I’m hoping everyone had a safe and fun Halloween. Did I just write that? When I was single, October 31st was all about having drinks with friends—maybe fortuitously finding myself in some exciting new city like New York or Hong Kong (for some 5 years of my life, I was a flight attendant while working in publishing). As a parent, all I ask for during Halloween is asthma-free trick or treating in the shade, since the past 3 years have been spent in Manila where the weather is not exactly conducive to costumes with any sort of padding. This year was quite nice, weather-wise, although the asthma attack happened on my end; I like that better though, as I can control it. Lately the kids and I have been alternating with a cough and cold, so nights have been on the sleep-deprived side. Speaking of slumber issues, our Golden Retriever (Sera) didn’t exactly help in that department. Since she roams leashfree in our home, which I now regret, without our knowledge she has gotten her paws on two whole mango seeds left on our dining table that I was supposed to have for dessert. This happened about a month ago, when after dinner I gave my son a quick sponge bath upstairs and went back down right after. Behold, the mangoes were nowhere to be found. I asked our helpers if they kept it, and they said that it was right where I left it, so it was a mystery. Long story short, she had to undergo stomach surgery to get them out. I didn’t know that gastrointestinal blockage could lead to the decay of the part of the intestines where the obstruction is, so we got the mango seeds in the nick of time. As I write this she is still stitched up, but we have been storming heaven with prayers to spare our furry one’s life. Our 12-year old Lab passed away just this February, and cannot endure capping off 2013 with the loss of another. Ok, enough of the Debbie Downers…and our countdowns begin to the most exciting time of the year! We’ve put together quite an expansive array of unique choices for your gift buying pleasure. Christmas offering to you all. Can you say, “picture-perfect?” It’s as if God predetermined Amanda and David to be married so they can have their two adorable boys, Kieran and Kalon, roam the earth. Amanda is an in- (and thin-) spiration to many, including myself. Her ageless beauty, drive, passion, and hardworking ethics make for a true mom who’s gunning for it all, and succeeding at it. David is that dream dad type, rock of the fam: the roughhousing, doting, provider who is not only handsome and reliable, he is equally a loving and affectionate husband. By the way, you will learn in the story that our cover ‘glam-o-mama’ now adds “author” to her many career slashes. Another business-mom in this issue that I look up to is Maye Yao Co Say of Richwell—the lovely lady who, along with her family, brings Elle, Barbie, Safety 1st, Pigeon, and many other baby and children’s products to our country’s shores. She recently adds one of my favorite toy companies, Haba, to her long list of brands. We’ve featured Haba several times on BC’s pages, in case it rings a bell. We’ve also compiled some of the chic-est maternity wear on Hollywood celebrities, for those of you who are expecting and want to spruce up for the coming parties. Everytime I’m pregnant is when I feel the most confident—maybe because of the life growing inside of me, but I love dressing up my bump for the world to see. I am currently fixing my playlist of Holiday songs and movies, as I arm myself and get ready to brave the mad December rush deadlines and get-togethers. I am hoping for a quiet, peaceful holiday season regardless, but I am already missing our aforementioned Lab, Bruce, who won’t be joining us for Christmas for the first time. I will sincerely pine for our little white shedder (don’t miss the dog hair stuck to my clothes though) who always chews on every pair of soft slippers I try to get my husband for Christmas morning. His record time for complete annihilation of slippers is about 30 minutes—and those were $30 bumblebee bedroom slippers (yes, for grown men) that I painstakingly kept as a surprise, mind you. Sigh. Anyway, what’s on your gift list? Do tell. I’d love to organize some sort of giveaway for you guys…but just don’t ask me for a playdate with Brangelina—I’ve got dibs on that one.

“How you experience your money on a day-to-day basis is what matters,” Vermeeren says. “If the software running in your brain is constantly reinforcing the message, ‘it’s not enough,’ then that is likely how you will see yourself and experience your life – as ‘not enough.’ ”

In reality, we are not owed any amount of abundance and, in fact, should count ourselves lucky if we’re able to meet our basic needs; many in the world are not. More of us, however, would be happier simply appreciating what we have.

Money is a means to an end, not an end in itself. This can be a challenge to keep in mind since so much of our lives are spent in the pursuit of money. We work and go to school to support ourselves and our families. We see things we want, and we know we need more money for them. Study after study shows, however, that what really makes us happy is what we do and who we do it with, and not how much money we spend.

We are happiest when we are progressing toward a goal. When we lose sight of our goal, veer off the path toward our goal, and even achieve our goal, we’re less happy. When you digest food, your body absorbs the nutritious elements and expels the potentially toxic wastes. Emotions must be digested the same way. It’s important to express your feelings in responsible ways so that you don’t build up emotional toxins and pollutants in your body. This may be why anxiety, depression, and panic attacks have become so prevalent in our culture, Francis says. Some healthy, responsible ways to express emotion include creative endeavors, such as the visual arts—painting, drawing, sculpting; expressive arts such as singing and dancing; and healing arts such as massage. Don’t demand others witness your emotional expression; and don’t allow others to demand you witness theirs.

Using emotional expression to evoke responses from others is manipulative and does not allow you to experience the truth of your feelings. Crying, yelling, even pretending to be happy when you’re not in order to influence someone else’s behavior are abuses of emotional expression. Not only are we denied the benefits of expression, we have to live with our own lack of integrity for

using them irresponsibly. Parents and couples are also often pressured to keep their negative emotions at a minimum during quarrels, especially in front of children, as these have negative effects on them, but it is always better to be open to your kids as to why mommy and daddy are having a discussion (one tip is to be gentle as possible when it comes to speaking to your children about marital conflict), and never accuse or say bad things about your partner, no matter who is at fault. While it may be beneficial to tell your children the truth, it is best to do so when they are older and can understand the situation better. At the same time, as a parent, don’t let your child’s emotions get the best of you. Learn how to deal with tantrums the best way you can, in which both you and your child grow—and he doesn’t always get what he wants. Make the time to engage in intimate, authentic verbal sharing.

The honest, spoken expression of our true feelings allows us to tap the deep emotions that facilitate our tender connections to others. These connections trigger a physiological reaction that creates our own, natural brain elixir. When women engage in intimate con-

versation, it encourages the production of the hormone oxytocin, which creates feelings of euphoria. (It’s the same hormone secreted after childbirth to help our minds and bodies quickly recover from the pain of labor.) It also encourages production of the hormone serotonin, which gives us a feeling of well-being. Create a routine with your partner and take time (even for just 10 minutes) to talk about your day, cuddle, relax, and just enjoy each other’s company (without the kids). Keep your communication lines open and listen to each other—applaud each other’s small daily successes, and be compassionate when the situation calls for it. Don’t impose your emotional process on others.

We sometimes seek to avoid the discomfort of painful emotions by expressing them outwardly to others, for instance, angrily blaming someone else for our discomfort. Yelling at others because of the emotion we’re feeling only indicates that we have an inner turmoil, and an inner turmoil can only be resolved self to self. In addition, blaming someone else—or yourself!—for painful emotions causes us to become a victim, which creates suffering.

“These steps will help you begin to master your emotions, and once you do, you will find they will make you richer and more vibrant,” Francis says. “Our emotions don’t make us weak; they give us the empathy and love that make us care for and nurture our loved ones. That’s pretty powerful.” bc

Tell us about your childhood. What was it like growing up in an entrepreneurial environment?

I grew up at my grandparents’ house. They had a textile shop in Quiapo called Reliance Emporium. I would ride the jeep everyday with my grandfather to go there in the morning until we closed shop. I started as a saleslady at age 4, and was so happy to be a reliever cashier, maybe when I was 7. My parents were great examples of hard work as well. They always prioritized the business, but took time out to tell us stories of their daily struggles and triumphs. My aunts were there to train our resilience and discipline, whether we were doing our homework or performing household chores. I always remember them telling us that how we

What did you take up in college? Was it a natural progression for you to work in the family business?

I took up B.S. Management Engineering at the Ateneo de Manila University, then I finished my MBA at the Asian Institute of Management in 2006. My dad always gave us an option whether we wanted to work for the company or not. I did consider other dreams—being a human rights lawyer or working for foreign consultancy firms. In the end, it is my passion that brought me to work for our company. I love children, and seeing them reach their full potential. We are in the children’s business, so I can say that I am in my

dream job. How did Richwell start? What were the best lessons you learned from your parents in terms of the business?

My dad had very humble beginnings working as an employee. He was packing boxes in warehouses at age 17. He was a successful salesman until he decided to pursue his own business. The best lessons I have learned is to start young, and to never be afraid of hard work. When we were small, I would be staying in the warehouse sorting, packing, tagging, and later on, writing invoices. We were never paid nor promised gifts. For some reason, I saw how our parents worked, and felt it was our responsibility to help out in any way I can. With all these experiences, { november 2013 } b c PHILIPPINES

I brought home the perspective that there is no small job. I value each of our employees’ contribution, from our warehouse utility people to our supervisors and managers.

Our closest friends all know that I always call my husband, Vinson, as my rock. We are polar opposites, but I respect my husband’s firm support and unconditional love. He is the disciplinarian and my kids’ hero. He also takes charge of the kids’ sports activities. I am the more free-flowing mom who loves to hear my kids’ opinions. I am in-charge of their academic activities. Together, my husband and I re-align and discuss our kids’ various needs and change in personalities periodically. I love to read books on child development, and we discuss these new concepts and see how we can best apply these principles.

Working with your family needs clear rules and a common goal. If I weren’t working for the company, I would definitely pursue a career in managing and teaching in a school. I love holistic learning to lead kids into a path of self-actualization. My vision is to set up a center for entrepreneurship for kids to prepare them for their future. What’s a typical day like for the COO of Richwell?

I start my day at 5 AM. My husband and I have breakfast with the kids at

Favorite bonding activities with your kids?

My favorite bonding time with my kids is our weekly game night. Every Saturday, our kids and I play games, like car racing and puzzlemaking. I share my passion of Hot Wheels cars with my kids, so we take time choosing the fast-racing cars from my die-cast collection. Must-haves for your children?

Recently, I am excited to share with them my latest discovery— Haba preschool games. beauty and wellness CHOOSING FRAGRANCES Fragrances speak volumes about your personality, so choose one that represents you well. There are several types of fragrances in various degrees of concentration ('absolutes' are the more expensive of the lot because they are made of pure, natural extracts, while eau de colognes are usually just 3 to 5% oil in a mixture, and eau de toilette is 4 to 8%. Eau de parfum contains a stronger percentage, up to 15%). There are several types of scents, based on the materials from which a particular perfume is made of. Floral scents are made of extracts from flowers such as rose, lavender, or a combination of several floral plants. Spicy oriental scents are created from cinnamon, clove, and other such materials, making it smell muskier. If you're more for the mossy, earthy scents, try woody/chypre perfumes that make you think of wide open spaces of grass. These scents range from pine, cedar, sandalwood, oak, and other fresh herbs. Oceanic scents give a hint of fruits, water, and spice, and are commonly worn by men. There are three notes to consider when choosing perfumes—top notes are the first scents that you smell once applying perfume, while middle notes are the ones that emerge once the fragrance dissipates. Base notes are scents that can be detected after a few minutes of wearing the perfume. When selecting fragrances, think about what you like to smell on yourself—are you more for the citrus, fruity scents, or would you like to cast a romantic spell with floral scents? Make sure you select one that is meaningful to you. You can also invest in several scents for different occasions. If you're nursing, don't spray on too much perfume, as it may bother your baby's breathing. Make sure to keep perfumes and other cosmetics in a safe area where kids won't be able to reach, play with, or eat/drink them.

was a lot more fatigued because I was working full-time on my TV show, Amanda, Loving Life (which airs on the Lifestyle Network), and my site Glam-O-Mamas. I was also running around after my toddler. I just didn’t ever have time to rest. My pregnancies were so different. With my first, I was able to concentrate 100% on being pregnant and was fully able to enjoy the experience. The second pregnancy had its stressful moments because of work, and the terrible twos!

most 7 years now. My first experience with yoga was in the hot room, and it is what I fell in love with. It feels weird to practice in a room that isn’t heated. Bikram has helped whip me into shape every time I needed to—before my wedding and after the births of both my sons. Beyond that, Bikram yoga helps make me calmer, more zen. It cleanses me of my mental worries and the toxins physically present in my system from day-to-day pollutants from the air we breathe, and so on. When I’m unable to practice for long periods of time, I really feel the difference, both physically and mentally. What is it like now, raising two boys? Biggest challenges? A: I love being the mom of two boys.

Boys are so loving to their moms. My biggest challenge is that there is only one of me. The demands of two children versus one is quite different. You’re constantly trying to balance their individual needs and make sure you are devoting enough quality attention to both.

How did you deal with the “terrible twos?” A: The terrible twos were challenging

but they have nothing on the ‘terrorizing threes,’ as I like to call them. 3-year olds know what they want, but can’t understand why they can’t always get their way. They are ruled by their ids. ize is magic. Kieran makes us laugh every other minute—they are whip-smart at this age. How many kids are you going for? How far apart are your planning and why? A: I’ve always wanted a big family.

I come from a relatively small one, and so does David. I’ve always been slightly envious of my friends with their big, extended families. They have such an amazing rapport and friendship with one another, and have the best times together. It’s an inbuilt support network of fun and love. I do want four kids! My sister-in-law, Christine, has five, so I think my number is quite conservative (laughs).

We heard your family is being relocated to Singapore. Why is this so? A: David is being relocated for work. What are the benefits to moving there? A: I’m looking forward to moving there

because my parents and brother live there. It will be nice to live in the same country as them. This hasn’t been the case since I graduated from university in Australia.

Will you miss Hong Kong, and why? A: I will definitely miss Hong Kong.

I have grown to really love the country. Especially now, since we live 30 minutes outside of the city. We live right on the water, so we have a magnificent ocean view and beach access. We also have mountains and a reservoir that are 5 minutes away. We love to hike there, especially during the cooler months.

The city is an easy 30-minute taxi ride away. I also love that Hong Kong is a stone’s throw from Manila, so I am able to really split my time equally between both places. In Manila, you’ve mentioned building a new home farther south. Why is that? A: We love the South. When we even-

tually relocate back to the Philippines, we won’t be going back to Makati. The air is better down south, the pace more relaxed. David and I have talked about building our ‘dream home’ down there. We can’t wait to start on that! Tell us more about your new book

I had had when I was first pregnant with Kieran. This is why I thought to do it. New motherhood can be quite daunting. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always nice to have support and suggestions during that first year. I wanted to be a personal cheerleader for new moms, the way my friends were for me. It is a thoroughly researched, detailed guide for new moms, vetted by multiple medical authorities. It contains our experiences, and what worked for us and how these things could work for other moms too. We also included a local directory to really take the guesswork out of new motherhood. Bianca and I have the same sort of parenting ideas, styles and philosophies. We both lean towards a more organic, natural lifestyle, which we talk about a lot in the book. I think it is so exciting that todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s moms in the Philippines are discovering this sort of lifestyle. It really is better for everyone and our planet. Is it a challenge being vegan in Manila, or Asia, in general? How do you cope? Favorite recipes? A: I’m not strictly vegan anymore

because I was recently diagnosed as intolerant to gluten and dairy, as well as having sensitivities to other foods. As I am still breastfeeding, my milk was dwindling being a gluten-free vegan, so I had to add fish back to my diet when I am out of the house. Being gluten-free and a vegan is super tough—especially in Manila—while breastfeeding at the same time! If I’m out and the vegan, GF choices are not healthy or protein-providing, I may order a fish option instead. Kitchen Revolution is my go-to for healthy delicious recipes. I have taken cooking classes with Marie, the owner, and my yaya Cherie also attends her weekly classes. Cherie has also gone through raw classes at the Farm and Dahon Kusina, so she is an expert on my healthy food.

What do you like to shop for, for the boys? A: I love shopping for clothes—the

my goodness, I was a ball of nerves. Thankfully, the Singaporean process isn’t quite as tough as Hong Kong. All my HK friends are stressed to the nines. I often wonder why it is so stressful, considering our children are only 3 years old. At this stage, the admissions process is as much about the parents as it is about the child. Everyone has to go for rounds of interviews and assessment. I had to fly to Singapore to go and see all the schools. I am so happy that Kieran was accepted into an English school. Having been through both the British and American system, I feel that Kieran will thrive in the British system. Being English, it’s something that I have always wanted for my children’s education. How do you and David split parenting duties now that you have two boys? A: I usually tend to have to be

the disciplinarian since I am with them all the time. Now that Kieran is older, David takes on more of the outdoor activities, the rough and tumble stuff. Kiery is a ball of energy. He needs to expend all of it, or he bounces off the walls. He is in all sorts of activities—from soccer to rugby to swimming. He’s so advanced for his age with physical activity. Obviously Kalon is with me all the time, as I am still breastfeeding. Having boys is full of adventure and fun! David is frequently flying in and out of the country, and is coincidentally flying out right after this shoot. How do you manage your household on your own? A: I’m used to it. David and I both

travel extensively so we have a system that works. Sometimes, because I am managing two households, it can get difficult. But usually everything runs smoothly.

Besides it being indispensable for work and my overall function in all aspects of my life, it has apps on it for both my kids—which is a lifesaver when we are on the road. Healthy snacks—I need to bring things I can eat on the go since it is difficult for me to find gluten- and dairy-free snacks. I bring snacks that both my boys can eat too, so it’s a three-in-one. My breastfeeding cover: I nurse everywhere, so I can’t leave home without it!

DAVID JACOB You mentioned during our first interview that DJ-ing is a passion. How did you discover your love for music? D: I’ve always had a passion for mu-

sic and basically grew up with various genres—from jazz, rock, punk, disco, new wave—and love for house music. As far back as I can remember, the music bug was always with me.

Are you still able to DJ on the side? D: Yes, I still get to DJ once a month

in Hong Kong, and have a monthly residence at one of the clubs. The weekends are family time, so that’s the priority.

Can you tell us more about your day job? Why does it take you to different places all the time? D: I work for Marsh & McLennan

Companies, which is a U.S. multinational [that] focuses on financial services, with emphasis on Risk & Insurance. I’ve been with them for 23 years. I run the Business Development and Specialty Practices for the Asia Pacific region. I cover 15 countries in the region, so a lot of traveling is involved, not to mention travel to the U.S. and Europe.

What are you looking forward to as you are relocated to Singapore? D: I’ll probably jinx the relocation

by answering! It’s happened before. (Smiles) To be honest, I’m quite biased to living in Hong Kong, so Singapore will be an adjustment. Amanda’s parents live in Singapore, so that is a big positive. I also think the pace is bcmag.ph

slower compared to Hong Kong, but I’m always on the road, so I’m not sure it matters. I hear it’s great for the kids, so I’m really looking forward to what it has to offer.

New motherhood can be quite daunting...I wanted to be a personal cheerleader for new moms, the way my friends were for me.

What’s the best destination you’ve been to so far? D: That’s tough, as there are so many!

I love the Italian Riviera and Amalfi Coast. There’s also a breathtaking resort in Port de Sant Miguel Ibiza called Hacienda Na Xamena.

How do you stay connected to your family when you’re outside the country or just away from them for a few days? D: Thank God for Skype! Best way to

stay connected with the family. The little ones grow up so fast, so [they’re] always doing or saying something new when I speak to them. Amanda is also so busy that it’s nice to see her and hear about her day.

What major adjustments had you have to make since having a second child? D: Less sleep, for sure. (Smiles) I don’t

think there has been much adjustment from the first—I’m sure that will change once Kalon, our youngest, starts to run around. Prioritizing family and work is also tough, as demands from work increase with the added responsibility I now have. Family comes first!

Your story on finding out Amanda was pregnant for the first time was really touching. How did you find out she was pregnant with Kalon? D: Finding out about Kalon was just

as amazing, as we found out on Kieran’s birthday. (Smiles) We had been trying for quite some time, so every month was in anticipation of good news. Amanda woke me up early in the morning—at 4 A.M—to tell me she thought she was pregnant after taking the test. It’s always the greatest feeling when you hear the words,“I’m pregnant!” Did you know ahead of time that you were having another boy? What was your and Amanda’s reaction?

Yes, we did. We both wanted another boy! Having two boys grow up and become best of friends was something we both wanted. Me, especially, seeing how close my brother Mike and I are. I’m hoping for a girl next. (Smiles)

What’s it like now, having two boys? D: I love having two boys! The dynam-

ics are indescribable, and I know they will have the best of times together and of course be as naughty, fun, and everything that boys are. I can’t wait for them to start playing sports and interacting. Kieran is dying to have a playmate, and Kalon already wants to do everything his older brother does.

Funniest, most embarrassing moments with your children? D: Everything is funny with a 3 -ear

I love goofing around with them—my inner child takes over and we just have a lot of fun. I’m very athletic so any chance I get, especially with Kieran, we are either swimming, playing football, running by the beach, and anything outdoors.
