his July 7th marked my 12th wedding anniversary, and what have I learned so far? That your marriage is the toughest relationship you will ever have to fight for. It requires understanding, patience, and above all, love. Hardly newsbreaking there, but if I didn’t love my husband, I would’ve been out the door long ago (and so, him)— and as a result, my two other children would not have been born in the process (a ghastly thought). Being a spouse is a daily exercise in self-control, of trying not to hate the other person for not being more of what you want them to be. But as you get older, and you have children, all your selfish and juvenile wants get pushed back. I think of it as a filing cabinet where anything and everything filed under “Kids” are always in the first folders that are easy to pull out, as it should be. This is why choosing a life partner is important—someday, you will have an empty nest as your little ones move out of their rooms you so desperately ask them to keep clean—and into their own dwellings. That thought always brings tears to my eyes. On July 22nd, my kindhearted, intelligent, funny, beautiful younger daughter turns 9. When my Maxine was born in New Jersey, we didn’t have the familial support that all of us here in Manila take for granted. I had to ask my friend, Marc, from high school (who was fortunately also living in NJ at the time), to come and pick up my eldest, Sabina (at around 3 AM if I’m not mistaken), while I deliver Max as fast as I could. I was praying and silently urging Max to come out quickly because her sister needs us, and being the considerate child she always has been from birth, I had a fast, easy delivery. That night of her birth, we spent the whole night alone together because my husband and eldest were only allowed until 9 PM (hospital rule on kids visitation times). Since I was alone, the nurses asked if I wanted her to room-in or stay in the nursery, so I decided to do both (nursery was across from my room, thank God)—and so at around 2 AM, I woke up, walked out, and checked on Max and found her being fed by a nurse. I was crying while standing outside watching them. I was so exhausted since I was alone and had to do everything myself. I told Max that is the last time she will be without me. The next day, my mother-in-law arrived from Florida after her flight was delayed, which is why she couldn’t make it earlier. She saved the day and my sanity by doing the grocery, and installing the window blinds that my husband had been saying he would install for the longest time. Since Max’s birth, BC Magazine in the US climbed steadily—we would bring her to photo

shoots as a baby, even sitting on my lap quietly for hours as I interviewed celebrities like Martin Sheen (photo above). Apart from our anniversary, my husband, Tom, hits the big 4-0 mark this year. My darling, I wish you prime health, safety, good luck, a long, happy life, and that you do not undergo midlife crises and start a Harley club, or something. Anyway, just remember that your hair is only good under hats, not sticky helmets. I wish that asthma would leave you alone for good, so that your children can enjoy you at your best. May all your dreams come true because you are a good man, and your kind is hard to find. May your loyalty be a benchmark for our daughters when they find their future loves, so we won’t have to pull out your rusty shotgun. You have a special place in God’s heart because you are really one of the luckiest, simplest people I know, and you thank Him for it. On August 15, I turn 39 (ok, moving on), and my sweet Mathis will be 3 on August 16. Our little sparkplug of a boy brings so much joy in our home (along with the tiredness that comes from picking up after him and dealing with his mood swings). I cannot imagine my family without any of my kids. Mathis is a certified Mama’s boy—he knows it, and the entire family does, too. For the sake of my memories, this year he (meaning, all of us) got very much into The Backyardigans, Little Einsteins, Peppa and George. He is conversing sensibly, and wants to do everything on his own—which can sometimes result in little catastrophes. I don’t think my heart is ever gonna be ready for the adventurousness of boys. Mathis seems advanced for his age, so his temper is way up there as well, haha. For my favorite boy in the universe— nothing but the best, my love. Speaking of number 1, this issue is an exclusive on Andi Manzano Reyes and GP Reyes’ unica hija, Olivia. Already blessed with literally thousands of fans because of her addictive cuteness (follow her on IG and you’ll know what I mean) and respected, wonderful parents—we are thrilled to have been able to spend a day with the blessed trio. We also bring you a lookback on U.S. TV host, Samantha Harris’ BC cover. The “Dancing with the Stars” beauty was a fixture on U.S. television, and it was a pleasure collaborating with her and her family for this story. Computer gaming can have positive benefits with family relationships. It turns out that there has been plenty of research out there on the benefits of parents playing computer games with their kids – not by computer game makers, but by respected universities. Researchers from Arizona State University suggest that “Parents miss a huge opportunity when they walk away from playing video games with their kids.” From Brigham Young University, researchers studied 287 families and looked at how they play video games together. The BYU team found that girls from ages 11 to 16, who played video games with a parent, reported better behavior, more feelings of family closeness and less aggression than girls who played alone or with friends. In addition, there is a great TED talk that discusses game playing and the positive effectives – both for family closeness and health.

Games like Minecraft may offer an interest in engineering, city planning, etc. Many children who take to games that entail building cities may naturally take an interest later in life in the details of building things in the real world. Of course, children who love video games may want to know how the games themselves work or are of a high quality, which can lead to further interest in technology. Whether it’s a future career in video games, computer programming, engineering or a very long list of high-paying jobs, gaming can lead to good things. bc

ou may have seen Heather McDonald on Frasier, Malcolm in the Middle, Reno 911, and Drake and Josh, but this comedian is highly acclaimed for her work in E! Channel’s Chelsea Lately, where she is a full-time writer and story producer. She was previously a series regular and writer on MTV’s Lyricist Lounge, and has performed to sold-out venues like Carnegie Hall, The Borgota in Atlantic City, The Pearl in the Palms Casino, and The Fox Theatre in Atlanta. Nowadays, the You’ll Never Blue Ball in This Town Again author can be seen shuffling from Chelsea Lately to various locations in the country to perform stand-up. BC takes a closer look at this mom of three who discusses why poop will always be funny to kids, her upcoming plans, including another book in the works.

Life is short and marriage is long, so it is best not to make too big of a deal out of disagreement and try to make the fight end as soon as possible. How did you get into writing and into comedy, to be specific?

I was working as an assistant buyer at Robinson’s May, and a co-worker threw a Learning Annex magazine on my desk and convinced me to take a class on stand-up comedy. I did, and from there, started doing stand-up. I also enrolled in the Groundlings Theater, where I began to write comedic sketches and monologues. My first real writing job was writing for Keenen Ivory Wayan’s late night talk show. I got this job by submitting writing samples through my literary agent. My favorite celebrities to impersonate are Drew Barrymore, because she is always so positive and I like expounding on that when I do her, and Celine [Dion]. I’ve never met Celine or Drew, so I don’t know what they think, but the Kardashians (who I also do) and various Real Housewives love it and are flattered. Even Geri Jewell from

I love Juicy sweat suits, especially with the buttons on the butt because I have a flat butt, so it helps. I also like Hudson stretch boot leg jeans, Shape Ups, and James Perse button down shirts. I wore a uniform for 12 years in Catholic School, so once I find something I like, I get it in a few colors and stick to it. fter years of hard work, you’ve built the family business into a great success and you take pride in meeting the challenges that each day brings.

At some point, though, the day arrives when it’s time to turn the reins over to the next generation. That can be an exciting moment or an anxietyridden one, depending on what has gone on before to prepare for the momentous occasion. “Laying the path to a successful family-business transition requires a bit of threading the needle,” says Henry Hutcheson, author of the book “Dirty Little Secrets of Family Business” (dirtylittlesecretsoffamilybusiness.com). “On the one hand you don’t want to paint an overly rosy picture to the next generation. That could create a sense of entitlement and the false perception that running a business is easy and all you need to do is count the money and show up every now and then to check on things.” At the same time, he says, if you put too much emphasis on the difficulties of running a business and the stresses that come with it, your sons and daughters might not clamor to be first in line to take over. Ideally, it’s best to think ahead and start grooming the next generation long in advance, Hutcheson says. Give them summer jobs while they are in high school and college so they can start testing their abilities. When they join the family business full time, find initiatives for them to work on that involve group dynamics. But also hand them individual projects where they hold sole responsibility for the results. “It’s critical when you are selecting the next leader to realize that it’s not all about who will lead,” Hutcheson says. “It is also about ensuring that those who are not selected are in support of the decision

and can work as a team with the new leader.” Hutcheson says there are four key ingredients to developing the right person to take over the family business. Independence

Next generation leaders must have confidence in themselves, their thoughts and their beliefs. “Much of this can be developed while working in the family business by constructing and leading significant projects,” Hutcheson says. But one shortcut to accomplish this is to work for some other company early on. Many multi-generation family businesses like to make that a requirement for family members. Competence

This is more than just being able to do the work. It means developing bottom-up experience. Not just being the accountant, but being able to reconcile the accounts and perform the journal entries. Not just being sales and marketing manager, but having been on a quota and worked the trade shows. Experience doing some of the day-to-day grunt work can pay dividends down the line. People skills

“It’s not enough to just be smart and confident,” Hutcheson says. “You need to be able to work with people.” He notes that in the book “Emotional Intelligence,” Daniel Coleman outlines two studies that measured the success of a batch of high school valedictorians and Harvard graduates. Those who were able to perceive the emotional state of others and react to it appropriately proved to be the most successful. No special privileges

don’t think the esteemed American crooner would mind if we borrowed a few lines from one of his best songs of late. Albeit a different message entirely, I’m sure that GP Reyes, father to 4-month old angel, Pilar Olivia Reyes (whose Instagram handle @ oliviareyes already had 18k fans as of this shoot last June) is only too glad the above line from the song is on point—for the next few decades, at least. And oh, GP is ready for those years that come after, guns blazing. Because of the nature of our readership—and the fact that he’s a dad now and his wife suggests that he watch his tongue—it’s surprising that the sorta new GP censors his profanity, because that’s normally how he punctuates his sentences. Peppered with a few cuss words here and there, it used to add to our favorite creative director-slash-bartender’s charm, but I like this new side to him. It makes him more, should I say, credible? Being one of my longtime friends in the business—we go way back, as in during his days planning events for

clothing store, Sari-Sari, to him becoming one of Manila’s nightlife purveyors while being a creative director for Century Properties during the day—this boy works and plays hard. Is it just me, or GP recently has a different kind of…swagger. Brighter face, more at peace—it almost seems as if his partying days are behind him. Almost. He confesses, “Before my daughter was born, people always told me that fatherhood changes you. And I was like, ‘that’s full of crap.’ But really, it’s cliché to say it, but the moment you hold the baby in your arms, it really is life changing. I didn’t believe it at first, but with every minute that passes that you’re with her–everything really does change. Being a man, my wife still allows me to look at other women. Before, I would be like, “This chick is hot.” Now it’s like, “My daughter’s gonna be that chick eventually.” Maybe if I had a son, it would be different. But I’m very, very happy that my firstborn is a girl. It really changed my life in many ways, because whereas I would be out ‘til 5 AM, getting trashed—now my wife just has to send me a picture that Olivia is awake, and I’m rushing home. Or for example, you know I’m a big car guy and I really love the need for speed. We always have weekly

fun rides where we’re going 200 km/h or 270. We have this 300 club, which is you have to go up to 300 km/h. But then now I’m thinking, one mistake, it’s the end of you. When I hit a certain speed, I start thinking about it, and then I slow down. It puts everything in perspective when you’re doing something for someone else. Of course you have your wife, but when you have a daughter, it’s different because you’re responsible for a human being. I’ve lived my life in the fast lane for 40 years, and there’s really no shame in going at a slower pace. While going fast is fun, taking stock of everything–going slow is fun, too.” Now that his ‘Fast and The Furious’ days are steadily creeping away, I asked him why he likes Porsches so much, and what he chose as his daddy car. “Well, number one: German reliability. 70% of all Porsches made are still on the road since the 1950s. Goes to show these things don’t break. Number 2: You know the 9/11 hasn’t changed shape in 50 years. It’s still the same car, with little tweaks here and there. A work of art is something that lasts throughout time. Just like GP Reyes, you know what I mean? [Room bursts into laughter] It’s a car that never ages, same as me. So it’s the same as before, just chunkier down here [touches waist], you know, slightly cuter. But we had to buy a 7-seater for the yaya, the lolas, so we got a Land Rover. this joke was half meant, so boys take heed, you’ve been forewarned. Andi is only too pleased that their eldest shares her gender. The lovely, alabaster-skinned radio DJ says, “I was so happy, I really wanted a girl. Aside from us being four girls in the family—I took care of my three younger sisters, so I kinda know how it is to have a girl

already. I really wanted the eldest to be a girl because I turned out well. Compared to GP. (laughs) I’m kidding!” The petite beauty, former MTV VJ, and radio host for a decade hails from two entertainment families on both sides. She is cousins with Luis (Lucky) Manzano on her dad’s, and is related to Gary Valenciano on her mother’s. Since she has show business in her blood, would she want Olivia to take the same life route? She confesses, “Depends on her. As long as she studies, finishes school, she’s an honor student. As long as she knows her priorities…I talk like a mom! My God! I’m a mom! (Laughs)” I asked Andi about her career path. “When I was young, I used to do commercials. I started when I was 13. When I entered high school, I stopped that because I wanted to concentrate on school. Before entering college, I did radio. And then after radio came MTV, and then came hostings left and right. I was offered TV shows but I didn’t wanna give up on radio because it’s something that’s so dear to me. I’ve been there for 10 years. And you know what’s so funny, people go, “I used to listen to you before, but then I graduated na.” I was like “What?! When did you start listening?” “When I was in Grade 7.” So imagine, from high school to college I was with them on radio.” Andi’s fans now also ‘graduated’ to include more parents like myself, who are only too keen to follow her journey as she takes on motherhood alongside us ladies fighting the good fight. On the topic of Lucky Manzano earlier on, GP recounts how the actor had a direct hand in his future with Andi. “I had a long term [girlfriend]—a 4-year one. And then I had the girlfriend from hell, which was a little less than a year. I was dating a couple of girls, and I had a crush on Andi. I told Lucky, “Can you introduce me to Andi?” and he said, “Ok, bro. Done!” And he texted me and goes, “I told her that you have a crush on her, and if she sees you out to say ‘hi.’” I was like, “What?!? I don’t even know her.” So I added her on Facebook and said this whole spiel and I go, “Hi! Lucky said something stupid, blah blah blah,” and I introduced myself. I said, “I’m GP.” And then she goes, “Hi, I’m Andi.” It was like a month of joking around and using my charm, using the thesaurus for big words (Laughs), and everytime I would ask her out, she’d be like, “Oh, I can’t make it.” After a month, she said, “Ok, fine. with my cousin in Greenbelt.” And that was it.” How did GP know she was the one? “They always say this, and it’s definitely true. There’s this compelling feeling in your gut. I’ve been through shitty relationships. I’ve been through great relationships, but I had never felt the feeling that ‘I’m gonna marry this girl.’ The day I actually met her in person, I went to Barcino’s in Greenbelt. She was with her cousin, Leslie, and I came in a suit. I’m sweating and she’s like, “Why are you wearing a suit?” I go, “Oh, I came from a meeting,” and then I said, “Let’s go to Republiq or Opus.” We get there and towards the end of the night, I scored her number. This is the name that I put on my phone, and I’ve never changed it. [GP shows us his phone with, “Andi My Future Whatever” saved] The minute I met her, I knew that she would be in my future somehow. I knew that she’d be a part of my life. And then sure enough—that was Friday—that Sunday, I visited her at her family home and I told her mom, ‘Tita, come join us for a drink.’ And her mom said, ‘I’ll just have a glass,’ and then two bottles later, I’m bonding with her mom already. The mom said, ‘That guy is a scary one.’ (Laughs) After that, we were never apart. The longest we were apart was when Andi went to Barcelona for work. And you know, you have this criteria of the things you like in a woman—obviously, physically attractive, intellectual. But one of the things that attracted me so much to Andi was her love for family. We’re 5 boys and 1 girl, they’re 4 girls and 1 boy. One of the things that pissed me off before was that sometimes on social media people would say to her, “O, pinakasalan mo

So that itself, for me, working since she was 13, her being driven, these things are immensely attractive.” Almost as if they rehearsed it, Andi practically says the same thing about how she knew GP was ‘it.’ “I’ve been through a lot of crappy relationships before, but it’s how we got along. I knew family was very important to him. And you know, Mom knows best. It’s just the feeling also—how we spent everyday together ever since we met. We’ve traveled almost everywhere. How my family loves him, how his family loves me. So parang, it just all connected. It just all fell into place.” Fast forward to their sentimental wedding proposal in 2012, which you can still catch on youtube. In GP’s mind, their marriage was always imminent. “From the beginning, I knew. It was just a matter of time. We were blessed enough—in the 2 years that we were going out—to have been able to travel every month. We were in Paris, Japan, Singapore. I think traveling with woman really is a Litmus test, because you see the farts and all that, and you also see how they behave when they travel—how they are when they’re irritated or jetlagged, or when they can’t open their luggage. experience. I had known it already and spoke to my mom about it and she told me it was about time, so I was thinking how I was gonna do it. I did it in the worst possible way. We came from Boracay, and our flight got delayed. I had told no one except for Manny Angeles, my video director from Century Properties, and told him, “Keep the ring.” And when the song, “Marry Me,” came out...do you remember this video?” I answer in the affirmative, “Yeah. By Train?” GP nods, “Andi sent me the video and it was the message. I was with my creative team and said to them, “Guys, watch this.” All the girls were crying. I was like, “You know, this girl that I just met just sent this to me.” I took it as a sign. I told my mom on Facebook, “Mom, if ever I get married, this is gonna be my wedding song.” I talked to Manny and asked them to do a flash mob. Eric [Cua], my best friend, was there in the video but I never told anybody. Right before leaving Boracay, Eric and I were in bathroom, and I told him, “You know what, I’m proposing.” And Eric’s like, “What? No way!” I called my mom and said, “Mom, right after we land from the airport, I’m gonna go to your house” She asks, “Why?” “Because I’m gonna propose to Andi.” I never told anybody, but I told my Century team, like Jules. She organized the whole thing in the airport. Then when we land, I had this whole speech prepared and everything. If you look carefully in the video, I opened the box, and the ring was not there. So, I’m panicking and my speech completely disappeared. Yun pala it fell, so I got it and proposed to her. I think John Lloyd [Cruz] copied it in one of his movies. I was like, you have to give me rights for that. Andi said it was the happiest day of her life. It was so cool that she did not expect it and that we did not look so great, so it’s more raw. First, someone said, “Can I have a picture?” and it’s part of my camera crew pala. Then one by one these people are coming, singing the song and at first she didn’t get it. She thought it was some weird showbiz prank until she heard the words, “Marry Me.” I exclaim, “That’s so sweet. Super sweet!” And in true GP fashion, he simply states, “I make it harder for the other guys.” Gotta admit, he does set the bar high. Andi recalls of the day, “I was so ugly! If I knew, I would’ve fixed up; I’ll put mascara or lip balm, whatever. shirt, shorts, tsinelas. I really didn’t know.” Which makes it all the more authentic and endearing, and not an easy feat, especially at an airport. Goes to show the lengths GP will go for Andi. In 2014, and luckily without trying too hard, the couple was blessed with the news of a pregnancy. Andi remembers not being overly weepy or needy during this time. “I craved for steak a lot. So every time GP and I would eat out, it’s always like, ‘STEAK, STEAK!’ There were a few times that I would get so emotional—I’d cry, or sometimes I just need attention, but my whole pregnancy was easy. I didn’t tell GP in the middle of the night, “Get me this!” Nothing like that.” Enviably, her first birthing experience was just as stress-free. “15 minutes—I pushed three times, and after I gave birth I was like, “You know what, I can do this again. I can do it ten more times!” (Laughs) I believe that nothing is more a testament to a wife’s love for her husband than that willingness to bear his children, and more than once at that. Goes to prove the distance (and baby weight) Andi will endure for GP. After the elaborate proposal, the even more tearful wedding, honeymoon, pregnancy, come the realities of raising a family, and I ask how this has changed their lives from a coosome twosome into kinfolk. GP is only too eager to gush about his wife as a mom. “I try to be a good father, but it’s been 2 and 1/2 months, so I don’t know yet if I am. But Andi is a great mother. Seeing her, and her selflessness— it’s just a testimony of all mothers. Seeing Andi as a fulltime mom, waking up at 3 in the morning, changing Olivia, being so selfless—she’s really my hero. It makes me love and appreciate her even more. I don’t know if I have the patience to do what she does. Well, of course, I’m sure I would. (Laughs)” But let’s not forget the sleep deprivation that comes with the territory. Andi is still getting used to the night momma duties herself. “I’m kinda still adjusting. (Laughs) Thank God, Olivia sleeps longer during the night, and also that GP, his ‘clock’ is at night—so in the morning, it’s all me, and during nighttime, it’s him. At 10 o’clock, I sleep, and he gets home at either 1 or 2, that’s all him from 2 to 4 AM. So basically, I get to rest. We have our shifts.” Parenting is a circus act, and juggling busy careers, and relationships with your other half and kids is some of the tricks you only try to master in time. Andi is grateful. “What’s good about radio is that it’s just three hours of work for me. So

the whole morning, this is when I answer emails, have meetings during lunchtime. It’s not an 8 to 5 job that I have to go to, and then I love what I’m doing still, so I get to balance my time and I think I’ll be able to balance it naman. Or if not, I’ll take Olivia with me.” (Smiles) GP is just as appreciative about his day job, which includes marketing, writing copy, doing TVC’s for one of the most esteemed real estate developers in town. “I’m lucky that Century understands my lifestyle. I’m really a 3 PM guy because at 3 PM was when Jesus Christ died, so when I go to work, I kinda die a little bit. I’m just kidding! I go to work 3; I come home 7:30 PM, and have dinner with my wife and kid. Going to work allows me to have a lot of time with Olivia, because Olivia wakes up at 7, so regardless of what time I go home, I wake up at 7. I really play with her because she’s really in a good mood. I have my conversations with her. I don’t know if you’ve seen these conversations?” I state, “Of course. It’s one of my questions,” the #convoswitholivia and how it got on. GP laughs, “I truly believe they happen—I’m very adept in translating baby talk, but really I have a conversation with her sometimes. She has certain moments where she’s really alive and awake, like at lunchtime, morning, and then at 4 AM. When I go home from the club, I sleep for a while and then Andi breastfeeds. I’ve never changed a single diaper. That’s one thing. I’ve never changed a single diaper but I do prepare

everything. For example she’s crying, so what I do is, I articulate everything that I’m doing so that Andi wakes up. “Babe, I’m preparing the water now. Did you hear me? I’m preparing the cotton balls. The diaper is here, the tissue, the towel.” And by that time she’ll be, “Okay, I know. I know.” And then she’s the one who cleans. It’s kind of weird for me being in a family of five boys and one girl. To be honest, there are two things that came to my mind when she was born. Basically, she was given to Andi, then to me, and the first thing that I did was of course, I counted the toes. I counted 11, and I panicked. F*ing eleven toes. Holy sh*t! Diba? I’m like, “I’m sorry.” And then I counted again, 10. And then, I looked up and I’m like, “Where is the d*ck?!” Because I’m the oldest of five boys right? So every… you know, I’ve seen d*cks. Right? And I’m looking for the…Oh wait, I have a daughter pala.” Naturally, the room bursts into hysterics. Those #convoswitholivia grew rather organically to this father and daughter, and they will be remembered virtually for it. “It just happened. Even when she was one month, I would talk to her and she would be cooing. A lot of people are saying they can’t see clearly until they’re at 3 months. I really think she’s very advanced. When I speak to her, it seems like she understands what I’m saying. And so I keep on talking, and it’s like she reacts. In the beginning, she wasn’t reacting with sounds but she was JULY-AUGUST 2015 philippines

reacting with expressions and now, the funny thing is she really smiles everytime she hears, “You’re the most beautiful girl in the world.” And then now, her Lola says it and she smiles, Andi’s sisters do it and she smiles, and so I guess nagmana sa ‘kin in terms of egotistic and narcissistic, but we have to just really say that she takes after her mom in terms of looks—and thank God for that!” I added though, that I see some of him in Olivia. “It’s a little combination because when she’s sleeping, her eyes are kinda like mine because I’m chinky-eyed, but when she opens her eyes, it’s all Andi.” Regardless of whom she takes after more, I think we can all agree that Olivia’s loveliness, especially for an infant at that, is already enchanting—the numbers on her IG page don’t lie. She looks so innocent and cute that you want to pick her up and carry her around yourself, and for lack of a better word, so… white. She looks like she smells delicious even in photos alone, that I’m sure TVCs and a career in the limelight is hers if her parents wanted it. In fact, she’s so adorable that she and Andi were chosen

Speaking of nappies, we asked Andi what she totes around in her diaper bag. “You know what, I’m still trying to figure that out. I really don’t know! (Laughs) First time I went out, I only brought like three pairs of Pampers. And my mom was like, “Why only three?!” So we actually had to buy, because it was kulang. Well of course, we have Pampers, baby wipes, toys, a camera, and we have her clips–because she has hair, (Laughs), an outfit change. So there, basic ones. Slowly getting there.”

How else has parenting changed the dynamics of their relationship? Andi confesses, “I guess we grew up together. We’re still growing up together. It’s so nice to see GP’s gentle side. People know him as mayabang, or he’s like this or that, diba? You’ve seen the interview. But it’s nice that even when I was pregnant, he would sing to my belly every night. I don’t know if he told you when Olivia came out and Olivia heard his voice, she kept quiet? Up to now, no fail, even if he’s gone the whole day, or comes home late at 4 AM when Olivia’s awake, he would sing for her.” GP recalls those 9 months, “All throughout Andi’s pregnancy, I have been talking to Olivia. I would read her the history of Porsche or the French Revolution, and I speak to her as I would to an adult ‘cause they say that it helps with mental development. Even when she was in the tummy, she would recognize my voice. The cool thing about it was after Andi gave birth, Olivia was crying and crying. At first, you’re worried, you’re scared, you’re about to pass out, right? You wanna be in front and see the blood and she starts crying and then, okay good. And then after that, she was given to the mom,

she was given to the dad and doc cleans… and then she’s crying and crying, and she was put on the weighing table and then the minute I go there and I say, “Hey baby…” she just stopped crying. The nurses were like, ‘The baby whisperer.’ And I’m like, “Cause I’ve been talking to her ever since.” And it was fantastic. It was a great feeling.” I asked if he welled up during this birthing experience. He admits, “I did. I turned. Pulled a nose hair and then… No, I’m just kidding. This particular one, I actually did tear almost as much as when the Lakers won.” Of course, he jests. I pointed out that I remember seeing his posts about his nephew before he had Olivia, and it always seemed to me that like he likes babies. “Yeah, it’s always been a dream of mine to have my own, and the thing is that I was also very scared. Because of my lifestyle and how it would change things.” For other first time parents like themselves, Andi serves up a few pointers she’s picked up. “I’m sure a lot are gonna say this, but while you’re pregnant, get sleep. Get a massage, do your nails, do whatever you want. Don’t forget yourself. Hmm, what else? I’m still a new parent (laughs)” She adorably admits. In fact, in order to concentrate on Olivia, she had to put other duties on hold, like her blog. “When I started my blog, I thought it was easy. I was like, okay, I’ll feature a restaurant, then I’ll go here but later on, after I gave birth…I don’t know how moms who are bloggers do it. I have no yaya, so the time that I have is actually my time to myself. It’s when I take a shower, do grocery, or when I have to answer emails— but never to actually edit photos, or type something. It’s just not on my mind. But maybe in the near future, I’ll work on it.” I agree with Andi that having a blog is like having a job on its own, something that I can’t commit to myself. So to round up the advice, Andi says, “Sleep when the baby sleeps, and I totally support the whole breastfeeding moms out there. Hands up to moms who even breastfeed till like 5 or 3, I mean how do you have so much milk? (Laughs) Breastfeeding is just like

the answer to everything. Also, spend time with your husband.” I ask Andi why they decided not to have a nanny in their employ. She explains, “It was never a decision until we actually had Olivia. We have a helper at home who does the laundry, the dishes, all the chores—but when it comes to Olivia, I don’t know, it just happened.” GP mentioned up to this day that their yaya doesn’t carry Olivia. Andi says, “The yaya never held the baby. It just happened that way, and we were saying that maybe in the

next few months, we’ll let the yaya hold her. But now, since we can still take care of her...” While Andi is learning to master the homefront, what daddy duties can GP boast of, since he told us that changing nappies is still out of the question. GP divulges, “Basically, the routine is I come home 4 o’ clock, then I wake up Andi by commentating on what I’m doing. I’m going to the bathroom now with water. And the cotton, I’m putting it, and she does the wiping. Then she does the

breastfeeding, and I do the burping. As with Daddy, who’s always in the mood after a drink, Olivia is in a good mood after a drink. So after I burp her, she’s in a very good mood and we talk to each other, play with each other for like about 30 minutes and then she passes out—as with Daddy, who passes out. (Laughs)” I was surprised to learn that Olivia sleeps with them on the bed as not many parents choose so. It requires being half-awake and strictly watching your movements in bed, but all my three bcmedia.ph

kids co-slept with us from the start, and I couldn’t have been more at peace. GP says, “She sleeps with us and lately, she’s been sleeping on the bed. There’s so many ‘experts’ on social media, like, “Please turn her over.” And I’m thinking, “Excuse me?” I mean she’s very advanced, it’s amazing! Even the doctors are saying she’s very advanced. She can already see colors, she flips herself over, and there was this one video, at 1 month, she was lifting her head. Someone said, “That’s just some sort of camera trick!” And I was like, “How silly would I be when I say she can lift her head when she can’t lift her head?” So there, I’ve mastered the burping. There’s one time—maybe this caused my aversion to it—she was a month old, and I was playing with her...She was about to take a bath, so she’s completely naked. And Andi said, “Wait, I have to go to the bathroom.” So she went, and Olivia was laughing and laughing and suddenly, she’s like [acts out how Olivia puked on his clothes], and I was covered in crap. That’s how I’ve learned to burp. I’ve also mastered the car seat.” What about the dreaded stroller? GP confesses that, “Andi gets pissed off because one time, me and Kevin [Tan], bcmedia.ph

we were laughing because we were trying to open the stroller. And we couldn’t! If you watch that Zoolander movie, there were two monkeys that were banging on the computer. We felt like those two monkeys! And apparently, we got the ‘Porsche of strollers,’ the Bugaboo. We were going to the Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in Bataan where everything is cobblestone and my stroller has shocks, so that was great. I’ve learned also to kind of appease her. She can be a spoiled one.” I assure him that the eldest usually are overindulged. GP tells me, “Before, I trained her that I’ll leave you there and when you cry, I know what you need. Either you need to be changed, or you need to feed. Don’t cry because you need to be picked up. But then the lolas messed that up. There are 3 rules now. One, you can’t hold or carry her all the time. Two, please don’t wear cologne, because I wanna smell ‘baby.’ I forgot what the third rule is, but now I’ve learned how to appease Olivia to make her fall asleep after crying a lot.” As still newbies to parenting, I ask about all the advice they must be getting from everyone. Andi states it’s probably the most challenging part of the

job. “Dealing with everybody. There’s so many people that give you advice, and at the same time judge you for doing it. You know what I mean? There are other moms that, for example, formula feed because they don’t have breast milk anymore and they get judged for doing that. People can be very judgmental. I have my way of raising my kid, and you have your own way. So it’s just really all the advice and everybody clamoring up in your ear.” Speaking of advice, what does Andi remember from her own folks that she wants to imbibe in raising her own? I ask if she will be strict. Andi recalls, “My parents were strict with me because I was the first girl, and I’m the Ate–so no boyfriends–and then I couldn’t use the phone or couldn’t talk to any guy until you were a certain age.” It was a different time, I say. “Yeah, a different time. But I will probably follow how they disciplined me, and how my parents taught us how important it was to go to church, to have friends in church, to have that foundation in your life. My parents taught that to me and my siblings, and wherever life may push you or whatever people might say, you still have that foundation. You know who you are, you know whom you pray to. That’s what I wanna share with Olivia.” Other best advice they got, and who was it from? The couple chose their baby’s Godparents well. GP states, “I have 8 ninongs and all of them are people who I consider as good fathers— Louie Ysmael, who in spite of the fact that he might not be a good husband, he’s still a good father—but he’s a playboy. (Laughs) Marco Antonio, who’s a good father of two kids. Raj Sadhwani, who’s my partner in Draft [Gastropub] too, who’s really a good father to two girls. So the advice they gave me—as well as their wives—is it really does change you. The second advice is they grow up really fast, so enjoy every moment. I believe it’s true, every single moment, I cherish— and that’s the beauty of technology now. Back in the day, you’ll have a picture every year and you had to develop films. Now, I take a picture of my baby everyday. I see her grow into a more beautiful person. I have a memory for everyday, and I’m glad she’s only two and a half months and it feels like forever.” What have they both found out to be true about parenting? Andi states, “That there’s so much joy in it. It’s just so much joy that I don’t know how to express it. And like everything that every mom would tell me is real. And even more.” GP concurs with his wife. “I would say I’m complete. It’s a different feeling. It’s higher than any high. It’s exciting. It’s scary. It’s thrilling. It’s fulfilling. Like I said, having a child has made me complete.” I ask him if it felt like, ‘what was he doing before Olivia?’ GP knows exactly what I’m talking about. “Yeah. And why did I wait so long to have her? I’m very, very thankful. You know, a lot of couples are trying so hard. We’ve been blessed so quickly. Now, everything that I do has a purpose. Not like it didn’t before but now I’m like, “Should I buy a new watch?” Or, “should I save the money for her IS?” So those are the things that I’ve been thinking about now. I don’t want Andi to go back to work but she’s just not built that way. Even just yesterday, she had to do something with Pampers and Dove. But the great thing is that my kid already has endorsements—so that’s gonna go to the tuition fund. Or the Porsche. For her. (Laughs)” bc

Neil: This is very fun. Here we go. You’ve done a number of fitness and fashion modeling, and you’ve had your second child. How long does it take for you to get back to that kind of shape after you’ve had a child? Samantha: Well, I had no idea after my first pregnancy how long

that would take, and thankfully it came together pretty quickly. Within three months, I was back down to my fighting weight, and I would say it took another couple of months to firm and tone to get to the place that I had hoped to be. N: Did you change your workout routine because of that? Or did you dive back into your regular routine? S: I think the biggest thing was that I felt like I was in shape

prior to getting pregnant, and I maintained my workout regimen at a reduced intensity with doctor’s supervision and the use of a heart rate monitor. I continued that same course of action to keep active throughout the pregnancy until 35 weeks in.

N: [Hears a familiar sound] I thought it was coming from over there and I was terrified. I thought the ice cream man drove in here. S: And I would like the ice cream man to drive into my house,

N: (Laughs) Sorry, going back to your fitness routine... S: To be honest—second pregnancy, a lot more pressure—

because I knew I could bounce back with the first pregnancy. The second time around, the body vaguely has muscle memory but the elasticity memory, so things get stretched out in directions a lot quicker than you want them to. Are they gonna snap back as fast? Definitely not. I’m older, but I feel like, thankfully, having continued to work out helped a lot. I was on bed rest for the last month of my pregnancy. I mean, you literally either have to sit on me or have a doctor say, “If you move around too much, that baby’s gonna come too early.” That made me sit down pretty darn fast.

N: Totally. Does your older daughter, Josselyn, already know what mommy does for a living? Does she ever see you on television, and is that second nature? S: I think she doesn’t know what it means to not have a

show— whether it’s a stage show or mommy being on the TV screen. We don’t sit at home and watch my shows, she’s

But when I hosted Dancing with the Stars, she was on the set while we were shooting or during rehearsals, and that’s every little girls’ dream to watch all those costumes and dancers. She comes to Entertainment Tonight with me, she sits in the voiceover booth with me. She puts the headphones on and does her own voiceovers after I’m done with mine, because she wants to take her turn. So I think it’s all very second nature to her. She’s not even 4-years old, so she doesn’t quite grasp the concept of what “being on television” means. She could definitely watch television on her own anyway, beyond the occasional Dora or Kai-Lan. I love Kai-lan. I think it’s a brilliant show in terms of that it’s actually given us a basis for a platform to have conversations about emotions—caring, and responsibility. N: What other kind of children’s entertainment is she watching? S: I love the Disney movies and she is a huge fan of every Disney

princess, especially of Ariel. But watching G-Rated films of any kind, through a now almost 4-year old’s eyes, gives me a whole new perspective on what I will allow her to watch, and also on what scares her. To be honest, I feel that practically every movie out there that’s rated G has some very scary parts. N: In what sense? S: We tried as hard as we could to wait as close to her turning 2

before we allowed her to watch videos. Although we did introduce her, at 9 months, to Your Baby Can Read, the video series. The only

reason I even allowed that is because I met the doctor who is behind it, Dr. Titzer, and he said he felt the same way. He didn’t wanna let his kids watch TV. But this program works in a certain way to help the semantic of the brain. Now whether it’s all true or a wonderful line of marketing, I don’t know. But I thought that she learned a little bit, and it’s very limited viewing anyhow. We’ve always prescribed to the Association of Pediatrics in terms of viewing limitations. So unless we’re on an airplane, we’ll let her watch a movie because she can’t get up and run around anyhow. Basically, the new Tinkerbell movies are pretty benign. Tinkerbell has her own characters now, and they’re actually quite cute girls. However, even with Winnie the Pooh—which she saw on the airplane the other day—made her burst into tears because the Heffalump was captured. And I felt terrible because usually we always watch with her, but I was at an airplane and I thought, well, I had the baby in my lap, how harmful can Winnie the Pooh be? And there she was, hysterical.

are hand-me-downs. My sister has a daughter who’s 15 months older but lives in Minnesota where I’m from, and a really special thing is that we’re able to share clothes. Everytime I go home, I pack up a duffel full of my nieces’ clothes and I bring ‘em. Basically they share some of the most adorable outfits that we’ve had, and it’s a nice way to be able to share a special bond across the country that we wouldn’t normally be able to have if you don’t live in the same city. >> The family is not a popular topic in our culture. Fatherhood and patriarchy are especially unpopular topics. While it may make many adults uncomfortable, many kids need the conversation to happen. I grew up with a single-mom who cleaned houses. She worked very hard and I love her deeply. Through my childhood I saw just how hard it is for a single mom. I also came to recognize, even more so now that I am a father, the impact of not having a dad around. It makes a big difference. We must recognize that if the two-parent family is the actual foundation of society, then everything rests upon it. We will never overcome the challenges confronting us if we ignore out-of-wedlock birthrates nor can we expect the current approaches of our schools to work if their assumptions about the problems are all wrong. Education will have to play a major role in reversing the cycle of out-of-wedlock birthrates. But to do so, educators are going to have to reexamine their underlying philosophies and approaches, and even our current structure of education. For that to happen, society is going to have to change a lot of popular attitudes, including those towards men and fathers. There isn’t time to waste, we need our dads back.

The Book Trust recently reported that over 80% of young fathers don’t enjoy reading to their kids, and only 25% of fathers under 25 read to their kids at all. Qread, a reading comprehension app that encourages parents to interact with their children as they learn, helps eliminate the unease of parents who don’t read to their children. According to the study, only 25% of fathers under 25 read anything to their kids. According to Precila Birungik, CEO of Appi Dabbi, the developer of Qread, “Younger parents are so connected to their
