Welcome to Bethel a must play destination in the western mountains of Maine

Mountains of slopes for downhill skiing and snowboarding, miles of trails for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling, plenty of off-piste territory for telemarkers and other back-country enthusiasts, the western mountain region of Maine has it all when it comes to opportunities for winter fun in the great outdoors. The town of Bethel is a natural hub, affording easy access to the full spectrum of outdoor activities and, when day is done, all the après amenities you could wish for to complete your visit. Visitors have been enjoying the natural beauty of Bethel for well over a century, and using the town as a gateway to the rugged White and Mahoosuc mountains. We know you’ll enjoy a visit to the area, and we hope this publication will give you a taste of what’s in store for you here. The advertisers you will find in these pages will all do their best to make your visit even more enjoyable. When you’re here, pick up a copy of The Bethel Citizen newspaper, which hits the stands on Thursdays. You’ll find the latest information on what’s happening throughout the area. Glide along on miles of peaceful western Maine trails

There’s no better way to enjoy the beauty of the snowy Maine woods and fields than on a pair of cross-country skis. The Bethel region provides many choices of terrain spread across three Nordic ski areas. And there’s no need to choose just one for a day of skiing – they offer combined day tickets as well as season passes. Carter’s Cross Country Ski Center

This is one of two cross-country ski areas owned by David and Anne Carter. David, a former ski racer, grew up in Bethel. He has designed some of his advanced trails to offer a few challenges to the skilled skier. Carter’s is located on the Intervale Road, 3.5 miles from Route 26. The center offers a mix of gentle scenic terrain along the banks of the Androscoggin River on the west side of the road, along with more advanced and challenging trails that head up Farwell Mountain to the east. The entire Presidential and Mahoosuc ranges can be seen from the eastern trails. There are 60 kilometers of trails, 40 of which are groomed for skating and classical. The rest are groomed for a 500-acre backcountry experience on the mountain. They also have some more challenging ungroomed terrain for the avid backcountry skier or snowshoer. For beginners, there is a new trail for this year to go with two added last season.

The large proportion of north-facing trails at higher elevations (up to 1,700 feet) ensure more consistent snow throughout the season. Skiers may also take a break in a yurt-style warming hut, or rest and relax with family and friends at one of the many rustic cabins, located right on the trail system. Carter’s recently built a two-story addition to the existing lodge, with a fully-equipped cross-country ski shop offering a full line of retail items, including backcountry, touring and racing skis, as well as snowshoes. They also offer rentals and lessons. A new feature is back-country ski rentals with wider skis, and backcountry boots and bindings with more stability and control. The Carters also built a beautiful “Great Room” on the second floor of the addition, with cathedral ceiling and many windows. In this room is an extensive collection of unique cross-country wood skis dating back 100 years to the great Norwegians. Skiers and snowshoers can also enjoy hot drinks and soups before or after hitting the trails. Opening day is expected to be in early December.

Bethel Nordic Ski Center at the Bethel Inn Resort

Located downtown, the Bethel Nordic Ski Center at the Bethel Inn is a classic New England cross-country ski center located in The Bethel Inn Resort. The Nordic Center offers 40 kilometers of cross-country ski and snowshoe trails. Exquisitely tracked and affording full skate lanes, the trails are fun and enjoyable. The terrain varies from wooded trails in mature white pines to sunny fields with views of the Mahoosuc mountain range. The center is open daily from Dec. 15 well into the end of March. Trail fees are $18 a day with pricing ranges for seniors and students. Several season-pass options and group packages are available. The Ski Center has a full-service ski shop with retail and rental equipment featuring Fischer Cruising Skis and Tubbs snowshoes. Ski lessons are available daily, taught by PSIA certified ski instructors. Just steps from the Nordic Center, the family friendly Millbrook Tavern & Grille offers a perfect spot for lunch, dinner, or relaxing après-ski. Winter events include the NENSA Women’s Ski Day, Corkscrew Chase Pursuit Race, introductory Biathlon Clinic and Race, and the ever popular Troll Trolling. For more information contact the Bethel Nordic Ski Center at (207) 824-6276 andwww.caribourecreation.com, and The Bethel Inn Resort at (207) 824-2175 and www.bethelinn.com.

Outdoor Center at the Sunday River Inn

Located on the Mountain Explorer bus route just half a mile from the downhill slopes of Sunday River Resort, the Outdoor Center at the Sunday River Inn offers 35 kilometers of expertly groomed trails for skiers of all ages and abilities. A favorite with families is the gentle 5k trip to the Artists’ Covered Bridge over the Sunday River. Built in 1872 and beautifully preserved, the bridge makes a wonderful picnic rest and photo destination. And the popular snow play area in the field adjacent to the center, a favorite for kids and parents alike, features two practice hills. The Outdoor Center offers a warm and inviting lodge, where you can purchase your trail passes, get trail information, rent ski and snowshoe equipment, and sit and enjoy your lunch in the sunny eating area or on the spacious deck.

On Friday join other skiers for a Night Ski. Ski by lantern to a marshmallow roast and a reading of The Cremation of Sam McGee. 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Center will open in mid-December. For more information call 207-8240348; e-mail info@theoutdoorcenter.net or go to www.theoutdoorcenter.net/#!

In the greater region

With its many trails and ski centers, Bethel is a great cross-country skiing destination. To add a day trip to your outings, consider Great Glen Trails, located at the base of Mt. Washington on Route 16 in Pinkham Notch, Gorham, N.H., less than an hour from Bethel. For more information call (603) 466-2333 or visit www. GreatGlenTrails.com.

What’s new at Sunday River

Sunday River Resort announced back in April that it will benefit from $5.7 million in capital investments for the coming 2013/14 season. Resort enhancements include snowmaking upgrades, the debut of T72 — a new 15-acre terrain park trail, and Camp — a brand new resort restaurant. Additional projects include roadwork into The Glades at Ridge Run real estate development, 60 acres of new and enhanced glades, and lodging upgrades to resort hotels and condominiums.

Snowmaking Upgrades For this coming winter, Sunday River has installed 224 new energy-efficient SV10 Impulse snowguns manufactured by HKD Snowmakers. As part of the resort’s commitment to improved snowmaking, Sunday River began converting its older snowmaking equipment to SV10s back in 2010. Last year, the resort installed 300 SV10s across Locke Mountain, White Cap, and Barker Mountain. Trails with this year’s new SV10s include: Lollapalooza, Rogue Angel, T72, and the upper half of Risky Business.

Terrain Park Trail Sunday River will also debut T72— a 15-acre dedicated terrain park trail that will feature a jump line, 500-foot superpipe, and rail park. This trail is being designed in

2013 I 2014

partnership with X Games medalist and 2014 Olympic hopeful, Simon Dumont, and Snow Park Technologies (SPT) best known for their work on X Games courses. T72 is located on North Peak between the resort’s Dream Maker and 3D trails – a site recommended to the resort by SPT – and is serviced by the North Peak Express and Chondola highspeed lifts. Based on an ideal pitch for freestyle terrain and a straight fall line, T72 will encompass 15 acres and measure 200 feet wide and 2,300 feet in length. The upper elevation of the trail will be 1,970 feet and the lower elevation will be 1,260 feet for a vertical drop of 710 feet. T72 replaces the Rocking Chair Terrain Park and Superpipe located on Barker and Locke Mountains, and is the new home of Simon Dumont’s signature event — the Dumont Cup (March 28-29, 2014).

The most dependable snow in New England Home to the most dependable snow in New England, Sunday River reinforces this reputation with the allocation of nearly $1 million of its $5.7 million capital enhancement budget in the form of 224 new HKD SV10 Impulse snowguns for this season. Since 2010, Sunday River has been investing in HKD SV10 Impulse snowguns which currently make up 35 percent of the resort’s total arsenal. This year’s investment covers four of the resort’s 135 trails: Lollapalooza, Rogue Angel, T72 (a new terrain park trail), and the

upper half of Risky Business. To date, Sunday River can cover 95 percent of its trail system with snowmaking. The trails picked for this year’s investment ensure that Sunday River’s biggest terrain park to date – T72 – will be well equipped to build the resort’s biggest jump line, as well as a 18foot superpipe. The other three trails, some of the resort’s most popular, will produce quality snow coverage when needed. Thanks to the HKD SV10 Impulses’ ability to use up to 90 percent less compressed air during favorable temperatures than older

snowguns, Sunday River was able to open up more terrain at a faster rate during last year’s opening weekend and was able to provide better ski-in/ski-out access during the busy holiday season for guests staying at its Grand Summit Hotel. Part of Sunday River’s long-term vision, this $1 million dollar investment moves the resort closer to its goal of doubling its water capacity and pump capability all while becoming more energy efficient. Since 2007, Sunday River has benefited from Boyne Resort’s support with over $35 million in capital

enhancements including the purchase of Boyne Low Energy Fan Guns, New England’s only Chondola, and night skiing. For more information on Sunday River’s snowmaking capabilities, visit www. sundayriver.com Photo: Sunday River Resort

The Mountain Explorer The Mountain Explorer bus service is a convenient way to get back and forth between Sunday River and Bethel Village, day or night. For the 2013-2014 season, the Mountain Explorer seasonal bus service between Bethel and Sunday River Resort plans to operate daily from Dec. 20 through March 30, then April 4 through 6. This is contingent upon the amount of local funding raised, and is subject to change. Mountain Explorer schedules will be available at local businesses, at the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce, at Sunday River, in the “Sunday River This Winter” newspaper and online at www.mountainexplorer.org as a link from the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce and Sunday River websites, and through links from many other area business’ websites. Stops include numerous hotels and restaurants between downtown Bethel and Sunday River. The free shuttle service relieves traffic congestion, reduces pollution and promotes safety through providing a reliable designated-driver option. The Mountain Explorer is operated by Western Maine Transportation Services in cooperation with and funding provided through the Maine Department of Transportation, Federal Transit Administration, the towns of Bethel and Newry, Sunday River, The Bethel Inn & Resort, local businesses and other sponsors, along with the Mountain Explorer Marketing Advisory Committee.

Winter in Western Maine

2013 I 2014

The Best of Bethel Each year, Sunday River Resort asks people who love to eat, drink, ski, shop and generally have a good time in the Bethel area to pick the best places to do all of them. It’s the “Best of Bethel” online poll, conducted on the resort’s website (www.sundayriver. com). The results are published late in the ski season in the monthly “Sunday River This Winter” on-mountain newspaper. For a sampling of the best Bethel had to offer in 2013, read on, then come visit and decide and vote yourself. This winter the poll will offer 30 voting categories to choose from. They will be announced in Sunday River This Winter, so be sure to watch for the publication at the resort. BY SARAH DEVLIN

Best Breakfast: Crossroads

Very few locals can resist this gem next to Rite-Aid and across from the big intersection between Parkway Road and Route 2. The sign beckons on a chilly snowy morning and the lot is generally full of pickup trucks, a couple imported cars with ski racks, and occasionally one deputy vehicle. You can’t get much more local than that.

Best Bar—Late Night: Funky Red Barn

The FRB is a wonderful family-run, family-friendly dinner spot, but at night it transforms into the Fun Fun Funky! It is a fact that a vast majority of people can’t find the Funky Red Barn unless they’ve had a few cocktails. There’s something about sobriety that renders Summer Street in downtown Bethel completely invisible to the naked eye. Needless to say, late-night FRB sees mostly foot traffic via the Bethel Explorer (the free Bethel region shuttle), or by way of Suds or Kowloon down the street. When people do find it, they also find plenty of pool, live music and dancing.

Best Wings: Rooster’s Roadhouse

The wings, miraculously infused with flavor and deep fried, are a nice complement to a pint of beer and good conversation. And, we all know, after a long day skiing the mountain, nothing beats a pile o’ wings.

Best International Meal: Cho Sun

Best Nachos: Foggy Goggle

If you order nachos from the Goggle at Sunday River, make sure you have an Adam Richman appetite (look it up), or have your entire family and most of your friends with you. These guys are not kidding around. The nachos are piled high with layers of cheese and vegetables. If you’re feeling frisky, you can order them up with chili or pulled chicken, with a fabulous view of the Chondola and South Ridge Express, to boot.

Best Bar—Après Ski: Foggy Goggle

The Gog is in a perfect location for après, what with all the music and the Best in Bethel nachos and the fact that it’s sitting at the base of the Chondola. The South Ridge Lodge establishment got the most votes because people know: après is après and, frankly, if you’re in a bar with your ski boots on, you really should be next to a ski slope, no?

If you think you can’t find international food in Bethel, you haven’t driven down Main Street or spent much time in South Ridge Lodge. Cho Sun serves the most delicious sushi, even for people who live directly on the coast. And, their Korean and Japanese dishes, such as Champong (a spicy and flavorful fish stew that made one diner, as we witnessed, literally suck on her chopsticks) or Udon Noodles (thick, wheat-based noodles with broth and vegetables) are to die for. Or, if you’re feeling frisky, take a stab at owner Pok Sun’s amazing Korean BBQ. Continued on page 8

Best of Bethel, continued

Best Food on the Run: Good Food Store

The Good Food Store won this category straight up, but if we included all the votes for the little orange barbecue trailer on their parking lot, it would be considered a landslide. The Good Food Store offers up homemade heat-and-eat meals, like the most delicious Moroccan Chicken in the world or comforting Shepard’s Pie or even a Pork Riesling that is amazing, especially if you eat it with a side of arugula. Yes, they carry arugula. And they have a wall of herbs and spices. And wine and yogurt and yummy cheese and homeopathic remedies and and and…. Just swing into the little white house across from the Irving—which, not incidentally, is how one voter described it.

Best Beer Selection: Sud’s Pub

Best Bar Menu: Rooster’s Roadhouse

Early season, late season, and latenight, you can generally find a haddock sandwich, fire-roasted veggie burgers, chicken fingers, nachos, wings…basically all the grub you crave when you sit at the pub, in an ideal setting: a dark room with wood walls, plenty of friendly faces, and usually a game on the tellie. And, the place smells entirely of free popcorn. It’s fantastic. So, if you’re hankering for a late-night pub snack, head over to Rooster’s and walk upstairs. As they like to say, “If the lights are on and the door is open, we are serving food!”

Best Bump Run: 3D

Suds is a great place to hang out with friends, to hide alone in the dark, or to meet fresh faces at the bar. It’s a perfect little pub in the basement of the Sudbury Inn on Main Street. With 29 draught beers on tap, from all-time favorites like Bass Ale and Guiness to such locally brewed beers as Sebago Red, Gritty’s Blackfly Stout, Gritty’s Best Bitter, Bar Harbor’s Cole Porter, or Geary’s HSA (which will knock you right off your barstool if you’re not careful) along with Vermont-brewed Long Trail and Magic Hat #9 and New Hampshire’s Tuckerman’s Alt, you can see why Suds continues to win this category. Cheers!

3D offers consistent, intermediate bumps for the novice who wants to move beyond that little bump run on skiers’ right on Dream Maker and for the expert who wants his/her last run off the Chondola or North Peak Express to have a little texture. We are sad to see the access road lose its status as Best Bump Run—the state went and paved it last year and ruined all the fun—but it’s nice to see the Barker parking lot picking up some votes.

Best Glade: Blind Ambition

Another popular trail on the mountain, Blind Ambition, is wide open and allows for people to practice in the trees without having to dip into the scarier elements of Wizard’s Gulch or [gulp] Chutzpah. It also keeps traffic light in the more advanced terrain and makes room for those not so advanced to hone their tree skills with an easy out onto Lollapalooza. On a snow day? Listen for the hoots and hollers in Blind Ambition and you’ll know this is what it’s all about.

Best Winter Hike: Mount Will

The Mt. Will trail, an intermediate hike about two miles past the Sunday River Access Road that opens to remarkable views of Bethel Village, won for a third year in a row. But, it would not have won if we tallied up all the responses from people who voted for the walk from the car to the lodge or from one bar to another. It happens every year. “Down the driveway to Ridge Run,” “From the South Ridge Lodge to the Phoenix,” “From the car to the lodge,” and “The one from my room to ski check.”

Best Annual Event: Parrothead

Parrothead wins every year. It’s Sunday River’s most popular event and it might be the most well known. But, there are definitely some sleepers on the list creeping up to possibly take the title in the coming years. While very few of us can resist our Jimmy Buffett festival to welcome spring, such summer festivals as Bethel’s Mollyockett Days and our very own Tough Mountain Challenge as well as the Wife-Carrying Championship during Fall Fest got a serious number of votes.

Mush! Traveling by dogsled through miles of white frozen wilderness is a never-to-beforgotten experience. Bethel-area dogsledding services offer a wide variety of trips near and far, ranging in length from a single day to more than a week. At New England Dogsledding at the Telemark Inn, a remote wilderness lodge nestled at the base of Caribou Mountain at the edge of the White Mountain National Forest, proprietor Steve Crone has dozens of canine critters and decades of experience. Crone uses primarily Alaskan Huskies. The bloodlines in his kennel include many successful veterans of the Iditarod, the famed 1,150-mile dogsled race between Anchorage and Nome. Most of their dogsledding business is two- to three-hour rides through the White Mountain National Forest, which virtually surrounds their own property, which is about a 15-minute drive from Bethel’s Main Street. All-day options include frozen Umbagog Lake — about 40 minutes northwest of Bethel — and its thousands of acres of surrounding timberlands in Maine and New Hampshire. Guests typically begin riding in the sled, but Crone encourages them to “get out of the basket,” trade places with the guide, step on the back runners and try mushing themselves. Most relish the experience. As a trained ecologist, Crone also encourages his guests to appreciate wildlife along the trail and absorb the spectrum of wilderness values inherent in the sport. New England Dogsledding also offers an “Inn-to-Inn” dogsledding tour that will take in the scenic beauty of both western Maine and northern New Hampshire. Tours will range from three to five days and follow trails through Upton, Maine, Errol and Dixville Notch, N.H., and the Connecticut Lakes region of New Hampshire, stopping overnight at inns along the way. The trips are still in the planning stages. For more information, visit www.NewEnglandDogsledding.com or www. TelemarkInn.com. Another option for getting outside with some great dogs is skijoring — where a crosscountry skier uses canine power to zip across the landscape over hill and dale. Most skijorers start with one dog that’s been harnessed and attached with an elastic rope. More skilful skiers who want to ramp up the power — and can handle speeds of 25 miles per hour — can opt for a two-dog team. Although most of Crone’s guests are daytrippers, his Telemark Inn Wilderness Lodge also provides a unique wilderness experience for the multiple day “Learn To Mush” Packages. Built in the late 1800s as a wilderness getaway for a wealthy sportsman, the lodge boasts five comfortable bedrooms plus a common area with a huge mineral-stone fireplace. The dining room features homecooked meals crafted from organic local ingredients. New England Dogsledding has been fea-

For more information call (207) 836-2703 or (207) 731-6888 or visit www.NewEnglandDogsledding.com or www.NewEnglandRiding andDriving.com on the Internet. At Mahoosuc Guide Service in Newry, individuals, couples, families or larger groups can book wilderness dogsledding trips, or groups can arrange for special contract adventures. Situated on a 60-acre farm with spectacular views of the imposing Mahoosuc Mountains, MGS also offers a bed-and-breakfast plus a 16-person lodge. Mahoosuc Guide Service is operated by two Master Maine Guides, Polly Mahoney and Kevin Slater. Mahoney has three decades of experience with dogsledding and has raised and trained huskies for a quarter century. Slater, who crafts the company’s sleds from native Maine ash, has been a professional guide for more than 30 years. He has traveled thousands of miles in the far reaches of Canada with native North Americans, an experience which gives him a deep understanding and respect for the people and their culture. Both Mahoney and Slater are former instructors with Outward Bound and have earned multiple certifications in first aid and wilderness medicine. Mahoney and Slater maintain three semipermanent camps — canvas wall tents with wood stoves — in remote locations. Overnight and weekend trips are held in the Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge (where MGS operates under a special-use-permit), about 30 miles northwest of Bethel, while longer adventures visit more distant sections of the Maine wilderness and Canada. Mahoney also leads women-only trips, where the emphasis is on sharing experiences, working cooperatively and creating a supportive social environment. For those not interested in the winter camping aspect of mushing, Mahoosuc also offers one-half day and full-day tours on their own trail system. They’re not snowmobile trails, so the distances traveled (typically seven to sixteen miles) will vary depending on snow and trail conditions. On full-day trips a hot lunch is provided and there is plenty of time to pet your team of Yukon huskies. For more information: www.mahoosuc.com or (207) 824-2073. Photo: New England Dogsledding

Celebrating 25 years at Mahoosuc Guide Service They raise their sled dogs from puppies and keep them throughout the dogs’ entire lives. They take their clients on weeklong trips to northern Canada. They make their own dogsleds and canoes. Those are the things that, as they mark their 25th year of business, Kevin Slater and Polly Mahoney of Mahoosuc Guide Service say set them apart from other guide/ dogsledding businesses. Polly and Kevin were into sled dogs and guiding long before they met each other. Polly grew up in South China, Maine. When she graduated from high school, she said, “I knew I wanted to go to Alaska.” So off she went, looking for adventure. She worked for the Park Service there for about a year, then moved on to the Yukon Territory of Canada. “I was introduced to sled dogs by my ex-husband, and we were being filmed in

movies: “Death Hunt” with Charles Bronson in Canmore, Alberta and the Walt Disney Production “Never Cry Wolf” with Charlie Martin Smith in Atlin, B.C. and southern Yukon Territory of Canada,” she said. “I was a horse person already so it was a natural switch from horses to dogs.” Kevin had also left his hometown after high school in the coal-mining country of the Pennsylvania-West Virginia border region. “I didn’t want to dig coal,” he said. Instead he went to northern Maine, where he worked at a sportsman’s camp with a guide who was nearing the end of his career. “The best education I ever had was working with him the last two years he was guiding,” said Kevin, who has a bachelor’s degree from Penn State and a master’s from the University of Maine. “He could go out in the woods with an ax and

a crooked knife and make anything he wanted.” Kevin also ended up in Alaska for a short time, but it was long enough to get into the sled dog business. “After spending two months guiding on Denali, I was hanging around Talkeetna when a guy asked me if I was sticking around for the winter. He offered me a job helping him guide fiveto seven-day dogsled trips.” After moving on and getting his college degrees, in

the mid-1980s he came to work as the program director at Outward Bound in Newry. In 1989 a high school friend of Polly’s heard that OB was going to start a dogsled program and suggested she apply. Kevin hired her. “Those were the good old days when I was her boss,” he jokes now. Polly brought her Yukon huskies with her. In addition to sharing an

interest in sled dogs, said Polly, “we both had a dream of having our own guide services.” A year later, they started Mahoosuc Guide Service in Newry. Early dogsledding trips stayed mostly local, on Lake Umbagog. In the warmer seasons they guided canoe trips. Inspired by the work of his mentor guide from his late teen years, Kevin also began making his own dogsleds and canoes from wood. In 1992 they began taking longer winter trips to the Hudson Bay region. There they built relationships with native guides from the Cree and Inuit peoples. As a result, Polly and Kevin have since worked with those guides, who also provide MGS clients a glimpse into their cultures.

The dogs

The 40+ MGS dogs (six teams) are descended from the dogs Polly brought home with her from the Yukon. That’s 35 years worth of lineage. Polly and Kevin do, however, mix in some new bloodlines periodically. In breeding sled dogs, said Kevin, “most mushers have racing bloodlines. But we don’t really care about going fast.” Instead, he said, they breed for dogs that can move a heavy sled. He compared them to draft horses.

The dogs’ weight generally runs from 60 to 90 pounds. Because of their strength and endurance, only five dogs are needed to pull a sled. Polly and Kevin begin teaching the pups at about six months old, and by a year they are ready to start sled dog duty. Generally, the dogs work until about 10 or 11, then go into retirement. Unlike some mushers who quickly put retired dogs to sleep or find other homes for them, said Polly, their dogs live out their lives at MGS. “We get so attached,” said Polly. “We have nine retired dogs right now,” a number that is greater than their average. During the sledding offseason, all the dogs get to roam and play in large fenced-in fields on the property. The huskies can live to be 12 to 17, Polly said. When they pass on, they are laid to rest beneath personalized wood markers in the MGS cemetery on the property. The couple doesn’t plan on retiring anytime soon. “I love being outside, I like meeting new people, and I like working with my dogs,” said Polly. “I can do all of that with this job.” Gesturing toward the cemetery, Kevin said, “I’ll keep going until I’m planted over there with the dogs.”

Maine Adaptive Sports Sunday River is where it all started for Maine Adaptive and is the center of the organization’s largest winter operations including daily lessons and specialty programs including the nationallyrenowned alpine race team and the Veterans No Boundaries program (now in its ninth year serving veterans and active-duty military personnel with physical disabilities). Starting right after New Year’s Day through early April an average of 30 participants aged four and over with physical disabilities, arrive daily at the facility next to the Sundance Trail at Sunday River to take lessons in skiing and snowboarding. To help participants with transportation issues, Maine Adaptive sponsors weekly bus service to and from Portland and can be easily arranged by calling the office. Maine Adaptive has developed several exciting partnerships with various school districts, camps, rehabilitation facilities and service/care providers to engage more people with disabilities throughout New England in adaptive skiing and recreation, and many of those partnerships have yielded additional opportunities for participants new to Sunday River and/ or Maine Adaptive. Programs planned for 2014

include Camp No Limits, a camp program for children with limb loss and their families, a Mono Ski Camp for sit skiers, and the New England Blind Athletic Association. Beyond the daily general programs, additional specific events and program highlights this winter include:

Veterans No Boundaries Winter Program Jan. 31 to Feb. 3, 2014

Each winter since 2005, Maine Adaptive brings together disabled veterans and active duty personnel including their families and caregivers to an inspiring weekend of camaraderie and self-discovery at Sunday River through the Veterans No Boundaries winter program. The program is open to wounded warriors, active duty personnel and other veterans with permanent disabilities from throughout the country.

NEVI Fest Feb. 9-13, 2014

Maine Adaptive will be welcoming visually impaired skiers, their guides and families from throughout the country to the slopes of Sugarloaf Mountain Resort in Carrabassett Valley, Maine. The New England Visually Impaired Festival (NEVI) is designed to create a unique social, recre-

ational and educational experience for skiers of all levels. Skiers will have the opportunity to develop their skiing abilities on all levels of terrain with their own guides or qualified festival volunteers. Skills enhancement will also be available for guides from Certified PSIA Adaptive and experienced clinicians.

29th Annual Ski-A-Thon March 29, 2014

The Ski-A-Thon is the biggest single-day fundraiser in the State of Maine. It attracts hundreds of skiers, riders, volunteers, participants and sponsors from all around Maine and New England. Since 1985, it has been the largest source of revenue, generating approximately 65% of the funding to support Maine Adaptive’s year-round free adaptive programs.

Training for Volunteer Instructors

At the heart of Maine Adaptive are over 400

dedicated and passionate volunteers who donate their time and energy providing adaptive lessons to the people with disabilities they serve. Each fall, Maine Adaptive seeks additional skiers and riders of intermediate or above ability and the desire to share the sport with others. Training for new instructors takes place in October and November for the winter lesson season. Those interested in becoming volunteers should visit www.maineadaptive.org or call us at 207-824-2440.

Why “The Peak”

Since purchasing Shawnee Peak in 1994, Chet Homer has made it a point to always put money back into the mountain - all the while, keeping skiing affordable. This year, Homer put $1 million into the mountain, showing once again that planning for the future and listening to the customer are the most important pieces to the ski-area-ownership puzzle. College students save on unlimited skiing with a $199 college season pass. This is the best deal for students in the Northeast. Children 5 and under continue to ski free anytime at the Peak when

accompanied by a paying adult. Night skiing season pass is one of Shawnee’s most anticipated deals. The pass offers over 70 nights of skiing with no blackout dates regardless of the skiers age. Skiers and riders can ski from 4 p.m. until close Monday through Saturday and Sunday evenings during vacation weeks. For rental equipment, Shawnee offers parabolic rental skis including the new rocker skis and Burton snowboards. You CAN get there from here... on a snowmobile

With more than 10,000 miles of officially maintained sledding trails that traverse New England’s biggest state, Maine is a top destination for visiting snowmobile enthusiasts from all across America. It’s all about the trails and the connections. Situated on the flat Androscoggin River Valley, surrounded by hills and mountains, Bethel is a natural crossroads. And snowmobile trails radiate in all directions. Any direction is ideal for one-day trips that cover 75 to 150 total miles, typical for most sledders. Trails leading north of Bethel reach the Rangeley Lakes region via a choice of interesting routes. These include Grafton Notch, one of the most attractive mountain passes in the state, as well as an abandoned railroad grade.

Routes leading east of Bethel head into the Oxford Hills, a region characterized by smallish mountains — 1,500foot elevations are typical — that’s dotted with scattered small communities with whitesteepled churches. Two principal routes lead south to Lovell and Fryeburg and the broad Saco River Valley. The easiest and most direct follows an attractive low-elevation alignment, while the other climbs through remote and spectacular Evans Notch, a dramatic mountain pass that straddles the Maine-New Hampshire boundary. West of Bethel is New Hampshire and the White Mountains, tallest in the Northeast, and the gateway communities of Gorham and North Conway. Of course, there’s no reason to rack up major mileage on a snowmobile trip to Bethel. The regional trail system

is well maintained by snowmobile clubs. And the area’s amenities can’t be beat, including restaurants and motels with direct trail access and plenty of parking and maneuvering space for trailers. Check out mesnow. com/map.html for snowmobile maps.

Take a snowshoe trek through the beautiful western Maine woods Public trails

The Mount Will Trail, off Route 2 east of the Sunday River Road (across from the transfer station), provides a perfect snowshoe trek. Maintained by

the Bethel Conservation Commission, it allows access to great views. It is a 3¼-mile-long loop, and has some steep sections. Trail maps for Mount Will are available at the

Chamber of Commerce, and Bethel Town Office. Information on the White Mountain National Forest hiking trails, such as Caribou Mountain, the Patte Brook Road area

(including Crocker Pond and Albany Mountain) and Evans Notch is available at the USFS office (located on Route 16 south of Gorham, N.H.) These trails are all good choices, but the access roads are not generally plowed, so be prepared for a long trek just to get to the trailhead. The access roads themselves make nice treks, particularly Route 113 through Evans Notch, the upper part of the Sunday River Road on either side of the river, and the Patte Brook Road. If the road also serves as a snowmobile trail, be alert for approaching traffic. Remember to respect private property while on your trek. While there are vast public lands in the area, the White Mountain National Forest and Grafton Notch State Park, most land is private. Landowners are generous in allowing people recreational access. But maintaining public access is a fragile thing, threatened by abuse. Please treat the woods with respect.

Follow the critter tracks Snowshoes are a great way to follow the many kinds of animal tracks that abound in the winter woods of Maine. Since animals will move with ease around trees and brush, small snowshoes are more suitable than cross-country skis when tracking. A field guide to animal tracks is the only other piece of equipment needed. There are numerous good ones available, and some have interesting descriptions of the animals’ behaviors as well as track identification. With a good field guide,

you can learn to recognize the large track of a snowshoe hare, the tiny track, including tail markings, of a field mouse, or the doglike print of a lynx. Field guides are available at outdoor-recreation retailers in the area. Animal trackers need a place that is quiet, wooded, and has little human activity. To save energy, animals use established trails, such as cross-country ski or snowmobile trails, and stream beds in the winter. Local outdoor retailers as well as crosscountry ski center operators can suggest places to go for a quiet trek through the woods and a little eavesdropping into the lives of area wildlife.

FRESH AIR AND FRESH FISH

A favorite outdoor activity in western Maine is ice fishing, for trout, perch, pickerel, bass, cusk and other species. Tip-up traps (with flags that go up when the fish bite) and jigging (using a hand-held line) are the two basic techniques used by local fishermen. If you’re serious, an ice shack makes fishing more comfortable, but in any case, take plenty of clothing. Ice fishing requires a license, which is available from area town clerks; or for nonresidents, from many general stores. Before venturing out, be sure the ice is safe. For information online, go to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife at www.state.me.us/ifw/fishing/index.htm. Dates and time are subject to change due to inclement weather.
