect with the Eyebrow Loop somewhere in the first mile. Even though most of the trail is well marked, always remember to pay attention to your surroundings and know which color marker you’re following, as the GLT is marked in blue and intersects the AT near Old Speck. Jackie and I continue to walk, listening to the birds, hop-scotching rocks in the stream bed, admiring the tall pines that create a nice canopy, shading the
Rumford Hospital Skilled, compassionate care – close to home
trail from the increasing heat of the August sun and talking of our plan to hike Katahdin. We can see that we’re coming out to the edge of the mountain and the trail looks familiar to me, as I’ve hiked the Eyebrow on other excursions. Not really sure where the trails intersect, and knowing that we’ve hiked at least a mile, I remember my hiking book that’s stowed in my pack. Looking at the map and comparing with the app on my phone that I’m tracking our hike with, I confirm we’re still on track and we should see the trail split in another tenth of a mile or so. We continue on and sure enough, there is a rock with the first white marker we’ve set eyes on, and a little way after that is the tree with the signs for Old Speck and Eyebrow Loop with the two white slashes indicating a trail junction. It’s always a good idea to have a map handy for your hike, not only so you can find your way, but to help describe your location in the event of an emergency. Knowing where you’re at and being able to describe it to a rescue unit is always helpful. Cresting that next granite ledge and coming into a clearing of short, scrubby pines, with a view of the northwest landscape, is absolutely breathtaking. With blue sky above us and scattered puffy clouds, the sun blankets the landscape. As I look out over that landscape I can hardly contain my excitement for reaching the top of the mountain and seeing what other views are in store. Over the next couple miles, we climb
over exposed roots on a fairly steep incline and meet several thru-hikers of all ages. You can expect to encounter thruhikers all along this section of the AT, especially late July and into August, as they’re trying to make their way to Katahdin before cooler weather sets in. As we near the summit of Old Speck, the trail becomes more exposed on the easterly slope, with thick underbrush lining the trail. About two-tenths of a mile from the summit there is a beautiful view of the Baldpates and Table Rock to the east, as well as a view of Route 26 carving its way back toward Route 2 in Newry. At one-tenth of a mile to the summit, the trail splits; left will take you to the tower at the peak of Old Speck, and right will take you along the AT to Speck Pond Campsite and Speck Pond. On this day, we were short on time, so we decided to venture to the tower for the views and some lunch. If you’re afraid of heights, I don’t recommend you climb the tower, but know that it’s very sturdy with a viewing platform and rails. At the top you’ll see the most amazing 360-degree view of Grafton Notch, as well as the Mahoosucs which rise from the west. Jackie and I take a lot of pictures enjoy the nature along the trail and stop to chat with several thru-hikers, so our total time on the mountain that day was 6 hours. Remember to plan and let someone know where you’re planning to hike. Enjoy your time in our great outdoors.

Walking trails and hikes
A hiker crossing one of the many bridges that the AMC builds into the side hills of ledge to ensure hiker safety. (Photo by Cherri Crockett) Whether you’re looking for riverside trails right in the village or challenging mountain hikes, the Bethel area has it all. Here are some examples of easier walks/hikes: Bethel Pathway. This gravel/paved trail runs alongside the Androscoggin River and is within easy walking distance of Bethel Village. It crosses the river over a recreational bridge. Along the trail are a
skatepark, playground and picnic area. Mount Will, 3.3 miles total: This loop hike in Bethel and Newry is one of the recreational gems of the Western Mountains. Two outlooks beckon. The northern viewpoint is reached via a selfguided nature trail. Continue along the circuit to the southfacing cliff, which overlooks Bethel’s broad river valley and
its fertile farmlands. With a binocular, hikers can identify many buildings in Bethel Village. The Roost, 1.0 miles total: This prominent ledge south of Gilead, in the White Mountain National Forest, boasts an elevation of less than 1,400 feet -- small by Western Maine standards -- but the vistas are more extensive than many that require far more exertion. The view to the southwest takes in much of the newly designated Wild River Wilderness area, with New Hampshire’s Carter Range forming the backdrop. Step Falls Trail, off Route 26 in Newry, about 8 miles north of the Route 2/26 intersection, runs along Wight Brook, with swimming holes and water cascades. Maggie’s Nature Trail in Greenwood is a network of woods trails with views from ledges.
Rumford Whitecap Mountain Preserve (Mahoosuc Land Trust) in Rumford. Two scenic trails. Buck’s and Lapham Ledges in Woodstock, with views of surrounding lakes and ponds. Round Mountain and Albany Mountain trails in Albany Township. The Cataracts, a short trail running along Frye Brook in Andover.
Examples of longer hikes:
Bald Mountain, 3.2 miles total: This spectacular cliff in Woodstock overlooks several remote ponds. The footpath passes near scenic Little Concord Pond before briskly climbing an attractive wooded ridge to the open summit. Many people continue from Bald Mountain to the broad, ledgy peak of Speckled Mountain, which lies 1.3 miles beyond.
Puzzle Mountain, 6.4 miles total: The Grafton Loop Trail, although constructed only a few years ago, is quickly becoming one of the most popular hikes in the region. The initial 3.2-mile segment climbs to the summit of Puzzle Mountain in Newry after crossing a series of open ledges. The best views are to the west, with the Mahoosuc Range and the two peaks of Baldpate dominating the horizon. Some of these trips involve rugged footing and walking atop dramatic cliffs and drop-offs. Hikers should be prepared with sturdy footwear and waterproof clothing. They should carry lunch and water as well as detailed maps and hiking guides. A great reference tool for hikes in the Bethel region can be found at mahoosucpathways.org.

There are many ponds in this region that produce brook trout, brown trout, togue, splake, landlocked salmon, bass, pickerel and perch. In most cases a boat is necessary. In neaby Locke’s Mills (Route 26, 5 miles east of Bethel) both North and South Ponds produce good fish, as does Lake
For years the state of Maine has been float stocking the Androscoggin River from Gilead to Bethel with rainbow and brown trout. The Androscoggin has fairly consistent action for rainbows, brookies, browns and landlocked salmon between April and June. As with most trout water, the action picks up again in September when the water cools. West of Bethel, the clear, cold water of the Wild River joins with the tea-colored Androscoggin, forming a seam. Trout usually hold in the seam. East of Bethel, the mouths of Bear and Sunday rivers have confluence that creates nice

Summer at Sunday River
Sunday River Resort may be best known for its winter persona: Excellent skiing for every skill level across eight interconnected mountain peaks and world-class events like The Dumont Cup—not to mention its storied snowmaking. But Sun-
day River is a four-season resort. From scenic Chondola rides to mountain biking and ziplining, Sunday River offers plenty of awesome activities during the summer, too. Yankee Magazine has ranked the Bethel area as New England’s top foliage venue come fall, and pointed to Sunday River’s Chondola as one of the best ways to take in all of the brilliant colors. During summer and fall, the Chondola whisks guests to the mid-mountain Peak Lodge, where views of the Mahoosuc and Presidential mountain ranges extend for miles. No trip to Maine’s Western Mountain region is complete without ogling the immaculate landscape from the top of the
Chondola. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a wedding while you’re up there. Covering all eight of Sunday River’s interconnected peaks, the Sunday River Mountain Bike Park is packed with over 20 miles of terrain that’s perfect for honing your downhill skills and learning new ones. Sunday River offers Learn-To Mountain Bike packages that last one or two hours for all ages. Kids can take advantage of a full fleet of technical Kona rental bikes and will appreciate the Chondola’s bike transport system. Beginners will love the Easy Tiger trail while those more daring souls will feel like veritable headliners after tackling the resort’s more technical trail, Rockstar.
Deep within one of Sunday River’s forests is a Zipline Tour unlike any other. Six lines, ranging from 100 to 300 feet in length, take zippers up and over a ravine and through a wooded wonderland. All thrills, no skills required. Sunday River’s Zipline Tour is perfect for the beginner or intermediate adventurist. Guides set the pace and scene by helping you into your harness and assisting you when loading and unloading at each line. The Tour’s grand finale is a zip down one of the resort’s two parallel Twin Zips, which are an impressive 750 feet long. Other summertime activities at Sunday River include a bungee trampoline, the rock
climbing wall, and a 9-hole disc golf course. Whether you opt to reach new heights or work on your Frisbee handicap, Sunday River’s roster of summer activities will definitely keep the whole family entertained. Tickets and rentals are available at Sunday River Sports in the South Ridge Lodge. For the competition-minded (partakers and spectators alike), Sunday River hosts the Tough Mountain Challenge mud race (July 26) and the annual North American Wife Carrying Championship (Oct. 11). Scenery by bike Western Maine’s varied topography makes for great road biking. Our wide river valleys offer seemingly endless miles of straight and level spinning, much of it through quiet woods and beautiful farmland. And if you’re up for a more physical challenge, head for the surrounding foothills, with great climbs and descents with lengths varying from a 3.5 mile climb up the Monkey Brook Road to the base of Jordan Bowl at Sunday River, to shorter routes right in Bethel village. Here are just a few examples:
In Bethel A short ride starts in Davis Park, right at the foot of Main Street. The park is easily reachable by bike from most Bethel area lodgings. The route follows the recreational pathway that starts here and winds for half a mile along the bank of the Androscoggin River. At the far end of the pathway is a multi-use recreational bridge that spans the river. You can then loop around
back down to the riverbank before returning toward the village. Longer rides starting in the village, include Route 35 toward Stoneham and Lovell, the Intervale/East Bethel roads/Route 26 loop, or Route 2 east toward Newry or Andover. All these rides offer several possible variations.
Sunday River Road A ride from the outskirts of Bethel out Route 2 and down the Sunday River Road will take you past Sunday River Ski Resort, the Artists Covered Bridge and out to the Letter S, a local swimming hole on the Sunday River. You can return by the same route with possible detours up to the Jordan Bowl Hotel, a challenging 3.5 mile climb.
North Road Another option from Route 2 just outside Bethel Village is the North Road, which offers long, mostly flat stretches through land devoted to agriculture and forestry, with occasional views over the nearby Androscoggin River.
North/South Ponds Loop
A 21-mile jaunt through nearby Greenwood and Woodstock, just south of Bethel, will take you through some lovely farmland and along the shores of South and North ponds.
The Notches For longer treks, cyclists can ride through the scenic Grafton and Evans Notches, both off Route 2. You can find information about other road rides and local mountain bike routes at Bethel Bicycle on Route 2 in Bethel or from the Chamber of Commerce in Bethel. Bethel Bicycle is a full service shop with expertise in all bicycle repairs, and most repair parts in stock. The shop also hosts group rides on Tuesday and Wednesday nights which can be a great way to find rides in the area. Call the shop at (207) 824-0100 for details. a glimpse of wildlife and birds -- after all, you are visiting their home and they just may be there when you are.
Wildlife Really lucky visitors may get to see a moose swim across a pond – it does happen! -- but more common is the sight of a moose wading along a shore, dunking its head to reach a tasty morsel. Stop by any of the ponds or streams in the national forest to look for moose and species of all sorts. Migrating song birds stop by and offer vocal performances for anyone out and about on an early summer morning, while birds of prey are ever-present over the ponds, streams, and clearings. Remember that all wild animals – even the seemingly nonchalant moose – are dangerous when approached by humans. Always maintain a safe and respectful distance.

Recreation Pass Wherever you go in the White Mountain National Forest, don’t forget your recreation pass. Many highuse trailheads and day-use areas in the National Forest require a recreation pass. Explore Western Maine history
Located in the heart of the Broad Street Historic District, the Bethel Historical Society invites visitors to explore the area’s colorful past at its Museum of Regional History. The Bethel Historical Society’s museum, library and archival collections include a broad range of materials documenting the rich heritage of western Maine and the White Mountain region of Maine and New Hampshire. The society’s two properties—the 1821 O’Neil Robinson House and the 1813 Dr. Moses Mason House—are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and contain
nine period rooms and six exhibit galleries. Throughout the year, the society provides a full calendar of lectures, exhibit openings, demonstrations, and educational activities for people of all ages. (Visit www.bethelhistorical.org for a listing of events.) Overlooking the historic Bethel Hill common, the O’Neil Robinson House is one of the town’s most visible 19th century landmarks. Regularly changing exhibits, a wellstocked Museum Shop and the society’s administrative offices are located here.

The Dr. Moses Mason House next door features a series of fully-furnished period rooms and two floors of Rufus Porter School murals that provide insight into how a prominent Bethel couple lived during the first half of the 19th century. Also located in this building are the society’s research library and an exhibit hall where special summer exhibits are offered and which is used at other times for lectures and special programs. The Bethel Historical Society is open year-round, Tuesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; also Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m., during July and August. It is closed Sunday and Monday, and Nov. 1 through Thanksgiving Day. During July and August (and by appointment at other times), the society’s period house museum is regularly open for tours.
HISTORIC BETHEL COMMON-The Bethel Common, shown here in a 19thcentury photo, is the centerpiece of the town’s Historic District. Ringing the common are the 1913 Bethel Inn, the old opera house and the famous homes of the Bethel Historical Society. The gazebo, built in recent history, is a popular site for summer concerts and weddings. The common is also the location of the annual Mollyockett Days Festival in July. The Historical Society offers self-guided walking tours of the common and the village.
This summer, visitors will be able to view a new exhibition, “Stitched Together in Time and Place: Valentine Family Quilts,” as well as selected portions of the documentary film “Why Quilts Matter: History, Art & Politics”

Tie the knot in Maine’s mountains A gazebo on a historic common, an old covered bridge, a mountaintop restaurant, and the 18th green on a beautiful golf course are just a few examples of the beautiful settings that draw brides and grooms to marry in the western mountains of Maine. The Artist’s Covered Bridge on the Sunday River Road in Newry is a popular spot. The gazebo on the Bethel Common, next to the century-old Bethel Inn and across from Bethel’s historic district, is another. For the more adventurous, options can include Table Rock ledge in Grafton Notch State Park, or a rock island in Greenwood’s North Pond. Weddings can be built around a theme weekend that incorporates such activities as golf, canoeing, hiking or fly fishing. Sunday River Ski Resort and the Bethel Inn Resort and Country Club both have beautiful golf courses. There are plenty of attractive indoor settings as

Tiny library is community hub
In the six years since reopening in a new location (but in the same building), the town of Hanover’s little library has become a community center.
In addition to the obvious offerings - books and other media - it’s a one-stop destination for a crafts corner shop, coffee, bottle redemption and even fishing worms.

The Gardner Roberts Memorial Library, located on Route 2 east of Bethel, has enjoyed a rebirth since the days when it was tucked into a tiny lot, squeezed up against the house next door, on the Howard Pond Road. The library, built in 1884, was moved in 2007 to the Town Office property on Route 2. Run by volunteers, the library is only open three days a week - but patrons and volunteers pack a lot of activity into those time slots. Much of it relates to checking out books, of course, but there are also social and fundraising events. As former volunteer librarian Barbara Stearns Gross said at the 2007 library dedication, the atmosphere at the library as far back as the 1950s has always been more casual than the stereotypical silence.

“We didn’t believe in being quiet in the library,” she said. That tradition continues today. On Tuesday afternoons, for example, local women gather around the table in the center of the room for coffee, socializing and crafts work. The crafts made there (and at home) are displayed in a corner and are sold to help pay library expenses. The ‘corner’ was started two years ago after volunteers continued to get requests for them following sales at the annual Fall Festival fundraiser, Peg Susbury said. “It’s been quite successful and we are able to make special orders of many items, for babies, children, adults, home decorations and holiday-specific decorations, for example,” she said. On Wednesdays there’s the “Dollar Book Bakery” bake sale,
where everything is a dollar - except for the baked beans, which go for $2 a pint. “We also offer coffee,” said Susbury. Then there are the more unusual fundraising activities. People can drop off their redeemable bottles, which Bob Susbury returns and then gives the proceeds to the library. More recently - since the closing of the nearby variety store - the library has begun offering refrigerated fishing worms for sale. Another fundraiser is the annual Fall Festival in October, with craft, book and bake sales, lunch, and raffles. Peg said the library volunteers and board are grateful for the support they receive. “We may have a small corps of volunteers, but when we are in need, the community opens its heart and is at our doorstep,” she said. “How lucky we are.”

An old train depot and a one-room school Visitors to Maine entering the state on Route 2 from New Hampshire will almost immediately have the chance to stop and experience a bit of local history in Gilead. The Gilead Historical Society has brought back to life two of the town’s old buildings – one of which had moved far away for a significant period of time. The 1851 Gilead Railroad Depot is believed to be the oldest rail-related structure in Maine and among the oldest in the United States. Step inside and see the old pot-bellied stove where train travelers used to warm themselves as they waited. On the walls and in cases are many old photos showing rail travel from a bygone era. The building had served as a depot until 1893, when it was moved to the east to

be used for other rail-related purposes until 1991. When the railroad decided to do away with the old depot, a historyminded purchaser bought and moved it to Auburn, Maine, some 60 miles away. In 2011 the Gilead Historical Society moved it back to Gilead to society property and restored it. Next door is the old oneroom Gilead Schoolhouse,
built in 1903. A visit inside reveals old pupil desks, maps, books and other items. This building moved to its present location from a half mile down the road, where it stood originally as a school and was later used as a country store. In 2009, when the state planned to reroute Route 2 right through the building, the historical society moved and restored it.
The buildings are open May through October on most Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and by appointment (call 207-836-2987).

Summer/Fall Events Calendar Music and art flourish
Below is a sampling of the organized activities planned for this spring and summer in the Bethel area. New events are added all the time, so for the latest information and listings, be sure to check out the Community Calendar in The Bethel Citizen. Please see the PHONE / CONTACT DIRECTORY at the end of this calendar for all contact information not listed below.
MAY
The Bethel region has a variety of artists: painters, glass blowers, fiber artists, metal sculptors, wood carvers and many more. Their work can be found at area shops and at local summer festivals. Other artists, both local and visiting, fill the summer air with their music. The village Common in Bethel is the scene of much artistic and musical activity. Early July brings the Bethel Art Fair (July 5) with exhibiting artists, live performers and delicious food. Two weeks later the common comes alive again with arts, crafts and entertainment on MollyOckett Days (July 19 and 20), the biggest local festival of the season. In August there’s a free bandstand concert series on the Common every Sunday. Down Main Street from the Common, “Hoot Night” is a weekly open-mic event in the basement of an historic inn that draws talent from near and far. For a listing of the many local art, music and cultural activities see the Calendar of Events in this publication or go to bethelmaine.com.

Where to
Eat in the Area
The small-town Bethel area boasts more than its share of restaurants. After a day of sightseeing or recreating in the beautiful Western Maine mountains, you can choose from fine or casual American cuisine at more than a dozen local restaurants. Want ethnic options? Try a Chinese, Italian or Korean/ Japanese restaurant. And for pizza lovers, there are more than a half-dozen menus offered. The Bethel area has something for everyone’s taste. 22 Broad Street at the Gideon Hastings House
“One of the best BBQ joints in the state. It is a perfect roadside dive, just as BBQ shacks should be... you just can’t help but stop the car as the smell of slow cooked pork and beef brisket permeate the air around you... Overall I think this is arguably the best BBQ I have had in Maine and I will certainly be a repeat customer when I’m in town.”
