The UK is one of the first-choice destinations for students from all over the world. Every year, thousands of students choose to study in the friendly, safe, community environment of South Wales. Recently, more than 6,620 UK and international students at ten universities across Wales took part in the Wales Student Barometer survey. It found that for nearly all 38 aspects of their learning and living experience, students in Wales were more satisfied than those in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland (i-graduate, 2008). There are many travel opportunities open to Glamorgan students. London is only 2.5 hours away, and our railway station at Treforest provides a link to Cardiff International Airport and easy, cheap exploration of mainland Europe.
Pontypridd We have two campuses in the town of Pontypridd. Our Treforest campus is a self-contained village. All learning, living and leisure facilities are within easy reach, with lots of shops, bars and restaurants nearby. Less than a 15 minute walk from the main campus is our Glyntaff campus, where health, sport and science students have lectures and tutorials in brand-new, purpose-built facilities. Pontypridd is only 20 minutes from Cardiff, Wales' vibrant capital city. If you study at the University of Glamorgan’s Treforest or Glyntaff campuses, you can benefit from being part of this friendly community on a well-established campus, but you can also travel easily to Cardiff city centre.

Students’ Union Opened in September 2010, this brand-new iconic building offers modern, glass-fronted facilities that provide magnificent panoramic views across the valley. Areas include a social study lounge with internet access, a computer suite, wi-fi, soft-furnished lounge area, coffee shop, bar with sun terrace and an 800-capacity nightclub area that hosts a range of events and live music performances.

An exciting new training facility opened in September 2010 for students on our aerospace courses. The Centre has an aircraft hangar and additional laboratory space. The hangar houses a commercial aircraft so students can have workshop training on campus. It also provides direct access to the University’s existing aerospace facilities, including a Merlin engineering flight simulator.
To ensure our students get the best inside and outside the classroom, we’re building five new, four-storey accommodation blocks due to open in summer 2011. This £20m development includes 120 premium rooms and 20 ‘micro-flats’, and is in addition to the recent, high-spec refurbishment of 300 existing rooms. But it’s not just about where you sleep and eat – plans include a communal block and an external ‘amphitheatre’ area, which will give you even more opportunities for socialising and making new friends.
Glamorgan Sport Park To support the large growth in interest for our sport courses, we’ve constructed a purpose-built training facility alongside our existing playing fields. Facilities include a national-standard, six badminton court sports hall with a sprung floor, strength and conditioning room, laboratory testing facilities, IT rooms, teaching and training rooms, and viewing galleries. The Sport Park places Glamorgan’s facilities for sport and coaching among the best in Wales, allowing national-level sports events to be held at our sport park. Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama Science and Sport Development, Glyntaff Campus The University has completed a major refurbishment of a former grammar school and constructed a brand-new science block with state-of-the-art laboratories. These buildings deliver an enhanced teaching experience to students of sport coaching and sport science, chemistry and forensic science, medical sciences and biology, geography and other environment-related courses.

Concept Classroom This is a unique classroom in Glamorgan Business School. Developed to enhance business students’ learning experience, it has an open-plan learning space with interactive whiteboards and the latest technology, ‘white-walls’ that you can write on with marker pens and flexible furniture, so you can redesign the room to suit your needs.
The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama is part of the Glamorgan Group, offering specialist courses in music and drama: www.rwcmd.ac.uk Work is underway on a major redevelopment at the College, which will be ready in spring 2011. This will feature a new concert hall, theatre, drama and rehearsal spaces, and an exhibition gallery, all to complement and enhance the College’s existing high-quality performance facilities. The College is the National Conservatoire of Wales and this redevelopment will help raise the quality and profile of its provision for students. 8

Monitoring course quality is an ongoing exercise
Teaching and Learning All universities are subject to a regular institutional review that audits teaching quality and academic standards. This is carried out by the UK’s Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) – an independent body financed by the Higher Education Funding Councils and UK universities themselves, which ensures that students get the best possible teaching and support during their study. In its report, the QAA commended the University for demonstrating a strong commitment to supporting and enhancing the student experience. The inspectors highlighted the opportunities our students have to get involved in all aspects of their life at the University, in particular via the student representative schemes. They also praised the way Glamorgan develops its staff and ensures that academic standards are maintained by its partners. Monitoring course quality is an ongoing exercise and we continually examine our courses to make sure academic standards are met and improved. As a result, students can be sure that a University of Glamorgan degree is not only quality approved and internationally recognised, but will also prepare them for a career in even the most demanding environment.

Research Glamorgan has a lively culture of research and innovation, with particular emphasis on interdisciplinary and collaborative research with a wide range of public and private partners. In keeping with our role as an institution that is firmly embedded in our local, regional and national communities, we also have great strengths in problem-driven research, conducted in partnership with external stakeholders. The University of Glamorgan achieved excellent results in the most recent UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2008). More than 70% of Glamorgan’s research activity was assessed as being of a quality recognised internationally for its originality, significance and rigour, with around 10% of this research recognised as world-leading. The number of submissions to RAE subject areas almost doubled since RAE2001, from 9 to 17, with a 50% increase in the submission of staff. This exercise has clearly demonstrated the significance of our contribution to the international research agenda across a wide range of disciplines, which has provided a very strong platform from which to both expand and enhance our research activities. We recognise that many issues require a multidisciplinary approach and are setting up crossUniversity Research and Development Centres to bring together relevant expertise from across all our faculties. These will address particular themes such as Enterprise, Regeneration and Sustainable Communities, Disaster Resilience and Digital Economy. We also recognise that collaboration between universities will become increasingly important in the future. Therefore, we are very pleased to be part of the St David’s Day Partnership of the large, researchactive universities in Wales. We work closely with our

colleagues in the Universities of Cardiff, Swansea, Aberystwyth and Bangor to focus our combined resources on the key issues facing Wales and the wider world. At Glamorgan, the Research Office plays a major role in enabling and supporting the University in achieving its aims and objectives. It is committed to providing support for the research community at the University by supplying specialist, tailored advice and guidance to staff and students on research-related matters. Our aim is to provide a one-stop shop for those requiring advice or assistance for their research, at whatever stage they may be in their career. The Research Office organises many events, including the Research Student Support Seminar and the Doctoral and Masters Presentation Seminar. In addition to these events, research students are able to attend staff development events if they wish. Research students can also undertake a postgraduate certificate while studying for their research degree. Research students are able to attend the Effective Researcher course, which gives an opportunity to network with staff and students from different disciplines and institutions. International Foundation Programme (IFP)
Pre-sessional English Language Programme (including access to Masters degrees)
This one-year programme has been designed for students who want to study at undergraduate level in the UK. You will be taught in small groups to develop your subject specific knowledge and academic English language skills to the standard needed for undergraduate study.
The pre-sessional programme is an intensive English language course for students who hold offers for, or who are applying to, programmes at the University of Glamorgan (foundation, undergraduate or postgraduate level), but who do not have the language requirements. The pre-sessional programme improves your English and academic skills, and helps you communicate more effectively in an English-speaking environment. The pre-sessional programme lasts for 10 weeks and runs in both summer and autumn.
Entry requirements Applicants need a valid, national school leaving certificate at an appropriate level. In addition, you will need a level of English equivalent to IELTS 6.0. On successful completion of the IFP, you can progress to the first year of your University of Glamorgan undergraduate award.

Pre-University and English Study The International English Unit would like to offer a warm welcome to all prospective international students. The Unit offers academic and English language preparation programmes. These courses provide support and guidance to international students, so you can improve your English language ability, academically and socially, within a UK university environment. All courses are delivered by fully-qualified and professional teachers of the English language who have broad experience of working with international students. We are supportive of your academic needs and ambitions, and work closely with the University's academic faculties to make sure you get the best preparation and support for your studies. Student profile “The reason I chose Glamorgan was because of the top-up course which was available. I had just finished three years in China and chose to study my final year in the UK. Before studying the top-up, I attended the Pre-sessional Language Programme. The teachers were very nice and they gave us a lot of help with reading, writing, speaking and listening. 2011-12 fees for undergraduate awards are subject to confirmation. For 2010-11 these were £3,290.* Most full-time EU students are eligible to apply for a Tuition Fee Loan from the Student Loans Company to defer this cost. The money will be paid directly to the University and is not repayable by you until after you have left your course and are earning a certain amount of money each year. This loan is not means-tested.

How to Apply
Your Finances Living costs South Wales offers great value for money. Food, entertainment, accommodation and other day-to-day costs are likely to be lower than in many other parts of the UK. As a student, you will also get lots of other discounts, from cinema tickets to haircuts, so your money will go further at the University of Glamorgan. It is difficult to estimate how much it will cost you to live in the UK because so much depends on your own personal lifestyle. The UK Border Agency suggests that students should allow approximately £600 per month for their living costs. You will also need to consider any additional costs of travelling to and from your home country.
Your offer letter will clearly outline methods of payment. If you pay your deposit by bank transfer, you will need to send us evidence of the transfer by either fax or e-mail. Please ensure your full name, course and reference number is clearly stated in your correspondence. It would also be advisable to send an e-mail to international@glam.ac.uk to inform us that a payment has been made. This will help us to identify and track your payment. Visas and Immigration Procedures There have been major changes to UK immigration laws, including those that affect students who come to the UK to study. The information provided in this booklet about visas and immigration procedures is correct at the time of going to print, but may have subsequently changed. You are strongly advised to check the references under the ‘Useful resources’ section below, because this information may change.
Do I need a visa? European Economic Area (EEA) nationals You can enter the UK freely by showing your passport or National Identity Card, and do not need to gain Entry Clearance before travelling to the UK. Remember that dependants may need to obtain Entry Clearance if they are not EEA nationals. Nationals of countries outside the EEA To get permission to enter the UK as a student, you must have student Entry Clearance (otherwise known as a student visa). You will need to obtain this in your home country before travelling to the UK. All international students who are nationals of countries outside the EEA should contact the British Embassy, High Commission or Consulate in their own country to apply for a student visa.
Useful resources Before making your application for Entry Clearance as a student, there are various information resources available to help you. It is advised that you read the ‘Making a student immigration application in your home country’ guidance leaflet, which has been produced by UKCISA: the UK Council of International Student Affairs. Academic Technology Approval Scheme If your course leads to a Masters or doctorate postgraduate qualification, you may need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate, before you apply for your student visa (this requirement will be confirmed on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) statement). The ATAS certificate is issued by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. It gives security clearance to study certain subject areas where the knowledge gained may have application in the development of weapons of mass destruction (for example, certain subjects in fields of science, mathematics, engineering, technology or medicine). You can apply for an ATAS certificate as soon as you have a conditional offer of a place on a course. The system of applying for an ATAS certificate and which types of study and subject areas are affected, is explained on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website: www.fco.gov.uk/atas It can take several weeks to obtain an ATAS certificate, so it is strongly advised to start the process early. Tuberculosis screening Before getting a visa, nationals from Bangladesh, Ghana, Kenya, Pakistan, Sudan, Tanzania and Thailand need to be tested for tuberculosis (TB) and obtain a certificate that states they are free from infectious TB. The test includes having a chest X-ray at an accredited clinic or hospital run by the International Organisation for Migration. To check whether you need to obtain a TB certificate before you travel, visit www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/howtoapply/tbscreening.
A step-by-step guide to applying for Entry Clearance 1. Take time to read through the whole of the Policy Guidance and all the other documents you have printed off (listed under the ‘Useful resources’ section opposite). They contain lots of very detailed instructions about the documents you must provide. If your documents do not exactly match the requirements set out in the Policy Guidance, your application will be refused and you will have wasted your application fee and time. You will not be able to make your application more than three months before your course starts. 2. Find your country on the list at www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/howtoapply/wheretoapply. It tells you how to start the process of applying in your country. For example, whether you need to make an appointment or complete an online form, or have a tuberculosis test first. (Tuberculosis tests are only required in some countries. If you cannot see any information about how long it takes to process applications in your country, use the contact details to ask.)
3. Complete Application Form VAF9 − PBS Migrant and PBS Appendix 8 (General) Student. These can be downloaded from the following website: www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/howtoapply/infs/inf29pbs student. The application form asks how many ‘points’ you are claiming. As an adult student, you will need to have 40 points in total: • 30 points for a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), which confirms you are studying a course at an acceptable level with an approved education provider (also known as sponsorship) • 10 points for having enough money (also known as maintenance or funds) for your course fees and living costs 4. Make sure you enclose all the documents listed in the forms and guidance with your application. You should submit a photocopy of each document in addition to the original document itself. It is also advisable to keep a photocopy of your application form and all your supporting documents for your records.
You should also download the UK Border Agency leaflet ‘INF29’ for students, from www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/howtoapply/infs/inf29pbsstudent. Documentation Below is a list of the required documentation. Please note, however, that the University of Glamorgan accepts no legal responsibility for its accuracy. It is your responsibility to check the guidance to ensure that you have provided all the necessary documentation.
Important information about finances To qualify for Tier 4 of the Points-Based System, you must be able to demonstrate that you have sufficient money to support yourself. The amount required to study at the University of Glamorgan is listed below.
• Passport • A recent, passport-sized photograph. Please note that photographs should measure 45mm x 35mm and be: • in colour taken against a white background • clear and of good quality, and not framed or backed • printed on normal photographic paper • full face and without sunglasses, hat or head covering (unless it is worn for cultural or religious reasons, but the face must not be covered) • The visa fee of £199, which is non-refundable, and must normally be paid in the currency of the country from where you are applying • An original Confirmation of Acceptance for Study (CAS) from the University of Glamorgan. Your CAS must be issued no more than six months before you apply • All documents listed in the CAS statement – this will normally be the evidence of any qualifications that the University took account of when deciding to accept you for the course you plan to study: • Previous academic certificates • Proof of financial security to meet the full costs of your fees and maintenance. If your family is coming with you to the UK, you will need to show there will be adequate financial support for them also. See below for more information • You will have to provide your biometric details in person. This will involve scans of all 10 fingers and a full-face digital photograph. The whole procedure should take no more than five minutes to complete. Your visa application will not be processed until you have met this requirement. The end of that 28-day period must not be more than one month before the date of your application, for which you must show bank statements/other evidence. Your money must be held in cash. Shares, bonds, pension funds and similar savings accounts will not be accepted. You can prove you have the money if you have: • Cash in a bank account in your name (this includes joint accounts with your name) • A loan in your name • Official financial or government sponsorship (for example, your government, the British Council or any international organisation, company or university) If you are using overseas currency, the UK Border Agency will expect you to write on the document the closing balance in pounds sterling. They use the official exchange rate on the OANDA website, which can be found here: www.oanda.com/convert/classic When your Entry Clearance is issued/before travelling to the UK, check it carefully to make sure: • Your name and date of birth are correct • It says that you are a student • It starts on or before the date that you want to travel to the UK • It does not end sooner than you expect (see opposite)
If there is anything wrong with your Entry Clearance, ask to have it changed immediately, before you travel. It is very difficult to make changes after you travel. Under strict new regulations, institutions cannot enrol students unless they have the correct Tier 4 sponsor licence number on their visa. This means that you must have the correct visa for the correct course and university before you leave home. You should not expect to be able to switch institutions within the UK
and you could put future immigration applications at risk by doing so. How long your visa should be issued for When considering your application for Entry Clearance (visa), the British Embassy, High Commission or Consulate in your country should comply with the following guidance:

Please note that if you have financial sponsorship and your financial sponsor limits the time you may study in the UK, your visa will be issued for the same length of time. The University’s reporting duties International students are permitted entry to the UK under immigration laws for the purposes of study. The University is required to report to the UK Border Agency when international students holding a Tier 4 student visa: • Do not enrol within the enrolment period • Enrol but do not attend and miss 10 expected interactions • Discontinue their studies (including deferrals of study) • Make significant changes to their circumstances, for example, if the length of a course of study becomes shorter • Break the conditions of their permission to stay, eg, working illegally
If your application for Entry Clearance is refused There is no right of appeal for applications that are refused. If you think that a mistake has been made, it is possible to request an administrative review, which is free of charge. This process is explained in paragraphs 197-230 of the Tier 4 Policy Guidance (page 46-49), which can be accessed using the link given under the ‘Useful resources’ section on page 27 of this guide. Extending your student visa If you want to remain in the UK for longer than the period shown on your visa, you will need to apply to the UK Border Agency for an extension before your visa expires. At the time of print, the fee to extend your visa paid by post is £357, or £628 if paid in person. You should contact the International Student Support Service (ISSS) at least eight weeks before your visa expires. Advisers will usually be able to help you submit your application under a special scheme, making the procedure quicker than if you apply directly. Treforest The majority of private houses are a short 5-10 minute walk from the University and with rooms starting from around £45 per week, it’s a great option for the budget-conscious. However, you will have to factor in your utility bills which are usually not included – you will need to budget an extra £8-£10 per month for these.
Cardiff Private housing in Cardiff is also widely available and costs from approximately £55 per week (excluding bills). Cardiff is a student city with thousands of properties available to rent and has been voted the second most desirable city in the UK for students to live (www.accommodationforstudents.com). Once you have registered on Glamorgan Student Pad, you can request to receive regular updates on the latest properties and use the message board function to find housemates. Further information Contracts: Whatever type of accommodation you choose, you will be required to sign a legally binding contract that is often very difficult to get out of should you change your mind. For this reason, it is vital that you fully research all of your accommodation options before signing a contract or paying any money.

Glamorgan Sport covers all sports and recreation activities at the University, offering an impressive range of sports courses, facilities, clubs and qualifications. Our facilities are among the best in the UK and host a wide range of activities. The Centre for Health, Sport and Exercise on our Treforest campus is open throughout the year. We have over 40 classes each week during term-time, from canoeing to climbing and squash to salsa. If you fancy something a little less energetic, you can always take time to unwind in the sauna and steam room. The facilities are open throughout the term and holidays, with a sports injury clinic open twice-weekly during term-time. The Students' Union The Students' Union is run for students by students. As a Glamorgan student, you will automatically get membership of the Union and can benefit from all it has to offer − from welfare and education support, representation, Union council, fundraising and volunteering. You can join a sports team or a society such as the International Student Society. The Union also has day and night events you can attend, from meals, discos, cultural events, fun days, market days, fundraising and much more.
As part of our commitment to excellence, we have invested £3.7m in an additional purpose-built sport centre at Glamorgan Sport Park, three miles from the Treforest campus. There are 30 acres of playing fields with a pavilion, five floodlit pitches and two allweather pitches, one of which is a FIFA approved, fullsize ‘rubber crumb’ pitch. Our facilities are so good that many professional teams regularly use them for training and the University has also been included within London’s 2012 Pre-Games Training Camp Guide. In September 2010, the University opened a brand-new Student’s Union at Treforest. International students: Working part-time during your studies International students can work a set amount of hours per week. This is normally up to 20 hours per week during term-time for students studying at degree level or above, and up to 10 hours per week during termtime for students studying pre-sessional or foundation courses. All students can normally work any number of hours during vacations. The University’s Careers Service and the Students’ Union’s Employment Service may be able to help you get casual or part-time work while you are studying. EU students: Working part-time during your studies As a national of an EEA country, you do not have to get permission to work in the UK. Arrival Services To make your travel arrangements to the University as easy as possible, the International Student Support Service organises Arrival Services for when you first arrive in the UK. This service is available throughout the year from Cardiff International Airport (CIA) and Heathrow Airport. We recommend that you arrange your flight to land at CIA. On request, we can arrange a free taxi service from CIA to your accommodation at the University of Glamorgan (Treforest or ATRiuM campuses). If you arrive at Heathrow Airport, we can arrange for a University representative to meet you there and help you with the rest of your journey to Glamorgan. Please note, this is not a pick-up service and our representative will neither transport you nor travel with you to the University. It is important to remember that you must request the Arrival Services at least five working days before you intend to travel. Religion/Places of Worship The University welcomes students with different cultures and faiths from over 60 countries. The Chaplaincy is rooted in the Christian tradition, but is an inclusive service and gives support to people of all faiths and none. Islamic prayer facilities are located on the Treforest campus. The team of staff is made up of the Chaplain, part-time chaplains, volunteers and faith advisers. They can help you with any questions you have about practising your faith and have information about religious groups and activities on campus, as well as churches, temples, synagogues, gurdwaras or mosques in the local area. New Life in Glamorgan “I had been suffering from homesickness since I arrived in the UK and I missed my family. I saw the friendly smile of a Chinese girl when I opened the door on the morning of the second day. I felt warm and joyous because she kindly guided me around the whole campus and carefully introduced the functions of each building. In the afternoon, she introduced me to a large group of Chinese students, which made me feel at home. I also made lots of friends during International Welcome Week. We chatted with each other in our spare time and cooked together, so we had tasted all kinds of delicious food from different parts of China. Finally, we combated our homesickness.
University staff also helped, especially the staff from the International Student Support Service, who helped us to sort out many problems, big and small. They provided a fantastic International Welcome Week for overseas students. They provided a variety of opportunities to encourage us to get closer to each other in that first week. They held ‘Welsh Night’ at the end of the welcome week and I enjoyed it very much, because it was the first time I have been to a formal dinner. All of the staff who work at the University always carry a warm smile on their faces and they are all warm-hearted people. I received lots of help from the Drop-in Centre for overseas students like me. So far, it has been a splendid experience and I am sure that I will enjoy the rest of my university life at Glamorgan.”

Daily Life in the UK For the majority of international students, coming to study in the UK will mean a complete change of culture and surroundings. The following information should prepare you for some of the differences you will find and will hopefully make your day-to-day life easier.
Climate The climate in the UK is unpredictable. It can rain at any time of year and can get cold in the winter. You will need to make sure you have the right clothing: a warm coat or weatherproof jacket, T-shirts or shirts to be worn under warm jumpers, trousers or jeans, warm socks, strong shoes and an umbrella. The University Halls of Residence have central heating so you should not feel cold in your room, but if you do you can ask for extra blankets.
Eating It is very important that you have a balanced diet to keep fit and healthy. The University has many places on campus where you can eat and these are suitable for all kinds of diets and tastes. If you are cooking for yourself, there are shops and supermarkets where you can buy a wide range of foods suited to your individual preferences. You do not have to worry about transport, because there are two large supermarkets nearby that provide a weekly free bus service from the Treforest campus.
