This idea started with three young students from the British Council looking to help this academy that has helped us before, we saw that some students had problems with their studies and that their time in the classes wasn’t as enjoyable as ours. This gave us the idea to make our own community to support ourselves. We want students to see this space, not as an obligation, but as a safe place where they can have a great time while learning English. The Student Union it’s not only a committee to help your academic life, it’s a family that welcomes any student to become a better version of themselves by communicating, sharing and spending a good time with the rest of the members. Personally I’ve loved working with these beautiful people that W H A T ' S

have encouraged me to make a change. It's an amazing feeling knowing that my work is actually seen and that I’m part of something, every action counts in our committee, we assure you that you won’t forget this experience. We also know that some people are very busy or just want to make small changes, for us you don’t need to work directly with the committee, you can give us a follow on Instagram (students_union_bcb), send us a work or any comments that you’d like to share with the community on our email account studentsunion.bcb@gmail.com or you can keep reading our magazine. We’ll be delighted to work together as a team with you. Enjoy this present that was made from us to you, our wonderful community keep reading WHAT’S UP! W H A T ' S

The lonely whale by: Sahara Jimenez-u.s Advanced

This is one of the paintings that I have made during the entire lockdown, in the photo you can see a whale called Whalien 52, the inspiration for this drawing I got when I was listening to one of the songs of my favorite group, The song talks about the most lonely whale in the world (Whalien 52) that cannot be heard because sings at a higher frequency than the others, and this happen to sometimes to us, we feel in moments of the pandemic we feel alone and think that nobody understands or nobody listen to us but we really aren't alone, we will never walk alone and we won't' be because there will always be someone that this to listen and understand us.

The shiny forest by: Juliana Salazar Mesa-u.s Advanced

This is a painting made with the diamond painting technique, where to complete the image you must glue stone by stone, which are called diamonds because they are so bright with the effect of light. The effect looks much better if you see the work from far away. This is why I like this technique, because despite needing a lot of patience and precision, the result is better appreciated from a greater distance, seeing it in a global way.

How books helped me survive through the lockdown. BY:SOFIA SANCHEZ BEJARANO UPPER SECONDARY ADVANCED

In March 2020, here in Colombia, the lockdown begins, and everyone's life changes. No one expected the situation to be critical for so long, including me. In the beginning, I was trying to enjoy my time at home. I was happy to spend time with my mom for the first time in years, even though she was still working, just having her here the whole day was amazing. But then one month became three, and we ended up trapped in our houses for more than 9 months When the pandemic situation started getting out of control, people were dying, losing their jobs, and the economy was in an emergency state. I started getting really worried. First, I just spent all my time on social media and wandering on the internet, so I could stop thinking about all the things that were worrying me. But this distraction was only useful for a couple of weeks. I started to get bored all the time, every day was the same routine, I couldn't go out and try to change the routine. But then I decided to read. And it changed my life...

W H A T ' S

U P ?

S T U D E N T

U N I O N

I had, of course, read books before. But I didn't really enjoy it as much as I do now. I had read books because of school, and some random titles that caught my attention during the years. Then, the day I decided to reread the Percy Jackson books that had been sitting in my room for years, I realized the magic behind the books. I started devouring books and reading everything that was accessible. I went from fantasy books to suspense books, to classics to Latin American literature. Of course, I still need to read a lot more, but with the few books that I have read, I have developed a very close relationship. Every day I was able to live an adventure, to save the world, to travel in time. Days became enjoyable again, I felt so immersed in the story I started to think of the different characters as my friends, I felt as if I knew them.

These new friends I made helped me cope with the lockdown, I didn't feel so lonely, and I could easily distract myself. I travel all around the world. I went from different towns of Colombia to New York, then to France and Italy, then I went to Greece, Egypt, and Alaska. My family was also able to be a part of this. I got so excited with the stories I was reading, I ran downstairs to tell my parents what was happening in the book. My dad remembered his school days when he used to read a lot of poetry and books, and we discovered a new hobby that we have in common.

Thanks to the experience I had during this time of lockdown, I have decided I want to study literature. I want to read way more and different genres. I want to learn how to write properly. I want to make stories that will take the public to another reality and help them forget about whatever they are going through. I want to inspire people, especially teenagers like me, to read more. There are millions of books out there, you just have to find which genre fits you more. But I can assure you that when you find the right book, it will change your life. Reading is not boring at all, reading makes you dream and imagine so many amazing things. Everyone should make time to read and forget about everything else.

Dear Agony Aunt If I have a crush on one of my classmates, what should I do?

Dear anon, Crushes are normal. But having a crush can make you do crazy things. You think in a weird way and act weirder than usual.

Agony Aunt

Don’t let your feelings take over you and make you act strange around them. Control yourself, do not deliberately try to ignore them or act like you don’t have a crush on them. This works opposite. Understand what’s going on: You need to take a second and think about it. Know what is going on with you. How do you feel around them? Are you sure? Stay sane and find out if they are dating someone or seeing somebody else. If they are, you know what you should do. Kidnap them. At the end you both would know if you are for each other or not. If the answer is no, don’t force it and act cool. Be friends as they are a nice person. Stop the flirting.

Dear Agony Aunt I don't like some of my classmates. Anonymous

What shall I do?

Dear Anon, Agony Aunt keep Your Distance Avoid yourself from them, directly also in social media. but doesn’t mean literally avoid them. if they made a contact with you, make it simple, not personal, and dont use your emotion. being nice is important too! Don’t you ever have a negative thinking about them, or even any relation about them Based from what I’ve seen in highschool, started from that you’ll start a ‘little’ hatred without anything facts within.

Dear Agony Aunt I have a problem because I feel so confused about my life in only one year I`ll be graduating and also I have a like a difficult problem because I can’t decide on a university and that´s makes me stressing, I am trying to look universities in Spain, USA, or the last option in Colombia. Also I have the possibility to go and study with a friend in Spain but I don’t know if that is the correct decision so I think that I would evaluate the options and see what is the best one, and the one that would help me in my life because is so difficult that decision because is decide that makes your future. S T U D E N T

U N I O N

Dear Anon, It is very difficult to make a decision when you think that this one decision will affect your life forever so first of all, I want to reassure you that life presents many opportunities. If you make a mistake and you are not happy with your choice there will be a solution and you can change your plans. With that in mind I think you will be able to approach this decision with excitement instead of feeling afraid of what will happen if you make the ‘wrong’ decision. (remember you learn from everything in life, even the things you don’t enjoy.)

Agony Aunt

In terms of how to make the decision now, I recommend you think carefully about what you really want from a daily life perspective. Do some research into the places you are thinking of going and the courses you are thinking of studying. What do you need to be happy in your day-to-day life? Do you want to be near to nature, the sea, or a city and culture? Is hot/ cold weather important? Do you want to be immersed in a foreign language every day or to have the familiarity of your own language? In terms of your studies, look into the course you are thinking of studying in great detail. See how many hours you will be studying per week, try to get in touch with students who are studying now and find out how their experiences are. Get in touch with tutors and teachers and find out about the teaching methodology. Also investigate the kind of support the university will provide to help you adjust to your new life. It sounds wonderful to go somewhere where a friend/ family will be, but do not go somewhere only for that reason, the place and the course need to be right for you too. From all this research I think you will start to get a clearer idea of where you want to go. Good luck!

2020 Memories By: Manuela Alzate

I took this photo last year when for the first time in a long time I went out of my house. I had gone to visit my grandparents and with my cousin we went to my very favourite place in the whole world, a little waterfall not too far for my grandparents’ house. It was such an incredible afternoon, we had a lot of fun. It felt great by being in nature once again and being able to feel away from reality for a couple of hours .This is definitely one of my happiest 2020 memories.

JESSICA SO

I Questions written by Danna Valentina Fernandez and Ibsen Sanchez Interviewer: Ibsen Sanchez Ibsen: Hi everybody, today we have a special guest, It's Jessica. Can you introduce yourself, please?

Jessica: I’m Jessica So, I've worked at the British Council in Bogotá, at the moment I'm teaching Upper Secondary

intermediate, I also teach adults

and finally I help organize the YL department. With your help we are making the magazine and the student committee.

Ibsen: We have some questions to you. First question: If you could travel in time, would you travel to the past or to the future?

Jessica: I would probably travel to the past, because I'm really curious to see some other things that we would never see, for example, the dinosaurs, or old civilizations, things that

happened before our time.

Ibsen: Second question: If you were able to change something in the world, what would you change?

Jessica: I would definitely change

the problem of inequality because I think

inequality is the reason for all of the problems that have existed between people. If people really believed that we were equal then there would be a lot less problems than we have today.

JESSICA SO Third

question:

If

you

could

dine

with

any

historical

figure,

who

would you choose?

Jessica: Well that is a difficult question, I mean I think that someone who comes to mind would be somebody who really changed the course of history, so maybe someone like Gandhi or Martin Luther King, you know people who really that have actually made a massive difference to our current situation today. Yes, it would be really interesting to know people like that.

Ibsen: Fourth question: If you had 10 seconds for a wish, what would you ask for?

Jessica: I would like to have a wishing box and then you could ask for unlimited wishes, so it’s like a box that would grant wishes so then I can think about my wishes, and ask for many.

Ibsen: If people told you that you are immortal and not one of your actions will be punished, what would be the first thing you would do?

Jessica: I would definitely dedicate my life to try to change the world for the better, I mean obviously I would work on myself first but yes definitely trying to include people to help to change the world.

Ibsen: Wow teacher, thank you for your participation. Jessica: Thank you Ibsen.

A Challenge that I Overcame During Lockdown Natalia Moreno Moscoso - Lower Secondary Upper Intermediate

My biggest challenges during lockdown were learning how to entertain myself and coping with the feeling of loneliness. I felt shocked and scared about the pandemic, I didn´t know what was happening. When the lockdown started, I felt upset and miserable. I missed my friends and hanging out with them. Also, I had much free time and didn´t know what to do, I got bored a lot. I was not in my country when the

lockdown started, my parents and friends weren´t with me. I felt annoyed, outraged and anxious. I overcame these challenges with the help of my cousins and aunts, we used to see films in the evening before going to bed.

A Challenge that I Overcame During Lockdown Natalia Moreno Moscoso - Lower Secondary Upper Intermediate

I started exercising and reading more often. I used to cook a special dinner or a new dessert for my family every Thursday. I found out ways to talk with my friends and family, we used to speak on the phone every afternoon. They have helped me to overcome these difficult situations. My friends have been very thoughtful with me, they sent me presents and have written to me every day. I feel grateful to have them in my life. After the lockdown I felt proud. I was creative and found ways to entertain myself and feel better. I feel brave and optimistic too, I understand now that the situation has changed. We need to take care of each other and get used to the new forms of communication.
