The mountains, lakes and rivers of the Bethel area in Western Maine offer everything a visitor could wish for -- hiking, fishing, road and mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking and rafting, camping, rock-hounding, antiquing, horseback riding, as well two world-class golf courses. Even, if you’re so inclined, zip lining down a mountainside. And, at day’s end, fine lodging and dining. All set in the rugged Mahoosuc Range, the northern reach of the White Mountains. The Bethel area also provides a good base from which to visit recreational and scenic places in the greater region. These include the White Mountain National Forest, Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge, and a long stretch of the Androscoggin River as it winds from the Whites to the sea. You’ll find the towns of western Maine warm, welcoming and rich not only with their individual histories, but also with cultural and artistic energy. Summer is the perfect season to come see for yourself.

The Western Maine Landscape:
S
The perfect place to find falling water
The western Maine landscape of forested hillsides, deep valleys and granite mountaintops is the perfect place to find falling water. There are calm streams with deep pools for swimming, powerful waterfalls to admire, babbling brooks for walking along, and granite ledges that provide precarious platforms for jumping into swirling torrents of icy water. Please remember to treat them with respect. Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, and make memories that will last a lifetime.
Grafton Notch State Park Grafton Notch, along Route 26 North, or the Bear River Road, in Newry, is the home of several beautiful waterfalls. Step Falls, the first water fall here, is actually a series of waterfalls, slides,
cascades, and pools. Swimmers slip down the water slides into the small pools below. The colors of the pools vary from lime green to lemon yellow. When the afternoon sun warms the granite face of the falls, there is no finer place to enjoy a summer adventure. Consider bringing a rugged pair of cutoffs to swim in. Step Falls is notorious for shredding bathing suits. Frequently, the wearer is having too much fun to notice or care. Families with small children should be aware that there are many delightful places for them here, but there are also places that are dangerous, particularly in high water. Care and supervision are required. Step Falls is located on the Bear River Road eight miles north or US 2, and just before the entrance of the State Park. The park-

ing area is a smooth grassy area on the right, and is only marked by a small sign reading Wight Brook. From the parking area, the falls are .6 miles up a marked trail. The hike is not difficult, but proper footwear and drinking water are recommended. Step Falls is owned and operated by the Nature Conservancy, and operates on a carry in carry out basis. Just a bit up the road from Step Falls, Grafton Notch State Park offers two, and sometimes three, other waterfalls. Screw Auger Falls, carved by the water and silt from melting glaciers, it is a sculptural work of art. The water drops seven yards here, and the gorge is dangerous for swimming. It is, however, a delightful place for a picnic and geology lesson from the signs explaining how the falls were formed. Screw Auger Falls is handicap accessible. The parking area for the falls is clearly marked on the road. Mother Walker Falls, marked by a small sign still further up the road, is a treasure hunt. At first glance, it appears to be granite strewn ravine, there doesn’t seem to be a waterfall here at all. But by looking for the path upstream, you can enter the ravine to
find the waterfall and the cave behind it. Cascade Brook only lives up to its name after a heavy rain or in the spring thaws. If you happen on to the area at such a time, a hike up the Old Speck Trail. Follow the white blazes and keep left at the Eyebrow Trail fork. When the brook is running, it fans out in feathery cascades where the trail switchbacks intersect the brook. Keep going, and you’ll reach the top of Old Speck after 3.8 miles of hiking.
The Sunday River Valley
Sunday River, from Artist Bridge up, offers a variety of swimming holes, waterfalls, and hikes. Most of the land along Sunday River is privately owned, please treats it with respect. Artist Bridge, a covered bridge located on the Sunday River Road is worth a visit. Beneath the bridge, there are sandy banks and warm granite rocks for swimming. Frenchmen’s Hole is for the adventurous. Follow the Sunday River Road past the Artist Bridge until there you reach the dead end sign, turn left, cross two bridges (called Twin Bridges) and then take an immediate right. A few miles up the river there will

be a turn out to park in. Frenchmen’s is a waterfall with a cauldron beneath. This is prime jumping territory, a place for the wild at heart to test their mettle. Jump here at your own risk. Please treat the land with respect. The Wright Trail, at the end of the road, offers access to Goose Eye Mountain and the Mahoosuc Range. The first half-mile goes along Goose Eye Brook where there are many beautiful pools and scenic cascades.
White Mountain National Forest The White Mountain National Forest, in both Maine and New Hampshire, offers a wide variety of falling water. Here are two close to Bethel: Bog Brook is located on the Bog Road, off Rt. 2 in Gilead. If you walk down to the brook from the Caribou Trail parking area, there is a sweet swimming hole. While this swimming hole
is tame enough for the small fry, it’s cold. Evans Notch, Rt. 113 from Gilead, is cut by the Wild River and Hastings Brook from the top of the notch north to the Androscoggin. The Wild River is scenic, and the notch has many hiking trails along the river or into the mountains, where the many tributaries that feed Wild River tumble down.
Other area falls, gorges, etc. The scenic areas listed here are described in “The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer”, published by DeLorme: • Angel Falls, located in Township D, the largest drop in Maine; • The Cataracts, Andover West Surplus; • Coos Canyon, Byron, there is gold that you can pan for here; • Dunn Falls, Andover North Surplus; and • Kezar Falls Gorge, Lovell.

Scenic Paddles The Androscoggin Canoe Trail Eight access points along the beautiful Androscoggin River allow kayakers and canoeists to enjoy short or long paddles throughout the Bethel region. In summer months the trip is generally a gentle one, with plenty of opportunity to watch for moose, deer, eagles and other wildlife. There are some areas of rapids, so boaters should use caution along those stretches of the river. High water can also create swift currents. Because Route 2 generally follows the path of the river, most access points are right off the road. They include: the Shelburne Bridge off Meadow Road in New Hampshire (on the Maine/N.H. border); Bridge Street in Gilead; Newt’s Landing
off Ferry Road in West Bethel; Bethel Outdoor Adventure off Route 2; Davis Park off Route 26 in Bethel; Moran’s Landing off Route 2 in Hanover; Hanover Boat Launch off Route 2 in Hanover; Rumford Boat Launch off Route 2 in Rumford. Some are public while others are on private land. In all cases, please be respectful of the land and wildlife along the river by packing out trash, refraining from campfires and checking for invasive plants on your craft before putting in. (Note: be mindful of poison ivy, which is common along the riverbank). For more on paddling the river, go to http://mahoosuc.org/ androcanoe.html. For those who wish to rent their craft, kayaks and canoes (as
well as information) are available at Bethel Outdoor Adventure, located right on the Androscoggin, next to the Route 2 bridge in Bethel. Many lakes in the Bethel area also have public boat access, including Lake Christopher and North, South and Round ponds in Greenwood and Woodstock.
Other water bodies In addition to the Androscoggin River, the Saco River in southwestern Maine is a favorite of canoeists and kayakers. Larger lakes within an hour’s drive include Lake Umbagog, Richardson Lake, and Kezar Lake. Photos: D. MacKnight

Western Maine’s geography provides watersheds with an abundance of brooks, rivers and lakes. Within minutes of Bethel Village there are spots that produce brown trout, brook trout, rainbow trout and landlocked salmon.

sistent action for rainbows, brookies, browns and landlocked salmon between April and June. As with most trout water, the action picks up again in September when the water cools. West of Bethel, the clear, cold water of the Wild River joins with the tea-colored Androscoggin, forming a seam. Trout usually hold in the seam. Also worth noting is the annual stocking program that covers the upriver stretch of the Wild, running adjacent to Route 113. East of Bethel, the mouths of Bear and
Sunday rivers have confluence that creates nice sets of rips that hold trout and salmon. All of these locations can be reached in less than 20 minutes. Some of these lands are private; make sure you ask before you tread.

There are numerous ponds in this region that produce brook trout, brown trout, togue, splake, landlocked salmon, bass, pickerel and perch. In most cases, but not all, a boat is necessary. In nearby Locke Mills (Route 26, five

What To Do Around Bethel Surprise, it’s not what you think…
By Aranka Matolcsy Bethel is “Maine’s Most Beautiful Mountain Village” for good reason. Stunning vistas of high peaks flank rolling fields and flood plains along the rugged trail of the Androscoggin River, named deep-dwelling-river by the Native Wabanaki people who founded the region. There are as many adventures to be discovered as there are directions of million-dollar views through the layers of the Western Mountains. You say all the amazing places to go camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, water sliding, laser tagging, picnicking, swimming, boating, walking, jogging, biking or mineral collecting just aren’t your thing? Sticking closer to the historic village more your style? Well, that is where you will find more than your share of hidden surprises. It looks like the perfect destination for a night of rest: The Rostay, a lovely New England Inn. But where is the predictable formal parlor with the period wallpaper and wainscoting? Surprise! Not only is there an exhibit of locally-made quilts in that parlor, there is also
a tiny-but-sophisticated quilt shop tucked in the back of the house -- full of every notion and fabric. Our hills and valleys are full of artists who show their work at more galleries than you might believe could exist here. Those quilters are joined by painters, glass blowers, fiber artists, metal sculptors, wood carvers, mosaics experts, and more whose work can be found in surprising places all over the area. Bethel area folks are multi-taskers - running businesses, doing lots of volunteering and seizing new opportunities. That is why when you go into a frame shop on Main Street, you also walk into an elegant gallery opening featuring fine artists and photographers. Or when you stop in the jewelry shop up the street to see local gems, you learn that the shop is also the bustling operations center for the construction of the first and only Maine Mineral and Gem Museum. Perhaps you thought you were going to have a bite of dinner at a local watering hole, never thinking you’d have a chance to pound out some R&B on a drum
kit while on vacation. But wait - What’s “Hoot Night?” It is a weekly open-mic extravaganza in the basement of an historic inn that draws fine talent from near and far. That peaceful village Common at the top of Main Street seems like the perfect place to start the day with a cup of coffee, but wait - there are 70 fine artists exhibiting, a line-up of live performers and delicious local fare. It is the annual Bethel Art Fair (July 7). That quiet common comes alive regularly with events like MollyOckett Days (July 20 and 21) the Mahoosuc Arts Bandstand Concerts every Sunday in August, the Bethel Harvest Fest & “Chowdah” cook-off Sept. 21, and more. Think you’d like to find some entertainment? Hoping for something live, and will settle for just one decent singer? There
is a six-night lineup of International Celtic stars performing in the Mahoosuc Skye Celtic Series at Bingham Hall at Gould Academy June 18, July 2, 16, 23, Aug. 13 and 27, a free bandstand concert series at the Bethel Common every Sunday and much, much more. Along with all the visual artists here there are also superb musicians, dancers, poets, actors and performers of all kinds. One last surprise. There is something you can get only here that that affords amazing discounts, two-for-one deals and freebies at 12 Bethel Area businesses, galleries and performing centers with another 23 located throughout the Western Mountains. For only $20, you can save hundreds on one weekend of fun, shopping, dining and adventure with the Western Maine Passport to the

Whether you choose to ride it during summer, or take in the brilliant colors of fall from one of its gondola cabins, Sunday River’s Chondola is a must-do experience for all guests to Sunday River. Beginners will find the Easy Tiger trail absolutely “purrfect,” while those more daring souls will feel just like this after tackling the resort’s more technical trail, Rockstar. Deep within one of Sunday River’s forests is a Sunday River Zipline Tour unlike any other. Six lines, ranging from 100 feet to 300 feet in length, take zippers up and over a ravine and through a wooded wonderland. All thrills, no skills, Sunday River’s Zipline Tour is perfect for the beginner or intermediate adventurist. Guides set the pace and scene by helping you into your harness and assist you when loading and unloading at each line. The Tour’s grand finale is a zip down one of the resort’s two parallel Twin Zips, which span 750 feet in length. Take your sense of adventure to a whole new
level with Sunday River’s newest activities—geocache adventures, its bungee trampoline, and 9-hole disc golf course. Whether you choose to look for hidden treasure chests, reach new heights on work on your Frisbee handicap, these family-friendly activities will keep all members well entertained throughout the day. Tickets and rentals for discs and GPS devices are available out of Sunday River Sports in the South Ridge Lodge. For the competitionminded (and those who like to watch them), Sunday River hosts the Tough Mountain Challenge (July 20) obstacle race and the annual Wife Carrying Championship (October 12), a spectator favorite. Peddle
Your way through the western mountains of Maine
Western Maine’s unique blend of varied topography and low traffic levels makes for great road biking. Our wide river valleys offer seemingly endless miles of straight and level spinning, much of it through quiet woods and beautiful farmland. And if you’re up for a more physical challenge, head for the surrounding foothills, with great climbs and descents with lengths varying from a the three and a half mile climb up the Monkey Brook Road to the base of Jordan Bowl at Sunday River, to shorter routes right in Bethel village. Here are just a few examples:
In Bethel
A short ride starts in Davis Park, right at the foot of Main Street. The park is easily reachable by bike from most Bethel
area lodgings. The route follows the recreational pathway that starts here and winds for half a mile along the bank of the Androscoggin River. At the far end of the pathway is a multi-use recreational bridge that spans the river. You can then loop around back down to the riverbank before returning toward the village. Longer rides starting in the village, include Route 35 toward Stoneham and Lovell, the Intervale Road, or Route 2 east toward Newry or Andover. All these rides offer several possible variations.
Sunday River Road
A ride from the outskirts of Bethel out Route 2 and down the Sunday River Road will take you past Sunday River Ski Resort, the Artists Covered Bridge and out to the Letter S, a local

swimming hole on the Sunday River. You can return by the same route with possible detours up to the Jordan Bowl Hotel, a challenging three and a half mile climb.
North Road
Another option from Route 2 just outside Bethel Village is the North Road, which offers long, mostly flat stretches through land devoted to agriculture and forestry, with occasional views over the nearby Androscoggin River.
North/South Ponds Loop
A 21-mile jaunt through nearby Greenwood and Woodstock, just south of Bethel, will take you through some lovely farmland and along the shores of South and North ponds. You can find information about other road rides and local
mountain bike routes at Bethel Bicycle on Route 2 in Bethel or from the Chamber of Commerce in Bethel. Bethel Bicycle is a full service shop with expertise in all bicycle repairs, and most repair parts in stock. Be Adventurous
take a hike on one of the Bethel area’s many trails
Whether you’re looking for riverside trails right in the village or challenging mountain hikes, the Bethel area has it all.
Here are some examples of easier walks/hikes:
Bethel Pathway. This gravel/paved trail runs alongside the Androscoggin River and is within easy walking distance of Bethel Village. It crosses the river over a recreational bridge. Along the trail are a skatepark, playground and picnic area. Mount Will, 3.3 miles total: This loop hike in Bethel and Newry is one of the recreational gems of the Western Mountains. Two outlooks beckon. The northern viewpoint is reached via a self-guided nature trail. Continue along the circuit to the south-facing cliff, which overlooks Bethel’s broad river valley and its fertile farmlands.
Tables Hutches Bureaus
With a binocular, hikers can identify many buildings in Bethel Village. The Roost, 1.0 miles total: This prominent ledge south of Gilead, in the White Mountain National Forest, boasts an elevation of less than 1,400 feet -- small by Western Maine standards -- but the vistas are more extensive than many that require far more exertion. The view to the southwest takes in much of the newly designated Wild River Wilderness area, with New Hampshire’s Carter Range forming the backdrop. Step Falls Trail, off Route 26 in Newry, about 8 miles north of the Route 2/26 intersection, runs along Wight Brook, with swimming holes and water cascades. Maggie’s Nature Trail in Greenwood is a network of woods trails with views from ledges.

Examples of longer hikes:
Bald Mountain, 3.2 miles total: This spectacular cliff overlooks several remote ponds. Located in the town of Woodstock, it shouldn’t be confused with several other mountains in Maine with “bald” in their names. The footpath passes near scenic Little Concord Pond before briskly climbing an attractive wooded ridge to the handsome open

climbs to the summit of Puzzle Mountain in Newry after crossing a series of open ledges. The best views are to the west, with the Mahoosuc Range and the two peaks of Baldpate dominating the horizon. Although fairly short, some of these trips involve rugged footing and walking atop dramatic cliffs and drop-offs. Hik-
ers should be prepared with sturdy footwear and waterproof clothing. They should carry lunch and water as well as detailed maps and hiking guides. A great reference tool for hikes in the Bethel region can be found at www.mahoosucpathways.org. Photo: D. MacKnight

Hitting the Links Bethel Inn Resort
Located right in Bethel Village, just a chip shot from the Bethel common, The Bethel Inn Resort has one of the most interesting and fun courses in Maine. Seven holes remain from the Bethel Inn’s historic 1915 layout, and are blended with 11 newer holes by architect Geoffrey Cornish. When Cornish designed the additional holes in 1989, he completed what many now describe as one of the finest courses in New England. Over the years, the golf course and resort have received many accolades. “quintessential mountain golf at its best” by Northeast Golf Magazine and “Among the 25 best places in the U.S. to host an unforgettable family gathering” by Travel & Leisure Magazine. Cornish took advantage of the natural hazards and land flow on the site to create a championship course that now measures 6,663 yards from the back tees. He also oversaw the installation of a modern irrigation system to nourish the new bent grass greens, tees and fairways. The resulting 18 are replete with challenging, scenic golf. The par-3s at The Bethel Inn are particularly strong. Sixteen plays over a picturesque valley to an elevated green flanked by dozens of mature trees. The stunning third hole plays 160 yards over the abandoned granite stone walls of Mill Brook Dam. Appropriately called “the best dam hole in Maine” number three shares an enormous double green with the eighth, a demanding par-5 that measures 574 yards from the tips. All of the holes at Bethel, old and new, serve up stunning views of the surrounding mountains and offers five tee positions to accommodate a variety of players. The par-four 15th is especially panoramic, as it tumbles some 410 yards downhill to an old-fashioned punchbowl green. The short approach shot to the 13th green — played over scenic wetlands with the White Mountains as backdrop — is a jaw-dropper, not to mention a convincing testimonial for fall golf in New England. The course is home to several prestigious events, including the Fall Festival ProAm, September 10– 12, 2013 and the New England Couples Golf Championship, July 26 - 28, 2013 and is a favorite stop for New England Pros, attracting over 30 pros for our annual Fall Festival Pro-am in September. If you’re looking to get your game in shape this summer, the Inn offers the Guaranteed Performance™ School of Golf. The guarantee states that each player will improve, “or your next instruction is on us.” The golf school is one of the best and most affordable in New England, with over 6,000 graduates, emphasizing very small class size (3:1 student to teacher ratio), personalized on-course PGA instruction, video analysis, unlimited golf with carts and all meals, and over 200 acres of resort activities — a true golf school vacation. Sunday River Golf Club
Ranked as the No. 1 public course in Maine by Golfweek Magazine, the Sunday River Golf Club has quickly become a mustplay course among New England’s finest. In addition to the Golfweek ranking, the Sunday River Golf Club was recently added to GOLF Magazines list of top 100 courses you can play in the country. One of the most scenic courses in New England, the Sunday River Golf Course is spread across a wide hillside on the edge of the Sunday River Valley and offers sweeping vistas across the valley floor toward the Mahoosuc Mountain Range. Those who visit the course are met first with a uniquely dramatic setting. Prior to its construction, world-renowned architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. said the course would strike “a balance between challenge and playability,” and has since called it “one of the most outstanding courses we have had the opportunity to develop.” The mountain course has 18 self-contained fairways that are among the widest in Maine. Sunday River plays to more than 7,100 yards from the championship tees and just over 5,000 yards from the forward tees with two additional sets of tees in between to suit golfers of all abilities. The facility includes a driving range with multiple target greens and an expansive practice green, all with spectacular mountain views. The 10,000 square-foot clubhouse is fashioned from log and stone and features a deck overlooking the course, a grill serving lunch and a complete pro shop stocked with equipment and apparel. Lodging packages including breakfast at the Jordan Grand and Grand Summit Resort Hotels are available to book and located just minutes away from the course. Celebrating 100 years at the Bethel Inn Resort By Aranka Matolcsy Over the 100 years of its elegant and eventful life, as much has stayed the same as has changed at the Bethel Inn resort. Genuine compassion for guests and their experience is still the most prominent effort carried out by each staff member. Whether they are coordinating, cooking, managing, marketing, booking or welcoming, their common goal is providing the kind of personal, authentic experience that brings guests back year after year. “The bottom line: I love to show this place off, I mean I really do.” said Mitzi Naples, whose
pretty reflection bounces, with fresh tulips, off the mirror-polished banquet servers gracefully lined up in the elegant main dining room of the century-old Inn. Soft linens mute the sparkle of crystal glasses and perfectly placed silver flatware, which reflects the deep royal blue stripes of the Victorian wall coverings. She is extremely proud of her work, managing staff and countless details for a variety of dining rooms and facilities. Over 30 years of her career from server to dining room manager, the inn has become a home away from home for Mitzi. Her colleagues also share

that passion for showing off pride in their beautiful inn, like Executive Chef Rob Bates, who has been creating culinary masterpieces there for 25 years. They also feel about their guests like family, and look forward to their return year after year, to host them in the same rooms and at the same dining tables, building tradition and making memories along with the staff. Aside from living within walking distance, staying with the inn for decades is a common bond among many of the staffers who have weathered the tides of economic plenty and famine, social and technological change, construction and development, new ownership, celebrity stays, conventions created, movies made and
much more. This longterm relationship sets the tone for the genuine care and authentic experience the inn’s staff strives to provide their guests. Owner Dick Rasor has made it a priority since 1979 when he bought the inn, to create a work culture that is based on a shared value of wanting to do everything possible to make every guest feel at home. “Our simple credo is, ‘The answer is yes…what’s the question?’” said General Manager and part owner Allen Connors. Allen’s first job was caring for golf greens in 1981. Since, the biggest change and toughest challenge he has seen is technology. Online reservations have taken away personal contact with guests. In 1992 when he became general manager,
Allen or another frontline staffer would make personal contact with each guest, taking note of personal details, helping ensure a perfect stay – an unpretentious, hand’s on approach to guest services. “Now we have a real concern to get to know

about exciting four-season events like the Maine Comedy Festival, Ghosts and Gravestone Weekend, Road Scholar Alpine and Nordic Ski Weeks, New England Couples Golf Championship, or the Fall Festival Pro-am Golf Tournament for Sales and Marketing Director Brad Jerome - who, you guessed it, started at the inn selling hotdogs in 1998. Brad has seen the development of recreational amenities as the biggest change. The Victorian-era shuffle-board and tennis courts harken back to its original days as a 100-acre health retreat founded by Dr. John George Gehring, only now, a modern Nordic trail system, state-ofthe-art health club and 18-hole world-class golf course crown the stately 200-acre grounds. The changed and the same merge almost seamlessly within the walls of the inn, where original hand-carved details and rich window coverings compliment the original
Steinway & Sons baby grand piano sitting where it always has, flanked by same, stunning 19th century oil paintings hung in 1913. Meanwhile, guests tap away on laptops in the cozy parlor, dart through the lobby on the way to the heated pool, or to catch some live music in the tavern. Until cable TV came to each room, guests would always fill the parlor to watch TV, listen to the piano, socialize or read a newspaper. Enjoying that family environment, Allen chuckles when he notes that guests still must gather in the parlor because, at least for now, it has the WiFi signal. While 10 decades have passed in the life of the inn, bringing wave upon wave of change in every way imaginable, the dedication and pride of its caretakers have preserved the original integrity, true elegance and authentic experience of the Bethel Inn Resort. Explore Bethel’s Rich History at the Bethel Historical Society
The Bethel Historical Society takes visitors through a doorway into the area’s past at its Museum of Regional History on Broad Street, in the heart of Bethel Hill village. The Museum’s two properties — the 1821 O’Neil Robinson House and the 1813 Dr. Moses Mason House — are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and contain more than a dozen period rooms and exhibit galleries. The Bethel Historical Society’s museum, library and archival collections include a wide range of materials documenting the rich heritage of western Maine and the White Mountain region of Maine and New Hampshire. Throughout the year, the Society provides a full calendar of lectures, exhibit openings, demonstrations, and educational activities for
people of all ages. (Visit www.bethelhistorical.org for a listing of events.) Overlooking the historic Bethel Hill common, the Robinson House is one of the town’s most visible landmarks. Regularly changing exhibits, a well-stocked Museum Shop and the society’s administrative offices are located here. The Dr. Moses Mason House, which celebrates its 200th anniversary in 2013, provides insight — through a series of fully-furnished period rooms and two floors of Rufus Porter School murals — into how a prominent Bethel couple lived during the first half of the 19th century. Also located in this building are the society’s research library and an exhibit hall, which also is used for lectures and other programs. During the 2013 season, visitors will be able to view a new exhibition, “In
the Field & On the Homefront: Bethel During the Civil War,” plus displays focusing on nineteenth century White Mountain art and the centenary of the Bethel Inn, which opened in 1913.
The museum is open year-round, Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. 4 p.m., and also Saturday, 1 - 4 p.m., during July and August. It is closed Sunday and Monday, and Nov. 1 through
Thanksgiving Day. During July and August (and by appointment at other times), the society’s nine-room period-house museum will be open for tours, and, as always, a wide variety of items

Maine Mineral & Gem Museum The Maine Mineral and Gem Museum, a worldclass organization to preserve and exhibit Maine gemstones, minerals and historical documents showcasing Maine’s mining history, will open late this year in Bethel. This history has never been told in one location and with such stellar collections. Oxford County was famous for the fine mineral specimens and exquisite gems mined here since the early 1800s. Mining for commercially useful minerals and the quest for gem materials produced amazing discoveries, besides the commonly found feld-
spar, quartz, black tourmaline, beryl and mica. The new Museum’s exhibits will show the complete story of mining, minerals, and gems from throughout Maine. Visitors will learn how minerals form, are located, and taken from the earth. The art of cutting gems and creating jewelry will be demonstrated on site. Exhibits will explore the historical and current industrial uses for minerals. The Bethel museum will show the world’s most extensive artifact collection, and have extensive exhibitions and archival documentation of Maine mining, minerals, and gems.
of years ago, like fossils, and some from outer space: out-of-this-world meteorites. The Museum will offer mine tours that provide a “start to finish,” real-life experience of this fascinating field. The Museum Store will encourage visitors to take a piece of Maine home: many types of Maine minerals and gems will be for sale, from simple gifts and inexpensive souvenirs to spectacular, custom-designed jewelry. The Museum will be located in two newly-restored buildings on Main Street in Bethel.

Some “stars” of the collection include many gems dug in mines near Bethel: a 158-carat morganite gem, the largest stone cut from “The Rose of Maine,” discovered in the Bennett Mine in Buckfield in 1989; a 106-carat tourmaline gem, one of the major stones cut from the Dunton Mine in nearby Newry; and a 6.4-pound tourmaline crystal formation from the Dunton Mine. Important collections from the pioneering Perham’s Store will be remounted and interpreted for the public. MMGM will feature exhibitions of minerals formed millions

Small Town Fairs and Festivals
Small town fairs and festivals are highlights of the summer season. Each local celebration has its own theme or flavor. Among them: Mollyockett Days in Bethel takes place this year on July 20 and 21. It is named in honor of a legendary Pequawket Indian who lived among the early settlers of the area and treated their illnesses. The festival features a parade, foot races, arts and crafts booths on the common, a frogjumping contest and, of course, lots of wonderful food. Andover’s Olde Home Days celebration is scheduled for Aug. 2-4, and includes a parade, antique car displays, exhibits, art and flower shows, crafts, firemen’s muster, horse show, and plenty of food and music. For more festivals and events, please see the events calendar beginning on page 17. Photo: Carol Savage
