YOUR NEW CITY

“Stirling lies in a very nice part of Scotland, right in the centre between the country’s two biggest cities and the quieter, more romantic Highlands. It is a small but lively place where you have no excuse to get bored.”
Marina Wimmer, Austria (PhD Psychology)
Stirling is a thrilling mix of the old and the new. Known as the ‘heart of Scotland’, it is a cosmopolitan, student-friendly and lively place to be. Here’s a quick introduction…
How big is Stirling? We think it is the perfect size. The population’s around 40,000 – 20 percent of whom are students. This makes Stirling big enough to offer a full ‘city experience’: shopping, café culture, performing arts and nightlife. Yet it’s still compact enough to retain a warm community feel – and make it easy for you to get around and settle in.
What is the city like? Stirling combines the charm of an historic destination with the buzz of a contemporary city. There’s truly something for everyone, much of it aimed directly at students.
Stirling’s history blends perfectly with a thriving modern soul. The city lights up at night, and many pubs, clubs and bars gear themselves towards students, with themed nights, DJs and special promotions. Traditional pubs provide quieter alternatives, with open fires, real ale and folk music. Closer to campus, Bridge of Allan is a vibrant mix of old and new, with beer gardens and bistros for summer evenings.
Culturally, Stirling Castle is an established concert and arts venue, hosting acts such as Travis, James Blunt and Lulu. The Tolbooth building is another busy focus for performing arts and other events. The city is a major tourist destination, served by numerous restaurants, bistros and cafés. There’s everything from pub grub to fine dining, with Italian, Indian, Chinese, Thai and Mexican all well represented. Nearby Bridge of Allan offers delis, bakeries and a classic fish ’n’ chip shop.
How far is the city from the campus? Stirling city centre is just 2.5km from the campus – less than 10 minutes by bus.
WhAt is the surrounding area like? Nestling where the Scottish highlands and lowlands meet, Stirling offers you the peace and tranquillity of unspoiled mountains, lochs and shores – perfect for outdoor activities such as walking, canoeing, mountain biking and sailing. Stirling also has superb links to the rest of Scotland and beyond. In particular, both Edinburgh and Glasgow are less than one hour away by road or rail.
Stirling is linked to two of Scotland’s historic heroes: William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Along with the dramatic castle, these give it a strong identity.

Undergraduate guide Thinking of coming to Stirling to study at undergraduate level? Over the next four pages is the basic information you need. When you’re ready for detailed advice, please contact us. WHAT CAN I study?
Scottish/EU domiciled students
Our main programmes are listed opposite. Choice and flexibility are key – we offer more ways of combining these subjects than most universities. For more about your particular area(s) of interest, visit:
You won’t have to pay tuition fees. The Scottish Government pays these on your behalf, through the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS). You must apply for this funding every year.
www.stir.ac.uk/undergrad/course_info
UK students (domiciled outside Scotland)
How are degrees structured? Undergraduate degrees in Scotland – including at Stirling – typically last four years (eight semesters). In your first year you have the opportunity to take up to three subjects. You maintain this breadth of study until the end of Semester 3, when you start to specialise in your chosen area. This gives you the chance to try new subjects, and even change the focus of your degree if you want to. You have maximum flexibility as there are no department or faculty restrictions. You can combine subjects from different areas, for example: Film & Media and Environmental Science; French and Psychology, Philosophy, Politics and Economics (BA).
are there other entry options? If you achieve particularly high grades, you may be able to go directly into the second year of your programme. The table shows which programmes offer this option. While some students choose this route, others prefer to still experience the breadth of study and flexibility the first year offers. There are also some programmes that you can start in either September or February – again, please see the table.
how much does it cost? Undergraduate tuition fee rates and payments differ, depending on where you live – here is a rough guide. For full information, please get in touch or visit: www.stir.ac.uk/undergrad/financial_info
You will be required to pay tuition fees at the ‘home’ rate for each year of your programme. Fees are set by the Scottish Government and are the same at all institutions. The fee level for new students entering in 2010 is £1,820 per year. You can take out an additional student loan to cover tuition fees, then repay this (along with any other student loans), once you have graduated and are earning over £15,000 a year. International students (domiciled outside the EU) You will be required to pay tuition fees at the ‘overseas’ rate for each year of your programme. For students who are not eligible for support from UK public funds, tuition fees vary according to the degree programme being taken. For 2010/2011, the annual tuition fee is £9,900 – £11,950.
What financial support is available? Financial support is available to some students in the form of student loans and additional maintenance grants. Please contact the relevant authority in your country for further information Undergraduate students from the USA are eligible to apply for Stafford Loans and other private loans. why Stirling? Ten great reasons 01 | QUALITY OF CHOICE
06 | CENTRAL LOCATION
Around 300 high quality degree combinations to create the programme that will suit your strengths and help you achieve your goals.
Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Highlands are all on your doorstep – Stirling really is Scotland’s heart.
02 | LEADING RESEARCH Three quarters of Stirling’s research was judged as ‘internationally excellent’ and ‘internationally recognised’ in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE, 2008), with 10 percent judged to be ‘world leading’. Many of our academic departments are rated top in Scotland for research so you’ll have access to cutting edge developments in your field.
03 | EXCELLENT PROSPECTS 94.6% of our graduates are in employment or further study six months after graduation (Higher Education Statistics Agency, 2009).
04 | LATEST TECHNOLOGY Most of the bedrooms in our halls are networked and there are wireless hubs throughout the campus – no excuse not to stay in touch!
05 | STUNNING ENVIRONMENT “Where else can you study on the shores of a loch, by an 18th-century castle, beneath rolling hills?” (The Guardian University Guide)
www.stir.ac.uk
07 | FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE We’re medium-sized, based on a campus, highly residential, with 80+ nationalities represented; there’s a great community feel.
08 | CRACKING NIGHTLIFE Stirling’s a friendly, buzzing and youthful city, with lots to do. One in every five residents is a student.
09 | SUPERB SPORT We have some of the finest facilities on a single site in the UK. No wonder we’ve been named Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence.
10 | YOU’RE GOING TO LOVE IT We know you will because a resounding 88% of students were satisfied with their programme (National Student Survey, 2009). We have also been voted The Sunday Times Scottish University of the Year 2009/2010.
