Eat, Pray, Love is in the Air While everyone is on full-on celebratory mode, we were also busy trying to come up with a kick-ass cover to follow-up the Most Beautiful Moms issue, and one that would also be timely for the season. It was probably not by accident that we chanced upon a recent international magazine spread featuring Julia Roberts, and a blog entry from who would be our cover model, Daphne Oseña-Paez, about wanting to do a similar shoot. It both struck a chord, and we hope that you like the ‘music’ that BC and Daphne have made together. Certainly, we needed to put a spin on it, such as a three-cover special featuring a unique photo shoot with her family. It is no wonder that Daphne is adored by many, because she can capture your eye and heart like no other—just ask her husband, Patrick Paez, who still looks at her as if they are newlyweds. Their sweet and lovely daughters are an absolute delight to photograph as well, and this turned out to be one of the best stories we’ve worked on— Hollywood photo shoots included.

b c PHILIPPINES { DEC-JAN 2011 } bcmag.ph

To top this issue’s stories, we were granted an exclusive shoot with Atty. Felipe Gozon and his respected family—complete with the cherubic grandsons. Here is a man that I not only respect for his keen business (and common) sense, but someone I admire for his entire being. It might sound like much, but wait ‘til you meet him. Speaking of admiration, I am smitten with the charming Barrientoses. Felix, our country’s best tennis star to date, and Reggie, a star in her law profession as well, together with their darling kids, all welcomed us like old friends into their sublime home. I consider it a gift when we cross paths with such kind people. And regarding friendships made, mine with Soleil Moon Frye, whom you’ll see here too, is one that I treasure. She is a gem of a woman—spending time with her and her loved ones always warms my heart. As a child I idolized Punky Brewster, and even wore outfits and sneakers with Punky’s face on it (yes, she knows this), so it was probably in my stars to meet her at some point. My

fashion sense dictated so. I hope the BC Moment section takes you all to our personal experiences with them during a major turning point in their lives. Sarah Shahi is another lady to reckon with. She has a fire in her spirit that you hope will rub off on you. Sarah’s shoot was done at our studio in Beverly Hills, CA, when she was still expecting her first child, a super cute son named Wolf. On the homefront, my daughters (Sabina, 7 and Maxine, 4) are excited for their first time to celebrate Christmas in the Philippines together. We left the country when my eldest was not even 2, so I’m preparing to show them a grand, queso de bola time. Can’t wait to start feasting—the double digit dress size will have to do for now. I hope you like this issue as much as we loved making it. Please e-mail me at editor@bcmag. ph for anything. Happy Holidays! May God bless you and your families even more.

Santa’s Reindeers Ingredients: 1 bag of Peanut M&M’s 1 jar of peanut butter 1 bag of chocolate covered pretzels confectioner’s sugar 6 chocolate cupcakes Instructions: 1. If you’re making your own cupcakes, bake a dozen as directed in the cake mix packaging. Let it cool. 2. Use a knife to evenly coat each cupcake with a tablespoon of peanut butter. 3. Take a pretzel and break one of its curves so that one end will have a pointed edge, which will be inserted into the cupcake. Attach a whole pretzel to the horn using some peanut butter. For baby horns, use half a pretzel. 4. To create tiny ears, break a pretzel curve and insert it into the cupcake at the side of the reindeer horns. 5. For the eyes, take some colored peanut M&M’s and gently place them on the peanut butter icing. The red or brown peanut M&M’s can serve as the nose. 6. Lightly sprinkle your reindeers with confectioner’s sugar for a final touch of “snow.”

3 Kings Bacon Camels Ingredients: 6 pieces of sliced bread Quick-melt cheese or cheese spread 200g bacon, chopped finely 1 can sliced mushrooms, chopped finely Camel-shaped cookie cutters Instructions: 1.Take bacon and chop finely. Lay out in a baking pan and top with chopped, fried mushrooms and bacon bits. 4. Toast in the oven for 2 to 3 minutes, or until cheese melts. For Santa’s Reindeers, you can opt to bake your own cupcakes (Betty Crocker’s Super Moist Cake Mix in Devil’s Food flavor is a great choice), or if you’re in a hurry for the party, grab a dozen plain chocolate cupcakes at the nearest bakeshop.

Former news anchor Cristina Peczon-Rodriguez talks about her change of pace, raising a family abroad, and what gets her up in the mornings Photographs and story by

's been half an hour since my 20-month old toddler has gone down for a nap. As we mothers know, nap time is one of the most wonderful times of day. Not that you don't want to miss a moment of the joy watching your little one grow up. But, let's face it, even us moms deserve an hour or two (if we're lucky) of quiet time. Today's nap is a particular victory for me. About 3 weeks ago, my firstborn learned not only how to climb out of his crib, but also how to use a door knob. Achieving snooze time at home was something I could only fantasize about. I guiltily admit that I resorted to taking my son on an imaginary errand everyday, right before nap time, so I could lull him to sleep on the road.

14

Earlier, another mom shared with me her routine of tiring her little one out before setting him up to recognize it was time for some shut eye. I tried it today and it worked like a charm! In turn, I b c PHILIPPINES { DEC-JAN 2011 } bcmag.ph

passed on how my husband and I successfully trained Aiden to go to bed at night with minimal ceremonies. I knew it could be done, I just needed to hear from another mom that it wasn't torture my child wouldn't survive. It is times like these that I longingly dream of being back in the Philippines—where at the very least I could hope to lean on a yaya to help soothe my child to sleep. Or, perhaps I could turn to one of Aiden's grandparents to watch over him while I, too, take some desperately needed slumber. As I write this, I am in my final trimester, just counting the weeks until our second child is born. Sigh. Having some help to raise another little one with a super energetic toddler would be great right about now. But I chose to return to the US to raise my family, so I have no right to complain. holiday issue

Only five years ago, my lifestyle was the complete opposite of my full-time mommy life today. Back then, my days were all about news stories, interviews, and deadlines, topped off with the prime time newscast at ten o'clock. I had come home close to midnight for so many years, that my natural body clock treated nights like they were day. Seventeen years in the broadcasting business is a long time. News and travel was all I knew. But it dawned on me that a successful career was not enough. It was an easy decision to leave the lights and cameras behind and concentrate on my personal life. After a whirlwind engagement to a long time friend, I married my confidant, and now best friend. It is to date, the best decision I have ever made. There is no news story or award nomination in my years in media that can top the happiness my marriage has given me day after day. The milestones I have witnessed watching my little one grow are more priceless and meaningful to me than any international coverage or interview I have ever done. My days now start at the crack of dawn so I can prepare my husband's home cooked baon before rushing through as many chores as I can before my son wakes up. My days of endless tapings and interviews are now replaced by playdates, swim lessons, art classes and trips to the local children's museums and petting zoos. My planner is booked out three weeks full of social events for Aiden's calendar! It's all about the kids, once you have them. Being a hands-on parent definitely has its challenges, especially when one doesn't have the luxury of a nearby family, or one's ever faithful support group of long time friends. But it also gives one the determination to get things done on your own, knowing there isn't anyone else to lean on but yourself.

16

I listen and learn from other moms every chance I get. We eat only at restaurants that have high chairs and crayons. At home, I multi-task play cooking time and actual dinner cooking time. I have mastered the art of setting up a stroller in seconds flat, despite my ever growing belly. Grocery shopping becomes an opportunity to teach my son new words. I'm on the go every waking moment of the day—but I am also in bed most nights by 10 pm—just as my former newscast would just start to broadcast. It seems so long ago. The grass is always greener on the other side. Deciding to raise our family in the US is no different. Especially on those chilly winter mornings where I'd much rather snooze just fifteen minutes more. It's usually right about then that my toddler shows up and breathes on my face with a huge, toothy grin. Suddenly his middle of the night call for milk seems like a far memory, and I find both the strength and the enthusiasm to get up and do it all over again. I'd do anything for that smile. And you know you would too. bc b c PHILIPPINES { DEC-JAN 2011 } bcmag.ph

Go downhill, heli-, or crosscountry skiing, and snowboarding. Who could resist those big blue eyes and toothy smile? Despite a slew of movies and DVDs under his belt, Spongebob remains down to earth (or ocean). BC had the exclusive privilege of getting personal with this perpetually enthusiastic—and undeniably cool—sea sponge

BC: Is it hard being a sponge and living underwater? Spongebob: No. Being a sponge is soft and squishy, not hard. BC: How do you not expand and dry up the ocean? S: I do Pilates three times a week. BC: What can you say about those people who think you're more like a block of cheese or a kitchen sponge than a sea sponge? S: I’d say “cheese off !” and the gouda sea horse they rode in on. BC: Describe your neighborhood in three words. S: 1)FAB. 2)U. 3)LOUS. 4)Period. Sorry that’s four words. BC: Random childhood memory? S: Eggs. BC: Who are your heroes? S: Mr. Krabs, for inventing the Krabby Patty, and of course, Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy—Defenders of the Deep! BC: Describe your relationship with your cousins, Todd,

oliday celebrations are the time to bring out the finest drinks and best-kept secret recipes, and it’s also the time of increasing waistlines and binge eating.

By the time January rolls around, you’re probably still munching on leftovers while “worrying” about gaining weight (which you already have), and hoping to come up with better New Year’s resolutions than the last. Before you go on a diet spree, take the time to understand how to detoxify, and what it really means to ‘take out the trash’ from your body. Tracing its roots back to Chinese culture, detox is actually one of the principles of naturopathic medicine. Naturopathologist and author

No matter what time of year, it is always good to add exercise into your health regimen. Sweating is one of the best ways to get rid of the toxins in your body, so go ahead and take a 20-minute brisk walk or jog in the morning.

of “Clean Up Your Diet,” Max Tomlinson explains that when the food intake is increased, the toxins in the body may accumulate, and may not be disposed of properly, thus forming fat. To prevent this from happening, people undergo a detoxification diet, which requires more health-conscious food choices, and more nutritious meals. A word of caution before going on any type of diet, make sure to check with your dietician for any special nutritional needs that you may have. For pregnant and lactating women, it is best to stick to the diet recommended by your doctor. For those who just want to get rid of the amassed toxins in your system, try these simple but beneficial guidelines for a better digestive system throughout the year. holiday issue

wellness FIBER UP Go easy on your stomach by downing natural fruit and vegetable juices, which are low in fat and high in vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Whole grains, such as oatmeal, are recommended for breakfast. It helps kick start your day with a full tummy, while maintaining your digestive system’s regular movement. Daily servings of natural fruit and vegetable juice also keep your body hydrated, especially after the all the booze. GO ORGANIC If your holiday menu involved a lot of processed or preserved ingredients, chances are, your body has already absorbed some added chemicals. Make a positive change by picking all-natural food ingredients from fresh produce. Try to veer away from anything processed, as it is most likely loaded with artificial ingredients. Cut Back Watch out for food that are high in fat, salt, and sugar. Remember that you’ve already had your fair share, so you must go back to eating in moderation in order to enable your body to deal with the toxins that are taking residence. SUBSTITUTE Go for brown rice instead of white, as it contains more amounts of selenium, magnesium, B vitamins, and manganese, which is aids in converting protein and carbohydrates into energy. Brown rice is also less processed then white, giving you the health benefits of its bran and germ. Red meat can also be replaced with kidney beans, pinto beans, mung beans, garbanzos, green peas, and lentils, which are easier to digest. If you can’t give up eating meat, go for alternatives such as fish and chicken. Use oils that are rich in Omega-3, a polyunsaturated fatty acid that helps flush out the toxins from the intestine. DECAFFEINATE If you can go slow on caffeine-laden drinks and food, try it for a bit. Coffee is loaded with calories, and its caffeine content will only induce anxiety, making you more stressed than you already are. Calm your bundle of nerves with chamomile tea instead. bc

DETOX STAPLES FOR A HEALTHY STOMACH (AND BODY) PRUNE JUICE

Prunes contain sorbitol, a stool-loosening sugar. Its juice is a vitaminpacked, fiber-rich drink that is also a good source of iron and potassium. It’s also loaded with phytochemicals, which prevent the oxidation of bad cholesterol.

calamansi

Calamansi is a citrus fruit that serves as a great source of vitamin C, fiber, potassium, vitamin A, and calcium. Its juice is a mild laxative, promoting better digestion. For those with hyperacidity, watch that you don’t drink the juice too sour.

GREEN TEA

Green tea contains catechins, which helps lower LDL cholesterol. Studies have also shown that the antioxidants present in green tea aid in more efficient fat elimination and control, by raising the body’s metabolism.

kids get more sick at night? W o r d s b y H e n r ik Ba t a l l o n e s

Is your child feeling the blues during bedtime? Discover why sicknesses seem to get worse when the sun goes down

n

othing is more troubling at home than a sick child. If you think those bills to pay and work piled up are worrisome, the feeling of panic and helplessness when your little one is miserable and ailing takes the cake. Even I, as a kid, had frequent asthma attacks, and whenever that happens, it always puts the household on edge. Once I start to have difficulty breathing, my parents would bring me to the neighborhood clinic to be nebulized. I’ll feel much better, until later at night, when I go to sleep. I’ll have difficulty breathing again— and it’s worse than earlier in the day.

It’s not unusual for people, young or old, to get sick in the morning, improve later on, and feel worse in the evening. One reason is our body’s natural need to rest at night. During the day, we are active and preoccupied. It leaves us tired, giving illnesses a chance to make itself felt, or strike back. Another is the changing pressures in our body when we lie down to sleep. It goes without saying that anytime you feel that your child’s health may be in serious danger (unusually high fever, breathing problems, profuse bleeding, large wound, strange rash, or is having a seizure), call your doctor or leave for the E.R. right away. If your baby is under 4 months old, any strange symptom is subject to immediate medical attention.

DIMETAPP SYRUP 60ML Decongestant and antihistamine to relieve nasal congestion and runny nose, P93.25, Mercury Drug

Allergies “Allergens tend to be more prevalent at night,” states pediatrician Dr. Carolina Yupano-Endriga. With increased exposure and decreased resistance, the chances of a child suffering from allergies go up, especially when he sleeps in a room full of allergens, such as dust, chemicals, or pollutants. Skin rashes get worse at night since the body, no longer bombarded by lots of stimuli during the day, gets the chance to focus on the discomfort. Often, the application of skin allergy creams can help your kid feel less itchy. Allergic rhinitis is also aggravated by the presence of allergens, and can cause runny nose and frequent sneezing. Physician-approved antihistamines can be administered to make your child feel better. Asthma also gets worse at night: the allergens cause further inflammation of the airways, making it more difficult for your child to breathe. It helps to have bronchodilators, such as salbutamol, on stock, but in the case of a severe asthma attack, it is suggested to bring your little one to the doctor ASAP. ColdS, coughs, and headaches “Anything that causes congestion gets worse at night,” says Dr. Baby Paiso. For example, when your child has a cold, his airways are blocked by mucus. Salinase nasal spray can come in handy to help your child blow out the mucus. If you have an infant, a bulb syringe will help you remove the mucus.

KOOL FEVER COOLING GEL SHEET Ready to use soothing pad for the relief of fever, toothache, or flushed cheeks. Sticks comfortably on skin P152.75, Watsons

SALBUTAMOL VENTOLIN IN ORANGE FLAVOR 60ML Sugar-free syrup for the relief of bronchospasm, such as asthma, P112.75, Mercury Drug

ASCORBIC ACID CLUSIVOL POWER C 60ML Vitamin C supplement for a stronger immune system, P56.25, Watsons

The same also happens with cough, especially when phlegm is involved. During the day, when your child is standing up, the phlegm goes down the body. When he lies down, it flows to the already irritated throat, making the cough worse. Headaches also get worse due to changes in blood circulation when they rest in bed. As more blood goes to the head, pressure in the area is increased. Pain relievers should ease the discomfort for a while. Viral infections Our body’s decreased resistance at night also makes it easy for viruses to strike. The first sign is often a fever, which is nature’s way of fighting foreign organisms that could cause further illnesses. Antipyretics, such as paracetamol, can be given to the child to relieve the fever. He should also drink lots of water to help regulate body temperature. However, Paiso warns that fever could be signs of other illnesses, and the kid should be sent to the doctor as soon as possible. Another common viral infection that gets worse at night is croup. Prevalent in kids aged five and below, it causes their vocal chords to swell, leading to difficulty breathing, and causing a seal-like barking sound. A cool-mist humidifier and ibuprofen may help make your child feel better. Some doctors advice that if you have a heated shower, turn it on full blast and wait for the steam. Sit inside the bathroom with your child, and let him breathe in the warm mist. Time heals croup, but within 2 to 3 days, a visit to the doctor is recommended.

In a nutshell Your first defense is a wellstocked medicine cabinet. Pain relievers, such as paracetamol and ibuprofen, may help with headaches. Also have bronchodilators, antipyretics and antihistamines on stock, in case your child has an allergy attack. Your doctor should be able to guide you on the formulation and dosage of the medicines.

38

Apart from watching their condition closely, you should also keep your sick child calm, as emotional stress can further aggravate their illness. “Kids are very emotional, especially the younger ones, who tend to panic,” YupanoEndriga said. “You should be able to assure your child that things will get better.”

b c PHILIPPINES { DEC-JAN 2011 } bcmag.ph

Watch the symptoms as they develop. Make a journal, and join forces with your spouse or household help in monitoring your sick child. Write down info such as temperature, last time and what kind of medication was given (as well as dosage). These records will be very helpful to your physician.

A visit to the appropriate doctor should be done if the illness is persistent. Your medical care provider should be able to tell what caused the sudden flare-up, and trace its cause. (In my case, my asthma was aggravated by the stuffed toys in my bedroom, and the very bed I was sleeping on.)

Finally, the most important step to preventing such breakouts: keep your child healthy. Proper diet and hygiene makes your child more resistant to illnesses— and when they do strike, whatever time of the day it may be, they get easier to manage.

party planning Whether it’s a Christmas party, birthday celebration, or a simple family get-together, make sure you know these tips by heart, for a hassle-free, memorable gathering

T-MINUS 3 DAYS:

Collect - Head to the grocery for the perishable items you’ll need. At this point, the ingredients for the menu should be complete. Assign Tasks – If you have house help or family members pitching in to do the work, ensure that they are aware of your guest list, especially the elders and kids. Assign them to watch over the little ones, and make sure they stay out of the kitchen while you do the last-minute preparations on the day of the party. Gear Up – Start preparing tableware, glassware, tablecloths, and napkins. If you’re planning on playing music but don’t want to deal with hired disc jockeys and their spaceconsuming equipment, grab your iPod and create a playlist or burn a CD of your favorite, catchy tunes for the celebration. Keep the music GP by checking the songs for inappropriate lyrics, as you don’t want your kids (or worse, your guests and their children) to hear profanity or offensive messages. Connect your iPod to speakers and crank it up to create a full party experience.

T-MINUS 7 DAYS: T-MINUS 30 DAYS:

Get Organized – The first step to every party plan is to know the when’s, what’s, who’s, and where’s of the occasion. Are you planning a baby shower, Christening party, or a Thanksgiving gettogether? Determining the purpose of your party will help you in deciding on the details such as theme and menu. Pick a date and venue, estimate your guest count, and decide on the budget for your party. When sure about your guest list, send out invitations as early as you can. Create a weekly schedule that will help you eliminate tasks gradually, and help decrease the pre-party rush.

note to self...

T-MINUS 21 DAYS:

Clean Up – It’s never too early to remove all the clutter around the house. Do the major cleaning up now, so you won’t have to worry about it later. Minor tidying up can be done a couple of days before the party. Ensure that your home or venue is kid-and-elderly-friendly by fixing uneven floors, covering protruding knobs or screws, and installing safety gates on staircases (if your party is to be held on an upper floor, or by the pool). Rearrange – Take out your guest list and map out the areas for your guests according to age groups. Keep kids in one area where they can play without disrupting the party for other guests. Elders can stay in a section where the food, rest rooms, and exits are easily accessible. If the party is at your home, check the lights, and if appropriate, sound system. Replace accordingly and purchase back-up equipment, if possible.

Examine the Guest List – Once you’ve sent out your invitations (remember to place RSVP requests), organize the attending guests list into age groups. Count even the youngest guests, so you can keep track of how much, and the type of food you will serve, plus how much space you’ll need for everyone. Start Stocking – Never wait for the last minute to purchase non-perishable items for your event, as you’ll never know when the nearby grocery will run out of what you need. At this point, you must have the menu planned, with everyone’s health concerns in mind. If you have a guest who’s allergic to a particular type of food, make sure your menu accommodates their dietary constraint.

40

T-MINUS 14 DAYS:

Practice – Avoid failed attempts at cooking an unfamiliar dish by practicing a new recipe, weeks in advance. When your party date arrives, there’s very little to no room for mistakes. Delegate – Family and friends may opt to help you out by bringing food, wine, or other perishables to the party. Inform them of what they could bring, so it would go well with your menu.

festivities

T-MINUS 24 HOURS:

Decorate – Get the young ones to help you spruce up the place and hang up the lights, streamers, and other party paraphernalia within their safe reach. This makes your celebration a family affair, aside from teaching kids the basics of decor. Prepare – If your menu includes recipes that require hours of marinating, thawing or pre-cooking, you should do it well in advance, so that you’ll have enough time to do the last-minute arrangements. Charge your iPod for non-stop music, and ensure your camera and video camera’s batteries are full, so you won’t miss out on those pictureworthy moments.

T-MINUS 4-8 HOURS:

Set Up – You can chill the wine and refrigerate drinks at this point, while you do the last-minute cooking, baking, and preparing. Put together your menu, and begin arranging the tableware. Bring out the Wii, video games, and other toys the little ones would love to play with in their own “kids’ zone.” Place storybooks, coloring books, paper, pencils, and crayons on the tea table (or if you have enough space in your venue, a children’s desk or a small furniture set would be great) for those who would like to draw or read instead. Turning on the TV is often discouraged, unless it’s a viewing party, but you can have the children watch cartoons, movies, or kiddy shows, a long as the kids’ zone is in a separate area.

T-MINUS 1-3 HOURS:

Finalize – Lay out the appetizers in your receiving area or cocktail table, and get the whole family ready for the party. Test your lights and sounds, and put on some music while you do the last-minute preparations. Get your digital camera ready to take snapshots once your guests arrive, for a full documentation of the party, from start to finish!

Plan Ahead – If babies are expected, have a diaper-changing area away from the crowd. A guest room with its own bathroom can serve as the changing area, where basic supplies such as water, cotton, wipes, hand soap, or hand sanitizer should be readily available. This will help avoid the unnecessary bustling around to look for the host to ask for such items.

how to involve elder family members in the merrymaking

“There comes a time when older adults may not be able to do all the things they once could. At this point, family members and friends can find ways to include older adults in these traditions or start new ones.” –David Haber, Professor of Wellness and Gerontology at Ball State University, Indiana Make the festivities easier and more comfortable for your beloved seniors with Haber’s simple yet effective tips on how to accommodate them in any get-together:

If you’re planning an event, make sure that most of the activities will be seniorfriendly, by “tailoring the level of their participation to their physical abilities.” Ask your elderly relatives for input and ideas when planning activities. Remember that their comfort and security should also be a priority during these festivities. holiday issue

Be aware of the nutritional, physical, and health needs of the elderly. Whether your grandma is allergic to nuts, or your uncle is a vegetarian, ask about their health conditions and dietary preferences, so that the food you will serve will not cause any problems for anyone.

Stay connected. Encourage your elders to try social networking sites that will keep them in the know. Because elders are often reluctant to learn new technology, you must have a supportive approach in teaching them how to use e-mail, instant messaging, and social media.

If an elderly relative is disabled, tell your children about his or her condition. Remind them to behave around the person, and be accommodating with seniors, especially those who are using a wheelchair or cane. Teach kids how to be sensitive and considerate to their needs.

You and Steve met on the set of “Reba.” What’s your love story like?

Quick. I picked him out of a lineup. I said, “You. Here. Now.” (Laughs) Can you tell us more about your Elvis-themed wedding in Las Vegas? We saw some pictures, and it looked like lots of fun!

We tried to make it as private as possible, but before we even got married, our pictures were in the Vegas newspaper—along with the details of the big day. I’ve always been a huge Elvis fan, and we wanted to do a wedding that was us—spontaneous, campy, emotional, and tons of fun! We laughed and cried the whole time. It’s my favorite wedding that I’ve ever been to…and I’m not saying that just because it was mine! You were pretty young when your parents divorced. How did this affect you when you were growing up?

My parents divorced officially on my 10th birthday. It obviously affected me, but I refuse to ever be a victim of my circumstances. You get knocked down a few times, but you pick your head up and you keep truckin’ along. It builds strength and character. I learned that from my mother, who is a single mother of three with her own business. She never made us feel like we lacked anything. She was everything all the time, without any complaints. She led by example, and that’s more powerful than words. Plus, she was the cool mom all my friends wanted to hang out with. I want to be all that for our child. How did you and Steve get ready to become mom and dad?

Did you have food cravings? Emotional rollercoaster?

Every night for the first trimester, I had a baked potato with spinach, cheese, black beans and cottage cheese. We would try to go out to restaurants and ended up leaving because nothing sounded as good as my potato. It was a mountain of a potato! Steve thought I was nuts—until he tried it. I do have to pat myself on the back. Though my hormones are clearly not the same, I’m nowhere near what the stereotype is. Steve complimented me the other day and said that he was really lucky because he doesn’t share any of the horror stories his friends’ wives have. Oh, this one is my favorite: the freezer drawer had come off of its wheels and I couldn’t get it back on to shut the drawer. I worked on it for half an hour! Steve comes home and I’m sitting on the kitchen floor, in front of the freezer, crying, saying, “Why is this happening to me? Why?” Ahh, pregnancy. You’ve starred in “The L Word,” and have amazing and sexy magazine photo shoots. What will you tell your son about these experiences?

Hoping not to have that talk for a while! I haven’t thought about it. It was all simply a job—as it will continue to be. It’s part of my business. You were a cheerleader, and you reportedly had a brown belt in karate. You look like you’ll be encouraging your kid to get into sports…

Absolutely! Steve and I are both athletic, so I hope it comes naturally to him. But whatever our child’s interests are, that’s what we will help him pursue. I believe in keeping children busy and active in different activities—basically whatever they gravitate towards. I don’t think it’s good to give kids too much “down time.” Kids need to be productive.

Well, slowly. Hahaha! I felt my maternal instincts kick in the moment the stick turned blue! Something in you just switches. You definitely don’t come first anymore. I think with dads it’s slightly different; it’s gradual. They don’t have the responsibility of caring for the baby, so their job is to make sure the mother is happy. Basically, he’s had to come to terms with whatever I say during these 40 weeks, goes!

We probably both will! But I believe it’s important kids have an appreciation for things. They shouldn’t expect toys or McDonald’s every time they go out, but there should be a balance. I think it’s also important not to deny your children either. Listen to me talk! What do I know? Ask me in a year!

You have one of the best pregnant bodies we’ve ever seen. Is it true you’re a workout fanatic?

Any amusing dad-to-be stories you want to share about Steve?

Hahaha! Thank you! You need to hear that kind of stuff when you are eight months along, and feel like a house! I have days where I like working out. I get a rush out of it and it feels amazing, and then there are those other days...I believe in taking care of your body, especially when you’re pregnant, because it’s not just about you. Studies have shown that mommies who exercise during pregnancy have more responsive, quicker babies. Obviously, I can’t train at the level I did before getting pregnant, but now I walk 5 miles, 3-5 times a week, and swim.

Steve is an amazing husband and father. All the love and connection aside, we genuinely like and have an admiration for one another. I think that’s super important in a relationship. He’s also amazingly funny, and can be a bit over-reactive at times. Um, I want to add, honey, so can I. During our second ultrasound, the baby had the hiccups. Steve freaked out and thought the baby was damaging his head every time he bounced and hit the top of the placenta. Then he thought it was my fault, and that I wasn’t taking deep enough breaths. Oh, dads! Oh, Steve! He’s delicious. bc

waging the war vs. bullying W o r d s b y Ro s a r io Sa n t iago

Sticks and stones may break my bones, and bullies can always hurt me

ost members of Generation-X (now in the 30s to mid-40s), are probably familiar with the movie, Can’t Buy Me Love, which launched a then-scrawny Patrick Dempsey. In it, Dempsey’s character is an outcast, misfit, and daily target of taunting in schools. Molly Ringwald as the ever-resourceful and self-assured Andie Walsh in the screen adaptation of Pretty in Pink, was every young girl’s heroine in the stand against high school bullies. Eric Stoltz became the unlikely heartthrob “Keith,” opposite high school knockout Lea Thompson, and tomboyish Mary Stuart Masterson in Some Kind of Wonderful. In them, all three fall victim at one time, or in some form, to the cruelty of bullying. It’s been over two decades since those films first came out, and while there’s modern adaptations (see Mean Girls), the storyline remains the same. A lot has changed, and much has happened in the way of technology and modernization. With the advent

of what is known as the cyber age—an era where the world has grown smaller thanks to increasingly advanced communication equipment—peer pressure, discrimination, and bullying have moved well past classrooms, cafeterias, and school halls. Though modern gadgets like mobile phones and computers are meant to bring people over various distances closer together, recent events have shown how they can be utilized to widen social gaps, and push people over the brink. In recent years, more and more cases of teen suicides resulting from bullying have come to light. It has gotten so, that even global music superstar, Madonna, has voiced her concern about it. During her recent appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in the U.S., the pop icon said, “I’m incredibly disturbed and saddened by the overwhelming number of teen suicides that have been reported lately because of bullying. To hear that teenagers are taking their lives because they are being bullied in schools and dormitories, what have you, is kind of unfathomable.” holiday issue

cyber scare

“We should promote an atmosphere of trust where kids can feel comfortable about sharing their positive and negative experiences.” Nowadays, mean teens have evolved beyond snickering and playing pranks in the gym showers, hallways, parking lots and lunch rooms. Bathroom stalls are no longer the only billboard of choice for writing profanities, obscenities, insults, and attacks on schoolmates. These days, e-mails, text messages, wall posts on social networking sites, digital images, live chats, forums, instant messaging, streaming videos and the like have become the preferred methods for delivering potentially life-ruining content. Earlier this year, Irish native and 15-year old South Hadley High School student Phoebe Prince also took her life following repeated harassment from her schoolmates, who were attacking her for dating one of the more popular male students. A soda can was thrown at her while she was walking home from school. Her 12-year old sister found Phoebe hanging from a scarf on the staircase. Following her death, crude remarks still continued to appear on her Facebook page. Just this September, 18-year old Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi made headlines after he jumped off the George Washington Bridge. He was said to be repeatedly teased by schoolmates for being gay. The turning point was when his dorm roommate secretly video streamed Tyler's encounter with another male student, thus forcing Tyler to face further public humiliation. A few days later, he posted a suicide message on Facebook and dove to his death on the Hudson River. Because the internet never sleeps, and is as far-reaching as you can imagine, bullying can now occur 24/7, allow content to spread like wildfire from one e-mail, text message, or website to countless others, and live on in the bowels of the World Wide Web for all eternity. This can scar, ruin, and traumatize the victim for life, making it difficult for him or her to recover, and live normally. “The truth is that technology has moved faster than parents’ ability to keep up with it,” former educator Jacquie Ream, said. Ream is also the author of YNK—“You Never Know,” a book that aims to teach today’s youth about the pitfalls of technology. Mary Kay Hoal, the COO of yoursphere.com, a positive place for kids online cautions that, “The Internet is an integral part of all our lives, and the benefits for Internet-savvy kids are boundless, but there can be a very concerning, dark side to our children’s online interactions. We need to eliminate those pressures so our children can reap the benefits of living in a world made smaller by the Internet, and promote an Internet culture that focuses on the wonders of the online world, and not its dangers.” But even before kids learned how to threaten and harass their peers online, they have been victims to different types of bullying, and such hate crimes. In 2008, Jessica Logan hanged herself after an ex-boyfriend sent malicious images of her to his peers, causing the student body to verbally harass her. The same holiday issue

year, Oxnard, California native Lawrence King also fell victim to a hate crime, as he was shot to death by a bully while inside the campus, because he was openly gay. Here in the Philippines, homosexuals and those who appear to be the slightest bit different (whether in terms of appearance, race, family and religious background, or interests), are also targets of bullies, who continue to believe that discrimination is okay, if not a perfectly normal part of growing up. As daunting as the pressing threat of bullying both in the real, and in the cyber worlds may be, parents need only remember the importance of establishing a strong, open relationship with their children. We should promote an atmosphere of trust where kids can feel comfortable about sharing their positive and negative experiences. We should also reinforce the idea of respecting others and their boundaries and beliefs, and at the same time, open our kids' eyes to the harsh consequences of bullying. Overall, we must foster an environment where children can learn from them, share their experiences, and still feel secure that no matter what they confide, we will still be there to support, understand, and protect them accordingly. Parents should take a proactive approach in instilling good values in our children, and aid them in fostering better relationships with others. We must also control what our children see online, and teach them how to positively react to stimulus. We may not be able to control what goes on in school, but we can control what goes on at home, and raise children who are able to practice acceptance, and encourage a safer, more harmonious community to live in. “Parents need to take an active role in preventing bullying from becoming a part of their children’s lives,” Jacquie Ream urges. She adds that technology is merely a means, and that the prevention of bullying still starts at home. “We cannot sit back and blame technology for the crisis facing our kids today. Technology is a tool. There is a human hand and a human mind behind every vicious text message and every texted threat. We need to bring our children a sense of basic core values about their relationships so that they don’t fall down the slippery slope that cell phones and the Internet is paving for them.” For his part, Malcolm Gauld, the president of Hyde Schools, which is a network of prep and charter schools focused on character education and leadership development, sees the need for the participation and cooperation not just of the immediate family. “An honest and positive school and home environment where kids and family members look out for each other is possible. The kids can't do it by themselves. We cannot do it for them. But we can form a partnership with communities and schools that gets it done,” Gauld said. In the U.S., one such partnership is the It Gets Better Project (itgetsbetter.org), established by noted writer and media personality, Dan Savage. It aims to promote the urgent message that life has so much more to offer, and that bullying isn’t the only reality that teenaged kids have to know and fear. bc bcmag.ph { DEC-JAN 2011 } b c PHILIPPINES

rom her home to her business, Zarah Juan is one green queen. Her latest winning venture, Panda Cleaners (which she co-owns with her husband, Christian), has changed the face of the local laundry services industry by offering new and innovative ways to decrease waste, without compromising the quality of service. The proud mompreneur, whose enterprise began with Greenleaf Ecobags, and also expanded to Coco Manila natural products, believes that the secret to her success is striking a good balance between her family and her career—coupled with hard work, dedication, and the ability to create better ideas for the Earth.

52

How did Panda Cleaners start?

How did you think of the concept?

I started making Greenleaf Ecobags back in 2007, during the same time my husband and I wanted his laundry business to also go green. Laundromats produce large amounts of by-products that are not eco-friendly. The solution was to incorporate all the eco-ideas used in other countries to combat the issue of trash. Greenleaf supported Panda Cleaners with reusable canvas bags, biodegradable plastic bags were sourced, banana-based environmental soap, and non-toxic paint for the interiors of all stores were used. With 44 Panda outlets, the by-products produced by one company had suddenly decreased. Panda Cleaners is proud that the response in the market was not only astounding, but also phenomenal. Sales actually increased in stores because customers now had the option to patronize an ecofriendly laundry. In the past six months, there is now a shift to go "green" with other laundry stores, which is great for business and the environment. Panda Cleaners is the pioneer in the green laundry movement, and it hopes to create more eco-ideas as it moves forward. It is so involved in reducing its trash output, that even the lint in all 100 dryers used in its stores will be collected, and will be used as an all-natural paper for its promo posters.

We identified all the aspects to reduce the impact our laundry chain had on the environment. From simply switching to canvas laundry bags made by Greenleaf, the orders for plastic bags decreased, thus creating less trash. Soap that would be harmful to the water system has been eliminated, in favor of banana-based biodegradable soap. We are continuously thinking of creating new and innovative ways in Panda to keep our environment clean.

Your businesses are very eco-friendly. What made you switch to green living?

We wanted to practice green living at home by buying from farmers who don't use chemicals on their produce. We switched to eco-friendly soap, and we conserve energy when possible. After practicing these ideas at home, we thought it was time to introduce the idea with our businesses. Now, our employees are using the same green practices at home. Very rewarding and fulfilling. Of course it has its challenges, but to succeed in both, I have created a harmonious balance for the two. Actually three, including my husband. The perk of owning and running your own business is time. I can spend as much time as I want with my child, and work at the same time without sacrificing my responsibilities. What is your schedule like?

Early morning ritual is first to meditate, then pray, and review plan for the day. Have breakfast with the family, bring my son to school, get ready for work, then start the daily grind. Lunch with my husband, then back to work. I call my child after school to check studies and sports. Have dinner with family, and tuck my child in for bed. If I am restless, I resort to making my homemade soap, which calms my nerves down. After that, I call it a day and head to bed. What has been the highest point in your career as a business woman?

I would have to say when people approach me for business ideas, or for suggestions regarding how I came to be the business person I am. I know I'm doing something right when people say I have inspired them to pursue what they really want in life, because that's the path I took when I started the businesses I have now. How much does one need to prepare for in order to own a franchise?

A good amount, including additional expenses would be about P600,000.00. But money is half of the requirement. One must also be prepared to invest time and dedication in the franchise system. That is the only way one will succeed. What is the biggest challenge in your business that you have holiday issue

faced, and how did you overcome it?

Each step of going green required extensive research and development. It was very difficult in the beginning, but I believe things have solutions that are always in front of you. It’s nice to think out of the box, so ideas are always fresh. How do you strive to achieve a work/life balance?

We all start the day with 24 hours. It’s just how you use your time wisely. This is one valuable lesson I learned from a friend who is very successful. What is your proudest mommy moment?

When my son showed independence in school, sports, and with his peers. It shows already in his actions—how well-rounded he is—also because of the examples instilled by my husband and I. What are the funniest things Basti does?

If making bubbles from his snot isn't funny, then I don't know what is. Gross, yes. Funny, yes. Clean, no. (Laughs) What are your must-haves as a mom?

Sunblock, homemade soap, lip balm, blush, Greenleaf reusable bags, rosary, and prayer book. Aside from environmental awareness, what other important values are you instilling in your child as he grows up?

Respect, love for God, the value of money, perseverance in sports, dedication in academics, and having a positive attitude. What are some easy “green” tips you can give busy moms and dads out there?

Patronize your local green market, always use reusable bags, recycle, enjoy nature with your family, and plant trees. bc bcmag.ph { DEC-JAN 2011 } b c PHILIPPINES

ranchising an international clothing brand is no joke, but Keri Zamora seems to have done it effortlessly. With the successful opening of the first Philippine franchise of the popular Russian fashion and clothing brand, Kira Plastinina, Keri Zamora and her business partner (and sister) Ruby Anna Neri-Coching have proven that hard work indeed pays off. Aside from being a fashion enthusiast-turned-entrepreneur, Keri is also a young mother of three, and wife to the Vice Mayor of San Juan, Francis Zamora. She says that the key to success is having the passion for your work, and the right mindset to believe that you’ll go places you’ve never been before. b c PHILIPPINES { DEC-JAN 2011 } bcmag.ph

How does it feel to have your own business, and be a mother of three at the same time?

I feel truly blessed to have been given this opportunity to do what I love—working in the fashion business—and at the same time be able to spend time with my children and husband. Sometimes, it gets tiring, but I wouldn’t change a thing. How did you get into the fashion business?

I’ve always been interested in fashion ever since I was little. I think I’ve inherited the love for it from my mom. I did some modeling back in college, took fashion courses at Parson’s, worked as a personal shopper, stylist, and image consultant, then finally brought in a retail franchise. What made you choose Kira Plastinina from all the clothing brands to bring to the Philippines?

I’ve read about Kira in Teen Vogue then I chanced upon her shop in L.A. I really liked the vibe of her store. It was young, hip, and fresh, with very unique designs. What was it like meeting Kira Plastinina herself? holiday issue

I was actually nervous. She’s more mature than her age—she’s 18—but she and her father were very gracious and humble. They are quite admirable.

something—be it a toy, clothing, or shoes—that catches her eye, which she really, really wants.

How much capital, time, and work must one be ready for in order to franchise a clothing line?

Francis started out as a City Councilor in 2007. Through the years, I’ve learned to adjust to his busy schedule. He always makes time for the family, so it makes things easier. He is very hands-on with the kids, which I totally appreciate. He balances things quite well.

It took us a total of 10 months to build our first store. Of course, you need to be ready with your investment. Do your research, find staff who believe in the brand, and go through proper training. What has been a major challenge for you in the business and how did you overcome it?

There wasn’t any huge challenge for us, except for brand awareness, since Kira Plastinina is generally a young brand, compared to its competitors. Surprisingly, there are a lot of young fashionistas who know about the brand from magazines and Internet sites. And stylists often drop by the stores for pull-outs. What is the secret behind your success?

Honestly, I’ve felt successful when we opened our first store. I had never worked so hard in my life, and I continue to do so because I’m really enjoying all this. In spite of the hardships, I get most excited when the new arrivals come. You really have to like what you do, and believe in yourself. Any advice for young parents who also aspire to launch their own business?

Study your market, research on the brand, then go for it. Have a mindset that this venture is for the long run, just like a marriage. How has your entrepreneurial skills helped in raising your children?

They know that we work hard to be able to get the things that they like. We still try to explain to them that they should buy things they really like, and will take care of. My daughter, Amanda, often leaves the mall empty-handed unless there’s holiday issue

How is it like being married to a politician?

What is your favorite bonding place and time with the family?

At home, with the whole family in the room, watching cartoons, or playing games on the kids’ iPads. Or at the dining table, hearing their stories at school. What are the funniest things your kids do?

My daughter Amanda dances ballet, ice skates, and plays the piano, but she also raps and dances hip-hop out of nowhere. My 5-year old son Rocco loves cars so much that he sometimes spends the afternoon going to car showrooms. Thankfully, the salespeople know him already, and allow him to check the inside and outside of the cars. My youngest son, Nikita, who is 5 months, has just learned to flip over by himself—it’s just adorable. What is your proudest mommy moment?

I’m a proud momma from the littlest to the biggest achievement. I’m very proud of my daughter for being able to get really high grades with her busy schedule, and with her ice-skating competitions and ballet recitals. Rocco knows more car models than his dad, he is very articulate. And with Nikita, his being able to flip over and finish his cereal, for now. What are your must-haves as a mom?

A cell phone to keep track of them, hand sanitizers or wipes to keep their hands clean, tissue paper, their books, iPads, or DVD players to keep them from boredom. bc bcmag.ph { DEC-JAN 2011 } b c PHILIPPINES

he's one hardworking momma who rules in the kitchen, and gets to maintain a well-managed household while she’s at it. Meet Pia Kasilag, once a flight attendant with a knack for cooking, which eventually led to her and her brother cofounding Pito and Mita (short for Papito and Mamita)—a homey restaurant named after the siblings’ term of endearment for their parents. The colorful interior is designed by Pia’s mom, Paching de la Fuente, who is the niece of our National Artist for Fashion Design, Ramon Valera. Located on 176 Aguirre St. in BF Paranaque—we dare say that this could be the next big resto to hail from the south. Serving Delicious (note the capital D) Mediterranean cuisine inspired by the cultures of Spain, Italy, France, and Greece, some must-trys are the parmesan-crusted baked fish, eggplant lasagna, and roast pork, which will leave you craving for more. This dining establishment is Pia's fourth baby—only after her three trusted gourmands, of course—Billie, Noelle, and Sergio.

How does it feel to have started your own business despite being a busy mommy of three?

It was actually too overwhelming for me in the beginning. Starting a restaurant business demands too much of my time, most especially since I’m on the operations side. I have my hands full with my three kids, not to mention running our household as well. Since they are all still very young, they all require full attention. However, I’ve already gotten used to my routine and have adjusted to my daily schedule. It feels very fulfilling to be running this type of business, and at the same time, I get to take care of my little angels. What is your schedule like?

school. After that, I bring my younger daughter and baby boy back to the house, then I head to the restaurant. However, when I need to buy some requests from the restaurant, I purchase them first. We open at 11 for lunch, then close at 2 pm. Then I go out again to shop for more ingredients and stuff, or go home for a while to check on my kids. I go back to the restaurant at 5 pm for the dinner rush from 6 to 10 pm. I get home around midnight, then I check on my daughter’s homework and take care of my 7-month old baby boy during the night, since he is still nursing. Mondays are my rest/errand/day with the kids. On a personal note, what are your favorite beauty products?

I apply eyeliner and lipstick daily. I’m not very particular with the brands of cosmetics or hair products that I use. However, when I purchase products, I ensure that I buy hypoallergenic ones. What’s your clothing style?

Very simple and casual. Sometimes the simpler one’s clothing is, the more elegant and sophisticated it looks. It really depends on how one carries herself, and how neat and clean she is—from her hair and face, down to her feet and shoes. However, when the occasion calls for it, like weddings or formals affairs, I dress up. Nothing too flashy nor too sexy though. What recipes do your children and husband enjoy the most?

The favorite of my kids is the pasta carbonara, since they like white sauce. My husband on the other hand, likes my crunchy tokwa’t baboy and crispy sisig because he likes pork, and enjoys Filipino food. Is it true that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach?

I think in today’s times where women have to work as well, this phrase does not hold true for everyone. Unlike in the past, men holiday issue

don’t include this criteria anymore when they look for a partner in life. If their wives can cook, well, I guess it’s just a bonus. Food ingredient you must have in your kitchen?

Olive oil, parmesan cheese, butter, different kinds of cheeses, and many more. Chef you’d someday like to cook for you and have dinner with?

Nobody in particular, because I’m not difficult to please when it comes to food. I enjoy eating simple food—in fact, my favorite is fried chicken! (Laughs) My parents and siblings tease me all the time when we eat out, because they say that they already know what I’m going to order for my meal. What is your proudest mommy moment?

I have three—they are of course when I delivered my three little angels! What makes motherhood beautiful?

A lot of things. What makes it most beautiful for me is the feeling of fulfillment, which is very difficult to explain. Maybe it’s brought about by the sacrifices that come with motherhood. We are sometimes forced to do things that we do not really like— whether we give up something material, or the time or rest for ourselves—just to give our children the proper care and attention that they need. It’s the feeling of unselfishness, because we do not ask for anything in return. Being needed and appreciated is so gratifying. You see and feel it because children are very sincere, and they don’t lie with their feelings. When they hug and kiss you, and say, “I love you, Mom,” you already know that you’ve been a very good mother to them—then you just forget all those “sacrifices” you made. bc bcmag.ph { DEC-JAN 2011 } b c PHILIPPINES

“Sorry the house is such a mess!” Daphne Oseña-Paez repeatedly apologizes with that captivating smile that helped launch her into today’s poster girl for successful motherhood combined with a flourishing career. In our view their home is hardly in disarray, and you can tell that theirs is a house lived-in—a place you’d like to be invited to stay at if you were visiting from out of town, because both the people and the dwelling are homey and comforting. This shoot was actually pushed back a bit due to the family’s threepeat bout with a sickness that all of her endearing daughters were down with. But all’s well now, and the lovely ladies of the house are in top shape. Patrick Paez, looking every bit the esteemed reporter that he is, says a quick hello and runs out to pick up extra food. He rarely makes an appearance in photo shoots—and Daphne mentioned that they didn’t even have “posed” wedding photos—so this is a special one. Maybe

even a first for a glossy. Daphne made her homecoming back to the Philippines after growing up in Canada when she was assigned to an urban and environmental planning project. An unexpected entry into the media world through broadcasting became a blessing, as she has since built a solid career with the help of a man who would eventually become her husband in 2002, and the father of her children. That man is the aforementioned journalist, producer, and KBP and Star Award winner Patrick Paez, who taught her the ropes. Daphne and Patrick wed in Batulao, Batangas—and as they say, the rest is history—some accounts of which you can find in her blog with a cult-ish readership, Daphne’s Diary. She is presently involved in the production of a beddings line called Linens Direct, and launched her handcrafted furniture line recently, which is totally up her design alley.

Followers of this Urban Zone host may also be familiar with her jewelry line in Accessory Lab, which includes intricate pieces inspired by classical forms, such as religious figures. You would think this mom’s got a full plate, but she was also appointed UNICEF’s Special Advocate for Children, campaigning for the promotion of exclusive breastfeeding of babies for the first six months of life. She continues to help deliver the foundation’s primary focus on health services for pregnant mothers, which in effect, helps create stronger babies. From breastfeeding advocate to UNICEF ambassadress, lifestyle host, designer, loving wife, to dedicated mother—Daphne is teaching the world how to eat, pray, and love in her own time and sense. Witness our enjoyable soiree that reveals how the Paezs find perfect balance in their universe, in a story set in their perfect, “rickety” dwelling.

Our family comes first, even if it means losing jobs. We treasure everything from waking up with the kids jumping into our bed, to long breakfasts, bike rides together, or even going to the market. What are your comfort meals?

Fried chicken and rice. Spaghetti, lasagna... Who is the best cook in your household?

No one. But when I do make the effort, then it would be me. We don’t have a real cook. Our main helper just knows the basics, and when I’m not looking all she cooks is fried fish—which my kids love—and sautéed vegetables. I try really hard to organize a weekly menu, but as any working mom will tell you, it’s not easy. It’s a bit of a production logistically. Do you have a signature dish?

Risotto is the only thing I’ve mastered. I follow Jamie Oliver’s recipe. Everything is from scratch. I’ve learned to deviate a bit and add my own ingredients with whatever’s currently in the fridge. What are the kids’ favorite lunch box meals?

Chicken nuggets, which we make from scratch. I buy chicken breast fillet, and we cut them up into smaller sizes, then we use tempura crumbs as coating. What are your favorite restaurants and types of food and drink?

For non-occasions with the kids, we stick to the familiar and tested—like Cibo and Pancake House—or any diner type chains. Despite my being exposed to new restaurants because of my job, we

www.bcmag.ph

always go back to favorites when Patrick and I go out—like Chelsea, L’Opera. When we want to make a real effort, we go to Antonio’s. Speaking of preferred “drinks,” how did you get started into breastfeeding?

I didn’t think twice about it. I just assumed it was part of pregnancy and giving birth. When I was pregnant with my first daughter, Sophia, I developed a blood clot in my uterus. I remained on bed rest for two months. I had a lot of time to read up on breastfeeding, and because of the difficult pregnancy and the fact that she survived— she’s a miracle baby—I knew I wanted to give her the best start. I never once considered giving her formula. I didn’t even introduce the bottle (of expressed breast milk) until six weeks after. I breastfed all my daughters exclusively for the first six months—meaning no water, no supplements, no baby food, nor formula. I only introduced solids after six months. Then I continued to breast feed ‘til 12 months. How do you stay so slim, even after having three daughters?

I’m not. It’s all an illusion. I have a small frame and small bones. I look slim, but I am aware of my body fat percentage, and I’m doing something about that. I used to take one-on-one sessions of Stott Pilates for toning, flexibility, and to strengthen my core and back. I did it for one year. Now I’m doing Barre3 at The Spa. It’s a combination of yoga, Pilates, and ballet. Because it’s a group session, it costs a lot less than Stott Pilates. I really love it. DEC-JAN 2011 philippines

-PRAYWhat was your biggest dream as a child?

Like most little girls, I would dream that I was a princess. Then all I really wanted to be was to be exactly like my mom—pretty, glamorous, and strong. She was a flight attendant in the ‘60s, before she got married. One day she said, “No, you should be better than me.” I didn’t know what that meant. Then one day I changed my “ambition”—to be an architect. How’s your relationship like with your parents?

Beautiful. Every single day with them counts as a blessing. Unfortunately, my whole family lives in Toronto. I’m the only one who moved out after University and “saw the world,” which eventually led me back to the Philippines. My dad is very techy. He follows me on Twitter, and both of them are on Facebook. We do FaceTime via the iPhone 4 regularly. I love the company of my parents. We get along now as friends. My mother makes me laugh. We love chismis, and we are so alike in many ways. My dad is my rock. There are only two people who can calm me down and make me feel secure—my Dad and Patrick. I feel very lucky that my siblings and I are capable of making our parents feel comfortable and spoiled. We enjoy showering them with little treats. I think that’s a special gift—when kids can honor their parents while they are still here. When did you realize you had a passion for the arts, specifically architecture?

I’ve always been artistically-inclined. Even in elementary, I was the class artist. My neighbor would ask me to do her drawing homework for her. In high school, I excelled in most of my classes—from math to geography, to visual arts. I won a scholarship after my high school graduation, and I got into the best university for fine arts, but I chose to go to the University of Toronto and pursue Urban Studies and Fine Art History. My dad didn’t want me to be a “starving artist.” I studied art formally though, all genres. My parents still have my oil paintings at home. In high school, I developed a love for architecture and the city. I think it had a lot to do with being in Toronto, seeing how efficient everything was. I was aware of the master plan for Toronto, and I was intrigued by that. In high school, I thought I wanted to be an architect. I didn’t even try to get into Architecture school because I didn’t get my calculus credit from high school. In reality, I didn’t have a vision of how I would build a building. Architecture to me is the most perfect discipline—it has art, math and science, and despite all the formality and engineering, it’ll always boil down to the human level—buildings must be livable and functional. What types of art and architecture move you?

It is hard to talk about art in an interview. It’s an emotional thing. I appreciate all forms and styles from all periods. This is because of my formal training. I love Greek and Roman art, the Gothic period, Rennaissance, Pre-Rafaelites, Expressionism. In terms of architecture, I love to look up and marvel at buildings, but very few here move me. So when I am in New York City, or back in Toronto, I try to maximize. One space that I found really poetic was Frank Gehry’s reworking of the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto. Favorite artists?

Henri Matisse, Frida Kahlo, and I am stalking Julian Schnabel. My blog has a few entries on him. I just know that one day I will meet him. Locally, I love the art of Popo San Pascual, Olan Ventura, and Pacquing. The three of them have nothing in common, but I have their work. What led you to pursue designing jewelry and furniture?

I make jewelry. But I’m far from calling myself a jewelry designer. I sketch what I want, but it’s not like I reinvent the wheel every time I do a charm necklace. Same with the furniture. I like classical www.bcmag.ph

form—sometimes borderline Baroque—for both the jewelry and furniture. They both represent the old world, where everything was handcrafted. For the furniture, I have a design team that puts my vision and concepts into concrete plans. Lots of carving, but I want my pieces to be light and adaptable to modern/contemporary times, so I keep the finish a bit distressed. What inspires you?

When I am surrounded by beautiful things, and I get to think of the creativity that went into making those things. My daughters are my muses. I make things for them. Their names represent flowers— Sophia Rose, Lily Paloma, and Stella Margarita (“Margarita” means “Daisy”). I love anything that’s handmade. What reaffirms your belief in God?

When I see my three beautiful and healthy children. I am constantly reminded of the power and grace of God. That only He can create these beautiful, perfect miracles, in His own time. Best gifts you’ve ever received?

I can’t say. But I’m a sucker for corporate giveaways—I love umbrellas, pens, flash drives, and little things that bear corporate logos. Am I weird? (Laughs) Haha! Describe your journey into hosting and television.

I got into TV because of connections, but once I got my foot in the door, it was sink or swim. I am proud to say I did everything on my own—no manager, backer, publicist, nor handler. I was a reporter for a couple of years. I wasn’t interested in the news, but I was hooked on the language of broadcasting. Patrick taught me everything I know about writing and producing for TV. After F ended its 7-year run, I knew I wasn’t done yet. But I didn’t want to be just a TV host. I wanted to be part of the creative process, and to have a stake in the show. That’s why I made Urban Zone and brought it to Bayan Productions. Now we are completely independent, which also has its pros and cons. But so far I am loving everything about UZ. I’m so proud of it. What was it like growing up in Canada?

It’s the most perfect place, and I can say that with technical data to support me. I loved growing up there. Everything was available as long as you wanted it. I worked hard in high school and university—I took on leadership roles and really grew more confident and assertive. I liked being in a place where I was completely on my own—not judged for who my parents were, nor what they did. Everyone was equal. When I was in elementary in Manila, I was very shy and uninvolved. When I got to Toronto, I developed a consciousness for civic issues—hence urban planning. I thrived there. I got my dream job right after graduating university. There was no reason for me to leave. How did you make the ultimate decision to settle in the Philippines?

I moved here because of work. I was Project Manager of an urban and environmental planning project in Guimaras, funded by Canada. It was my dream job, having graduated with urban studies and art history. After one year, I got offered a job as a local reporter. I was only supposed to do it for one year—to try, get experience, to take a break from my very academic field. Before the year ended, I met Patrick. We were friends for a year, then we dated. He found ways to make sure I would never leave the station, and ultimately, the Philippines. He taught me how to produce stories and be a journalist. It reached a point of no return, when he and I created the hit show F. Five years into dating, we finally got married. So the real reason I decided to stay here was Patrick. DEC-JAN 2011 philippines

81

How has Patrick contributed to your development as a person?

When I met Patrick, he was executive producer of an award-winning news and current affairs show. I was in awe of his work. I wasn’t aware that he had apparently been one of the network’s ace reporters. When I was just starting out as a reporter, he gave me advice, then trained me with writing and producing. He told me not to try too hard—to simply tell the story, get straight to the point, and make an impact fast. He taught me that stories have to have high and low points, and at least two details that stand out for people to talk about the next day. We were coming from opposite sides of the spectrum, in terms of politics, educational background, and style. We clashed a bit, but we were able to turn the conflict into creative jujus. The result was “Video Postcards,” a short vignette—simple narrations of my views on art, tourism, events, culture—the softer side of news. This started my focus on the lifestyle genre. I was very impatient. After all, I left Canada and my Urban Planning profession for broadcasting. But [Patrick] told me to be patient. He always knew that I would be in the industry for the long term—that I may not be the flavor of the month ever—but that I will build “something” in a few years. I always say that Patrick made my dreams come true, and now I’m completely independent. He runs a department in another network, and I’m producing Urban Zone. I’ve built the brand of UZ and Daphne. He offers advice, but most of the time, he says he just watches and waits for my surprises. With everything, I still try to get his approval. His support is important to me, even if it means we have to clash along the way. It’s healthy. We’re both very creative and passionate people. He loves to see me thrive in my work, and I love to see him thrive in his. He’s won so many awards, but he remains very humble. You won’t hear him even mention it. How do you both nurture your relationship as husband and wife?

Sounds cliché, but it’s true. Our family comes first, even if it means losing jobs. I have more flexibility in my job. He’s in the corporate side, so he has to play by the rules. Our weekends are sacred. We treasure everything from waking up with the kids jumping into our bed, to long breakfasts, bike rides together, or even going to the market. It helps that neither of us has an active social life. We’re too tired to do the night scene. Our friends live in our village—his childhood friends—so we just enjoy low key parties at home. I get invited to a lot of events—which

82

bc

DEC-JAN 2011 philippines

I consider work. So even for that, we’ve made a “policy” that we separate his work from my work, and vice versa. He doesn’t come to the events I go to—unless it’s a really important one. I have a self-imposed quota, I only go to two events a month. I need to be home to tuck the kids into bed. We also have this thing about not making everything about the kids. We make sure we have alone-time regularly. How do you split parenting duties?

In the beginning, I did most of the parenting, it seemed. I was breastfeeding each kid, giving her a bath and doing everything. But now that the kids are bigger—Sophia 7, Lily 4, Stella 1—I’m able to “delegate” the duties. (Laughs) Patrick takes Soph and Lily for bike rides or walks in the park, while I do baby stuff with Stella. Most of the time though, we are always together as a family, and we just wing it. What are the most important values you are teaching your kids?

Kindness, the value of hard work, and creativity. What milestones have your girls achieved at their tender ages?

Sophia’s talent in art recently got discovered—again. She draws cute little doll figures, and my friend who owns a lamp manufacturing company in China asked my permission to use Soph’s drawings as a design for their kiddie lamp line. I was in tears. My baby is a designer! And she’s only 7. Lily is also a natural artist. I can spot her talent—it’s more mad and wild. She draws aliens and space ships, but she distinguishes female aliens by putting them in ball skirts and giving them lashes. Stella is so active. She dances to any music, but her best moves are to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies.” She goes to Gymboree classes like her bigger sisters did, and she is so agile. Funniest things your kids do?

Right now, Stella’s dancing keeps us laughing. Her moves are awesome. Thank goodness for cameras in phones and the Flip, it’s been easy to document everything. I always end up using them as my subjects in my blog. I can’t help it. They are my real world. Sophia’s vocabulary is pretty good for her age, so the things she says make us laugh. The other day I asked her to do something and she said, “I don’t think that’s an option, Mommy.” What? Lily is truly the clown of the family. She’s got an active fan club going among my friends. She knows how to turn on her charm whenever she wants.

Your girls recently got HFMD. Are there still lessons learned after these experiences?

That no matter how hard you try to keep them clean and healthy, there’s no way you can escape viral infections, if they are exposed to people who are sick. I am crazy about washing of hands. It’s actually a UNICEF campaign. Parents, teachers, please make it a habit for your children to wash their hands with soap and water. We sing “Happy Birthday Hands” while doing it. Parents and teachers should be vigilant about viruses at school, even the common cough and cold. Keep your kids at home if they’ve got a bug. Surely we learned something from the A-H1N1 scare? Yes, we have. On a lighter note, what about Patrick makes you laugh?

He looks so serious to others, I’m sure. And he is…on the intense side. Because he knows so much. He’s always reading, but despite his intelligence, he makes the funniest mistakes. He’s awkward, and he knows it. I find it so charming to this day. Tell us about his toy collections.

My enemies, you mean? The over 200 G.I. Joe action figures? He’s collected them in a span of 15 years. He loves reading about wars and battles. Pretty ironic for me, because I grew up in a military air base. They were getting messy, then he built a huge shelf in one side of the guest room. They’ve all got a home. My girls borrow the G.I. Joes sometimes—as boyfriends of Barbie. They use the tank as their vehicle. Now, he collects bicycles. He’s got four—a KawayanTech bike, two fixies, and a foldie, which he got for me, Bike Friday by Tikit, but I haven’t used it. If you had an alternate universe, what would it look like?

Exactly like this, except we would have a big yard where the kids would be running around freely. Seriously though, this is the life I’ve always wanted for myself. I’m living the dream—in an imperfect rickety old house—and I love it. Everyday, I am so grateful to God for making my dreams and wishes come true. Nothing about work. Just a good and loving husband, healthy, happy children, and home bustling with creative activity and little footsteps. The style part is a bonus. bc www.bcmag.ph

Atty. Felipe Lapus Gozon comes out to his living room to greet our team wearing a floral shirt, black pants, and his black, comfy house slippers. I’m not used to seeing him in something other than a barong, because it’s been more than five years since I last saw him at his office wearing one. He was then coincidentally telling my husband and I about wanting to build his dream home for his family. Today, he looks even younger, so the treadmill and daily morning swims with the grandkids are doing him great. What I love about this TV giant is that he makes you feel like no time has passed, and you can pick up where you left off with the jokes and stories. But don’t be fooled by the playfulness and that smile that he so easily wears—this man is as badass in the business world as they come. Fast track to today, and we are photographing his family inside the aforementioned pet project that came into full fruition. This

glass and wooden address is one of the fruits of his labors—it is massive, boasting of three-levels, and is slated on a 2,500sqm lot in North Forbes. Their family friend, Architect Roger Villarosa, designed this edifice with the entire family— especially the eldest daughter, Annette—chipping in with their ideas. Not that I expected any less of a palatial dwelling from the man who is at the helm of GMA, the Philippines’ current top-rating television network. However, these quarters have a different and interesting story to it, because it houses all the three Gozon children—two svelte and lovely daughters, Annette and Maritess—a lawyer and doctor respectively, who now have their own families. The middle child is another handsome counsel besides being the only son, Philip, who is armed with a Master’s Degree from Harvard, and is still single (also reportedly a hit with the ladies).

We were beckoned to come in at 11 AM because lunch would be served. They prepared a Filipino feast, which is always a welcome treat for us “balikbayans,” especially since we haven’t been back to Manila in half a decade. From the suha, adobo, leche flan, different kinds of grilled fish, kare-kare, and naturally, to an assortment of sodas (what Pinoy meal isn’t completed by some fizzy or sweet drink?)—it hit the spot. This midday gastronomic fare somehow reminded me of their kin: low-key, comforting, yet full of flavor. FLG built this dwelling primarily to make sure all his children remain in the same domicile, since their previous one was not big enough to house everyone. In order to coax them into this mutually-beneficial residential arrangement, he added that aside from having a grandparent’s touch in their lives, the Gozon kids live worry and rent-free—with even their utility and grocery bills covered. I pray that when my own daughters have their own brood that they will choose to live with my husband and me

as well. It is no small feat to have a nurturing and luxurious environment that affords this kind of camaraderie among parents and children. The ‘queen’ of the abode, the charming and beautiful Tessie Gozon, has made being a SAHM so covetable, if only to produce such academically-excellent children, which she credits to her husband’s genetics and her tutoring—while teaching them the value of education in their earlier school years. FLG salutes his other half for the success of their 40-year marriage, and for their children’s wonderful upbringing. “From the very start, it was very clear to my wife that her role as a wife and mother to our three children would come first. She is very hands-on. I appreciate that through all the times that I was busy with work, I was confident that our children were in very good hands.” Their eldest daughter is most like FLG, the Mrs. states. The father and daughter are both lawyers by profession (Annette also carries a Master’s Degree from www.bcmag.ph

Harvard like her younger bro), and yet always see to it that they spend time with their loved ones. The GMA Films President and her husband, Lito Abrogar, are parents to an 11-year old girl named Anja (whose school policy does not permit students to join in photo shoots, hence her absence), and an irresistible and cool, faux hawked, 6-year old son, Andy. Mrs. Gozon thinks that their youngest daughter, Maritess, is most like her. The latter is postponing her medical residency to help her husband, Blas Viterbo, care for their two boys, Raffy, who is cute and delightful at 4, and Basti, a scrumptious, darling 20-month old, who’s still nursing from his mom. While having lunch at their formal dining room (there is a breakfast table that FLG prefers in the mornings for its relaxing view of the front garden and fountain, which he helped design), Annette joins our group, together with her mom. I compliment their beautiful home. FLG claims that he was lucky to have been able to buy this lot because it was not available in the market quite some time, and was quite a steal for its rare selling price in one of the country’s most exclusive neighborhoods. There are two water fountains: one by the front gate, and a koi pond under the stairs. They made sure that there is a perfect balance of wind and water—the main elements of the Feng Shui aesthetic. A Jacuzzi sits outdoors, out back by the large garden, along with two comfy swings. When asked how he is like as a father, FLG relates that his kids used to describe him as “king.” “I do not know if it was out of respect, love, or fear. Kidding aside, I was, and still am, very fair to all of them. I provide for their needs without spoiling them.” However, it’s an entirely different ballgame when it comes to the little ones. The fondness for his third generation Gozons is expected, not only because they are all too-adorable—especially today when they are wearing mini-suits. Mrs. Gozon puts it simply: “Show me a grandparent who does not spoil his or her grandchildren.” FLG admits to both himself and his wife caving in to whatever their favorite little people want, while Mrs. Gozon “tries to make them aware of how far they can go.” With energetic child’s play and fast, light footsteps that are music to the household, FLG claims that it’s “funny that my grandkids prefer me over their grandmother, although I think Tessie will beg to disagree.” He also adds that they are the only people not at all intimidated by him. This brought me to think about this tycoon’s own childhood. He relates that, “I was a very mischievous and energetic child. In fact, I was constantly testing my boundaries. This daring attitude of mine led to several accidents that almost cost me my life. Once, I collided with a jeepney while Tessie: Plum sheer dress by francis libiran, model’s own

crossing the street to fetch a baseball. Another time, I almost drowned in the Malabon River after finding myself trapped in a salambao (bamboo fishing vessel). I still have scars as testament to the rambunctiousness of my youth.” Carolina Lapus Gozon, their grand dame, so to speak, whose beloved orchids FLG has taken over responsibility for, has played the greatest influence into shaping him into the man he is today. He states that, “The richness of her life is testament to 96 years of unwavering faith in God and formidable strength of character. Although now confined to a wheelchair, she still serves as inspiration and motivation to all her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.” We met the eldest female Gozon, who also resides with them (and has a lovely view of the pool from her room) while she was being wheeled into the van which has a pneumatic lift from the trunk area. FLG is all-praises when it comes to his folks. “My parents granted me and each of my siblings with the best education they could possibly provide. Also, through the lives they led, they demonstrated the importance of honesty, integrity, and hard work.” It was also because of looking up to his father and role model, Benjamin Gozon, that he decided to enter the field of Law. “Even at an early

90

age, people close to me already seemed to know that I was destined to be a lawyer. They say I was very inquisitive and argumentative, even as a little boy.” On this particular day, FLG’s mom left to visit one of her other children who resides in Urdaneta. One of my co-workers overheard her chuckle in the van, which leaves me personally pleased because I aspire to live a long and laughter-filled life such as hers. At one point, we ask to take a photo of the eldest Gozon couple outside their front door, which at this time of year is flanked by a snowman and more holiday decor. We cajole them to share a kiss under imaginary mistletoe, but they just laughed it off. This is the kind of togetherness that doesn’t need PDA. It reaffirms the tight relationship that this kin shares with each member—explaining why a taxidermist preserved their beloved dog who passed away, who is now “watching” over them from under the piano on the second floor. As a major pooch-lover myself (we have a 10-year old Labrador, and a 9-month old Golden), this kind of attachment completely makes sense. It is admirable how strong this marital union is, one that began when Mrs. Gozon was barely 16, and FLG at 18 years of age. She declares that, “Henry was my first www.bcmag.ph

love. We were both students then at U.P. I was a freshman student taking up BS Chemistry, and he was a sophomore on his way to the College of Law. According to him, he used to see me waiting for the car to fetch me at the Liberal Arts building stairs. He looked for a friend who knew me, and asked this friend to introduce him to me.” On the flip side, I questioned FLG about his love for riding motorcycles, which relates to his wife’s story. “Do you know that I used a scooter in order to ‘force’ Tessie into being my girlfriend? That was summertime in Baguio in the late ‘50s. I asked her to ride the scooter with me, and told her I will not let her off until she agreed to be my girlfriend. It worked!” What FLG loves most about his wife is, “The way that she tempers me. Our personalities are vastly different, but it is this distinction that gives stability to our marriage…I am also confident that she loves me for who I am, and not for what I have become. She married me not knowing what the future held in store for us.” Mrs. Gozon comments that, “We had many ups and downs in a relationship that lasted for 11 years before we got married in 1969. But during our last reconciliation, I guess we decided that what probably started as “puppy love” had developed into the real thing, and that we were really meant for each other. We complement each other.” On the secret to both a blissful marriage and winning career, FLG says that he can’t think of any. “I just have the philosophy that in whatever you do, you really have to give 100% of yourself, nothing less. The thought that my family, and the many people who work in the Network—as well as the investors—depend on me, keeps me going.” Prodded about his leadership formula, he believes that, “I was able to effectively communicate our objectives. I was able to show them my sincerity. I was hands-on, transparent, honest, and fair in my dealings with them; and I do what I say, and say what I do.” Whether he feels any pressure to

surpass the mountainous standards set for GMA, he feels that, “In order to succeed in this life, you always have to put pressure on yourself to always do better. My inherent competitive spirit and desire to succeed does not permit me to be complacent.” With a marriage that she describes as “strong, challenging, and blessed,” Mrs. Gozon adds that there is nothing she wouldn’t sacrifice for her family. Her biggest challenge as a parent was when Maritess, who was then in her first year proper at the U.P. College of Medicine, was diagnosed with lupus—a troubling disease that involves the immune system. “I cried a lot during this episode in my life. Fortunately, and with a lot of prayers, the disease has been in remission, and our daughter, who is now a doctor, knows more or less how to manage her condition and prevent relapses,” recalls Mrs. Gozon. On a lighter note, the Gozon couple bowl with three other couples every weekend in order to unwind. This has been a ritual among their group for close to 30 years. They also go on a vacation at least once a year with the whole shebang (grandkids and nannies included). A recent one was a trip to Europe where they enjoyed a 3-bedroom suite—complete with a living room and piano—onboard a cruise ship. He says it was more cost-efficient to be in the suite than to be roomed separately. I guesss he also couldn’t bear to be too separated from his family. There is also a chess table in the GMA Chairman’s office where he “plays when the pressure of work gets too much, or the papers I have to read become too voluminous.” Speaking of documents to examine, it was through this fortuity that they found their eldest daughter’s passion for films. Annette pored through a movie script a little tooquickly for someone who wasn’t in the business, and was ready with her notes and comments thereafter. Her father www.bcmag.ph

“Do you know that I used a scooter in order to ‘force’ Tessie into being my girlfriend? That was summertime in Baguio in the late ‘50s. I asked her to ride the scooter with me, and told her I will not let her off until she agreed to be my girlfriend. It worked!” took this as a definite sign of Annette’s passion for the cinematic art, which she now presides over in her corporate role. There is one other gift FLG found out that a parent could freely give: Allow your children to do what they love. On the topic of presents, one such surprise was a recent family purchase of a Porsche sports car for FLG, which he has wished for all his life. He fondly states that he only had two questions: why did it take his family so long? And why now, when he can’t fit in that car anymore? We all crack-up, and he continues to share the story of how those spankin’ wheels, which was presented to him complete with a ribbon, was eventually exchanged for a more spacious sedan, a Panamera—still a Porsche, nonetheless. Speaking of vehicles, Phillip left their house shortly after the shoot, and was chauffeured to a physical therapy session due to a torn ACL from playing basketball. He chatted with us for a bit, and it is noteworthy that this is the man in the family that will continue the surname— and with his quiet, confident demeanor—seems to be just the gentleman for the job. As their family obviously enjoys a providential life, there are only a few more things that the Gozons could want for. FLG is happy and content, and only wishes to “perhaps make the TV and radio stations of GMA Network achieve the highest-rating nationwide, to make its international TV station the most-watched station by Filipinos abroad, for all my children to succeed in what they do, and to live the rest of my life happy, and without any major illness.” Mrs. Gozon shares that, “I wish that we, as a family, would stay as happy and as close-knit as we are now. I wish Henry and I would live long enough to see our children succeed in their endeavors, to enjoy our present and future grandchildren, and see them grow into responsible adults.” bc

massive rain cloud passed Manila on the day we visited one of the most fascinating modern homes, but the downpour didn't stop us from admiring this handsome structure from inside and out. On the contrary, the showers served as a perfect backdrop for this shoot, adding a cooler and fuzzier feeling once we stepped into the awe-inspiring house. Welcoming us into their incredibly stylish home in Bel-Air (literally set a stone’s throw from the Powerplant Mall) is one of the Philippines' most admired athletes, Felix Barrientos, who is regarded as our country’s best tennis player—ever. His stellar career included a record of as much as 26 wins in his 1984 to 1993 run in the Davis Cup tournament. In 1991, he defeated Japan and China for a spot in the World Group, and subsequently went on to win a number of gold medals at the Southeast Asia Games. Now a successful private banker based in Singapore, Felix admits that it was his training as an athlete that prepared him for the competitive world of banking. Despite his enviable career in sports, he knew his reign on the courts won’t be forever—which was why he entered Louisiana State University on a tennis scholarship. He went on to study at the Ateneo Graduate School to earn a master’s degree in business administration, graduating in 1999. Since then, he has worked with multinational banking corporations, and built a strong career in the banking industry. Armed with a glass of red, the proud father of two showed us around his lavish home, which features a wide living area with a seemingly endless ceiling. It was a perfect scene straight out of the movies, as the kids bounced down the stairs to join

their father in the living room. The glow in Felix's face as he saw his handsome little hijos matched the golden radiance of the house lights. The serenity in their faces, and the silent comfort that all is well, was heartwarming. The family that lives in this neat home is one that beams with genuine adoration for each other. The lady of the house is equally beautiful, even as she rushed home from a meeting for the shoot. Dressed in her classy business outfit, Regina Jacinto-Barrientos was an image of charm and grace. The proud wife and mother jokingly tells us that their elegant abode is called “Aman-pola,” a play on their street name alluding to Amanpulo, because they love having guests over—and vice versa, surely. As we shared homemade bites in their warm, crimson kitchen, we also noted how happy their domestic staff are, whom Reggie describes as their extended family. As one-third of PJS Law’s partners, Reggie has a very impressive legal background. Having worked with organizations like the Institute of Corporate Directors, the Department of Energy, and various arms of the Philippine government, one would think that her career rivals that of her husband’s. But despite the massive success of both Reggie and Felix in their respective chosen fields, one can observe how they put their values ahead of them in everything they do. From raising their two good-natured and adorable boys, to making their home a great place for family and friends to enjoy, the Barrientoses are a brood worth admiring. www.bcmag.ph

“Motherhood is a gift. What makes it great is the miracle of loving with all your heart for your first born, and replicating the same miracle for the next child. Then to realize that your love for your children have not taken away from existing love, making you capable of loving your husband with the same intensity as your wedding day.”

What’s a typical week like with your family? Felix: Weekdays are quite busy for everybody. The boys are in

school from 7:30 am to about 3 pm, then they go for their after-school activities, which could be either tennis, Taekwondo, golf, basketball, or swimming. Reggie and I, being a lawyer and a private banker respectively, have rigorous work schedules but try to have dinner with the boys and tuck them in, if there are no dinner or transaction deadlines.

How do you guys unwind? Reggie: The family enjoys eating out. Rockwell is a favorite

destination because of its convenience and proximity to our home. We also take short trips out of town, like a weekend in the Barrientos farm in Batangas, or to Tagaytay. The fresh air, outdoors, and nature are good alternatives to the computer, television, and the malls. How would you describe Felix as a father? Reggie as a wife? F: Reggie is absolutely understanding of my career. Client’s

demand for a private banker’s time is 24/7. What makes it www.bcmag.ph

worse is that I am based in Singapore. Reggie and my boys have never complained. Instead, they give me constant support and understanding, and allow me to pursue something I am very passionate about. Reggie’s simply amazing, and that makes me extremely lucky to have found her. R: Felix is a hands-on father. He completely adores the boys and takes a simple task of taking a shower or changing clothes to a fun, exciting, crazy moment. I can’t help but have my camera and video on-hand at all times, as I do not want to miss capturing a riot moment. He is Diego’s and Andro’s best friend…and of course, mine too! Felix, how is it like transitioning from a top tennis player/athlete, and then going corporate? F: I prepared myself properly and planned my transition from an

athlete to a private banker way in advance. My focus in a game and experience in tournaments and competitions have instilled responsible self-confidence that I have turned early missteps to opportunities—never to a discouraging moment. I was not afraid to start from ground zero, in fact below zero, as athletes DEC-JAN 2011 philippines

have been boxed into the image of “dumb jocks.” Believe me, it was not, and is not easy. Psychologically, the shift from sports to private banking was a complete paradigm shift, but I knew that if I persevered and worked hard enough, it would only be a matter of time ‘til I catch up with the competition, and compete on the global stage once again, albeit in a different field. This I enjoy doing because I’ve been trained my whole life to work hard, excel, and succeed. I brought over that same attitude and applied it to my next career.

skills? R: We expose them to as many sports as we can. Diego and

Well said. Reggie, how does your lawyer training come in handy when it comes to child-rearing? R: Years of managing PJS Law, with 35 lawyers and 30 support

Describe your personal style. F: Classic look for business suits, and relaxed, sporty wear for the

staff, has made managing my two boys surprisingly easy—for now—ask me again when they hit puberty! I have better chances at winning an argument at the office, however, than at home. I melt when the hugs and kisses are unleashed, and my defenses are completely ruined when the expressions of love and devotion are launched. But for a serious answer, one of my basic rules in managing PJS Law is requiring mutual respect. I’ve done a lot of listening and learning, which has permitted me to plan and provide better solutions. So, I do a lot of listening with Diego and Andro now. And despite the image that my kids rule, they’re actually obedient and helpful boys. Even if I don’t win each battle, I make sure I win all wars. My boys know when I mean business with just a look or a shift in the tone of my voice, and they immediately tow the line.

What talents have your kids inherited from you both? F: Diego and Andro seem to excel in any sport they take—they

get this from Reggie, who is a natural, gifted athlete. Andro is a fierce competitor and absolutely hates to lose—he gets his focus and winning drive from me.

What are your kids’ interests, and how do you help hone their

Andro like golf, swimming, tennis, soccer and basketball. But if they are made to choose, they will say their favorite is tennis. We believe that sustaining their interest is crucial in any discipline, so we make sure they have fun—the right strokes will just follow— by joining and practicing with them. We also invite their friends to join as Felix’s best friends have been borne from the long court drills and games.

weekends.

R: Classic but comfortable business dressing for the week. For the

weekend, a completely dress-down attire, which normally gets me to be in shorts. I usually end up running after, or running with, Diego and Andro.

How do you dress your kids? R: Diego and Andro are Felix’s juniors. We like to dress them up

in classic, American preppy outfits, button-down shirts, classic chinos, oxfords, and driving shoes.

What makes your home really special? R: It’s a place where we could do anything. Kids ride their bikes

outside and inside the house. They stand on the sofas—thankfully, with clean feet because they’re quite neat to start with. We eat not only in the dining room, lanai or kitchen, but we also eat in the family room—so we can enjoy the shows while eating in front of the 60-inch TV. We dribble the basketball inside the bedrooms, because it makes “habulan” more fun. We are blessed with constant laughter, which makes our home very special.

Who designed and decorates your home? F: The father of Reggie, Architect Filoteo “Teng” Jacinto,

designed the layout of the house. It was our common friend, Gil Coscolluela, who designed the look of the house, both exterior and interior. R: Decorating our home has been a joint, and always fun challenge, for Felix and I. We are lucky that we have common tastes and respect that should we not agree, there will always be options that we both can be happy with. Most important value you would you like to impart to your children as they grow up? R: There are two—God and Family. Both will always be there

for you.

What makes motherhood/fatherhood great? F: It sounds cliché, but having your kids around you is simply the

best feeling. There is no other equivalent feeling.

R: Motherhood is a gift. What makes it great is the miracle of

loving with all your heart for your first born, and replicate the same miracle for the next child. Then to realize that your love for your children have not taken away from existing love, making you capable of loving your husband with the same intensity as your wedding day.

What is your proudest parenting moment? F: With no prior experience, I changed the diaper of Diego, our first

born, on the first night we brought him home from the hospital.

R: Wanting to give up the law practice when our Andro

was diagnosed with autism. I was most proud of Felix who also wanted to give up everything to help out his family.

How do you get the kids to follow you? R: We’ve learned from the boys’ teachers that anticipation

and consistency are crucial to discipline. Expectations at school are the same at home—and Felix and I, with the entire staff, take a common stance. F: We are fortunate we have good boys. For those off days, however, Reggie takes over and gives the look, or uses her loud, piercing voice that can stop strangers and cause them to drop what their doing. Haha! What are the funniest things your kids do? R: The boys try to dress themselves up and that’s when

things go haywire on the fashion side. I wanted to send you the pictures but they will kill me. They also make up their own songs and dances—and the butt dance always brings the house down.

The next ones are questions for the kids. What are the funniest things your parents do or say? Andro: They like to make funny faces (Reggie’s note: he

was actually demonstrating it with matching sounds). Diego: They copy my brother’s funny dance (Reggie’s note: Actually, we edited the reply because he was saying “Bule” dance which is Ilonggo for “butt”). Best gifts you’ve ever received? A: My orange PSP and blue car. D: Trip to Hong Kong Disneyland with my family. What do you love most about your mom and dad? A: Dad plays Wii pirate game with me and Diego. D: They sleep in my room, and I sleep in their room. We

spend a lot of time together. We swim together. We go to Tagaytay, Bacolod, Baguio and Singapore. They allow me to play with their computers on weekends. You boys are too cute! And back to Reggie and Felix. Who is your parenting role model? F: There is actually no one parenting model for us, but we

take the best from our parents, siblings, friends, children’s teachers, therapists, and developmental pediatrician. Must-haves as a parent? R: A small camera with video feature so you can carry

it with you at all times. Thank God for cellphones, too. Always have alcogel, Band-Aid, and tissue in your bag.

New Year’s resolution? F: To exercise more regularly, and finally get that executive

check-up we have been talking about.

Motto as a parent? R: We hope to provide our children with as much happy

moments as we can. Happy memories are priceless, and it is these moments that they can hold on to in times of difficulty. bc

You always see someone’s birth and death with a dash in the middle, and that life is really about how we live and love in between, and what we do with our dash.

f

or the past couple of years, Soleil and my family have shared birthdays and playdates together, and the affection and closeness among them never ceases to amaze me. If you’re about my age (I will stop right there) you either had “Punky Power” yourself, or had one of your funky-colored outfits inspired by her character, or as a boy, were crushing on her (one of our guy editors in the U.S. owns a signed photo of her to this day). This shoot was special because we photographed Soleil for BC U.S. years ago with her eldest girl, Poet Sienna Rose Goldberg, while she was still pregnant with her second daughter, Jagger Joseph Blue, and immediately after she had given birth. Both times were done in their beautiful, Moroccan-inspired home in Los Angeles. With now over 1.4 million Twitter followers, @moonfrye is Hollywood’s reigning Earth mama, as she is about everything organic when it comes to her family and home. Testament to this is the success of her eco-store called The Little Seed, which is a go-to for all things natural and stylish for children.

Soleil has been a household name since she was a child, and she says that the best part about growing up in the limelight was, “Being able to play make-believe, everyday. The only difference between my playground and others was that mine was the lot of NBC. We’d ride our bikes to the Johnny Carson set, and crash it! It was amazing! We’d play hide-and-seek, but would hide in Carson’s office. It was a totally unique childhood, and there’s nothing I would change.” For both of her girls’ births, Soleil’s close friend, Demi Moore, was literally in the room. Her husband, Jason Goldberg, and Ashton Kutcher are business partners in Katalyst, a production company that brought us Punk’d, The Butterfly Effect, etc. “[Demi] is one of the most incredible birthing coaches in the universe. She has a real gift. She is one of the people you want holding your hand when you’re bringing a baby into the world, and I’ve been blessed with an incredible group of family and friends both times.” On the unique monikers of her children, she states that, “I think Poet chose her own name. We were at our friend’s house on a beautiful island when we thought of it, and it was something that kept on following us throughout the pregnancy. On Father’s day, we asked Poet, who was then in my tummy, for what she wanted her name to be—we looked up and saw a sign that said, “Poet” and right beside it was a quote that we loved from Edgar Allan Poe [“All that we see or seem, is but a dream within a dream”]. name that Jason and I both always really loved. She was kicking and bouncing around my belly so much that it felt very fitting for her.” The name “Jagger” for a girl became quite controversial when it first came out, and Soleil explains that, “Jason and I have always believed in unique names for our family, because they hold a story. Jagger was a name that we loved for either a boy or a girl, and Joseph is the name of my godfather, who is like my second father. He was the one who walked me down the aisle, he was my mentor, my best friend, and his spirit was such a part of Jagger’s. He passed away from cancer, but he’s still such a part of our lives, and we felt by giving her “Joseph Blue” as a middle name, it was carrying on his memory and honoring his life while giving her a real piece of our history as a family. I love that when our girls grow up, they’ll have stories to tell about their names. When I was young, my mom would tell people that my name came from my being born in August, the month of the sun and the moon, Photographs by

and no matter how many times I heard it—it never got old.” Soleil also remembers that, “When Poet was born, I never knew that the human spirit could love in such a way as you love your children. I just kept thinking about how this love was so unique and beautiful, and when Jagger was born, my heart melted and tears fell from my eyes once again. To think that our hearts continue to love and grow so much is mind-blowing. I was sitting in the tub with both girls and Poet was washing Jagger with a washcloth, and I was thinking to myself that these are truly the moments to look back on at the end of my life. There are still so many things that I need to learn, but I am trying to just be in the moment. A very close friend of our family’s once said that, “You always see someone’s birth and death with a dash in the middle, and that life is really about how we live and love in between, and what we do with our dash.” bc a n n e ma r i e fox
